Ami Suzuki, who’s last single Reincarnation was produced by Taku Takahashi, a departure from her long-running production by Yasutaka Nakata, is coming out with a new single. I feel like she’s doing the Join Project again, and I really like the feelings. The upbeat dance single, which is produced by Fantastic Platic Machine, is coming out a good 7 and a half months after Reincarnation. The single itself also has two b-sides: an English and Japanese version of Kiss Kiss Kiss. The currently untitled single is dropping on October 7th, so look out for it.

Ami Suzuki Well, there are a lot of rumors floating about that Ami Suzuki has gotten together with Y

Ami Suzuki

Well, there are a lot of rumors floating about that Ami Suzuki has gotten together with Yamashita Tomohisa, more commonly known as Yamapi. Ami Suzuki has been pretty under-the-radar since she sued her record label back in 2000. For that matter, she didn’t even get signed onto a new record label until 2004 when Avex President Max Matsuura picked her up. Yamapi is the total opposite: He’s a member of boy band News and stars in many popular doramas, making him extraordinarily famous. The rumor goes something like this …

Yamapi

Ami was attending a party for clothing line “R” at restaurant “L”. According the the staff at “L”, Ami was invited while Yamapi was not, but Ami brought Yamapi as her personal guest. The two had to be put in a special VIP area because of all the attention they were getting. They were reportedly very close, ordering together and drinking from the same glass.

The rumors have been denied by Avex, though, saying that was the first time that they even met. But let’s be honest here, they’re contradicting the “L” staff and all of the witnesses. Above that, it wouldn’t be the first time Avex has lied about relationship status.

What do you think?

Yasutaka Nakata There are many prominent electronic music producers in Japan, but the most prominent

Yasutaka Nakata

There are many prominent electronic music producers in Japan, but the most prominent of these are often compared and contrasted: Yasutaka Nakata, who has produced songs like “Game” and “Edge” for Perfume, and Taku Takahashi (known for being a member of hip-hop duo m-flo) who has produced “Reincarnation” for Ami Suzuki and “Sweet Rishi Boy” for Anna Tsuchiya. So, who is really better?

While Yasutaka has a certain advantage over Taku Takahashi, particularly producing super stars like Meg, Perfume, Capsule and Ami Suzuki, it seems like he’s losing a lot of these advantages, for a reason too, one would imagine. Meg, for a brief period, stopped being produced by Nakata and went over to Hadouken!. Suddenly, she had an identity. Her songs had personality, they weren’t bland anymore. “Freak” and “Toxic” are, in my opinion, Meg’s best works. She went back to Nakata, but soon left again and is now working with Shanghai Restoration Project. Ami Suzuki’s most recent single, “Reincarnation”, was produced by the rival, Taku Takahashi, as opposed to Nakata who had produced her entire album prior to this single “Supreme Show”, which had very few standout tracks. Nakata’s style has gotten exceptionally bland, and it’s showing by his dwindling workload.

Taku Takahashi

Taku has recently produced the song “Sweet Rishi Boy” for Anna Tsuchiya–arguably the most refreshing electro dance song of the year. With it’s middle eastern influences and and catchy chorus, this song is a contender for my favorite J-electrodance song of the year. Taku’s style often includes strings in some ways, and also includes less vocoder than Nakata. It is so refreshing and sleek, it’s hard to resist a song that’s produced by him.

Nakata’s time to shine was certainly late 2007 to early 2008, when he produced some of the most fun, catchy songs in the industry, such as “Free Free” for Ami Suzuki and “Baby Cruising Love” for Perfume. After that, though, his work started to show surprisingly fast degeneration in quality. Taku’s only downfall is that he doesn’t produce songs very often as he is currently very busy remixing and producing for House Nation and Ravex. That is to say, he has participated in the production of other amazing electro dance songs as “Rock U featuring Namie Amuro” and “1 More Night featuring Monkey Majik” for Ravex.

The Verdict: Yasutaka Nakata occasionally comes up with the ultra-cool dance tune, although mixed in with tons of mediocre ones, while Taku Takahashi always throws out an amazing production, but it’s very rarely that he even tries.

A full 8 months late. I can’t bear to see this on the front page. Hit the jump if you dare.

The long lost November 2008 edition of “This Month In J-Rock”! I wrote most of these reviews months ago so bear with me. I’ve been busy with school and I graduated in May, jobless. I still intend to do the months I missed this year (January, February, March) but probably in a different format, after I complete my Best of 2008 of course.

THE SINGLES

Acidman- I Stand Free

Acidman is content to be the next “chill” band. “I Stand Free” is a harmless tune backed by acoustic guitar. The chorus raises it’s tempo but slows down once again during the verses. The b-side “O (second line)” is much better. Again, the song is mostly acoustic guitar but has nice coffee house bongos in background. This isn’t the kind of music I expect to blow up in Japan but makes for good magazine reading time. (1/2*)

HALCALI- Long Kiss Goodbye

I’m pretty sure HALCALI played this song when I saw them live in Chicago. Or at least an earlier version. “Long Kiss Goodbye” is the latest ending theme from Naruto Shippuden. It’s a ballad with the usual HALCALI rhymes. Similiar to “Tip Taps Tip” from Eureka Seven but not as good. It’s accompanied by an instrumental version and a really cool song named “Flash.” It has more of a dance vibe than we’re used to from the girls. (1/2*)

http://www.myspace.com/halcali

THE MINI-ALBUMS

hare-brained unity- Recent Disco System

Dance rock seems to be the new trend in the J-indie scene. Last month we had Art-School’s Illmatic Baby and this month, hare-brain’s Recent Disco System. The mini-album starts with a “prologue” that perfectly segues into the first track “ALIVE.” The rest of these tracks are just OK. I would’ve liked to hear less singing and more electronic beeps and vocador experimentation. “EVIL DANCE” gets it right, a disco rock instrumental, but the last two tracks are too long for their own good. Hare-brained are getting close to what they‘re looking for but it still needs some work. (½*)

http://www.myspace.com/harebrainedunity

Oceanlane- Look Inside the Mirror

Oceanlane brings us a new mini-album with three totally different songs. “So Alone” starts off this collection, fast paced and furious–“I’m so alone when I’m with you!” The title track, “Look Inside the Mirror,” has expected introspective lyrics. It’s a slow pop tune, complete with do-do-do’s. “Lights Up My Soul” is their first experimentation in dance rock (remember that new trend I mentioned in the above review?). The lyrics are corny as #@$% but I can’t bring myself to hate it. These are fine songs and I can’t wait for their new album in January. (*)

http://www.myspace.com/oceanlaneofficial

the telephones- Love & Disco

The Telephones are at the forefront of the dance/disco J-indie rock movement, maybe. I have a feeling no one has heard of them. Which is a shame since their songs are very catchy. I’m not overly impressed with the title track, but “RIOT!!” “electric girl,” and “beautiful bitch” are all great songs. The chorus of “Wooo Hoooo,” which I’m sure you can guess, makes it a great feel good song. The final track “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah” asks us to clap our hands and then gives us a bonus track after several minutes of silence. (*)

http://www.myspace.com/thetelephonesjapan

Thursday/Envy- Split (US Release)

It’s wonderful seeing Japanese and American bands play together, releasing albums together. Thursday has been at the forefront of the American hardcore scene for roughly a decade. They have four songs on this split EP, two with lyrics and two instrumentals. To be honest, the two instrumentals, “In Silence” and “Appeared And Was Gone,” sound similar to “Music From Kill the House Lights” off their b-sides album. But it’s nice to see them try something different. Envy’s side starts off with quiet electronic tinkering in “An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction” but then explodes in screaming around the four minute mark. Their other songs, “Isolation of a Light Source” and “Pure Birth and Loneliness,” are rather fast paced compared to the last couple of albums in their discography. It’s funny, Envy has essentially become a post-rock band but Thursday is the only band on this split who has instrumental tracks on it. I was a fan of both bands before hearing this and they both exceeded my expectations. (*)

http://www.myspace.com/thursday

http://www.myspace.com/officialenvy

THE ALBUMS

Ami Suzuki- Supreme Show

This is Ami’s second album release of 2008. It includes both singles “can’t stop the DISCO” and “ONE,” as well as both their b-sides “A token of love,” “climb up to the top,” and “SUPER MUSIC MAKER (SA’08S A MIX).” This leaves for only five new songs, but with capsule front man Yasutaka Nakata producing every track on this album, you know it’s going to be gold. My favorite tracks on this album are still the single b-sides “climb up to the top” and “A token of love.” The new songs are pretty good, though, especially “TEN” and “change my life.” This is the first Ami Suzuki album that a thoroughly enjoyed the whole way through. I’m not a fan of her “idol” work. (*)

Asian Kung-Fu Generation- Surf Bungaku Kamakura

This one’s pretty bad. I remember commenting earlier that the single, “Fujisawa Loser,” wasn’t that great. Unfortunately, “Fujisawa Loser” is the only good track on this album. Their last album, World World World came out earlier in 2008 and was one of their best in my opinion. Surf Bungaka just completely destroyed my image of AKFG. Let’s just forget this ever happened. (-)

avengers in sci-fi- SCIENCE ROCK

The highly anticipated sophomore album from seminal dance rockers avengers in sci-fi. The album is full of fast, electronic noises from the very beginning. “Homosapiens Experience (Save Our Rock Episode 1)” is an onslaught of cyber punk goodness that’s just fun to scream out at the top of your lungs. The next song is “Save Our Rock” (episode 2?) which tones the repetitive lyrics down but is still a good continuation of the theme. The rest of the album continues the pattern with fast songs followed by slightly slower songs but all with a great beat. SCIENCE ROCK does not disappoint and I really hope the avengers get the recognition they deserve. (*)

BACK-ON- YES!!!

I waited 4 years for this? I guess BACK-ON was too busy visiting anime conventions to record actual new material for this album. YES!!! contains all their singles, including the anime-related “Chain,” “flower,” and “Blaze Line.” I’m personally more a fan of their New World material and whatever song Teeda raps on. My favorite songs are still “Butterfly” and “Drive.” “Chain” is still great but these “LA mixes” sound no different than the originals. As a bonus, two BACK-ON remixes are provided by BAReeeeeeeeeeN, a collaboration between the boys and GReeeeN (10 e’s for 10 members, apparently). Aside from having no new material, the singles don’t really flow together. They’re known for having crazy rock/rap songs but then they have super chill R&B tracks like “flower” and “Sonomamade.” It’s clear BACK-ON still doesn’t know what direction they’re headed for. (-)

Dir en grey- Uroboros (US Release)

I was prepared for the worst after hearing “Glass Skin” and “Dozing Green.” But then “Sa Bir” faded into “Vinushka” and I was entranced. Clocking in at over 9 minutes, “Vinushka” is simply epic and one of their best songs. “Reiketsu Nariseba” is another favorite of mine. Uroboros has a general haunting theme with slightly different instrumentation than what they normally use. The screaming is toned down from their last album, but what’s left has a lot more emotional depth. For example, the breakdown half way through “Stuck Man.” The English language versions of “Glass Skin” and “Dozing Green” are laughable, but at least they included the semi-better Japanese versions on the limited edition. There’s definitely some radio rock songs on here but they seem to be moving towards more refined chaos. (*)

dustbox- Blooming Harvest

Comparisons to Ellegarden are unavoidable. They both sound like blink 182. Now that Ellegarden is on “indefinite hiatus” a lot of J-punk bands have tried to step up to fill the void. Dustbox deserves to take the spot. They first caught my attention with their video for “Tomorrow” from Seeds of Rainbows. Although the video for “Spacewalk” on this album isn’t as hilarious, it definitely grows on you. Whoever directs their videos deserves an award. Blooming Harvest is their 5th album. The album is pretty much punk straight through, except for the short and sweet lullaby “Sleepless Night.” Although their songs are cliche and tend to blend together, they have an undeniable cheery message. I can’t help but feel happier after I listened to them. “Why not go somewhere? Life is short. So you gotta smile more and enjoy our own lives.” (*)

Reach Up To The Universe- You & ME

In 2007, Reach Up To The Universe’s Yankee vocalist mysteriously left the band. Hirokazu Notomi stepped up to fill the role as frontman on this their first full-length album. I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to their earlier work, but the new vocalist unfortunately lays on the Engrish. RUTTH is similar in style to winnie or Yellowcard, pop-rock with punk tendencies. Their main selling point is the addition of cello, occasional boy/girl lyrics, and some electronic elements. You & Me is a competent debut album. Songs such as “Faster Mistake,” “S.T.A.R.S,” “Save Me,” “Hand In Hand,” and “Sweet” highlight what the band is capable of. The cello gives the band a distinctive layer that’s the real drawing point for this band to me. I hope to see great things for this band in the future. (1/2*)

Spangle call Lilli line- Purple

This is Spangle call Lilli line’s second album of 2008 (third band to do it this month!). Just months after the release of ISOLATION, the songs here don’t sound that different, “rio” even sounds like “room in octave” part 2. Regardless, there’s some amazing tunes here, the instrumental “nm” and the single “cast a spell on her” come to mind. This band has the amazing ability to depress you then cheer you up in the next song. The vocals are soft and inspirational at the same time. SCLL is one of my best finds this year. (*)

StartOfTheDay- Melody Runner

I tend to think of StartOfTheDay as the type of band Paramore would be if Hayley went mental. Their singer, Atsuko , who is also female, has some of the worst Engrish vocals I’ve heard. But amidst the frantic synthesizers, it somehow works. The formula works well on songs like “Space Eats the Earth” and “Melody Runner,” but horribly on the ballads “Truth Is So Frail,” and “My Book.” My favorite tracks on this album are actually the ones where the male members step up for vocals, the screaming on “A New Story” is so very intense. But the real winner on this album is “Add.” Atsuko steps back and lets one of the guys (?) take full vocals. It’s very soothing, especially with Atsuko’s humming in the background. (1/2 *)

capsule- More! More! More!

Yo I’m the hottest guy around. It’s been 11 months since FLASH BACK, the longest wait between capsule albums ever, and I’m excited. Capsule lays on the electro quick on this album. After the intro, we get a slightly different version of the iTunes single and title track “More, More, More, a thoroughly catchy song. There’s not a bad song on this album. “Jumper,” aside from having one of the coolest videos ever, is the first 7 minute dance song I’ve ever been addicted to. I even love the rap infused “The Time Is Now.” Other highlights: “e.d.i.t.” and “Phantom.” This isn’t the shibuya-kei capsule that debuted in 2000, but a very competent techno group that should be rivaling Daft Punk and Justice on the world album charts.

Dub-I-Dub
Reincarnation (Extended Version)

Ami Suzuki’s 30th single starts off with the a-side Reincarnation. Um… what was this? I remember watching the video to this and thinking I was high, because it didn’t make any sense and I didn’t like the song either. I normally like the song once I hear it on the single, but not in this case, its just strangely boring. The arrangement makes me feel like I’m trapped in some sort of time-warp during the verses and then it gets trippy during the chorus. I guess this is suppose to be techno, its pretty mild compared to her previous singles and sounds more like a dance beat. Ami’s vocal performance was pretty pass. I don’t like how slow she sings the verses, it just came across as very pointless to me, especially considering how she speeds up during the chorus. I don’t know, this track just does nothing for me and with a title like ‘reincarnation’ I was expecting something better than this. I really wish she’d return to her old style, or try out a new one, because this has gotten beyond old.

The next track on the album is a cover, Dub-I-Dub. Its a cover by some group called Me&My, that I’ve of course never heard of. Anyways, I’ll admit this is an interesting song, but I didn’t like it either. The arrangement is very techo, euro, dance dance. Ami’s vocal performance seemed to mesh with it, so I’m assuming she was under vocoder during this recording, of course. The only part of this song I liked was the ‘dub-i-dub’ parts, otherwise this song just went completely over my head. It played a lot better than the a-side though, I’ll give it that.

The last track on the single is Reincarnation (Extended Version). Ah, because the original just wasn’t long and torturous enough. It could have been worse, I liked this extended version a lot more than Perfume’s ‘edge’.

-GRADE: C
Rating: * star

Ami Suzuki’s 30th single Reincarnation was not as good as the cover art suggested it would be. I don’t like how its just another re-hashed version of all her other techno stuff, the only difference is it leans more towards dance than her previous techno material. Dub-I-Dub actually saved this single from a D, because even though I don’t like that track either, I do like the catchy-ness of the chorus. The extended version is self-explanatory, but surprisingly enough a lot more tolerable than the original, imagine that. I don’t know how much more of this I can take from Ami, she’s beyond boring to me now and has ventured into Kuraki Mai territory, hopefully her next single picks things up a little.

*This is an old review, this is the first of a slew of reviews I did before I decided to go on my hiatus. [April 14th, 2009]

1. Potential Breakup Song

Well, well, well…what do we have here? Ami Suzuki earlier in the avex days did cover some other disney tracks….(lemme tell you, they were a bit embarassing). Anyway, I really question whoever decided to let Ami cover Aly & A.J.’s biggest song because it came out of left field for many people who followed Amigo for a long time (me). Now unlike the sisters pop/rock lovefest, Ami’s is definitly more chill and flowed really well altogether. The sisters were featured in the song as minor backups and it suited with Ami’s more sultry vocals here. The only real problem I had was with her thin vocals when she was singing ~This is the potential breakup song~ area. Still this was way better than the sis’s version for sure.

2. feel the beat

I was expecting something really hardcore from the B-side, but what I got was a borefest, an 8-minute borefest. I mean don’t get me wrong Sugiurumn did make the song very club-heavy, but what he/they? forgot was the lyrical sense of the song. I mean all of the song it’s Ami saying ~i feel the music, i feel the sound, i feel the beat, beat, be-be-beat~. I mean that doesn’t exactly fill the song up right if you ask me. The arrangement doesn’t change much except when it restarts midway…Still, the chorus (if that’s what it is) is the best part because the ahhh-ing in the background was so eerie and cool. The album version is still better.

3. Potential Breakup Song (Sugiurumn Remix)

Wait, wasn’t Sugiurumn making the last track, so why would he want to remix his own track? WTF! Anyways, it’s definitly long also passing 8 minutes…I actually liked this remix because it’s more completed in a sense. I like how it starts up with it’s calm guitar thing. It seems like Ami’s singing has slowed down a bit for the remix which kind of sucks, but whatever, it sounds they made this remix more ethereal, but with added club beats.

*phew* I’m so finished with Ami’s discography!!!! Anyway, Potential Breakup Song was a very surprising cover and very soon I might add. I actually liked the more house version of Ami’s and even though feel the beat gets shortened for the album release it can be good if you don’t mind long songs. The remix was actually pretty awesome and it was the only remix of the era so I can’t say much beyond that xD

1. FREE FREE

Before this, I’ve never heard of Yasutaka Nakata or even anything J-tek actually the closest thing to J-tek was “AROUND THE WORLD” and Nami Tamaki’s music. Now since I was in the air after the “CONNETTA” album to which I was losing faith with Ami, she totally got sexed and won me over the summer of 07 with “FREE FREE”. It’s a meteroic barrage of synth and vocoder from Nakata. Now at that time I also didn’t know what the hell a vocoder is and even how to describe the song at the time, so hearing this blew my mind for sure. Even though it isn’t the first time she’s been under it, I felt her voice just suited this equipment perfectly. The first part came as ~I believe you set me free~ Then Ami’s vocals were oozing, even though the verse was muffled lol, but when she blazed through the bridge I was like SHE”S FUCKIN BACK!!! Amazing J-tek track and Nakata should be really happy with the results of the song.

2. SUPER MUSIC MAKER

The other A-side, SUPER MUSIC MAKER was a lot more complex of a song then “FREE FREE” which in cases like this, it’s pretty cool because the song is full of interesting sounds and rhythms. This time Ami is singing at a normal register and and I hear what she’s saying, sadly the song is a little bit messy within the synths, it’s like overload the song with synths. Is it bad that I consider the remix on “can’t stop the DISCO” than to the original?

3. FREE FREE (extended mix)

So what’s better than FREE FREE? An extended version of said song. Now just like the last track, it starts out with a simple beat before leading in the amazing track that is it. I thought the extension was really awesome and hearing the different spots again was cool. I found it cool that they moved the male backup to the start and the guitar screech was more prominent. It could be too long for some people, but to me, this is a great track long or not.

4. SUPER MUSIC MAKER (radio edit)

So the opposite happens with the final track off the single. I’m not surprised since the ending was just so long and boring. I was happy to see this getting shortened and such. I still find it funny that it sounds like m.o.v.e’s “SYSTEMATIC FANTASY” which came out a little bit earlier than this song. I thought it was a smart idea to have it been included in “DOLCE”

This single basically kickstarted Ami’s career again. Both songs are great J-tek tracks and for this, it’s easily one of my favorite Ami singles of all time. I honestly don’t see anything wrong, maybe the extensions were a bit too drawn out, but this was an amazing single.

Ami Suzuki~Supreme Show~

Supreme Show-10/10

Ten-Starting this marvelous album is the fun addicting song Ten. If you listen close to the lyrics they have a sort of reminiscing feel of what Ami has gone through in her career from her blacklisting to her coming back into a partial spotlight, either way this song possessess everything a dance song should.

Can’t Stop The Disco-An upbeat song, like many of her other collaborations with Yasutaka Nakata, I actually purchased this single because I loved it that much, and although the single mix is a lot longer than that of the pv mix, which I much rather prefer, but that is why this single loses a point.

Climb Up To The Top-A dark, and very sexual sounding song, and Ami isn’t exactly singing this song, she’s more or less yelling into the microphone. Similar in style of repetitiveness to Feel The Beat. Nonetheless it is still a good song, and I enjoy it a lot.

Super Music Maker~SA’08S/A Mix~-This remix loses a lot of its techno feel making it a more poppy mix rather than staying similar to the original. Either way it’s still a good remix to one of my favorite Ami songs.

Mysterious-The 2nd new track to appear on the album. It’s prolly my #3 favorite of the entire album. It has a dark feel music wise, and with Ami’s “mysterious” vocals it makes this song even more enjoyable, I could see myself finishing homework while listening to this song.

Change My Life-A poppy song, something I haven’t heard much of under the productions of Yasutaka Nakata, but it’s a fun dance song as well, you seriously can’t go wrong with this album.

Love Mail-A song similar to the style of Change My Life, as this album keeps progressing it just gets better and better. I love this song, and it was one of my favorite songs.

A Token Of Love-Although the introduction is a tad bit long, I really enjoy it, this was my favorite song from this single. It possessess a dark sound, and with Ami’s somewhat high vocals I’m highly satisfied with the way this song came out.

True-Similar in the style of Ten it’s actually an attractive ensemble for Ami and suits her well, this isn’t one of my absolute favorites, but the album wouldn’t be the same without it.

Flower-The first and ONLY ballad to be displayed on this album, I didn’t think it would be possible to make a ballad with a techno sound, and although her vocals are used under the vocoder it doesn’t bother me a bit, because this song just screams of a gorgeous hit!

One-Described as a sparkly, fun tune from avex, I’d say that they hit the nail on the head, I really enjoy this song everytime I hear it, I don’t listen to it as much as I used to, but when I do I love it even more. This is her 3rd time collaborating with Yasutaka Nakata, as will be her next single Can’t Stop The Disco, and her album Supreme Show being ENTIRELY produced by him.

Overall this album being entirely produced by Yasutaka Nakata makes it one of Ami’s best works to date, considering the fact that he knows how to “showcase” her vocal talents.
