It’s quite cold in New York. This is both a good and bad thing. Good because I’m very fond of the cold–bad because…actually, not so bad. I just like the cold.

Amira finished her finals yesterday, so today she and I went out together to try and accomplish a to-do list (including things like purchasing gifts and visiting the Gluten-Free bakery in the Lower East Side.)

We walked from about noon to 6pm, and were both quite spent and chilled, so we decided to walk to the Museum of Modern Art, where Gabriel Orozco (an artist my dad collaborated with) and Tim Burton had exhibitions up. I don’t want to seem like I’m exaggerating, but this visit was actually pretty ridiculous. Friday afternoons the museum offers free entry, so we decided now was a good a time as any to see the work. We walked into the building, and were witness to something along the lines of mayhem. There were probably around 300 people in the lobby, and unfortunately I had a backpack with me, so we had to go to the coat check. Now, usually that statement doesn’t bear much weight, but the line to the coat check was outrageous. Amira and I stood in line for about 30 minutes, and finally made it, turned in our jackets and bags, and hurried upstairs (we knew that if we took too long to get our things back, the line would be outrageous on a different level completely.)

The lobby was definitely a clue as to how occupied the building was as a whole. Hundreds of people all over the place, clamoring about and stopping randomly to admire some bit of the architecture (which creates all kinds of traffic jams and walking-rhythm issues.) We walked toward the Orozco exhibiton, and were both quite surprised to find that it was only one room. That isn’t to say that the work wasn’t impressive (it was definitely interesting,) just that after such a long wait, we were kind of underwhelmed by the experience. After that, we decided to find the Tim Burton show and were once again disappointed: they stopped letting in the people with the free tickets. We quickly returned to the coat check, and luckily didn’t have to wait long to get our things back.

To summarize, we spent about 40 minutes in line to turn in and retrieve our belongings, and we spent probably 10 minutes looking at actual work.

Well whatever. It was nice to be with Amira, and that’s what really matters! I’m leaving New York tomorrow, and because I’m flying international and taking the subway, I’ll be leaving with probably about 4 and a half hours to spare before my flight, just in case.

This evening we’re headed to party at a friend of Amira and Steve’s from school. Should be a lot of fun.

First of all this time: New York is really really cool. Every time I come here I’m reminded how exhilarated I get in a big city. I do get more excited about New York than San Francisco though, and I’m not sure why. It may be the cold (which I love). That being said–I’m not leaving the bay area. I like it too much.

My flight arrived almost 45 minutes early, and I spent about an hour and a half goofing off on the internet at the beginning of the flight, so I didn’t get much sleep. At 7:00am (ish) I got my bag and took the subway to Manhattan, which took almost two hours, and walked to Amira’s apartment. Seeing her is wonderful, and it’s unfortunate that my time here will be short, but it looks like it’s going to be packed with fun while it lasts.

After we chatted for about an hour I passed out on her couch, when the exhaustion from the flight finally hit me. I slept for a couple of hours and then met her and a friend of hers at a cafe a few blocks away. I got a huge cup of coffee and began reading “The Power of Babel” by John McWhorter (Sorry Mom, I took it without asking.) It’s nice to remember how much I like Linguistics. I ran an errand for Amira (I walked to Whole Foods at Union Square) and while walking I realized how comfortable I feel just listening to music and exploring. If I can feel comfortable in NY, I can feel comfortable anywhere.

Right now I’m listening to her rattle off in Legalese while she studies for her finals, and when she finishes with them (tomorrow), we’ll celebrate by seeing the Princess and the Frog together. Should be good times.

Through the online magazine Feature Shoot I discovered an artist whose work I’m currently quite smitten with, Amira Fritz. The color palette and subject matter of her style are both extremely seductive to me. Please enjoy a few chosen images on this blog. Some basic info, Amira was born 1979 in Rosenheim, Germany, moved to Vienna to study photography and graduated in 2002. Now this is the part I love, During her time in Vienna she was an assistant to the photographer Reiner Riedler and worked as a film projectionist! This in particular influenced her photographic work! She had an earlier fashion series in the year that Jörg Colberg bloggeed about and can be found here.

Well, about an hour ago I embarked from San Francisco International Airport on an indefinitely long

Well, about an hour ago I embarked from San Francisco International Airport on an indefinitely long tour of (some of) the world. To begin this blogging experience, I’m going to describe to you lovely people some of the events that occurred as the trip’s beginning loomed ever closer over my head.

After several discussions with varied planning “partners,” last minute changes in planning have lead to not a catastrophic change in cast, but a change nonetheless. This trip was to begin in New York with my sister, and move to London where I would have met with my parents, but now it appears that only my mother will be joining me. My father will be missed, but I assure you that there will be ample amounts of photographs and words in an attempt to make up for your absence.

Today (being Tuesday) is the day I departed for this trip. Sunday (being two days before my departure), the Hard Drive on my beloved MacBook suddenly spun down and stopped working. This, as you may have guessed, sent me into quite a panic. All of my schoolwork from college was gone (meaning applying to graduate schools would have been far more challenging), all of the work I’ve recently put in to a piece of writing was gone (very disappointing, as I was getting pretty engaged with it), all of my photos were gone (which just sucks), etc. etc.

I made the earliest appointment at the apple store on Monday morning to see if there was any chance at all of recovering the data, and was given both good and bad news. The good: my computer was still under warranty, so any work that might be done on the laptop would be completely covered. The bad: my hard drive was porked, and my data potentially destroyed forever. I was recommended by the kind gentleman at the Genius Bar to seek the aid of Lazarus Data Recovery in San Francisco, so I immediately left for the city and took the failing hard drive in for examination.

It’s still there. Hopefully they can recover my data…

Moving on to a completely different subject, I want to publicly thank Shimone and Maribelle (my brother and sister-in-law) for their hospitality. I can’t imagine how difficult and different my life would have been over the last few months without their kindness and generosity. They opened their home without question, and offered time and time again valuable advice on everything from future plans to current reading to spiritual well being to motorcycle choice. I am so grateful to have such a wonderful relationship with my siblings (and my nephew, Eliseo, who I will miss dearly as well).

Speaking of siblings, the first stage of my trip is New York, where I will be seeing my sister Amira for the first time since graduation. She and I are extremely close, so it is probably quite obvious to those who know me well that this is very exciting to me.

I arrive at 7:45am local time, and since I’m losing time, I probably ought to get some sleep. I’m not going to make any promises about frequency of updates, but if you sign up for the email or RSS feed (to the right, just below the Flickr and Twitter feeds) you won’t have to keep coming back to check if anything new has been posted.

We’ve just found out that the intervention text that ECO delivered is on the news: TimesOnline and Fox.

Read our text below!

____________________________________________

Thank you for the floor, Madam President. I speak on behalf of the youth when I say that we value the opportunity to address the Conference on this critical day.

We have recently been made aware that some of you present in this room are proposing a fundamental overhaul of the UN process. You have proposed a new framework that will overturn the balance of obligations and responsibilities enshrined in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

You have erected barriers to exclude your peers from influencing their own futures, and in turn, have acted contrary to very principles of inclusion and equality that lies at the core of the United Nations. This imposition without discussion is tantamount to carbon colonialism—a profoundly destructive development that the youth are compelled to condemn.

Madam President, we call on all parties to respect the UN process and the values which buttress it. We posit that an agreement that creates divisions erodes the good faith that we need to address the fierce urgency of addressing climate change.

The youth urge all parties to remain accountable for their historical contributions to this global crisis. We maintain that all countries should uphold and enhance the Kyoto protocol and deliver on their promises for an adequate adaptation fund that is democratically-run and accountable to the UN treaty.

Madam President, we face an unprecedented challenge that calls for unity and responsibility. It is not enough to say “yes we can” but rather “yes we can, yes we must, yes we will.”
Thank you, Madam President.

A brief explanation about “Interventions” — During Plenary Sessions (which gather representatives of member states to discuss issues such as Joint Implementation, Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM), etc.), opportunities are given to observers, such as NGOs, to voice their opinions. These are the so-called “Interventions”.

We are very proud that our fellow ECO Singapore-an, Amira Karim, was selected to represent today’s YOUNGO intervention! We may be tiny, but mind you, we are feisty~!

Spending my Saturday at home today, preparing for the very important Egypt football match, looking through facebook to find something to blog about. I came across a new facebook group called, Amira El Helaly, wondering did I find a new up & coming designer?? After having a look at the pictures, something struck my eye, this collection looks awfully like a blend of Amina K., Mimz for Hebz, and Horreya. In addition, the model’s sultry look in the pictures is bothering me (she is trying too hard). Its taking my eye away from the clothes and you never want that! Despite that, at least we have a new local designer based in Heliopolis, for the Helio crowd. The collection includes belts, tops, and dresses (I have to admit I love the printed fabric of the belts!). They are hosting an open day on November 20th, at 6 Ghana Street (when Chilis is on your right, continue down the road for 2 km and take a left at Piraeus Bank, its the 1st right on the 5th floor). Have a look the group, here, you might find its worth it. I’ll keep you posted if I hear more.

http://www.amiravis.com/documentation/521/amira/usersguide/tutmatlab.html 2.14 Using MATLAB Scripts

http://www.amiravis.com/documentation/521/amira/usersguide/tutmatlab.html

2.14 Using MATLAB Scripts

In this tutorial you will learn how to integrate complex calculus into Amira using MATLAB (The MathWorks, Inc) by the means of the CalculusMatlab module.

In order to use the CalculusMatlab module, MATLAB 7 must be correctly installed on your computer. The CalculusMatlab module establishes a connection to the MATLAB computational engine that was registered during installation. If you did not register during installation, on the Windows command line you can enter the command:

matlab /regserver

The limitations of the CalculusMatlab module are listed in its documentation.

This tutorial covers the following topics:

Loading and executing a MATLAB script.

Lowpass filtering on images.

Controlling the script with a time slider.

Thresholding on a volume.

2.14.1 Lowpass Filtering on Images

In this section we will learn how to apply a lowpass filter on an Amira image using the MATLAB Fourier transformation. This example shows how to pass data and control variables from Amira to MATLAB, execute a MATLAB script, and import the data back into Amira

.

Load the lena.png image file located in subdirectory data/tutorials/matlab.

Choose Luminance in the Channel Conversion field as shown in Figure 34.

Right click on the green icon and choose CalculusMatlab from the Compute section.

A new red icon appears, the CalculusMatlab module that will try to connect to the MATLAB engine. This may take a while.

Figure 34: Loading the image

Load the script lowpass.m located in subdirectory data/tutorials/matlab by clicking the Read button of the File port.

Execute the script by clicking on the buffer button of the Execute port.

Connect an OrthoSlice to the filtered image result.

The module uses the MATLAB computation engine which has its own user interface.

You can easily show or hide the MATLAB console using the checkbox in the options field. The MATLAB console is very useful for debugging purposes because it allows you to access variables of the MATLAB workspace. Any variable not cleared by the MATLAB “clear” command in the script is accessible in the MATLAB workspace, even after finishing the current CalculusMatlab computation (see the CalculusMatlab documentation).

Figure 35: The CalculusMatlab module

In addition you can control scalar parameters of the script using time sliders:

Create a time slider (File/Create/Data/Time).

Connect the CalculusMatlab module to the time slider.

Change the line cutoff=0.05 to cutoff=t in the script (see the CalculusMatlab documentation for more information about the keyword t).

Click on the time slider and adjust the value that will be assigned to w. Right mouse click in the text field of the time slider and select Configure to adjust the data range of the parameters.

Figure 36: Left: original Right: lowpass filtered

Note: To handle RGBA image filtering, you must load the image with Color Field Channel Conversion and treat each channel separately in the script.

2.14.2 Thresholding on a Volume

In this section we will learn how to apply a threshold to a volume. This is done by setting a value for a threshold. If the value for the voxel is less than the threshold, the voxel value is assigned the value of zero. If it is above the threshold, it is assigned a value of 255.

Load the file lobus.am located in subdirectory data/tutorials.

Right click on the green icon and choose CalculusMatlab from the Compute section.

Load the script threshold.m located in subdirectory data/tutorials/matlab by clicking the Read button of the File port.

Execute the script by clicking on the buffer button of the Execute port.

A new green icon appears, the Lattice that will hold the threshold result. Connect an OrthoSlice or a Voltex to see the result.

Note: Any variable accessed by MATLAB and pushed back into the Amira workspace will lose its voxel size information. You will need to correct the voxel size manually using the Crop Editor.

This popular Arabic name comes directly from the Arabic word for a prince, ruler, commander, or admiral. In the Arabic speaking world, it is used as an honoric title of nobility, office or someone with high eminence. The word itself is derived from the Arabic root amr meaning “to command.” The early Islamic caliphs used the title Amir al-Muninin meaning “Commander of the Faithful”, a reference of their leadership over the adherants of the Islamic faith. The title was assumed by other Islamic rulers, including sheiks and sultans throughout Central Asia all the way into Saudi Arabia. The leader of a group of pilgrims to Mecca is often referred to as an amir. It is used a given name throughout the Islamic world, the name can be found as far North as Russia, where it is often used by the country’s ethnic Russian Muslim population. It is even used in Latvia, in the form of Amirs, its designated name-day being September 8th. The name was introduced into Latvia during the Soviet era, when millions of Russians were displaced throughout the Soviet Union. Among these Russian migrants were Russian Muslims, the name Amir being common. The name was adapted into Latvian as Amirs and found its way into the Latvian calender. Likewise, the name can be found in the former Republic of Yugoslavia, in the form of Emir, where the name is prevalent among the ethnic Bosnian and Albanian populations. The name is not of unheard of in the United States, France, the Netherlands and Germany, due to large immigration from the Middle East, Central Asia and Asia Minor. In the United States, the name currently comes in at #297, in the Netherlands, Amir ranks in at #223. Other forms of the name include the Turkish Emir, its feminine forms are Emira and Amira, often translated as “princess.” In 2008, Amira ranked in at # 765. Emira is a common Bosnian female name. Amir is also a Hebrew male name, but of a completely different etymology. In Hebrew, Amir means “treetop.”

http://www.imft.fr/recherche/gemp/theme1/operation13.html Le couplage entre l’activité neurona

http://www.imft.fr/recherche/gemp/theme1/operation13.html

Der Fisch stinkt vom Kopf her, sagt man. Sei’s drum.

Aber Meistermein sagt jeweilen: “Amira, du bist kein Fisch, also halt jetzt mal her!” Und so vertreibt er mit den Gestank. Wobei: Vielleicht bin ich doch ein Fisch. Ein klein wenig jedenfalls. Zumindest dann, wenn ich im Wasser bin.
