80 The Breeders – Title TK (2002) (left) – I’ve forgiven Kim Deal for the bodily injury inflicted on me in 1994. I have also forgiven her for taking her time between Breeders albums. I think many people were disappointed with Title TK as it had no “Cannonball” and felt more like a home demo than an album 8 years in the making (well, it might not have been in the making for all those years).

79 Amon Tobin – Supermodified (2000) – I remember having a conversation with someone in 2000 about how electronic wasn’t just a flash in the pan but it was hear to stay. Sadly, looking back on that, it was sort of like Homer claiming that the height of rock and roll was Grand Funk Railroad. It doesn’t mean that the decade was bereft of excellent electronic, it just means that it quickly receded into the background (or hybridized effectively).

78 Passion Pit – Manners (2009) – Speaking of which, this might be a prime example of the electro-hybridization. There is a level of uncomfortableness in the album, maybe with the forced falsetto vocals or children yelling the chorus, but really, that is what made it so fascinating. Or maybe I just like music that makes me feel a little uneasy, much like …

77 Xiu Xiu – Fabulous Muscles (2004) – I give a lot of people a hard time for listening to bands that I consider, well, unlistenable because all they seem to do is f&%k around with instruments and suddenly get praised for their genius. Then I think that I might not have an appendage on which to stand because of my undying love for Xiu Xiu. Too bad, I’m going to go on living with this inconsistency.

76 The Faint – Danse Macabre (2001) - My friend Melissa, who seems to have vanished into oblivion, introduced me to the Faint in a record store somewhere in Cambridge. I probably spent a good part of the next year listening to this album.

75 New Pornographers – Mass Romantic (2001) (right) – I checked both Mass Romantic and Electric Version out from the Corvallis Public Library (nice job on the part of the music purchasers there), not really knowing what to expect beyond the fact that I had read “hey, the New Pornographers are good.” The last thing I expected was a pile of power pop that was like a lo-fi revival of the Cars (but better).

74 Hot Chip – Made in the Dark (2008) – Sometimes I think that Hot Chip will slowly climb into the top 10 of my favorite bands – sort of like a Pet Shop Boys 2.0. Made in the Dark did nothing to dispel that notion.

73 YACHT – I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real (2007) – I think this album is a fine example of what happens when a band that spent too much time dithering around on previous albums trying to be “experimental” sits down and tries to write pop songs. And yes, it works like a charm. Note to many bands: being catchy and succinct isn’t a sin.

72 Ratatat – Remixes Vol. 1 and 2 (2004/2007) – Maybe I cheated a little bit by including these unreleased (well, released briefly for free on the internet) remix albums on this list, but very few ‘mix tape’ adventures had as much of an impact on my listening habits as Ratatat’s. I eagerly await Vol. 3.

71 Tilly & the Wall – Wild Like Children (2004) (left) – I am a sucker for charming bands and Tilly & the Wall turned the charm dial up to 11. Tap dance percussion? Check. Mixed male-female vocals? Check. Songs about love? Check. They might be a little gimmicky, but you know, sometimes that AOK.

I found this podcast from 2008 but it’s such an awesome selection of tunes that it’s well worth bringing it to your attention. This is a great example of where dubstep works incredibly well with other genres. This is the future!

Seguimos investigando cosas del productor brasileño. Éste LP es el siguiente después del tremendo “Supermodified”. La verdad es que la esencia continúa siendo la misma, poco se diferencia este álbum de su predecesor. Eso es unos temas electrónicos con regusto a trip-hop, pero con miles de influencias distintas en cada tema, del jazz al break beat, pasando por sonidos propios de la banda sonora de cualquier thriller hollywoodiense, samplers de hip-hop o guitarreos supermodificados.

Todo ello consigue envolvernos con una tensión moderada, con una suavidad que se acerca al placer físico y con una habilidad sobrehumana de conjuntar de manera armónica los sonidos a su disposición. Incluso a ratos recuerda al genial  “Endtroducing…” de Dj Shadow. Amon Tobin devora influencias sin parar y te las escupe en la cara con estilo, en forma de 11 cortes sobresalientes.

The Bristol sound, also known as trip-hop, was born from the British hip-hop and house scenes of the mid-1990s. Artists like Massive Attack, DJ Shadow and Portishead took the hybrid genre and turned it into a hip-hop-influenced electronica that harnessed a fanbase that reached between the Atlantic. Michael Buble's Crazy Love's record sales skyrocketed past New Moon's this week after an appearance on Oprah

Not even the New Moon crew could use their vampire powers to outdo Michael Buble’s release of Crazy Love, reports Rolling Stone. The crooner appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, causing album sales to skyrocket to over 55% more than during the record’s first week on shelves, outdoing the new Twilight soundtrack by a score of 203,000 to 115,000, respectively, according to the Nielsen SounScan. Oh, the power of Oprah.

Stereogum gives us a look at last night’s Grizzly Bear gig at the Hollywood Palladium in L.A. with some pretty sweet pictures courtesy of Andrew Youssef. Beach House, the opening act, played a few tracks that will appear on their new release, Teen Dream, due out from Sub Pop Records on January 26^th.

Seattle’s post-hardcore pioneers The Blood Brothers practiced one of the 2000s’ most unique forms of punk, and after their breakup in 2007, fans were left with little to cling to other than their old Blood Brother’s records. Until now, that is. Epitaph Records is planning to re-release the entire The Blood Brothers‘ catalogue, minus their 2000 debut, This Adultery Is Ripe, reports Pitchfork. Look for it to the reissues, which will come stocked by B-sides, videos and live performance videos, when they drop on November 17.

Canada’s Kid Koala, Dynomite D and Wolfmother’s ex-rhythm section Chris Ross and Myles Heskett make up the psych group Slew. Their debut release, 100%, is set to be reissued by Ninja Tune, the label responsible for the likes of Amon Tobin, Blockhead, Bonobo and The Bug, just to name a few, reports Pitchfork. Look for the turntable-heavy sounds of Slew when the record drops on November 24^th.

Otro disco de trip hop, pero esta vez a niveles impresionantes. Amon Tobin es el alias de un conocido productor brasileño, afincado en San Francisco. Elabora un sonido que va del trip hop al drum’n bass, pasando por otros géneros como el breakbeat. Sus composiciones poseen una alta influencia del jazz, incluyendo instrumentos sampleados tales como contrabajos, saxos o clarinetes. Haciéndose un nombre en la escena con su primer alias, “Cujo”, Amon Tobin fichó también con el prestigioso sello Ninja Tune, caracterizado por la gran calidad de los artistas que lo componen.

Este “Supermodified” es el cuarto album de Amon Tobin en dicho sello. Probablemente el álbum más accesible para el público. Atmósferas que van de lo onírico a lo industrial, unos graves que hacen retumbar las paredes, samplers jazzísticos que te ponen los pelos de punta, sintetizadores “mágicos” que hacen que te vayas de viaje con los marcianitos… Una locura de disco vamos. Suena como la banda sonora de una película de ciencia ficción a lo Akira. Increíble.

DAI 525 – Graphic Design 3

I have a new dedication to this blog and making sure that it is updated at least once a week, so be sure to check back. This I promise is not an ephemeral dedication. Due to immense pressure (no pressure at all really, they’re terrific) from two of my peers, Gritchelle Fallesgon and Kimberly Lauren Radich, who are my main two sources of motivation and inspiration at school, I have realized that making time to do the craft and design work that is personal to me is important.

Here is a quick run through of the process of designing a music translation piece for the artist Amon Tobin. I was originally given the choice by my prefessor Josh Singer from three different songs and I was quickly attached to Nightlife by the man mentioned above (I recommend checking out his music to anyone who has a open mind, he does some amazing things). This is only a quick snap shots of different points through out the process, but I think it does a good job showing the progression. The final picture is a behind the scenes shot of sorts, showing what the final construction looks like from the side. It reveals the depth of the objects and what is supporting them.

Amon Tobin does all his work digitally, so naturally I hand made mine. I will let the work tell it’s own story, since that is what is supposed to do. Please tell me what you do and don’t like about what I have done.

Just to name a few: Les Claypool, Coco Rosie, Amon Tobin, Bassnectar, Freeland Live Band, Caspa, Flying Lotus, Glitch Mob, N-Type, Pretty Lights, Beats Antique, Bluetech, an-ten-nae, Heyoka, Lipp Service, Mimosa, Of Porcelain, Vibesquad, Welder, Babylon System and over a hundred more. Visual arts are also a major focus of Symbiosis, and you will find large-scale art installations, body art, a graffiti mural, a full-size art gallery space and live painting and workshops from many talented creators including Alex and Alyson Grey. Performing artists will also roam the venue and inject the community with the wild, the weird, and the wonder-inspiring. Come and join in the fun!

Transformational learning and integrated education is also central to the Symbiosis philosophy, and there will be workshops, playshops, discussions and presentations on a wide variety of subjects from esoteric philosophy and embodied movement to sacred geometry and composting alchemy. Our “Wellness Oasis” has a variety of resources to rejuvenate your body, nurture your spirit, and expand your mind with reiki, acupuncture, tai chi, Capoeira, juggling and much more.

And more! We have organic food vendors, sustainable arts and craft merchants in the tribal market, a kids’ area, guided nature walks, eco-arting, a lake for splash wars and water wings, and dishwashing stations to help you make this a no trash, carry-in, carry-out event.

Amon Tobin – Foley Room [Ninja Tune, 2007]

Has you may, or may not know, Tobin had created music through the sampling of old vinyl records. However, Foley Room is a marked departure from his traditional technique. Inspired by the foley rooms where sound effects are recorded for films, Tobin decided to record and work with original samples for the record. According to the Ninja Tune website, “Amon and a team of assistants headed out into the streets with high sensitivity microphones and recorded found sounds from tigers roaring to cats eating rats, neighbours singing in the bath to ants eating grass”. @ wikipedia

Un peu d’electro ? Ca vous dit ? Voici du tout bon :

Jacopo Carreras “From Bed to Couch”
Un Romain installé à Berlin qui sort son premier album sur le label Lan distribué par Kompakt, ça ne vous titille pas ? Moi, oui. De l’electro qui roule bien , des breaks, des cordes tordues, des bruits, des craquements… Un disque qui entre dans différents univers. Y a qu’à écouter “One Sentence” plutôt dance répétitive et “Il Vuoto Non E” beaucoup plus débridé. Malgré l’épaisseur grandissante de son catalogue, Kompakt reste vigilant quant à la qualité de ses productions ou associations. On n’en attendait pas moins.

SND “Atavism”
Après de longues années d’absence, et la disparition du label Mille-Plateaux, le duo formé par Mat Steel et Mark Fell a migré chez Raster-Noton pour sortir leur nouveau disque.  Une electro minimale, assez froide et chirugicale sur laquelle des glitches et des interférences viennent se greffer petit à petit,  ou des thèmes synthétiques au clavier qui évoluent petit à petit et finissent par faire taper du pied. Une pochette d’une sobriété minimale enveloppe le cd.

Two Fingers
Derrière ce nom se cachent Amon Tobin - platiniste brésilien tout à fait épatant – et le producteur anglais Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. Trois mc’s ont été conviés pour rapper sur le projet.  Sway dont la voix apparaît sur la majorité des plages, Ms.Jade et Ce’Cile. Tout ça nous donne un mélange palpitant d’electro et de rap. Une bande son faite de samples d’instruments, de bruitages, de collages, de percussions … genre auquel Tobin nous avait déjà habitué avec son album précédent Un disque paru chez Big Dada, label hip hop des plus intéressant.

Film “Taxidermia” (2006) młodego węgierskiego reżysera Györgyego Pálfi jest dziełem, obok którego nie można przejść obojętnie. Opowieść o trzech pokoleniach pewnej nietypowej węgierskiej rodziny będzie dla niektórych wspaniałą ucztą dla oka i ucha. Wysmakowana kolorystyka, znakomite zdjęcia i rewelacyjna scenografia działają naprawdę hipnotycznie. Muzykę zaś współtworzył Amon Tobin co stanowi gwarancję niesamowitego nastroju. Z drugiej strony ci, którzy niespecjalnie gustują w seksie ze zwierzętami, wymiocinach i obdzieraniu ze skóry, mogą nie dotrwać do końca filmu.  Szkoda, że “Taxidermia” nie znalazła polskiego dystrybutora i przeszła w kraju całkowicie bez echa.

Dla tych, którzy nie mają ochoty przez półtorej godziny taplać się w błocie, łoju, tłuszczu i krwi, proponuję jedną z piękniejszych scen filmu, z tych nie epatujących wydzielinami i fizycznością:

Nie da się ukryć, że produkcja dema nie była łatwa. W zasadzie to zawsze jest piekło. Takoż odpoczywając od dłubania w dźwięku nabrałem nowych przyzwyczajeń.

Włączam muzykę, ale cichutko. Nie powinna koncentrować uwagi, raczej ma stać się tłem. Do tego herbata (jak zwykle – zielona, indonezyjska) i książka, albo “kapownik filozofa”. Tak wyglądają przerwy w pracy z muzyką.

Dziwne, ale ostatnio zacząłem znowu pisać. Tym razem całość jakoś sama płynie. Myślałem, że mam w głowie pomysł na opowiadanie, jednak to nie ja prowadzę bohaterów a oni mnie. To ciekawe ale męczące. Napisałem, może trzydzieści procent opowiadania i musiałem to odłożyć na kilka dni. Bohaterem jest polski doktor medycyny, który postanowił poświęcić się leczeniu biednych ludzi w państwach kolonialnych Ameryki Środkowej. Lekarz trafia na Haiti, gdzie ma zająć się przypadkiem dziecka, któremu coś odebrało duszę. Wynik starcia nauki z afrykańskimi wierzeniami wcale nie musi być jednoznaczny.

Ostatnio zwiększyła się lista moich ulubionych filozofów. Obok Sokratesa, Seneki, Kanta i Voltaire’a pojawił się propagujący socjalizm egzystencjalista – Sartre. Sam nie wiem co mnie ujmuje najbardziej, czy jest to fenomenologia w ontologii, czy jego  talent literacki? Być może postawa nonkonformistyczna.

Troszeczkę lżej ale nadal na czerwono… stwierdzam, że drobiazgowe podziały na czerwonych, białych, różowych, prawych, lewych… są i tak nieistotne z perspektywy absolutu. Kumpel, który zastrzelił mnie kiedyś książką “MW” Łysiaka teraz podsunął pod nos zbiór felietonów Pilcha. Świetny i bardzo lekki język. Na początku zachwycił mnie sposób wypowiedzi, Pilch prowadzi czytelnika jak przez bajkę, obecnie nie zauważam języka a to świadczy o umiejętnościach pisarza. Jak skończę felietony zabiorę się za książki. Zdaje się, że pan Jerzy jest dosyć dziwną, ciekawą postacią.

Muzyczka. Jak wspomniałem – lubię czytać przy muzyce. Wczoraj wieczorem do kolekcji doszły trzy płyty.

Peter Kruder – Peace Orchestra. Lubię określenie – muzyka o wielu warstwach. Wspaniały sampling instrumentalny, którego owocem jest jazz w formule broken beats, czyli połamany, synkopowany rytm. To łączy się z trip-hopem. Całość jest stonowana i przebogata rytmicznie. Nic się nie narzuca a trudno się oderwać. Płyta wydana przez !K7.

Amon Tobin – Bricolage. Pierwsza płyta Tobina wydana pod szyldem Ninja Tune. No i nie zamierzam tego opisywać. Moi drodzy posłuchajcie utworu otwierającego płytę.

Na tej płycie znajdziecie także utwór Easy Muffin – wykorzystany przez polski duet Skalpel na stronie A mixtape’u “Virtual Cuts” (jako podkład pod wokalem Björk).

Cujo – Adventures in Foam. Pod pseudonimem Cujo ukrywa się wspomniany wyżej Amon Tobin. Adventures in Foam to jego debiutancki album, składa się z dwóch płyt. Całość jest raczej rozrywkowa, miejscami naprawdę bardzo dynamiczna, dlatego raczej nie nadaje się do czytania i zamyślenia. Adventures in Foam jest jedynym albumem wydanym przez Tobina jako Cujo. Później podpisał kontrakt z Ninja Tune i do dzisiaj wydaje pod swoim nazwiskiem.

P.S. Kiedy coś określam jako “dziwne” to mam na myśli jak najbardziej pozytywny sens. Na płycie Bricolage znajdziecie więcej sampli Skalpela niż  ten wspomniany. Zamierzam poznac cały dorobek literacki Sartre’a co zaś się tyczy Pilcha to gdyby ktoś miał szczególne przemyślenia odnośnie dzieł literackich – proszę o komentarze. Nie chciałbym kupować książek na ślepo

Two Fingers est l’association d’Amon Tobin et de Double Click. La carrière d’Amon Tobin a toujours été intéressante à suivre pour les virages inattendus qu’il a su lui donner. Toujours légèrement en marge de ce qu’on attendait de lui, il arrive avec chaque nouveau projet à ajouter un petite dose d’imprévu, d’étonnant. Sortie chez Big Dada, cette nouvelle bifurcation le voit s’engager dans une voie entrecroisant la production post-Timbaland avec le hiphop à l’anglaise.

Si l’on fait abstraction des textes un peu crétins du rappeur anglais Sway, tentant désespérement de sonner profond et dur à la fois, et n’accouchant que de platitudes pathétiques (“ce n’est pas l’argent qui est en tort, c’est l’avidité des gens”), l’album possède de bons moments vocaux, lorsque cette voix se fond dans l’impressionante masse d’antimatière générée par ses deux collègues. Amon Tobin poursuit en effet les aspects les plus sombres de sa musique, que renforcent encore les emprunts au grime et au dubstep de cette présente collaboration. Il est à porter à son crédit de ne pas faire de chaque nouvel album un demi-tour qui serait dicté par l’air du temps, mais au contraire de persister dans l’accumulation de styles et d’influences qu’il a entamée dès ses débuts en 1996, augmentant à chaque fois sa palette, y ajoutant des éléments drum’n bass ou techstep comme des samples de percussions de son Brésil natal, timbal, caixa, tarol, atabaque ou pandeiro.
