The essence of Mahalo Creative Lounge and Café exists in the most basic necessity of life, which is consistent with every single human being on this planet and that is the desire to be loved and accepted. These emotional needs are first and foremost in every person’s life, from the moment of birth, whether they recognize it or not. Perhaps we are conditioned to strive to be successful, or rich, or competitive, or popular or whatever, but the reality of the drive for these things still boils down to that original, basic need. Every interaction with another human being is an exchange of energy to fulfill that which we seek. Mahalo is an opportunity to create an atmosphere that is unique, filled with creative, open-minded people that have a place where all people are welcome and accepted; all people are loved and treated like family. THIS is the very ESSENCE of Mahalo Creative Lounge and Cafe. This is what distinguishes us from the rest of the world. The driving forces behind Mahalo are feelings of love, acceptance, and cooperation, creating opportunity, freedom, hope and unity. I can almost guarantee that most business minded people fail to see these things when they are piecing together their business plans. We are an incredible group of entrepreneurs with a GRAND idea that stems from a place of gratitude and love of life itself. Rochester, New York needs a place like this. Every city in the world needs a place like this! We hope to touch the souls of each and every person with our mission.

The meaning of Mahalo is to be grateful

We at Mahalo Creative Lounge and café would like to express our Gratitude for all who take the time to read this blog.

Mahalo and feel free to leave comments

Deixeu-vos mimar!. Bona estada a Tona!.

Aloha,

Aloha,

Fish ID……….from my friend via email………”Just wanted to tell you that the fish on your blog is called a “papio.” My fish expert friend Bernal who grew up on Kauai tells me that you salt and pepper it and fry it. Very tasty. It is a baby actually. I think when the papio grows big, it is called an “ulua.” Jerry says he thinks it is a jackfish in English. Years ago, Bernal and Jerry went out at night to fish. Jerry caught a fish and Bernal filleted it right on the beach for the freshest sashimi ever.” mahalo to Connie

Mahalo…………………Thank-you

Anuenue………………Rainbow

More Hawaiian lessons from my island friend…… “Makai” means on the ocean side and “mauka” is toward the mountain side. When people give directions, they use those terms to indicate if something like a store is on the ocean or mountain side of the highway. Oh, another important one is ”kapu” which means to keep out or forbidden. You might see signs on Kauai that say “kapu” so don’t enter that property.

Growing up, they always tell you that college will be the best years of your life. You live your whole life awaiting the freedom and splendor of the day that you can pack your bags and leave home. You suddenly find life to be audacious, thrilling and somewhat foolish. Life is an adventure and you discover yourself through the process.

After four years (sometimes five, depending on how much studying you actually did), college ends and life gets slightly more convoluted. What do you do now? Where do you go from here? The simple answers are the ones that make you the most agitated. “You find a job and grow up,” they say. Don’t we wish it were really that simple? Life after college is unyielding. Everything that you had planned out for yourself so intricately is not what is actually culminated. You then question everything you had ever thought, every goal and dream you ever had and then wonder, why is life so unsettling after college? Now that the fun is over, instead of being excited to age, you are wishing you could rewind time.

The time after you graduate to getting settled into your first “grown-up” job really tries you. It is the ultimate test of will power and strength because you are just beginning your life and yet there is a severe level of uncertainty of where you are going, which is utterly frightening.

Life after college is perplexing. There is no rolling out of bed and stumbling to class, tailgating and staying up until all hours of the morning six out of the seven days in a week. We hope you enjoyed it while it lasted because although four years seems like it will last forever on the day you move into your first dorm room, it surely does not. But even though you are no longer wreaking havoc all over the college town where you used to reside, what all women need to understand is that the fun is not over. You are still blossoming and have time to be youthful – you may just need to dig a little deeper to find ways to play.

If anyone knows what it feels like to be a young, 23-year-old woman, fresh out of college and working her first job, it’s us. Do we feel older than we should? Yes. Was graduating college and entering the real world depressing? Absolutely. But there is life after the football games, flip cup tournaments and walks of shame. This blog will not only prove this to be true, but it will uplift and aid you in getting through the day and this new life.

* * *

So as we sit and plan our new super fabulous and uplifting blog, we are faced with one dilemma: What exactly do we want to be the voice of this blog? Which persona do we choose? Do we want to write about things fun and flirty and hip and confident? Or do we want to delve deeper, and explore the soft and sentimental? Or perhaps we could illustrate our awkwardness and insecurities?

The truth is, we don’t believe this blog should concentrate on any one persona. We all have multiple layers to our personalities. On Friday nights we feel wild and flirty; on Monday mornings we become professional and driven. Wednesday evenings are for America’s Next Top Model and Ben & Jerry’s on the couch (maybe). How can we pinpoint one voice to encompass our blog when we have so many? We are not one-dimensional, and we refuse to allow our blog to conform to a certain identity. We have read how-tos that insist blogs need one certain concentration or topic to gain credibility. Do we, as growing human beings, need to find one certain concentration of our personalities to gain credibility? We certainly hope not, or we will be missing out on a lot of who we are.

This blog is for women, by women, and about women (mostly). So allow us to present to you our common thread: the complexity of a woman’s mind, heart and soul. Our blog post topics and personas will change as often as a woman’s spirit. We are lots of things. Ain’t nobody gonna hold us down.

One thing I’ve loved doing for as long as I can remember is turning people on to music that I

One thing I’ve loved doing for as long as I can remember is turning people on to music that I like and I think maybe they will like as well. I’ve made my parents and my sister cassette tapes and now CDs, for years with music, some that they know and mostly songs or artists they don’t know. Discovering new music is still a big high for me. It’s like Gregg Allman once said about music, that it’s “life’s blood”.

So I thought maybe I’d do some posts each Friday called “Shine A Light”, that would do exactly that, shine a light on stuff you may or may not have heard. They also may shine a light on folks you’ve forgotten. It’s easier than ever to expand your musical library and find folks through on line sources that you probably couldn’t have 30+ years ago. I’d also love to hear what you are listening to.

The first guy is new to me in the last 7 years or so, but Jack Johnson’s music for me has been like a breath of fresh air. He combines that laid back island vibe, picking up in a strange way where Buffett was years ago. The longer and closer I listened I realized how much he had to say, and how he works his life, and his love for the environment into his music.

It seems from what I’ve read that Jack truly tries to live the Aloha life. If you don’t know his music or some of the causes he is involved with should check him out.

Aloha

Google Cale Parks and you’ll wonder if he’s human or cyborg. The confusion will hit you when you read the extensive—and impressive—list of bands he’s been a part of in recent years (drumming for Aloha, White Williams, Owen, and Cex, among others), and you’ll question how he has the time/energy/ability to do it all. But multi-instrumentalist Parks doesn’t want to be just another drummer in the experimental synth-pop crowd. Instead, the Ohio native is working hard from his Greenpoint pad to establish himself in the music melting pot of Brooklyn. His advantage: wit. Parks is a funny guy with bulging eyes, pleasant disposition, and, you know, talent. The past three years have seen the 30 year old go from MySpace stalker to tirelessly touring solo act. One night we sat in the backseat of a Zipcar—innocently (Parks is a real gentleman)—outside The Bell House in Park Slope and discussed where he’s at and where he’s going.

You’ve played in so many bands, primarily as the drummer for Aloha. How did the solo venture come about?

How it happened is I made a MySpace page in 2006 with all my solo songs on it and started adding Aloha’s friends, not looking at who they were. I just started click add add friend add friend backspace add backspace and so I asked record label [Stiff Slack] in Japan to be my friend and they were like, “We love Aloha! Send us your stuff.” And I was like, “I don’t have a solo record. Why don’t you put it out? Ha-Ha.” And they were like, “OK.” And that’s how it happened. That’s how I did Illuminated Manuscript. Then I started writing more songy songs and trying to sing.

What are songy songs?

Songs with singing, songy songs!

Do you consider yourself a good singer?

No. It’s hard, I have a baritone voice, so it’s hard to project and then when you strain too hard…I don’t know, this is technical talk.

What are you saying? It’s too technical, I can’t understand it?!

No, no, no! Sometimes you strain your voice and it’s hard to project and blah blah blah. But I just started singing live, it’ll be a year in November, so it’s still a new thing. Singing in your apartment is different. But I like singing. I like to think I’m getting better.

Are you trying to get better?

My mom and sister teach, so I called my mom after the Grizzly Bear show [at McCarren Park Pool] and I was like, “Oh my God, they sing so good. Can you send me some voice training books?” And I did a couple of tours with Passion Pit and Michael [Angelakos] has the most incredible voice ever. Listening to him sing and do his warm ups backstage, it’s not even singing, it’s just weird sound effects and sounds that babies make. Just crazy.

Do you prefer being part of a band or performing solo?

I’ve always been in other bands playing drums. It’s not like they don’t take you seriously because you’re a drummer, but you want to make yourself known. I had other ideas for songs that weren’t appropriate for bands like Aloha.

Are you looking to form a permanent band with Eric Lyle Lodwick and Drew Montag Robinson or just have them as part of your solo act?

I’m not sure, we’ll see what happens. I don’t want to speak before anything happens, but we’re having a lot of fun playing together. So far, so good. I’m happy with it.

What shows have you done outside of New York?

I did a full US tour with Passion Pit this summer. It was me, them, and Harlem Shakes. I was the first of 3 in an 800-capacity theatre. I played all over solo, but it’s hard to connect with an audience because I’m doing so much stuff on stage. I sing and I play a sampler pad and I play keyboards and I drum and I play cymbals.

Do you work on the side to support your music?

At APC in SoHo, it’s a French clothing store. I’m not touring till after the winter so I’m just working and only doing local shows for a while.

What’s your favorite local venue to play?

I played at Le Poisson Rouge once and it was amazing. I like Santos Party House.

How early did music factor into your life?

I’ve been playing music all my life, since I was 13 playing in bad bands and garage and all that fun stuff. My friend David was like, “I have a guitar,” and I’d be like, “Well let’s see what you learned at your guitar lesson this week, David.” “I learned the intro to ‘Dream On’ by Aerosmith.” “Cool, let’s play that.” “And I learned ‘Basketcase’ by Green Day.” “OK, let’s play it.”

Wow, hard stuff.

Yeah, almost as hard as a Weezer song.

So your albums, Illuminated Manuscript and Sparklace came out in the past three years, are you planning on any new recordings?

I had [To Swift Mars] EP come out in August. I did a remix for [Bear Hands], “What a Drag.” It’s Three 6 Mafia meets Pet Shop Boys with Dylan [Rau]’s voice. Yeah, it’s that good. I have a couple of remixes lined up that I’m working on and I’ve got a bunch of new demos, so we’ll see in what format they’ll come out, if it’s me, my name, or another project, or if I make them into a car commercial.

Cale Parks and his band are slated to perform at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, on November 14th.

About two years ago, while on my way down from NC to FL, my wife and I passed through Savannah, GA, on I-95. We got hungry, so we decided to stop and grab a bite to eat. At exit 94, there was a Shoney’s, and although I wasn’t crazy about eating there , I was absolutely starving, so I took the exit and pulled into the parking lot.

As soon as we entered the restaurant, we were greeted very cheerfully by the hostess, and she sat us very quickly. A smiling busboy came up and chatted awhile while he poured us some water, and then a waitress with a big smile as well followed behind him, took our order and gave us a litte insight into places to see in Savannah. We got up to go the buffet, and while we were getting our food, a server that was re-filling some of the items started to chat with us and asked us where we were from. We went back to our seats, and during our meal, the manager and walked up to us and asked us if the food was alright and if there was anything else he could do for us.

“Where am I?” was what I was thinking. THIS is a SHONEY’S? Holy cow…I hadn’t been treated this good at a 5-star restaurant, and here I was at a family buffet chain on the side of an interstate. After we finished our meal, which was absolutely delicious – fresh, piping hot and tasty, I went to the front to pay my bill. I asked for the manager, and when he came up, I inquired about the training program (it’s the enterprise learning strategist inside of me), and he said he made his staff was well-trained on how to treat customers right. That was their #1 focus…making customers feel like friends from the time they entered the restaurant till they left the parking lot.

Talk about an impact!!! I am still talking about them two years later. They served up some great food, great service, and lot’s of aloha - awesome!

I treat all people with respect and humility.
