Alcatel-Lucent (s alu) today is launching a group of products and services aimed at bolstering the service side of its business as well as helping its carrier customers feel better about their prospects in an increasingly open world. The telecommunications equipment maker is introducing its Application Exposure Suite, an Open API Service and consulting services that it envisions becoming the bridge between apps developers and the carrier networks.

However, to make that bridge a viable market opportunity, it has to convince app makers that carriers have something to offer them, as well as overcome years of proprietary behavior and code that has dominated the telecommunications industry. Johnson Agogbua, VP of global application enablement solutions, says 73 percent of carriers are willing to allow access to their network for API calls, so he believes carriers are ready to open up their networks selectively behind the Application Exposure Suite. He added that the Open API service will allow developers to build and test their apps so the code will work with the information from the wide variety of different operators which may be using non-Alcatel-Lucent gear in their networks.

To handle the fact that not all operators use Alcatel-Lucent’s equipment, the company is trying to sign partnerships with other equipment vendors as well as service providers to ensure an app works across the whole telecommunications infrastructure, from wired to wireless. However, it’s not clear how far along Alcatel-Lucent is when it comes to those partnerships.

Even as Agogbua assured me that carriers are willing to open up their networks to API calls, and have great information to share, I’m not convinced that carriers are ready or able to become like the big web firms such as Twitter or even Salesforce.com and provide access to their data. Also, that data won’t be free. Carriers will expect to be paid for their intelligent pipes. Location data is the only thing carriers are offering at the moment. Agogbua says in the future they will make billing information, content delivery across multiple devices, voice mail info and intelligent presence available to application developers. If they do it soon and well, it could be compelling enough for big apps developers to use, but a lot has to go right before we reach that point.

Mau cerita lagi, pagi ini tiba2 HP aq bunyi..tring tring..ternyata ms Edy Yusuf telp. Ada apa gerangan? oo…hore…aktivasi Tsel Padang. Alhamdulillah ya, smoga Icon+ semakin jaya. Kali ini sy pengen sharing gmn caranya create NE baru di NMS ALU. Berikut langkah2 nya:

1. Team Lapangan akan meminta kita OS Addres di NMS, hal ini supaya NE baru bisa termonitor di NMS kita

buka NM –> Pilih salah satu NE –> Klik kanan –> set address –> OS Address –> Tinggal bacain angka2 yg ada di kolom Area, System ID, sel

2. Alokasikan port catalys buat monitoringnya (nb: nms alu tdk mengguanakan ip ya, jadinya via metro trus di crossconectin ke vlan di router gandul) –> ukt point ini sy blm terlalu mengerti, tinggal di lempar ke team IP, hehehe , dimohon info versi tepatnya

3. Kemudian setelah settingan di NE nya okay (by team lapangan), mereka akan menginfokan NE address nya, nah sekarang tinggal kita upload di NM

Buka NM –> pilih area mana (misal reg sumatra) –> declarations –> create NE –> Kemudian utk mengisi kolom2nya (family, tipe, etc) kita tinggal samain ama NE yang sdh aktif (dlm satu area) , kecuali utk Q3 nya kita isikan NE address yg diinfokan oleh team lapangan.

4. Kalau udah muncul icon New NE nya..selanjutnya kita supervisi, caranya : klik kanan new NE –> supervisions –> allign up

5. Kalau udah kita tinggal upload deh ke RM, caranya : masuk ke network nya (misal reg sumtra) –> clik kanan –> create –> node

Hey everyone, Bernard here. Starting my new project to turn my aluminium bike into a fully carbon framed one. On its own, it doesn’t sound like much, but there’s abit of history to this particular undertaking, so indulge me a little while…

This merida that I’m going to upgrade is actually my 3rd bike. The 1st being a monstrous 16kg road/cyclocross (it even had disc brakes) bike I bought new for about SGD240 on eBay during my days in australia.

Needless to say, I suffered alot while cutting my teeth on this one. Its colossal 16kgs in weight was actually the least of its problems. The disc brakes on this ones were the cheap non-hydraulic types (which carry their own set of problems) and never stayed true… Even with continual adjustments, I was constantly grinding my brakes while pedaling.  Love-HATE relationship with this 1st one (I think everyone loves their 1st bike the most… something like all your 1st gfs/bfs.. I just hated this one the most as well). Needless to say, I wanted a new one, fast… so I started on my 2nd bike after just half a year.

My 2nd bike I made from scratch. I bought the parts individually online (yeah, I STILL have not learnt my lesson about online bikes). Decided to up the ante on this one as I would work on it as a project over a planned 3 months, which allowed me a better budget. Put together Mavic Aksiums  (new), full Ultegra grouppo (2nd hand), Trek madone frame (2nd hand 90s model, full carbon, took 3 months to arrive from Europe. 3 months.), Look carbon fork (2nd hand), Selle SMP saddle (new and oh-so-comfortable). Spent SGD 1300 for this one. Worth every penny spent. Just riding it over my 1st bike allowed me to pull for the whole ride at a faster than usual speed instead of constantly being pulled by my cycle buddies in Australia. Sweet ride. Fell in love with this one and dumped the previous bike… It was painful, but the relationship had to end…

Now, my 3rd bike, the one I’m currently looking to upgrade. Got it because I was trying to get my woman (CY) interested in road cycling. Obviously, I needed an extra bike to ride with her so I passed my 2nd (read: most beloved built-from-scratch full carbon bike) to her as she was just about as tall as me, and the bike would fit her somewhat well. So I bought the Merida from a cycling buddy who was converting back to MTBs (why would anyone even do that? :P ) after coming back to Singapore. Merida S3 entry level alu. Tiagra grouppo, upgraded with carbon fork. Got it at 300 bucks which was a steal considering that the bike was only about 1 year old, and hadn’t done many miles.

Now, why the upgrade? Cause CY crashed during a group ride when the newbie in front of her jammed his brakes with her riding 2 inches behind him. She escaped with only minor bruises, which I’m truly thankful for, but the dropout on the carbon trek got bent… Sent it to the bike shop, and was told that there was also a hairline fracture and that they’d be nervous about bending the dropout straight again… Personally, I’m okay with riding with a restraightened dropout with a hairline fracture (esp since this particular frame was my carbon frame that I waited 3 months for and fell in love with after…), but I wouldn’t let her do it as she was much less of a “bike whisperer”… So she bought herself a new carbon Wilier Montirolo (which is another story in itself) at a discount from the same bike shop that was nervous about straightening the dropouts (hmm….). So now I have a slightly defective carbon frame and fork sitting around my house. While the idea of riding with a dropout that has a hairline fracture may border on downright dangerous, I think I have found a way round it. I’ll get the fracture welded shut. I’ve been riding it with a hairline fracture for the longest of time with no problems in australia anyway, and while the recent crash may have excerbated (it grew SLIGHTY longer I think), I think its pretty safe to say that the dropout won’t fall apart. To further ensure this, I’m going to get the fracture welded shut (I know an aluminum worker). What do you think? Maybe you think I’m crazy, but I can’t bear to throw my carbon frame that’s otherwise perfect away… So I think I’m gonna do it!!

Pagi ini sy ad aktivasi di ALU (Gandul – Cawang). Waktu mau lihat hasil path nya: –> klik 2x di NE nya –> starting/Ending Path –> ok . ehm..seprtinya kolomnya ad yang kurang. defaultnya hanya ditampilin user label, operational state, alaram status, etc. Nah sy pengen nambahin satu kolom lagi utk customer (kayak di eci gt). Gimana caranya, selidik punya selidik berikut langkah2nya :

1. Klik kanan pada row [user label, operational state, etc]

2. Klik menu Preference

3. Pilih attribute yang diinginkan (dlm kasus saya adalah “customer”

4. Pada Kolom Position set di posisi kolom keberapa yang kita kehendaki [ kasus saya , customer di posisi kolom pertama]

6. Oya jgn lupa di save ya, caranya masuk lagi ke prefernce, pada bag kiri atas pilih save user default

Conocida también como ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit), podría decirse que es la calculadora interna del microprocesador, con capacidad para realizar operaciones aritméticas pero también de tipo lógico.

Las operaciones aritmético-lógicas que puede ejecutar por sí mismo un procesador dependerán del diseño de la ALU. Los x86 hasta el 80386, por ejemplo, contaban con una ALU que ofrecía únicamente operaciones con aritmética entera y solamente se contemplaban las cuatro operaciones aritméticas básicas. Las aplicaciones que requerían trabajar con coma flotante, y realizar operaciones más complejas, tenían que hacerlo por software, lo cual era lento, o bien requerir que el sistema contase con un coprocesador matemático.

En la actualidad los microprocesadores disponen de una ALU preparada para operara con aritmética entera y de punto flotante, ejecutando por hardware operaciones complejas que, de ser implementadas mediante software, requerirían mucho más tiempo.

La ALU cuenta con dos entradas, asumiéndose que una de ellas siempre es el acumulador y que la otra, procedente de cualquier otro registro o e la memoria, está en un registro temporal. La única salida, en la parte superior, se dirige al acumulador. En el funcionamiento de la ALU también interviene el contenido del registro de estado, si bien éste no actúa como un tercer operando sino como un agente externo que puede influir en la operación que realice la ALU. Dicha operación vendrá dictada por la unidad de control que, a través del bus interno, controla también el funcionamiento de la ALU.

Meeting hari senin kemarin ternyata membawa berkah yang luar biasa buat aq (alah,,hahha). Selain dapet kue2 yang maknyus, pengetahuan tentang karakteristik modul GBE ALU pun semakin terbuka. Untuk pengetesan BB PE IP MPLS yang sudah menghabiskan badget puluhan juta itu ternyata blm berhasil sodara2. Jalur transmisi yang dibuat via SDH ALU dengan kapasitas 1 G, ternyta belum tmbus.

Kami memakai card tipe ISA-ES16, dan untuk di aksesnya (yg bkalan di colokin ke router) adalah modul GETH-AGR. ISA-ES16 sendiri bisa mendelivere trafik sebesar 16 x STM 1 alias sekitar 2.5 G. GETH-AGR punya 4 port akses dan bisa mengeluarkan trafik sesuai cross conent yang dibuat, tergantung desainnya. Kombinasi2 yang bisa diterapkan adalah sebagai berikut:

1. Port 1 & 2 kapasitas 1 G dimana ini setara dgn 7 VC4 / STM-1 –> berarti 2 port dah ngabisin 14 VC4, so tinggal 2 VC4 lagi kan.. (sesuai kapasitas ISA-ES16 td). nah 2 VC4 itu bisa kita keluarin di port 3 & 4 dengan masing2 BW nya 100 Mbps (1 VC4)
2. Kombinasi yang laen sesuai kebutuhan, yang pasti prinsipnya ke -4 port tersebut cuma dijatah BW sebesar 16 VC4 ato 2.5 G. Apabila kita memaksakan mengkonfigure ke tiga port sebesar 1 G, maka port yg ke-3 tidak akan bisa mengeluarkan trafik 1 G, tp hanya 2 VC4 = 288 Mbps

Kemudian untuk pembuatan cross connect nya juga membutuhkan teknik tambahan, tidak seperti jika kita mendeliver service TDM. Setelah kita selesai buat XC di sisi SDH nya, kita juga harus membuat crosconnect di card GBE nya. InsyA laen kali klo ad waktu aq share ya caranya gmn.

Marmot EOS 2P

Ja gut, alles klar, ich geben es zu: Das Marmot EOS 2P ist bei Marmot nicht mehr in Angebot. Trotzdem schreibe ich meinen Senf dazu. Und vielleicht findet es ja noch jemand gebraucht und mag meine Erfahrungen drüber lesen? Ansonsten, die (noch) kleinere Variante des Zeltes gibt es noch zu kaufen.

Ein Bisschen drumherum
Das EOS 2P ist schon ein etwas merkwürdiges Zelt. Nun, zumindest die Gestängeführung ist eigenartig und bietet viel Diskussionsstoff für die Zeltnachbarn. Dabei gleicht die Gestängeführung vielen anderen Zelten (z.B. dem MSR Hubba, Salewa Ultima etc.). Sie zu beschreiben ist etwas umständlich und so verweise ich auf die zahlreichen, sich in diesem Artikel befindlichen Bilder. Während viele andere Hersteller mit einer simplen Firststange für Kopffreiheit sorgen, ging Marmot mit diesem Zelt einen anderen Weg und konstruierte ein Oval für den Zelthimmel. Nicht schlecht die Idee, da sie für eine ordentliche Kopffreiheit sorgt.
Möchte man auf einem Campingplatz lieber für sich allein bleiben ist das Zelt nicht unbedingt die richtige Wahl. Allein durch das (recht komplizierte) Zusammenstecken des Gestänges erweckt man die Aufmerksamkeit der nahestehenden Personen: „He, hast du denn einen Fernseher dabei?“ war kein seltener Spruch. Wie angesprochen ist das Zusammenstecken des Gestänges, oder vielmehr des Ovals, eine etwas fummelige Angelegenheit. Das Oval steht natürlich unter Spannung und die Verbindungen sind so nicht immer leicht zu treffen und zusammenzuführen oder zu trennen. Ab und an hat sich an einer gerade nicht behandelten Verbindung diese wieder etwas getrennt. Am Ende muss also eine prüfung erfolgen, ob denn nun auch wirklich alle Verbindungen stimmen. Falls nicht droht im Extremfall ein Gestängebruch/-riss. Das Zusammenstecken wird auch dadurch erschwert, dass das komplette Gestänge miteinander verbunden ist. Fummelt man das Oval zusammen, hängen links wie rechts die übrigen Gestängesegmente herunter. Nicht optimal gelöst.

Gibt es weitere Besonderheiten? Oh ja: zuerst ist hier das Sichtfenster am Eingang zu nennen. Das liefert zwar keinen optimalen Durchblick, dennoch kann man ganz gut schauen, was draußen vor sich geht. Ich fands gut, wenngleich ich es am Liebsten genutzt hab, wenn es draußen nass war und geregnet hat – dann war es freilich stets beschlagen. Schade.
Natürlich kann man auch einfach die Apsis öffnen und auf diese Weise rausschauen, nur ist das beim EOS und bei schlechten Wetter keine gute Idee. Öffnet man den Reißverschluss komplett, so tropft Regen direkt aufs und ins Innenzelt. Hmm. Das ist ein allgemeines Manko bei diesem Zelt. Es bleibt innen einfach nicht komplett trocken wenn man mal raus oder rein will. Wo wir schonmal bei der Apsis sind, ihr Reißverschluss hat mir gut gefallen, denn er ist regendicht (so, wie man es mittlerweile bei vielen Jacken sieht). Leider wird er dadurch auch etwas schwergängig, aber es klemmt sich kein Außenzeltmaterial im Reißverschluss ein, wie es z.B. so gern beim Salewa Micra vorkommt.
Sehr gut haben mir die Abspannungen an den vier Zeltecken und der Apsis gefallen. Sie bestehen aus einem gelochten Gurtband und entsprechend kann man die gewünschte Heringsposition recht gut wählen.

Materialien & Maße
Außenzelt: Nylon 40d Ripstop 2000mm PU/Silicone
Boden: 40d Nylon R/S 3000mm (sehr geringe Wassersäule, mit der ich in der Praxis aber keine Probleme hatte)
Gestänge: DAC FeatherLite 8.84mm
Abmessungen: 208 x 127 x 101cm (Länge, Breite, Höhe)
Gewicht: 2000g (Innen- und Außenzelt: 1330g, Gestänge: 500g, Heringe und Zubehör: 170g)

Aufbau
Innenzelt auslegen & mit Heringen fixieren, Gestänge zusammenstecken und in die Innenzeltecken stecken, das Innenzelt an das Gestänge anklippen, Außenzelt drüber und am Innenzelt anklippen, abspannen, fertig. Total banal. Nur das Gestägeoval ist eben etwas fummelig.

Einsatzbereich
Nun, wo setzt man das Zelt am Besten ein? Ganz klar, in warmen und möglichst trockenen Gebieten. Das EOS besitzt zwar nur einen relativ kleinen Lüfter im Himmel, davon ist das Außenzelt überall weit hochgezogen, was für eine gute Lüftung garantiert. Zusätzlich sind große Teile des Innenzeltes aus Moskitonetz gefertigt. Das alles spricht für ein gutes Zeltklima. Freilich fürchterlich geht es im Inneren jedoch zu, wenn es draußen stürmt. Ach, was rede ich: Wind reicht, um es drinnen gut ziehen zu lassen.
Man ist erschöpft, den Tag über hat es geregnet und es regnet noch. Es ist kalt und Wind kommt auf. Wo möchte man nun nicht sein? Genau, in diesem Zelt. Drinnen ist es kalt und nass und es zieht. Bereits beim Aufbau ist das Innenzzelt nass geworden – es muss zuerst aufgebaut werden. Beim Ein-und Aussteigen bessert sich das keineswegs. Nun, ich habs hinter mir und verzichte künftig gern drauf. …ja, nur zur Vollständigkeit: natürlich ist das Zelt an sich wasserdicht. Durch den Stoff drang natürlich nirgends ein Tropfen Wasser.

Ist das Wetter hingegen trocken und warm, so ist das Zelt ein wahrer Segen. Es heizt sich meines Erachtens nicht so stark auf wie viele andere Zelte und die gute Lüftung und ein Windchen innen drin sind sehr angenehm. Das Außenzelt kann man gut weglassen, prima.

Das gefällt mir

• Die Farbgebung ist klasse. Klar, absolut antiinkognito, dafür sorgt sie aber auch bei Schmuddelwetter für gute Laune. Und Ärger mit Insekten hatte ich auch keinen.
• große Apsis

• einfacher und schneller Auf- und Abbau
• sehr gute Belüftung
• Innenzelt einzeln aufstellbar

• öffnen des Außenzeltreißverschlusses nur durch weites Herauslehnen (verbunden mit einer morgendlichen Kondenswasserdusche)
• schwergängiger Außenzeltreißverschluss
• zu zweit zu klein – vom Raumgefühl viel kleiner als z.B. das Salewa Micra, trotz sehr ähnlicher Abmessungen

Und der Preis? Der lag ursprünglich bei 249€ – ich hatte es neu im Angebot für die Hälfte bekommen.

Und mein Prädikat?: Ohje, das ist schwer. Deswegen vergebe ich zwei Urteile.

Marmot

Kürzlich wurden mir praktischerweise zwei nagelneue Esbit Kochsets zu einem super Preis verkauft. Das Kleine habe ich bereits vorgestellt, das Mittlere kommt nun. Klein und mittel, das ist kein Schreibfehler: das große Set besitze ich (leider) nicht.

Lieferumfang, Daten & ein Bisschen drumherum

Der Lieferumfang ist gegenüber dem kleinen Set schon sehr vergrößert. Auch hier findet man den zum Transport praktischen Netzbeutel und ansonsten viel hart anodisiertes Aluminium, ein klein wenig Edelstahl für die Griffe und Messing für den Spiritusbrenner. Dieser bildet das Herzstück des Kochsets und ist dem von Trangia sehr ähnlich. Beide können untereinander ausgetauscht werden! Jetzt ist es schon raus, es handelt sich um ein Spirituskochset, welches aber auch mit Esbittabletten beheizt werden kann. Hierfür ist eine extra Ablage für die Tabletten mitgeliefert. Der Windschutz dient gleichzeitig als Topfstand. Der Topf besitzt eine Ausgießhilfe und die für eine Person sinnvolle Größe von rund 800ml Nutzvolumen mit ~1cm Luft nach oben (Esbit gibt 985ml für den großen und 470ml für den kleinen Topf an). Sollte man nicht sonderlich komplizertes/volumenraubendes kochen wollen, kommt man durchaus auch gut zu zweit mit dem Kochset zurecht. Ein richtiger Deckel fehlt dem Topf, dafür kann man den bereits angesprochenen zweiten Topf sehr gut als Deckel nutzen. Alternativ hat man mit dem zweiten Topf eine kleine Bratpfanne oder Tasse mit dabei. Da Aluminium aber eine hervorragende Wärmeleiteigenschaft besitzt, wird man sich bei dem Verzehr von heißen Getränken gut die Lippen verbrennen.

Anders als bei manch anderen Kochsets wird der Spiritusbrenner nicht in den Windschutz eingehängt, sondern direkt auf dessen Boden gestellt. Der Trangia-Gasbrenner oder Multifuel passt also nicht hinein. Sehr praktisch ist, dass beide Töpfe nicht vom Windschutz herunterrutschen können und stets einen sicheren Sitz haben: die Töpfe versinken rund einen cm im Windschutz.

Das Gewicht ist nicht rekordverdächtig, aber ordentlich und wird jetzt einfach mal aufgelistet (ca. Werte):
Großer Topf 155g
Kleiner Topf 85g
Windschutz 70g
Spiritusbrenner 110g
Esbittablettenauflage 22g
Netzbeutel 18g
Insgesamt kommt man also maximal auf 460g.

Das gefällt mir

Das gesamte Set ist sehr gut verarbeitet und macht in jeder Hinsicht einen hochwertigen Eindruck – chic ist es außerdem. Durch die Verwendbarkeit von Esbittabletten oder Spiritus ist man recht variabel und sehr leise unterwegs. Zudem sollte es auch keine Defekte oder Wartungsarbeiten geben, sofern man nicht drüberfährt.
Das Gewicht ist in Ordnung, das Packmaß auch. Die Nutzgrößen prädestinieren das Set für eine Person und machen es noch gut brauchbar, wenn man zu zweit unterwegs ist.
Praktischerweise kann das gesamte Set im großen Topf ziemlich klapperfrei verstaut werden, außer…

Das gefällt mir nicht

…außer der kleine Topf. Hier wäre es doch praktisch ihn so zu gestalten, dann man den großen in den kleinen Topf hineinstellen kann – das würde Packmaß sparen.
Desweiteren wäre ein besserer Windschutz wünschenswert. Dieser hier ist doch arg durchlöchert und bietet nur wenig Windschutz. Manuelles Nachbessern, z.B. mit Alufolie, ist sinnvoll.
Ansonsten: keine Kritik.

Und der Preis? Der ist richtig klasse: 35€ für das komplette Set ist nun wirklich ein Wort!
Und mein Prädikat? Sehr Empfehlenswert. Ich finde das Set super!

Lieferumfang
Das hart-anodisierte Aluminium gibt sich in elegantem Grau und bildet einen gelungenen Kontrast zu… Geschwafel. Also: Mit von der Partie sind ein HA-Alutopf mit klappbaren, isolierten Griffen aus Edelstahl, Maßskala (Liter und Oz.) und Ausgießhilfe. Dazu ein Deckel mit klappbarem Edelstahlgriff und das Gestell für den Topf. Letzteres dient gleichzeitig als Windschutz für die windempfindliche Esbittablette.

Ich sach hier die ganze Zeit „Topf“, das scheint aber beinah übertrieben, denn diese Gerätschaft fasst laut Esbit nur 585ml. Hmm, eher eine große Tasse? Die 585ml beziffern das Maß bis Anfang Deckel. Mit Zutaten Reinkippen und Umrühren ist da nicht mehr viel. Dann doch eher der eingestanzten Skala folgen, sie reicht bis 400ml, und dies als Nutzmaß annehmen – je nachdem was man vor hat auch noch etwas mehr.
Angenehm sind das geringe Gewicht von knapp unter 200g – Esbit gibt ~197g an – und das geringe Packmaß. Rund 111 x 86mm sind ein Wort. Der Windschutz wird beim Transport einfach in das Topftassending getan, Deckel drauf und eingepackt in den, hatte ich oben glatt vergessen, Netzpackbeutel.

Jedes Detail macht auf mich einen wirklich sehr ordentlichen & soliden Eindruck und für den rauhen Umgang und unvorsichtige Zeitgenossen scheint mir das Set ideal. Fährt man nicht zufällig mit einem Panzer drüber, sollte man es sicher nicht kaputt bekommen. Da, sofern man nicht die Griffe abfriemelt, keine Kleinteile vorhanden sind, sollte unterwegs auch nichts im hohen Gras verloren gehen können.
Optik und Haptik stimmen und die Verarbeitung ist sehr gut.

Kritik? Die gibt es. Naja, eine klitzekleine: Ist das Set verpackt, klappert es wie hulle. Tragisch ist das nicht, lässt es sich doch durch das einfache Beifügen eines Lappens beseitigen. Und der Lappen dient dann gleich für den Abwasch.
Kein Kritikpunkt, aber erwähnenswert: das Set ist nur für den Betrieb mit Esbittabletten vorgesehen. Ich bevorzuge sie nicht, aber für eins, zwei Übernachtungen auf einer Solotour passen sie schon und lassen sich gut portionieren. Für mehr Personen ist das Kochset ohnehin nicht gedacht und geeignet.

In der Praxis habe ich meinen neuen Kocher noch nicht testen können und so erübrigt sich eine abschließende Beurteilung vorerst. Der erste und zweite Eindruck ist jedoch sehr positiv.

Und der Hammer kommt zum Schluss: das ganze Set kostet keine 20€!

Hey everyone, Bernard here. Starting my new project to turn my aluminium bike into a fully carbon framed one. On its own, it doesn’t sound like much, but there’s abit of history to this particular undertaking, so indulge me a little while…

This merida that I’m going to upgrade is actually my 3rd bike. The 1st being a monstrous 16kg road/cyclocross (it even had disc brakes) bike I bought new for about SGD240 on eBay during my days in australia.

My 1st Ride. Heavy!!!

Needless to say, I suffered alot while cutting my teeth on this one. Its colossal 16kgs in weight was actually the least of its problems. The disc brakes on this ones were the cheap non-hydraulic types (which carry their own set of problems) and never stayed true… Even with continual adjustments, I was constantly grinding my brakes while pedaling.  Love-HATE relationship with this 1st one (I think everyone loves their 1st bike the most… something like all your 1st gfs/bfs.. I just hated this one the most as well). Needless to say, I wanted a new one, fast… so I started on my 2nd bike after just half a year.

My 2nd bike I made from scratch. I bought the parts individually online (yeah, I STILL have not learnt my lesson about online bikes). Decided to up the ante on this one as I would work on it as a project over a planned 3 months, which allowed me a better budget. Put together Mavic Aksiums  (new), full Ultegra grouppo (2nd hand), Trek madone frame (2nd hand 90s model, full carbon, took 3 months to arrive from Europe. 3 months.), Look carbon fork (2nd hand), Selle SMP saddle (new and oh-so-comfortable). Spent SGD 1300 for this one. Worth every penny spent. Just riding it over my 1st bike allowed me to pull for the whole ride at a faster than usual speed instead of constantly being pulled by my cycle buddies in Australia. Sweet ride. Fell in love with this one and dumped the previous bike… It was painful, but the relationship had to end…

Now, my 3rd bike, the one I’m currently looking to upgrade. Got it because I was trying to get my woman (CY) interested in road cycling. Obviously, I needed an extra bike to ride with her so I passed my 2nd (read: most beloved built-from-scratch full carbon bike) to her as she was just about as tall as me, and the bike would fit her somewhat well. So I bought the Merida from a cycling buddy who was converting back to MTBs (why would anyone even do that? :P ) after coming back to Singapore. Merida S3 entry level alu. Tiagra grouppo, upgraded with carbon fork. Got it at 300 bucks which was a steal considering that the bike was only about 1 year old, and hadn’t done many miles.

Now, why the upgrade? Cause CY crashed during a group ride when the newbie in front of her jammed his brakes with her riding 2 inches behind him. She escaped with only minor bruises, which I’m truly thankful for, but the dropout on the carbon trek got bent… Sent it to the bike shop, and was told that there was also a hairline fracture and that they’d be nervous about bending the dropout straight again… Personally, I’m okay with riding with a restraightened dropout with a hairline fracture (esp since this particular frame was my carbon frame that I waited 3 months for and fell in love with after…), but I wouldn’t let her do it as she was much less of a “bike whisperer”… So she bought herself a new carbon Wilier Montirolo (which is another story in itself) at a discount from the same bike shop that was nervous about straightening the dropouts (hmm….). So now I have a slightly defective carbon frame and fork sitting around my house. While the idea of riding with a dropout that has a hairline fracture may border on downright dangerous, I think I have found a way round it. I’ll get the fracture welded shut. I’ve been riding it with a hairline fracture for the longest of time with no problems in australia anyway, and while the recent crash may have excerbated (it grew SLIGHTY longer I think), I think its pretty safe to say that the dropout won’t fall apart. To further ensure this, I’m going to get the fracture welded shut (I know an aluminum worker). What do you think? Maybe you think I’m crazy, but I can’t bear to throw my carbon frame that’s otherwise perfect away… So I think I’m gonna do it!!

So es wird mal wieder Zeit für “Innovationen” auf Botchjob. Der Umzug in etwas bessere Wohnlagen meines kleinen Städtchens hat mich geographisch auch näher an den lokalen Schrottplatz verpflanzt. Diesen Umstand empfinde ich als ausgesprochen angenehm, da sich die Anfahrt zum Schrottie um satte 10-15 Minuten verkürzt hat. Da sinkt die Hemmschwelle “mal ebend” auf dem Platz vorbeizuschauen doch erheblich. Leider sind die “Öffnungszeiten”, nicht so wahnsinnig studentenfreundlich, um 16:00 sind bereits alle Schotten dicht, und da ist man als fleißiger Studi natürlich noch in der Uni. Hin und wieder schafft mans aber doch mal da durch die Container zu stromern.

Der Langen Rede kurzer Sinn, in Zukunft werde ich unter dem Schlagwort “Schrottplatzfunde” immer mal wieder bloggen, was man da so abgegriffen hat. Der Einfachheit  halber werden auch alle Sperrmüllfunde unter dieser Kategorie verbucht. Einwände ? Keine, gut so

Nokia Siemens, a telecommunications equipment joint venture, plans to lay off up to 5,700 employees, or 7-9 percent of its work force, in order to cut about $740 million in costs. The company, which is a joint venture between Siemens (s si) and cell phone maker Nokia (s nok), will also whittle down to three business units from five. But you wouldn’t really get it after reading the headline on its press release which states, “Nokia Siemens Networks Targets Improved Financial Performance, Return to Growth.”

Look, I get that you probably don’t want to title your press release, “We’re Laying off 5,700 Workers,” but the headline chosen is too divorced from reality for my tastes. Emphasize the positive by all means, but the title amounts to wishful thinking, especially given the incredible difficulties the entire telecommunication equipment market faces. Remember Nortel (s nt)? Like that “Little Engine that Could,” Nokia Siemens may think it can, but this isn’t a children’s story, and it might not have a happy ending.

With intense competition coming from European competitors Alcatel-Lucent (s alu) and Ericsson (s eric) and even more fierce rivalry from the upstart Asian vendors, Huawei, and ZTE, selling telecom equipment is getting more cutthroat. The company is dragging down its backers, with Nokia marking down $1.4 billion of its investment in the joint venture during the most recent quarter, despite efforts a year ago to cut costs. Cutting costs is only going to take Nokia Siemens so far, and it’s not likely to get it over the hill into profitability and growth.
