Greg Koukl of Stand to Reason wants Christians to be “ambassadors for Christ”. What

Greg Koukl of Stand to Reason wants Christians to be “ambassadors for Christ”. What’s that?

Here is a dictionary definition of ambassador:

1. a diplomatic official of the highest rank, sent by one sovereign or state to another as its resident representative (ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary).

2. a diplomatic official of the highest rank sent by a government to represent it on a temporary mission, as for negotiating a treaty.

3. a diplomatic official serving as permanent head of a country’s mission to the United Nations or some other international organization.

4. an authorized messenger or representative. Abbreviation: Amb., amb.

Greg Koukl says that a good ambassador needs 3 things: knowledge, wisdom and character.

Greg writes:

I’ve heard it said that sometimes you will be the only living Bible that anyone can read. Well, that’s what it means to be an ambassador. You will speak for Christ. One way or another, for good or for ill, you will speak for Him if you are a follower of Jesus Christ. So we want to strengthen good representatives, and we know that takes emphasis in three areas.

One are to strengthen as an ambassador is knowledge. In other words, you’ve got to know a few things that your sovereign wants you to represent to the rest of the world. So you’ve got to have this knowledge base.

Secondly, you’ve got to communicate that knowledge in a way that is sensitive to the people that you’re sent to. You need to understand their way of thinking. You need to understand their language after a fashion. You must be diplomatic, tactical after a fashion. So there is a certain wisdom, the right use of knowledge, that’s necessary for you to be an effective ambassador.

A good ambassador, any ambassador, packages that knowledge and strategy in the manner of delivery in himself or herself. It’s all wrapped up in an individual, and if that individual is offensive, if that individual is a bad representative, it doesn’t matter that the knowledge and tactics are sound. If the individual is wrong then the message loses its force. This is why we emphasize not just knowledge, not just wisdom, but also character. You must package the entire message in you personally so that you can be an effective, accurate, and virtuous representative or ambassador for Jesus Christ.

I think that a good ambassador for Christ needs to be motivated, as well. A good ambassador is concerned when some people have false beliefs about God’s existence, character and purposes. An ambassador cannot stand by and do nothing while God’s reputation is diminished in public. It is this concern for God as a friend that drives people to study apologetics, as well as theology, science, history, etc. We want to know what God is like, what he’s done and how we can show these things to be true.

The mission of Christian ambassadors

Consider 2 Corinthians 5:11-21, especially verses 11 and 2:

11Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

12We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.

13If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you.

14For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

15And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

16So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

20We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

This passage about reconciling God and man is one of my favorites in the Bible.

God has chosen us to communicate on his behalf to people who don’t know him. An ambassador doesn’t treat God as a means to achieving happiness, security, health and wealth in this life. Nor is the ambassador’s job to let other people be happy without a relationship with the real God who is really there. The ambassador has a responsibility to explain God’s existence, character and purposes to those who are still ignorant of him. And that takes effort. God is not interested in making his human “pets” happy. He’s given us a task to accomplish – a task that may well consume a good deal of time, effort and money. A task that may diminish our happiness by making us different and unpopular.

Apologetics demonstrates your friendship with God

I often think about how to test others to see whether they are genuine Christians or not. This can be done for friendship or even when testing a prospective mate. A subjective “Christian” who invents their own view of God subjectively, using intuition and emotions, is not going to put themselves second for God and serve him as an ambassador. Instead, they’ll think that a relationship with God really means projecting their own desire for happiness onto God. “God” is there to make them feel happy, not to make demands on them.

And if a person doesn’t want a relationship with God as a real person, they won’t relate to you as a real person, either. If a person doesn’t think that God has purposes and feelings distinct from their own, they won’t think you have purposes and feelings distinct from their own. If a person thinks that God’s purpose is to make them happier, then they’ll think that your purpose is to make them happier. If a person is not willing to sacrifice their interests for God’s interests, they aren’t going to sacrifice their interests for your interests, either.

Hey guys this is Jimbercane posting. First off all, I would like to wish everyone of you, Happy Thanksgiving! Traditionally, in this time of year, it is the time to give thanks for the harvest and gratitude in general. Anyways, let move on with some updates. First off all, there is a new Action, and it’s called Dance. Since this Action has been added, the organization of all of the other rest has also been modifyied to fit them all in. I think this format will be perfect, because in the future when some other Actions are added, there will be room for them all.

Finally, to promote her upcoming concerts in Planet Cazmo, Allison Iraheta made a video about it! Here it is!:

The notion of celebrity has always intrigued me.

They receive so much in return for being beautiful and talented. Money. Fame. Gifts. Attention. They are in a position that is so sought after and so revered. People actually care what celebrities do on a daily basis and will go to surprising lengths to imitate them, from where they get their coffee to what brand of jeans they’re wearing. As you know, there are even websites dedicated to tracking celebrities’ every move, ahem, Perez Hilton. I’ll admit, I’m definitely not all innocent here… not in the least.

When you think about this obsession we have, it’s actually kind of creepy. It’s pretty much a fact of life for celebrities and I say: celebs should take these lemons and make lemonade. Sure, we may be stalking celebs’ every move, but why not turn this weird cultural phenomenon into something positive? Many celebs have already made the leap.

When the whole world is watching, why not do something that’s actually useful to society? It was so refreshing to see Nicole Kidman in the news last month, not because she dyed her hair or wore a scandalous dress, but because she headed to Washington in her role as a UN ambassador to support legislation aimed at tackling violence against women.

She actually accused Hollywood of contributing to violence against women by portraying them as sex objects.

The Guardian reported that when asked whether the film industry had a negative influence on the way films portray women, Kidman replied “Probably,” before saying that she refused to take roles that portrayed women as weak sexual objects. “I can’t be responsible for all of Hollywood, but I can certainly be responsible for my own career.”

Kidman has worked for the UN since 1994 when she became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), and has represented the UN Development Fund for Women (Unifem) since 2006.

An article in the Belfast Telegraph said: “Using Nicole Kidman to front a campaign — no matter how worthwhile — really does call into question the whole dubious notion of goodwill ambassadors. These unpaid worthies, according to the UN, “use their fame to draw attention to important issues.””

So what? Why diminish the fact that these hot commodities could be making money doing something stupid but chose to volunteer their time doing something worthwhile? Sure, their publicist is probably thrilled because it will make them more likeable. Sure, it may help them land that role in the next blockbuster. But seriously, who cares? The point is that they are doing something good and if it’s raising awareness for issues like violence against women, why complain?

According to the American Free Press, Kidman told Congress that violence against women and girls was “perhaps the most systematic, widespread human rights violation in the world.”

“I am far from an expert, I rely on the people I’ve met to make the case,” admitted the actress, adding that it “recognizes no borders, no race or class.”

The International Violence Against Women Act is currently under debate. If passed, it could greatly influence US foreign policy in relations with countries where there is a lack of women’s rights.

AFP also explained that Kidman said systematic rape in ethnic conflict, forced marriage at an early age and domestic violence required treatment “not with a box of band aids but with a comprehensive, well-funded approach that acknowledges that women’s rights are human rights.”

It’s clear that the beautiful bombshell is more than just a pretty face and is actually using her celebrity for good. So will we ever be able to focus on all the good that celebs are doing instead of constantly gossiping about the superficial aspects of their lives? I doubt it. But maybe we can, at least, have a balance of both, and that’s better than nothing.

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. – 2 Corinthians 5:20

An Ambassador is someone who represents their country in another land. We have ambassadors for us right now in many other countries, and other countries have ambassadors for them here in the U.S.A. An ambassador represents their country and what they stand for. You’re typically not going to be chosen to be an ambassador for your country if you can’t hold a good rep for yourself. I mean, what if the U.S. had a dude from the K.K.K. be an ambassador for our country. First, we would be in a war right now with that country he was staying in. Second, the country wouldn’t think highly of us.

We’re called to be ambassadors for Christ. Now, I know there is no country called Christ, but there is the person we’re called to represent. In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul goes on talking about this message of reconciliation (a message of being brought back to God). He says: “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”

God was making a message of bringing mankind back to him through the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. But that’s not all. God committed to us that same message to give to everyone. Right after that statement Paul says in verse 20: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

You see it? He called us Christ’s ambassadors, or the ones who represent Christ. Then he says, “…as though God were making his appeal through us.” In other words, we’re God’s representatives so he can share his message using us. That message is to “be reconciled to God“. The only way to be brought back to God is through Christ’s death on the cross, and accepting that as supreme in your life.

Be a legitamite representation of Christ to the world! He’s called us to it.

Hey guys this is Jimbercane posting. I was on Twitter, and noticed that Planet Cazmo updated theirs. They mentioned, that the winner of the best rated room contest will also win a Nintendo Wii! Plus they also mentioned, that there will be other contests from which you will be able to win Astroyboy (For the Nintendo DS.) and Ben 10! I am still not sure what the Ben 10 prize will be, because there are even toys based on this series. Also, the days seem to be getting shorter now… Just when I was making this post, I looked outside, and noticed that it was already dark! It was only 4 o’ clock when this happened! I hope snow will be coming soon! Everyone seems to be saying that it’s cold outside, but in my point of view I don’t really feel that cold. Anyways, that’s all for now.

Oof. Been too long since I posted, but I’ve been busier than hell. Had meetings all day on Thursda

Oof. Been too long since I posted, but I’ve been busier than hell. Had meetings all day on Thursday, then therapy that evening, worked Friday and immediately after dinner, drove out to Statesville for the Ambassador’s soccer tournament.

Therapy was pretty good, for being therapy. We talked about mostly mellow stuff, which was kind of a nice break from the gut wrenching stressful sessions we’d been having. We did discuss our reading homework; mine had been the first chapter from the Courage to Heal, a book about women recovering from childhood sexual abuse, and The Scientist’s was from the Mayo clinic on depression.

I liked what I’d read, and had a discussion with Minna about it, mentioning that I planned to get a copy of the book for myself off of half.com. Minna warned me that the book is very triggering, which I figured would be the case. When I said as much to V, she said she didn’t think it was a good idea to purchase the book until after the Christmas Extravaganza. She has a really good point, so I am taking her advice and will wait.

The Scientist told us that he definitely saw himself 4yrs ago was when he was laid off, in the reading, which was expected. He also said that he sees a bit of me in a few things as well since my knee was ruined. I can understand that, but I also think I’ve come a long way since it first happened, and have adapted pretty well. V said that with the way this year has been, she would be shocked and worried if I didn’t show some depressive symptoms. She doesn’t think I’m in any sort of crisis, or that I’m clinically depressed or anything, just that this year has sucked, and I’m working my way back out of it. That pretty much sums it up, yeah.

One of his main bullet points was my occasionally being “short tempered.” I kinda had to laugh at that a little, and I pointed out that in his own words, I’m the one with the easy, solid relationship with the kids. Which left the fact that if I’m short tempered, it’s only with him! But wouldn’t that stand to reason, after telling him last August that I wanted a divorce, doing the legal separation thing for 6 months, trying again, having it crash again this August, and now being in counseling? It just seems like a “duh” that if I’m going to be bitchy, it’d be with the one person in the family that I don’t get along with, ya know? But again, it’s nothing insurmountable, and if we’re going to rebuild this friendship, it’s going to have rough patches.

The trek to Statesville was easy. We listened to music and the Ambassador worked on his project that was due on Monday (grrrr). The Ambassador needed to be on the pitch by 7am for warm-ups, in the balmy 36 degree weather, but this is nothing new to us. A few minutes into the second half, there was a colossal collision and the goalie went down; another guy then nailed the Ambassador, who flipped over his goalie, and landed, rolling to wind up face down on the ground.

Now, when this happens, it takes the guys a few minutes to remember what day it is, what their names are, how they got on the ground, and so on. So I wasn’t really concerned when the Ambassador didn’t move. However, he kept not moving. The kid who hit him had dropped to the ground and I learned later was apologizing. (There was no foul; it was an accident, and we all knew it.) The kid called to the ref and the coach, who both ran over. Still nothing. Hmm. At this point, I was a bit concerned, but the Scientist moves faster than my gimpy-ass self, so he headed out onto the field too. Still nothing. OK, now I was a tad worried. I set Alejandro back into his bag and went out myself. I was half way across the field when they were able to get him up and took him to the bench, and had called the EMT who was there for the day.

Poor kid was dazed enough that he didn’t even notice me picking blades of grass out of the corners of his eyes, his ears, and his jersey. The EMT checked him over and diagnosed an AC sprain in his right shoulder, which was the first thing to hit the ground. Loooovely. Once he got his bearings, he was dead set on playing the other two games of the tournament. Typical stubborn boy, of course. After much consultation with Nik, the Ambassador’s athletic trainer, Grant, the team’s athletic trainer, the EMT, and us together, we did allow him to make the decision. I didn’t like it, and I didn’t agree with the decision, but I let it happen. We iced it for over an hour, drugged him well with pain killers and anti-inflammatories, and immobilized the shoulder with Ace wraps.

He’s still in a world of hurt, but having an ortho consult at this point is worthless. With the initial inflammation, any true eval couldn’t happen. You just cannot assess a joint that’s still that painful. So we’re giving it til Monday to settle and then make a decision to either rehab or take him into the doc.

Another post coming later or tomorrow, but before I go, I’ll leave my friends with a few of my better “lousy mom” moments of late:

[In a text message, to the Professor]

“No threesomes until you’re 21.”

[Said to the Ambassador, while wrapping his shoulder before school yesterday]

“If your stupid friends know about your injury and decide to be “funny” and hit your shoulder, please remember that you aren’t supposed to move the joint. Hit them with your left hand.”

[Text exchange with the Artist in which she was rolling her eyes about the kindergarten level instruction she’s been receiving in college bio]

Her: “And today, we learned about om-nee-vores, and car-nee-vores, and herb-ee-vores!”

Me: “You can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.”

[Text exchange with the Artist as she got out of class today]

Her: “Aaaah. Early release.”

Me: “That’s what he said…and why she broke up with him!”

Happy Tuesday, all!

The last ABAA meeting for the year is nearly upon us — 8 Dec 2009. The topic of conversation will be ‘what is a business analyst’s role in an agile world’?

At first I thought this would be a very interesting conversation but the more I thought about it the more I thought it was a little naive to be asking the question in this way. Is there an actual role? … see for yourself . . .

Kanban

Prescribes no formal roles

ZenAgile

Samurai – the defender of the project

Roshi – the project lead, teacher and mentor

Sensei – the team’s mentor, leader and users’ champion

Team – multi-disciplinary where its members are chosen based on need

Scrum

Scrum Master – protector and champion of the team from The Powers That Be

Product Owner – customer representative and stack prioritiser

Team – multi-disciplinary based on need

Extreme Programming (XP)

Tracker - measures and communicates the team’s progress

Coach – like the Sensei in ZenAgile this is a supporting role that helps a team stay on process and help the team learn

Tester – helps the customer define and write acceptance tests for user stories in the same way a Product Owner might do in Scrum

Customer - defines what is the right product to build, determines the order in which features will be built, and makes sure the product actually work

Programmer - implements the code to support the user stories

Programmer administrator - manages the programmer environment

DSDM [1]

Executive Sponsor – commits appropriate funds and resources

Visionary – initialises the project by ensuring that essential requirements are found early on. The Visionary has the most accurate perception of the business objectives of the system and the project. Another task is to supervise and keep the development process in the right track.

Ambassador User – the knowledge of user community into the project, ensures that the developers receive enough amount of user’s feedback during the development process.

Advisor User – the one who represents important users’ viewpoints

Project Manager – manages the project in general

Technical Coordinator – designs the system architecture and controls the technical quality in the project

Team Leader – ensures that the team works effectively as a whole.

Developer – interprets the system requirements and model it including developing the deliverable code and build the prototypes

Tester - checks the correctness in a technical extents by performing some testings. Tester will have to give some comments and documentation.

Scribe – gathers and records the requirements, agreements, and decisions made in every workshop

Facilitator – manages the workshops progress, acts as a motor for preparation and communication.

RUP

Well, it has over 30 roles … so let’s not go there

If the essence of agile is simplicity then there’s certainly something wrong with some of these ways of working. The most striking thing in all of these is the lack of an actual, dedicated, business analysis role. There are certainly elements of a standard BA in DSDM’s Scribe and Facilitator roles. The Tester and Tracker roles in XP could also be done by someone with a BA background. Craig Brown of Better Projects has even suggested that a BA could undertake the role of the Product Owner in Scrum. But Scrum, ZenAgile and Kanban essentially take the most appropriate people with the most appropriate skills in order to acomplish a specific task or activity. In these, there is obvious room for a BA role to lead or follow, but no defined role for a BA to play as it’s task dependent.

So what is a business analyst’s role in an agile world? Just like there is no PM role in agile there is also no actual BA role either. In some areas that focus more on software engineering there aren’t even any standard analyst roles but moreover a focus on eliciting customer needs directly. It means that in some agile projects there may not be a perceived need to involve an analyst at all.

In reality, though, someone needs to assist with the following:

Understanding users’ needs, wants, expectations, capabilities and attitudes

Communicating and documenting those needs

Translating those needs to those who will implement the project

Ensuring that the output meets the needs of users and the strategic goals of the project and, moreover, the organisation as a whole

This reinforces that skills in business analysis are important for everyone in the project and not just a single role as is prevalent in traditional waterfall projects. It suggests that everyone, from the project lead, samurai or scrum master, should have these skills.

So what is a business analyst’s role in an agile world? There is no BA role. But everyone should definitely have a business analysts skills.

AP/Christopher Bodeen—Washington’s ambassador to Beijing hit out Friday at negative U.S. media coverage of President Barack Obama’s visit to China, saying it failed to take into account important progress on many issues.

Although producing no breakthroughs on key issues, Obama’s first state visit to the Asian giant that ended Wednesday was heralded by both sides as a success.

The trip was the top news story in China, drawing strong interest from the Chinese public who, surveys suggest, are largely positive in their view of the American president.

However, much of the U.S. media coverage was strongly negative, accusing Obama of failing to gain concessions on key issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and climate change, as well as being weak on human rights.

Ambassador Jon Huntsman said the reports missed the fact that the visit had yielded important progress on cooperation in areas such as clean energy, military-to-military exchanges and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons.

“I attended all those meetings that President Obama had with Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao,” Huntsman said, referring to the Chinese president and premier.

“I’ve got to say some of the reporting I saw afterward was off the mark. I saw sweeping comments about things that apparently weren’t talked about, when they were discussed in great detail in the meetings,” he said.

Huntsman made the comments during a question-and-answer session with Chinese and American students attending an international relations program at elite Peking University.

He said criticism about limited Chinese exposure for Obama’s remarks at a town hall-style meeting with students in Shanghai failed to consider the ubiquity of the Internet and blogging in China, where 350 million people use the Web.

“Go check some time and see how messages bounce around from Web site to Web site and blogger to blogger for a very long period of time and you’ll get a sense of what the communication revolution is all about,” Huntsman said.

Hey guys this is Jimbercane posting. Today before I logged onto Planet Cazmo, I noticed that the banner for Kate Earl’s upcoming concerts had changed. It now had David Archuleta on it. I waited for the next slide, and it said that Kate Earl will be performing in Planet Cazmo on the given date, but back to back with David Archuleta! So guys if you haven’t gotten that David Archuleta Concert Ticket, here is another chance!

For the concerts details, look at the post called ‘New Cazmo Of The Week & A Couple Of Upcoming Events’. I know it says Kate Earl Concert information, but that doesen’t matter, because the details on that banner are the exact timings in which David will perform Back-To-Back with Kate Earl. That banner was a little old that’s all.

The semester may be winding down, but the social events keep coming. Last week, I had the pleasure of dining with Marc Nathanson, next U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic (if confirmed), and Betty King, U.S. Ambassador to the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva (should be confirmed any day now). Since they are both political appointees, they spoke about their plans for integrating public diplomacy into their positions, and the recent two weeks they spent in “Ambassador boot camp”/ “Charm School.”

The following day, there was a morning meeting with Nic Hailey, Counsellor – Political, Press and Public Affairs for the British Embassy, Washington. He spoke about the Embassy’s “Know before you go” campaign and other recent PD efforts. I’ll get some notes from his talk posted in a few days.

This week, I’m looking forward to a panel with Dame Barbara Hayes (Consul General for the UK), Julian Braithwaite (Director of UK Foreign Office Consular Directorate) and Richard Morris (Regional Director for Consular Services for North America and Canada for the Foreign Office).
