Many homeowners look a for an air conditioning unit they can trust. For years Americans have looked at Amana as one of the most favored and reliable air conditioning units available on the market. Amana has been serving its customers since the first walk-in cooler and Radarange microwave oven were introduced (both were company innovations). There is no doubt about Amana’s systems being premium and high-quality lines for air conditioning units, but they are also one of the most energy efficient in the marketplace.

It’s no wonder many Florida cities and counties like Broward, West Palm, and Deerfield Beach choose only the best air conditioning units for home use. Make sure to choose Amana as your next home AC unit. Contact your Broward Air Conditioning Service Company and see what they have to offer you.

S-a suparat.

Greu…

When I first started this blog, I meant for it to be more of a guide to living in Morocco with just

When I first started this blog, I meant for it to be more of a guide to living in Morocco with just a few of my personal stories peppered in and throughout, but somehow I seem to get off track from that a lot. I meant to write about mail and packages much sooner than this too! But, it’s actually good because a few things have happened lately that hopefully will provide more experience that will be helpful with others. Dealing with mailing facilities here is no different from dealing with any other process. It’s full of frustration, confusion, and palm padding. I’m sure many others in Morocco can share something different from what I write based upon their experiences and I hope they will.

Let’s Start with Mail

Way back when, one of my first posts was about ending two-year contracts with cell phone companies early, in my case AT&T. In that post I reported that after about a year of emails back and forth, a few scathing emails, and some faxing of numerous documents they finally decided that I do in fact live in Morocco and agreed to refund the early termination fees (we had two accounts). In one of their last emails, they told me a check would be mailed to my current address 2-3 days after the final decision was made. We trusted the process and figured it would be about a month or so before the check came. Three months later, no check and I just wondered if it got lost in the Moroccan mail- even though I’ve gotten AT&T mail in our mail slot before.

So, I had to email them once again to try to track down this money over a year since I’d ended the contract. Luckily, they provided me with a toll-free international number that I was able to use Skype to call for free. It cut out on me a few times so I had to call back, try to get myself redirected to whom I was first speaking with. I had to give up the first day, but by the second day I got everything squared away. In fact, the check had not been lost in the mail, but never sent by AT&T. My account was in fact credited, but apparently they just didn’t bother to send it back to me. This time, I was told the check would take 7-10 days to arrive if mailed in the United States*, so I figured about a month for it to arrive in Morocco and marked the calendar to call AT&T 30 days later if it had not.

At the 30 day mark, I decided to give it one more day and that one more day was greeted with the check in our mail slot. So, now the challenge was to get the check back to the United States to our bank account there since I couldn’t cash it in our bank account here. I signed the check with”for deposit only” (just in case) and we went off to the post office to mail it out. We always go to post kebir downtown. We started there and inquired about sending it certified, insured, and all of that. They sent us to the Amana office right next door where packages are mailed and sent. A quick inquiry there yielded an option that would cost 400DH. Uh, no. So, we went back to the post office and inquired there about sending the letter certified and were told it would be 25 DH which seemed so much more reasonable. The clerk told us that sometimes sending them certified is not always accepted by the receiver, but she was mentioning it in regards to immigration documents (because apparently any Moroccan mailing to the United States must be dealing with immigration?) She also told us it would reach the bank in 10 days so we went for it feeling it was a better option than sending it by regular mail.

When we left the bank with a receipt in hand we realized she short-changed us by 10 DH. We were about to go back in to get it but quickly decided that perhaps leaving it for her was a better idea since that might ensure our letter is mailed properly. Low and behold, I checked the bank balance 11 business days later (just this past Monday) and the money has been safely deposited. So, when it comes to mailing important documents (or money) from Morocco spend the extra 25 DH and let the clerk short change you a few DH to make sure your mail arrives safely.

We don’t receive much mail here. In fact, I’ve caught the mail man walking down the street a few times, and his mail bag is so thin and he hardly stops at any of the houses. I haven’t had any problem receiving bank statements and AT&T bills, then checks in our mail slot, but if you plan to get a lot of mail, especially of any official or important variety, I would suggest going for a post office box at your local post office location. They cost 200 DH for the year, and only you will have access to the box unlike in an apartment building where nosy neighbors might get their hands on your stuff.

The post office system in Morocco offers some other unique features such as money transfers within the country as well as a few automated mail services at self-serve kiosks. I sometimes find such technology quite odd when it’s situated in neighborhoods where people are still living in shanty shacks- still progress is slow, but good.

Packages are a whole other beast…

Much more frustrating than mail can be sending and receiving packages from all ends. I’ll start from the beginning when my husband (not then my husband) wanted to send some things to his family in Morocco from the United States. He shopped for weeks to buy each person things they wanted and things they’d like, but didn’t have to spend too much money in doing so. We packaged everything up in a duffel bag on wheels which he also wanted to send and headed to Mailboxes, Etc. There, we found out the bag itself was too large to mail, and too heavy all packed up to send. So, the clerk patiently boxed up items individually where we were able to specify a package for each member of the family. The clerk saw everything going into the boxes and advised us to put close actual values on the packages which ranges from $10-$40. About $250 later, all but the duffel bag where ready to be sent.

Ten days later, he got a call from his family saying that the post office in El Jadida refused to release the boxes to them unless they paid 200 DH because the value of the boxes was declared at such high values. They were insisting on opening the boxes to inspect the contents. Finally, my brother-in-law had to go from Rabat to speak with the postal workers and use some of his police officer influence to get the packages released about two weeks later. I’m sure some amount was paid, but to the person that released them and not to the post office general fund. The postal staff insisted that any package over $10 in value has to be paid for by the Moroccan receiver. Lesson learned: when sending a package from the United States, only declare a value of $10 or less (unless it is something truly valuable that you must insure).

Fast forward to us living in Morocco. About a month after I returned to Morocco, my parents decided to send a package just to see how it worked. They bought us two Patriots T-shirts (since we had been watching NFL every Sunday on our satellite) and a bag of Kit Kats for my brother-in-law. Mailing it from USPS, my mother choose the cheapest available way to send the package- by a boat. She had a receipt from payment with a long number on it, but not much more information than that. She was told it would take about 17-20 days. Thirty days later, we received no notice in the mailbox that the package had been received. We started visiting the Amana office to see if the package arrived even though we hadn’t received a slip. At first they told us we needed a number. So, my mom sent me the number on the receipt, but when we brought them the number it wasn’t the right type of number (too many or two few digits or something). After a few more visits, one day waiting until everyone returned for lunch while we were starving ourselves, we finally got one of the package handlers to look through the packages by name to see if they could find it. Nothing. After a while, we gave up.

About a month later, I received word from friends that they were sending us a package. About 12 days later, we received a slip in our mail slot announcing the packaged had arrived and was ready for pick up. Our only problem in picking up the package this time was the extremely slow for no reason service of the woman behind the desk. We explained to her that we needed to catch the train to work in Casablanca which only seemed to make her put our slip of the bottom of the pile and take her sweet time giving it to the handler to retrieve. I mean, she was literally sitting at her desk doing nothing and making us wait for no good reason. That was frustrating, and we were already nervous that they were going to want to open the package and inspect it since we saw other people’s packages being picked through. When our box finally came out, they handed it over without a word. If I recall, the package was declared with a $20 value, but insured, yet still unlike in El Jadida we weren’t asked to pay any money. This, of course, only goes to show the consistent inconsistency of rules, regulations, and corruption in Morocco.

Just last week, I received word that another package from the same friends will be sent this week. Can’t wait to get it because I requested some chili powder so I can make a lovely pot of chili among a few other requests. I will definitely post about the package’s arrival and any trials in picking it up from the Post Office.

Sending packages from Morocco to the United States

I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually done this. The only thing I know about it is from the United States Consulate in Morocco website which says you must get a specific form from the Consulate, which cost $30 to mail personal belongings to the United States, in addition to the expense of getting to and from Casa if you don’t actually live there. Seems so not worth it, and I’ve amended my list of Moroccan goods I want to bring back to the United States to that which can only fit in our suitcases. But then, I kinda wonder how to get around it. Could my husband send a package to the United States without having to obtain prior permission from the Consulate, by just stating he wants to ship a package to someone? Or perhaps just like Western Union, there is a whole process for Moroccans who want to send packages to the United States that also requires a lot of running around and various documents.

From the Consulate FAQ website:

I’m leaving Morocco. How can I obtain authorization to ship my personal belongings to another country?

In order to ship your personal effects from Morocco to another country, you must obtain authorization from the Moroccan Customs Office in the region where you live in Morocco. To obtain this authorization, you will need to provide a sworn statement notarized by the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca that provides your biographical and residence information in Morocco and your new address in the country to which you are moving. You can obtain and fill out this document at the U.S. Consulate during our normal American Citizen Services hours. Please note that you must pay a $30 notarization fee and bring your U.S. passport for this service.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that it’s not as simple as it sounds here because nothing thus far has been. Anyone with any experience in sending and receiving mail, sending and receiving packages, and shipping personal belongings is welcome and encouraged to comment.

*Of course, they wouldn’t send the check to a United States address otherwise they wouldn’t have agreed to provide the refund. That would have disproved the fact that I’m living in Morocco even though I use my parent’s address as my current permanent U.S. address at the moment.

Every once in a while you have those special moments of realization as a mom. Glimpses of glory. Morning has broken, the sky is caught in the rapture of sunrise, and children sit singing happily over their Cheerios in a perfectly clean kitchen. They mind their manners, they obey with a smile, and kiss you as they flit out the door for the bus.

Then there are evenings of “special” realization when you think that all your hard work and discipline has flown right out the window, and that your offspring might very well have a puff of blue cotton candy between their ears instead of a brain. They don’t like your cooking [too bad, breakfast's at 8], they mope when they are supposed to be clearing the table, they decide to rebel. Blatantly.

Tonight it was our youngest’s turn. He had his own Battle of Little Bighorn right in our kitchen. He didn’t want to eat my delicious Pasta Bolognese and instead wanted to feed his sugar high with yet another “Amana Bar.” When I told him that he didn’t get dessert unless he ate his dinner, he kindly shared with me that I should “go into a river with sharks.”

Precious, gentle little boy.

Conveniently, I have lost my voice and graciously deferred the confrontation to my husband. So thoughtful, I know. Brandon scolded him for speaking disrespectfully to me, gave him the 4 year-old lecture, and ushered him to time out.

You can imagine what a hit that was! After all–not only was he separated from the family, but he was still screaming for a blessed “Amana” Bar! [They are pretty fantastic] As my husband sat next to him, calmly giving him instructions like Jo Frost with stubble, M conjures up his best response yet:

“Dad, I don’t like this! I’m so MAD! YOU’RE GONNA BE FIRED!!”

~~~
For BANANA BARS they’ll fight over:
3 large mashed bananas
1.5 C sugar
1 stick butter, room temp
2 eggs, beaten
1 C sour cream [8 oz]
2 tsp. vanilla
[2 C flour + 1 tsp. baking soda + 1 tsp. salt] mix and add to other batter
Mix together and put in a greased jelly roll pan.
Bake @ 375* for 20-25. Check for doneness with a toothpick. Cool, frost, enjoy!
Frosting
2/3 stick butter: melt over low heat in sauce pan, stirring until light brown & bubbly. Remove from heat.
2.5 C powered sugar
Amana Investments that received provisional licence to open a commercial bank was supposed to commence banking operations in October. However, due to certain constraints, things did not work according the plan. They have requested permission from Central Bank to extend the period. Their Malaysian investors also were in Sri Lanka recently. It is also learnt that the aditional capital is coming from Kuwaiti investors. Insha Allah Amana Bank, the first Islamic Bank in Sri Lanka may open the doors in January 2010.
As we all know ‘every thing in the hands of Almighty Allah.’
Therefore please include in your prayers that May Almighty Allah make things easier for them.
On Friday I went to Amana’s house.If you don’t know who Amana is,she’s one of my best friends and we go wayyy back.Any who,when I’m with her we don’t exactly plan anything out.I mean,sure we’ve gone to tons of places,events,parties together but everything almost pops out spontaneously.It’s weird..
So there we were trying to get her brother to watch TV so we can actually “talk talk” , if you know what i mean.
As some time passed,we had finally succeeded and began jabbering away like we do every week,catching up on the five days we weren’t together.: ) Before we knew it,it was about 10ish and I had to go home.Fortunately for us,Amana’s dad was in a really good mood and gave her permission to spend the night at my place.Now that,was like having warm home made chocolate chip cookies being served to you on a rainy day.It felt good.
Since I had just found out that she never watched the movie Blood Diamond yet,I ordered her to rent it.
Sitting in our basement cuddled up with blankets and pizza and pop and all the things that give you more acne than you already have,we drooled over Leonardo Dicaprio and his African accent.BOY oh boy..
“He is SO hot” she said.Her eyes looked all dreamy.
“DIDN’T I TELL YOU?!!? DAMN,HE MAKES THE MOVIE TEN TIMES BETTER!”
“Even when he runs,” She said still looking dreamy.
“Even when he looks mad,” I said playing on feeling very giddy inside.
“Even when he’s killing people,” we laughed.
It was true,he looked good doing anything at anytime.
And as the movie went on, i tried my best not to tear up when he was going to die,trying to save it because if i did cry,then she’d know he was gonna end up dying.As we both watched the scene we started bawling like babies.It was hilarious!
“I dont wan’t him to die,Sophia” Amana said with a laughing/sad smile.
“I know man,GOD.Why the hell does he have to die!”
“He’s too hot to dieee…Nooooooooo…” She said bawling as we started to laugh and cry at the same time.
After the movie we stayed up till 4 am,talking and talking and talking until finally we fell right to sleep.
In the morning,we walked to Tim’s and got ourselves an ice cap and a couple of donuts.I also dragged Amana to Fish world to show her the great white parrot i had seen the day before and the moment i walked the cashier said “Hey,you’re the bird lady!”
That made me laugh quite a bit.He called me the bird lady because on Thursday,when i went out jogging i dropped by the place to check out the birds and snatched one from it’s cage.He said i was the first one that could pick the bird up.I don’t exactly know why he was surprised.Perhaps the cockatiel was a biter.
As i looked up to reply i noticed how cute he was,I had missed to see it the day before.He was definitely something.Anyway,talking to a cute guy is not something i’m very good at so i tried to say as little as possible.
“Uhh,yeah! Just wanted to show my friend the bird,” I said smiling,trying to pretend that the nerves weren’t killing me in the inside.
As we left Fish World,we were going to make our way back home but since I really didn’t want to go home just yet,we took the longer route to my house.And that,was where I had spotted a tree.
"DON'T CLIMB ME"
The tree had a very scary looking face,as if it were trying to warn us not to climb it.We did anyway.It turned out to be pretty swell,and we decided to hang around for a bit.
Studying Bio lol
I like this picture.:)
We took some really cool shots on this tree,and got ourselves some good memories.Amana had fallen off ,right on her back and it was the funniest thing i had ever seen.After I asked her if she was all right,we both howled with laughter.I don’t think i’ll ever forget the way she fell off that tree.Man,it was funny.
BOO! I SEE YOU.
I also took some mirror shots since I finally had a model.They turned out okay.
We were literally drinking that stuff like they were shots.
LOL
…That as the cold months approach there are things you can do to save a few dollars on your energy bills?
1) Install a programmable thermostat. This will prevent you from forgetting to turn down the thermostat when you leave the house or go to bed at night. The cost is minimal and can pay off with 10% savings on your heating bills.
2) Change your filters regularly. This will keep your system work more efficiently. Air flows better through the system and as an added benefit the air will be healthier.
3) Get an energy audit. Having a professional come and do an energy audit can show you excatly where you can cut some costs and take the guess work out of it.
4) Replace you old inefficient heat pump with a new more efficient unit. Not only does this save on your heating costs, but there are also federal tax credits available for qualified energy efficient units.
THE SONG OF SOLOMON
CHAPTER 1
1 The song of songs, which [is] Solomon’s.
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love [is] better than wine.
3 Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name [is as] ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
4 Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
5 I [am] black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”, as the tents of Kedar“blackness; sorrow”, as the curtains of Solomon“peaceable; perfect; one who recompenses”.
6 Look not upon me, because I [am] black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; [but] mine own vineyard have I not kept.
7 Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest [thy flock] to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
8 ¶ If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds’ tents.
9 I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh’s chariots.
10 Thy cheeks are comely with rows [of jewels], thy neck with chains [of gold].
11 We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.
12 ¶ While the king [sitteth] at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
13 A bundle of myrrh [is] my wellbeloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
14 My beloved [is] unto me [as] a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of En-gedi“eye, or fountain, of the goat, or of happiness”.
15 Behold, thou [art] fair, my love; behold, thou [art] fair; thou [hast] doves’ eyes.
16 Behold, thou [art] fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed [is] green.
17 The beams of our house [are] cedar, [and] our rafters of fir.
CHAPTER 2
1 I [am] the rose of Sharon“his plain; his song”, [and] the lily of the valleys.
2 As the lily among thorns, so [is] my love among the daughters.
3 As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so [is] my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit [was] sweet to my taste.
4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me [was] love.
5 Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I [am] sick of love.
6 His left hand [is] under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.
7 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake [my] love, till he please.
8 ¶ The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
9 My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.
10 My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
11 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over [and] gone;
12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing [of birds] is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines [with] the tender grape give a [good] smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
14 ¶ O my dove, [that art] in the clefts of the rock, in the secret [places] of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet [is] thy voice, and thy countenance [is] comely.
15 Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines [have] tender grapes.
16 ¶ My beloved [is] mine, and I [am] his: he feedeth among the lilies.
17 Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether“division, or in the trial”.
CHAPTER 3
1 By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
2 I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
3 The watchmen that go about the city found me: [to whom I said], Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
4 [It was] but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
5 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake [my] love, till he please.
6 ¶ Who [is] this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?
7 Behold his bed, which [is] Solomon’s; threescore valiant men [are] about it, of the valiant of Israel“who prevails with God”.
8 They all hold swords, [being] expert in war: every man [hath] his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
9 King Solomon“peaceable; perfect; one who recompenses” made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon“white, incense”.
10 He made the pillars thereof [of] silver, the bottom thereof [of] gold, the covering of it [of] purple, the midst thereof being paved [with] love, for the daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”.
11 Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion“monument; raised up; sepulcher”, and behold king Solomon“peaceable; perfect; one who recompenses” with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.
CHAPTER 4
1 Behold, thou [art] fair, my love; behold, thou [art] fair; thou [hast] doves’ eyes within thy locks: thy hair [is] as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead“the heap or mass of testimony”.
2 Thy teeth [are] like a flock [of sheep that are even] shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none [is] barren among them.
3 Thy lips [are] like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech [is] comely: thy temples [are] like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.
4 Thy neck [is] like the tower of David“well-beloved, dear” builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
5 Thy two breasts [are] like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.
6 Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.
7 Thou [art] all fair, my love; [there is] no spot in thee.
8 ¶ Come with me from Lebanon“white, incense”, [my] spouse, with me from Lebanon: look from the top of Amana“integrity; truth; a nurse”, from the top of Shenir“lantern; light that sleeps” and Hermon“anathema; devoted to destruction”, from the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards.
9 Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, [my] spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
10 How fair is thy love, my sister, [my] spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!
11 Thy lips, O [my] spouse, drop [as] the honeycomb: honey and milk [are] under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments [is] like the smell of Lebanon“white, incense”.
12 A garden inclosed [is] my sister, [my] spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.
13 Thy plants [are] an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,
14 Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:
15 A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon“white, incense”.
16 ¶ Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, [that] the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.
CHAPTER 5
1 I am come into my garden, my sister, [my] spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.
2 ¶ I sleep, but my heart waketh: [it is] the voice of my beloved that knocketh, [saying], Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, [and] my locks with the drops of the night.
3 I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?
4 My beloved put in his hand by the hole [of the door], and my bowels were moved for him.
5 I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped [with] myrrh, and my fingers [with] sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.
6 I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, [and] was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
7 The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.
8 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I [am] sick of love.
9 ¶ What [is] thy beloved more than [another] beloved, O thou fairest among women? what [is] thy beloved more than [another] beloved, that thou dost so charge us?
10 My beloved [is] white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.
11 His head [is as] the most fine gold, his locks [are] bushy, [and] black as a raven.
12 His eyes [are] as [the eyes] of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, [and] fitly set.
13 His cheeks [are] as a bed of spices, [as] sweet flowers: his lips [like] lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.
14 His hands [are as] gold rings set with the beryl: his belly [is as] bright ivory overlaid [with] sapphires.
15 His legs [are as] pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold: his countenance [is] as Lebanon“white, incense”, excellent as the cedars.
16 His mouth [is] most sweet: yea, he [is] altogether lovely. This [is] my beloved, and this [is] my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”.
CHAPTER 6
1 Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
2 My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
3 I [am] my beloved’s, and my beloved [is] mine: he feedeth among the lilies.
4 ¶ Thou [art] beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah“benevolent; complaisant; pleasing”, comely as Jerusalem“vision of peace”, terrible as [an army] with banners.
5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair [is] as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead“the heap or mass of testimony”.
6 Thy teeth [are] as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and [there is] not one barren among them.
7 As a piece of a pomegranate [are] thy temples within thy locks.
8 There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
9 My dove, my undefiled is [but] one; she [is] the [only] one of her mother, she [is] the choice [one] of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; [yea], the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
10 ¶ Who [is] she [that] looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, [and] terrible as [an army] with banners?
11 I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, [and] to see whether the vine flourished, [and] the pomegranates budded.
12 Or ever I was aware, my soul made me [like] the chariots of Amminadib.
13 Return, return, O Shulamite“peaceable; perfect; that recompenses”; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.
CHAPTER 7
1 How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince’s daughter! the joints of thy thighs [are] like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.
2 Thy navel [is like] a round goblet, [which] wanteth not liquor: thy belly [is like] an heap of wheat set about with lilies.
3 Thy two breasts [are] like two young roes [that are] twins.
4 Thy neck [is] as a tower of ivory; thine eyes [like] the fishpools in Heshbon“invention; industry”, by the gate of Bath-rabbim: thy nose [is] as the tower of Lebanon“white, incense” which looketh toward Damascus“a sack full of blood; the similitude of burning”.
5 Thine head upon thee [is] like Carmel“circumcised lamb; harvest; full of ears of corn”, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king [is] held in the galleries.
6 How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!
7 This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters [of grapes].
8 I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
9 And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth [down] sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.
10 ¶ I [am] my beloved’s, and his desire [is] toward me.
11 Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages.
12 Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, [whether] the tender grape appear, [and] the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.
13 The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates [are] all manner of pleasant [fruits], new and old, [which] I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.
CHAPTER 8
1 O that thou [wert] as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! [when] I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.
2 I would lead thee, [and] bring thee into my mother’s house, [who] would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
3 His left hand [should be] under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.
4 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem“vision of peace”, that ye stir not up, nor awake [my] love, until he please.
5 Who [is] this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth [that] bare thee.
6 ¶ Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love [is] strong as death; jealousy [is] cruel as the grave: the coals thereof [are] coals of fire, [which hath a] most vehement flame.
7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if [a] man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
8 ¶ We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
9 If she [be] a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she [be] a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.
10 I [am] a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
11 Solomon“peaceable; perfect; one who recompenses” had a vineyard at Baal-hamon“who rules a crowd”; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand [pieces] of silver.
12 My vineyard, which [is] mine, [is] before me: thou, O Solomon“peaceable; perfect; one who recompenses”, [must have] a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
13 Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear [it].
14 ¶ Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.
we woke up in lincoln bright and early and hit the road. i kinda wanted to check out omaha, but tom
we woke up in lincoln bright and early and hit the road. i kinda wanted to check out omaha, but tom was ready to move on to a new state, so we kept driving. actually, i think if it were up to tom, we would have driven straight through iowa too but i was having none of that. i mean, when would we ever be in iowa again? i consulted my handy dandy triple a guidebook for points of interest along our route and found two quaint towns to visit.
first up, velkommen to elk horn.
elk horn is located on the western end of iowa a few miles off the interstate. the town is “the largest danish rural settlement in the US.” cool, right? i also love how they have an asian kid on their town website.
elk horn’s main attraction is its authentic danish windmill. back in the day, the townspeople raised a whole bunch of money to take it apart and bring it over from denmark, and even more money to reconstruct it piece by piece.
riveting stuff, right?
you’d think so too, after hours of this:
hfcs in the making…
our second stop in the lovely state of iowa was to the amana colonies which i have to say sounded way cooler in the guidebook.
the amana colonies are a set of seven villages that were home to a german religious sect that lived a communal lifestyle until 1932. i don’t really understand what that means either…but i was hoping it’d be like an amish community. what it turned out to be was a big tourist trap disguised as a cute lil’ village of german themed souvenir shops.
most of the shop names end with “haus” and this one was my favorite haus:
my second fave was the bakery where we purchased our lunch.
i got a turkey sandwich made on homemade hearth oven baked bread with turkey from the amana smokehouse.
it was pretty darn good.
dessert was even better.
i’m closing my eyes in the pic, but what’s important is what is on that plate…
say hello to the lucy brown cookie.
isn’t she gorgeous?
this treat was chosen using the same method i usually apply to purchasing things i know little about, like wine. “if it’s popular, it must be good!”
the crispie in the first pic intrigued me, but as you can see in the second pic, there was only one cookie left- so it had to be good!
oh, and it was! the lucy brown cookie turned out to be a frosted, rich, decadent brownie in the shape of a cookie. there was no fruit in it (maybe one raisin- but i think i imagined that), but it was full of walnuts and chocolate chips.
that cookie was the perfect sweet finish to my time in iowa.
next stop: chi-town!
Here’s a snap of Allie checking out some cute washing machines at Amana (which is pronounced not ah-mah-nah, like I thought, but more like “What a-man-a!”). If only we had washer dryers in our apartments! They would certainly have to be color-coordinated like these ones.
We also got to chat with Thom Filicia, who is quite cute in person and super-nice. Sadly, despite the fact that he touched my arm – twice! – we inexplicably did not take a photo with him. Don’t worry, he said he’d invite us to an event soon. We’ll just have to wait and see if his manager really kept that coaster I wrote my number on… (-Moe)
