alsamixer

Aparecerá algo parecido a esto:

Two handy scripts fixes this, which can be assigned to a keyboard shortcut in Openbox or your preferred WM/DE.

#!/bin/sh
amixer set Mic 80% mute > /dev/null
#!/bin/sh
amixer set Mic 80% unmute > /dev/null

You may of course choose any other control you want – ie PCM:

I just (well, a few weeks ago) installed an instance of Kubuntu on a Dell Studio 17 (the host OS is Vista Home Premium 64-bit) and the volume went from low, after the initial installation, to non-existent after rebooting. Was it possible that the volume on Amarok was down? Nope, it was at 100%. Was the volume setting located in the task bar set to mute? No again. Was the Mixer at fault? No.

After trolling the web and finding many possible reasons for the sudden onset of muteness (bad drivers, conflicting installations of software) I found a simple check that proved to be the most telling: I ran the command line alsamixer and made sure the volume is up!

This is what I saw after I opened a Konsole terminal window and typed
alsamixer
:

Notice the lack of color on the third bar; the one labelled PCM. After moving the cursor to the PCM column and pressing the up arrow a few dozen times the bar was nicely multi-colored. This is what the
alsamixer
levels looked like (notice the PCM is up) after my tinkering:

I pressed Esc to exit
alsamixer
and ran the following to save the settings:

sudo alsactl store

The cat was alive.

This post is not about how to configure sound card. This post is for the situation that your sound c

This post is not about how to configure sound card. This post is for the situation that your sound card driver was correctly installed and you heard the sound in ubuntu box but one reason or the other you can’t hear any sound in ubuntu.

This situation means that you still have your sound card (or onboard sound) correctly installed but one reason or the other, the sound is gone.

Possible reasons and solutions are,

Check whether volume is muted: this can be happen when your keyboard has mute button and you accidentally hit the button.

Open gnome terminal and run the command alsamixer. The terminal should show something like below. Check the master volume is large enough. You can volume up by up arrow key and after that you can exit by hitting Esc key.

Open gnone volume control by right clicking volume icon in the system tray and then click ‘Open Volume Control.’ And then check whether PCM panel is muted or set to zero like the image below. PCM is correspondent to PC speaker. If the volume is set to zero, obviously you won’t get any sound from your speaker. Set the volume high enough to hear. You can do that by clicking the slide bar and drag it to the level you want.

Hopefully, if your sound card driver was installed correctly, one of the above solution will get your ubuntu sound back.

No console, digite o comando

alsamixer

raffaele@raffaele-laptop:~$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory
raffaele@raffaele-laptop:~$

sudo aptitude install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

Adesso tutto funge a dovere.

Mein kleiner Linux Merkzettel

linux-ff6y:~ # cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp

Abbruch z.B. mit -c

Heute: Staer des Alsamixers unter der Konsole:

linux-ff6y:~ # alsamixer

Heute: Soundkonfigurationsdatei bearbeiten (mit dem Editor joe)

linux-ff6y:~ # joe /etc/modprobe.d/sound

options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=6stack-digout

# dtXw.mX9s0UciqM6:VIA High Definition Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

Heute: Alsa konfigurieren:

linux-ff6y:~ # alsaconf

Heute: Ausgabe einiger Daten ueber die Soundkonfiguration:

linux-ff6y:~ # artsd -l 0

Erzeugt z.B. folgende Ausgabe:

artsd version is 1.5.7

You can use several applications to adjust the volume. Try alsamixer, a command-line mixer for alsa

You can use several applications to adjust the volume. Try alsamixer, a command-line mixer for alsa which comes with ubuntu (part of alsa-utils), or one of the many frontends for it: alsamixergui; qamix, a Qt front-end for alsamixer; gamix, a Gtk front-end; or (if you can tolerate gnome dependencies) gnome-alsamixer. You can also use xfce4-mixer, though it loads xfce-mcs-manager which might interfere with your gtk settings if you use another method to apply these. You can use all of these to control the volume, 3D switches, the volume of CD audio, line-in, headphones, phone, etc.

There are also several dockapps available to adjust the volume. Have a look here.

Several panels also have plugins to adjust the volume: this is the case for the lxpanel, perlpanel, xfce4-panel (using xfce4-mixer), gnome-panel, and kicker.

While all these applications may be useful, it is generally easier to change the volume by pressing a single key or a combination of keys on your keyboard. How can you accomplish this in Openbox?

The following commands turn the volume up and down:

Up: amixer -q set PCM 1+ unmute

Down: amixer -q set PCM 1- unmute

To toggle mute, use the following command:

amixer -q set PCM toggle

If you’d rather change the master volume (as opposed to the PCM), use the following commands:

Up: amixer -q set Master 1+ unmute

Down: amixer -q set Master 1- unmute

Mute: amixer -q set Master toggle

To make these commands more convenient, assign keyboard bindings to them in the rc.xml file. I use Ctrl+Up, Ctrl+Down, and Ctrl+Alt+End to turn the volume up, down and on/off. If you are more of a mouse person, you could also use a dockapp with launchers and assing the above commands to some launchers.

If you like an on-screen display when you change the volume, you can use OSDsh, a small application that shows the volume levels of your soundcard whenever they change. It is in the Ubuntu repositories.

In order to use OSDsh, you have to run it in the background. Install the application (duh!), and add the following lines to your autostart file (~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh):

	osdsh &
	(sleep 1 && osdctl -m 1) &

You can use themes to adjust the looks of OSDsh. To create your own themes, use the command “osdshconfig“. Themes allow you to change the colours, position, fonts, shadow offset, outline width and the delay of the on-screen-display. To apply them, use the following command in your autostart file, after “osdsh &”:

	osdctl -S /path/to/your/theme/file
