It’s been a fair while since I posted, hasn’t it? There’s pretty much one reason for that: Twitter. I used to think the term “microblogging” was a bit bullshitty, but actually, I do seem to post all my cool links there these days rather than do a whole post about them.

It’s daft really. I always feel pressured to do a whole load of spiel to go with everything I post (probably from English lessons at school. Can’t turn in anything less than two A4 sides!), but I personally prefer the blogs that just say “Here’s something cool” with a couple of lines about it. Wordy posts tend to get skipped in my Google Reader. That’s probably heresy for a copywriter to admit, but I know the majority of the internet is with me, so we might as well all face the truth. If you’re just sharing a cool link or picture or video, no-one’s going to read a thesis about it unless they suspect you have something really interesting to add.

Of course, there are some wordy posts in my Google Reader that always get read. Adland Suit’s brilliant ranty posts, Charlie Brooker’s brilliant ranty posts, and stuff I happen to be interested in. But when the post is just showing off a cool piece of content, Twitter proves you really don’t need more than a line or two to go with it.

So, on that note, here’s a cool (if slightly gory) way of using packaging to get a message across:

[via The Dieline]

And here’s my opinion: great idea, with one big problem. When has a ketchup packet ever ripped open the way it’s supposed to? I’d be willing to bet that kid’s been disembowelled, bitten, and hacked at with knives to get at his ketchuppy insides by now. Landmines have got nothing on the savagery I’ve seen in McDonald’s of a lunchtime.

It amazes me how a band as talented, old, and prolific as this, goes under the radar. Still going since 1991, Lovesliescrushing is an amazing crossroads of ambient music and dream pop, leaning heavily on the dream and backing off of the pop. In their relentless pursuit of heavily textured sound, they have as much in common with Tim Hecker as with Cocteau Twins. It’s probably important to note that the word textured gets thrown around a lot with regards to shoegaze bands, but Lovesliescrushing makes Loveless sound as textured as porcelain. Guitarist Scott Cortez uses only guitar to make his otherworldly sounds, running it through endless effects, loop devices, and using many manners of unorthodox ways to get his haunting sounds. Over their career they’ve managed to get as far as possible from traditional guitar sounds, to the point where your jaw drops in astonishment because there’s no fucking way that could be a guitar. Couple that with the fact the band records all their music on a 4 track recorder, and you’ve got yourself ineffably mind-blowing music. But texture isn’t the only facet of their craft, always holding true to their dream pop roots. Singer Melissa Arpin-Duimstra layers her utterly angelic voice seamlessly over the wall of sound. The chords are thick, massive, and uplifting, progressing like beams of sunlight pulsing through sparse clouds. The music drifts and builds until you’re lost in it, floating along with them in a percussionless chorus from an otherwordly heaven. It’s unconventional and experimental without sounding unfamiliar, always retaining that human element.

I’ve sifted through their discography and upped two of what I feel are their best. Xuvetyn is their second full length, and sounds very nineties. It’s more drawn out and thicker, less polished but not any less beautiful. Voirshn is a lot more glitchy and processed; Cortez describes it pretty aptly as “glitch-bliss.”

Xuvetyn (1996)

Voirshn (2002)

Check them out and support the band
They’ve got a box set of rarities coming out next year that looks fantastic.

The show is called “From the Other Side of the Mirror” and will be broadcast every Monday at 3pm. You can find KOOP radio at 91.7 Fm in the Austin area, or stream it online at www.koop.org

The idea behind the show is pretty simple. Each week the show will focus on a song, producer, label, musician(s), venue, etc. that has a major influence on music, their fingerprints are everywhere, but are forgotten or under most people’s radar. I will help listeners connect the musical dots. Like a documentary for your ears if you will. I will tell their story and showcase the various music they have created or been involved with.

I’m not Icelandic, nor do I claim to understand Icelandic. But that’s not really the point. Even if I were, I couldn’t understand some of the lyrics sung by lead singer “Jonsi” of Sigur Ros. Granted, there’s supposed to be an accent on the “o” in “Ros” but that’s a little bit over my head. Sigur Ros has been around for quite a while, continually pumping out new sounding music that not everyone can understand. I take that back, that BARELY ANYONE can understand. In some of their songs, they use a language called “Hopelandic.” And while it is reminiscent of Icelandic and the sounds that are used to create Icelandic language, it is not the same thing.

However, that does not detract from the listening experience that Sigur Ros offers. They’re probably the most unique sounding band I’ve talked about here or that I’ve ever listened to. Could it be thanks to their lead singer playing the guitar with a cello bow? Maybe. But it also comes with the speed, the sound, the lyrics and the length of their music. They’ve created a unique library of music that doesn’t appeal to everyone. But the people that it does appeal to are the ones that can truly appreciate it’s brilliance. The ambient sound, hopelessly indescribable vocals and lofty song length are distinct to Sigur Ros as a group.

Jonsi

Arguably, their best album, Agaetis Byrjun, was released in 1999 and it still sets the benchmark for their other albums. Many of the albums tracks have been used in various TV shows and it has been reviewed as one of the great albums of recent memory. I remember the first time I listen to the third track off of Agaetis Byrjun, “Staralfur”, and it nearly brought me to tears. I had never heard anything even remotely similar to the things I was hearing at the time. The gibberish language that no one understands, the echoing piano and orchestral might of the background music provided the background music to my life. Everything went blank and the music was the only thing happening. This is what happens every time I listen to it even now. The breakdown at roughly 4:10 into the song makes me wish I lived in Iceland so I could walk around, listening to their music and seeing the sights the scenic countryside provides. That sentiment lasts for the entire album.

Their fourth album Takk… incorporates a slightly grittier guitar sound, but still brings us the slow pace of their ambient, environmental sound. And as always, it’s in a foreign language. It might seem hard to judge music if I can’t understand the lyrics, but I digress. The album builds towards the middle with increasing momentum and hits it like a bat out of hell. Drums bang, voices carry, guitar thrives and piano pounds as the track “Saeglopor” reaches the heights of it’s own being and the albums’ existence.

Sigur Ros is a band that’s very niche like, and only certain people are going to like it. But you have to respect what they do. They try different things and make them work, whether you like it or not. They even had a documentary made about the

m. I’ve seen part of the movie, and from what I can tell, it’s a good film that covers a tour that they did across their home country that was free for all to go to. Announcing their shows only a couple days in advance, the venues filled up quick and lines were long. It’s quite the interesting angle on a story about the pride of Icelandic music.

“MECCANISMORTE is the ultimate aural effort by Esteban D’Ark (alias Vacio Perfecto from Spain) well known for his sombre electronica and Siegmar Fricke who works as Pharmakustik on aseptic sound-fields for many years.
With their computational tools both operators generated six necromechanical movements characterized by metascientific reductionism of simulated factory-ambiences and unpleasant machinistic repercussions embedded in a surrealistic fluxus of organic chemistry. Palpitating roto-propulsions from icy and morbid factory-halls offer new dimensions of neurophysiological sound-evidence in crystal-clear structure and loudness without mercy. MECCANISMORTE will be the final mortosis along the peripheral wall of psychic enclosure.”

From: http://earthmantra.com/release-detail.php?id=101 “Original sound design, widely varying

From: http://earthmantra.com/release-detail.php?id=101

“Original sound design, widely varying instrumentation, broad thematic scope, and a dark, profound vision are the hallmarks of Palancar’s classic 2003 release, Momerath. Originally released commercially on Blue Water Records, this album is now re-released and available freely under Creative Commons via Earth Mantra.

Greg Bear is one of Palancar’s favorite authors, and his novel Anvil of Stars left such an impact on him that this two-disc album is Palancar’s tribute to this spectacular novel, essentially an unofficial book soundtrack. A collection of very diverse instrumental pieces, the release is an exploration of dark ambience, twisted abtract textures, progressive electronica, polyrhythmic post-rock, and exotic world fusion, with more than two hours of music.

This music is intended to strongly echo the themes of the book, covering the extremes of human experience: from alien indifference all the way to unrestrainable emotion, from pure undiluted rage to delicate and fragile love, from the connections of family and community all the way to revenge and bloodlust, from images of unearthly beauty to impressions of the most horrifying warfare imaginable. Like the novel itself, Momerath is meant to be something that will hopefully tease your senses, inspire your emotions, shock your conscience, and perhaps even challenge your world view.

For those who have not read Bear’s book, it is very much a classical odyssey, following the tortuous path of his protagonists across a battle-scarred universe of distrust and suspicion, where the lawless and the law enforcer alike wield weapons of ultimate destruction. It is a study of the dark underbelly of the rule of law, and of the effect of revenge and hatred upon the human heart. This album aims to evoke at least some of the power and majesty of this incomparable piece of literature.

Whether or not you are a reader of Greg Bear, a reader of science fiction, or much of a reader at all, Palancar hopes the universal themes in Momerath will carry you away on a dizzying journey through the depths of the soul.”
