As the London 2012 Olympics opening event draws near, Trend Micro Researchers have spotted some spam

As the London 2012 Olympics opening event draws near, Trend Micro Researchers have spotted some spammed messages using the 2012 Olympics as bait, one involved an email that says “winning notification”, another message asks for personal details in exchange for a prize, and another that asks users to notify a specific contact person. Users who fall for any of these traps are at risk of having their information stolen or their machines infected with malware. Some spam may even lead to monetary loss.

Amit Nath, Country Manager – India and SAARC, Trend Micro, said, “Attackers are still using these because these scams are still giving them successful margins. Social engineering has worked for years and there are little signs of that changing. So long as users are still falling for this trap, scammers will continue to create new spam runs using events like the London Olympics to make a quick buck.”

Trend Micro Researchers have also encountered several messages supposedly related to London Olympics 2012 that arrive with attachments disguised as “winning notifications” and contain the details of the prize. Curious users who download and open the attachments are actually executing malicious files.

Amit Nath, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Trend Micro, said, “After establishing our strong leadership among the Enterprise and SMB segment for the last six years in India, we are now poised to address the consumer segment with our Titanium Brand. India consumer business, which is pegged at more than Rs.1,000+ crore, is growing at a rapid pace YOY. Trend Micro already has a global leadership position in the consumer segment, which contributes more than 50% of its $1.2 billion revenue. We strongly believe that, with our strong R&D strength in the security domain, we will be providing the consumers in India with a robust security solution across the Windows and Mac platforms. We are looking at capturing a 20% consumer market share by 2014. As we understand, the Channel segment plays a major role in this consumer business, Trend Micro has already started aligning and strengthening our existing channel partners and also looking at reaching 3,000 channel partners by the end of this financial year.”

“As our go-to-market strategy is to establish Titanium as the leading antivirus solution for the consumers, our marketing strategies have started to address both the channel and consumers for getting the brand share. We are soon launching our 30 city road shows across India for the channel partners. Again, as the Indian consumer is fast adapting the Tablets / Smartphone for net access, Trend Micro was the FIRST company to provide FREE Smartphone or Tablet security (Android, IOS, Windows & Symbian platform) with Titanium Maximum Security for consumers having multiple devices, apart from PC or Laptop,” said Rajat Sahu, Product Marketing manager, India and SAARC, Trend Micro.
