Scripture memory was such a vital and fruit bearing discipline in the early days of my following Christ. While I ‘technically’ accepted Christ as my Savior during a youth retreat in January of my 8th grade year, I chose the world and my flesh over a life led by the Holy Spirit throughout my High School years. Yes, my dear children have sucked my memory completely (!!!!!), but I do remember trying to change several times throughout my high school days. I remember trying to make friends with those who I thought would help me and hold me accountable to the ways of Christ. I remember longing to know the community that I saw certain Christian clicks were experiencing. Yet I couldn’t fully let go of past pain, image, world, and reputation. I had good days, weeks, and months, but the underlying reality was that I was in bondage to a life I knew was not God’s best. It wasn’t until college that I finally allowed the Holy Spirit to set me free. December of my freshman year in college, I chose Christ over self. I was surrounded by a passionate and patient Christian Community in college….and that coupled with the struggle and hardship of a major hip surgery flung me to my face in desperate need of the One True God.

I will never forget some of my first moments with the discipline of scripture memory. I remember being in my hospital gown, 18 years old, walking the halls at M.D. Anderson with a walker and my mother helping me memorize scriptures that I had written out on a few sheets of notebook paper. I remember the pain I experienced as the nurses tried to roll me onto that hip to change my bed sheets and screaming out to the Lord. I remember the peace that came over me when she spoke the Word of God out loud and proclaimed His truth in the midst of physical suffering. For the first time, God’s Word took residence in my body and transformed every part of me and I have never been the same. I am thankful to my mother for speaking those words into my heart. I am thankful for the students that surrounded me at First Baptist and the BSM for being living examples of the power of God’s truth.

Having years of those moments where God’s Word has exposed, convicted, healed, encouraged, and transformed me, I have NO CLUE why I did not think to start the practice of Scripture memory with my children earlier than now. It was always in the back of my mind as a goal, and done on occasion even, but never a consistent practice. Part of me has been lazy about it, and part of me needed some kind of plan. Susan Hunt’s My ABC Bible Verses: Hiding God’s Word in Little Hearts has been just the kick in the bum that I needed….and I stand in awe once again at the power of the Word of God. Being that Logan is my first 5 year old, I’m humbly learning how to parent, what to do, and when. And mark my words, this is the start of a new home. I was unaware of what Scripture could do in such a tiny little person, but God’s Word has no boundaries, it truly does not return void. In just four short weeks, I see a different child, our conversations have changed, the ponderings of his heart and whispers of his mouth are not what the were before. Just today as we are driving home I can hear him whispering to himself in his carseat…”Jesus is the light, Jesus is the lamb, Jesus is life, Jesus is Savior, Jesus is God.” I little tear of praise trickled down my cheek as I heard the small voice proclaiming such beautiful truth behind me. Thank you Lord for being a God who is not silent. Thank you for the Holy Spirit inspired Words written down for us to love and learn and bind to our hearts. Thank you that Your Word has no limit. There is truly none like You.

There are lots of ways to do Scripture memory with children, and lots of resources at our fingertips. My only word of wisdom is to just begin and be amazed at the fruit that pours forth.

Here are the materials we have been using for our letters if you would like some ideas! This is a fun part of the kids day. I set it out the night before our first day of the new letter so they come down with hungry tummies to find a fun activity on the table while they wait for breakfast (see letter I for an example)! This might be more for me than it is for them….as they never complain or whine for me to get breakfast going at 6:45 when they have something creative to do. I love a whine free morning!

I will add letters as we go!

I decided to dedicate a post just to the Alphabet Books I have found so far. This post will grow all summer as I’m sure there are thousands!! These have been the ones that we have found at our library and renewed several times!! We have done several things with them such as…. I will put out several of the ABC books on the floor and say to the bigger boys “who can find the letter D first?!” They race to find the page with the correct letter (Bennett usually goes to the B page because he is in a very proud state over the fact that he knows his name starts with a B). I have also done a game with Logan where I tell him to spell a word using one page from each book. So he will use the A from one, R from another, and T from another. They are also great dinner table occupiers when I have five more minutes of dinner prep to do and everyone seems to be sitting & waiting on mom . Add your fav’s to the list and we will check them out!

We began I week today with a great trip to the Blue Bell factory for ICE CREAM!! We were able to me

We began I week today with a great trip to the Blue Bell factory for ICE CREAM!! We were able to meet up with a precious friend of mine from high school and her two darling daughters. It was a blessing to laugh and chat and take joy in the precious moments of our children playing together. Blue bell was really fun for the boys. They were mesmerized by the machines!! Did you know it takes 50,000 cows to produce the amount of milk they need for one day of their ice cream production? That is craziness, right? The boys loved seeing the buckets fill with flavor and called the bluebell workers “soooo creative!!!” Other I things so far are….I have been saving boxes and paper towel rolls for them to “Invent” something, the big boys are going to paint with ice & Nate will play with ice & water in a zip lock bag. I has been a more challenging letter….ideas welcome for the next go round’!!

I books are few and far between: Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni, The Sundae Scoop by Stuart J. Murphy, Dog and Cat Shake a Leg by Kate Spohn, India the Showstopper by Kerry Argent, I Can’t Talk Yet but When I Do by Julie Markes, When I Grow Up by Leonid Gore (These are just from the library, I haven’t had time to go through all our yet so hopefully more to come!)

J just happens to fall on July 4! So we will be enjoying the traditional parade & fireworks (unless Alex brings the rain all weekend). Plus we are having a community festival after church in which there will be some serious Jumping going on (bouncy house!!). We will be making jello shapes and putting on a jousting match….stick horses included!!! We are looking forward to a weekend full of J!I also ended up with some cute last minute ideas from Counting Coconuts. We did some star sorting, small to big. I also made a flag with no stars & the kids rolled the dice and added the corrosponding amount of stars.

J books so far include: The Berenstain Bears and Mama’s New Job, Jump by Scott M. Fischer, Potato Joe by Keith Baker, Jack’s Talent by Maryann Cocca-Leffler, Sally Gets a Job by Stephen Huneck, Jellybeans by Sylvia van Ommen, Jungle Bullies by Steven Kroll.

While the Alphabet Adventure is “all about the kids,” I have to admit, G/ H week has sta

While the Alphabet Adventure is “all about the kids,” I have to admit, G/ H week has started off to be loads of fun for us all. There have been moments this week that will surface over others in my memory. I can still hear the kids laughing together, I can see the blackberry juice all over their hands, I can feel them laying on my lap during a late night at the game. These are precious times the Lord has given us. I am humbled by the Father’s love shown through these tiny hands and feet that fill our home.

We just finished G tonight with a fabulous game of “Glow Stick Tag” (#70 in Faith-filled Moments) and talked about what it means for Christ to be the light of the world. We ended with a rendition of This Little Light of Mine and lots of laughter as Nate screamed “NO” to the bushel at the top of his lungs throughout. It was a great performance by all. We spent this week focusing on a couple of things: grandparents & gardens. The boys had swimming lessons with my dad & stepmom and a fun afternoon with my mom reading lots of grandparent books. We couldn’t resist using G for our beloved San Francisco Giants and took Logan & Bennett to the game last night (only to see the Astros win, what???!!!) with our youth group. Today we rounded out G with a trip to Neal’s to explore all their homegrown produce, pick blackberries, and buy some local veggies for garden fresh ratatouille!! We ended the day with making grammie’s homemade granola. Everything on the table tonight was from the garden- the dinner, the flowers, the dessert, it was wonderful and the kids loved eating G up!!

Just what I hoped would not happen, has….it is F week and there is still a fever in this house

Just what I hoped would not happen, has….it is F week and there is still a fever in this house!! Seriously. I’m not sure what else to say about this except that it is just not fair to have a child throwing up on me on my thirtieth birthday . I was selfish, I cried, I got over it, but this is the second time I’ve had to cancel blueberry picking for fever, boooooo.

Our E days have been quite low maintenance due to Nate getting sick again. My husband works for Silverado which is an amazing company that serves people with family members suffering from Alzheimer’s & Dementia. We love his job for so many reasons, one being that we get to expose the children to the elderly on a monthly basis. Our plan was to do a service project with our friends at The Woodlands Silverado Community but we will have to postpone this so we don’t give the virus to them. If you are looking for a way to live out missions locally (beyond you neighbors), a senior living center like Silverado offers activities that you can do with the residents such as gardening, cooking, games, salon/ manicures, woodshop, etc. And, they adore children…..for those suffering with A/D it is such good therapy for them to see the littles. What did we manage to do for E?? We had an EGG taste test!! We made hard-boiled, fried, scrambled & omelets and everyone picked their favorite, it was actually really fun (and a little “Runaway Bride-ish” of us!!) We went to the Elementary School park where Logan will start Kindergarten in September, he was thrilled to explore & dream about all the fun to be had. We did our E Bible lesson & scripture memory from Hunt’s book (which I am loving so much I think I will have to blog separately about it!). Tonight we poured over The Eleventh Hour by Greame Base, thank you Amy!!

Other E Books: The Easter Egg Farm by Mary Jane Auch, Ernest and Elston by Laura T. Barnes, Elliot’s Emergency by Andrea Beck and Elephants on Board by Suse MacDonald, The Earth and I by Frank Asch, Eyes and Ears by Seymour Simon, Ella the Elegant Elephant by Carmela & Steven D’amico.

We have high hopes for F (don’t I keep saying this?!). It happens to be Father’s Day on Sunday, so I’m lovin’ how perfectly our Alphabet is working into the summer . We have a book that we add pictures & letters to every year for Daniel so we will be working on that this week. Our outing will be to our local fire department for a special tour (treats in hand for our local firemen…who have been to our house, haha!!)! We are having a Family night where we will be playing football, doing bubbles with fly swatters, making forts, playing flashlight tag & finger painting (you want to come over don’t you)!! Our faith lesson will be #14 on forts from Faith-filled moments on top of our normal F lesson from Hunt.

F books are plentiful: Franklin series by Paulette Bourgeois, The Very Busy Farm by Alicia Zadrozny, Richard Scarry’s The Firefighters’ Busy Day, Frog & Toad Series by Arnold Lobel, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly by Simms Taback, The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, Show Each Other Forgiveness by Melody Carlson, Fred the Firefighter by Jo Litchfield, Full House: An Invitation To Fractions by Dayle Ann Dodds, Faraway Farm by Ian Whybrow, Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni, Into the Forest by Anthony Browne, The Firefighters by Sue Whiting, Farmer Joe & the Mustic Show by Tony Mitton, Friday My Radio Flyer Flew by Zachary Pullen, Crazy Like a Fox: A Simile Story by Loreen Leedy, To Fly: The Story of The Wright Brothers by Wendie C. Old, Flip, Float, Fly: Seeds On The Move by JoAnn Early Macken, Fantastic Feats and Failures by YES Mag, Fox by Kate Banks, The Farm Team by Linda Bailey, A Friend by Anette Bley. Happy Reading

Though we didn’t start off so strong, there is hope that C/D week will slightly better (fever

Though we didn’t start off so strong, there is hope that C/D week will slightly better (fever STILL staying put)! I have been wanting to take the kids on a “Church Tour” for a while now so C week provides the perfect opportunity! I really want to expose the kids to the different ways people see God and church life….which often shows in the structure of a building. We are planning on one of the larger Catholic Churches, a mega church, and a few others. We will be chatting about church plants & house church along the way and what church is really about…people worshiping and serving Jesus in unity. I’m super super excited for this. We are a part of a church plant that just finished building in January. We took the kids to visit the property every week, took pictures every week as it went up and prayer walked the surrounding neighborhoods with them serveral times. They feel such ownership in our church & I am so thankful for that. I pray that they see that the church is not about the size or place or look of a building through our little journey but about the people who choose to live out life together.

Other C things we will be doing…cloud shapes, cartwheel races, eating chinese food with chopsticks, and hosting a free car wash for our neighbors (if the kids are healthy, fingers crossed!!!). Our faith lesson will be about the Kindgom of Heaven…we will be building a castle and discussing how the place Jesus is building for us will differ from the churches we worship in on earth.

C Books from Home: Corduroy, Clone Wars early readers series, The Cat in the Hat, Charlie & Lola books, Clifford books, In the Castle by Anna Milbourne, 1 2 3 California by Puck, Cowboys by Catriona Clarke, Castles & Forts by Simon Adams, My Car by Byron Barton, The Sand Castle Contest by Robert Munsch, There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Shell by Lucille Colandro, John Deere’s Big Book of Construction Machines, and Magic Tree House: The Knight at Dawn #2

For D: the outing will be an early morning “Donuts with Dad” before work!! The boys cannot get enough of either ! We will be making dinosoars, having a dance party, taking a neighbors dog on a walk, and taking a road trip to Dallas to see several of their cousins on my side of the family!! Daniel will be doing the faith lesson during their donut time about lonliness…who/ what fills the “holes” in our lives.

D Books from Home: David Gets in Trouble by David Shannon, Dinothesaurus by Douglas Florian, Daddy’s Lullaby by Tony Bradman, Because Your Daddy Loves You by Andrew Clements, How Big Were the Dinosaurs? by Bernard Most, The Digging-est Dog by Al Perkins, The Lost Dinosaur Bone by Mercer Mayer, The Dinosaurs Series “How do Dinosaurs…” by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague, Magic Tree House #9: Dolphins at Daybreak

If we can just get through these fevers….I would prefer that F week does not include them….or the flies. Seriously.

The two questions that every mother of multiple children asks herself when one child starts throwing

The two questions that every mother of multiple children asks herself when one child starts throwing up are: “Who’s next?” and “When will it hit?” Those are what have been running through my mind every day for the last 12 days!!! I wish I could report that our first official week with our Alphabet Adventure was “A”mazing but it turned out to be the week of the plagues in our house!!! We are on day 13 of 3 sick kiddos!! Fever, vomit, chest colds, infections…you name it, they have had it. One by one, they are going down like flies!! And speaking of FLIES!!!! That would be the second plague!! After a horrid morning of bad news at dentist & dr’s offices we came home to fly’s everywhere. Turns out last month some happy little flies decided to lay eggs all over the window sills behind my couches and they HATCHED. It had to be the most annoying, disgusting 3 days EVER!! I promise I killed at least 300 of the suckers. So the flies + the vomit = crappy start to the summer fun. BOOOOO!!!

Somehow we managed to crank out our apple painting, airplane flying, aquarium visit, pigs in a blanket & blueberry smoothies. But our blueberry picking & beach going are a bust so far. Though the boys thought that killing all the bugs was definitely a fun event for “B”. I did pick up some rather wonderful books at the Library that I thought some of you would like to make note of for this or next summer. These are just our favorites…

ABC’s Books: Babar’s ABC’s by Laurent de Brunhoff, 3-D ABC: A Sculptural Alphabet by Bob Raczka, Brazil ABCs: A Book About the People and Places of Brazil by David Seidman, Who put the B in the Ballyhoo by Carlyn Beccia, A Treasury of Alphabets published by The Chicken House

A Books: Actual Size by Steve Jenkins, The Illustrated Book of Aesop’s Fables, Noah’s Ark by Jerry Pinkney

B Books: Berlioz the Bear by Jan Brett, Beau Beaver Goes to Town by Frances Bloxam, Franklin is Bossy by Paulette Bourgeois, The Bears in the Bed and the Great Big Storm by Paul Bright, My Brother by Anthony Browne, Book! Book! Book! by Deborah Bruss, Bootsie Barker Bites by Barbara Bottner

Enjoy!

Excuse my blogging vaca! Anyone else stoked about the SUMMER???!!!! I did shed a few tears today as Logan was hugging his precious preschool teachers, we have been SO blessed by them this year. And to think I have a kindergartener just blows my mind….

In honor of this fabulous last day of school & start to the summer…..Daniel (the hubbs) and I have been planning something super fun for our kids this summer! Any of you out there wondering what to do with your precious little ones? Inspired by a darling friend of mine, we are setting out on an “Alphabet Adventure!” Two letters a week and every letter has most of the following…. field trip, faith lesson, recipe, craft, and other fun family stuff. There are LOTS of low maintenance things, a few high maintenance things, lots of library trips, and lots and lots of fun planned. The kids know about the A-Z adventure but everything else will be a surprise. We told them last night and they are waiting on the edges of their seats to get started!! I love the brewing excitement, and I will admit, I love having a plan!! While we have lots of days to enjoy the slow pace of the summer months….the long nights over carefully created meals, the last-minute pool trips and such, I thrive on this kind of stuff!! I will list out several of the books we are using and share the first two letters. If there is interest then I will post the week before to share ideas for each weeks letters. I’m sure MANY of you have fun ideas to add to my growing pile and I would love to hear them! So….let the Fab Frazier Fun begin!

On Sunday morning we drove out to Harper’s Ferry, WV. We had been wanting to take Ryan there for a while because he would be able to run around and because it is really pretty and calm out there. Ryan had so much fun. He loved running and roaming all around, checking things out. We took a family hike, which at the time seemed like a good idea, but was probably not the best thing to do at 32 weeks pregnant. Ryan really seemed to take in his surroundings. I am sure that we will go back again in the future.

On Sunday we decided to go on a spur of the moment trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. We had a bit of time to kill since we were not able to get into the aquarium right when we got out there. We walked around the Inner Harbor for a couple of hours and had a wonderful lunch.

They do not allow strollers inside of the aquarium and it was unusually hot inside. Ryan did pretty well for the first 30ish minutes while riding in the Ergo carrier with Jeff. After that he got really hot and since it was his nap time by then he was really tired too. He was such a trooper though and did great. He loved the looking at all the different kinds of fish. He enjoyed pointing out different turtles to us. We walked by the sting ray area just as the scuba divers were feeding them. We tried to leave that area and Ryan kept saying and signing more so we let him watch a bit longer. We finished up the day with the dolphin show. Ryan didn’t want to sit in his seat so Jeff stayed with him up at the top of the auditorium. Ryan clapped for the dolphins every time the audience clapped. It was very cute.

The moment we retrieved our stroller and got Ryan buckled inside, he was asleep. An entire morning and early afternoon of running around Baltimore and the aquarium really tired him out.

Would have been the perfect pic if Jeff was looking up…

Yesterday we went to a local Truckin’ event for kids. They had pretty much every single kind of big truck you can imagine there for kids to climb on and play with. Ryan was fascinated by the bobcat and bulldozer that were constantly picking up dirt. He also spent a lot of time chasing after this police truck because they were the only ones with their lights and horns going. Ryan and his friends had fun talking to the firemen and checking out their cool fire truck!

It was a hot day and running around for around an hour really tuckered out my little man. He took the best afternoon nap of the entire week. Mommy also got to get a much needed nap in as well!

One of the things that Jeff and I always remember about the Outer Banks are the gigantic sand dunes. They are the largest sand dunes on the east coast. Anytime you drive by the sand dunes you can pretty much count on seeing lots of kites flying in the air. When we decided on going to the OBX, Jeff immediately told me that he wanted to take Ryan to fly a kite.

We went to a kite shop, Kitty Hawk Kites and found a suitable kite and then trekked up the gigantic sand dune. Seriously it looks like nothing but when you try to hike in blistering hot sand while wearing flip flops and carrying an insanely heavy diaper bag, (it was either the bag or Ryan and I chose the lighter of the two) it quickly becomes a difficult task. Once we reached the top of the sand dune we realized that we had no towel or blanket for Ryan to sit on and the sand was HOT! Jeff had Ryan sit in his lap and they flew Ryan’s train kite together. Ryan got the hang of it really quick and we had a great time!

This past week we traveled to the Outer Banks, NC for our first beach vacation since Ryan’s birth. We were really unsure of how Ryan would react to the beach so we went with no expectations. Ryan really seemed to love playing in the sand. He tried to eat it a few times but eventually decided that it didn’t taste too great. Ryan LOVED seashells. He was so happy any time that we found a nice big shell for him to tote around. We even came back with a few souvenir shells. Ryan was a little unsure of the water (maybe because it was very cold). He would not let go of us at all when we were around the waves but to his credit the waves were very big. Ryan also didn’t care much for walking in the sand. He preferred to be carried around which turned out to be quite a nice workout for Jeff and I. We know that Ryan will love the ocean as he gets a little older and in a few years we won’t be able to keep him away.

Yesterday we went to a local farm’s Strawberry Jubilee. We had never been there before so we had no idea what to expect. We had such a blast!! There were so many wonderful things for Ryan (and Jeff) to do.

We had lots of fun picking strawberries right off the vine as well. I had never done anything like that before so it was a new experience for me as well. Ryan liked squishing the strawberries and getting red juice everywhere. We had a great time and all came home tired.

Today we continued our alphabet adventures with the letter G. We decided to venture down the road to Great Falls. It is a hidden beauty here in VA. Ryan had a great time checking out the falls, walking around the trails and collecting rocks. We wished we would have thought to bring a blanket and toys to play with so we could have stayed longer. We actually didn’t plan on going there today but just kind of happened to go there so we didn’t plan too well. We still had a wonderful time and look forward to going back!!

P is for Park. We have been to lots of parks, but this one is tons of fun!!! Jeff and I heard about this park through some of the moms in my Mom’s Group. It is a good drive to get to but SO worth it! This park even has a carousel. Ryan got to ride on a horsey for the first time and he seemed to really like it.

We arrived at the park very close to Ryan’s nap time. I am really looking forward to taking Ryan to this park many many more times….just not right before a nap.

Saturday we were all geared up for an outdoor activity when a few afternoon showers popped up. We decided to go with an indoor activity instead. The Udvar-Hazy Museum is loaded with airplanes and they are expanding! Ryan was much more interested in the planes outside near the airport rather than those suspended from the ceiling inside the museum.

We fed Ryan his lunch on a park bench outside of the museum. Lucky for us, we were in the flight path of all the planes taking off from the airport. Each time a plane would take off Ryan would stand up and point at it. Ryan would show us the plane and do his best to say plane until it was out of sight.

Ryan really seemed to enjoy it. He was more interested in the hot dog and playing than he was in the actual baseball though. We purchased tickets directly behind home plate but after one and a half innings decided that a grassy hill would be a better place to sit. Ryan did not want to sit still, he wanted to explore!

We had a great time and are looking forward to going to many more baseball games in the future! Ryan was happy through 6 full innings and then we decided to hit the road before he got fussy and tired.

On St. Patty’s day we loaded up some of the family and headed to the Ft. Worth Zoo. Little did we realize that most of the schools in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area were out on spring break that week. The Ft. Worth Zoo is a major attraction and since the weather was very nice it should have come as no surprise that the zoo was packed! It was very difficult to get around but that did not seem to phase Ryan at all. He loved watching the monkeys swing around and got to experience his first carousel ride. Maybe next time we will actually ride on the horse on the carousel.

Since today was such a beautiful day we decided to head down to a local farm. They had a few animals that recently had babies! Jeff and I know that as Ryan grows he will enjoy the farm even more. Ryan seemed fascinated with the sheep. He also really enjoyed checking out the cows. In another month there will be piglets out running around at the farm. We had so much fun today!!
