This picture is old… But I love it; because, it’s not trend heavy. Could keep all these pieces forever.

And remember when I said I got rid of pretty much everything in my closet…

Well I ordered the Joe’s Denim Leggings and I already have a pair of the Lululemon leggings. I also picked up a Mike + Chris Leather Hoodie at this past summers Barney’s Warehouse sale. It had a relatively small rip and needed a new zipper. So I got an $1800 jacket for $40 and spent $25 fixing it and it looks perfect. I also bought this pair of Alexander Wang boots, a bit ago at Barney’s.

Anyways, I decided I get too bored with sweaters to spend too much money on just one. I spied a bunch of sweaters at Forever 21 this past weekend, and have decided to go online and order like 10 sweaters. Forever’s shit doesn’t last very long; but, if I literally have 10 of them, that will cost about $300… I can just dispose em all at the end of the winter! I live in LA, doesn’t get THAT cold.

So here are my picks!

Taking full of advantage of the mid-day holiday in November, the team at Blink decided to head to the mall to get ready for the Reel Asian Film Festival. The Opening Night Gala was the HK-flick Overheard, which was absolutely stellar! The actual review is still pending (Mark…any day now!) but in the mean time enjoy the pics taken by our favourite photographer Ste. Ho fromShutter.lit.

Speaking of favourites, get a load of those wedgey booties which are actually from…get this…Spring! Remember Transit? But they’re actually incredibly comfy, in that suedette finish with the big buckles – you know I love my hardware! Anyway, no matter how cold it gets I’ve sworn to give my Top Shop sandals play. Thank goodness for tights!

In this season, hosiery is one of the things that I wear almost everyday. Not to mention that it is comfy and just simply looks great under the skirt or dress, along with your flats, booties or boots. American Apparel has a lot of hosiery selection for hosiery lover. There’s vibrant colors with shimmer hosiery for girls who dare to stand out, detailed design like polkadots and spirals can add some sexiness of the overall look, and even two color pantyhose that would definitely catch people’s attention as you walk by.

Ofcourse I wouldn’t miss American Apparel’s hosiery collection as I am a hosiery lover! The following are the ones that I got from AA.

Super Sheer Pantyhose $15.00

Aren’t they fun to match up your wardrobe? If you have a lot of black outfit, you wouldn’t go wrong with American Apparel’s colorful super sheer or opaque pantyhose. Visit their website to view more collection.

Sheets in soft, buttery jersey! Woohoo. I know Muji sells them, but the largest size they come in is Queen. So American Apparel, it is. Yes they sell bedding too. Told you I’m hooked.

I’ve got a 20% discount code I can share with five friends, good through 3Dec. If you want it, email me now!

And yes, all this because we’ve sold our place as some of you already know (yea, all in the midst of the son’s school brouhaha) and will be moving to this beautiful view.

A whole lifestyle change for us. Slower in pace and closer to nature. Not unlike my days at Kent Ridge Hall.

I need. I like.

i had to classify this under adventures, because that’s the only way i could justify my precio

i had to classify this under adventures, because that’s the only way i could justify my precious saturday being wasted.

i went to the AA Rummage Sale held in Toronto from Nov 27-29, jaded by the promises of discounts up to 85%. i should have known better. i could rant about this for a long, long time, but here’s a list so you can get the gist of it.

1) the wait time is RIDICULOUS. expect to wait an average of 4 hours. but at the same time, don’t expect to be guaranteed in.
2) unless you camp out from 6 AM for the doors to open, you won’t get anything worth your time. American Apparel is not worth that sort of effort.
3) the merchandise is GARBAGE. like literally. 95% things have holes, rips, stains, discolouration. 95% of the stock are t-shirts, with the aforementioned holes, rips etc. i don’t know if it’s just me, but if i want a hole-y t-shirt, i wouldn’t go all the way dt to buy one. i could probably find one in my own closet. or not. because you know what i do with t-shirts with holes? i throw them out or donate them to goodwill.
4) there is no selection. this may not have applied to people who camped out, but for the majority of us, you can only choose from ugly things or t-shirts. i think a lot of people wanted hoodies, and i think i saw ONE. oh, there was a bunch of polka dot ones, but they were all like XXL, and most guys don’t wear polka dots, and most girls don’t wear XXL. all i wanted was a cardigan, didn’t see any at all. i think i would have found better selection at a garage sale.

okay, by the end of that list my anger came out. i don’t know though, some people were like oh you just have to look, but i’m a really skilled shopper if i say so myself, and i went through pretty much every rack and box and pile there, and i left with nothing.

if AA is having a rummage sale near where you live and wondering if you should go, unless you plan to camp out for a hoodie, don’t bother. there is a reason why AA has these sales, it’s to get rid of all the garbage they can’t sell in their stores. i’m just trying to tell myself, at least i spent some loonngggg quality conversations about kicking the annoying girls in front of us in line and how much we hate AA and the sorts with some fun people, and i got some thai for dinner, so the day wasn’t completely wasted……♪

Insanity.

I am incredibly tired from the last three days. All nighter for type, little sleep for AA on Fri, barely any sleep on Fri night for AA again today.

But on the bright(er) side, I scored some nice shit (as in 24 items) for $208.66 in total after taxes.

- brown wool floppy hat
- tie dye circle scarf
- white circle scarf
- olive jersey scarf
- brown 3-tone footless socks
- black thigh highs (realized that they’re mismatched when I got home..)
- white thigh highs
- 5 pairs of tights
- gold lame leggings
- white mesh leggings
- cream lace unitard
- navy le sac dress
- metallic micro-mesh long sleeve mini dress
- zig zag jersey double-u long sleeve dress
- purple oversized ringer see-thru tshirt
- beige drawstring jersey tank dress
- black turtleneck dress
- red/black 2-tone fitted mini dress
- plaid short sleeve collared shirt

Sadly, I already snagged a hole in one pair of tights. Those beautiful opaque blue tights! I guess I’ll just have to wear them with boots so the hole doesn’t show.

It has come to my attention that American Apparel bras are heavily influenced by Ariel’s apparel in The Little Mermaid (1989).

An old friend of mine said that “Ariel is basically just wearing a bandeau top…except that it’s shells”.

Thus, I deduce that Ariel is wearing the equivalent of one of American Apparel’s Tube Bras (seen below).

How much, then, has American Apparel been influenced by the retroactive valuation of late-Reaganite sealife? Perhaps it indicates a neo-Freudian connection between childhood sexuality and its fashionable expression in lamé underwear. This bra is constructed of 80% cotton and 20% elastane. Perhaps this symbolises the conflict between the comfort and domesticity of childhood and the supple excitement of a new found eroticism. Or, perhaps Ariel’s bodaciousness, her slinky cavorting, influenced Dov Charney’s vision of a clothing brand entirely advertised by slightly-clad, often unconventionally attractive, rail thin, girls.

Ariel herself is a dreamer. She longs to escape the trappings of her molecularly questionable world. She has been a clear influence on the ‘teenage girl sighing and positing her eyelashes skyward’ thing- prime examples of this include every Sofia Copolla film, M83’s Graveyard Girl, and LiveJournal. With regards to the latter, there is also a clear connection with the ‘poetically misplaced semi-colon’ thing. She ‘wants to be where the people are’, just like American Apparel employees. They wear fashionable clothes in fashionable areas of London, but they’re unable to strut about those streets and have to, instead, settle for aspirationally fashionable customers and unflattering lighting. Conveniently, The Little Mermaid took $40,227,000 at the box-office, which is about as much as individual American Apparel items cost.

The film grossed over $200,000,000 worldwide. Nonetheless, it’s pleasantly surprising how a film made 20 years ago- at the birth of our current stage of commoditised culture- can still be so visually relevant. Perhaps, the fact that The Little Mermaid signalled the renaissance of the Disney franchise also signals the birth of media omnipresence, which is what we now ultimately consider culture: mass marketing, advertising techniques that straddle American sentimentality and genuine artistry, and appealing to both adults and children with the same product for different reasons.

Think about it.

I was debating whether or not to go out last night since I’ve got a midterm on Tuesday and if

I was debating whether or not to go out last night since I’ve got a midterm on Tuesday and if Queen’s wins the Vanier Cup today I would definitely want to go out tonight. But I decided I might as well, I wasn’t being very productive last night (or right now either, by the looks of it). So I dolled myself up and made my way to Ale last night. I love Ale because I always bump into a million people and it’s always a good time.

I also decided to go out ’cause I wanted the chance to wear my new American Apparel Printed Sweetheart Two-Tone Minidress, which I got a bunch of compliments on from total strangers. They don’t have the one I own on the site right now, possibly because of production issues. I definitely recommend this dress for the thin, and especially for those who don’t mind the whole skin-tight thing. It’s extremely fitted and would show off any semblance of a stomach, but less so if you get it in a print rather than one of the metallic solids. But it makes dancing easy and you will get a tonne of compliments.

A few great things I saw at Ale last night:
* I saw a blonde wearing the most adorable bandage dress that was, I believe, backless except for a few criss-crossing straps along the back. It was super hot and really nicely fitted, I definitely want to get my hands on one if I ever see it in stores.
* I spotted the American Apparel Cotton Spandex Jersey Double U-Neck Dress with a thick belt and boots. I normally can’t stand boots and mini dresses together at a club, but somehow this worked out fine.
* I’m really beginning to hate on the whole two-toned dresses thing. I’m really tired of the typical two-toned mini dress. But I’m loving cute combinations of a fitted top and loose skirt. I’m tired of seeing pencil skirts at clubs. I feel like those should be seen in office buildings. If you’re going to go for a tight skirt, stick to a tight dress for the full vamp feel.

Gaels are currently losing to Calgary, but we’ll see how it goes. I have a completely new look for tonight already planned out so I hope I get to wear it. Go Gaels Go! Bring the Vanier Cup home!

AA rummage sale today, hoping to score some good stuff–fingers crossed! When there’s a chance like this to get things at cheaper price, you know what you gotta do!

Will report back later the day/night how it went. I’m exited I think.

……

i’m back. Empty handed. I waited in line for 2.5hr and we barely moved, as in half a block from Adelaide. At that rate, there was no way that I’m getting in until at least 7, seriously. The line was massive.

That’s me waiting.

So the plan is, tomorrow we’re gonna be down there at 7am while doing homework when we’re waiting. We better be the first batch of people to get in.

Lesson learned from today:
- dress warmly
- get there early
- bring a thermal with warm water
- bring something to entertain self

Otherwise, today’s been one heck of an interesting day! While we were in line, a lady started handing out $20 discount coupons to everyone. Corinne was so inspired by it that she decided to get her nose pierced and skip out on the waiting. So she did LOL. I watched the whole piercing process. It was very new to me, seeing it in person instead of on youtube and everything. I could feel the pressure and pain when the piercer clamped her nose and jabbed the needle through and all. Ouch!

After we left, as we were waiting to cross the street, there was a tall and skinny person standing beside us who we thought looked exactly like one of the frosh bosses. And you know what? It was! How coincidental was that? On King street at 3:30 crossing the road. Oh dear lol! I kept looking back at him to make sure it was the person, and he looked back and it was so awkward.

And now I’m back in rez. And realized that I fucking lost my iPod. It’s got to be at the piercing parlour! That was the last time I can remember using it. Called them and they said there was nothing but if they do see anything about it, they’ll give me a call. I can’t believe I’m using this acronym, but FML.

Last week, I encountered a situation that every college student has (or will) at one time or another

Last week, I encountered a situation that every college student has (or will) at one time or another: I accidentally signed up for a credit card. When the (sneaky) sales girl at Nordstrom asked if I’d like to sign up for a rewards card, I cheerfully yelped, “Sure!” I thought this card MUST be similar to my (now defunct) Blockbuster rewards card, which wasn’t actually used for purchasing, but gave me points to earn free popcorn instead.

I was wrong.

Miss Nordstrom had swindled me into signing up for the real deal. Luckily, I only charged a good $110 to my new card (that’s sarcasm), however, in an effort to ensure that I never get myself into this kind of debt debacle again, I decided to stick to buying from people who understand what it means to be a struggling artist (er, writer, whatevs). So, I turned to the online shopping portal Etsy – my favorite place to spend time (& cash) on the internet.

For those of you who have been living under a rock (or without an internet connection or penchant for online purchasing), here’s some quick Etsy 411:

“Etsy is a website that provides the general public with a way to buy and sell handmade items as well as vintage items and craft supplies.” (Thanks, Wikipedia!) Basically, the site is chock full of handmade/eccentric goodies – from vintage handbags to hand sewn dresses, created by regular people like you (or the craftier version of you). A lot of the designers on Etsy keep it eco-friendly, too, which def gets a thumbs up from me.

But, if you’re a first time Etsy-peruser, it can be a little intimidating. So I’m here to break it down for you & showcase five of my favorite E-fashionistas. I found five sites that not only offer swoon-worthy threads, but are safe for your wallet (or Mom’s Visa bill).

1)	Every Little Counts . Okay, okay. Screen-printed tees are a dime a dozen. But I’m a sucker for romance, and I lurrve the creative sayings that adorn these breezy tees & tanks, like “Feel Like Making Love,” “A Violent, Sensual, Sensitive Girl” and “I can’t fight this feeling.” Adorbs.

2) Sandmaiden. Sandmaiden is a little pricey, but the designs are unique and are made from all-natural fibers. Plus the clothes are SO. UNBELIEVABLY.COMFORTABLE. Not kidding. Just check out these little beauties and imagine how wonderful that organic cotton jersey blend would feel draped over your achy bod the morning after a night of heavy drinking. Even better? You’ll be the only girl on campus with one, since most pieces on the site are one -of-a-kind designs.

3) Maiden Rapture Vintage Okay, the goods in this shop aren’t all handmade, but who doesn’t love vintage cardigans, dresses, blazers and accessories? This site makes it easy peezy to find the perfect unique piece from the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s to add to your wardrobe. I’m obsessed with blazers and plaid lately, and I found plenty in this shop. And the prices are totes affordable.

4) Sarah Seven Made from recycled vintage and natural fabrics, Sarah Seven concocts clothes worth coveting (and saving beer money for). The shop offers dresses, skirts and shirts in “vintage-inspired” designs with a modern spin. Each piece is custom designed (you provide your measurements and bra size), so you know you’re getting a perfectly unique, tailored fit every time. Even if you don’t snag yourself a darling dress, the site is totally worth checking out just for the awesome photography. I want to believe that Miss Sarah Seven herself is the girl in the nerdy (yet somehow chic) green glasses, but I think that’s just because I’m sitting here wearing my coke-bottle glasses & feeling lonely. Oh — and 5% of each purchase is donated to charities. Cool.

sometimes i have stuff to do

sometimes i feel like dyin

i wish i wanted to go home

wait i have no home

the future looks bleak

sometimes i feel like i will live a great life

sometimes i feel like i should die pretty soon

last night i had a dream about jenny lewis and ernest hemingway

jenny lewis and i were waiting at a bus stop near the sunland park mall on the westside of el paso texas

we smoked cigarettes together and i held her hand

it was august , it was hot, the sun was setting

jenny lewis looked at a palm tree

i looked at some cars

she said ‘ were not taking the bus’

i said ‘ how will we get back to our houses than’

she said her friend ernest hemingway is picking us up

i looked at a palm tree and put my head down and said ‘ okay’

she said ‘ we can’t hold hands in front of ernest hemingway’

i said ‘ why’

she said because ernest hemingway likes me and i don’t want anybody’s feelings hurt

i said well it should not matter because your my ” girlfriend” and that is what people do when they are going out

she said yeah but i like him too and i don’t want to ruin my chances with him

i said ‘ how is that supposed to make me feel

she said your acting like an asshole

i said i am not acting like an asshole

she let go of my hand

ernest hemingway’s car pulled up to the bus stop

i said i am not getting in

she smiled and said ‘ okay’

i got close to her face and tried to kiss her

she pushed me away

and ernest hemingway beeped

and yelled ‘ stay the fuck off my girlfriend’

she got in the car and kissed ernest hemingway

ernest hemingway sped off in his shitty car and it made ‘ loud noises’

i texted her ‘ i’m going to kill myself’

i woke up and remembered that it was not a dream

the whole thing happenned and but there never was jenny lewis or ernest hemingway

just some stupid girl and some loser who worked at subway or taco bell or some other shitty job like that

and it never took place in el paso texas

for thnxfgvngs day i will say thank god :

that we broke up

that i never really even liked her so it’s easy to forget what she looked like

that she ended up more unhappy than i was

for the other girls that i meet who are 1,000 times better

azns

my new found abilty to spot out sociopaths/bitches/losers/sadists/hippies

i don’t give a shit

i am sometimes hopeful for ‘ good things’ to happen to me

i feel overwhelmed in general

i want to lock myself in a room with a lap top and a fast internet connection and maybe a supply of vegan treats and rockstar energy drinks and bottles of adderall

i will be alone for two months

i did that

i felt simple

i felt alone

i did not feel happy but i never felt intense feelings of sadness

i went two months with out going outside or talking to a person

i went to buy some vegan treats twice but that was it

and i kept my head down and said nothing

it was easy

There’s no question about my love of the AMC tv show “Mad Men.” Despite not being much of a tv person (I haven’t had one since college), I adore the hisorically-driven, clever “Mad Men” and its remarkable aesthetic. On Tuesday I decided that my adoration of Joan Holloway might be a bit exclusive, and so I attempted to be generous with my affections and wear an outfit I felt was worthy Ms. Peggy Olson. Although she lacks to sheer sex appeal of Joan and the elegance and icy cool of Betty Draper, Peggy shouldn’t be discounted as an style icon in her own right, particularly as she matures into her position as head copy-writer at the end of Season Two. Her prim, tailored dresses, pillbox hats, and sweater sets all have a school-girl quality to them that is adorable and clever when done properly.

Thus, here you have my take on Peggy Olson. The dress is from Unqiue and cost a whole $3. I love its geometric buttons and the plaid top. Much like Peggy’s dresses, this one has a fitted but modest bodice with broad shoulders and a conservative length. My hatred of panty hose led me away from adherence to the vintage look and toward colored tights, which I think deepen the colors of the outfit and look quite interesting with the red-brown color of my much beloved t-straps.

In keeping with Peggy’s vibe I chose to wear a thin watch with a leather band, which is very out of character for me. I hate wearing watches, but my generous bosses gave me this watch on Monday and I decided that it was perfect for an early 60’s look. I also briefly wore (but had trouble keeping on) a strange and lovely fur crown I picked up at Unique which resembles Peggy’s pillbox hats.

Thus, here you have Emily as Peggy. While she’s no Joan, Peegy ain’t no slouch, and dressed like her I felt quite un-slouchy myself.

In my post from Friday I raved about my love of well-fitting, well-priced corduroys. I was so excited about my Friday pants that I decided to wear another pair on Monday. These I snagged on a recent trip to Unique Thirft Store. Originally from JCrew and priced at a wopping $79.99, they cost me $12.99, fit like a dream, and their bottle-green color is just lovely. As has clearly been demonstrated via this blog, I really enjoy wearing green and purple together and this shirt, too, fits wonderfully, so this outfit was a pleasure to wear, especially since I spent most of the day playing on the floor with the Baby C and needed to be able to move around comfortably.
