Got a special place in your heart for Atari computing? Now you can quench that need using new hardware. The Suska project has achieved complete hardware emulation of the Atari ST using an FPGA. The project’s progress tracker shows implementation of the major chips at 100%. They are running EmuTOS, an Atari emulator, as the operating system because running the original would violate copyright. The chip used is an Altera Cyclone III. You could load up the code on your own hardware but judging from the number of connections needed it might be less of a headache to buy a board from these guys.

Terasic has a great little add on card to bring out the pins in the HSMC header found on many of Altera’s new development boards (e.g. the Cyclone III Starter Board) to be compatible with the old Santa Cruz standard. It also gives the user a bit of EEPROM, an SD card interface, a MICTOR connector, and USB (host or client). Unfortunately, they just provide you with a PDF document. The documentation shows it being used with the Cyclone III starter kit specifically; so why don’t they provide a settings file or TCL script for the pin assignments?

Going one-by-one making pin assignments on an FPGA is not my idea of fun or a good use of my time. So why don’t any daughter cards come with TCL scripts to set pin assignments for a few (maybe 2 or 3) common dev boards? Do you think that is unreasonable?

Well, if you can use it, here is a TCL script for setting the pin assignments in a project using the Cyclone III Starter Kit and the Terasic HSMC-to-SC Daughter Card.  There is a switch that should be set in the file depending on if you want the USB pins or not.

“You’re impossible!” complained the elf. She leaned over as to reach a hand out to his face.

“Hey love birds!” taunted the human in the crow’s nest. “Either quit bickering or I’ll make you kiss and make up!”

“Oh you will, will you?” challenged the elf. The woman rappelled down the mast to land among the trio.

“Yeah I will, so shut-up and lets enjoy what we have,” replied Lyn.

“Which is?” inquired Credance of his companion.

“Each other of course you old ghost!” scolded the woman as if it was obvious to a blind man.

“Old!?” cried Credance in mock horror. “I am not old! In fact I’m not much older than you!”

“Will you two cut it out!” yelled the reaper. Both Lyn and Credance hung their heads in shame as Loziras swung his gaze onto them. He returned his empty eye-sockets to the small flotilla which dotted the waves. “Look at this; this is all that remains of the Templar. This is all that remains of a free Ulric. Look what has befallen us.”

“You need to loosen up Loziras,” sighed the elf. “We have been over this a thousand times. There is nothing, and I mean nothing you could’ve accomplished by staying behind! Look how many you saved!” By this point she was pleading with him. The reaper turned away from her, unable to answer her. The elf grabbed his shoulder and turned him back around, but he merely pulled the hood of the cloak lower on his face. “Loziras you will look at me!” commanded the elf, reaching for the hem of the hood.

“Môràh,” hissed the reaver as he grabbed her arm. “I’m not sure this is a good idea.”

[Jeri Ellsworth] is building her own pinball machine. Her build log is delivered in the form of daily videos that walk through the progress. In addition to seeing the intricate ramps, traps, and controllers she outlines her build techniques. These include reproducing parts based on old pinball machines and bending acrylic with a custom tool or a toaster oven.

The driver she’s planning to use is an Altera FPGA with a bunch of FETs to control the heavy-load components. There’s not a ton of info on the actual electronics but we had a heck of a fun time looking at the creative field components. Our favorite by far is the television from Day 7. The screen is translucent with a rear projected image. When the ramp in front of it is raised the pinball can be jumped right through the screen!

Download quartus II and Modelsim from Quartus  website. Once you have downloaded the tar balls of Quartus and Modelsim, extract them somewhere. Move into quartus directory where you have extracted and type,

chmod 777 *

./install

When it asks where to install, Use the default option(/opt/altera9.1/). Then move into modelsim directory and type,

chmod 777 *

./install_st

Here also keep the installation directory default(/opt/altera9.1/). Now your tools are installed. You have to setup some environment variables. Open .bashrc in your home directory using your favourite test editor and append the following,

export PATH=$PATH:/opt/altera9.1/quartus/bin
export PATH=$PATH:/opt/altera9.1/modelsim_ase/linuxaloem/

Save it and restart your terminal. Type quartus or vsim to launch corresponding application. Now launch quartus and click the menu, View->Utility Windows->TCL Console. In the console copy and paste the following,

set_user_option -name EDA_TOOL_PATH_MODELSIM_ALTERA /opt/altera9.1/modelsim_ase/linuxaloem/

Its done. Next time, When you are creating new project, use Modelsim-altera as simulator.

(Note: For Fedora/RedHat users. When you try to run Quartus in these distros you will get few errors relating seLinux and Text relocation. To overcome it use,

su -

cd /opt/altera9.1/quartus/linux/

chcon -t textrel_shlib_t * -R

This should solve the problem).

Altera’s latest version of Quartus II now enables users to implement the economy version of the Nios II processor without charge. That’s a great way for Altera to bring new customers to the Nios.  Let users learn and implement a design, then when (or if) they need added performance for a design they will likely just shell out the license fee. From then, it would be doubtful that they ever went back to the lower performing brother of the Nios family.

When you step back though, you realize that the standard and fast versions are serious RISC implementations while the economy version is not much better than processors we made in digital design courses in undergrad. (Of course, we didn’t have free compilers and debug tools to accompany them!)  Without hardware multiply (or divide) and 0.15 DMIPs per MHz, it seems unlikely that the economy processor would be used by anyone doing anything more than orchestrating the components on the Avalon bus. However, with Altera leaving support for custom instructions intact, this announcement may leave dangerous room for people looking to save money in these cost-conscious times.

Arrow and Altera have teamed up to deliver a cleverly-easy-to-use low-cost dev board. Just plug it into your USB port and the built-in programmer for the Cyclone III FPGA allows you instantly begin prototyping your designs.

This seems like a great idea, hopefully this is well executed. We will have to wait to see the spec sheets, but the 80-pin PCB edge connector seems like an excellent way to provide the user with expansion capabilities while minimizing bulk, cost, and trace lengths.

I’ve been playing around with FPGA’s, and using Xlinx Spartan 3 from Digilent, I mainly wanted it for the Sump Logic Analyser, but now branching out with it a bit, lets ignore the nightmare install that ISE Webpack is, then the fact that Digilent boards don’t work with the ISE programming tools and focus on the rest of the oddness..

First off VITAL, this is a library that ought to be in the IEEE lib’s, but for some reason ( possibly being a cut down version of the software,  but if so wouldn’t it be nice if it said so ) . I managed to get this up and running by installing some software that had a VITAL2000 source code ( vhd’s) and adding them to my project as a new library, changed the USE and LIBRARY options to use VITAL2000 and VITAL_timing_2000 ( the lib i have appends _2000 to all of them ) , then its a case of marking some of the functions IMPURE, they’re just warnings so not really needed. XIinx’s website is no good, and their support forum didn’t turn up anything either.

I even switched to Altera Quartus at one point, but that had similar issues, seems they only have VITAL95 support, and I ran into other issues with it too.

After that the FMF library needs to be updated to use the new LIBRARY and USE settings… So i finally get to the point where the FMF library compiles, the VITAL2000 compiles, and off it goes to compile the model I’m using, brrp! nope, some mysterious error about ‘Port being unsupported in  a Block concurrent statement’  over on the FMF site someone’s noted it from an old build and the admin is wondering if ISE WebPack is indeed a crippled version.

updated: uhh i guess you can’t use any of the FMF models for anything but simulation, or vital.. these are good things to learn early on its a core difference with software dev and fpga development!

As much used to cross development toolsets and so on, the FPGA has been the most difficult and painful route I’ve ever taken, and I’ve worked on some bizarre stuff, the programming itself is easy enough but the dev tools and support are horrible, I guess you just get spoiled by Microsoft’s level of  devtool’s and support.

Anyway my ‘allotment’ for FPGA time is up for today, so I figured jot down a note that i can fill in later., and hoping that the FMF admin will have a solution..

The only trouble so far is that the drivers don’t want to cooperate with Windows 7. I’ve been too lazy to get the huge Altera installers on my VirtualBox partition though (and they are gigabyte files, absolutely enormous).

I think the idea of system of a chip is going places, but the few times I’ve played with the concept it’s been something of a letdown, especially for simple FPGA systems. I just want to cycle through some tests, is that so hard?

If I get a connector for this thing, I might start doing some interesting hardware hacking. Hack-a-day, here I come!

Fred’s Answer: Yes, first a Popular Success with around 2,000 – 2,500 people reading it everyday and a Top at 3,000 August 15, Makes me feel proud of my work! 122,000 readers (including 60,000 in August!!) since I began on WordPress in 2008, one year ago.

Q: What about your Flag Year in progress?

A: It’s a New Rhythm for me. Less Web, More Studies (screenwriting, traveling, songwriting and acting work on the sets). We live connected to this PLANET INTERNET that decides of a lot of things, some kind of fame, networking with friends and special events that you cannot live on Earth. But on Planet Earth, you have the time to choose what you’re doing.

Q: So your decisions, they need explanations?

A: Yes and no. Politically speaking, I’m a Republican, member of the Reagan Library and Foundation since 2005 and I support Barack Obama who is for me a new Ronald Reagan, even if he is Democrat. My ambition is one day to be candidate for the Presidency (I think every American could have this ambition, it’s good for the Country). Patriotism, projects to be elected…

Q: But you were not born in the US?

A: Correct. My mother was French and I don’t want anymore this second Country to be in my career’s projects. Moreover, I stop being binational because I am feeling AMERICAN ONLY and I don’t understand the Old Continent anymore (but in a second time, I will work to feel more interested). For the Presidential Election, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed a Reform, so I hope that it will be Amendment to help the people hope better: Everybody can dream about the White House as the achievement of a Public Life Time (even if not born American). Because of the Crisis, I AM A POTENTIAL CANDIDATE for 2012, I think everybody could think about it, let’s work to express and diffuse Opinions, Ideas, Projects To protect and develop our Land Of The Free, United States Only!

I think it explains my success on the Blog and in The Volume 3 (HOLLYWOOD CITY), I imagine a new Profile for our Movie Industry (in the United States) and a lot more, with Poetry and Images. So TIME FRAMES is for me the New Name that Hollywood deserves, all about the TIME that we never lost by shooting or watching a Movie and all about the FRAMES of our Imagination and the ones of our Inspiration. As a matter of fact, this is the name I chose for my LLC, previously FRENCH COP LLC, a LLC is like a Galaxy and my screenplays are the stars of this one.
