My original plan was just to create a wishlist for the person who picked my name when we draw lots for our exchange gifts but I thought it would be better if more people would be able to read it. Considering the Maeliztas Christmas Party ‘09, my birthday, and Christmas are coming. More gifts, see? Kidding. Anyways, here is the list of the things I want this Christmas:

1. Customized Shirt

Sm Fairview. In front of Burger King. I think the price ranges from Php250 to Php300, depending on the size. Please make me a ‘Large’, but that still depends on how much I will be eating this yuletide season so if in the Christmas party you saw me and thought ‘Wooooeee, he needs an XL’, then go for XL. On the other hand you might also be thinking “Large? Are you serious? You have a fucking slim-sexy-mouthwatering figure and you are telling me you’re a ‘Large’?”, then go get me an XS, but that’s just me being humble so.. Seriously though, please get me a Large Black Shirt with this image on the front:

I made this with MS Paint, can you believe it? Please answer no.

Anyways, copy then paste, save it to your flashdisk, then ask ate tagagawa ng T-shirt to print it on the Black shirt. I asked them if that was possible and they said yes. Please, please, please, pretty please. I really prefer this one over the things I will be writing down next so please give me this one if it won’t give you so much trouble. I’d appreciate it.

2. Starbucks design-your-own (?) tumbler

This one costs a little more, I think about Php400, so if you plan on buying me this one, tell me beforehand so that I can pay you Php100 or so. But as I mentioned earlier, I would really prefer the first one.

3. Original DVD copy of any of these movies

Pan’s Labyrinth (Maribel Verdu)

Little Children (Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson)

The Illusionist (Edward Norton)

American History X (Norton again)

But I would really prefer number 1 on the list. So..

Other Stuff:

For my millionaire friends and generous people who are kind enough to send me any of these, you can do so. Here’s my address: #51785 Kinilaw St., ….. kidding. Anyways, for the sake of writing them down:

1. UST Jacket. Black. With a touch of yellow. ‘UST’ written on the back.

2. UST body bag. I am a proud Thomasian.

3. Starbucks Planner or Powerbooks Planner

4. Bob Ong books. I lost all of my copies except MacArthur and PLnH. People really need to learn how to return things they borrowed.

So there. I am really excited about the party. I will tell my supervisor later that I won’t be able to attend the company’s party since it will be done on the same day.See you And See you not for my online friends but I wish you a very happy merry December and Christmas! I never used this many smiley on any of my entries, you see how much I want the shirt?

Oh and did I mention that I want the first one for my exchange gift gift?

5. American History X

Here’s a film I was very reluctant towards watching. My friend continually recommended it to me yet I thought with a name like “American History X” it would only be boring or another glamorization of our country (my thoughts on it are for another blog). You could also say I had similar thoughts going into American Beauty, yet I wound up holding it in a fairly high regard. And wouldn’t you know it? American History X became an immediate favorite of mine once the credits came. The film features my favorite performance by Edward Norton, who really hits the ball running during his Neo-Nazi scenes (particularly the lunch/dinner table fight). Interestingly, however, it’s Edward Furlong who manages to feel more convincing as a white supremacist (though at times it seems he’s just moving along without much care), despite Norton’s near Oscar-worthy performance. Regardless, the performances by both and the entire cast are nothing less than stellar; and the film’s message still holds strong (if heard several times before).

“Who do you hate Danny?”
“I hate anyone that is a white Protestant.”
“Why? “
“There a burden to the advancement of the white race. Some of them are alright I guess…”
“None of them are ****ing alright Danny ok? They’re all a bunch of ****in’ freeloaders. Remember what Cam said, ‘we don’t know em we don’t wanna know em.’ They’re the ****ing enemy. Now what don’t you like about them and say it with some ****ing conviction!”
“I hate the fact that’s cool to be black these days.”
“Good.”
“I hate this hip-pop ****in’ influence on white-****in’ suburbia.
“Good.”
“And I hate Tabitha Soren and all there Zionist MTV ****ing pigs telling us we should get along. Save the rhetorical bull**** Hilary Rodham Clinton cause it ain’t gonna ****in’ work.”
“That’s some of the best **** I’ve heard come out of your mouth.”

4. The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight-Yes, I know this has become the most talked about film for the past decade (if not more) and that it’s praised to no end, but this is all with good reason. Just like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Dark Knight has a lot of content between the characters and story which pushed the runtime close to three hours for both. Fortunately, the pacing is excellent and for my first viewing in theaters, I kept saying to myself the same words YouTube user MRBLACK spoke in his review, “I just didn’t want it to end.” The cast were overall very stellar with the possible exception of Christian Bale when in the Batsuit (and I don’t think I really have to mention Ledger’s amazing performance). Aaron Eckhart also pulled off his role with ease with the Two Face sections being about as effective as The Joker’s. I’ll still insist that this is the real Best Picture of last year, not Slumdog Millionaire (which was a good film, but nothing more). Though we obviously want to see Nolan direct more for Batman, it’s definitely going to be tough, if not impossible to top this for many viewers, including myself.

“Do you want to know why I use a knife? Guns are too quick. You can’t savor all the… little emotions. In… you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?”

3. The Green Mile

Going into this movie, I was almost certain that I would like it and that it would be one to keep me coming back. Interestingly, this was only the case partially, as I absolutely loved the film but I have seldom given it a full viewing after my first one. While the length didn’t begin to drag until the last ten or so minutes, it’s still a lot to swallow just like Schindler’s List. But for a film like this where the execution is top-notch, I don’t mind the length (the cut of Das Boot I own is just shy of three and a half hours, yet it’s right below my Top 20). Director Frank Darabont has put characters in all his films that we instinctively want to hate. However, unlike The Mist where Marcia Gay Harden was beyond intolerable, Doug Hutchison as Percy Wetmore felt despicable but not in an absurd form. There’s a lot to love about The Green Mile, ranging from the excellent cast (Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morris, Barry Pepper, Jeffrey DeMunn, Michael Jeter, James Cromwell; the list goes on), to the wonderful score, strong emotions superbly carried out with strong dialogue, superb directing and cinematography; the film has a lot going for it. Regardless of the low number of viewings, The Green Mile remains a film that will stick with me is the one film that got me to cry for more than a few seconds (try close to three minutes, I felt like such a baby).

“Do you believe that if a man repents enough for what he done wrong, then he’ll get to go back to the time that was happiest for him and live there forever? Could that be what heaven’s like?”
“I just about believe that very thing.”
“I had a young wife when I was eighteen. We spent the summer in the mountains, made love every night. After we would talk sometimes till the sun came up, and she’d lay there, bare breasted in the fire light… that was my best time.”

2. Planet of the Apes (1968)

It was a good while before I finally got around to seeing the original version of Planet of the Apes. Having seen the remake several times before, I was honestly surprised at how much hate it had attracted; even those who claimed to have never seen the original condemned Tim Burton’s remake. Finally, my friend and I decided to give the first film a chance over the summer and after the ending, we finally understood the comparisons. Now, I still wouldn’t say I hate the remake; it’s just horrible when compared to its father since they have little in-common. The original Planet of the Apes gives us far stronger characters and more clever twists in its reversal roles and, unless you’ve seen the DVD cover before watching the movie, will downright shock you at the end. Even so, I was still left stunned and silenced by the time we see Charlton Heston slamming the beach sand at the sight before him. Planet of the Apes is a movie that takes the concept of how truly weak we are as humans for a backbone. And though it’s fairly implausible, the film still proves a potent point and leads to a wonderful satire of our habits. By the time it’s over, one can’t help but feel thunderstruck.

“Imagine me needing someone. Back on Earth I never did. Oh, there were women. Lots of women. Lots of love-making but no love. You see, that was the kind of world we’d made. So I left, because there was no one to hold me there.”

1. The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption-I can’t think of many films that I’ve seen well over 20 times and still never get sick of watching. But The Shawshank Redemption is such a film and each subsequent viewing only makes me think of and realize more to appreciate about it. At first, the film barely scraped my Top 10 but before long I simply couldn’t get enough of it. A huge reason this movie sticks out more than the others is for the two lead actors (Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman) who both feel as down to earth as any on-screen character is going to get. They talk and act like us while emitting a vibe that helps them stand out, but not to the point that they feel all that different from any of us. Connections between the two and the supporting cast feel legitimate with a sense of honesty and compassion amongst all of them (whether positive or negative). There’s so much to love and admire in the film, despite the fact it takes place almost entirely in a prison. Anyone who hasn’t seen this movie I highly urge to just purchase and watch ASAP since I feel this isn’t just a must-see, but a must-own to continually view and enjoy. If all else fails, this is the movie that always manages to help me bounce back from a lousy day.

“I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can’t be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.”

Saturday night, my friends got a group together to see Inglourious Basterds at the Student Union.*

Then three of us went and ate pastries at a local bakery.

And then me and my friend Katie watched American History X** and did arts and crafts.

THAT’S WHAT A GIRLS NIGHT SHOULD BE BITCHES!

*Okay, I think I liked Inglourious Basterds EVEN MORE now, which I didn’t think was possible. My opinion of it grew since I saw it the first time around anyway, but this time put me over the edge into the land of thinking: Since they’ve opened it up to ten slots for the Best Picture nomination, it could maybe quite possibly be a contender. Which would be a nice change of pace from the depressing, sentimental shit, but whatever, that’s just me.

I think it might also have been the audience I was with this time around, where we’re all college students laughing at the dark humor instead of just going “Ah, the violence and the um… WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!” which still happened. I actually noticed a few people leave the theater after the first time you meet the Basterds. I could say “Oh, I understand,” but geez, I don’t. I’m no longer sensitized to this, apparently. The people who remained were awesome and every time Brad Pitt opened his mouth there were laughs, which was awesome. So this was the “Dark Humor Ha Ha Ha, I see What You Did THERE, Quentin Tarantino” screening.

** Story of my life. It is always “Hey, let’s what a very violent movie while (fill in the blank).” Usually baking or sewing, this time water color-collage. Also, I don’t think I could do this movie justice with a review, so we’re not going there. I know that for me this was the second time I had seen it, so I knew when to close my eyes at the hard moments and it was still really powerful.

Hip-hop star Method Man (“The Wackness”) and Angelic Zambrana (“Precious”) have joined the cast for “The Mortician 3D.”

Billed as a gritty, urban drama, the backers also said they are in talks with Tom Hardy (“Bronson”) and Edward Furlong (“American History X”) to join the cast.

“Mortician” is produced by New York label Belladonna Prods.’ Rene Bastian, Linda Moran and Adam Folk, the team behind “Transamerica,” and U.K.-based Full Circle Films.

The picture is set to shoot this month in Louisiana.

The film also counts Molinare and the U.K.’s Film and Music Entertainment as backing partners and is being repped at AFM by startup sales and finance house Stealth Media Group.

The $6 million project is written and will be helmed by Gareth Maxwell Roberts and produced by Rhys Thomas.

SMG was formed in November 2008 by Sean O’Kelly, founder of Go for It Entertainment with film producers Michael Cowan and Jason Piette of Spice Factory.

“The Mortician 3D” marks the first project to attract funding from MediaPro, which was recently launched as a minimum guarantee cashpool with an exclusive relationship with Stealth Media.

(Audrey) Yesterday evening, Thane and I were watching a movie on TV called American History X. I won

(Audrey) Yesterday evening, Thane and I were watching a movie on TV called American History X. I won’t spoil the film, but for those that haven’t seen it, it focuses on racial tensions, particularly a group of Nazi-inspired white supremacists in California. Being on TV, the film was interrupted by commercials every 20 minutes or so and this being India, more than half the commercials were for skin whitening cream.

Skin whitening is a multi-billion dollar business in India, with many of the major international companies participating (e.g. vaseline, dove, ponds, etc.). The theme of their commercials is always the same—already amazingly light-skinned Indian woman is put out because she’s too dark. Usually, she’s put out because a man rejected her or failed to notice her. She uses a skin whitening cream for a few days, goes up (or down, I’m not sure) two shades on the skin-shade-scale and lives happily ever after with her new, beautiful, white self… and her man. See skin scale and desired results here–

If you have 30 seconds, you can watch what I would call a progressive whitening commercial where the desired item is not a husband but a job.

Now in most contexts, I find the Indian obsession with white skin in a nation full of brown people nothing more than just utterly bizarre (akin to America’s obsession with thinness given that most of us sport a little cushin’ for the pushin’). In my more cynical moments, I see traces of colonial values and standards of beauty that Indians are still eating up today. But when you’re watching a film about racism and white supremacy, somehow the issue seems to take on a more serious tone.

Can the idea that white is beautiful be harmful? In a sense, this is one more of those kind of twisted things that I actually benefit from. I’m pretty white myself and this standard makes my husband, one of the world’s whitest men, basically a god in South Asia. But what about all the Indian women repeatedly being told to be ashamed of their dark skin? What about the loose connection between caste and skin color? Perhaps this isn’t just a game of shades and skin, but rather an issue where self-respect and the value of human individuals are on the line. At what point do thing go beyond bizarre, even beyond sad, to downright despicable?

To bring is back to my own culture for a moment, what do we make of an image such as this—a projection, if you will, of President Obama after using “Fair and Lovely” skin cream?

On my homepage for MSN when coming on line, I noticed that one of the sections was on “Movies

On my homepage for MSN when coming on line, I noticed that one of the sections was on “Movies Men Cry to”. So decided to not only read it but blog about it and see whether I can actually imagine any of my male friends crying to these movies.

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is the first up in the list, I can imagine possibly a boy crying if they relate to Elliott and would had to say goodbye to there best alien friend.

The Shawshank Redemption – I have to admit that I did not cry at this one, but have seen it in a few lists of movies that make men cry. Maybe its the male bonding factor?

American History X – I have yet to see this movie.

The Champ – I have seen this and cried, can understand more why men would cry as well.

Dead Poets Society – Carpe Diem . . . I think anyone of either sex who does not shed a tear or at least fill up at this movie is made of stone or something.

Field Of Dreams – a story about a son’s search for his father “build it and he will come . . . can understand with the father/son relationship being the main topic how it could effect men of all ages.

Forrest Gump – Everyone must shed a few tears at different parts of this film, as Forrest is just not smart enough at times to realise what is going on around him.

Gladiator - I guess this one is because of his love for his family.

Glory – Another which I have not seen.

The Green Mile – This one actually broke my heart, and has to be another of the if you did not shed a tear or fill up you are made of stone movies.

Kramer vs Kramer – The breakfast scene at the end is so sad, can understand the father/son relationship again.

My Life – This is really is heartbreaking, a man making videos for his child to watch so he knows him.

Hotel Rwanda – Have yet to see this movie.

Saving Private Ryan – I found this really hard to watch, mainly for the reason that its so heartbreaking with how real it all looks and seems.

Schindler’s List – This is on my Sky+ to watch

Seabiscuit – Yet to see this movie

Stand By Me – Yet to see this movie

United 93 – I found this really awful to watch, and I am sure everyone else who has seen it has as well.

Watership Down – I cried my eyes out when watching this as a child, although cannot remember much of it now.

It’s A Wonderful Life – It must be quite impossible not to cry to this, what would happen if you were never born.

Original Source: MSN Entertainment

So my question is to the male population out there, which movies make you cry?

Do they feature in this list?

Ok, I wanted to mix it up and add something other than sports. This was absolutely impossible to do.

Ok, I wanted to mix it up and add something other than sports. This was absolutely impossible to do. Cutting down this list was awful, and I could have put at least 10 other movies in some of these slots. Just missed the cut: Few Good Men, Saving Private Ryan, The Wrestler, Dark Knight, Old School. But first I have to add an Honorable Mention.

Honorable Mention- SEVEN- 3 amazing actors at their best. Morgan Freemen couldn’t be casted better. Kevin Spacey is creepy as all hell as John Doe, he just plays it to a tee. Brad Pitt is another perfect casting job. BEST MOMENT- The absolutely intense, twisted ending. It is so brilliantly written and messed up, that it gets me every time.

10. RUDY- I have a soft spot for two things in movies: underdogs and true stories. Rudy is both. The kid had nothing in terms of athletic ability, and he followed his dream, and the only thing that got from the mill to Notre Dame is his heart and undying determination. BEST MOMENT- Rudy getting the sack at the end and getting carried off the field. I get chills whenever I watch it.

9. GLADIATOR- Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix play off each other so well, and they carry the movie by themselves. The visuals are amazing; the coliseum recreation is stunning. As good as Crowe is, Phoenix is the best part of the movie. He plays the villain so well, and there is no way you can even remotely like him. BEST MOMENT- When Maximus rallies the slaves in their first battle in the coliseum, then reveals himself to Commodus.

8. AMERICAN HISTORY X- I think Edward Norton is one of the best actors around, and while he is great in Fight Club, this is his best performance in my opinion. The use of black and white to show flashbacks and the narrative of Edward Furlong fits the movie so well. Furlong puts in a great performance, and the scenes of Norton before and in jail are just hard to watch, showing how real it could be. BEST MOMENT- The dinner scene with Derek and Murray. It shows how convicted Derek was, and sets up what had to happen to him in jail for him to change.

7. MEMENTO- I just saw this over the summer, and it is one of the most uniquely shot and scripted movies I have ever seen. Nothing is really like it. Guy Pierce is just flat out nails the role. The movie starts at the end, and it pieces everything together bit by bit. I really dont want to talk too much about it in case people havent seen it, but if you havent, you MUST see it. BEST MOMENT- The end, I won’t spoil it, but I can bet you will think about it for a while.

6. JURASSIC PARK- Favorite movie as a kid. Revolutionized CGI and special effects. Honestly, who hasn’t thought what if there was a real Jurassic Park. The acting isn’t the best, but the action is good and it’s just a flat out fun movie to watch. Plus it has the best musical score of all time. BEST MOMENT- When the T-Rex attacks for the first time, then eats the guy off the toilet.

Part 2 will be posted later in the week

We’re so hung up on this notion that we have some obligation to help the struggling black man, you know. Cut him some slack until he can overcome these historical injustices. It’s crap. I mean, Christ, Lincoln freed the slaves, like, what? 130 years ago. How long does it take to get your act together?

– Derek Vinyard

It has been years since I have seen Edward Norton’s Oscar nominated role in American History X. I owned this movie on videocassette and played it to death before I had to sell it. It is nice to revisit a movie that has a powerful message to say. It is currently #38 of Top 250 of All Time on IMDb. It still resonates with me.

All of the action takes place in a 24-hour period, starting with an incident with Derek’s younger brother, Danny (Edward Furlong) turning in a paper on the book, “Mein Kampf.” This action gets him in hot water with his principal, Bob Sweeney (Avery Brooks). Sweeney decides to be his history teacher and have Danny write a new paper about his brother getting out of prison that is due the next day.

Norton plays Derek, a former Skinhead that is let out of prison after three years for voluntary manslaughter. When he gets out, he wants to usher Danny of the sect that put him in Chino with the hate, brainwashing from the leader of the group, Cameron (Stacy Keach). Some of the other lost youth like Derek’s friend, Seth (Ethan Suplee) and girlfriend (Fairuza Balk) are too far gone to be helped.

Derek’s journey from being second lieutenant in Cameron’s army to having a semblance of a normal life in told in black and white flashbacks. This is director Tony Kaye’s way of expressing Derek’s viewpoint at that time was only in black and white. The life that he wants to have with family, including his mother, Doris (Beverly D’Angelo), sister Davina (Jennifer Lien) is in focus.

The movie is preachy with its message about hate and choosing to not associate with that. This is a good movie will leave an indelible impression on you when you view it.

Judgment: If you want to have some concept of how to stop hate, watch this film.

Rating: ****1/2

I just have a lot of random miscellany to update on, so here you go, in no particular order: Some No

I just have a lot of random miscellany to update on, so here you go, in no particular order:

Some Norwegians came to visit. Meg, I really appreciate the effort you put into keeping in touch with me. I can’t count the number of friends that I’ve regrettably lost contact with since college. And giving me bacon / cheese popcorn doesn’t hurt either (although it wasn’t all that bacony, mostly just tasted like cheese popcorn).

Evie finally learned how to jump on Friday. She’s a little behind schedule on that one, so I was working on it with her. I’d like to think that my excellent advice to “put your feet together, bend your knees, and push with your toes” are what put her over the top. She’s going through a bit of a trying phase at the moment, so, after our initial giggling and hugging fit, the fact that we wanted her to jump again pretty much guaranteed she wouldn’t. She did jump some more on Sunday though.

Everyone was sick, back to back. It took each of us about 4 days to shake it, so we had a rough patch for about 12 days.

American History X, good movie! Really good! Has anyone seen it? Oh yeah, Sara and I were the last people on earth who hadn’t.

We finally checked out the Harry Potter exhibit at the MSI. It was pretty cool, and well done, but not exactly what I expected. It’s pretty much a tour through a bunch of movie props. Since it was in the museum of SCIENCE and INDUSTRY, I kind of thought it would be like explaining about the special effects, or like “real life invisibility” exhibits or something. Not just, “Here’s the clothes Ron wore in this scene…” Also, our scheduled time was before the museum opened, which was pretty confusing to begin with, but they had a lot of trouble getting people lined up for the right times and stuff. You’d think for the money they’re pulling down, they could have invested in a couple of signs or something. Still, it was fun. I can’t say if it was worth the price of admission or not, since it was free for us.

Football is officially underway, and what better way to start the season than to beat the Bears? And the best part? I get the double win in the morning when I get to ride to work and listen to Chicago sports talk radio rehash the game!

We had fun at the 57th Street Children’s Book Festival over the weekend. Every year that we go, Evie enjoys it a little bit more as she gets old enough to appreciate the events. We listened to a story teller, made a crown, dug for pirate treasure, attended a music class, watched a dance troupe, painted and glued a paper box, and danced to some music (including jumping on some bubble wrap). Side note, Sara said, “Jeeze, there sure are a lot of pirate themed things here.” When will people realize, it is not me who is obsessed with pirates, but rather all rational human beings who are obsessed with pirates when confronted with their awesomeness.

Finally, the other day I opened the back door to discover an enormous spider web over the opening, trapping us inside. Right in the middle of the web, directly at eye level, sat Lillith the spider queen, bigger’n a quarter. I quickly slammed the door shut before she could spray venom in my eyes. Now I ask you, what could that mean with the web directly across the door opening like that, other than this enormous spider was trying to catch humans? Finally I took it out with a broom, shrieking and cursing the whole time. The spider sat for a while on the porch, memorizing my face before slowly sauntering under a potted plant. I could have squished her with the broom (at least so I told myself…that was a big spider) but do I really need the wrath of all the spiders in the world for killing their queen? No sir, I do not. So I let her go and the next day she had spun her human trap over Evie’s chair on the porch. That’s right, I put a little fear into her and she decided to try for smaller prey. Me 1, spider queen 0.

‘So I guess this is where I tell you what I learned – my conclusion, right? Well, my conclusion is: Hate is baggage. Life’s too short to be pissed off all the time. It’s just not worth it. Derek says it’s always good to end a paper with a quote. He says someone else has already said it best. So if you can’t top it, steal from them and go out strong. So I picked a guy I thought you’d like. ‘We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.’

Edward Harrison Norton (born August 18, 1969) is an American film actor, screenwriter and director. In 1996, his supporting role in the courtroom drama Primal Fear garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. A year later, his lead role as a reformed white power skinhead in American History X earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. His other films include period dramas such as Kingdom of Heaven (2005), The Illusionist (2006), and The Painted Veil (2006); and other notable films such as Rounders (1998), Fight Club (1999), 25th Hour (2002), Red Dragon (2002), and The Incredible Hulk (2008).

Aside from acting, Norton made his directorial debut with the film Keeping the Faith (2000) and is slated to direct the film adaptation of the novel Motherless Brooklyn, set to be released in 2010. He is a member of the board of trustees of Enterprise Community Partners, a non-profit organization for developing affordable housing, as well as a social activist.

Trade Mark

Known to play characters who have dual personalities.

Often plays intelligent but troubled characters

Trivia

Following graduation, he worked in Osaka, Japan, consulting for his grandfather’s company, Enterprise Foundation, which works to create decent, affordable housing for low-income families.

On his return to New York, it took less than two years of waiting tables before the young thespian to capture the eye of Edward Albee, one of the most celebrated playwrights of the 20th century. Albee was working with the Signature Theater Company on a new production of Fragments. One audition and Norton landed the role, as well as a slot in Signature’s repertory company. He currently serves on its board of directors.

He played guitar with Courtney Love’s band Hole in two gigs in Los Angeles, in December 1998.

In July 1998, after a New Yorker jibe in a review of a documentary about Courtney Love, Norton sent the magazine a frameable letter. Norton’s missive was in response to Endless Love, a piece by Daphne Merkin centering on Nick Broomfield’s controversial documentary Kurt & Courtney (1998). The film, filled with speculation that Love’s husband Kurt Cobain death was murder rather than suicide, features a litany of Love-haters anxious to air their grievances. The magazine’s coverage of Broomfield’s film “along with Merkin’s thoughtful contributions” didn’t sit well with Norton.

When Norton met with the director for Primal Fear (1996), he told them that he, like Aaron, came from eastern Kentucky. Norton even spoke with the twang (which he prepared by watching Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980)).

His character Aaron Stampler in Primal Fear (1996), which was based on a book, did not have a stutter, but when he auditioned he gave him one.

Was one of the few celebrities invited to Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s Malibu wedding. [June 29, 2000]

During filming, he and Fight Club (1999) co-star Brad Pitt took soap-making classes.

Norton and Brad Pitt

He and Rounders (1998) co-star Matt Damon competed in the World Series of Poker at Las Vegas on May 1998 with the movie studio Miramax paying the $10,000 per person entrance fee.

His character, Worm, in Rounders (1998) was originally supposed to smoke but being avid non-smoker, he refused and the part rewritten as a non-smoker.

He worked as a waiter, a proofreader, and a director’s assistant to try to get his foot in the door in New York City. He applied to be a New York City cab driver, but he was rejected for the license because he didn’t meet the age requirement.

Speaks some Japanese, which helped when he worked, briefly, for his grandfather’s company, The Enterprise Foundation. He was assigned to the Osaka, Japan branch until he quit the desk job grind at his grandfather’s suggestion and decided to try to break into acting in New York.

Wilde Lake High School in Columbia, Maryland, where Edward graduated in 1987, built a new auditorium for the performing arts several years ago. He revisited his alma mater and gave a lecture on the day of the dedication. It is named after Edward’s grandfather, James Rouse.

Received a B.A. in history from Yale in 1991, but took many theater and Japanese courses as an undergraduate. He has said in interviews that he took as many theater courses as he could without majoring in theater.

The theme song for Keeping the Faith (2000) – “Heart of Mine” by Peter Salett – was not written specifically for the film. Salett is a good friend of Edward’s.

According to Yale’s newspaper, he has wanted to play the poet Dylan Thomas for a long time, but feels he’s not physically right for the part.

While a precocious 8-year-old actor, he asked a surprised director of a play, “What is my objective here?” The director was startled by his interest in acting.

His babysitter, Betsy True, went on to perform as Cossette in a Broadway version of Les Miserables. She was the one who originally piqued Edward’s interest in acting, taking him to see his first play, If I Were A Princess, at age six.

Auditioned for the role of ‘Rudy Baylor’ in the movie The Rainmaker (1997). The role eventually went to Matt Damon.

Got the role for Fight Club (1999) because director David Fincher enjoyed his performance in The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), which was the only film of the actor’s that he had seen.

Dedicated his directoral debut, Keeping the Faith (2000), to his late mother, Robin.

Brother of Molly Norton and James Norton.

Turned down the role of Private Ryan in Saving Private Ryan (1998).

Oldest of three children.

Was considered for the role of Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon (1999). Director Milos Forman could not decide between him and Jim Carrey and left the decision up to the studio. The studio decided to go with Carrey.

His grandfather, James Rouse, is credited with being the inventor of the modern shopping mall.

Lost several pounds for Fight Club (1999).

Holds benefit screenings of his films mostly at The Senator Theatre in Baltimore, MD to benefit some charities that includes the Living Classroooms Foundation and the St. Frances Academy Robin Norton Scholarship Fund in honor of his late mother.

Producers of American Psycho (2000) wanted him to play Patrick Bateman.

Played The Captain in a VH1 Captain & Tenille Behind the Music skit on “Saturday Night Live” (1975) with Drew Barrymore. The show aired the night before the 1999 Oscars where he was a nominee for American History X (1998). Barrymore accompanied Edward to the Oscars.

Has a tabby cat named Maggie, named after the character from Cat in a Hot Tin Roof.

Dated Salma Hayek. [1999-2003]

His grandfather, James Rouse, designed the planned community Norton was born in – Columbia, Maryland.

Did NOT attend the famed Yale Drama School, as reported in many news paper articles. He attended Yale merely as an undergraduate.

His father, Edward Norton Sr. was an attorney for president Jimmy Carter.

As a response to the events of September 11th and the increasing conflict in the Middle East, he contributed to establish the Middle East Peacemakers Fund at Yale University.

Norton already had two Oscar nominations before he was 30.

College buddies with Ron Livingston at Yale.

Was attached at one point to star in Hart’s War (2002) but walked away from the project and an $8 million salary. The role later went to Colin Farrell.

Voted International Man of the Year (2003) By British GQ Magazine.

Shares a birthday with Patrick Swayze, Denis Leary, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Robert Redford and Christian Slater.

He served as Artistic Director for the Signature Theatre Company in New York from 2001-2003. He is currently still on the board.

American History-X

Shaved his head and gained 30 pounds of muscle in 3 months by drinking protein shakes, meat shakes (blended roast beef), and lifting weights non-stop for his role as Dereck Vinyard in American History X (1998).

Was born in Boston, Massachusetts and was raised in Columbia, Maryland.

Was 33 years old when he played Will Graham in Red Dragon (2002). His predecessor, William Petersen, was also 33 years old when he played the same role in Manhunter (1986).

He speaks Spanish.

He treasures his private life and being able to live a normal life – and can’t imagine not being able to take the New York subway if he gets too famous.

Stuart Blumberg, Edward’s friend from his Yale college days, wrote most of what was to become the basis for Keeping the Faith (2000). Edward starred, produced, and directed the romantic comedy, but he also assisted Stuart in writing the original story.

Won a Village Voice Obie Award for his role in the off-Broadway show Burn This in 2003.

Drew Barrymore accompanied him to the Oscar in 1999 where he was nominated for “Best Actor in a Leading Role”

Did an uncredited rewrite of the script of Frida (2002).

Credits legendary acting coach Terry Schreiber as being a major reason behind his success as an actor. The story was that Norton, who speaks Japanese, worked a deal with Schreiber to trade acting lessons for Norton teaching Schreiber Japanese. Schreiber was to direct a play in Japan at the time, and agreed to the deal. Norton studied with Schreiber for about three years in the early 90s in New York, and his career subsequently took off. Norton wrote the introduction to Schreiber’s 2005 acting text “Acting: Advanced Techniques for the Actor, Director, and Teacher.”

Like fellow film actors Peter Sarsgaard and Jeanine Louise DeName, he studied at New York City’s famous T. Schreiber Studio.

Is an active member of Friends of The High Line, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and reuse of the High Line – a 1.5 mile elevated railway that runs along the West Side of Manhattan. Norton appears in a video made by Good Mag about the conversion of the old rail line into a multi-use trail.

Speaks some French and said he really liked the work of Francois Truffaut, a French director.

Says if he wasn’t an actor he would be a pilot.

He was was going to play Terry Fitzgerald in Spawn (1997) but pulled out of the project.

Auditioned for roles in With Honors (1994), Hackers (1995), and Up Close & Personal (1996) before his film debut in Primal Fear (1996).

He often works out daily, mainly weight-lifting, before he’s on set.

He has played people with several identities in Primal Fear (1996), Fight Club (1999), The Score (2001), The Incredible Hulk (2008) and arguably in American History X (1998) in which his character turns 180° during the course of the story and in Death to Smoochy (2002) in which he portrayed a professional actor and his character Smoochie the Rhino.

Following graduation, Norton worked in Osaka, Japan, consulting for his grandfather’s company, Enterprise Foundation. He also appeared in an ESL textbook, Only in America, used by Nova, a major Japanese language school.

American History X is a film of its own. It has a little bit of everything in the way it touches you

American History X is a film of its own. It has a little bit of everything in the way it touches you. This of course making it a very though provoking film. There isn’t a genre you can place this film in because it is a not a crime story, action or even a simple drama instead it is a humanistic thriller. What it is about, is the battle over and within ourselves.

Who better than to display these wild but common complexities within people than Edward Norton. The range he shows here is astounding in only his fifth movie. Norton plays Derek Vinyard, a skin head that realizes through cruel yet necessary events in his life that he has gone down the wrong path. When he comes out of jail he attempts to stop his brother played Edward Furlong from going down the same road he had done. Through all his efforts though some things just prove to be inevitable. Avery Brooks also gives a great performance as Derek Vinyard’s former teacher and now principal of his former school. His words may not be of the most inspiring but his actions and messages sent across are subtle yet strong and to the point.

Norton’s performance though wasn’t just about range but exploring different dimensions of life. Whether it proved to be psychological, social or even political on a certain level. It is a transforming performance revealing something mind blowing and eye opening. That we, and this includes anyone, can take a devastating turn in life no matter how intelligent we are or thoughtful. That the person that determines the outcome of your life is yourself whether it is good or bad. Norton’s realizations aren’t through teachings such as the ones that got him in jail but they are through the events in the time he spent in jail. He saw the truth for himself realizing then what is false and what is real.

The screenplay written by David McKenna is about as versatile as the performance Norton gives. Not only because of the Derek Vinyard character but because of the characters involved in his life. For example the root of his evil did not come from the murder of his father but rather his father himself. Through just a conversation at breakfast did his negative thoughts get really embedded eventually then leading to them dramatically taking over his mind and way of life. Only when his father got killed did these negative thoughts seem justified. The way this screenplay and direction was able to display this message in just a plethora of other underlying tones was spectacular.

What makes this movie great though is that you can truly find yourself in the messages delivered. As much as the main character might not seem relevant or connected to many people it his emotions and functioning of his mind that all of us are able to connect with. Yet what makes a movie great is not simply the message or messages sent across but how powerfully they are delivered. American History X delivers its multiple and intertwining messages about as powerfully as I’ve seen from a film.

Alright, I’ve tried over and over to put up reviews of both The Ugly Truth and the new Harry Potter. I know both are late, which is why I used the word “tried.” So, I thought in the theme of movies, I’d put up some movie trivia. This won’t be a long blog but, at least it’ll be something. Here goes:

First since I’ve been doing research on the Potter series since mid-July here’s some Harry Potter facts:

1. Alan Rickman was not the first choice to play Severus Snape. It was Tim Roth. (For those who don’t know Tim Roth, he was the Mr. Orange in Reservoir Dogs, the jerk in the cafe in Pulp Fiction, and finally he’s in the new show Lie to Me)

2. When Roth was unable to join the cast, Rickman was hand picked by J.K. Rowling.

3. Originally when Potter was optioned, Steven Spielberg was going to direct and it was rumored Haley Joel Osment would star. Rowling put the kibosh on that as she wanted an all British cast (thank GOD, by the way. Check out Secondhand Lions and see just how awkward and weird Haley Potter would’ve been).

4. The producers who optioned Potter had not intended on making all books into movies or even making them into a live action movie. They were going to make an animated feature and also looking to mesh together the books. Rowling also vetoed this (the first author worth a billion dollars is nobody’s fool).

5. Rowling approved all the final scripts (then again, maybe she is).

6. The Order of the Phoenix is the only movie not written by Steve Kloves. It’s writer, Michael Goldenberg, actually offered to write the entire series but his draft of Sorcerer’s Stone was rejected in favor of Kloves’. The producers stuck with Kloves from then on. (He choose not to do Order of the Phoenix. Yet came back for Half Blood Prince. I guess he only wanted a gold plated back scratcher.)

7. During the underwater scenes for Goblet of Fire, Daniel Radcliffe got two ear infections. (I think in the wizard world that’s called Bloodius Q-tippy)

8. After the Chamber of Secrets, the character Dobby was cut from all other films due to “time constraints” (yeah, right. More like irritation constraints. That guy was a sawed off Jar Jar Binks).

9. Director Guillermo Del Toro was offered to direct a couple films in this series however, he opted out to do the Hellboy films (this guy LOVES Hellboy. Here’s a small list of movies he turned down to do both Hellboys: I am Legend, Blade: Trinity, Alien Vs. Predator, and One Missed Call. Okay so, maybe Hellboy was the smarter move….).

10. For Half Blood Prince, the studio wanted to give Dumbledore a girlfriend (cause there’s not enough bloody romance in that movie more on that later) however, Rowling said that was impossible as Dumbledore is gay. She would make this public knowledge when the 7th book came out.

That’s enough Harry Potter, onto turned down movie roles and who was cast instead:

1. David Schwimmer was originally cast to play Agent J in Men in Black. He decided to do Breast Men instead. (See? Retarded movie choices aren’t just limited to Ben Affleck)

2. Will Smith turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix. He chose to do Wild Wild West instead. (There’s really no need to insult him, he did Wild Wild West.)

3. Nick Cage also turned down the role of Neo, proving there is a God. God’s existence would later be thrown into question when Cage was allowed to remake The Wicker Man.

4. Chris Farley was originally cast as Shrek. His untimely passing opened the door for Mike Meyers. Side Note: After recording all his lines, Meyers thought Shrek would be better served with a Scottish accent. So, they rerecorded all the lines in a Scottish accent (no, I’m not making that up).

5. There was some debate over who would play Marla Singer in Fight Club. The studio wanted Reese Witherspoon while director David Fincher fought for Helena Bonham Carter. Fincher won out but, only because Witherspoon turned down the role because it was “too dark.” Instead she did Cruel Intentions. You know, the movie where Sarah Michelle Gellar sniffs coke out of a cross and makes a bet with her step brother where if he wins they’ll have sex in whatever way he wants (that’s got G rating written all over it).

Let’s close this out with some weight gain movie trivia:

1. In The Machinist Christian Bale had to get dangerously thin. He decided to start running insane amounts to lose all the weight. He got so thin however, he actually had to start walking as he didn’t have the strength to run in a straight line (or yell at crew members getting in his shot).

2. In Castaway Tom Hanks lost then regained 30 lbs in the course of filming. This took such a toll on his body, doctors told him if he ever does a drastic change like that again, it will probably kill him (I doubt this as he survived You’ve Got Mail).

3. For American History X Edward Norton put on 30 lbs of muscle (and it still didn’t save him from that terrible shower scene…).

4. In X-men Origins: Wolverine Liev Schreiber was told to put on a muscle suit so he wouldn’t look small compared to Hugh Jackman. In order to avoid having to wear the suit, Schreiber put on 35 lbs of muscle with Jackmans help (maybe Jackman can help him pick out a better name. Liev Schreiber looks like a junior jumble puzzle.)

5. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had to drop over 60 lbs when he transitioned from professional wrestling to full time acting (he would soon become the Scorpion King of retard movie choices).

So, there you have it. A few movie facts you may or may not have known. I hope to put something up soon that doesn’t have numbering after a sentence or two. Keep your fingers crossed.
