What are the most important thing to do in optimizing our website/blog for search engines? Relevancy! That’s the main key! The title of our website/blog must be relevant to the content. And the URL (the address of the website/blog) would be very helpful, too, in putting our website on the front page of the search results. Without this, very unlikely our blog would get good rank in search engine results page.

So, before anything, it is best to research first the main topic of our “going-to-be” website/blog before acquiring the URL. Find the right keywords first. If possible, find the keywords that are not very competitive unless you know what you are doing. It’s futile to try to compete with giants out there on the net with their specialized SEO expert team if we are still very new in all this stuff!

To find the right keyword as well as brainstorming the new ones, we can use a free tool provided by Google: Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Google provides this tool for their advertisers, but we can use it, too, for our own keywords analysis. For instance, if we’d like to build a blog about fashion, enter the keyword fashion into that tool and we’ll see the number searches that Google had performed during last month for keyword “fashion” and other keyword related to fashion. That reflects the demands of those keywords (keyword demand).

Keywords with very big demand usually are the very competitive ones, means we will find so many sites that would supply the information about them. For example, the keyword fashion above were searched 24,900,000 times locally and 45,500,000 globally. That’s a huge number! But, soon we’ll find out that there are too many resources in the internet which provide information about fashion (keyword supply) : there are already 400 million search results for normal Google search, and 306 million if we use the command “allinanchor” (type “allinanchor:fashion” without the quotes) in our Google search! So, the keyword “fashion” is a no-no for us, the new-kid-on-the-block We’d better find other keywords which are not that competitive. We’d better look other keywords that are less competitive or just change the topic instead!

Maybe some of you wonder what is the command “allinanchor” for? It is a Google search command that searches for pages in the internet that contain inbound links with a certain keyword in their anchor text. And an anchor text is the text appears in a clickable link. For example, if you see a link on a web page that looks like this: web search engine optimization, then the anchor text is “web search engine optimization”.

Anchor text also plays an important role in optimizing our website/blog for search engines. A good web search engine optimization must consider and plan carefully on what to write as the anchor texts in a inbound and/or outbound links. The anchor texts must be related to keywords chosen for optimum results. But I will not elaborate it here. We will discuss it later after we cover the basic principles of web search engine optimization.
