Well I had a wonderful whirlwind trip to Sibu, Sarawak to attend the wedding of a very dear friend, JT. She & I were in boarding school together, yonks ago, and we’ve been friends since she was 13 and I was 14. She’s also the younger sister of Joshua’s Mom (JM), my BFF and mother of my ring-bearer Joshua, and god-daughter/flowergirl Olivia!  

It was so lovely catching up with my girls. I am convinced that sometimes you don’t really realise that you miss someone until you meet them again, and then you wonder how you could have ever let the years go by without maintaining contact. I got back in touch with Marilyn (aka “Blur Queen”) and Jonelle, the crown princess of sarcasm (but a real softy on the inside). I haven’t got all their photos in my camera since I was toting a Nikon SLR (not very elegant for an evening affair) so most of the shots were in Marilyn’s camera.

But I really wanted to highlight the skills of one lovely make up artist here in Singapore. Her name is Angel, and she does beautiful work. I allowed myself the luxury of having someone do my hair and makeup in my own home when I found out that I’d have absolutely no time to do either when I get to Sibu, and I had no time to go have both done in a salon somewhere because I needed to pack & my ride was coming, I had errands to run, etc. A very big bonus is that Angel’s charges are quite reasonable. She normally does make up for brides and packs a huge arsenal of tools to help transform you into a stunner, at least for one day.  

So here’s the “After” face:

Well to be honest, this is the “After” face about 10 hours AFTER Angel first did my face. That’s why there’s a bit of shine here & there and my lipgloss had worn off. She did my hair at 10am, I got into a cab at 12 noon, and reached the airport at 2.30pm, took a flight at 4.20pm, arrived in another country at 6.30pm, made a grand entrance at 7.30pm and took to the stage to sing for the bride & groom’s second grand entrance at 8.30pm! And through it all, the hair stayed, and makeup stayed, and most importantly, them fluttery eyelashes stayed! I think the use of the ampoule really helped to “set” my face so that it was dewy enough (but not greasy) for the makeup to glide on and stay put for literally HOURS!

At first I wasn’t sure whether the lashes made me look wide awake or, erm, perpetually shocked. They felt pretty heavy at first, but I got used to them pretty quickly. Looked like a mamasan at the airport so I had my sunnies on, but the lashes were so long they were pushing against the glass. I must’ve looked a sight. But by the end of the evening I was quite convinced I had to have them for my own wedding! 

My trusty DSLR makes everything look really sharp, but I suppose in the diffused glow of wedding photography, it will look much better.

I had a blast in Sibu and having someone come over to your home to do your face & hair all at once is such a load of stress off your back especially when you’re in a rush. Some women probably think it’s something just for brides to do, but I say go for it when you want to feel beautiful, special and lovely without having to worry about whether your liquid eyeliner’s straight. Consider it a pampering, much like a good facial or a mani/pedi session.

Definitely would be using her services again, perhaps for a special date night, or gala affair. Take a leaf from Bridezilla’s book; you don’t have to be a bride before you can feel pretty once in a while!
