Here is a film I had been hearing about for quite some time and FINALLY got a chance go view it. I am a big fan of the “slasher” horror sub-genre and was really hoping that this film would deliver the goods since good slasher films are pretty much long gone these days. This film does have it’s faults but for the most part I did enjoy it and found it to be a fresh breath for the slasher sub genre.

As you may have guessed…this film is about a girl named Mandy Lane(Amber Heard, she was Seth Rogen’s high school girlfriend in Pineapple Express). So who the heck is Mandy Lane? She is the girl you fell for in high school – but never got. She is the girl you drooled over in chemistry class- yet never had any “chemistry” with. Yeah…THAT is Mandy Lane. The film begins with Mandy and her best friend Emmet at some asshole’s house for a party. He invited Mandy over simply so he could mack on her and “get with” her. After some failed and un-modest advances by the asshole, Emmet comes to her rescue and gets an embarrassing beating from the asshole. Later on in the party Emmet and the asshole are patching things up on his roof, and in an attempt at vengeance for what he did to Mandy…Emmet tricks the drunk asshole into jumping from his roof into his swimming pool to impress Mandy. So the asshole jumps…and the asshole dies. Fast forward nine months later and Mandy is no longer friends with Emmet due to the tragic event, and has found a new group of guys and girls to hang with. Her friends decide to head to their buddy Red’s(Aaron Himelstein, of Fast Food Nation and the show Joan of Arcadia) farm house for a weekend of fun. Mandy is reluctant to go at first, given that she does not partake in the drugs/booze/sex combo, but decides to go anyway and bond with her new friends. All is well at Red’s farm house and the friends are having a good time until someone starts hacking up her friends one by one, of course none of the friends really notice given they are out partying and figure the “missing“ friends are out f*cking. Soon enough dead bodies begin to show up and Mandy must fend for her life as someone from her past is out for some vengeance, or is it the Garth, the family’s creepy and shadowy ranch hand? All The Boys Love Mandy Lane is a film created by a few guys who really know the slasher sub-genre. Writer Jacob Forman really put together a classic slasher and director Jonathan Levine put together the film to provide us with just enough suspense and blood to keep you entertained. The direction and cinematography for this film are very well done and “good direction” never seems to go hand-in-hand with slasher films given all the cheesy slashers we got over the years. With wide-panning shots of the farm house and subsequent farmland really give the sense of “isolation” for this film and set the “scream if you want but help is not coming” tone for the film.

One unusual aspect that this film employs is that the slasher’s identity is given away pretty early in the film. The beginning of the slasher carnage had this film coming off as a “who dun it?” type slasher flick, until the slasher’s identity is made quite obvious. I really enjoyed that aspect as it made this film a simple slasher with no silly sub-plots in it…yet. The gore in this film as not overdone although it was sufficient enough to please slasher fans and those who want to see a “serious” horror film.

Now onto my main fault with this film…the pacing. Director Jonathan Levine did so well with every other aspect of this film but his pacing in this film was a bit slow and I feel it held this film back. The film’s kills were spaced a bit too far apart and either a few more kills should have been added or some of the dialogue scenes should have been cut out to help this film movie better and keep the viewer’s interest. My next gripe is the film’s ending. PSEUDO SPOILER: The twist in this film did get me, and I was glad about that, but I felt the end sequence was a bit sloppy and lost the film’s composure. This ending did leave me thinking “Ok…why? Why do that?” but my questions were never answered. Some of you may enjoy endings that leave you to determine the unanswered questions, but I personally enjoy the psychology behind “unordinary” actions and would have loved to see that question answered before the credits rolled.

Overall, this is a good slasher film that although flawed should still provide you with a good watch and one of the better slashers in modern day horror.

You know how the best parties are the parties that start off out of control and stumble uphill from there? Those no-holes-barred affairs that are insane from the get go and get going harder at the drop of a glass? These parties are a series of successful accidents that barrel balls-out like a drunk falling off the edge of the world, all the way down to heaven.  Sure, maybe there’s a slow moment while you get refills and catch your breath, but then it’s back to hardcore intensity that no one tries to hand because they’re so out of hand. That’s what Zombieland is like.

Zombieland is a Maximator—Dutch beer with 11.6% alcohol. Maximator has bad taste, doesn’t give a rat’s ass what you think of its quality and will take you right where you want to go without hesitation. Kickass fun, it’s a drink you drink to get wasted as fast as you can, nothing more, nothing less. It knows what it is, doesn’t pretend to be anything else and won’t let you down when you need it. Much like Zombieland.

The definition of a good movie is that the film achieves what it sets out to do. Zombieland is a great movie.

The action is cool, the violence is gory, the dialog is funny… There are a couple weak points, however. Things get a little slow after Bill Murray’s cameo (his appearance is one of the high points of the movie). The kid who has the lead (Jesse Eisenberg) is out of his league here, especially ’cause Woody Harrelson shines like he hasn’t in a long time and Abigial Breslin (the Sunshine in Little Miss Sunshine) rocks her role. i almost docked Zombieland half a shot because of how amateurish Eisenberg was, but i’m feeling generous today.

Besides, i haven’t had this much fun in a movie in a long time, and that’s gotta count for something.

Before i get carried away, i’m gonna hafta card Abigail Breslin here. She kicks it as the youngest non-zombie, but at 12 years old, she’s not allowed past this point.

A couple of drink references…

The first one is Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) taking shots from a fifth while driving. He pours a shot for Colombus (Jesse Eisenberg), who tosses it out of the truck window and only pretends to drink it.

Wichita (Emma Stone) and Columbus (Eisenberg) find a bottle of 1997 Georges de la Tour in Bill Murray’s palace and reminisce about ‘the old days’ before they drink it.

Finally, Tallahassee (Harrelson) wears a beer hat. You know, a construction worker’s helmet with a can holder attached to each side and plastic tubing leading from the cans to your mouth. Later on, Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) wears it but substitutes Pepsi for beer. Don’t believe me? Here’s proof:

The music is so hard core for this movie that i’m giving it a post of it’s own as soon as i figure out how to post multiple songs in one player.

You get a taste of things to come with the Metallica at the top of the post. Apart from that, the ‘tude of the film is harder than even the music.

We are talking about, perhaps, the Rock and Roll film of the year here, people.

'ZOMBIELAND' Teaser Poster

A little unusual to post these in the same update but that’s how it appeared in Variety… Dual 3D sequels:

Hollywood is moving forward with a pair of unlikely 3D sequels. Sony is in the process of inking deals to bring back the “Zombieland” team for a second installment, but this time the bloody comedy is poised to unspool in 3D. And Paramount has greenlit a third “Jackass,” which will also be shot in 3D.

…The [new JACKASS] film will lense in Knob Lick, Kentucky, Mianus, Connecticut, Fukang, China, Buttzville, New Jersey and Gayville, South Dakota.

It will come out in late 2010 and it may or may not be in 3-D. I know it’s being reported it will be in 3-D, but until we test those cameras out we won’t make the decision. Llegan los zombies, la sangre, los infectados y un sin fin de situaciones disparatadas con el fin de mantenerse a salvo. La gran pregunta es ¿Se puede mezclar el genero del terror con el humor y un elenco plenamente hollywoodense? La respuesta, después de ver Zombieland, es claramente un si.   Zombieland es un film netamente comercial (y enfaticemos en que este término no es en absoluto algo malo), tiene sangre y gore suficientes como para no defraudar a nadie. Las mordeduras y las cabezas reventadas se mezclan en las divertidísimas maneras de aniquilar un zombie. El personaje que tiene el espíritu más sanguinario es Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), quien disfruta y es es el mejor matando muertos vivientes. 
 
 Si hay alguna falla que se le puede atribuir es su falta de ambición en el guión. No es nada malo, en absoluto; Columbus es un buen protagonista (Jesse Eisenberg hace un gran trabajo) y no hace falta que nos paremos cada dos por tres a recordar lo solos que estamos en Zombieland, lo difícil que es pensar que el mundo ha entrado en una fase avanzada de Apocalipsis. Ya hay otras películas que se toman suficientemente en serio para tratar estos temas; aquí solo hay diversión y ganas de pasarlo bien.  
 
Posiblemente Zombieland se postula como de las comedias más divertidas del año,  que posiblemente entregue nuevas secuelas y que ha estado en su primer fin de semana de exhibición en Estados Unidos se coronó como la numero 1.

I watched the Supergirl movie for the first time in years recently and, as bad as it is, there’s something sweet and charming about Helen Slater in that role. Anyway, upon sitting through it I decided it was time to do an updated Supergirl manip. Bit of a viewers choice in this piece of casting, I couldn’t figure out who could be a potential Supergirl for a modern film so I asked around the net, the winner by popular vote was Amber Heard, which on reflection should have been one of the first names I thought of (dah!).

Based the outfit off my Superman re-design, although made it slightly different to represent her side of the family. This was originally gonna have Brandon Routh’s Superman as well in the manip but the lack of decent size images from Superman Returns put a dampener on that idea. Probably about 14 hours work.

El 27 de noviembre se estrenará en nuestros cines “Bienvenidos a Zombieland”, que, aunque probablemente no aporte grandes novedades a un género bastante trillado, y ya enfocado también desde el del humor (“Zombies party” -2004, estupenda película británica, es un ejemplo de ello), sí que su trailer ha conseguido despertar mi curiosidad.

Puede que el desenfado con el que el protagonista presenta la historia, me influya para pensar, que talvez me encuentre ante una comedia que puede hacerme pasar un buen rato, lo que ya sería mucho.

La peli está dirigida por Ruben Fleischer, un señor que no os sonará mucho (yo he tenido que mirar un poco por ahí para saber que ha dirigido), porque sus trabajos como director, guionista o productor, han sido hechos principalmente para televisión.

La protagonizan Jesse Eisenberg (un “jovencito” de 26 años, que mantiene intacta su estética de adolescente, y que sí tiene una filmografía bastante amplia para haber comenzado en esto del cine en el año 2002), Woody Harrelson (aquel camarero paleto e inocentón que conocimos en la barra de “Cheers”, y que luego ha conseguido llegar a aterrorizarnos con algunos de sus personajes), Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Amber Heard y Bill Murray (al que imagino en una pequeña, pero suculenta intervención).

No comento nada de su sinopsis, porque creo que el trailer ya cuenta lo suficiente sobre lo que se podrá ver en la película.

Echadle un vistazo. Puede que también le encontréis algún atractivo y os decidáis a verla cuando se estrene.

    The zombie genre is one that has become inundated with many entries and many of them are not so memorable.  I was hoping Zombieland would remedy this problem and it really does it very well.  This is definitely one of the best entries in the genre I have seen in a long while, and many compare it to Shaun of the Dead, but they are only easily compared as they are both comedies involving zombies.  Whereas Shaun at it’s heart is a romantic comedy, Zombieland is a road trip film and it fires on all cylinders within that film convention.  The comedy and the heart of the characters is what really propels the film and you really care for all the characters.  There are no stereotypes in this film and that is an amazing thing to see in a horror film.  It has some genuinely scary moments, but goes more for laughs throughout the film and almost always succeeds.  This is a great hybrid of horror and comedy, and is well worth repeated viewings.

    The plot basics are this, it is present day and civilization has been brought down to its knees by Mad Cow Disease and has affected humanity and turned most people into mindless flesh eating zombies.  We meet Columbus (Eisenberg), an neurotic ex college student, who survives by his own book of rules and is trying to get back to Columbus to see if his parents are still alive.  He meets up with Tallahassee (Harrellson) a zombie ass kicker, and they hook up, since they are both going the same way.  Along the way they meat 2 girls, Wichita (Stone) and Little Rock (Breslin) who are sisters and are trying to get to a amusement park on the West Coast that they believe is zombie free.  After a few misadventures they had to California and that is when a huge zombie attack is upon them and one wonders will Columbus be able to man up now or keep going with his neurotic ways?

    This was an amazing film.  The direction by Fleischer is amazing.  He shifts from seems of over the top humor to quick and frenetic zombie attacks with great ease.  It also never seems as if the 2 themes in the film are separate.  The voiceover narration in the film is a great touch as well, probably the best use of a narration in a film since Blade Runner.  The script is solid too, it is gut wrenchingly funny, and also has a very humanistic element throughout the film.  It is a film with a lot of heart and it never feels like it is forced on you it just comes organically from the story and the performances by the cast.  The cast is amazing as well, Harrellson really steals the film and this is by far his best performance since Natural Born Killers.  Eisenberg as the lead is very good too, he gives a performance that never annoys you, which I am sure would have happened if they got someone like Jon Hader or Michael Cera for the part.  The little bit with Heard is great as well, she is definitely one of the up and coming genre actresses with roles like this and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.  The SFX in the film is phenomenal.  It has some great zombie effects, my personal favorites being Heard and the clown zombie. Definitely the best zombie make up work I have seen since the Dawn of the Dead remake. The soundtrack that the filmmakers chose is great too, every song really hits the notes that they want the viewer to feel.  They have the right feel of what music works like the music in a Rob Zombie film.  This is a great zombie film and a hilarious comedy as well.  I highly recommend this one.

It’s no ‘28 Weeks Later’ or ‘House Of 1000 Corpses’ but it definitely is up there with the likes of ‘Shaun Of The Dead.’ Zombieland, which some of you may remember from my post back in September, where I actually claimed that it was the new Shaun Of The Dead, has been in the cinema for a month now, and it’s taken that long for me to be able to attend a screening of it. I know, it’s awful.

However you may be intrigued to know, that Zombieland, being described by some as ‘pure in your face blood and guts,‘ would only be half right, actually, not even that. Maybe a third right. There is blood and guts, like in any zombie film, but this is completely outweighed by the end of the film and it’s rather large amount of humour throughout. A rather nice touch is the set of survival rules laid out by the first protagonist we come across. Another being ‘Zombie kill of the week’ and another lovable performance is that of the lovable Bill Murray. The zombie genre is far from dead, that’s clear my friends.

Zombieland is a greatly crafted zomcom with excellent performances from all the stars, and I actually mean that for once. Kudos to the casting agent, a job very well done. Because there isn’t a moment throughout Zombieland where you won’t enjoy yourself, fulfilling, fun, and a complete riot. It’s almost like a roller-coaster ride of complete and utter immeasurable entertainment, where even the troughs aren’t disappointing. It certainly has enough gore to keep the blood-lovers happy and enough gags to laugh your socks off, definitely being ridiculous enough in terms of its wacky plot, ‘Hey, oh my goodness, it’s the zombiepocalypse, ah but what the heck, let’s all have a laugh!‘ Quite possibly the best take on a post-apocalyptic world in a long time.

Each character within the film has, well, how can I put this… Flaws. Purposeful flaws of course, Tallahassee for example is motivated through the zombie-stricken and bloody carnage by one thing. A Twinkie. In fact, one of my favourable lines from Tallahassee is this; “Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date. Someday very soon, life’s little Twinkie gauge is going to go…empty.” Another would be “It wasn’t long before the zombies began to get clever. When you were at your most vulnerable, somehow they could just smell it… Don’t let them catch you with your pants down.” Basically, if you want a laugh, a feel good movie, something to make you feel better about whatever situation your in, or if you just want to see some zombies. This is the movie for you. Worth owning on DVD? Without a doubt. Cult classic? Maybe. Bad movie? Heck no.

I hadn’t even heard of Emma Stone until Zombieland. The movie was gory and funny and maybe the best time I’ve had this year. Those boots Emma (who plays Wichita) sport in film? Bandolino. Agatha to be exact. To be even more exact, a picture:

Unfortunately, they’re from a few seasons ago so slim, slim chances of getting your hands on a pair. Everyone – style hunter, bloggers, etc – seem to be in agreement that the next best thing is a pair of Bandolino Castalina boots. Click on that link to have a look-see.
