And this was a bit of a historic event, because it was my 10th lifetime trip to Walt Disney World (assuming you don’t count last January when I went to Downtown Disney for a few hours, which I don’t). Why Jenn, you say, aren’t you tired of it by now? To which I reply: WHY AM I NOT THERE RIGHT NOW?!?! I just collapsed over my keyboard sobbing. Way to go.

Let’s relive it through some of my musical WDW experiences while I attempt to stem this tide of bitter tears, shall we?

As always, I tweeted about the trip as I went along. The hashtag was #baroquewdw, but I won’t bother linking it because Twitter will deny you. I’m afraid you’ll have to dig back through my Twitter feed if you want to find them. Oh, and to see larger versions of the below photos and some bonus photos not included in this post, check out the latest AB Facebook album.

Lunch our first day was at the Biergarten in Epcot’s Germany pavilion. It is, as you might have guessed, an Oktoberfest-type joint, with a buffet that offers such Teutonic fare as schnitzel, spaetzel, Bavarian cheesecake, and ALL the sausage. And of course there’s beer.

Oops, that’s not musical; how did that get in there? (WHY AM I NOT IN EPCOT RIGHT NOW, DRINKING GERMAN BEER?!?!)

I’ll tell you what is musical: a traditional German oompah band! Yes!

Consisting of three guys, one of whom had such a deep, authentically-accented voice we wondered if he was putting it on — but he was not the tuba player. Ah well. So much for “you are what you play.”

This guy played bells! And a glockenspiel!

And these guys played the alphorn!  (Found that link by searching “Ricola horn.” I’m such a philistine.) And it actually sounded quite beautiful — very mellow, maybe even a little mournful. I was extra impressed by the fact that the alphorn has no keys, and they elicited all the notes by the changes of their lips alone.

This super awesome guy in the Animal Kingdom assembled a bunch of guests around him to play the drums while he rocked out on the marimba.

At Raglan Road, an Irish pub in Downtown Disney, this legit pair of Irishmen played Celtic music on an impressive variety of instruments which they switched among themselves — drum, recorder, guitar.

Funny story — my fellow traveler Scott and I were sitting at a table to the side, and the musicians kept glancing over at us. Then for some reason they dedicated a song to us. It was “Only Our Rivers Run Free.” Thanks…?

Here’s a better look at the musicians’ loft at the Grand Floridian, and with actual musicians in it this time.

Off Kilter! They play in the Canada pavilion and I <3 them. The guy partially obstructed by the pole on the right has a very nice voice. They like to end with the guy in the middle singing “Taking Care of Business,” though, which doesn’t strike me as particularly Celtic OR Canadian.

Taiko drummers! They are called Matsuriza, which means “festival of drums.” Or drumming. Something like that. I took a ton of pictures of them, largely because the guy on the left was hilariously expressive.

Behold the JAMMitors in Epcot. They are exactly what the name implies.

Once their indoor 'competition' performance is over, singers relax by striking up harmonies outdoors

Yesterday my sister and I listened to Swiss mountain music almost continuously from 9.46am to 4am. Yes, more than 18 hours of “jo-lo-lu-lu-uuu”. In a concert hall, in a church, in a sports centre; on a street corner, in a cafe, at a sausage stall; at a bar, beneath a tree, on a meadow. It was heaven.

Let me explain – briefly, because in the next few days more will be revealed in posts, pictures and in a little film Teresa and I have made (once I have discovered how to download and stitch together the clips taken with my new movie camera).

A few voices begin, strangers join in, and soon it's a yodel-jam

We were in Interlaken, in the Bernese Oberland, for the Swiss national Jodlerfest (16-19 June), where 11,000 yodellers, alphorn players and flag-wavers flocked, having qualified last year to perform there. A crowd of 200,000 awaited them over the four days, as did 140 judges, who gave them marks music-exam-style rather than in a ‘who-beat-who’ competition. The festival takes place every three years: recent past hosts include Luzern and Frauenfeld.

Throughout Friday evening and from 9am to 9pm on Saturday, 14 venues came alive with the sounds of the mountains, with an act every eight minutes – as did 18 Bierfest-style marquees, some of which had live bands till 5.30am.

Interlaken’s cafes and bars, too, rang with sing-songs, as did its very streets. All day and all night long hundreds – probably thousands – of impromptu vocal jam sessions filled the Festgelaende (festival meadow). Even this morning at 6.45am, as Teresa and I walked to the station en route back to England, a group of four young people passed us yodelling softly in harmony.

Unless you followed a link I posted on my blog of 10 June, I bet most of you have never heard an authentic yodel (and no, The Sound of Music definitely does not count).

This is a mother and daughter, accompanied by the son. The backdrop has been imposed by the way – in the auditorium it was a black curtain. Soundnya tidak lah buruk, tapi mengingat harganya cukup mahal, tentulah ekspektasi saya akan performa headphone ini lebih tinggi.

Apabila fashion adalah concern utama bagi anda, headphone ini salah satu pilihan yang tepat. Apalagi bagi anda yang ingin tampak memukau di kerumunan remaja dinamis dalam mall outdoor ibukota, headphone ini sangat disarankan, cukup kenakan tanpa didengarkan.

I really enjoy getting the opportunity to entertain at functions where the people want to have fun. Whether it’s one of the large festivals I get to, or an intimate party at a home or club- it’s a fun challenge to mold the proceedings so that everyone get’s their intended good time.

In the case of this party, Will was a great sport—from the roasts (and his responses)- to his jam with us on accordion, his alphorn duel with me and his new experience as a boombadier… the guests danced and listened while the Yobster and I made some music….

Another day, back on the road- home for a bit…. Things are staying busy here with my family and getting set up in my studio before the summer tour season… Preliminary dates will be announced very soon. Stay tuned to the website -www.alexmeixner.com- for updates!

Amidst the normal stuff this week, I had a nice little, last minute house party gig on Saturday in Clearwater, FL. Some people that I met at the Accordion Festival in Holiday had me come over to play for an International themed party. Some people came decked out in traditional attires (including the host in a full Polish folk outfit) and others just came to enjoy a great evening of friendship and fellowship- as well as great food provided by the Pierogi Grill from Clearwater.

I really enjoy these types of gigs… I just played acoustic accordion and sang a bunch of requests. A makeshift dance floor developed in the living room and everyone had a good time. The alphorn contest was a bit of a challenge, as I think we were sorta in 3 rooms at one time- but that added to the atmosphere! Anyway—it was a real pleasant time and really epitomizes how much I enjoy my work… Whether on large festival stages, cool clubs or people’s living rooms, music communicates with people in a way that lets them enjoy life more… Good stuff…

Then there’s Eliana Burki, who has adapted the 3.5 meter long alphorn (which originated in northern Asia and was used by shepherds to communicate in the alps) for her jazz performances.

Electric harpist Andreas Vollenweider is probably the best known contemporary Swiss musician. In the 80’s, two of his world/new age music albums were Billboard’s no. 1 for 11 weeks.  At 53, he still produces albums and performs worldwide.

There’s even a fascinating new age Swiss instrument, the Hang, invented by PanArt in Bern in 2000 and highly prized by drummers around the world for its unique musicality.

But perhaps Switzerland is more respected for hosting than producing great music. Each year, week-long events like the Montreux Jazz festival, Nyon Paleo Rock festival, and Lucerne Classical Music festival pull in world famous artists and tens of thousands of visitors from around the world.

Wow so long ago did I listen to this song….just can’t believe I found it, and on video too.  I guess some of you would think I am so old and wow she listens to this but for me it is wonderful keep sake.  Feels so like home listening to Pepe Lienhard.  My heart is smiling just to hear it and remembering that time.  My Childhood.  It was so nice

Ps. I do enjoy a lot of the new music artist just ask my family they would tell you……but my kids would say “Mom what are you listening to?” …….. No problem I love it!!!  My years growing up in Switzerland and I am proud of it.   Have fun listening to it and don’t forget to smile.

 Wow, vor so langer Zeit habe ich dieses Lied gehoert. …. kann es fast nicht glauben dass ich es gefunden  hab, und auch noch auf Video. Einige von Euch denken sicher die ist so alt und hört so etwas an. Doch für mich ist es wunderbar das Lied wieder einmal zuhoeren.. Fühlt sich so wie zu Hause an den Pepe Lienhard zu hören.  Mein Herz lacht nur, all die Erinnerungen. Meine Kindheit, es war so schön und Einfach.
 PS. Ich genießen viele der neuen Musik Künstler fraget nur meine Familie, sie würden sagen: “Mutt, was hörst du den an?” …….. Kein Problem, ich liebe es! Meine Jahre, aufgewachsen in der Schweiz und bin stolz darauf. Viel Spaß beim hören und vergiss nicht zu Lachen….das darf man immer.

The Swiss Consulate in Bangalore recently brought together an unlikely quartet for a fusion performance.

I could not attend this but my nephews assure me that the Alphorn is not a single-note instrument. A recording I heard afterwards actually sounds like a sax!

Boogie Time!

On Friday afternoon, we explored the town and went to the small picnic-like event going on to celebrate the beginning of the 7th annual International Alphorn Festival.  It wasn’t very big and the hotel told us that the main events are on Saturday (the actual competition) and Sunday (the big festival). Nendaz is known as “The Bisses Country” because it has 8 bisses that run through the area with nice walking or hiking paths alongside them.  After dinner, we walked to the bisse closest to our hotel, The Middle Bisse, and went for a short walk and enjoyed the nature and wonderful weather.

On Saturday, we took the ski lift up into the mountains and hiked along the Bisse of Cherve.  It was an absolutely gorgeous day.

We only planned on hiking for a couple of hours but it ended up being for most of the day.  We made it back to Nendaz in time for the festival parade which was full of traditional Swiss things. It was actually the first time I’ve seen a St. Bernard in Switzerland!

On Sunday, we took the cablecar up to Tracouet, which has an altitude of 2,200 meters (7,200 feet), for the big festival. There was a small lake up there which was gorgeous with the mountains in the background. I really enjoyed the Alphorn players. They are really talented. We were able to watch the Concert of 100 players which was neat to see.

All in all, It was a great weekend!

Die Schweizer haben einen langen Atem. Immer schon steht ihr Botschaftsgebäude im Zentrum Berlins, lange Jahre war es dort sogar ganz allein auf weiter Flur. Aber sie haben nicht aufgegeben und haben gewartet, bis die Bundesrepublik ihren Regierungssitz um sie herum baute. Dann ließen sie ihre Landschaftsarchitekten Wettbewerbe gewinnen und um ihre Botschaft herum wunderschöne Gärten anlegen. Und damit sie auch gut zu Fuß zum Hauptbahnhof kommen – denn sie sind ja trotz Autofahrerpartei die Weltmeister im Bahnfahren – ließen sie noch einen Architekten kommen und die Gustav-Heinemann-Brücke bauen. In das Herz der Berliner lassen sie sich durch ein Volksfest und vor allem ein großes Feuerwerk an ihrem Nationalfeiertag schließen.

Auch akustisch sind sie jetzt präsent, zumindest für ein paar Monate. Denn unter der Gustav-Heinemann-Brücke ist seit der Fußball-EM 2008 eine Klanginstallation angebracht, die mit schweizerischen Klängen ein wenig Alpenidyll an die Spree bringt. Hier zwitschern Vögel, bimmeln Kuhglocken, quaken Frösche, läuten Kirchenglocken, jodeln Senner, ertönt das Alphorn, schnaufen Dampflokomotiven, scheppern mehrsprachige Ansagen durch den Zürcher Bahnhof und bedankt sich die Stewardess durch die Bordlautsprecher näselnd dafür, dass wir den Fughafen Zürich nutzen. Ich find’s toll, wenn die ungewohnten Geräusche beim wochenendlichen Jogging an mein Ohr dringen.

Die schweizerischen Klänge kann man noch bis Oktober 2008 täglich von 8-20 Uhr hören.
