En bon agent rationnel poursuivant son intérêt strictement personnel au détriment de la communauté, du partage, du don de soi, en un mot : de la philia, je m’économise les yeux et ne peut que solliciter davantage mes oreilles (et les vôtres).

Alpha Blondy… On connaît bien sûr toute l’ambiguité du personnage, les contradictions entre le message et son soutien inconditionnel à certain gouvernement de Côte d’Ivoire, le démesure de l’ego et la fortune amassée, le comportement de roitelet dans des quartiers quasi féodaux.

Ah, la mégalo associée à des projets politiques douteux… Cela ne vous rappelle rien ?

Ne boudons toutefois pas notre plaisir d’un bon petit reggae “français”, ils ne sont pas légion non plus.

Mettons plutôt à profit les conseils (très actuels) et le message de paix, ça court pas non plus les rues de nos jours.

The beaches, the food, friends and family as well as the relaxed atmosphere of Trinidad and Tobago is what an adventurous Trinidadian girl misses most when she is abroad. Melissa Tang Nian from the Port of Spain area went to Germany in April in order to study German and aesthetics there.

After only a few months she is almost fluent in German now. Melissa did aesthetics in Trinidad and wants to improve her skills in Europe. Her aim is to get her cidesco diploma. That course will take two years. One reason why she decided for Germany is the good education system and the job opportunities there. “Trinidad lacks the updated systems that the aestheticians need to move forward”, she says.

In August last year, Melissa met her German boyfriend, Philipp, in Tobago on a glass-bottom boat at Buccoo Reef. The 22-year-old girl and the one year older young man fell in love immediately. Philipp went to Trinidad twice to visit her and her family. Now they share his tiny one-room apartment in a German town called Erlangen. 104 000 inhabitants live there. “It is a very cold place to live”, Melissa says. “The people are not always friendly. They always seem bothered by something. This place not vibes in meh.” From her experience with the Germans she can tell that they are very suspicious of foreigners. “But when they get to know you then they are open with you”. The Trini girl sees the problem in the cultural difference: “What would be a normal thing to say in Trinidad and Tobago may cause offence in Germany.” Caribbean people in her opinion are accustomed to lively, energetic and friendly people and they have a more relaxed and open culture where nothing really is taboo. Anyway, Melissa has also met some friendly German girls, she made friends with quickly. They sometimes lime at one of their homes or in a pub.

With one of the girls Melissa went to one of Europe’s biggest reggae festivals in the South of Germany, the Chiemsee Reggae Summer. She loved it because it had people from all age groups and all different countries. Trinbagonians with their national flags were also there. Food, clothes and craft from all over the world was available. A lot of campers put up their tents for the three days festival. The night before, it rained so that the whole area was nothing but muddy. But the 22 000 visitors at the 13^th Chiemsee Reggae Summer did not mind. Like Melissa, most of them wore rubber boots or danced just barefoot. Some of them looked like as if they had come directly from the Trinidadian J’ouvert morning, completely covered in mud. The Trini girl enjoyed herself very much whilst wining to Capleton’s aggressive dancehall beats, Jimmy Cliff’s, Max Romeo’s and Jah Mason’s conscious reggae, Alpha Blondy’s famous hits, Yellowman, Macka B & Royal Roots Band as well as to German reggae music like from Gentleman, Blumentopf, 40 Fiyah, House of Riddim, Mellow Mark & Natty Flo and many more international and German artistes.

“The annual Chiemsee festival reflects the German culture”, the young Trini says. “It is more organized with better security than in Trinidad. They have almost everything you can think about: toilet facilities, washing machine rooms, mobile grocery stores, breakfast tents, drinking water taps, parker areas, camping areas and the list goes on”. Planning and organising are the Germans’ biggest strengths. After the festival, Melissa was happy. She felt very much like at home. “The people at the reggae event were carefree and open, the music was wonderful and the food great. The energy in Germany and the energy in Trinidad and Tobago is the same just on a different level, ” she says. Melissa was quite surprised how many German Rastafarians walked around in the 426 000 square meters wide festival area. After the event, she tried to find her way back to the car several times. Finally, she found it plus a good comparison for that situation: “When I was ready to go home from the Chiemsee Reggae Summer, I swore, the whole area was the size of the entire of Trinidad and more”.

Melissa is now looking forward to more festivals like the “Volksfest” at her boyfriend’s hometown, Erding, where almost everyone is going to wear the traditional Bavarian outfits: leather pants for the guys and dirndls for the girls. Beer will be served in 1-litre-glasses and people usually dance on tables and benches – no matter if they are still teenagers or in their sixties. Until the one-week-lasting Volksfest, Melissa and Philipp will keep on studying, going jogging and cycling to a nearby lake from time to time. That is also something the Trini has to get used to. She says: “In Trinidad or Tobago when you go to a place with water, you go into the water. But in Germany, people stay on the grass or the beach because the water is too cold to go in”. It is also a fact that Germans love sunbathing for a nice tan. This is not necessary anymore for the Trinidadian beauty.

“If you make everything around you pleasant, know the right places to go and the right people to meet, Germany is also a nice place,” Melissa finishes. She wants to live there but not without coming back to Trinidad and Tobago regularly because nothing can substitute the multicultural country, home of the steel drum and calypso, provider of the most lovely beaches and tasty food and land of life-loving people.

Me he encontrado con varios ingenieros de sonido con una gran experiencia como ingenieros de sala de artistas reconocidos a nivel nacional e internacional, todos ellos concuerdan en que mezclar Reggae en vivo es una de las mejores escuelas para un ingeniero de sonido, ya que este es en genero que maneja dinámicas  complejas basadas en su sección rítmica y el bajo, ademas se manejan formatos grandes, con secciones de vientos, percusiones, coros, teclados, lo que hace a una mezcla mas extensa y en la que hay que darle espacio a cada instrumento en términos de ecualización y espacialidad. En mi experiencia particular como Ingeniero de Sala con bandas de reggae colombianas como Profetas, Makeda, Alto Grado Colombia, The Klaxon, entre otras, debo decir que ha sido la mejor escuela para mi en el sonido en vivo, cada día se aprenden cosas nuevas, y se mejoran otras, en un proceso que lleva pocos años pero que cada día se va alimentando de experiencias y enseñanzas buscando llegar a niveles muy profesionales.

Än en gång lyckades festivalledningen ringa in gräddan av de främsta artisterna inom roots och dancehall. Reggaeälskare har under veckan kunna njuta av högdjur som Ky-Mani Marley, Alpha Blondy och Busy Signal.

Temperaturen var hög – på scenen, i publiken och i luften. Flera av de artister som uppträdde under lördagen, festivalens sista dag, hade flyt med både väder och publik. Nåja, nästan alla i alla fall.

På den stora scenen inleddes eftermiddagen med Governor Andy som med sin käcka folkparksreggae fick scenen och publiken att gunga. Hyfsat mycket folk hade tiden till trots flockats framför scenen för att se en av Sveriges främsta reggaeartister.

Det var många som försvann efter att Guvernören lämnat scenen, och tyvärr visade det sig att de flesta inte brydde sig om att komma tillbaka till området förrän flera timmar senare. När veteranerna Inna de Yard Allstars klev upp på scenen var det pinsamt tomt framför de numera grånande gubbarna Cedric Myton, Linval Thompson, Earl “Chinna” Smith och Kiddus I samt deras två yngre kollegor.

Gubbarna i Inna de Yard Allstars har tillsammans en diger meritlista som spänner över fyra decennier och de är sannolikt vana vid en större och betydligt mer aktiv publik – något som blir uppenbart när bandledaren Earl “Chinna” Smith  i konsertens inledning förtvivlat försöker få igång allsång under klassiska Soul Syndicate-låten Mariwana. “You can be arrested for smoking it, but not for singing about it!“. Det hela slutar med vad som ser ut som en rejält förbannad bandledare som lämnar scenen, för att efter en sekund eller två vända tillbaka och dra igång vad som blir en makalös spelning med både klassiska och mer okända låtval.

Etana är kvällens “Concious Lady”. Hon debuterade 2006 och har sedan dess släppt ett bra debutalbum och en rad starka singlar. Hennes röst kan utan problem konkurrera med souldivor som Beyoncé och Alicia Keys. Det kan däremot inte hennes utstrålning. Etana är en vacker men grå mus när hon kommer ut på scenen, och lyckas inte förmedla styrkan i väl valda låtar som Jah Chariot och I’m Not Afraid. Det hela blir dessutom pajigt i duetten Blessings. Originalet är tillsammans med Alborosie, men här framför hon den med den manliga delen av körduon. Och resultatet är allt annat än imponerande.

Musikerna som backar Etana stannar ett par timmar på scenen. De är nämligen band till efterföljande Lutan Fyah och Busy Signal.

Dessa två deejays river ner stora applåder när de kliver på scenen efter Etana.

Lutan Fyah är på Uppsala Reggae Festival för tredje gången. Och det är lätt att förstå varför festivalledningen vill ha honom tillbaka. Han river rappt och energiskt av hit efter hit, men avslutar tyvärr med att köra två korta versioner av favoriterna Save the Juvenile och Rasta Still de Bout.

Lutan Fyah påminner om en duracellkanin när han springer fram och tillbaka över scenen, men är ändå i en betydligt lägre energidivison än Busy Signal som greppar micken efteråt.

Busy Signal kan närmast liknas vid en duracellkanin på speed. Han hoppar jämfota, knäböjer, springer fram och tillbaka i en fart som för tankarna till Jamaicanska sprintern Usain Bolt. I all denna fart levererar han hittar som Unknown Number, Jail, Badman Place och Hustlin’ på tunga Baddaz Riddim. Han gör även ett annorlunda coverval – Nightshift av The Commodores passar förvånansvärt bra i dancehalltappning.

Få grupper har haft ett sådant stort inflytande på reggaemusiken som legendariska The Heptones. Eller kanske snarare gruppens frontman Leroy Sibbles. Det var han som startade gruppen, det var han som var leadsångare och det är han som är ansvarig för otaliga klassiska låtar och riddims från skivbolaget Studio Ones storhetstid i slutet på 60-talet.

Och det här är hans kväll. Det märks tydligt i sättet han med järnhand styr bandet och sin Heptones-kollega Barry Llewellyn. Men han har kul och trivs trots att arrangörerna petat in bandet på tältscenen medan pojkarna i T.O.K tar huvudscenen i anspråk.

Leroy Sibbles bjuder på en kavalkad av hittar från 60-talet och försätter den lite åldriga publiken i ett glädjerus. Jag hade dock gärna hört några alster från perioden tillsammans med Lee Perry.

Kvällen avslutas med ivorianen Alpha Blondy som är här för andra gången. Även han har varit i reggaebranschen länge och har gett ut en rad starka plattor. Till kvällens spelning har han tagit med sig bandet Solar System, som för att förstärka världsmusikkänslan består av musiker från jorden runt. Tyvärr verkar de ha hittat gitarristen i något glamrockband i Tyskland. Han har nämligen inga som helst problem att riva av ett och annat meningslöst och glammigt gitarrsolo i tid och otid.

Alpha Blondy gör en vad som i vissa delar känns som en rutinspelning. Visst, energin finns där, och låtvalen också. Men jag saknar inlevelse.

Kanske har det med mig att göra. Efter nära nio timmar på ett festivalområde som på kvällen närmast liknar en ungdomsgård, så lockar annat än ringande mobiltelefoner, irriterande visselpipor och ölluktande kläder.

Sunday, July 19, 6:30 AM: system finally up and running again. Drink lots of water, contemplate a last-minute attempt to find out who the organizers are and contact them, decide this would only be an exercise in futility. Do some writing, back to bed at 9:30 AM, exhausted.

1:30 PM: awake again. Time to head to the concert!

2:07 PM: no uptown trains. What to do?

2:23 PM: Finally an uptown train, running express on the local track. Thank you Jah!

3:04 PM: The rent-a-pigs at the space are only letting people in one at a time. The line of potential concertgoers extends a quarter mile beyond the arena, and the opening band hasn’t even gone on yet. People standing listlessly with their ipods and their books – a woman reads Proust. Tolstoy would make more sense – she’s going to be here awhile. Time to find a drink – a bar? After Saturday night, no way. Maybe there’s a cheap deli somewhere? Not in this neighborhood. A leisurely stroll east ends at the Duane Reade over on First Avenue and 66th St. who have big cans of lousy, sweet iced tea for a dollar.

4:06 PM: Back at the arena where Lee “Scratch” Perry has taken the stage. Have seen him before. He’s insane. He’s also a genius. He invented dub reggae, then burned down his famous Black Ark studio where he made all those classic recordings. Now in his seventies, supposedly he lives in Switzerland with a much younger wife and still tours regularly: roast fish and collie weed obviously have a sustaining power for him. He’s not that good live, muttering gnomic Rasta “reasonings” over a live band. He worships marijuana – the plant isn’t just a sacrament to him, it’s the embodiment of the deity itself.  Meanwhile, the line remains exactly where it was an hour before. Perry isn’t the insane one here, it’s the people in line! Do they really think they have a prayer of getting inside the show? The woman reading Proust is gone, maybe home to get her copy of War & Peace. Time to take a stroll down to the plaza past the arena.

4:45 PM: Perry’s band is ok. A couple of times they do a little dub, some swirling, echoey organ, some piano but mostly it’s just one long vamp after another. From down the hill, most of Perry’s vocals are inaudible and those that aren’t don’t make any sense. Not that they’d make any more sense if they were. It would be nice to be able to see something but it’s also nice to be outside under the trees with plenty of space.

5:20 PM: The line has mostly disappeared, but the place is clearly sold out. Ivory Coast reggae legend Alpha Blondy has taken the stage, barely visible from beyond the wooden fence just short of the press tent outside. He’s got a couple of women singing harmony, a horn section, a couple of guitars and keyboards. He looks resplendent in his gold robe. The sound is all highs and lows with not much midrange, screechy guitar opening the show with a long, note-for-note Zeppelin riff, bass booming, hypnotic and comforting. Just down the hill behind the back wall of the arena, people have brought their blankets, their picnics, their beer. The sound is great back here, and it’s a lot more comfortable than having to stand inside. Scratch Perry’s deity is everywhere, in the air, in peoples’ lungs, in their red eyes. Time to find a tree that hasn’t been taken, get some back support. One with the earth, yes I! Alpha Blondy plays a greatest-hits show. Despite rumors of ill health, he sounds relaxed and invigorated, at least as invigorated as one can be over such a slinky, relaxed groove. Unity is his central theme: the unity of people, religions, ethnicities and nationalities. They play the big anthem Jerusalem and later the catchy title track from his landmark 1984 album Cocody Rock, recorded with the Wailers. Alpha Blondy sings in French, his native Dioula and in English on a particularly fiery, upbeat version of Staring Straight, later a rocking version of Life Is a Sacrifice with a seemingly endless, pointless metal guitar solo and then Yitzhak Rabin, his tribute to the assassinated Israeli peace crusader. Eventually they do band intros over the chorus of Bob Marley’s The Heathen and then an actually very moving reggae version of Wish You Were Here. He takes one of Roger Waters’ most poignant lyrics – “We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl year after year/Running over the same old ground/How we found the same old fear/Wish you were here” – and makes a chorus out of them, coming back to them again and again. The old guys in classic rock tour t-shirts leaning against the wire fence sway to the bassline; the crowd of enthusiastic Ivoirians at the top of the bleachers in the back of the arena wave their flags in time with the music. Suddenly it’s 1994 again.

S’il est un festival que j’aime, c’est bien le festival Musiques Métisses d’Angoulême. Pendant quatre jours, c’est comme si cette petite ville de Poitou-Charentes se transformait en un petit coin d’Afrique…

Cette année, la chaleur aidant, on s’y croyait vraiment. Sur l’île de Bourgines, dès l’après-midi, il y a toujours quelque chose à faire : les conférences et débats passionnants sous la tente de Littérature Métisses avec cette année, la présence remarquée de l’écrivain haïtien Dany Laferrière et de l’Américain Jake Lamar. Ou simplement flâner en regardant déambuler les Grandes Personnes, marionnettes géantes de Guinée. Avant le festival proprement dit, plusieurs des artistes ont été invités à des résidences : ils se sentent donc un peu «chez eux» et fraternisent avec les Angoumoisins.

Ainsi Maître Barry, génial saxophoniste de Conakry a joué avec les enfants comme devant les petits vieux des maisons de retraite et en garde un souvenir ému. Le soir de son concert « officiel», sous le chapiteau du Mandingue, ils sont nombreux à être venus le voir avec son combo de jeunes musiciens, dont un joueur de balafon et un bassiste stupéfiants. Mamadou Barry, en maître de cérémonie décline jazz, musique guinéenne et afrobeat avec autant d’aisance. Jugez plutôt dans cet extrait filmé par Mondomix!

La veille, ce furent ces jeunes compatriotes, les Espoirs de Coronthie, qui emballèrent le public avec leur soussou endiablé, leur trois chanteurs aux voix bien distinctes, mais complémentaires, leurs instruments de percussions et leur jeune prodige à la kora: Kandia Kouyaté.
Sur la grande scène, la sensation de l’année fut sans doute le trio constitué de Juldeh Camara, joueur gambien de riti (violon à une corde), de Justin Adams (guitariste de Robert Plant, arrangeur de deux des albums de Tinariwen) et du percussionniste Martin Barker. Ces trois-là balancent un rock africain comme on n’en a encore jamais entendu avant, à la fois branché sur les forces ancestrale et farouchement électrique.

Mais les «vieux» n’étaient pas en reste. Khaled, en chemise blanche, souriant, décontracté, entouré d’un big band acoustique, prouva qu’il tenait bien à faire un retour fracassant, un retour auquel on osait plus croire… Quant à Alpha Blondy, c’est deux heures de show reggae impeccable qu’il balança devant une salle pleine de fans. Et même si, comme moi, vous n’êtes pas une fanatique de reggae africain, vous auriez succombé à cette décharge de rythmes et de diatribes… La grande diva Oumou Sangaré est d’ailleurs venue sur scène saluer le chanteur ivoirien. Oumou Sangaré qui venait de le précéder avec son groupe malien. Elle en imposa comme à l’accoutumée. Des mélodies imparables, un tourbillon de rythmes et de cordes à la fois ancestrales et modernes et une façon tellement distinguée de lancer ses calebasses au-dessus de sa tête qu’on en reste magnétisé. Magnétisé encore par la classe de la jeune Mounira Mitchala, chanteuse tchadienne et protégée du Festival Musiques Métissses. Naturelle, élégante, elle chante avec la force de sa conviction des mélopées entêtantes de son pays retranscrites sur des guitares acoustiques et danse avec une légèreté, inversément proportionnelle à la difficulté de la mission qu’elle s’est fixée.

Et puisqu’il faut bien faire une critique, on peut seulement regretter que l’affiche 2009 du Festival n’ait pas inclus de groupes représentatifs des musiques urbaines du continent : rap, kuduro ou sound system comme Tumi and The Volume ou Didier Awadi lors des précédentes éditions.

Algo más de nota mereció Alpha Blondy, veterano autor reggae que tocara con The Wailers, la banda de Bob Marley. El hombre, agradecido por la presencia entre el público de varias banderas de su país, Costa de Marfil, aprovechó para pedir la paz en zonas del mundo en conflicto, como Somalia, Sudán, Afganistán o Palestina. Consiguió propagar su buena onda, propia del género, aunque de puro relax su música acabó resultando algo sedante. Versionó ‘Wish you were here’ (a lo reggae, por descontado) y dejó un buen sabor de boca gracias en parte a su banda, especialmente la sección de metales.

Un notable para la sorpresa de la noche, Tomasito, quien se vio relegado a uno de los escenarios secundarios, pero que aún así obtuvo el reconocimiento de los examinadores gracias a su casta, su energía y su poca vergüenza. Y es que después de entonar una selección de sus temas propios, este hermanastro musical de Muchachito y Delinqüentes atendió la petición de bises con ‘Camino del hoyo’, de Calaña y una cachonda versión españolizada del Back in black de AC/DC, para terminar su actuación en unos gayumbos de otra época.

Menudo espectáculo. Coreografías improvisadas, explosión instrumental (tuba, violines, percusiones, guitarras, acordeón, saxofón, teclados) y un Dr. Nelle moviéndose a una velocidad de vértigo. El escenario se oscurece y sólo vemos una guitarra iluminada con luces rojas girando en el ombligo de Ivica Maskimović. A la siguiente, traen al escenario un arco gigantesco con el que Čeda, el Gurú, recorre su violín. Para quedarse con la boca abierta.

Los asistentes, claro está, entregados. Participaron en la fiesta como un miembro más del conjunto, bailando, marcando las palmas y respondiendo a la voz del cantante: “Are you agree?” “Fuck you MTV!”.

The No Smoking Orchestra fascinaron con su mezcla de alegría desbordante y ese regusto melancólico que los convierte en únicos. Su música es una sinfonía casi circense, que llega a ser universal desde su particularidad local.

Monarcas de la música gitana del este de Europa, aderezada con toques punk, jazz y funk, pusieron la guinda a su concierto con ‘Bumara’, otro de sus símbolos musicales.

‘La vida es un milagro’, reza el título de una de las películas de Kusturica. Él y su banda, qué duda cabe, también lo son.

Toujours comme Fanette , je fais plus attention aux mots clé qui mènent les internautes à mon blog. D’ailleurs, dès aujourd’hui, je crée définitivement une nouvelle rubrique: Secrets des mots-clés.

Alors ce matin encore, je me suis amusée à pister les mots clés qui ont mené quelques lecteurs à mon blog. Et je ne suis pas déçue.

A commencer par  Boutique Rasta qui m’a fait découvrir ce site riche d’informations: dates de concerts, articles concernant des chanteurs raggae…

D’ailleurs j’ai découvert grâce à ce lien que Lucky Dube, le raggae man dont je vous parlais ici, ce chanteur talentueux et engagé, assassiné en pleine rue en Afrique du Sud, peut aujourd’hui reposer en paix. Ses assassins ont été retrouvés, ils viennent d’être condamnés.

Toujours grâce à Boutique roots, je me suis délectée de la musique de Alpha Blondy. Le grand et l’unique. Je vous en parlerai plus amplement dans un article spécial.

Alpha blondy, c’est le premier vrai reggae man ivoirien, qui a suivi les traces du grand Bob Marley. Il s’est même rendu en Jamaique, a travaillé un de ses albums avec les Wailers. Je ne vous en dis pas plus. Un petit prélude tout de même au prochain Alpha Blondy news.

Comme la plupart de ses frères, Ziggy a fait exactement, non presque comme papa Marley. Ziggy chante et j’aime sa musique. Un jour je parlerai aussi de Ziggy.

En dehors de la boutique Roots, les mots clés m’ont aussi conduit à Belstaff, la fameuse veste Belstaff. Willykean en parle là, l’Express aussi. Et toujours en parlant de Belstaff, les recherches de mes lecteurs m’ont conduit à Manuele Malonetti.

Quant au boubou sénégalais, il m’a fait tourner en boucle. Mes recherches me ramènent au boubou de Ségolène. Pour ceux et celles qui ne l’ont pas lu. J’ai écrit: VIse mon boubou, je suis une femme de ménage.
