This Flat Amplified one pulls in most of the available channels, and if I play with the direction of the panel I can get the 2-3 missing ones. I like the generous length of co-ax, so I did not need any extensions.
Delivery: It got home in 3 days – totally amazing!
The beauty of the “1450″ is its size: I placed it on top and back of a wall unit and no one can see it. The price in Amazon.com fluctuates all over the place, so look and try to get the lowest available – thru Amazon, of course!

BTW, why do they list “Sound quality” for an antenna attribute??

A seguire Marion Jarvis con Get It su etichetta Roxbury.

Skream sta remixando parecchia gente importante negli ultimi tempi (Bat For Lashes, Laroux, Dave Gahan…)e adesso tocca a Chromeo con Night By Night: electro soul r’n'b’ meets dubstep.

A chiudere il giapponese Dj Juko e Amplified Orchestra con Fun Thing apoteosi nu disco tra 303, archi e sinth a rotella.

Passo e chiudo.

Alla prossima.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have never used this antenna, and I am writing this because no

In the interest of full disclosure, I have never used this antenna, and I am writing this because none of the other people who have written a review have bothered to properly test it against a standard folded dipole antenna. To do such a test properly, you would need to place both antennae in the exact same location and orientation, not at the same time of course. Terk makes a lot of antennae that include built-in amplifiers, and on the packaging they quote the antenna gain, not the gain of the antenna itself. This is wrong and misleading. Common sense should tell you that if an amplifier could make up for a poor signal coming from the antenna itself, you could turn any crummy antenna into an excellent antenna simply by adding amplification. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. What matters to the receiver is not the absolute strength of the signal, but rather the signal-to-noise ratio. The only way that it is possible for an amplifier located at the antenna to improve the result is if the amount of noise that is being picked up in the transmission line between the antenna and the receiver is greater than the amount of noised added to the signal within that same amplifier. When the transmission line is long, the signal will experience attenuation, and in this case it can make sense to boost the signal at the antenna, the effect of which will be to keep the absolute strength of the signal high relative to the level of noise picked up along the transmission line. Thus, if the amplifier is doing anything at all in a typical home setup, it is only compensating for a transmission line that does not do a good job of shielding the signal from noise. It is therefore no surprise that several people who have experimented with turning off the amplifier have reported that the amplifier does not seem to do anything. The common folded dipole that you buy at Radio Snack or elsewhere uses 300-ohm flat lead transmission wire, which is not particularly good at protecting the signal from noise. Coaxial wire is inordinately superior. People who are reporting good results with this antenna might well get equivalent results with a $5 folded dipole but using two 300-Ohm / 75-Ohm adapters, one located right at the antenna and the other at the receiver so that shielded coax can be used over the distance that separates the antenna from the receiver. In all likelihood, the true reason that this antenna is giving many people better results than a cheap folded dipole, has nothing to do with the built-in amplifier, but is due to the use of coaxial transmission line.

Artist: Q-Tip Album: Amplified Released: November 23, 1999 Label: Arista I have talked about A Tribe

Artist: Q-Tip

Album: Amplified

Released: November 23, 1999

Label: Arista

I have talked about A Tribe Called Quest Before, and this is a solo effort by one of the group’s three members. Q-Tip, Kamaal the Abstract, and sometimes referred to as simply “the abstract rapper” followed A Tribe Called Quest’s 1998 breakup with his debut album Amplified a year later. I use the album as my primary running music, but friends are skeptical as to that use. I like to groove with my music while running instead of using it to push me forward forcefully, but to each her own.

Amplified personifies Q-Tip’s laid back abstract style masterfully with its cavernous grooves and staccato beats. The first track “Wait Up” is aptly named, melding Q-Tip’s smooth flow with a faltering drums and jazz-reminiscent piano. “Higher” takes the groove deeper and shows the rapper’s skill in both abstract material and classic hip hop swagger. “Breathe and Stop” offers an even trippier and heavier beat, while “Moving With You” takes that confidence to the romantic level. “Let’s Ride” offers an extremely intelligent jazz guitar riff that underlies Q-Tip’s chill atmosphere and lives up to its name as a cruising song.

The well-travelled hit of the album is “Vivrant Thing,” and is a true and tested hip hop ode to one amazing woman. As a long time friend of A Tribe Called Quest and Native Tongues, Busta Rymes makes his appearance for “N.T.” a decidedly more intense song than the rest of the album. “End of Time (ft. Horn) uses a strange fusion beat that makes it very difficult to describe and closes out Amplified on a note of new things to come from Q-Tip. There’s also a hidden track, but I won’t spoil that surprise completely.

The combination of disjointed beats and the suave flow of Q-Tip are a perfect mix that was never captured on his two later albums, and although both are solid albums, neither one reached the level of Amplified. Whether he was still coming off his high with A Tribe Called Quest or just on his game, this is one album any Tribe fan should own.

Fiction…naw, not true.

…though Q-Tip’s Kamaal The Abstract was one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2001. It was never released. Word has it, that the label (which shall name unmentioned) figured that the album wasn’t commercial enough due to the theme of jazzy experimentation that is present throughout the album and was supposed to be shelved forever…but due to the overwhelming success of the The Renaissance, Kamaal The Abstract drops in September 15th, 2009 and was produced entirely by Q-Tip & J.

Here an article that appears in the Summer 2009 issue of “Talent” published by Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development.

Amplified and Misunderstood:
Positive Gifted Identity Development and the Role of Parents

Paula Wilkes, Ph.D. & Mark Szymanski Ph.D.

Positive gifted identity development is a dynamic process that is both nourished and diminished by interactions with family, peers, school, and culture. All of those interactions impact self-perception and ultimately the child’s identity. By understanding a gifted child’s innate personality traits, and by teaching them to use good habits of mind, parents can nurture a positive identity development process that can lead to the child becoming an emotionally healthy lifelong learner who is an information seeker, a problem solver, and a creative producer. These are all skills and dispositions our children will need to be successful in the 21st century.

CTD: Why have you chosen to focus on sensitivity, perfectionism, introversion/extroversion, and curiosity, the four amplified ways of being?

Gifted children often possess amplified ways of being that have the potential to impact both their work in school and sense of self. We focus on those amplified and innate ways of being because they are often misunderstood by others. From a very young age, many gifted children hear negative comments such as: “You’re too sensitive!” “Why are you so shy?” “Can’t you sit still for more than a minute?” “Don’t be such a perfectionist!” “Stop asking so many questions!” Those comments can inhibit the development of a positive gifted identity. Parents who do not understand their gifted child’s amplified ways of being may unknowingly respond in ways that have a negative impact on a child’s self-perception. Helping gifted kids understand, modulate, and make effective use of their amplified ways of being will enhance their academic growth and social development, and will become the foundation of a positive gifted identity. A positive gifted identity will increase the chances that existential depression and other emotional crises often faced by gifted children can be dealt with in a healthy manner.

CTD: Can you explain what you mean by sensitivity?

Many gifted children are highly sensitive and intense. That sensitivity may include a strong sense of justice as well as empathy for people and animals. Kazimierz Dabrowski outlined five specific areas in which a gifted child could exhibit “overexcitability” (what we are referring to as “amplified ways of being”) as a natural, organic trait of his or her giftedness.
o	Psychomotor –This includes a heightened surplus of physical energy or rapid speech and movement. It can often be misinterpreted as ADHD.
o	Sensual – What is “normal” to the average person can be seen or felt as an assault to the nervous system of a child with amplified senses. This can include amplified reactions to sights, sounds, smells, and touch (such as scratchy labels). On the other hand, children with amplified senses may be quite moved by sensual beauty.
o	Emotional – Some gifted children may be seen as “drama queens and kings” because of their amplified reactions to experiences that are either highly enjoyable or unpleasant. While often seen as over-reactions, these responses are often within the “normal” range for emotionally sensitive children.
o	Imaginational – Vivid imaginations taken to an extreme can cause these gifted kids to seem like perpetual daydreamers. At times they may seem like they have a hard time distinguishing between reality and fantasy.
o	Intellectual – Getting wound up about new ideas and experiences is a common amplification experienced by gifted children. They love to try new and exciting puzzles and challenges in their areas of expertise.

CTD: How might amplified introversion or extroversion be misunderstood by parents and teachers?

Gifted children frequently display amplified introversion or extroversion. In both cases, this way of being is their preferred way of processing information. Extroverts are energized when they are engaged with others. They process their ideas through interaction; as a result, they are often seen as too talkative and unable to wait their turn during a discussion. They may also be mislabeled as having ADHD. Introverts, on the other hand, are energized when they are alone. They process their ideas internally; as a result, they don’t have a great need to share their ideas with others. Gifted introverts may go unnoticed by teachers who see them as shy or slow thinking and withdrawn. Although most people are extroverts, the higher the IQ of a gifted child, the greater chance the child is an introvert.

CTD: What impact does perfectionism have on gifted development?

There are actually two different types of perfectionism, intrinsic and extrinsic. Gifted children are often cautioned about their perfectionism, however, intrinsic perfectionism is a positive trait when it challenges children to extend their understanding and skills. It is a negative trait when it interferes with the learning process, leads to debilitating procrastination, or results in social and emotional difficulties.

Extrinsic perfectionism is not an organic trait. It is inappropriately created and nourished by parents and teachers. Young gifted children are eager to please the adults in their lives. When they are praised for their perfect papers, praised for their large vocabularies, and praised for their ability to read chapter books at a young age, they believe that they are “worthy” when they are perfect and capable of doing extraordinary things. This can cause gifted kids to be embarrassed, angry, and/or fearful when they aren’t able to get 100% on a test or when they are faced with a challenge that doesn’t allow them to demonstrate perfection. Extrinsic perfectionism can be debilitating because it can put gifted kids in a box of competence that doesn’t allow them to take the risks necessary for healthy intellectual and emotional development.

CTD: If curiosity killed the cat, what does it do for gifted kids?

Curiosity helps gifted kids discover their passions and stumble upon new discoveries. This amplified way of being can manifest itself in a variety of ways including asking lots of questions and needing to touch and explore things of interest. While curiosity may have killed the cat, it gives life to the lives of gifted kids. This amplified desire to seek information should be nurtured by parents and teachers in order to support and encourage behaviors that lead to life-long learning.

CTD: What first steps can parents take to support the positive identity development of their gifted children?

Let your children know you love and understand them. Help them learn to modulate and make effective use of their amplified ways of being. Be an advocate! Share this information with other people. Gifted children deserve to be amplified AND understood.

We’ve had a go at streaming the plenary talks at the Institutional Web Management Workshops for the last 5 years now. Allowing people at home to watch the talks is all part of the amplified conference role that we see IWMW playing.

The AV unit and one camera at IWMW, by Mindfieldz

This year was no exception and the University of Essex did a stirling job of live streaming talks for us and hosting them on the University Web site.

They had 3 video cameras (with female camera people as Liz Azyan pointed out!) filming the main area and pushed out some really great quality content. We also pulled this content into Nevibes so we could offer it along with all the other IWMW2009 resources (like tweets, slides and live blogging using CoveritLive).

The University of Essex have now added some statistical data about the streaming viewers including a map of viewer location and a time graph of viewers. Numbers peaked at almost 60 viewers during the second morning plenaries.

Map of streaming video viewers

Twitter Comments on the Streaming

There were a lot of Twitter comments on the streaming which were on the whole really encouraging. They also helped us maintain good quality during the three days by pointing out problems such as the mikes being too loud.

The streaming that we currently provide is usually courtesy of our host institution so it can be difficult to offer different outputs and support all users (e.g. Linux users had a few problems). We are aware of these type of issues and do our best to offer as many solutions as are within our means.

What Next?

An archive of each of the plenary talks will be made available soon. Watch the main page video page on the IWMW 2009 Web site for updates.

so imma need for you to try this here new shit
you’ll remember everything, it won’t let you forget

We’ve been doing a lot of NYC coverage this summer, mostly because so many of us Quakers migrate to the big apple for our big fancy financial internships and whatnot. So for those of you spending your time in this gorgeous summer weather in the city, these posts will be of some use. And if you’re elsewhere (like in Jersey, yuck), then be jealous.

First things first. I went to All Points West last weekend located on Liberty State Park. I did a write-up for ABC’s Amplified, which you can read here. Here’s a preview–

The first thing anyone will remember about Friday at All Points West, the music festival located in the backyard of New York and New Jersey, is the mud. The afternoon rain soaked the festival grounds, and by night when the skies had cleared, the festival-goers’ constant churning of the ground turned the usually grassy fields of Liberty State Park into a swamp. The second thing anyone will remember about Friday is that despite mother nature’s bad mood, no one really seemed to care. The music went on as planned, and once everyone decided to embrace the weather, the festival hit its stride.

Obviously, I took bomb pics and wrote about some highlights including Jay-Z’s epic set. So check that out.

Also, I saw the Arctic Monkeys tear shit up on Monday. Guess who was in attendance? ….Seriously, guess– I’m not telling. I wrote about the show for Amplified. Here’s a little insert:

The band debuted a few tracks off their upcoming album, Humbug, but stuck mostly to fan favorites off their first two records. “Brianstorm,” the lead track from 2007’s Favourite Worst Nightmare was a highlight of the night as the band rocketed through heavy riffs at a relentless pace.

Read the rest of the post, check out some pics, and find out the answer to the mystery of who was at the concert!

In other news, Central Park this weekend will turn into a massive rave/disco party as our favorite skull-obsessed German DJ, Boys Noize, spins his hard hitting electro at the free concert series in the park. (I’m also using this post to see if anyone wants to come? Hit me up!) So much happening around NYC.

It’s August folks- the last month before school starts up again, and TrippingFranklins seizes the Quaker nation by its boots.
