The big wedding is a chick flick but again, we were out of movies we wanted to see and it was the most appealing of the leftovers. I went into the movie thinking this is going to be boring but left surprised that it wasn’t that bad. Would I have seen it were we not seeing a movie a week and had nothing else to see? No. Will I buy it on DVD? No. But was it entertaining enough to not make me want to cut myself for enjoyment? Yes.

The movie is about a young couple getting married and the MANY complications that follow in their journey to the altar which include the couple’s parents and siblings. Yup, I think that sums it up. Should you see it in theaters? Sure, if you are 65 (or doing what Sarah and I are). Should you see it on DVD? Sure, if you are 50. Should you see it at all ever? Sure if you are on a desert island with a TV, DVD player and copy of the movie.

Ha, no its not like it was bad, it was good…but let’s be honest, I would not have seen it had it not been for our deal of seeing one movie per week and we had seen everything else.

Big Wedding was okay. That’s the most I can muster. It wasn’t good and it wasn’t God awful. The film felt fractured and like a mash up of multiple movies with no direction. The characters stories were supposed to meet and meld into something beautiful and poignant and having to do with the bonds of family be stronger than the actions of its individuals, blah, blah, blah but it didn’t. The characters are steadfast in their unwillingness to forgive and then in the last five minutes all is right and they are a picture of love, forgiveness and goodwill. I don’t buy it.

The great difference in this movie is that the sexual deviance is done by the older folks, while some of the younger cast members are 30 year old virgins or stand in the background cuing the audience when to laugh with their drop jawed shock expressions. Sarandon makes a valiant effort at saving this movie and she’s the only reason the film can be called good.

I applaud the actors for sticking with it. They tried their best to act a screenplay that clearly had not direction, or theme, or purpose. Very simply, don’t pay to see this, unless older folks getting it on and acting like caricatures in a teen drama is your cup of tea.

My absolute favourite ensemble would have to be the white dress and biker jacket worn by Sienna Miller. She wore a white column dress, gold-studded black leather jacket and clutch, all by Burberry, with a white-gold ear cuff by Genevieve Jones to complete the ensemble. She looks well put together and very chic, while maintaining a punk edge.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy.

Rooney Mara is a long time friend of Givenchy, so she would no doubt be donning one of their most beautiful creations. A white lace dress, trimmed with a little metal and large shoulder pads makes for the perfect Rooney Mara look. Edgy, yet elegant.

Nicole Richie in Topshop

This beautiful detailed dress is perfection…but not on Nicole Richie. Her hair and overly tanned skin do not compliment the dress at all. The dress calls for elegance, and perhaps it was not the best choice considering the theme of the event.

Kristin Stewart in Stella McCartney.

Ahhhh, K Stew. Looking predictable as ever. Yes, she has the perfect “look” (if there ever was one) for a detailed onesie, but maybe it is time for her to mix up her look a little bit. Perhaps lose the extravagant make-up, or let your hair down now and then? Jury is still out on this look.

Kim Kardashian in Givenchy.

Ordinarily this dress would look perfect on someone that isn’t as pregnant as Kim K, sans the ridiculous matching gloves ofcourse. The dress itself is beautiful, but it is just too much because she is pregnant.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior.

I love her. She’s just one beautiful creature. And her style happens to be amazing too! I think Jennifer Lawrence dazzles in her Dior gown. She completed her look with a veil.

Gisele Bundchen in Anthony Vacarello.

Probably one of the most revealing and daring dresses of the night, Gisele Bundchen doesn’t disappoint with showing off her body. The Anthony Vacarello creation looks like it was held together with mostly string and a prayer that it holds out throughout the evening.

Emmy Rossum in Donna Karan Atelier.

Emmy Rossum’s Donna Karan creation warrants a photo from the front and the back. That is how much I love this dress. There is absolutely nothing shameless about this dress, only pure excellence.

Emma Watson in Prabal Gurung.

Oh, the stunning Emma Watson. Her whole look says it all. She’s glamourous, and gorgeous, and completely pulling off this Prabal Gurung dress.

Anne Hathaway in Valentino.

And finally Miss Anne Hathaway. I neither adore, nor hate her. But my oh my does she wear this black 1992 vintage Valentino dress well. It’s risque, but in such a poised way. Hands up to those that would like to slip into this dress and rock it?

Lastly, a big trend amongst the 2013 Met Gala goers this year would have to be the black and gold tapestry/floral trend. Some of them worked, while others…well lets just let the dresses do the talking.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon, with a Philip Treacy headpiece.

An astounding YES to the dress. It fits her beautifully, and yet is not overpowering like many other dresses with floral patterns. However, the situation with the Louis Vuitton velvet tartan thigh high boots needs to be addressed…One can NEVER, EVER wear items that clash like this. As in N E V E R. A dress as beautifully crafted as this should be worn with a beautiful black or gold strappy sandal, not thigh high tartan boots.

Beyonce in Kenzo.

In all honesty, I hate this whole outfit. Since when has it been alright to wear thigh highs (matching or not) with a ball gown? The only positive aspect I can attribute to this near disaster is that the style flatters Beyonce. She is a diva, and this dress screams diva.

Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy.

Strutting her stuff in a vintage Givenchy is every girls dream. Poised and flawless as ever, Amanda Seyfried look beautiful in this backless, floor length dress.

I’m definitely feeling a little envious of all these women wearing such beautiful dresses!

It’s never too late to start acting like a family

Alejandro(Barnes) and Missy (Seyfried) are getting married. Alejandro’s adopted parents Don and Ellie (De Niro and Keaton) have been divorced for years and Don is living with Bebe (Sarandon). Alejandro has managed to keep this secret from his ultra- conservative Colombian birth mother Madonna (Rae). But Madonna has decided, much to everyone’s surprise, to attend the wedding.

This news throws the entire family into chaos and it is decided that Don and Ellie will simply pretend to be married for the weekend that Madonna is visiting. As the family, including the almost 30 year old virgin Jared (Grace) and the recently separated Lyla (Heigl) begin to descend on the family home for the upcoming nuptials hilarity, as they say, ensures.

The opening scenes of the movie between Ellie, Don and Bebe are hilarious and raunchy. De Niro as the funny guy still amazes and delights me, Keaton’s character is not as uptight as she usually plays and Sarandon is, as always, simply glorious.

This family is quirky and dysfunctional in a very ordinary way. The dynamics would be familiar to many of us …..  from the daughter still angry at her father for having an affair to the new in-laws desperate to impress. The young soon to be married couple watch their families seemingly spiral out of control and in trying to keep everyone else happy, find themselves at odds with their own wedding.

There are lots of laughs to be had with some tender, touching moments as well. This is not a thigh slapping, in your face comedy, it is clever comedy. Sure, some of the jokes fall flat but I never thought I would be spending 90 minutes laughing either. The dramatic moments are just enough… nothing too deep but enough to engage you.

The moments shared between Alejandro and his 3 mothers are the best in the movie. He is after all, for the weekend at least, the centre of this entire, crazy family. Although very different, his relationships with each of these women are very special and wonderful to watch.

In contrast, his sister Lyla’s relationships with the men in her life….. her father, husband and brother …. are markedly different. They are also less engaging. But perhaps that has more to do with Heigl than anything else. For the most part, as an actress, I find her particularly dull and a little off-putting. Strange because I loved her in Gray’s Anatomy.

When we throw into the mix Missy’s uptight parents, who have a few secrets of their own and Robin Williams as the local Catholic priest, this movie is for the most part great fun. It’s a nice comedy drama that, even though predictable in parts, is still entertaining. To be honest, with a stellar cast such as this movie boasts, I was expecting much more. The large ensemble cast movie, so popular in recent years, can be a hit or miss affair and while this is a hit, it is only just. I think that’s the problem, I expected too much.

So I suppose you should walk in with no expectations, take the movie for what it is and just enjoy.

10. Bella Heathcote as Emiy St. Aubert and Emile Hirsch as her beloved Valancourt. They meet in the French countryside and fall for each other while playing the lute, singing, reciting poetry, and gazing at mountains and birds and stuff. The theme song of their initial, flowery courtship: “Replay” by Iyaz.

9. Emily frets about her father’s (Adrien Brody’s) poor health—but he assures her that no matter what happens to him, God is looking out for her. Scenes of Emily gazing dewy-eyed at the beautiful French Alps to the tune of “Don’t You Worry Child” by Swedish House Mafia.

8. Bitchy, gold-digging aunt Madame Cheron (Helena Bonham Carter) does not want Emily to marry Valancourt because she’s heard through the grapevine that he’s not rich or noble enough. Mme Cheron then marries the shady Italian gangster, Signor Montoni (Russell Crowe)—because he’s got mad money (how’d he come by it? Doesn’t matter, got rich!). Scene of Mme. Cheron at her wedding, to the tune of “Buyou” by Keri Hilson.

7. Imprisoned in Montoni’s castle at Udolpho, Emily keeps hearing this haunting lute music beneath her window. (Something like “Grenadier and the Lady.”) Who could it be? Is it Valancourt? Nope. Turns out it’s just the poor, hapless dweeb, Msr du Pont (Jon Heder), who spends the rest of the book trying to get with Emily, and keeps getting friend-zoned hardcore. Poor, awkward Du Pont.

6. Things get ugly at Udolpho. Emily fears for her aunt’s life, and has every reason to believe that Montoni has killed her, and she, Emily, is next. Russell Crowe’s badass theme song: “Getting Away with Murder” by Papa Roach.

5. One of the best couples in the book: ditzy handmaid Annette (Amanda Seyfried) who can’t stop running her mouth and is afraid of her own shadow, and her lover, the dashing house-servant Ludovico (Orlando Bloom):

4. The “Mysteries” are unveiled, and claws are coming out. Turns out Emily’s enigmatic late ancestress, the Marchioness de Villeroi (Keira Knightley), was murdered: her husband’s (Eric Bana’s) illicit lover, Signora Laurentini (Angelina Jolie) persuaded him to poison her. In the aged Laurentini’s deathbed flashbacks (she’s now a nun known as Sister Agnes), scenes of murder are shown to the tune of “Girlfight” by Brooke Valentine.

3. Emily’s befriends the young, charming-but-slightly-vapid Lady Blanche (Dakota Fanning), whose fiancé is their neighbor, the Baron’s son Monsieur St Foix (Josh Hutcherson). Pretty much the only thing that ever goes wrong for these two is when St Foix gets injured and their wedding has to be delayed. Nauseatingly cute. Obviously, their theme song is Selena Gomez, “Love You Like A Love Song.”

2. When Emily and Valancourt’s relationship is on the rocks, the elderly, batty-but-good-hearted servant Theresa (Betty White), a loyal friend to both Emily and Valancourt, acts as middle-man. Just imagine Betty saying this, one of my favorite lines: “Why should all this be? … How much you are alike in your tempers and ways, and, that, if you were married, you would be the happiest couple in the whole province—then what is there to prevent your marrying? Dear dear! To see how some people fling away their happiness and then cry and lament about it, just as if it was not their own doing, and as if there was more pleasure in wailing and weeping, than in being at peace. Learning, to be sure, is a fine thing, but, if it teaches folk no better than that, why I had rather be without it; if it would teach them to be happier, I would say something to it, then it would be learning and wisdom too.”

1. BEST OF ALL: the heartbreak theme. Valancourt’s angst-song would be “She’s So High Above Me.” Because, basically, that’s the whole reason he and Emily break up. Long story short: during her captivity at Udolpho, he gets in with the wrong crowd in Paris, gets into some bad stuff, and Emily loses respect for him when she finds out… But will they get back together again?! You’ll just have to read it. Or, wait for my super awesome movie to come out.

As usual, hemlines were mixed and there was an abundance of pattern play (Kim K, Amanda Seyfried). Our favorite designers were featured by our favorite celebrities.

Is it just me, or were there as many wacky outfits as there were glamorous? Bizarre ruffles, shredded hems, satin plaid and a few styles that should have been forgotten in the ’90s (Oh, she’s just being Miley). Then again, the theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture” …And I thoroughly believe punk is not dead!

A few trends to note include la petite robe noir and a glimpse of metallic. Joan Smalls, Michelle Williams and Florence Welch are just a few women who stuck with the dark shade. Metallic trimmed a number of dresses, including Taylor Swift’s by J. Mendel and Gisele Bundchen’s very-mini dress. Beyonce’s gown sent a nostalgic shiver down my spine, reminding me of her gorgeous black and gold Emilio Pucci design from 2011.

Cut-outs were another obvious trend. Black dresses worn by Emma Watson, Miranda Kerr, Carey Mulligan, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Hart featured the trend, along with multiple others. Jessica Biel opted for a two-piece, midriff baring ensemble by Giambattista Valli, and Gwenyth Paltrow had an illusion cut-out below her collar bone. Jessica Alba, always a favorite of mine, wore a metallic hued dress with cut outs below her neck.

Questionable decisions aside, I am plenty impressed with a variety of looks. Here’s a selection of the best dressed ladies at the 2013 Costume Institute Gala.

Some of the stars that attended the opening in New York yesterday include, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Lily Collins, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Nina Dobrev, Emma Roberts, Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, Kerry Washington, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Rooney and Kate Mara, and many more!

A glance through the galleries of the event reveal one hot mess after another. I barely managed to scrape together a collection of best dressed attendees, although in this case, I took basically anything that caught my eye for any reason other than acute horror.

Rooney’s dress was true to her style but the lacey draping, unique shoulders and waist-cinching zipper made it special. Rooney’s hair and makeup also look beautiful, which I appreciated, especially compared to some of the other clowns in attendance.

Stars hit the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Costume Institute’s annual Gala in New York.  This year’s theme was Punk: Chaos and Couture, and celebrities hit both ends of the spectrum.

CHAOS: At first glance, Queen Bey’s Givenchy get up was less than flattering with a tacky belt and what seems to be a patent leather bustier. The matching boot-glove combo is too much, but the train view brings a little redemption.

COUTURE: Anne Hathaway killed the Punk theme with her new blonde hair and vintage Valentino gown.

COUTURE: The always stylish Nina Dobrev mixes feminine with rocker in this Monique Lhuillier tulle and leather playsuit.

CHAOS: Miley has a great body for this Marc Jacobs netted gown; but frankly, her hair is channeling Cynthia, as in the doll in 90′s Nickelodeon cartoon, Rugrats.

CHAOS: This is an ill fitting Dolce&Gabbana dress that would otherwise compliment Katy Perry’s statement crown and earrings. Her inspiration? A rebel from history- Joan of Arc.

COUTURE: T Swift stole the show in this J. Mendel gown with lace cutouts and an ornate collar.

CHAOS: Ashley Greene is always beautiful, but the design on Marchesa gown gives an odd shape to the slender actress.

COUTURE: Sofia Vergara shows that Marchesa could hit the mark at Met. She didn’t follow the theme, but we don’t mind.

COUTURE & CHAOS: Kanye dressed to the nines in Givenchy, but we have mixed feelings about Kim’s floral selection from the same designer. While the slit flatters her legs, the rest of her body gets lost in the busy pattern.

COUTURE: Kate Bosworth’s Balmain dress is a little more Bollywood than Punk, but it’s still adorable.

COUTURE: Rosie Huntington Whitely looks gorgeous in Gucci.

CHAOS: We know that J-Law is die-hard Dior, but this dress is disappointing.

CHAOS: Christina Ricci is the definition of hot mess in Vivienne Westwood. Hair and makeup look great, but ditch the plaid.

COUTURE: Nicole Richie’s shockingly Storm-esque gray hair is awesomely paired with an unexpectedly elegant Topshop gown.

COUTURE: Seyfried opted to defy the punk theme. The “Les Mis” actress is a stunner in this Givenchy gown regardless.

COUPLE COUTURE: Olivia Wilde’s ab-baring Calvin Klein ensemble paired with an especially handsome husband, Jason Sudeikis …perfection.

CHAOS: Madonna took punk to another level with this costume by Givenchy. Key Word: costume

COUTURE: Rooney Mara donned Givenchy the right way.

I saw a lot of bad choises and awful outfits. Everytime I don’t understand why when you can choose whatever you want and you have a whole team of stylist you choose something so wrong. But I don’t want to be negative and faultfinding, so here’s some pics of the looks that I’ve loved.

Rooney Mara: Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci

I really like her with this dress, that it isn’t easy to wear. For her tiny body, it’s perfect… everything in this look is actually perfect.

Anne Hathaway: Valentino Haute Couture

Ok, I admit, I’m not an impartial judge with Anne, because I love her. But how can you not love her? She’s always gorgeous. Any doubt? Impossible, she’s stunning also with this  new platinum blonde short hairstyle.

Katy Perry: Dolce & Gabbana F/W 2013

This is really a particular outfit with all that shine and bling, and the crown and the big earrings. It could be too much, but in the end it isn’t, all the elements match up perfectly: the dress, the accessories, the makeup, the hairstyle. Approved!

Amanda Seyfried: Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci

I’m not totally convinced by the pattern and the colors of the dress, but I like the train, I like how the dress fits her and I love her.

Sarah Jessica Parker: Giles Deacon & Philip Treacy headpiece

I can’t not even watch at the dress, because I’m totally absorbed by the headpiece. She has taken the punk theme seriously and this mohawk headpiece is stunning. I want it tooGi! Well done Miss Parker!

Cara Delevingne: Burberry

Lately I’m becoming obsessed with this girl: she’s so beautiful and I love her style. This look is wonderful: I love the smokey eyes, the hairstyle, the dress with all those shining gold studs. The right mix of punk and class.

Blake Lively: Gucci Première

I don’t know how it can be possible but she is always glowing. This gown makes me think to birds, but I like it. If I was a boy, I would fall in love with her immediately.
