Alpe d'Huez ski lifts open 5th December 2009

With loads of snow over the last few days (approx 70 cm of snow on the slopes) the ski lifts up in Alpe d’Huez will be opening this weekend and with Les Deux Alpes already open you can enjoy some pre christmas skiing or boarding. To take the hassle out of your trip we can also arrange to pick you up from grenoble airport or station.

Cycling Alpe d'Huez in November for Plan UK

1st of November – a glorious sunny and cold late autumns day. Planned to get up at 7am to ride up Alpe d’Huez and finally got out the door after much flaffing at 9:15 AM !.

Although cold the climb up is fun and warm and I was soon riding without gloves and buff. The Alpe d’Huez road is so quiet this time of year and its not unusual to have the road to yourself albeit for the odd van going up to prepare the ski resort for the winter months.

Today i took an alternitive route down turning off at bend 5 for Huez and traversing the road to Villard Reculas. From here the road descends down to Allemont where I turned right and headed up another switchback climb to Vaujany where I went for a swim in the indoor pool.

There has been a first fall of snow on both Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Hopefully this is the start of an excellent winter here in the Oisans.

6 Days of Cycling - Grenoble

The end of October sees the start of the 6 day winter cycling circuit where the pro riders have traditional made their money over the winter period. We went to see the saturday night version of the event that starts at 7PM and ran through to 2AM.You can either sit in the stalls round the edge or book one of the tables in the middle of the velodrome and enjoy a slap up meal. As well as cycling there is a host of other stuff going on from – singers, a live band, circus acts and magicians. Sometimes it all seems to be happening at the same time so while you are trying to work out who is winning the maddison there will be a singer blasting out Frank Sinatras “My Way”. We will run a Grenoble Cycling 6 Days Long Weekend in 2010 to include riding Alpe d’Huez and also a huge meal in the centre of the Velodrome - so visit our website for more information.

I’ve just plugged the entire route for the 2010 ride (or as near to it as I can manage for now) into the excellent Bike Route Toaster. You can find it here.

It’s about 680km in all and we’ll be covering it in 5 days…so an average of about 135km each day. Given the hills (‘hills’ – ha! Alpe d’Huez, Mont Ventoux…) this will mean it’s quite a bit more difficult than the ride this year, but the boys seem to be up for the challenge (in the main!)

In Search of Robert Millar

I have just finished reading this book. It is a great insight into the legend that is Robert Millar – and one of the reasons in 1984 that I got into cycling and especially my love of the mountains. Millar had all his Tour de France wins in the Pyrenees but the author still talks of the great battles he had in the Alpes and especially Alpe d’Huez and the Col du Galibier.

The book can be found in all good bookstores but better still why not visit us here on one of our Cycling Holiday and read it for free.

Grenoble VTT Race

I attended my first VTT (MTB) race last weekend in Grenoble. It was a pretty low key affair and tailored for families. My seven year old son entered his first downhill, xc and trials race and finished a respectble 5th out of about 30 kids in his age group.

I along with a friend enterd the 2 hour relay XC race. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the short course about 10 mins per lap the 3 short sharp climbs (nothing like we are used to in Alpe d’Huez) and the 20 or so cyclo cross bikes !

The event took place next to the cycling clubs velodrome so each lap involved a quick sprint on the velodrome before handing over to your coleague to do a lap. It was hard going with short recovery times with lung busting short climbs. The great thing though about french events is there is always loads of food to eat.

For the record I believe we were 27th out of quite a few more ?!

2010 Dauphiné Libéré to visits Alpe d'Huez

The 2010 Dauphiné Libéré (running from the WC 5th June 2010) and the warm up for the Tour de France will be visiting Alpe d’Huez on the 12th June 2010. It will also be visiting the nearby city of Grenoble on the 11th June. We are currently running our Marmotte Training week this week and for an additional £55GBP you can stay for an extra night to catch Lance Armstrong and the other major tour contenders riding the event as part of their preperation for the Tour de France 2010.

October is a great month here in the Oisans with temperatures during the day reaching mid 20 centigrade – you just have to remember to pack an extra layer for the descents but otherwise its fantastic especially with the changing season. I always start October with a birthday ride up Alpe d’Huez to see what sort of form I am in after the summer season of riding. This time was also a special occasion as I tried out my new Felt SL carbon road bike. This is the first time i have ridden a carbon road bike and it definately felt a lot more responsive.

For the record my time was 62 minutes – despite stopping for the loo! (another year older perhaps this is a sign of things to come !) and adjustment of the position of the saddle.

With 5 of our guests tacking Alpe d’Huez today myself and one other guest, up to Eric the Red Col du Glandon and Col de la Croix Fer der. As you can see from the photos it was pretty wet and cold up there but through the cloud you could just make out the glimpses of the mountain side quietly turning a brown color as autumn approaches.

Marco Pantani Herdenkings fietsdag 2009

Twee van zeven gasten deden vandaag mee met de Marco Pantani Fietsdag. Omdat wij gestationeerd zijn in Bourg d’Oisans namen we hen mee omhoog naar Les Deux Alpes voor de start ’s morgens om 8 uur. John en Simon hadden al een lange hete dag op het zadel achter de rug, met temperaturen oplopend tot 39 C. De route was een klein beetje veranderd dit jaar, omdat de beklimming via Villard Reculas er niet bij zat, maar in plaats daarvan moest men bocht 16 van Alpe d’Huez opfietsen, voordat je door Freney d’Oisans kon steken en dan uiteindelijk de laatste beklimming van Les Deux Alpes kon doen.

De rest van ons fietsen omhoog tot St Christophe en Oisans en La Barade en weer terug!

Alpe d’Huez tijdrit vanaf Bourg d’Oisans

Iedere donderdag in Juli en Augustus is er een grote start van een tijdrit de Alpe d’Huez op, met als startpunt onze basisplaats in Bourg d’Oisans. Om precies te zijn is dit de eerste keer dat ik heb meegedaan aan de race, en ik heb een nieuw persoonlijk record kunnen neerzetten,55:49, bijna een minuut sneller dan mijn vorige persoonlijke record. Het grootste gedeelte van de beklimming reed ik met een paar andere jongens totdat ik ze allebei uit het oog verloor, op nog 3 bochten te gaan. Voor alle duidelijkheid, de winnende tijd was een ongelooflijke 40:16!

50ste verjaardagsrit de Alpe d’Huez op

Een van onze gasten deze week, Peter, een bosbrandweerman uit Australie, reed vandaag de Alpe d’Huez op, als verjaardagskadootje.Hij vertrok vroeg vandaag, om de temperatuur van dik 30 graden het hoofd te bieden en zette een zeer goede Alpe d’Huez tijd van 75 minuten en 35 seconden neer op een van onze huurfietsen.

September is a busy month for us here in Bourg d’Oisans and I get to ride the 21 bends on numerouse occassions. The mountain is still full of cyclist going up but at this time of year they tend to be wearing a few more clothes as the descent can get a little chilly. My favourite ride this month was with 7 guys from Ireland all on our hire bikes here at Enjoy Oisans. These guys times ranged from 66 minutes to 1hr 58 mins – so its quite interesting chatting and watching the riders as they go up.

For october I will be riding up on my birthday hopefully on my new “company” Felt road bike – It will be my first carbon road bike so i am wondering if it will feel any different.

Tot volgend jaar, wanneer we de Mont Ventoux opgaan, zul je me via dit medium na deze post niet meer horen over de Alpe D’Huez. Dit betekent overigens niet dat ik me het recht voor houd om in de kroeg tot in den treure te blijven blaten en opscheppen over onze zegetocht. (Die waarschijnlijk in heldendichten zal worden bezongen zoals de verovering van Troje.) Echter, dit laatste filmpje kan ik jullie niet onthouden… Bedankt Maurice, ook namens Daco, de Dude in appeltjestrui en die Gast die op zijn middelste voorblad wel even de Alpe d’Huez zou opklimmen.

Cyclist Steve Lundblad at Logan Pass, Glacier National Park

Sometimes in life things happen for a purpose. Such was the case for cross-country and track runner, Steve Lundblad.

Lundblad grew up in Central Washington State, in a town called Yakima, and excelled in both sports and academics.

“I participated in many outdoor activities growing up,” Lundblad said. In junior high and high school Lundblad ran on the cross-country team and participated in various events while on the track and field team, eventually concentrating on the high jump.

“I continued jumping in college until I started to spend more time in the training room than on the track. That’s when I began competing at the collegiate level in bicycle racing, which was a club sport,” he said.

Lundblad’s personal best in the high jump was 6 feet 6 inches when he competed at Harvard University. It was at Harvard that Lundblad stumbled on bicycle racing and was coached by three time Olympian and national road champion, John Allis.

After living in various locations to attend graduate schools, Lundblad and his wife Nancy, returned to Yakima for an additional 10 years.

A friend from college, Karen Nakamoto, would always encourage the Lundblad’s to move to Hilo. “It took several years of convincing before we made the decision to live in Hilo,” Lundblad said.

Lundblad’s wife took a job as the medical director of the Hilo Medical Center (she no longer works there) and he joined the faculty in the Geology Department at the University of Hawaii at Hilo where he serves as an assistant professor.

“It is great teaching geology in an area with active volcanoes. I also work with Peter Mills, a UHH archaeologist, tracing the origin and exchange of stone tools by pre-contact native Hawaiians. We analyze them for geochemical signatures, which relate to the locales of the origination of the rocks,” Lundblad said.

Lundblad’s running days ended during the early 1990’s when he suffered a badly broken foot. “I spend most of my time these days cycling, in part to my brittle joints as well as to enjoy the beautiful surroundings here on the Big Island,” he said.

In 1991 Lundblad competed in the Texas state championship road race with a young kid by the name of Lance Armstrong. “Lance was still a relative unknown but becoming the “kid” to watch. Later that year he (Armstrong) became the national bicycling road race champion, while I went back to graduate school,” Lundblad said.

The Lundblad’s also rode up the famous Alpe d’Huez climb during the 2003 Tour de France. “It was quite an experience to ride up the hill with hundreds of thousands of people lining the roads. They were there waiting to watch the world’s best cyclists climb the same road at unbelievable speeds just a few hours later,” he said.

Lundblad was also a regular cross country skier when he lived during the winter months in Washington State. “Cross country skiing is an activity that is mostly limited to my vacations now,” he said.

But this past February Lundblad did compete in the American Birkebeiner cross country ski race held in Wisconsin with world renowned skier Bjorn Daehlie of Norway. “Training for the cold and snowy race was a bit of a challenge here in Hilo,” Lundblad said.

The Birkebeiner race was a challenging 54 km (33 miles) event and Lundblad was only able to get in a few days worth of snow skiing prior to the race. “I spent several days in Hilo on my roller skis getting interesting looks from people,” he said.

Daehlie participated in the event as a way to raise money and awareness for MS, which his mother has, and he finished second overall. Lundblad finished somewhere in the middle of the pack of over 7,000 skiers.

At age 46 Lundblad is lean and a picture of good health. Due to his regular exercise routine Lundblad doesn’t have to worry about weight which leaves room for him to eat a variety of foods.

“I am lucky to not worry too much about how much I eat, as my weight doesn’t really fluctuate very much. I try to enjoy a balanced diet, but generally need to eat a lot of food, so there is room for plenty of everything. It’s terrific to live here in Hawaii with fresh fruits and vegetables all year at the farmer’s market and the garden,” Lundblad said.

Rarely does a day go by that Lundblad isn’t on his bike. He has found a group of friends to ride with a few days a week, spending about two hours per ride. “During the summer some of us rode a bit more to get ready for competitive events like the Sea to Stars race which leaves Bayfront in Hilo and climbs to the visitor center at 9000 feet on Mauna Kea,” he said.

Over the Labor Day weekend Lundblad was in Honolulu to compete in the rigorous Dick Evans Memorial Road Race which took cyclist 112 miles around Oahu. Lundblad finished 14^th out of 181 starters in a time of 5 hours and 14 minutes.

Lundblad was very fortunate to find something he truly loves to do after breaking his foot more than 15 years ago. He was also very fortunate to have found good mentors during his early cycling days that taught him how to ride safely and efficiently.

“For folks who are interested in cycling for fitness, my advice is to find people who ride regularly and go with them. It will be more fun, you will learn a lot, and there is more incentive to participate regularly if you know someone else will be there with you. We are always looking for new people to join our group and we’ll get you started on the right pedal!” Lundblad said.
