The grand finale. Two great bands to see. (Well one great one, and one trading off past greatness). This was going to seal the weekends festivities on a positive note.

We didn’t get there too early. 7pm-ish. First problem – Echo and The Bunnymen were a no-show! Apparently McCulloch didn’t board the flight. I’m assuming that he couldn’t face the embarrassment of trawling through the turgid pop-fest of “The Fountain”. Alternatively, he cold have left “The Fountain” at home and just come out to Dubai with his first 4 albums. We’d have been happy with that. Very happy in fact. But he chose to disappoint his (small) group of fans in Dubai. In retrospect I ended on a high rather than a disappointment and that was good, so thanks.

First up were/was (?) Dan Black. Toby Kebble look-alike (Northern Soul/Dead Mans Shoes era) with extreme-low-slung-gussett action. His MySpace page said Jay-Z and Sigur Ros as influences. ??? Stumped. Not impressed. All I remember was the guy leaping around, like an E-fuelled Quazimodo. Pants. (Literally).

Then came half of The Parlotones. Apparently the other half didn’t clear Dubai Immigration. The singer explained that this wasn’t their normal way of making music and that they didn’t feel too comfortable. But, they put on a good show. They sounded great. Of course, quite minimal (only rhythm guitar and drums), but enjoyable. The vocals were some of the best I’d heard all weekend. They obviously didn’t feel comfortable and exited after only a few tracks. Shame. They probably do fit into my bed-wetters category, and his David Gray-esque head wobbling annoyed me, as did his hat, but, they turned up and sounded great in less than optimal circumstances. Respect is due. Thanks.

Alphabeat. Where did these come from (ok – Denmark)? What I mean is, where were these supposed to fit in tonights billing? This was Euro-pop  in its most extreme. Hints of Aqua. Barbie doll vocals. Lots of leaping, prancing and tambourine beating. They should have been on at Chi, not warming up the crowd before the Super Furry Animals. Bad choice of sequencing. Not bad. Just not me. More MacDonalds kids party than SoundCity.

By the time the Super Furry Animals came on stage I was looking for a lifeline. Something to rescue the festival from a poor Day 2 and a confused Day 3. Of course they didn’t disappoint. I can’t remember their whole set. Gruff name-checked  the absent headliners with “We’re Echo and The Bunnymen, from Cardiff”! They focussed on “Dark Days/Light Years”; “Crazy Naked Girls”, “Mt.”, “Inaugural Trams” and “The Very Best Of Neil Diamond”. From the back catalogue I remember “Demons”, “Slowlife”, “Rings Around The World” and “Juxtapozed With U”. Considering the size of the crowd (which had started to drift away), we had a rousing rendition of “Earth” accompanied with appropriate signage and silly finger waving. Brilliant.

SFA rescued the weekend. They sent me home on a high. Mrs. P saw them for the first time and, naturally, was bowled over. Doves and SFA. Two bands bookending the festival and to be truthful making it worth the entrance fee.

Ritornano. Con il loro carico di allegria ed il loro sound retrò stile anni’80. Gli Alphabeat, gruppo danese di Silkeborg ci riprovano, sull’onda di “Fascination“, il singolo che li fece conoscere anche da noi dopo aver conquistato la Scandinavia con l’album “This is alphabeat“.

Questo blog aveva già parlato del primo singolo ed anche del segno “Boyfriend”, tormentone che però non ha avuto il successo del precedente. Adesso arriva “The spell“, che è anche la trcak title dell’album. Nuovo look per la cantante, stesse sonorità e grande allegria ballereccia. Quando le canzoni spensierate sanno essere originali.

Aproveitemos para curtir o feitiço do Alphabeat. Outro cd que tá sendo protelado, já que ia ser lançado em novembro e agora só em Janeiro no UK, pra nossa sorte foi lançado dia 26 agora na terra natal da banda, Dinamarca, e pelos poderes concedidos pela net, o cd pode ser ouvido na íntegra.

Depois do carro chefe, The Spell, e das declarações da banda que a sonoridade viria inspirada no eletro do começo dos anos 90 de bandas como Snap!, muita gente torceu o nariz, já que o rock super feliz da banda virou um dos sons mais regozijados do ano passado. Claro que tanta felicidade soava às vezes até assustadora, era muita celebração. Bem, agora tanta celebração juvenil vem num recheio dance, que por incrível que pareça serviu MUITO melhor para a proposta da banda que o power pop do primeiro álbum. E a prova está no carro chefe. Usando como base um hit do grupo italiano Black Box que bombou na virada da década de 80 pra de 90, priorizando os vocais da Stine e seguindo a música com a batida e o teclado, cada instrumento surge para dar uma luz na voz deliciosa da ex loira. Fácil, produzido? Bem, a função da música é pôr pra dançar e dançar ela faz como poucas esse ano conseguiram. A única crítica que posso fazer a essa faixa é que só tem 2 frases cantadas pelo Anders duas vezes, e a voz dele roubava a cena da voz da Stine sempre. Mas nessa embalagem dance, a voz da Stine brilha com mais força que antes, e o cd segue dando certa relevância a moça em detrimento do rapaz, e vez ou outra ambas as vozes sofrem uso de vocoders por vezes desnecessários, como em The Beat Is.

Mas a energia do álbum segura esse problema, mantendo as batidas do começo ao fim, inundando as faixas com buzinas, teclados, sintetizadores, vocais deliciosos e as letras sempre gostosinhas de se cantar da banda. Embora não muito ambiciosas nos temas, são sempre ingênuas no ponto, e dessa vez tratando por vezes de temas metalinguísticos. The Beat Is e Dj formam um combo de duas músicas onde a paixão da música gerando novas paixões transfere todo o entusiasmo que se precisa para uma pista de dança, separardas por um dos pontos altos do cd, a fantástica Hole In My Heart, onde Anders começa a música cantando, para receber a resposta de Stine, chegando num dos refrões mais eficientes que a banda já fez. Mas a cereja do bolo mesmo é Heat Wave, que com ecos de La Bouche, traz Stine no seu mais enérgico, acompanhada de um baixo sutil mas libidinoso e dum crescendo na extrutura ponte-refrão que desagua glorioso no refrão mais forte da banda, conhecida por esse talento. Esse one-two-three-four-five punch de músicas pra pista já garantiria uma recomendação do cd.

Pena que daí pra frente as coisas comecem a decair. De alguma forma uma coisa boa, Chess vem como filler logo após essa sequência vencedora, derrubando a energia do cd com uma ponte chata e um refrão muito lightpop, e a tentativa da Stine de soar sensual não ajuda nessa faixa, que consegue a proeza de ser mal datável, ao contrário das anteriores que remetiam a tempos antigos mas onde os truques da produção traziam um ar de frescor às faixas. Após Chess, o cd só se recupera mesmo graças à gloriosa Always Up With You, que consegue a proeza de superar o truque usado anteriormente no cd (e que faz Hole In My Heart tão boa), mas pela ordem das faixas ajuda o cd a resgatar a energia da primeira parte, deixando as duas faixas do cd num clima meio que de filler por culpa da queda de Chess, mas ainda assim de fillers bem feitos como o dos álbuns de light pop suecos da segunda metade da década de 90, mesmo que sejam faixas competentes ao seu modo, e The Right Thing com o tecladinho sem vergonha que surge na hora certa para temperar os vocais do duo, termina o cd com a mesma energia que ele começa, usando de truques mais modernos para trazer a faixa mais para os 00’s.

Apesar de um ou outro tropeço de over produção, de um ou outro filler, uma vez que esse cd entre em ingnição, e acreditem quando falo que não leva 30 segundos, podem descansar que a festa vai acontecer tranquila pelos próximos 37 minutos. Retrô sem ser brega, deliciosamente nada ambicioso, The Spell tem a seu favor o fato de que o duo de vocais é excepcional e eles sabem fazer um bom refrão como poucos. Não é buscando ser memorável, é buscando ser bom, e nisso eles são mais que eficientes. Ao menos por enquanto o feitiço deles é bem poderoso sim, e torcer o nariz por essa mudança seria tolice. Alphabeat fez um segundo strike.

Faixa a faixa correta, mas da 2 à 7 vai precisar de correção no media player, ok?

Dagens tur skulle være en gang tempoløb ifl. mit løbeprogram, men jeg var meget uoplagt i dag. Jeg havde ikke været ude at løbe siden mandag, jeg har haft travlt, så det er ikke blevet til mere. For at komme ud af døren var min indstilling til turen og forventning til samme, at jeg bare skulle ud og røres. Ingen forventning om, at det var den store træningsindsats, som jeg skulle opbyde.

Den taktik bruger jeg, når jeg kan mærke, at jeg egentlig overhovedet ikke gider at løbe en tur dén dag. Og det sker jo. Oftere end jeg bryder mig om. Mine tanker om årsagerne må vendes en anden gang. Men når jeg ved, at sofaen vil kalde, og jeg kan finde på mange overspringshandlinger, tænker jeg ikke så meget; det er bare langsomt at bevæge sig ind i soveværelset og tage løbetøjet på, finde uret og iPod’en frem, skoene på og så ud af døren.

Når jeg så er ude af døren, begynder tankerne allerede at have deres eget liv. De flyver og flakser lidt rundt, mens jeg får spændt hunden om livet, får fundet musik eller podcast frem, mens vi går raskt til ned mod stien, som leder os over i skoven. På et tidspunkt er jeg blevet lidt varmere og lunter derudaf for at få varmet benene lidt mere op. Og så på underfundig vis er jeg kommet af sted….

Turen i dag blev på 6,5 km med en gms-hastighed på 6:08 min/km. Der er gennemsnitligt en af de hurtigere ture for mig, for der er stop undervejs; hunden ud af eller i snoren igen, hundens tisse- og snusepauser, som skal til, når hun har været snydt for gode ture i løbet af ugen. De første par kilometer var hårde, jeg gad ikke, ville hellere gå og var genstridig inde i mit eget hoved. Men så strejfede mine tanker, Pink, Gwen Stefani og Alphabeat gav rytmen, og så fik jeg sparket derudaf. Sådan føltes det ihvertfald men det har sikkert ikke helt set sådan ud.

Dejlig tur alligevel, trods ugidelighed, ca. 6°, overskyet, knætights, langærmet T, kortærmet udover, vindjakke, refleksvest, dioder på armen, pandebånd og handsker. De sidste blev ikke engang taget af undervejs, så vinteren er kommet. Skoven stadig smuk, men det var faktisk mørkt, inden jeg nåede hjem.

Jeg glæder mig til min nye pandelampe kommer. Den mangler nu….

It’s been a relatively quiet year for Alphabeat while they’ve been busy writing and recording their new album, but the Danish popsters are back in full stride, as they roll into Newcastle on the second night of their mini UK tour to promote their new single The Spell.

Following a rather tiresome wait of an hour-and-a-half, the first and only support act of the night comes in the form of  Ou Est Le Swimming Pool as they burst into their unique brand of energising electro pop. While the two guys on vocals look like they should be Butlins holiday reps, songs such as Jackson’s Last Stand and The Key prove to be a hit, as their infectious synth beats and vibrant vocals get bodies boogying across the floor of the Academy 2; an impressive performance.

It may be a dreary night outside, but inside it’s all smiles, as tonight’s headliners Alphabeat take to the stage – wearing matching white outfits – as they unleash their colourful and cheery set of feel-good pop. Female vocalist Stine Bramsen, who, in contrast, is dressed in a glitzy black number, greets the Newcastle crowd with, “It’s nice to see you!” and, no doubt, the feeling is mutual, as the band is met with a succession of chants.

A 14-song set, mostly filled with tunes from their debut album This Is Alphabeat – full of quirky energy, funky base and sickenly sweet synth, along with the studio-perfect and interchanging boy/girl vocals of Anders SG and Stine, and we even see Anders SG dabble in some astonishingly overzealous bongo and tambourine bashing.

New single The Spell is performed early on and garters one of the most enthusiastic responses of the night. What Is Happening also proves to be popular, generating a mass sing-a-long and hundreds of hands waving simultaneously. Other hits such as 10,000 Nights and Stine’s “favourite”, the disco-y Boyfriend, as well as their cover of Ain’t Nobody, get the Academy 2 floor bouncing -  literally,  and it’s evident that the band are just as thrilled as its audience with their permanent grins.

As Alphabeat leave the stage, they shortly re-emerge to perform forthcoming single DJ and, of course, the smash Fascination. The extended intro, with the crowd repeating, ‘The word is on your lips – say the word’, for almost a minute, perfectly builds the song up before exploding into a full-on frenzy.

Following tonight’s performance, it’s clear that Alphabeat are back on track and most definitely deserve to be playing to more than 400; a truly poptastic evening.

While promoting new single The Spell, Faye sat down with Anders SG and Troels of the Danish pop sensation Alphabeat, ahead of their Newcastle show during the band’s mini UK tour. We got talking to the chart toppers about the new album, signing to Polydor, future plans, and that X-Factor performance of Fascination, as well as a whole lot more.

Faye: Can you say your names and what you do?
Anders SG: I’m Anders SG and I sing.
Troels: I’m Troels and I’m the drummer.

Faye: You’ve been a bit quiet this year, what have you been up to?
Anders SG: We’ve actually just been focusing 100% on doing the new album that’s coming out around January/February, so that’s what we’ve been doing. We just decided that we didn’t want to play any gigs at all while making the record, just to be fully focused on that.
Troels: Yeah, this is our first tour after we finished touring last year, so it’s great to be back and playing live again.

Faye: You released the single The Spell last week, I believe it got to 20 in the UK charts, but number one in Denmark, are you happy with the response here?
Anders SG: You can’t really complain about it, it’s a top 20 single, so we’re really happy with that. We just hope we can build it back up again, because I guess we’re back with a new sound and everything, so people maybe have to adjust a bit to that, so we’ll just build on.

Faye: The single comes from your new album, also titled The Spell, what can we expect from it?
Anders SG: Compared to the first album, this time we wanted to make a 100% pop album, so we basically got rid of all live instruments and tried to program everything a lot more in our studio. I think it’s a lot more pop and has a lot more of a synthetic feel to it, but that was exactly what we wanted to do and it’s very influenced by early nineties dance music, we just think that was a really good time in dance music, where a lot of the songs had a really good feel to them. Whereas, some dance music can be quite cold and we’re not really a cold band, so we thought that, that period of time would fit very well with our band.
Troels: This time round, because with the last album, a lot of people liked the fact that not all of the songs sounded the same and this time round we’ve got different kind of beats and sounds. Some of it was influenced by R’n'B and some of it’s very nineties.
Anders SG: The next single that’s coming out is probably a bit different, it’s very nineties, but it’s more ravey-nineties. I think people will understand that it’s sort of the same, but it’s just a bit different.

Faye: You had quite a few hits with your last album, was there pressure with this album to produce more hits?
Anders SG: You know, you can’t really sit around and think about that, I think you’ll just go mental if you think about it every time you make a song or if you try to compare it to the old stuff. You always have to do what you feel is right and that’s what we’ve done with this album.
Troels: And, again, we toured a lot last year, so it was great to come back after Christmas and just start from scratch and do anything, because I think we were all ready to get it kicked off and write the next album.

Faye: The new album was released yesterday in Denmark, do you have any idea how well it’s doing sales-wise yet?
Anders SG: It’s number two on iTunes right now, so that’s good.
Troels: And number one on of the second biggest download page in Denmark, and it’s been shipped quite well to the shops as well, so hopefully it’ll do as well as the single, because the single, it’s been pretty mental actually because it came out in late August or something on radio, and was released in late September, and since then it’s been number one and number two, and been constantly number one on iTunes. That’s a bit weird, because we really didn’t expect it because we haven’t been in Denmark since September last year, when we played our last gig there.
Anders SG: Yeah, we play in London, so we feel like we’ve just abandoned Denmark. [laughs] So, we thought they would have forgotten everything about us and didn’t really care, so we are really, really pleased about that.

Faye: I believe that the UK release date for the new album has been pushed back from November to January, how come?
Anders SG: We kept on writing songs, so we talked to the label and told them that we had some new songs that we really wanted to go on the album, and if they had to go on the album, which we really wanted them to be, we had to push everything back. So, that’s basically why, we’re just happy that we have some more songs that we really like one it. The Spell was written in January and some of the other songs on the album were written very last minute in August, during that period of time we’ve developed a lot.

Faye: You changed labels from EMI to Polydor with this album, didn’t you? Are you much happier now?
Anders SG: Yeah, Polydor, it’s just a really good place for us, it was just nice because when we left EMI, we were kind of up for grabs for every label and right away, we started getting offers and we were in the situation where we were first time round, where we could just pick whoever we wanted, so that was really nice and we ended up with Polydor. The fact that we’ve changed our style a bit, it’s just really cool to be on a new label, because they feel like it’s their thing, you know? And in that way, they’re more enthusiastic about it, I think.

Faye: You’ve obviously had lots of success in Europe, do you have any plans to try and break other places like America and Asia?
Anders SG: We would love that, we got an offer to go on tour with Katy Perry last December in the States for about three months, so we would have done that this Spring and we said no, because we really wanted to do the new album, so that was kind of a priority thing. I think it’s the same with everything band in the world, it’s insane if you don’t want to do well in Asia or the States, but it’s a big and difficult market over there, it’s very R’n'B-based. We do get so many emails from people in the States saying, “Why can’t we have this?!” So, there’s definitely some people over there who are fans.

Faye: Did you see The X-Factor performance of Fascination last week? What did you think of it?
Troels: For us, it was a bit surreal, because we had a rehearsal after Sunday and we had just been out for dinner, and we got back and we were like, “Ok, there’s a TV, our bus is here in an hour and it’s 8pm”, so we turned it on…
Anders SG: At the exact time they were performing Fascination.
Troels: It was a bit weird.
Anders SG: A bit dodgy. [laughs] We were all like, “Oh! That’s interesting…” [laughs] I don’t know, my girlfriend always says that with our songs, it seems so unreal when other people are doing them, she feels that it’s only us that can play them and that it’s a completely different song when other people are doing it.
Troels: We don’t have any influence on what’s going on in The X-Factor, they pick whatever they want. It’s just a place where music is put up, then suddenly it can actually become a hit if it’s something people have forgotten all about, like the Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah thing that she [Alexandra Burke] kind of ripped and then suddenly Jeff Buckley is in the top 10 again, it’s like no one would have knew about Jeff Buckley if they didn’t watch The X-Factor. That thing could have happened to Fascination as well if it was a bit older.

Faye: What made you want to sing and write in English as opposed to Danish?
Troels: I think everyone in Denmark is writing in English, really.
Anders SG: Now they are, but at the time when we started out, a lot of Danish artists were writing lyrics in Danish and we really hated it at the time. We never talked about it actually, it was a natural thing for us, to do it in English.
Troels: And like every guy like us, at 16-years-old, we picked up our guitar and started writing songs like our idols and we learn English from fourth grade or something like that, so for us and to Danes, it’s probably natural to speak in English as well as in Danish.

Faye: Are the Danish charts full of English-speaking artists at the moment?
Both: No.
Troels: That’s the thing, there’s a lot of Danish music in the charts. I was Tweeting about our single being number one in Denmark, and I was hoping to put big names behind us like, who we beat in the top five, but it was only Danish people. [laughs] So, it was a lot like, “We beat a lot of Danish dudes” and put Robbie Williams in somewhere. [laughs]

Faye: Can you tell me an interesting fact about Denmark?
Anders SG: It probably has the best bike culture in the whole world, actually. I think it’s Denmark and Holland that are the best countries to bike in, because all of the infrastructure in Copenhagen and all the big cities in Denmark, everything is built around bike paths, you can go anywhere by them, but if you do that in London or any other city in England, you’ll probably just get killed. [laughs]
Troels: Japanese tourists like taking pictures of them, because it looks so funny, they’re everywhere.

Faye: If I was to go to Denmark, where would I visit?
Anders SG: We’ve all lived in Copenhagen and I think it’s a really unique city, it’s very unlike any other place I’ve ever been. It has that big city feel, but it’s very cosy and low-key. People from here would probably like Copenhagen.

Faye: What’s next for Alphabeat after this UK tour?
Troels: We’re aiming to do maybe do a couple of concerts in Denmark before Christmas.
Anders SG: We’re just doing loads of promo up until Christmas and then we’re releasing a new single in January, just before the album, then it’s just touring, so that’s what’s coming up.

Faye: Will you be touring the UK again when the album is released?
Anders SG: Yeah, because we’re only doing seven or eight dates on this tour, and then we’re going to do a full tour, probably about 20 dates.

Faye: Will you be playing venues of the same size or bigger?
Anders SG: I don’t know, we’ll have to see how everything turns out. I really like the fact we’re playing these size venues, it’s like 500 and to sell out venues like this is really nice, but we’ll just see what the demand is, but the last time around, we played places up to 2500, so it’s just building everything up again.
Troels: Of course, it would be fun to play the big Academy stage here, but it wouldn’t be as fun as standing in front of 400 because they would disappear in that big room. Yesterday, we had 550 people in a very small room, kind of similar to this one today and it was just really, really great because everything gets really hot and sweaty, it’s a good vibe, we like that. Of course, it’s fun to play 2500 people, but you don’t see anyone, so here you really get close to them and see who they are.

Faye: Do you tend to play bigger venues in Denmark?
Anders SG: Yeah, we played some huge festivals with about 20,000 people.
Troels: The festivals are the biggest things in Denmark because people can just show up and you can have 20,000 people in front of you. The venues in Copenhagen, you have to be like Lady Gaga or Kings of Leon to play the bigger venues, like 6,000-10,000 people and, in Denmark, a Danish band has it hard selling a place like that out because they’re Danish. But we enjoy playing the big venues in Copenhagen and places like that.

Faye: Change the record, who should we be listening to?
Anders SG: You should listen to this Swedish band called The Sound of Arrows, they’re two guys. Swedes are actually very good at making a guy duo playing pop music in a very cool and semi-credible way, they’re just really, really good. There’s a Danish band called Private, who are very good as well, they make brilliant pop music as well.

Faye: Is pop mainly what you listen to? Do you listen to anything that would surprise us? Any heavier music?
Anders SG: I think, in the band, we all have an open relationship with music, we like everything that’s good, but we really like pop music. When we were younger, we listened a lot to rock music and I grew up listening to rock music but, now, guilty pleasures, for me, are Kings Of Leon. [laughs] Because I’m so much into pop music, but, in the band, I think we listen to everything, if there’s a good quality to it, then it doesn’t really matter.

We clicked on the link and low and behold, there I am bopping away in the bottom right hand corner!

I think I might have to start locking myself indoors from now on!

Alphabeat’s second album The Spell has leaked. The album is lush with early dance beats in tribute to 90s’ house music and just general fun. News is out that the next single from the aforementioned album is DJ. It’s a fun sing-along kind of track, which has the potential to be nicely remixed. We can’t wait for the video and the sleeve.

Casts The Spell on us.

Muso’s Guide gave me the opportunity to experience my first foray into the exciting and murky world of video, using my 5D MKII (it’s primarily a stills camera for those who are not sad and geeky enough to understand such matters).

I’m pretty happy with the results considering it was my first time. Australian fun-indie-types Teenagersintokyo were the first band involved in the new feature and were great company, as well as being a fine band too. Danish pop band, Alphabeat are back! They’ve released their current single The Spell in Denmark and it already peaked to #1. Their new album titled after their first single, The Spell brings an early 90’s dance feel which makes you want to sing nto your hair brush in front of the mirror in your underwear! Their music is fun and fresh and would make any Pop lover happy!

I feel so ill at the moment, not sure what’s up, just a bit coldy and a bit stuffy, my head felt like it was melting earlier.

It’s so frustrating, I hate being ill, just when you take so long to think of things, or you just get stupider, been such a frustrating day today.

At least the telly tonight promises to be a bonus, new Office and Always Sunny tonight, then Watford vs Sheff Wed, followed by new Peep Show. Good night. I can’t wait for the football, see how Danny Graham’s progressed since he left us, he certainly seems to be doing quite well, more so than the rest of our strikers anyway.

Sorry it’s short but I feel rubbish.

Alphabeat – Fascination

I quite like their new song too, so so cheesy but pretty fun.

The highly-touted second album from our favorite Danish band Alphabeat has leaked. The Spell takes a different direction in tribute to the great pop sound of early 90s’ house music and vocals. The lead single “The Spell” shows just that. The album is supposed to be released November 2nd in the UK.
