La macchina di Sanremo si mette in movimento. La direzione artistica del Festival ha comunicato le novità e la struttura di questa edizione, che sarà suddivisa come l’anno scorso su cinque serate, condotte da Antonella Clerici e da presenze maschili ancora da definire. La rassegna andrà in onda dal 16 al 20 febbraio e tra le cinque serate ce ne sarà una celebrativa dei 60 anni della storia del Festival. Ecco le novità (a scanso di equivoci, la fonte è l’Ansa).

CATEGORIA ARTISTI – Meno canzoni, si spera più qualità. Basterebbe stare sui livelli dell’anno scorso, sarebbe cosa buona. Le canzoni in gara saranno 14 per altrettanti artisti, compreso come è noto il vincitore dell’edizione in corso di X Factor. Porte aperte ai brani in dialetto e agli autori e compositori stranieri. L’ultimo autore e compositore straniero a Sanremo è stato Morris Albert (Mauricio Alberto Kaiserman) nel 2004, che sfruttò identica norma inserita dall’allora direttore artistico Tony Renis. Parlando di soli  interpreti, di recente abbiamo invece visto vincere Lola Ponce.

In ogni, caso, si tratta di una riapertura agli stranieri, non di una novità assoluta: ricordiamo fra gli altri  Bertin Osborne, Lene Lovich, Richard Sanderson, Plastic Bertrand,  Roberto Carlos, i Middle of The Road, i Mungo Jerry, i Pop Tops, Amii Stewart,  Stevie Wonder, Ben E. King e persino i Les Surfs dal Madagascar

Confermato  il meccanismo a eliminazione con il ripescaggio nella terza serata per gli Artisti, e la serata del venerdì (che sarà anche la finale delle novità) con artisti accompagnati da ospiti per le versioni ‘rivisitate’ dei brani.   Torna anche la serata (la terza) dedicata al riascolto delle 4 canzoni degli Artisti non ammesse nelle serate precedenti, con una novità’: i cantanti provvisoriamente esclusi anticiperanno in questa serata la propria canzone nella versione ‘liberamente rivisitata’ con artisti ospiti.

CATEGORIA “NUOVE GENERAZIONI” – Saranno 8 le canzoni in gara, per altrettanti artisti, due dei quali usciranno da SanremoLab. Grosse novità per gli altri sei. Anzitutto l’età: si vai dai 14 ai 39 anni, questo apre le porte a tantissimi artisti negli anni scorsi esclusi per età. Quest’anno per la prima volta i giovani che fanno musica possono inviare una canzone che dal 3 dicembre sara’ in streaming su www.sanremo.rai.it. La selezione, online e per oltre un mese, portera’ 6 artisti direttamente a confrontarsi sul palco di Sanremo con le stesse canzoni che in rete si potranno ascoltare, ma non votare, gia’ dal 3 dicembre. Spariscono, dunque i “padrini” famosi.

GIURIA -  Alla ricerca del meccanismo perfetto, altra conferma, quella della giuria demoscopica del teatro Ariston e aumenta in modo significativo il peso del voto espresso dai musicisti della Sanremo Festival Orchestra. Resta, putroppo anche il televoto.

LE CINQUE SERATE – Martedì 16, canteranno gli Artisti, voterà la Giuria Demoscopica dell’Ariston. Verra’ stilata la graduatoria in base ai voti ricevuti nella serata e le 12 canzoni piu’ votate saranno ammesse alla Seconda Serata. Passerella di presentazione per gli 8 artisti Nuova Generazione.

 Seconda Serata, mercoledi’ 17 febbraio: Canteranno i 12 Artisti qualificati, vota la giuria demoscopica dell’Ariston. Verra’ stilata la graduatoria in base ai voti ricevuti nella serata e le 10 canzoni piu’ votate saranno ammesse alla quarta serata. A seguire canteranno 4 artisti della sezione Nuova Generazione votati dalla  giuria tecnica (Sanremo Festival Orchestra, con peso percentuale del 50%) e televoto (50%). I due brani piu’ votati saranno ammessi alla quarta serata. 

 Terza Serata, giovedì 18 febbraio:  ’Serata evento’ dedicata alla ‘leggenda’ di Sanremo, con 8 grandi artisti italiani e internazionali. Saranno poi eseguite le 4 canzoni degli Artisti non ammesse dalla giuria demoscopica nella due serate precedenti, votate per il 50% dalla giuria tecnica e per il 50% dal televoto. I quattro artisti proporranno  la propria canzone in ‘versione liberamente rivisitata’ affiancati da artisti ospiti italiani e/o stranieri. Verra’ stilata la graduatoria in base ai voti ricevuti nella serata, le 2 canzoni piu’ votate saranno ammesse alla quarta serata. Poi sul palco saliranno gli altri 4 giovani di Sanremo Nuova Generazione, votati per il 50% dalla Sanremo Festival Orchestra e per il 50% dal televoto. Le 2 canzoni piu’ votate saranno ammesse alla serata successiva. 

 Quarta Serata, venerdì 19 febbraio: Canteranno i 12 Artisti, votati da giuria tecnica (50%) e dal televoto (50%). Gli artisti proporranno la propria canzone in una ‘versione liberamente rivisitata’ affiancati da ospiti italiani e/o stranieri. Verra’ stilata la graduatoria in base ai voti ricevuti nella serata e le 10 canzoni piu’ votate saranno ammesse alla finale.  Questa sarà anche la serata finale di ”Sanremo Nuova Generazione”, con l’esecuzione dei 4 brani giunti allì’ultimo atto. Voto al 50% dalla giuria tecnica e al 50% del televoto), per proclamare il vincitore.

 Serata finale, sabato 20 febbraio: Sul palco saliranno 10 artisti, votati dalla giuria tecnica e dal pubblico attraverso il televoto: le 3 canzoni piu’ votate passano alla seconda fase della serata finale. Nuova esecuzione dei 3 motivi finalisti, sarà purtroppo il televoto a decretare il vincitore.

PRIME INDISCREZIONI SUI NOMI – Era circolata la voce della possibile presenza del supertrio Gigi D’Alessio, Massimo Ranieri, Pino Daniele con un brano in dialetto. D’Alessio ha smentito ufficialmente questa ipotesi, speriamo ci faccia la grazia di smentire anche una sua partecipazione solista. Non ci sarà nemmeno  Alessandra Amoroso, perchè la casa discografica ha detto di avere altri piani, probabile che qualcuno di Amici 2009 ci sarà.

Non Mario Nunziante, che è a SanremoLab e semmai sarà dunque fra i Giovani. Crescono le quotazioni di Valerio Scanu e Luca Napolitano: potrebbe esserci uno di questi due. Quasi certa la presenza i  gara fra i big della vincitrice della Novità 2009, Arisa, voci danno per certa anche la presenza di Matteo Becucci nonostante la recente uscita dell’album.

Denna tyska popgrupp som slog igenom 1975 har aldrig riktigt dött. Det kommer ut mixar, samlingar och olika versioner av hitlåtarna och senast kom albumet The magic of Boney M 2006.

During the Spring of 1979 I was in the 6TH grade at Magnolia Elementary School right in the middle of my Lanham Maryland neighbourhood.

The school day began at precisely 9:08 AM, and it ended at precisely 3:08 PM. Magnolia was my school for Kindergarten (1972-1973) and 3RD through 6TH grades (1975-1979). Those last 4 years at Magnolia were perhaps the happiest four years of all of my school years. It would just get miserable for me after that in Junior High and Senior High School (although I do remember occasional pockets of fun and good times during those advanced school years).

In 1979 I was a trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent Boy Scout:

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

It’s hard to believe that I’m 30 years removed from that part of my life. Some songs remind me of the bad times, but whenever I hear this song play it reminds me of some of those good times that I lived back then during my active preteen years.

Back in a decade far, far away, synthesizers and sequencers were starting to feature in everyday pop music. Initially only used by avantgardists like Stockhausen, Can and Kraftwerk (and the early wafty ambience pioneers like Jean Michel Jarre) they were  big as kitchen cabinets and fiendishly difficult to program. With the early eighties and the Japanese on the job, things became more compact, cheaper and easier to use. You didn’t have to have a masters in physics to get one going anymore. So the first synth pioneers of the eighties emerged: Depeche Mode 1981’s album ‘Speak and Spell’, New Order’s 1981 ‘Movement’, Human League’s 1981 ‘Dare’, though all sounding like a Texas Instrument calculator were all bold statements of what you could do with a Casio VL-1, a Jupiter-4 and a Linn LM-1. That collection of synthies probably still set you back 10.000$, but that’s much better than paying the price of a detached house for something that goes ‘plonk’ after you program it for 2 hours.

So after the pioneers of electronic music showed the world that you could produce a million selling album at home in your kitchen and put Sheffield, Manchester and, er, Basildon, firmly on the map, it was time for the rest of the world to get into the Groove (see what I’ve done there?). BTW, in 1981, when Europe was already having their own new electronic music revolution, the U.S. were still listening to Foreigner, REO Speedwagon and AC/DC. Figures.

2000km away from Basildon, in lovely and very unbasildonish Italy, the HI-NRG craze was just winding down, but as they were still plenty of synths lying around, some musicians decided to come up with an alternative to that cold, clinical electronic kaplonking that was going on up in thatcherite England. So they came up with some songs that were much more upbeat, ridiculously catchy and, er, very silly.  I give you the lyrics to Fun Fun’s 1982 hit ‘Happy Station’:

But wait, there’s more:  Den Harrow’s’ ‘Future Brain”  has even more lyrical depth

I quite like the fact that the chap is winng the race with his information. But there are very  few songs that top My Mine’s ‘Hypnotic Tango‘:

Take him apart indeed. The point here is of course that the lyrics didn’t matter at all. As most of the 16 year

olds jumping up and down to the music had pretty much the same senantic skills as the producers, there was really no point in employing the poet laureate to come up with something profound. Knowing that they wouldn’t look like much on a record sleeve or on a video, the producers of these semantically challenged little masterpieces would often hire a hunk (Den Harrow) or rent a dame (Valerie Dore) to front their projects, making it much easier on the eyes while the singing and programming would be done by somebody who knew what they were doing. This very meritocratic way of working resulted in some fascinating music. Not only danceable, but ultimately hummable.

Why in the world am I droning on about this, I here you ask? Well I recently found out that 3 of my favourite songs of all time, sung by afroamerican performers, were actually composed and produced by a cabale of Italians. Thinking about it now it make sense, as they so much more catchy than their ‘real’ American contemporary acts, but still quite a shock. The three tracks I refer to are:

• Amii Stewart: Friends
• Change: Change of heart
• BB&Q Band: Everybody’s dancing

So there you have it: Italo Disco, performed by Americans. For Germans. It doesn’t get much more international.

Lunedì parte l’edizione 2009 di X Factor che sceglierà i successori degli Aram Quartet, vincitori della prima serie e di Giusy Ferreri, trionfatrice di vendite e seconda all’arrivo. Nella giornata di ieri Mara Maionchi, insieme col vocal coach  Gaudì hanno scelto i quattro gruppi vocali che saranno in gara. Per seguire minuto per minuto, vi rimando al sito ufficiale del programma

FARIAS - Saranno ufficialmente i primi stranieri della manifestazione. Sono quattro fratelli argentini della Patagonia, con una buona esperienza televisiva (già visti a Domenica In, ma in fondo lo spirito di X factor è questo: valorizzare talenti ancora inespressi). Hanno tre singoli all’attivo (qui trovate “Soy Chehuen“), tutti di musica latina, principalmente india. Ma sono stati ammessi accettando di ampliare il loro genere musicale. S.O.S. SISTERS OF SOUL - esordienti, nate proprio in occasione dei provini. Belle, giovani, molto glamour, multietniche. A tratti ricordano le Lollipop, ma cantano molto meglio. Qui il provino.

(THE BASTARD SONS OF) DIONISO - La prima parte del nome è tra parentesi perchè la Maionchi potrebbe farli presentare solo come Dioniso. Trentini, belle voci, esordienti, trovate qualcosa della loro musica sul myspace. Nel provino che vi proponiamo, c’è una loro versione di “Help” dei Beatles.

SINACRIA SINPHONY – Scritto proprio con la N. A sentirli sembrano i migliori. Coro di sei elementi di notevolissimo livello. Siciliani, cantano di tutto, dalla sinfonica, al gospel, alle corali di chiesa, al musical. Hanno lavorato con Katia Ricciarelli, Elisa, Amii Stewart e cantato al Columbus Day a New York. Pluripremiati in vari festival italiani. Noi tifiamo per questi, ve lo diciamo subito. Qui c’è il loro myspace.

DANIELE MAGRO – agrigentino, voce jazz. Qui c’è il myspace. Classe 1989, è esordiente dal punto di vista discografico, ma in giro per la Sicilia ha fatto concerti eseguendo cover di pezzi famosi che trovate tutti sul suo spazio musicale

GIACOMO SALVIETTI -Qui il suo myspace. Classe 1990, di Camucia, in provincia di Arezzo. Ha cantato  a Caorle per il concorso “Centocittà” andato in onda su Rai Due. Adesso fa parte della nuova opera popolare di Riccardo Cocciante e Pasquale Panella “Giulietta e Romeo”. Il suo provino.

Diplomata all’Accademia d’Arte drammatica, ha frequentato il Saint Louis College of music dove studia canto. Collabora con il cantautore e compositore Bungaro.  Qui il suo myspace. Tifiamo per lei. MATTEO BECUCCI- Trentotto anni. livornese. Qui il suo myspace. Voce dei Mr Pitiful, vanta svariate esperienze musicali con artisti toscani ed internazionali, oltre a due anni di tournée con Sergio Caputo.

ENRICO NORDIO – Abbiamo trovato il myspace del suo gruppo, i Revolution, che fa musica folk rock anche in dialetto veneto. Nordio ne è il bassista. Originario di Venezia. Musica molto interessante, a sentirla, che ha colpito anche Massimo Bubola, cantautore  che ha prodotto alcuni loro lavori. Qui c’è un suo provino.

VERONICA SCOPELLITI – Di lei non si sa molto, pare però che qualche casa discografica abbia già drizzato le orecchie. Questo è il suo provino. Ha però un forum molto attivo. Se farà carriera il suo nome d’arte sarà Noemi.

Stewart is a singer-actress who in 1979 scored a massive hit with “Knock On Wood”. Stewart took an easy-going hit by Stax soulman Eddie Floyd, amped up the rhythm and the urgency and created one of the finest moments in disco. It is an irresistible club perennial that even in 2008 has people running for the dance-floor as soon as the iconic “thump – thump – thump” of the track is audible. It is deservedly one of the biggest-selling singles of the disco era. The album Knock On Wood followed that colossal single and well how could you top such an classic? So it is no surprise that the remainder of the album is eclipsed by that hit. The only other standout here is Stewart’s remake of The Doors’ “Light My Fire”, it starts slow and builds to a frenzied disco climax. The other uptempos are good but don’t necessarily standout from the pack. The funny thing here is the ballads. It seems to me that many disco singers actually come alive and show off when given the opportunity to sing a ballad. Not the case with Stewart, while she soars on the uptempo stuff the ballads on this album sink like stones. In fact, they almost sound like a different vocalist is singing them. On the disco stuff Stewart is the archetypal belting diva, on the ballads she adopts a shrill, high-pitched little girl’s voice and sounds like she’s singing at a junior high recital.

On this day in 1979, Amii Stewart went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Knock On Wood’.

Washington, D.C., vocalist Amii Stewart came whooping and shouting into the spotlight with an amazing though unconventional cover of Eddie Floyd’s “Knock on Wood.” Her boisterous vocal, coupled with a non-stop arrangement and equally unrestrained backing vocals, topped the pop charts in 1979 and reached number six on the R&B side. Stewart, who was in the Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar, did another remake as a follow-up, the Doors‘ “Light My Fire,” backed by “137 Disco Heaven.” It dissipated the initial momentum of the lead single, and things went downhill from there. Stewart later moved to Italy and had some singles issued on international labels before trying again in America on RCA in the mid-’80s.
