I was happy to participate in two very different Thanksgivings this year. I had originally thought that I would be celebrating alone here in Damascus, where I know very few people outside of my office. So, as you can imagine, I was incredibly thankful that I had the opportunity to get out of my apartment and do something new.

The first, on Wednesday night, was with a great group of Fulbright participants in a tiny apartment off Baghdad Street, sharing ad hoc food assemblages with each other, including a massive turkey procured from the Old City, while I doubled the people I knew in Damascus over dinner, shisha, and several rounds of Mafia. It was exciting, and it felt normal – like it could have been picked up and transplanted anywhere in the world. We were all just thankful to be together when we were all grouped in this one place and one time. I learned a lot about their time here so far, where they were heading, and how they ended up in Syria.

On Thursday, I was invited to spend Thanksgiving with the Chargé d’Affaires at the Ambassador’s House. (A side note: while there is no Ambassador assigned to Syria, the Chargé is temporarily appointed, without need for approval from the Senate, to serve until the Ambassador is confirmed, a date that seems not that far off, from what I have heard.) While I began the night nervously, it turned out to be pretty exceptional. It certainly was, more than anything, an opportunity to meet some extraordinary people. I was introduced to the British Ambassador, had a lovely conversation with the director of IRC’s Iraqi resettlement programs with an invitation to go and observe their work in the refugee camps, discussed the possibility of collaborating on a future event with the Danish Ambassador (who remembered me from earlier in the week when I had attended a conference on the impact of climate change on Syria, in preparations for next week’s COP15 in Copenhagen), introduced the Turkish Ambassador and his wife to their first Thanksgiving dinner, and had dessert with a Syrian-American doctor who worked with the Ministry of Health on developing legislation and programming on disabilities and bioethics. Like I said, it was quite an evening.

It was an interesting comparison between the two evenings, but in reality – they weren’t that much different. Both were opportunities to gather groups of people together who might not otherwise have a chance to say how grateful they were for the opportunity to share food and conversation with someone else. Whereas I was just reminded how grateful I am for all of the opportunities that have seemingly landed in my lap.

A cynical New Yorker might call this 17 Pygmies’ Pete’s Candy Store album (after the little Brooklyn bar that’s spawned a million quiet oldtime and roots bands since the mid-90s). 17 Pygmies date from the 80s, so they get cred for being both new wave and indie when actually what they’ve evolved into is a majestic art-rock band. And the grass isn’t growing under their feet. Hot on the heels of their lush, richly atmospheric, utterly macabre Celestina from last year (Lucid Culture ranked it one of the three best albums of 2008) comes this similarly quiet, spooky, mostly acoustic suite with even more of a minimalist feel. Built around simple, elliptically ominous lyrical riffs along with a main theme and variations, it’s sort of an acoustic Celestina. But by contrast with that album’s vengeful angst, this is a meditation on separation, longing and death.

It begins on a defiant note with Ain’t Gonna Work, a slow, swaying, pre-Civil war waltz with lush layers of acoustic guitar from founding member Jackson Del Rey along with bandmates Jeff Brenneman and Meg Maryatt (who also contributes accordion, mandolin, banjo and vocals). The waltz theme continues, hypnotically as a sense of dread quietly grows: by the fourth track, where the electric guitar finally tremolos its way in, it’s clear that this romance is doomed. A minor key is introduced, stately with slide guitar and mandolin trading sweet/harsh textures. Let It Rain the Blues, a gentle duet juxtaposes Del Rey’s resignation with Maryatt’s fetching, consoling tone – there’s a little Lisa Lost (of the late, great NYC noir rockers DollHouse) in the unaffected warmth of her phrasing.

Denouement arrives on the wings of a brisk bluegrass tune, but she’s not ready to give up on the guy, even if this means the next place she sees him is heaven. We never get to see if this actually happens or not, through a slow, elegiac return to the initial waltz theme, a banjo tune that sounds as if it’s sung from the point of view of the girl’s mother and then a swaying Mexican border ballad with some juicy Spanish guitar and mandolin phrasing. As you can imagine, this story doesn’t end well. Who would have thought that 17 Pygmies would have had a great Americana album in them? It’s just out on Trakwerx.

Prefeito Diego e Skaff durante assinatura do convênio

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I know I have much to be thankful for on this, the most American (and therefore bipartisan) of holidays. I won’t bemoan my meager existence in the cosmos by going line by line over everything that I have to be extremely grateful for, but suffice it to say that this past year, from my maternal grandfather’s death last Thanksgiving to my sudden unemployment to my personal struggles on the campaign trail to finally my recent (and continuing) recovery over some of my personal demons has left me a changed person and very grateful to be able to rediscover at a young age just what I posess as individual that I must thank god every day for.

Today I wanted to take a moment to thank Adult Swim for their week-long retrospective of the King of the Hill’s past Thanksgiving shows. Many of you who know me personally know that I am a big fan of the show and of Adult Swim. I was quite happy when Adult Swim picked up the show, despite the fact that its straight ahead satire isn’t a perfect match for the more absurdist comedies the network features. For the uninitated, King of the Hill focuses on the daily life and travails of the Hill family in the fictitious town of Arlen, Texas. Though it is an animated sitcom, it has often been overlooked for its incisive satire (and loving embrace) of small town American life. The program is unique amongst other animated sitcoms (note how I avoid the use of the word cartoon) in that it generally follows the rules of physics and for not being overly reliant on slapstick comedy. However, it still takes great liberty in using its medium to its fullest potential to skewer both the troubling and joyous aspects of our society.

King of the Hill is brilliant in the way that it both embraces and pokes fun at the occasional ignorance of small town Americans of the world writ large while simultaneously skewering both high minded social engineers and profit driven corporations. At its core the show is more populist than conservative, though Hank Hill has many qualities that conservatives should embrace as their own: community spirit, a generous will, and a can-do-it attitude with a genuine love of hard work paying off for those willing to do it.

Another thing that its great at doing is showing the fact that, though many, MANY families in America may not live up to a Rockwellian image, by gum, they’re going to try. That’s why their satire of the holidays has always been so classic. In their Halloween episode they showed Hank going up against a religious zealot determined to suck the childish joy out of that holiday through an outright ban. In their Christmas episodes they’ve touched upon overwrought sentimentality, dealing with a mixed family, overcoming mixed emotions with parents, and the holiday’s pervasive loneliness for those without a family.

The Thanksgiving episodes are no less brilliant. For a holiday that few other shows touch, they produced four episodes, each classic in its own way. After all, what holiday could be more fitting for a show focused on small town America and how we sometimes don’t live up to the image but constantly strive towards it? In their first, “Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men,” they examined Hank’s strained relationship with his WWII hero father he admires but who shows little love back and his hesitance to confront his father’s demeaning treatment towards his long suffering mother (who Cotton claims he “scrapped” for a much young woman). They do this in the context of a focus group for a new mower that’s replacing Hank’s beloved model (which is framed as a brilliant Nine Angry Men parody). The mower turns out to be long on features but short of quality. They manage in the same episode to both explore the psychology behind a split family as well as deliver some snark to our enhancement obsessed society as well as some of the pop psychology and pseudo-science upon which focus groups are based. The episode features a bit part from a minister who delivers two classic lines. They speak to me as someone who has struggled with his own faith at times:

Boyce Hubert, minister, though I’ve lost my faith. Though I did find a pretty great parking space on the way in, but the lord works in such mysterious ways that who the hell knows.

I’m not sure if there’s a God, or a heaven, but one thing I can tell you, your daddy’s going to Hell.

In the Season 4 episode “Happy Hank’s Giving,” they again examine the family dynamic, this time with Peggy’s family. Peggy is shown as constantly trying to compete with her demanding mother who seems to love her brother more. Her brother, the father of their live-in niece, is hinted to be incarcerated, a fact proven in later seasons. They also examine Hank’s idefatigable character and honor as showing him as a man tested by the insanity of holidays at the airport, particularly when their flight repeatedly runs into weather issues. In one touching scene, he plays along with Peggy’s game of getting them on the last bus to Love Field, but at the last minute gives up their place to a man and his family who Hank had previously decided not to tell about the bus. The also satirize airline security two years before the events of September 11 by having Hank subjected to watching his beloved turkey destroyed by the airport bomb squad after it sent two of their bomb sniffing dogs over the edge and Hank’s repeated admission that his bags weren’t in his sight “at all times,” despite a security guard who could care less.

Season Five’s “Spin the Choice” again focuses on family, this time in the context of Bobby Hill befriending John Redcorn, the father of Hank’s neighbor’s Dale and Nancy Gribble’s son Joseph. It is in this episode that Joseph finally discovers his true heritage. That in of itself is interesting in acknowledging that these sorts of dramas are not just for big cities. However, the episode goes further by satirizing white guilt through Bobby’s scarily hilarious presentation at Thanksgiving dinner of the heritage of the Native Americans, one that in that part of the country includes cannibalism, while also showing the way in which people react to cultural truths they don’t quite understand. A classic line, when Dale is at the trailer of John Redcorn.

Redcorn: Any cultural anthropologist will tell you that the Anasazi last practiced cannibalism over 700 years ago!

Dale: (frightened) And you are affiliated with *which* tribe?

The final episode dealing with Thanksgiving was Season 7’s “Goodbye Normal Jeans.” The focus once again goes back to the Hill family, as Bobby takes home ec and (for once) actually manages to impress Hank, who is generally taken aback by Bobby’s less-than-masculine (in a Texas sort of way) tendencies. Peggy, frustrated that Bobby has taken over a good deal of domestic work and therefore making her feel devalued. I won’t ruin the ending, as it is airing tonight, but there’s a great bit skewering stereotypes of male hairdressers, a touching scene of reconciliation, and this classic line:

Bobby, I hope I never have to say this again, but get me an apron.

I know its probably strange to read a grown man opine at such length about “cartoons” (again, hate that word), but the show really spoke to me on many levels–not just as a small town American and a conservative but also because of my only family. I see a great deal of my father in Hank Hill, a dedicated seller of “propane and propane accessories,” a dedicated company man despite many episodes of disillusionment. I see some of my grandfather in Cotton Hill–a man for who there is much to admire but whose values didn’t always match with his parenting. Throw in other family issues, and, well, it’s all there. That’s what makes the show such a classic for me.

The show never got the audience it deserved, both with the general viewing public and with television critics. As you can see by my capsules above there’s much to be discussed from a cultural perspective. The show suffered due to often being pre-empted during football season, as it occupied the 7 o’clock time slot on Fox. It was unceremoniously dumped this season, and the final two episodes were shown in September with little promotion. The show may be remembered, however, as a favorite of former Democratic Governor Mike Easley.

But the show’s in the past now, and we’re left with twelve great seasons of satire and loving laughs about small town America. So sit back, relax, enjoy some turkey and football, and remember who we are as Americans, warts and all. And a happy Hanks-giving to you.

On this Thanksgiving Day….

As many of you know, I rarely let one of these major holidays go by without a thought or two. Those thoughts this day are ones of thankfulness. Thankfulness to my God to have let me live in what is still the greatest nation on the face of the Earth. I mentioned last year that I was thankful that God allowed me to be born here rather than Chad, Somalia. In a country where those born in the worst conditions (of a single welfare mother on crack in inner city Baltimore) has a better chance of success than almost anyone born in Ethiopia.

Personally, I have much to be thankful for this day. I am healthy. I am not rich by any means but I’m not poor. I am well fed. I don’t lack for heat or a roof over my head. I have a loving family and good friends.

I am thankful to my God today, thankful that He has allowed me to live in a country born and based on Judean – Christian morals and ethics. A country, conceived in liberty, that holds that a life is a precious thing and not something to squander. A country that (so far) allows me peaceably assemble and denounce those things I find wrong with the way governance is occurring.

I am thankful today for the many young people who have chosen to give up several years of their lives (at the very least) to protect the nation I hold close to my heart. I am particularly thankful for one soldier who is close to me. I am thankful for the protection of Mighty Providence over all our fighting men and women.

Yes today is a day to thank the God you worship for all the good things in your life. I have pity on those who do not believe in a Higher Power today. They are denying themselves the chance to know what it is to be truly thankful.

One of my favorite sitcoms back in the 80s and early 90s was NBC’s Cheers. I liked the ensemble cast and writing and it was a fun show to watch whether it was the ongoing love spats between Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long), Carla Tortelli’s (Rhea Pearlman) acerbic wit and disdain for Diane or those lovable barflys Norm Peterson (George Wendt) and Cliff Claven (John Ratzenberger) debating life’s foibles and troubles.

One of my favorite episodes that I never get tired of watching was the one entitled Thanksgiving Orphans. In this classic episode, Diane is the only one who has made plans for Thanksgiving, as such Carla invites the rest of the Cheers gang to her place. They come over, but get very impatient as the afternoon passes waiting for Norm’s turkey (affectionately called “birdzilla” as the day progresses and their patience begins to wear thin) to cook. When Diane’s plans fall through, she joins them, to Carla’s disgust. And what happens next is a classic moment on television.

My son came home from PreK with a paper pilgrim hat the other day. After admiring his handiwork, my mind went to the obvious place.

Pilgrim names.

Spokane’s Spokesman-Review reminds us that back in 1620, first baby born to the Pilgrims in New England was named Peregrine. Big brother was called Resolved.

There were, of course, plenty of men called John and William and women named Mary and Anne.

The more interesting masculine names worn by Plymouth Rock arrivals included:

Isaac

Bartholomew

Love

Wrestling

Moses

Desire

Degory (though he may have been Gregory. Or Digory – we don’t know much about him.)

Giles (brother to Constance, Damaris and Oceanus)

Oceanus (born en route to Plymouth – see above)

Solomon

Jasper

Myles (Standish, of course)

There were fewer women, but a few stand-out names:

Remember

Humility

Constance (sister to Damaris, Oceanus and Giles)

Damaris (see above)

Priscilla

I’ve read estimates that only around 25% of the Purtians ever had names that would’ve seemed unusual in their day. If that’s true, then 75% answered to ordinary appellations for their time, like James and Elizabeth.

It also seems surprisingly consistent with modern day experience. Around three-quarters of all kids born in the US receive a Top 1000 name. In the nineteenth century, names ranking in the 900s were only given to a few kids; today, names at those same rankings are worn by a few hundred. Really unusual names have never been terribly common – but neither was there a moment where every boy was Robert and every girl was Jane.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel of scandal amongst the Puritans, The Scarlet Letter, introduced a few unusual names not worn by the original settlers, including Hester and Pearl. Most of the other names were unremarkable – Arthur and Roger aren’t popular today, but they don’t make you think of the novel, either.

Even in fiction, not every Puritan was called Flee-Fornication.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Marching bands and gaudy floats are mandatory. And it just wouldn’t be Macy’s without Santa Claus riding into Herald Square. But really, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade is about balloons. Huge balloons.

The 2009 event marks the 85th anniversary of the first Macy’s parade, which went from 145th Street in Harlem down to Macy’s flagship store at 34th Street. These days it’s a bit shorter, starting instead at 77th Street at Central Park West. It was already a hugely popular annual event, but it became even more of an institution following the heartwarming film Miracle on 34th Street, which featured the parade.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the entertainers riding on floats and lip-synching to recorded music. I do enjoy when performers from Broadway musicals do a number at the reviewing stand for the TV audience. Some of the shows featured in the last decade include such huge hits as Mamma Mia!, Hairspray, Wicked, Jersey Boys, and Spamalot.

Uploaded by a820.g.akamaid.net.

But back to the balloons. The first to be introduced was Felix the Cat, in 1927. Some of the other notable balloons, with their year of introduction, include: Mickey Mouse (1934), Popeye (1957), Bullwinkle (1961), Underdog (1965), Superman (1966), Snoopy (1968), Garfield (1984), Big Bird (1988), Bart Simpson (1990), The Cat in the Hat (1994), SpongeBob (2004) and Shrek (2007).

If you ever get to New York for the parade, one of the most interesting sights is the inflating of the massive balloons. It takes place the day before Thanksgiving around the Museum of Natural History between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. You’ll look up and think, “You know, Ronald McDonald could stand to lose a few pounds.”

Here’s a cool look behind the scenes at this wonderful event:

Earlier this month we presented an article that espoused the notion as to whether “political correctness” may have had a direct result on the travesty at Fort Hood. We quite openly believe that if a person is acting out with their ideological beliefs and is conflicted about what he believes as opposed to what he does, sure – there can be a real problem.

However the point of our previous article as well as this one is to illustrate how gaining “protected status” under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment – has reached a point where it simply is not assisting those who need protection in this country. (Please see previous articles by clicking here.)

Sixty-three percent (63%) of U.S. voters say political correctness prevented the military from responding to warning signs from Major Nidal Malik Hasan that could have prevented the Fort Hood shootings from taking place.

A new Rasmussen Reports national survey shows that just 16% disagree and do not believe political correctness kept military authorities from possibly stopping the killing of 13 people and the wounding of many others in the November 5 incident. Twenty-one percent (21%) are not sure.

Older Americans are more suspicious of political correctness than voters under 40. Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major political party overwhelmingly believe political correctness held the military back. That view is shared by 49% of Democrats while 23% of those in the president’s party disagree to think political correctness kept the military from responding to warning signs from Hasan.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of Mainstream Americans think political correctness prevented the military from responding before the attacks took place.

New reports say authorities were aware of suspicious behavior and comments by Hasan, a devout Muslim, but no action was taken against him, in part because of concern that there might be an appearance of anti-Islamic bias. Both President Obama and the Army chief of staff urged Americans not to jump to conclusions about the cause of the shootings just after they took place.

Seventy-three percent (73%) of Texas voters say Hasan should receive the death penalty if he is convicted of the massacre at Fort Hood. Military prosecutors have charged Hasan with 13 counts of premeditated murder. If convicted, he is eligible for the death penalty. Quick question: Why do you suppose that voters over the age of 40 are more suspicious of political correctness?
