It’s been a bad week for Floridian sports stars when it comes to getting knocked out unconscious. First it was golfer Tiger Woods, knocked out by his wife and a golf club, and last night Roy Jones got it from a fellow boxer.

Basically..40-year-old Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out last night by Australian Danny Green, who retained his IBF World Cruiserweight title in Australia last night.

This opens the March 13th date up for the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout that would have been postponed to a later date, if Roy had won, due to a scheduled bout against Bernard Hopkins, in a battle of the grandads.

The bout will never happen with the outcome for Roy last night.

Danny Green and Roy Jones Jr....before fight

The AP reports…Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.

The 36-year-old Green retained his title and improved to 28-3 with his technical knockout over Jones at the Acer Arena, in the American’s first professional fight on foreign soil in his 20-year career.

It was only Jones’ sixth loss since 1989, along with 54 wins, 40 by knockout.

Green floored Jones with a right hand to the head after one minute. Green moved in to apply more pressure, and following a series of blows, English referee Howard Foster stopped the bout after just 122 seconds.

Jones offered no excuses for a defeat which could signal the end of his career.

“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny,” Jones said.

Green was almost apologetic for handing such a defeat to one of his boxing role models.

Green, who only came out of a 13-month retirement in April,

“That almost hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring,” he said.

“I am just overwhelmed – this is the greatest victory in my entire life.”

Jones Jr is now unlikely to continue in the ring and said: “I have got to take my hat off to Danny, it was a great performance. I guess now I go back into retirement.”

Jones had to win the Green fight for the Hopkins fight to happen on HBO on the March 13th date.

Roy Jones Jr. after fight

Now, hopefully boxing fans can be treated to a real battle between two boxers in their prime, and that is Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

In defeat,Roy Jones, Jr. officially hands March 13 HBO date to Arum, Pacquiao, and Mayweather…and I say Thank you Roy, I was a big fan of yours, won and lost bets based on my confidence in you.

Roy Jones, Jr. has earned his retirement, and I hope he goes back to broadcasting fights, starting with Mayweather and Pacquiao.

B-Hop will find someone else to knock out…he is still going strong at his advanced age,and as you can see, not every boxer can do what B-Hop does especially at his age.

Tiger Woods has officially been caught lying and cheating on his wife, as well as his two children. The usually hyper-private golf superstar has made the biggest slip up that most men who cheat commit, and that is to leave recorded messages and text messages on his …Smartphone.

The phone was smart, but the Tiger acted like an idiot.

No street skills.

Today,US MAGAZINE reports that Jaime Grubbs has released a voicemail she claims has the voice of Tiger Woods on it.

Meanwhile, Kalika Moquin has surfaced as the third woman other than Rachel Uchitel that Tiger Woods allegedly had an affair with, placing his statement of “transgressions” (plural) into a new light and makes me wonder about Elin Nordegren and that golf club.

You think..sounds like he may have left too many text messages on his phone. Women that I casually date, have checked my cellphone for messages from other women, and I am no where near marrying anybody, so I don’t know what he was thinking about.

The following is a transcript of the message to girlfriend number two….

“Hey. It’s , uh, it’s Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Um. Can you please take your name off my phone? My wife went through my phone and may uh, may be calling you. If you can, take your name off that, and if you can just have it has a number on the voicemail. Just have it as your number. Do me a huge favor. Okay?”

…See what I mean…a totally naive idiot.

My message to all the men out there that may like multiple women, or may be attractive enough to many women for whatever reasons and can have multiple women,…I have never in my 45 years witnessed any man be able to manage that situation.

The best thing to do is, if you think you may like to have girlfriends and casual sex outside of your marriage…then don’t get married.

It’s as simple as that.

Good luck Tiger…your family will need it. Think about your babies. Christmas in the Wood’s household sure will be interesting….Can he buy his way out of this one,we will just have to wait and see.

I intended to stick to a Local / National / International format for these Cowpens Droppings, but th

I intended to stick to a Local / National / International format for these Cowpens Droppings, but the Thanksgiving Holiday shook me out of the routine. It may have been the excess sugar coming in the door, or the commercial spirit hanging over the region, what with the jingle bells and lights already up over at the neighbors, or the change in routine with the meds and dearth of storytelling sessions with my mother, or the stoning of the Devil in Mecca this week, but I think the storm of American Football is what knocked me off the teeter totter.

Football still has never-ending television commentary coming from familiar voices from decades ago, but it is now bursting with statistics and comparisons and injury reports that boggle the mind. These days we have neuroscientists on the staff of all the professional football teams. They suspect that the repeated blows to the head are possibly “serious in the aggregate,” that the players are suffering long-term damage. I guess so, Sherlock. What we used to call mud they now call adverse soil conditions. The players from the old days are now riding along in wheel chairs on multiple drips wearing hospital gowns, unable to feed themselves, drooling a bit from the lower lip, they can’t speak, and whatever big money they once made is going over to medical expenses and permanent home care.

A particularly poignant documentary aired during the football orgy weekend. It featured John Mackey, once a hero for the original Baltimore Colts, a huge and supremely mobile tight end in his day. His wife did the talking for him. She expressed as much love for a spouse as I have ever seen in a documentary. She is spearheading a movement among pro football decision makers to do something about the safety standards and treatment of “concussions.” Bless her soul. The doctors now measure the brain with all the fancy equipment available, and then advise the players not to play in the next game or two. The players want to play of course. Something about job security. In my day, many of the players were cuckoo for the whole season and proud of it. Even at the high school level. I was a football dropout at 16, a social blemish in 1950’s Oklahoma, partially because I did not like the feeling waking up on the sofa at home, panicked by the time on the wall clock, telling my mother that I was late for practice, and she replying, “You already went to practice and got knocked out cold. Lie back down.” Seeing John Mackey, the best of the best in his day, a teammate of John Unitas and Lenny Moore, a champion and a half, vegetating in a wheel chair unable to speak, that got to me. His wife said there are a number of his peers in the same or similar condition.

Now about some of the commentary. Certain announcers try to convey an absolute mastery of statistics to the rube public. This has always irritated me; we are all mortals, so don’t patronize me.

A sensible statistic now and then can illustrate a trend or a truth. Some commentators cannot seem to discern wheat from chaff, the sensible from the gaudy. Statistics fly at us more and more these days, discernment less and less. The advances made in computing and data base design are the reason. In the World Series, I had to listen to Tim McCarver, a solid but mediocre catcher in his day and a more mediocre commentator now, explain to us “this hitter has taken the first pitch 18 out of the last 21 times at bat with runners at first and third in the middle innings of a night game in October.” So what, Tim? How would you know that if you didn’t have a 4th generation query system hitting at a master database? Some underpaid women have been working in a data processing pool at Major League Headquarters, pounding out the pitch by pitch information day and night for years, to catch up with and capture the entire history of baseball. Some geek with headphones is fiddling around in the technical truck with “what ifs” and “queries” so he can feed Tim inconsequential noise to relay to us baseball fans at the bars and on the sofas all over the known sports listeners’ world.

“Hey Sarge, did you know that Johnson throws a splitter over 80% of the time to foreign born switch hitters under 5 feet 10 when there’s no one on second base?”

“No, I never noticed that tendency. But get your head down, there’s incoming fire from the Taliban. And turn that radio down. It’s giving away our position.”

Modern commercials are sometimes good on first inspection. But they drive the damned things into your heart and brain like stakes into Dracula during mob frenzy. Ten straight days of “tailgate tested, tailgate approved.” I don’t even drink beer these days, but Bud Light is telling me for the 200th time this week that their product is tested and approved. Huh? And how can a 60-minute game take three and a half hours to finish? The ads, stupid. The ads. And how do all the networks synchronize the ads so that one cannot escape them even with a high tech remote control device and a trigger finger? It is a conspiracy among the networks, I am sure. They synch the weather reports and used car ads, the breaking headlines and the cooking shows. Don’t tell me they don’t plan it. They all play golf together. We are captured.

I am tempted to remark more on the subtle racism in sports, but it might be unfair and I do not wish to bring in controversial negativity. It’s Thanksgiving and Christmas. Times are surely better now than when I grew up in a segregated world. We have reps from most of the demographic groups at most levels of football. The pompom girls, the defensive linemen, the safeties, even the quarterbacks and the casts in the beer ads. There is always talk that it is more difficult for an African American to get a job in coaching. Those jobs are filled more equitably than they were in our youth. But what about team owners? Are they not all white? Who’s working on that?

Enough. Coaches are being fired and their contracts bought as we speak. Commentators have new meta-musil to chew on. Hand me that remote. Who’s number One?

… about Canadian football, and how it differs from American football (not that I knew anything about American football to start with, but apparently the field is longer and wider and the game is much faster. I hope you all had a relaxing and wonderful holiday. I hope it was filled with love, family, warm memories and great food too. We had a terrific time here as well, even if it was leaner than we’d have liked.

Nothing eventful to report here. We made due with what we had on hand, but we also spent some great family time. Headed back to the library on Friday to return some books which couldn’t be renewed, then went shopping. My wife and I are non-traditionalists, but we had a nice time enjoying each other’s company. It was great. I watched a whole lot of football, to my son’s aggravation, because it keeps him off the Wii. Just a really nice, relaxing weekend with no stress or worries and a lot of love and togetherness.

How about you? Today, to show you all how grateful I am to you and for you (and because I have absolutely nothing to add to the conversation beyond what I’ve already said, heh), I’d like the comments to be wide open for you. I know my buds abroad didn’t celebrate a holiday, but I’d love for them to chime in too.

What did you do this past (holiday) weekend? Whether you were celebrating Thanksgiving or not, you probably did something. For those in the States, did you have a traditional Thanksgiving gathering? What did you eat? Who did you visit or receive as guests? What time does your family sit and eat? Let me know.

For those not celebrating a holiday, did you have plans? Was it “Black Friday” for you too, even though it wasn’t the day after Thanksgiving?
Here’s how mine went: Out of all the things to forget for Thanksgiving dinner, I forgot a roas

Here’s how mine went:

Out of all the things to forget for Thanksgiving dinner, I forgot a roasting pan. My husband Tim reminds me of this while he starts the dinner during the football game. I said, “No problem, I’ll run out and get one.” He said, “No, I can work with a baking sheet.” We use the most awesome invention ever called Reynolds Oven Bags. He said we’ll check on the turkey periodically, drain it and tie it back up and it’ll work just fine.

Meanwhile, mom stuffs potato peelings down our garbage disposal. It backed up and our sink looked like stinky potato gunk soup. So we try a plunger which makes the peelings spurt out the other drain. My dad loosens up the screws on the pipe and lets it seep out slowly. This doesn’t work so my dad and Tim take the sink apart and snake out the drain in the backyard, filling the yard up with potato peels.

While that’s happening, I notice smoke coming out of the oven. I open it and flames come out. I scream and Tim runs in from the backyard, yelling, “WHAT?” and I say “FIRE!” so he opens up the door, gets a pan, grabs the turkey, cuts a hole in the bag and lets it drain. Crisis number one averted.

Then, as Tim was about to put the sink back together, he noticed a screw missing and he asked my dad if he saw it. Dad said he drained a bucket down the toilet and Tim said, “The screw was in there.” So he had the not-so-pleasant task of searching for a screw in the toilet. Luckily, my dad went through a very unorganized tray of nuts, bolts and screws and found the perfect one. Crisis number two averted.

The turkey and everything else was saved, saving us a trip to Panda Express ala Christmas Story.

Other than that, my day was awesome! How about yours?

I don’t advocate domestic violence by any one, and I support abiding by the law, and being as helpful to the police as possible, but I also think that is wise not to make any incriminating statement’s to the authorities, given if the statement’s may be interpreted as a confession.

I understand…

In that case, I suggest saying nothing, unless your attorney is present,no matter what the police threaten,…

..especially if you may find yourself being guilty.

That is why I am not surprised by Tiger and Elin Woods reluctance to make any further statements to the police today, and I do not blame them for postponing the police interview until Sunday.

I do not expect them to make any statement on Sunday, outside of whatever minor announcement by whatever attorney the Wood’s managed to hire this holiday weekend to help them resolve this messy domestic incidence.

The interview was supposed to take place after 3 p.m. Saturday but was postponed shortly beforehand by Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG.

On Friday, troopers were asked to return today, said Sgt. Kim Montes, a FHP spokeswoman.

Woods’ wife, Elin, told troopers seeking to interview Woods that he was sleeping. They agreed to return the next day.

“The Florida Highway Patrol has received information that Tiger Woods and his wife were not available to be interviewed by state troopers, as we had previously scheduled,” said Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol. “Troopers were asked to return tomorrow (November 29th).”

Sgt. Montes has said in an interview that Mr. Woods could be charged with violations but “we always want to give the driver an opportunity to respond first.”

Hopefully they will take some quality time and hire some good legal counsel, and maybe seek some advice from Kobe Bryant , Shaq, Lionel Richie, Michael Jordan, and his many wealthy sports star peers for some good strategy to get out of this very embarrassing public domestic dispute .

They all been through similar issues with their wives and ex-wives. Make an appointment with Kobe Bryant’s jeweler, you may need his services right about now.

This is gong to cost you Tiger, way more than the 4 million dollars that Kobe spent on that make up ring, but it was one of the reason’s why he did not end up in divorce court.

All of this over his little fling with some skank, RachelUchitel,…it could not have been worth it.

The 2009 Cadillac Escalade sustained between $5,000 and $8,000 in damage to the front right and left, troopers said. The left and right rear-side passenger windows were also broken out, but the FHP hasn’t determined how that happened, Montes said.

I think that Tiger is more concerned with the cost of the damage to his family, his wife, his reputation, and his career.

He can always buy a new car…

In Britain we may not celebrate Thanksgiving, but we certainly celebrate the extra NFL action.

Tradition dictates that both the Detroit Lions and te Dallas Cowboys and this Thanksgiving they had mixed fortunes.

In the first, the Lions (2-9) were well beaten 34-12 by the Green Bay Packers (7-4). The Packers dominated the game, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing for 348 yards with three touchdown passes

The victory gave the Packers their third win in a row and was aided by Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who threw four interceptions, two of which were picked off by Charles Woodson.

Next up was the Oakland Raiders (3-8) travelling to Dallas. The Cowboys (8-3) had won their previous two games on Thanksgiving under coach Wade Phillips and were never troubled by the Raiders.

They went out to a 17-0 lead at the half, before winning 24-7. Tony Romo threw two touchdowns, including one to the ever improving Miles Austin.

Since 2006, there has been a third game on Thanksgiving, to appease those who believed it was unfair that Dallas and Detriot got to play at home on America’s favourite holiday. This year, the New York Giants (6-5) travelled to Denver.

The Broncos (7-4) had won their first six games but came into this one on the back of four straight defeats. They were able to stop the rot with a 26-6 win over the Giants.

Defensive end Elvis Dumervil sacked Giants quarterback Eli Manning twice to extend his NFL leading sack total to 14. Matt Prater kicked four field goals.

The rest of the weekend’s action is wrapped up tomorrow and Monday night. It is the Monday night game that is the weekend’s main attraction as the New England Patriots (7-3) travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints (10-0).

When they hired him, I had my suspicions.

Sure, Ron Zook hadn’t been Steve Spurrier. But the hiring of Urban Meyer to replace Zook by the University of Florida in 2005 struck me as another episode of college football’s version of “Catch a Rising Star.”

Now, as an alumnus, I’m hearing (and seeing) some disturbing sounds (and sights) that might put me in line for a reprisal of the Yoda role.

By Cole

Being a sports-loving cat can can get you in trouble in Croatia. When a stray cat wandered onto the field of a soccer match (they call it “football”) in Sebenik, the goalie for the visiting Medjimurje Cakovec team, Ivan Banovic, carried it to safety and put it through the fence under the scoreboard.

Then the referee penalized Banovic with a “yellow card” for leaving the field without permission.

I’m wondering what the stupid referee expected the players to do with a cat on the field. Trample it to death, kick it for a goal, or hit it with the soccer ball?

Even though Banovic’s team lost 0-1 to Sebenik, fans cheered for him the rest of the game to register their approval of his kitty kindness.

Maybe some soccer fan can tell me what a yellow card is. Does soccer have different colored cards for different penalties? Do players collect the cards and trade them? Do their uniforms have special pockets to hold the cards while they’re playing?

Instead of throwing flags, just imagine American football referees — I mean real football, with the flattened-out ball that bounces funny — handing out cards to naughty players.

Not to miss a chance for product placement, Hallmark could provide the cards, inscribed with poignant verses reminding players of their neglected mothers and moving them to tears, causing even more time-outs and extending already-interminable games into all-day events.

Referees’ flags would become hankies for weeping tight ends, and teary commiserations would be shared during huddles, which would be renamed “support groups.”

Somehow, I think cards would take all the fun out of the chasing and tackling, although all the male bonding would probably cause a marked increase in butt-fondling.

Breaking News- Legendary golf champion Tiger Woods has been seriously injured in a car accident in florida.

The AP reports Tiger hit a fire hydrant and a tree near his Florida home, authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the PGA star hit the fire hydrant and tree as he pulled out of his driveway in his 2009 Cadillac sport utility vehicle. His airbags did not deploy, and he was not wearing his seatbelts, which is a violation of Florida law.

Woods was taken to Health Central Hospital. Officials there did not have record of him as a patient, though the news release said Woods’ injuries were serious.

Eyeshield 21 [Episode 111] The Devil Bats Move Out?! Everyone was practicing hard in their final tra

Eyeshield 21 [Episode 111] The Devil Bats Move Out?!

Everyone was practicing hard in their final training before the match against the Shinryuji Nagas. Coach Doburoku pulled Yukimitsu aside and told him that he will be making his debut in the next game and he holds the slim chance to their victory.

Before the match day, Shinryuji Nagas also had a team briefing. Everyone was told not to be lazy or complacent against Deimon Devil Bats.

Deimon Devil Bats were rated at 0.7% to win the game. Coach Doburoku then put his sake drinking habit on line and if they lost the game, he will never be drinking another drop of sake.

It was also surprising that Agon arrived early for the match as normally he will be late for matches. Agon is totally hype up and fully focuses on the match ignoring anything outside the field. Shinryuji Nagas begin the game with the kick off and Deimon Devil Bats on the receiving end.

Eyeshield 21 [Episode 112] Devils vs Dragons?!

The Kanto Tournament begins with Shinryuji Nagas kicking off. Eyeshield 21 retrieves the ball at his end of the field and starting running at offense but failed to gain much ground. The following offenses also failed with Montakun failed to catch any of Hiruma’s passes due to Ikkyu’s tight defense and Ikkyu caught the ball and forces a turnover.

Agon replaces another player on the offense and scored a touchdown. He later forced Unsui to use the “Dragonfly Formation”, a strategy they normally use when they have 20 points lead. Shinryuji Nagas scored another touchdown with the play. Shinryuji Nagas is leading 14-0.

Eyeshield 21 [Episode 113] The 12th Athlete?!

14-0 down and Deimon Devil Bats is completely destroyed in this game. They failed to attack on the offense and Eyeshield 21 Devil Bat Ghost and Devil Bat Hurricane is being easily tamed by Agon. The first half ends with a score line of 32-0 and Deimon Devil Bats failing to obtain a point.

Hiruma uses reverse psychology to play his next move. He told the entire team that they were done and asked them to prepare for the following year and not to get injured. Everyone felt otherwise and believes that every other player is still fighting to win it. They regain the offense with the onside kick and there was a substitution!

Yukimitsu finally make his debut in the second half. Yukimitsu spend 6 months secretly studying the moves of Agon and Ikkyu just for this game and scored a touchdown, somehow after fumbling a catch which he recovers. Their first point of the game scored against the Shinryuji Nagas.

Eyeshield 21 [Episode 114] The Power of Rank and File?!

Hiruma is lost in ideas on how to stop Agon and Shinryuji Nagas. He wants to prevent them from getting another point and ordered Sena to blitz Agon at light speed on every play. The move failed and Shinryuji scored another touchdown and the score now stood as 32-7.

Sena continue blitzing Agon despite all attempts fails to stop him. However during one play, Sena manage to block a pass and everyone rushes for the scramble. Surprising the ball was retrieve by Jumonji was dashes to the line but he was stop by Agon Kongo just before the line. Jumonji then realize how powerful of an enemy he is and vows not to give up and took the final step across the line. Deimon Devil Bats manage to close the gap by 7 points.

Meanwhile, all the blitzing had took a strained on Sena’s knees. Hiruma called for a timeout for a medical assessment on his knees. Coach Doburoku applied some ice on his knees to reduce the soreness so that he can continue playing but it all depends when his knees will give in.

At the other end, Agon ordered that the continuation of the Dragonfly formation. Agon also had the cold aura and had acknowledged that Sena is one of the top players in the league.

Eyeshield 21 [Episode 115] Fighting to be Number 1?!

Shinryuji Nagas are leading the game with Deimon Devil Bats closing the gaps fast. Unsui suggested they attempt a field goal to finish off the game which they converted. They now lead with a 21 points gap.

Sena’s legs were then at his limits. He went to the bench for some rest and light treatment. Hiruma and the team continue their offense without Sena through various types of passes to Yukimitsu, N. Taki and Taro Raimon. Montakun then suggested a crazy idea by passing to him at the touchdown line and he will catch it. Montakun was up against Ikkyu who got the ball but Montakun snatches it out of his hands and scored a touchdown.

At the restart, Sena tried to stop Agon (Agon beat him using his trademark Devil Bat Ghost run) but his legs gave in. Deimon Devil Bats uses their final timeout and Coach Doburoku told him to get some rest or he won’t be running again. Hiruma objected and causes Musashi to punch him in disagreement.

When the game restart, Sena came rushing towards Unsui and knock the ball out of his hands before he can pass to Ikkyu. They were ignoring Agon and fully focus on the ball and this play irritates Agon.

Feeling so proud to be from the Caribbean today.

The Caribbean quartet of Hal Linton, Melanie Fiona, Shontelle and Vita Chambers performed as part of the half-time show today at the NFL game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers at the Ford Field in Detroit. The four were part of a six-artiste set from Universal/Motown performing a tribute to Motown on its 50th anniversary.

Just to put it in perspective, previous performers at the half-time shows at NFL Thanksgiving Day games in Detroit (which has the oldest Thanksgiving Day Classic tradition – going all the way back to 1934) have included Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton. And now that list includes our Caribbean quartet.

And they rocked it out – every one of them. Check out the vid below.

Happy Thanksgiving! While I am terribly sad that I am unable to celebrate Massachusetts’ favorite ho

Happy Thanksgiving! While I am terribly sad that I am unable to celebrate Massachusetts’ favorite holiday in my beloved home state, I have been reading about colonial American history all week, which has made me feel at least somewhat more at home. So in honor of Thanksgiving, here are two passages from David Hackett Fischer’s Albion’s Seed explaining how Massachusetts is responsible for the two best things about Thanksgiving. First: pie…

“New England baking took many forms. The ritual Thanksgiving dinner came mainly from the oven—baked Turkey, baked squash, baked beans, and baked pies in vast profusion. The pie, in particular, became a Yankee folk art. Harriet Beecher Stowe in her novel Oldtown Folks celebrated the social history of the New England pie:

The pie is an English institution, which, planted on American soil, forthwith ran rampant and burst forth into an untold variety of genera and species. Not merely the old mince pie, but a thousand strictly American seedlings from that main stock, evinced the power of American housewives to adapt old institutions to new uses. Pumpkin pies, cranberry pies, huckleberry pies, cherry pies, green-currant pies, peach, pear, and plum pies, custard pies, apple pies, Marlborough-pudding pies,—pies with top crusts, and pies without,—pies adorned with all sorts of fanciful flutings and architectural strips laid across and around, and otherwise varied, attested the boundless fertility of the feminine mind, when once let loose in a given direction.” (138)

…and second: American football:

“Classical American football slowly took shape in New England during the eighteenth century as an elaborately rationalized and rule-bound version of an old English folk sport. Football contests between schools were common by the early nineteenth century in eastern Massachusetts, where teams from academies and town schools played each other on a regular basis. A marble monument on Boston Common quietly commemorates the “first football organization in America,” which played there long before the intercollegiate contest between Princeton and Rutgers.” (149-150)

So, you’re welcome, America. According to Professor Fischer, not only did New England invent Thanksgiving*, we invented pumpkin pie and American football. And now, I am off to the pub; a poor substitute, but what can you do?

*Technically, the United States government invented Thanksgiving, but you get my basic drift here.

And yes, Daddy, I listened to Alice’s Restaurant. What kind of Thanksgiving would it be without Arlo and Officer Obie?

Resident AFC South leaders Indianapolis Colts made it ten wins from ten after narrowly overcoming the Baltimore Ravens, 17-15, thanks to a field goal from former Ravens kicker Matt Stover.

The Colts (10-0) kept the Ravens (5-5) out of the end zone, with Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff converting five field goals. All this despite Peyton Manning throwing two interceptions and injuries on the Indy defense.

Running back Mike Bell goes over the New Orleans Saints - nfl.com

Over in the NFC, the New Orleans saints matched the Colt’s perfect record with a 38-9 demolition of the ever woeful Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-9).

The worrying thing for the rest of the NFL is that the Saints (10-0) might just be getting better. Quarterback Drew Brees didn’t throw an interception for the first time in five games and his offensive line didn’t allow a sack for the first time since mid October.

AFC West battle

In terms of the standings, probably the most important game on Sunday was the San Diego Chargers going on the road to visit the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos (6-4) started the season quickly winning their first six, but a 32-3 drubbing by the Chargers (7-3) means they’ve lost four in a row and have surrendered the lead of the AFC West to San Diego.

Bills post Jauron

Now is around the time of season when NFL GMs and owners get itchy feet and decide to write off a season and get ready for the next.

The Buffalo Bills (3-7) became the first franchise to sack their head coach. During the week, Dick Jauron was replaced by defensive co-ordinator Perry Fewell.

Interim coach Fewell came close to a deubt win but a David Garrard touchdown pass to Mike Sims-Walker with just 56 seconds left on the clock, means the Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4) beat the Bills 18-15.

Shocks

The shocks of the weekend came from the Oakland Raiders (3-7) and the Kansas City Chiefs (3-7).

The Raiders beat the AFC North leading Cincinnati Bengals (7-3), coming back from 17-10 down with 30 seconds to go.

Raiders wide receiver Darius Heyward-Bey (12) challenges Leon Hall (29) for possession - nfl.com

Wide receiver Louis Murphy caught a 29 yard touchdown pass from Bruce Gradowski with half a minute left to tie the game.

But no overtime was needed, as the Bengals fumbled the kick off, Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski was able to kick the winning field goal with 15 seconds to go.

The Chiefs did need overtime to create the other shock of the weekend, beating reigning Superbowl Champions the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4), 27-24

Matt Cassel’s 61-yard pass to Chris Chambers set up the game winning 22-yard field goal from Ryan Succop.

Two bad teams can make a good game

The Detriot Lions (2-8) and the Cleveland Browns (1-9), possibly the two worst teams in the league, battled out a real shootout, with the Lions winning 38-37, thanks to a last second Matt Stafford touchdown pass to Brandon Pettigrew.

Other results

Chicago Bears 20 – 24 Philadelphia Eagles

Dallas Cowboys 7 – 6 Washington Redskins

Green Bay Packers 30 – 24 San Francisco 49ers

Minnesota Vikings 35 – 9 Seattle Seahawks

New England Patriots 31 – 14 New York Jets

New York Giants 34 – 31 Atlanta Falcons

St. Louis Rams 13 – 21 Arizona Cardinal

Tennessee Titans 20 – 17 Houston Texans

Full results and stats at ESPN or the BBC
