I guess I should have gone in it’s hey day, although I have been once before a year or so ago and my impression from that visit was meh too.  Last time it wasn’t particularly exciting but it wasn’t especially disappointing either.  I remember thinking the pizza was nice, but not really worth all the hype and to be frank.. not worth they money it costs.

It was my friend Wally’s birthday (aka Frostfox) and we all went to dinner at Alleycats.  We went to the original store, which when I said I wasn’t so impressed last year everyone said I had to go to.

Well as far as first (or second) impressions go, they failed.  HORRIBLY.  Best pizza in Taipei?  Really I think I would have preferred Napoli, you know the greasy cheap shit that costs a couple of bucks.

I ordered the Napoletana: Fresh Tomato, Goat Cheese, Anchovies, Olives and Spinach.  I swapped out a couple of ingredients.. (anchovies for Italian sausage), and mmm sounds delish right!

Well, the whole experience was a disaster.  I asked them to separate my bill, I even ordered completely separate from the other people at the table.  And at the end they Just threw my stuff in with the bill, not a big deal but an annoying detail.  And before you dance around about how the mean white girl is picking on the Chinese serving staff, I speak Chinese and I told them in Chinese.

The food came at ridiculous intervals, seriously the first person had been finished his meal before the seconds to last person was given his food.  Two of the Calzonis were burned, one was a little messed up the other looked suspiciously puck like.  But they were guys and you know how guys are, they often either don’t care or can’t be bothered to complain to the waitress.  It wasn’t like we had a huge party of people or the orders were particularly complex.  And honestly for 380NT, ($14 Cad), you’d think they could manage to give you a Calzoni that is cooked properly!

When my pizza came the first thing I noticed was the tomato had been cooked.  WTF?  Fresh tomato on a Pizza means, fresh, uncooked tomato is put on the pizza after it comes out of the oven.  And YES I’m sure, I used to work at a pizza place.  I wasn’t upset about it, I just got up and explained the situation to the waitress.  And I got LIP!! Seriously????  She tells me that’s not what fresh tomato means…. Well maybe not in Chinese but as the menu is in English, I’m telling you that FRESH Tomato means uncooked on a pizza.   I mean really.. what the hell else would it mean?  Not old and moldy?  Not frozen?  Are these really things we use on a pizza?

But they did (after a little tiff) throw some fresh tomato on my pizza. Now this Pizza costs like, 500 nt for a 12″ ($17.50 CAD) and it has all kinds of yummy things on it so I’m really looking forward to it.  I take a bite.. yum, then I take another.. and get a massive clump of what appears  to be previously frozen or stewed spinach.   Instead of using nice spinach I’m convinced they scrapped the bottom of a barrel for the old, had gone bad shit to put on my pizza.  And then they didn’t have the decency to spread a nice thin layer out.. instead just a couple of big ass clumps on each slice.

Needless to say I was NOT impressed.  I had the rest of the pizza the next day, second day pizza yum! And the spinach had gotten even grosser… Really?  the only reason I ate it was because I wasn’t willing to throw away such expensive food.  I bought it and I was eating it…

But I did not enjoy it AT ALL.  There is no way in hell I’m going back.  Between the crap service, poor quality of ingredients and the burning of others food I can safely say it is not only NOT the best pizza in town.  I think it give Worst Pizza in town a run for it’s money, especially if you factor in how much it costs.

I’m sure many people have been there many times and had lovely experiences, perhaps it was just a bad day for them.  But I’ve spoken to a few people since last Saturday and they have all said the same thing, Alleycats has really gone down hill recently.

I do not recommend you wasting your money, but if you want to go anyway here are the addresses and numbers.

This alleycat is one of the most professionally organised I’ve ever seen. With helicopter-shot footage, pro-style podium and legion of staff, it beats the charming-but-shambolic affairs I’ve taken part in, at least on paper/YouTube.

It ran through the streets of Auckland in New Zealand, with five checkpoints, or six if you ran a brake. That’s right, being safety-conscious did effectively rule you out of the winning spot. Odd decision, that.

Red Bull Eye in the Sky was a fixed gear, track bike race around Auckland City, New Zealand.
 There were 5 checkpoints around the city and riders had to collect a token at each checkpoint.
 If a rider was running with a brake they had to visit a 6th checkpoint.

The thing is, Auckland isn’t a very good place for a race like this. Being built essentially at random over two thousand years is an advantage, if you’re a city looking to host a good alleycat. All the accouterments of high-level sponsorship can’t make up for the fun of London’s claustrophobic and chaotic street planning.

Someone called Rainier Schaefer took 1st place with a time of 19.22min, in case you’re interested.

Otra vez será en barcelona el paradise weekend del 2009. Del 28-30 Agosto. Será la  4 edición de esta reunión de biciclistas urbanosy como siempre … habrá muy buen rollo además de carreras, sprints, bikepolo y fiesta.

Participé en la del año pasado y mi camino de santiago de este año me impide estar allí.

Si tienes pensado asistir, seguro que agradecen los de la organización, tener una aproximación de cuanta gente asistirá. Tienen un formulario de registro para participar en el paradise weekend 2009.

Last night was epically awesome. After we left the alleycat bike race afterparty we went to the rooftop and drank breakfast PBRs and kept watch over Bushwick. Around 11am I fell asleep in the sun. I am exhausted today but it was worth it.

Hands down, one of the best sloppy half-memories in New York.

Tendrá lugar en un circuito cerrado en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid que todavía no está planificado, pero tendrá subidas, bajadas, tuneles y muchas cosas mas de esas que nos gustan.

First Alleycat in Quito, Equator…

Este viernes 27 de marzo a las 18h00 pon a prueba tu bici, tu velocidad y tu conocimiento.

Alleycat es una competencia informal urbana de bicicletas y comúnmente son organizadas por mensajeros en bicicleta. La primera competencia de Alleycat se la realizó en Toronto en octubre 30 de 1989 y desde ese entonces, esta modalidad ha venido ganando popularidad y adeptos alrededor de las principales ciudades del mundo, e incluso en ciudades donde no existe una población de mensajeros en bicicleta son organizados por ciclistas urbanos.

Los alleycats a más de promover la sana competencia buscan crear comunidad entre las personas que montan bicicleta y ofrece una oportunidad de diversión y esparcimiento.  Es por estas razones que Andando en BIci Carajo y la Productora de Eventos AFUERA, organizan el primer Alleycat Kapitalino “Jesús del Gran Pedal”.

La carrera tendrá una modalidad por equipos formados por tres personas, los mismos que deberán acudir a cuatro puntos (checkpoints) ubicados a lo largo de la ciudad , los mismos que serán develados momentos antes a la partida, la ruta que el equipo tome para llegar al siguiente punto es de libre elección. Los equipos deberán acudir a cada punto en un orden específico donde deberán ejecutar una prueba que será dada a conocer al momento de la llegada a dicho punto.

La salida de la carrera es de el taller de Construbicis (J. L. Mera N 22 44 y Veintimilla). El costo por persona es 5 usd.

 Bases Alley Cat Kapitalino Jesús del Gran Pedal. Primera Válida

Alley Cat Kapitalino primera edición es una modalidad de competencia por equipos formado por tres personas. Todos los equipos parten de un mismo lugar; deberán acudir a los 4 puntos de revisión de la carrera en el orden que se indica en el pasaporte de pruebas, el mismo q se entregará el día de la competencia; y regresar al punto de salida habiendo cumplido en orden las 4 pruebas en los respectivos puntos de revisión.

Si no te inscribes en equipo de tres personas puedes hacerlo individualmente o en pareja para nosotros completar tu equipo el día de la competencia (sin garantías),

Requisitos obligatorios para la carrera:

• Ser mayor de edad,
• asistir con bicicleta,
• una cámara fotográfica digital o teléfono celular con cámara con una resolución mínima de 1.3 megapíxeles,
• una lata de spray de pintura por equipo,
• un dólar americano por persona para la competencia,
• parches y una bomba para inflar llantas,
• usar prendas con materiales reflectivos y/o luces posteriores.
• cadena o seguro para bicicletas,               

La Alleycat (”gato callejero”) es una carrera de ciclismo urbano en la que los participantes deben pasar por un número de puestos de control. Su origen está en los grupos de bici-mensajeros de los EEUU. Aqui un video para q vayas cachando lo q se viene
