Photo #114:  Tracks I found on the Swinging Bridge trail between Bridwell and the bridge.  This was taken in the morning before the girls started using the trail.  The reason I was at camp was for The Great Amazing Race Event for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors – Girl Scouts. 

We had a great time at The Great Amazing Race.  It was cold, but if you dressed in layers you stayed pretty warm.  I had Alaska and Egypt as the stops along the race route.  In Alaska they were at Denali National Park.  They had to construct an Eskimo yo-yo and try to master the use of the yo-yo.  Each team member (grouped in pairs) had to try their hand at the yo-yo.  Alaska was my morning rotation.  I had help outside for the dog sleds, the transportation from Alaska to their next location.  We had snow saucers with ropes.  They had to have one in the sled and one to pull.  The transportation to Alaska was by rocket.  The rockets were those cheap rubber band type from Oriental Trading.  Before leaving they had to unscramble words and tell me what the next location was to receive the envelope.  We cleaned up and got ready for the afternoon activity.

Egypt was after lunch.  To get to the location, they had to make a train out of cardboard boxes.  Inside they had to make a pyramid out of air-dry clay.  We had a 5 inch by 5 inch card for them to make it on.  I proved aluminum foil so it would not stick to the tables.   Once I approved the structure then they had to finger out the clue by solving a puzzle written in Egyptian symbols.  I handed them an envelope and they used the helicopter balloons to leave for the next destination.  I had a helicopter pad near one of the cabins where the dropped off the helicopters and tickets.  They then hiked to the next location. 

Pyramids in progress.  Some teams did great on teamwork, some not so hot.  I had to tell them teamwork was the key.  Some took a long time since one only worked on it .  I let them be since it was a race.  This made them stay longer and it was ok with me since I was instructed to keep them as long as I could.  I left camp around 5 p.m. after we cleaned the Craft House.  I had a little help in the afternoon.  I really needed more people, but I had to do with what I had.  I could hardly talk by the time I left.  I had to talk over them all day.  The afternoon session I had to tell them to let me talk to one group at a time.  They would not listen so I had to stop them so they could hear me.  They kept bugging me when I was talking to other groups.  I know it was a race, but they really needed to take their turn.  I had pyramids, puzzles, and instructions for departure so I was busy the entire time.  Some still didn’t listen.  Oh well!!!

I’m one of the fans of Efren Penaflorida. I think he’s the greatest Filipino in my time.   However, there’s something about the outgoing ambassador of the US that sort of identifies her as being Pinoy. I don’t know, I’m just sort of a fan of her too.

There was never an ambassador from the United States whom I cannot think of as being more Filipino than Amb. Kristie Kenney.   Upon checking in her official blogsite: (http://blogs.america.gov/kenney/author/kenneyka/)  , Kenney served as the top diplomat in the Philippines since 2006.

I remember I covered her first few days when she was appointed to the US Embassy in Manila by former President Bush and her former boss, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.   One of my beats was the Department of Foreign Affairs so it was just natural that I covered the embassy.

I dreaded covering US ambassadors and officials because their security was tighter than President Arroyos. The previous ambassador (I forgot who, I think it was Ricciardone) was snobbish and unapproachable.

Kenney was different.

The first time I covered her was one of the US Embassy’s trip Los Banos Laguna. I think she visited one of the projects there by her government. I expected the worst and I thought that interviewing her was going to be difficult.

I was surprised that after the event, we were able to interview her immediately. What came next was quite startling too. After getting her soundbites, there was a brief moment of interaction. It was not one of those pr mixers where there was a chance to interview the VIP in an informal setting.

She was just there so I took the opportunity to ask her about her background.  I remember asking her if she was a Republican. I didn’t think she answered it directly but she told me that she was a career public servant ever since.  Her diplomatic experience impressed me, although I forgot what countries she served in, just check out her blog.

Anyway, I asked her other personal questions which she answered always with a smile. After our conversation, I felt like I was talking to another Filipino. The thought just went by though.

Since then, I always manage to see the lady diplomat in every television event, every newspaper headline, magazine features, and even UAAP games.

I can’t believe she was a big Philippine college hoops fan. I do remember that she told me she liked basketball, but I always thought the NBA was more of her thing.  I see her in awarding ceremonies of the UAAP and it was remarkable.

Just this year, I saw her playing tennis and approached her and asked if I and my former fiancé could take a picture. She obliged and even joked that she didn’t look good after playing.  After our training session, we quickly went to Kenney and posed.

The qualities of a Filipino that I saw in Kenney was basically this: she was accommodating, she entertained people (even if I think we were already annoying), and she answered every question with a smile.

I dunno if other reporters had a different experience but that’s how I remember her. In a way, she became a figurehead in Philippine politics too.  She was warm but of course, a lot of people would still see her in a different way since she serves the US. The rallies outside the embassy would be evidence enough. Hehe

But that’s how I see her and it saddens me quite bit that she will be replaced by President Obama. I hope she goes back here though. I haven’t seen a diplomat that is genuinely or at least tries to be concerned about the country where he/she is assigned to as much as Kenney.

Have you ever wondered at this verse? So many preachers have concluded ignorantly, that this verse indicates that we as Christians must take our promises by force and be aggressive in our walk dominating everything we come across.

[16] Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

This teaching is getting more and more prevalent in the church where Christians are being taught that you must take the bull by the horns and demand what rightfully belongs to you. We, as Christians are described as pilgrims, aliens, strangers and people who are just passing through.

What did Paul describe us as in 2 Corinthians 5.20?

2Cor.5

[20] Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Ambassadors? What is an ambassador and what is his main purpose as an ambassador?

1·· a diplomat of the highest rank; accredited as representative from one country to another. 2·· an informal representative. “An ambassador of good will.”

An ambassador represents the one that has sent him. He is an example of all the good that the one sending him represents. Does an ambassador  set up shop and buy a house and set down roots in the country he is “visiting”? No. He isn’t staying in the country to which he was sent, but is there for a certain amount of time to do his work and go back home. He doesn’t run for government, he doesn’t fight in wars and he doesn’t get involved with the everyday life of a citizen that lives there. The Chinese Christians have a saying that would fit quite perfectly here:

Life is a bridge, you don’t build houses on bridges.

Now for Matt. 11.12, what does this verse mean if we are to be as harmless as doves? It means simply this: The Gospel forces itself upon man’s minds. It makes the world take notice and the world does not have the power to resist it. This is why there has been so many attempts to destroy the Bible, remove Jesus from society and pervert Christianity. Unfortunately for the world, you will never get rid of Jesus, the Bible or Christianity. God has established His word over all the earth and nothing will make it disappear from it. No matter what attempts are made to rid the world of Jesus, He just keeps on coming back and forcing Himself upon the minds of the human race.  Why do you suppose? Because He is pursuing you! He loves you and won’t stop until He can’t pursue you any more. Stop running…for in running away from God you end up running right back into Him.

Okay. Every once in a while, I experience something that prompts me to ‘drop that stupid, irritating voice’ i use to write on my blog and ‘just get real’. The ghd Style Lounge – which i was privileged enough to attend on Friday evening – is one such brand activation which has prompted such drastic action. In all seriousness – “srsly y’all” – this event blew my mind. “O RLY?” i hear you say. “Howcome y’ulz?” I hear you say. I’ll attempt to do justice to the sheer delight that was having my makeup done by Benefit, my hair styled by 2 ghd Angels, then being styled by Accessorize and being given a remote control with which to shoot myself. Not in the foot, but on an infinity curve that had been set up, “just like a real-life photo shoot”. Oh my word. Oh my hat.

Once you got your makeup did, you had a little more Krone before heading over to the Style Stations (see above) to have your hair done by 2 lovely ghd Angels. Since my hair is naturally straight, I asked for them to ‘get a l’il zany y’ulz’ and give me some curls and, most importantly, show me how to make curls with a ghd (Creation Mist, Hold Spray, Obedience cream and…go!). This really was revelatory to me – I had no idea you could curl with an iron. “Srsly y’ulz” – no idea.

No hair “After” pic yet because those were a part of the shoot we had on location, but I’ll upload them as soon as I get them. Once hair got did, we were taken in hand by a stylist who added a little something special to the look we were creating, to make us a little more ’shoot ready’.

As Rafael already mentioned, I’m supposed to be the new ambassador for Paris.

A few words about me:
I’m a 27 year old German girl, half Chinese and I’ve been living in France for 4 years now… More precisely in the Paris region. I’m working as a SAP consultant.

I love traveling and languages, particularly Spanish and taking photos. I spent a few months in Chile and Mexico during my studies. Apart from that I enjoy talking (and reading) about philosophical stuff and I go swimming from time to time.

I wanted to join Earth.org as I have been on other forums where several people asked me about sightseeing locations in Paris and I found earth.org has a pretty useful concept. The idea of being in contact with people from all over the world is very interesting (I like learning new stuff of other cultures). I have already started writing about tourist information on Paris on my own blog (it’s still under construction http://lifeofmareike.wordpress.com/).

Now I’m curious about who is working on this project. Rafael told me, he is already working on a site with information of all ambassadors. Could you present yourself in a few words, who you are, where you are, what you do (for earth.org and apart from that in your spare time)? That would be great. So I could catch a glimpse of the main members here.

Sunset Handstand in Bali

Upon arrival in Bali, our new friend, Pa Andy picked us up from the airport. Pa Andy is a former Jakarta businessman and drug addict. During an 11 month stay in prison God grabbed a hold of his heart and called him to be a witness of Christ’s redeeming love to other drug users.  When Pa Andy was released from prison, he moved to Bali and opened up a group home for recovering addicts with his wife and newly born daughter. Since opening the group home, the Lord has provided Pa Andy a home and car for free through the grace of others.  Tyler and I had the honor of living in the group home.  All of the “kids” that currently live with Pa Andy are between the age of 20-30 and are HIV+.  In order to minister to all, Pa Andy introduces himself to Hindu and Muslim prostitutes on the street and to drug addicts who are either dying from Aids in the hospital or serving time in prison.  His goal is not to preach or evangelize, but rather love individuals and show them who Christ is.  Tyler and I witnessed this process in action when joined Pa Andy during his visit to a prison where Pa Andy teaches a drug seminar, and during his visit to a prostitute on the street at 11pm, and to a lifeguard while on duty at the state beach.

Perhaps one of the most humbling moments I have experienced was on our second night in Bali when Jojo (Yoko) and Vea shared their testimonies with us.  Both Jojo and Vea started doing Heroin when they were 13 years old.  Despite the fact that they had Aids, despite the fact that Jojo had killed his wife on accident by giving her too much heroine, neither Jojo or Vea felt any bitterness towards God or feel any regret; both were simply glad to experience a new type of community provided by Pa Andy, and wanted to share with others the peace and salvation found in Christ.

Apart from the jokes, this is an important moment for the life of the project, especially for Ambassadors.

With this election Ambassadors will be called to choose 7 people, who will represent and manage more than 700 other ones from all over the world.

If you run, you could became a FAmSCo member!

Like any challenge, it has its difficulties but, if you are motivated and if you like to make your voice heard, you’ll find it as one of the most exciting and marvelous experience.

Is there any requirement? Passion and self commitment. With these two ingredients you’ll be able to face this job. Experience, naturally, will give you an important help.

What are the steps required in order to run for it?

First of all, add you name in the nomination wiki page (just click here).

In this page you’ll be able to explain the vision you have for the project, your ideas and the goals you want to achieve.

Don’t worry, it’s not required to write something complicate. Just write what you think, even if it’s only a brief sentence. Remember: sometime a word is worth 10000 words.

The deadline to nominate yourself is November 16th.

It’s normal to have doubts, but you haven’t to be feared of not being elected. The most important element is be there. Express your ideas! Make your opinion relevant!  You’ll be important just because you will run!

Everybody, at the end of the race, will win: candidates, even if not elected; Ambassadors and the whole Fedora Project.

What are the next steps?

* November 10-16: Nominations are open.
* November 17-23: Candidate questionnaires.
* November 27 – December 3: IRC Town Hall-style discussions with candidates for the various elected positions will be arranged.
* December 8-15: The elections will take place.

In the first round/semifinals of the playoffs, SPA and SDCF played the early game in what would turn out to be a suprisingly competetive match. However, SDCF wasn’t going to allow an upset as they pulled to a late lead to take the game 46-40. The other match of the day saw UMC and LOCF in a fierce back and forth tug-of-war of lead changes. It would come down to the final play where UMC missed the tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, sealing the LOCF victory, 40-37.

The championship game would see a smaller point differential than even the semifinal matches. LOCF and SDCF played a wire-to-wire game which saw no lead larger than 2 points for almost the entirety of the game. The game came down to SDCF’s final posession which began with .4 seconds remaming on the game clock for one last chance. The shot bounced just slightly off-center before LOCF rushed onto the court. Final score: 41-40.

As for the All-Star game, two teams of mixed players played a lighter, exhibition-type game with music and Sergreg providing play-by-play announcing. Even then, the score ended up even closer than the championship game. Tied 65-65.

सुलभ इंटरनॅशनल या सेवाभावी संस्थेचे नाव बहुतेक सगळ्यांनी ऐकलेले असेल. शहरांच्या गरीब वस्त्यांत व ग्रामीण भागात, स्वच्छतागृहांचा प्रसार व प्रचार कसा वाढेल याचा प्रयत्न ही संस्था करत असते. या संस्थेचे संस्थापक श्री. बिंदेश्वर पाठक यांना, अतिशय कमी खर्चाचे व पर्यावरणास हानी न पोचवणारे स्वच्छतागृह तयार केल्याबद्दल, या वर्षीचे ‘स्टॉकहोम वॉटर‘ बक्षिस नुकतेच मिळाले. श्री. पाठक यांनी हे कार्य जेंव्हा सुरू केले तेंव्हा स्वच्छतागृहांबद्दल साधे बोलणे सुद्धा हीनपणाचे लक्षण मानले जात असे. असे असताना सुद्धा श्री. पाठक यांनी आपले काम नेटानेच चालू ठेवले व ग्रामीण व गरीब शहरी स्त्रियांना मोठाच दिलासा मिळवून दिला. श्री पाठक यांना या कार्याबद्दल आदराने ‘स्वच्छतागृहांचे राजदूत‘ म्हणून संबोधले तरी चालण्यासारखे आहे इतकी त्यांची या कार्यामागे निष्ठा व तळमळ आहे.

भारतासारख्या देशात या प्रकारचे कार्य, एक सामाजिक चळवळ म्हणूनच चालवणे आवश्यक असले तरी ज्या देशाच्या नसानसातून फक्त व्यापारी रक्त वाहत आहे अशा अमेरिकेसारख्या देशात, जेंव्हा अशा प्रकारच्या कार्याची गरज भासू लागते तेंव्हा अशा स्वच्छतागृह राजदूतांची पगारी नेमणूकच करण्याशिवाय इलाज नाही हे लक्षात येते.

स्वच्छतागृहात वापर करण्याचे टॉयलेट पेपर बनवणार्‍या ‘चारमिन‘ या कंपनीने, नुकतीच न्यूयॉर्क शहराच्या मधवर्ती भागात असलेल्या ‘टाईम्स स्क्वेअर‘ या चौकाजवळ, नवीन स्वच्छतागृहे चालू केली आहेत. न्यूयॉर्कच्या या भागात, प्रवाशांची नेहमीच प्रचंड वर्दळ असते व सोईस्कर पडतील अशी स्वच्छतागृहे जवळपास नसल्याने त्यांची नेहमीच अडचण होते. ही गोष्ट लक्षात घेऊन ही स्वच्छतागृहे चालू करण्यात आली आहेत. सहा आठवड्यांपूर्वी चालू केलेल्या या स्वच्छतागृहांना किमान 5 लाख लोक तरी एका वर्षभरात भेट देतील अशी या कंपनीची अपेक्षा आहे.

या स्वच्छतागृहांची पुरेशी माहिती लोकांना नसल्याने या स्वच्छतागृहांना पाहिजे तेवढा प्रतिसाद मिळत नाहीये असे वाटल्याने, या कंपनीने आता 5 जणांची भरभक्कम पगारावर, स्वच्छतागृह राजदूत म्हणून नेमणूक करावयाची ठरवले आहे. या राजदूतांचे कॉन्ट्रॅक्ट फक्त 6 आठवड्यांचे असणार असून व त्या साठी त्यांना 10000 यू.एस. डॉलर्स एवढा मोबदला ही कंपनी देणार आहे.

अमेरिकेत नोकर्‍यांची सध्या प्रचंड वानवा असल्याने शेकडो तरूणतरूणींनी या कामासाठी अर्ज केले आहेत. या राजदूतांचे काम, टाईम्स स्क्वेअरमधल्या गर्दीत मिसळून, लोकांना या टॉयलेट्सचे महत्व समजवून सांगणे हे रहाणार आहे. या शिवाय फेसबूक किंवा ट्विटर सारख्या वेब साइट्स वर जाऊन या राजदूतांनी स्वच्छतागृहांचे महत्व लोकांना पटवावे अशीही कंपनीची अपेक्षा आहे. कंपनीने संभाव्य उमेदवारांना मुलाखतीसाठी बोलावले होते तेंव्हा काही उमेदवार पहाटे 4 वाजताच हजर झाले. एवढ्या लवकर का आलात म्हणून विचारणा केली असता ” माझे स्वच्छतागृहांशी किती जवळचे संबंध आहेत हे परिक्षकांना कळावे म्हणूम मी पहाटे आलो” असे मासलेवाईक उत्तर एका उमेदवाराने दिले. नोकरीसाठी आलेल्या उमेदवारात सध्या काम नसलेले नट-नट्या, विद्यार्थी व धंदेवाईकही होते. शिक्षणासाठी फीची व धंद्यासाठी भांडवल उभे करण्यासाठी आपण हे काम करण्यास इच्छुक असल्याचे त्यांनी सांगितले. मुलाखतीसाठी काही उमेदवार टॉयलेट पेपरचे ड्रेसेस घालून आले होते. “मी निवडला गेलो तर मी माझ्या टॉयलेटला चिकटून व त्याच्याशी एकनिष्ठ राहीन” असेही एका उमेदवाराने सांगितले.

ही नोकरी सहा आठवड्यांपुरती मर्यादित आहे. ‘चारमिन‘  या  कंपनीने या स्वच्छतागृहांसाठी 150 लोकांना, सहाय्यक म्हणून नोकरीवर ठेवलेलेच आहे. हे राजदूत या व्यतिरिक्त काम करणार आहेत. अमेरिकेत सध्या 10 टक्के लोक बेकारच आहेत. सहा आठवड्यांनंतर हे राजदूत परत बेकारच होणार आहेत. त्यांच्या या अभिनव अनुभवामुळे त्यांना भारतात ‘सुलभ इंटरनॅशनल‘ सारख्या कंपनीत कायम नोकरी नक्कीच मिळू शकेल यात शंकाच नाही.

A very good-looking and smart and amazingly awesome hot bro just informed me that ACTUALLY, Jupies didn’t invent this trend. Whomever does the advertising for Silver Sands Casino and humiliated faded Swedish ’star’ Dolph Lundgren via writing him into their advertising invented this trend. Does anyone know what agency does Silversands? Does anyone know who the un-named genius is? Don’t worry Ogilvy / Jupies – y’alls are still early adopters for ‘copying it before the masses copy it’. Still respect / love y’all.

Venezuela reopened its claim to territory in British Guiana at the United Nations in 1962. In November an agreement was reached by the parties, the UK, British Guiana, and Venezuela, to examine the available documentary material. The book assesses this agreement as follows at p. 154: “Whatever sophistry was deployed in the construction (and explanation of this agreement), this formula sought essentially to protect United Kingdom’s relations with Venezuela. The long-term interests of British Guiana were hopelessly abandoned…. All interests, the United Kingdom’s, the United States,… and, importantly, Venezuela’s were being appeased and reconciled. The interests of British Guiana, already a troubled colony and embarking upon political independence shortly, were secondary in this motley of contentions. As a result, the cause of British Guiana was sacrificed upon the altar of Anglo-American appeasement of Venezuela, deemed a strategic ally in the Cold War contest against Dr Fidel Castro for the heart of the Americas.”

Greetings and welcome-

The 2010 ride is going to be special for several reasons. First, I’ve been asked by my friends at the Lone Star Chapter of the MS Society to blog about my experience leading up to the ride. I’m one of five “Ambassadors” selected to represent several rider profiles: team captain, new rider, rider with MS, non-traditional rider, and top fundraiser (me). You should check out each of their blogs (see links to the right) and learn more about their stories.

Second, I’m thrilled (and hopeful) to ride 150 miles. The 2009 ride was interesting with torrential rains that trapped many of us in our team tent and washed out Day 2. I was definitely conflicted in that I wanted to ride the full distance to fulfill my responsibility to all of the generous folks that donated. On the other hand, my tail and legs were so sore and ready to stay on the couch for Day 2.

Saturday 24th was a great day. I had the honour to attend Linux Day 2009 organized by the GULLI, the local Linux user group, in the Metropolis Pub, Livorno. This place is owned and maintained by a Linux enthusiast who gave his availability to host this event: the location gave the right atmosphere for an event that was both interesting and fun.

The event was divided in two halves, morning and afternoon. Unfortunately I could attend only the latter one, but sure I had the possibility to meet great people and attend interesting speeches, like the open source relation with government, the creation of dynamic web sites with open source tools, and Linux on net-books.

Along the conference side, people joined the event to get in touch with Linux and ask questions/report concerns on Linux and some distributions.

I see also that some GULLI members had Fedora (or derivatives) installed in their laptop: I had the possibility to talk deeply with them and share each other the experience with this amazing distribution

Thanks to GULLI availability I had the honour to give one speech too, which basically was focused on the core features of Fedora, our community and our values.

People seemed interested and I felt like at home: they demonstrated to be a great community, from an organization to a socialisation point of view.

During the afternoon we had the opportunity to discuss about future collaborations, starting from the possibility to organize a Fedora Release Event (but it’s still an on-going issue), to the creation of a more strict relation between us. Both the ideas sounded great and, sure, I saw this as a great chance to improve our experience and share with them our passion and tools.

When available, I’ll post some photos of the event. Meanwhile I hope to have described, even briefly, what happened and what were the results of this amazing experience.
