Altera’s latest version of Quartus II now enables users to implement the economy version of the Nios II processor without charge. That’s a great way for Altera to bring new customers to the Nios.  Let users learn and implement a design, then when (or if) they need added performance for a design they will likely just shell out the license fee. From then, it would be doubtful that they ever went back to the lower performing brother of the Nios family.

When you step back though, you realize that the standard and fast versions are serious RISC implementations while the economy version is not much better than processors we made in digital design courses in undergrad. (Of course, we didn’t have free compilers and debug tools to accompany them!)  Without hardware multiply (or divide) and 0.15 DMIPs per MHz, it seems unlikely that the economy processor would be used by anyone doing anything more than orchestrating the components on the Avalon bus. However, with Altera leaving support for custom instructions intact, this announcement may leave dangerous room for people looking to save money in these cost-conscious times.

Arrow and Altera have teamed up to deliver a cleverly-easy-to-use low-cost dev board. Just plug it into your USB port and the built-in programmer for the Cyclone III FPGA allows you instantly begin prototyping your designs.

This seems like a great idea, hopefully this is well executed. We will have to wait to see the spec sheets, but the 80-pin PCB edge connector seems like an excellent way to provide the user with expansion capabilities while minimizing bulk, cost, and trace lengths.

I’ve been playing around with FPGA’s, and using Xlinx Spartan 3 from Digilent, I mainly wanted it for the Sump Logic Analyser, but now branching out with it a bit, lets ignore the nightmare install that ISE Webpack is, then the fact that Digilent boards don’t work with the ISE programming tools and focus on the rest of the oddness..

First off VITAL, this is a library that ought to be in the IEEE lib’s, but for some reason ( possibly being a cut down version of the software,  but if so wouldn’t it be nice if it said so ) . I managed to get this up and running by installing some software that had a VITAL2000 source code ( vhd’s) and adding them to my project as a new library, changed the USE and LIBRARY options to use VITAL2000 and VITAL_timing_2000 ( the lib i have appends _2000 to all of them ) , then its a case of marking some of the functions IMPURE, they’re just warnings so not really needed. XIinx’s website is no good, and their support forum didn’t turn up anything either.

I even switched to Altera Quartus at one point, but that had similar issues, seems they only have VITAL95 support, and I ran into other issues with it too.

After that the FMF library needs to be updated to use the new LIBRARY and USE settings… So i finally get to the point where the FMF library compiles, the VITAL2000 compiles, and off it goes to compile the model I’m using, brrp! nope, some mysterious error about ‘Port being unsupported in  a Block concurrent statement’  over on the FMF site someone’s noted it from an old build and the admin is wondering if ISE WebPack is indeed a crippled version.

As much used to cross development toolsets and so on, the FPGA has been the most difficult and painful route I’ve ever taken, and I’ve worked on some bizarre stuff, the programming itself is easy enough but the dev tools and support are horrible, I guess you just get spoiled by Microsoft’s level of  devtool’s and support.

Anyway my ‘allotment’ for FPGA time is up for today, so I figured jot down a note that i can fill in later., and hoping that the FMF admin will have a solution..

The only trouble so far is that the drivers don’t want to cooperate with Windows 7. I’ve been too lazy to get the huge Altera installers on my VirtualBox partition though (and they are gigabyte files, absolutely enormous).

I think the idea of system of a chip is going places, but the few times I’ve played with the concept it’s been something of a letdown, especially for simple FPGA systems. I just want to cycle through some tests, is that so hard?

If I get a connector for this thing, I might start doing some interesting hardware hacking. Hack-a-day, here I come!

Blog’s Question: So Mike, A Lot New with This Blog and Your News?

Fred’s Answer: Yes, first a Popular Success with around 2,000 – 2,500 people reading it everyday and a Top at 3,000 August 15, Makes me feel proud of my work! 122,000 readers (including 60,000 in August!!) since I began on WordPress in 2008, one year ago.

Q: What about your Flag Year in progress?

A: It’s a New Rhythm for me. Less Web, More Studies (screenwriting, traveling, songwriting and acting work on the sets). We live connected to this PLANET INTERNET that decides of a lot of things, some kind of fame, networking with friends and special events that you cannot live on Earth. But on Planet Earth, you have the time to choose what you’re doing.

Q: So your decisions, they need explanations?

A: Yes and no. Politically speaking, I’m a Republican, member of the Reagan Library and Foundation since 2005 and I support Barack Obama who is for me a new Ronald Reagan, even if he is Democrat. My ambition is one day to be candidate for the Presidency (I think every American could have this ambition, it’s good for the Country). Patriotism, projects to be elected…

Q: But you were not born in the US?

A: Correct. My mother was French and I don’t want anymore this second Country to be in my career’s projects. Moreover, I stop being binational because I am feeling AMERICAN ONLY and I don’t understand the Old Continent anymore (but in a second time, I will work to feel more interested). For the Presidential Election, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed a Reform, so I hope that it will be Amendment to help the people hope better: Everybody can dream about the White House as the achievement of a Public Life Time (even if not born American). Because of the Crisis, I AM A POTENTIAL CANDIDATE for 2012, I think everybody could think about it, let’s work to express and diffuse Opinions, Ideas, Projects To protect and develop our Land Of The Free, United States Only!

Q: Regarding The Show Business, you Changed the Name of Hollywood?!

A: It’s a long story, a Novelist Vision. You know that I wrote a first dozen of Episodes of the Epic (film-novel) THE MAN WITH THE VELVET EYES. I think it explains my success on the Blog and in The Volume 3 (HOLLYWOOD CITY), I imagine a new Profile for our Movie Industry (in the United States) and a lot more, with Poetry and Images. So TIME FRAMES is for me the New Name that Hollywood deserves, all about the TIME that we never lost by shooting or watching a Movie and all about the FRAMES of our Imagination and the ones of our Inspiration. As a matter of fact, this is the name I chose for my LLC, previously FRENCH COP LLC, a LLC is like a Galaxy and my screenplays are the stars of this one.

A: Sure. I like Tom Cruise. I began my career with his wife on the set of FIRST DAUGHTER in 03 and Katie is a marvelous woman and actress that gave me the direction: SUCCEED. So Scientology, I was there, at The Celebrity Center, in 2006 when I relocated in Hollywoodland, and I’ll be back This Morning for a Second Touch and more studies, it’s a goal of my Flag Year: to know more about Life and all around. MOVIE POWER CORP will be the success of this new Deal about an industry that is now Sick of the Crisis, exhausted by so many fights to get an audience without the possibility to recover before 2010. I am deciding today to create a CONSORTIUM between the 2 Companies in order to regulate the Market that we can organize for our Movies and the Movies of the Others. This consortium will begin its activities in September for the relaunch of The Time Frames-Hollywood business and involvement in the film process.

I am inspired by the idea to work soon with Tom Cruise, more than a great actor the living dream of our Nation and I will join The Scientology to share his Religion in  the next few days in Los Angeles with my certitude that Ron Hubbard is a great novelist and a visionary of Science Fiction and the Founder of this Community. Nevertheless, I am sad to know that THE GERMAN SPY, a great story for the screen written by me is not in your Theater, replaced by a Tarantino copy that is not good. I feel also surprised by a movie that appears to be inspired by me as an actor, the title is not important.

I am proposing to the Film industry, located in Los Angeles and elsewhere to participate in my BRAIN TRUST to identify the conditions, the rules and the means of the production of The German Spy. This Feature Film is a creation that has the qualities of a Masterpiece if we can shoot it in town with a little bit of motivation and tenderness for the quality of its screenplay and cast to put together with the passion we have.

Politically speaking, I am now deciding to have a 6 months break, focusing on my support for The President Obama and his administration that is not a Republican like I am but a Truly sincere President of our Country in a period of time that is the most historic event of the Nation since the creation of it: to finish the Crisis and begin a New Era: Love On Earth. In Kansas City, in 1903, twenty years before to be an important Civil Servant In The Prague Embassy, Jonathan met so many new people, he was so happy to speak to these friends who continued to send him cool letters until the end of World War I: Fabulous memories and pictures kept in an old Book that He kept in Prague in his Bedroom, looking at his early years with a Smile, a Tear and a Kiss to the State he loved the best.

Apollo 8 Itinerary In The Space Continuum of The Huma Domain Of Travel between Earth and The Neighbor Planet, Earth 2, Alias MOON.

The CHREC team at the University of Florida has announced a new reconfigurable computing cluster.

The Novo-G system is being built using FPGA accelerator cards provided by GiDEL and Altera. The system will have 96 Altera Stratix-III FPGA devices, installed into 24 networked servers with 576GB of memory and 20Gb/s InfiniBand for interconnection.

According to Professor Alan George, the purpose of Novo-G is to “advance and prove reconfigurable computing technologies at a level of scale, performance, and productivity unprecedented in this field, for applications from satellites to supercomputers”.

Novo-G is based on PCI Express FPGA cards provided by GiDEL and populated with FPGAs provided by Altera. Support for C programming of these cards has been enabled with an Impulse C Platform Support Package (PSP) developed by Rafael Garcia at the CHREC lab.

creo que fue Julita, que me hacía vomitar porque no llevaba a clase boli rojo,

o igual fue papá durante algún clamor al cielo por mi aparente estupidez matemática.

El abuelín también me hizo un juego de mesa, útil como ninguna otra cosa, para dominar las operaciones básicas sobre las que se construiría inestable todo mi conocimiento matemático.
