The same thing happens to my blogs that happened to all my diaries I had as a child; I write in them

The same thing happens to my blogs that happened to all my diaries I had as a child; I write in them furiously for a couple days, weeks, maybe a couple months and then… nothing. I want to stop that! I have like 6 blogs around the internet that I write in on random occasions, but I never keep up with just one. I’m going to try and fix that.

So I’m now officially no longer a UBC student, and am now an alumni, and I can tell you right now that I don’t like it. I’m fighting tooth and nail to keep connected to UBC as much as I can! To the point where I spent my Saturday night on campus at the special extraordinary AMS meeting regarding all this Blake Frederick and Tim Chu hullabaloo.

I recall seeing somewhere once that there were Alumni seats on AMS council or in some committee or something. Is that true or did I make that up? If that’s the case, I want one of those seats. I’m so busy until Christmas, but once the new year comes I think I’ll take January off, and then in February I’ll send an email to the Alumni association and see how I can get further involved. I suppose I could get involved at Kwantlen, but it’s just not the same. As much as people complain about people being uninvolved at UBC, it’s a million times worse at Kwantlen.

UBC truly has been the love of my life, as incredibly nerdy as that sounds, and letting go is so hard. I get so sad most days that I don’t still live on campus. I wish there were more affordable on-campus living options ’cause I’d move there in a heart beat. And I check for new jobs that open up once a week.

I miss you, UBC. Please take me back.

I am jealous of Blake Federick. Why? Let’s see. I woke up today, packed my calculus textbook,

I am jealous of Blake Federick.

Why?
Let’s see. I woke up today, packed my calculus textbook, trekked to The Boulevard for some coffee, scheduled a IB Club meeting with Khalil, and decided to isolate myself for the rest of the day in Irving. Of course, like most UBC students, my final exams start in 10 days. Boring stuff.

But in the last 24 hours, Blake Federick has managed to embarrass UBC and the entire student body, abuse the power entrusted to him as AMS President, and work with Pivot Legal Society to submit a complain to the United Nations complaining that the Canadian and BC Governments have broken human right laws by overcharging student tuitions.
Seriously, what does he expect the UN to do?

Assistant: Commissioner Pillay!
Pillay: What is it, Jean?
Assistant: I have a letter for you, madam.
Pillay: Well, I’m a little busy at the moment. After all, I am the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Assistant: But it’s urgent.
Pillay: Can’t it go through the mail pile like all the—
Assistant: No, it can’t wait.
Pillay: Why?
Assistant: It’s from Canada.
Pillay: Close the door now.
Assistant: What do I tell the delegation from Haiti?
Pillay: I don’t know. Tell them we’re breaking for lunch. Just lock the door.
Assistant: Yes madam.
Pillay: *begins reading*
Assistant: What is it about?
Pillay: It’s about rising tuition at Canadian universities.
Assistant: No.
Pillay: It seems that students who pay some of the lowest tuition fees in the developed world will now have to pay significantly more.
Assistant: That’s horrendous and totally deserving of our attention!
Pillay: It’s a good thing this guy Frederick came to us.
Assistant: Why didn’t he contact us earlier?
Pillay: People act desperately during humanitarian crises.
Assistant: What are we going to do?
Pillay: You know that guy I was going to assign to our research group on development in Somalia?
Assistant: Roberto?
Pillay: I’m putting him on this.
Assistant: Good idea.
Pillay: And you know those funds that we were going to direct into the Rwanda group? Send them into Canada research.
Assistant: Yes, madam.
Pillay: *starts tearing up*
Assistant: What is it Commissioner Pillay?
Pillay: Oh, it’s this story they attached near the end about a poor boy named Tristan. Apparently, despite working part-time and receiving grants, he still accrued $42,000 in debt while completing his second bachelor’s degree at UBC.
Assistant: Those bastards.
Pillay: I can’t finish reading this.
Assistant: Commissioner Pillay?
Pillay: Yes Jean?
Assistant: I have a suggestion.
Pillay: What is it?
Assistant: We should send this to the Security Council.
Pillay: This is why I hired you, Jean.
Assistant: What kinds of sanctions should we propose.
Pillay: I don’t care. Sanction everything.
Assistant: Good idea, madam. This is Nobel Peace Prize material.
- Taken off the Terry Website

Of course, Blake Federick’s life has always been very interesting. From the disqualification last year, to his appeal, and re-election, to the whole UBC farm saga, underground bus loop joke, and now the United Nations. The AMS has scheduled an emergency meeting today at 5pm to discuss whether Blake Federick and Tim Chu, VP External should be impeach. Federick and Chu replied in a statement today that nether of them will be able to attend the hearing “due to prior commitments”

I can’t think of any prior commitments that can be more important than answering to your student body and clearing your name. Obviously, they are trying to buy time and I expect heads to roll by next week. Alex Monegro, who is the current IB Club President, should be given the job, if he still wants it, and would be my original choice for President if I was allowed to vote last year.

However, I am disappointed that two other executives Tom Dvorak and Johannes Rebane might be forced to resign as they might have co-signed the contract with Pivot. I believe that there has been a lot of political fighting and games in the AMS before this saga and Dvorak and Rebane might be the causalities of this war. I spoke to Rebane during Frosh and we talked about the health care system in Norway and the United States. He seems to be very intelligent, willing to listen to the opinions of others and take positive action on sketchy issues. I also know that he is the role model of many first year commerce students so many will be disappointed to see him go. However, regardless of what qualities Rebane might have, we might see a overhaul of the AMS executives this term.

Aside from all these drama, my finals are coming so I should probably be focusing on my calculus textbook that has been closed for a while. But if you are still clueless as to what is going on, the UBC Insider gives a pretty good overview on what is going on. Also, the Ubyssey will be covering the emergency meeting live from 4.30pm.

Who said UBC was boring?

Beloved reader, if you still have not heard the BOMB that just occurred today at UBC, please read: T

Beloved reader, if you still have not heard the BOMB that just occurred today at UBC, please read:

THE UBYSSEY, UBC INSIDERS, UBC SPECTATOR

I am just like you, beloved reader. I wake up in the morning, skip breakfast, buy food at the SUB, sleep in class, step on puddles all around campus… you know, the beauties of UBC life.

But BLAKE’S STUNT just crosses a line. THIS is a mockery of our institution. THIS is a mockery of our identities as UBC students. Our blog will not stand for it. I also thought Tristan Markle was long gone! He was handily defeated by Crystal Hon last January and yet we see him again, showing up in a picture all high and mighty (sarcastic). Markle was also crying about the debt he incurred in his undergraduate career – here are three points:

1) You EARNED money as a VP Admin (a position in which you did a terrible job, by the way).

2) You have shown us that FISCAL management and budgeting is SIGNIFICANT. Plan better.

3) You obviously have partied way too much with your fellow Knollies.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize what kind of implications Blake Frederick’s actions have cost UBC. FOXTROT will list 5:

1) The UBC Administration will no longer put up with these ridiculous stunts and will probably break off ties for the rest of the year. WHOEVER RUNS FOR PRESIDENT – DO NOT BE AS BAD AS BLAKE FREDERICK. He has done enough damage and the UBC Administration probably won’t listen to any legitimate student complaints anymore.

2) This is MORE negative publicity for UBC. It started with the Knoll in April 2008, got worse with the Translink joke a few weeks back, and now we’re stuck in the Vancouver Sun. How did it come to this? Is UBC suddenly the butt of all jokes? Is it that easy to run this fine institution into the ground?

3) This is further proof that ALEX MONEGRO should have won last election. UBC made a huge mistake in not electing him and the Appeals Committee made a huge mistake in not following through with the initial decision to disqualify Blake Frederick. 46 votes, UBC. 46 votes and none of these disasters could have happened.

4) It may be argued that IMPEACHMENT is of no use now, but it will set a terrible precedent for future presidents who feel that they may be able to get away with such terrible actions. Radically nutty presidents will start writing letters to Santa Claus demanding that coal be placed under the Chancellor’s Christmas Tree, or will complain to the UN again for the difference because professors don’t mark their midterms one class later.

5) It may be argued that IMPEACHMENT is too late because Blake is ending his term soon, but that just means we will be giving Frederick more space to operate. I don’t think he will be a “Lame Duck” leader – he has the OLYMPICS to finalize his already crazy agenda. With millions of eyes watching, watch Frederick screw things up even more by protesting and organizing chaos (paradox?) all over campus. Keep in mind that the UBC RINK is being used for the Olympics!

Amid the chaos that Blake Frederick has created, one thing has been lost in all this – the students’ knack for revenge in the polls. We got rid of Tristan Markle in the Crystal Hon-victory last year and we got rid of Ale Coates in the Tom Dvorak-victory as well. GEAR UP, UBC STUDENTS. WE PLAN ON TAKING BACK THE UNIVERSITY FROM THESE RADICAL KNOLLIES AND THEIR CRAZY DISREGARD FOR STUDENT INTERESTS.

WE, AT FOXTROT, WHOLLY BELIEVE THAT BLAKE FREDERICK MUST STEP DOWN AS PRESIDENT NOW. IF HE DOES NOT, WE DEMAND HIS IMPEACHMENT. WE ARE TIRED OF THESE RADICAL ACTIVITIES. HE HAS EMBARRASSED OUR UNIVERSITY AND HE HAS SHOCKED STUDENT POLITICS CAMPUS-WIDE.

The Elections Committee is coming together this week, as potential candidates and interested parties engage in a flurry of phone calls to coordinate who is running for what, and for how many jellybeans. We at the RBT are ready to report that, pending Council approval, Will Davis will be the new VFM coordinator.

Will served on Council from Spring 08 to Fall 09, and distinguished himself by being, statistically, one of the most amiable Councilors around the table, managing to vote with most everyone most of the time.

Surinam Airways (Paramaribo) will retire its only Boeing 747-300 on November 26. Ex-KLM 747-306 PZ-TCM (msn 23508) will not be replaced right away by new acquisition and ex-Air France Airbus A340-311 F-GLZG (msn 049). F-GLZG still needs approval for operations in Surinam.

I should have known better than to believe that I would have had time/energy to provide daily update

I should have known better than to believe that I would have had time/energy to provide daily updates on the conference while in the midst of all that was AMS Philadelphia 200[9].* In fact, three days after returning home, I’ve still got a pretty good conference hangover. So, for what it is worth, here are some highlights from my weekend at the conference of all conferences.

Friday

After filing my Day #1 Post, I made my way to “The Musical Aesthetics of Race and Ethnicity” panel sponsored by the Committee on Cultural Diversity (CCD). It was standing room only, but well worth it. Senior and junior scholars alike discussed a range of topics (which really deserve their own post) including, the ways race and ethnicity influence their own research and how the AMS has contributed to/hindered such considerations. I finally got to a seat halfway through Sindhu Revuluri’s remarks, which urged greater attendance to holes in the archive, those voices that remain silent in our work as a result of past imbalances. A constant concern of the CCD over the course of its 15-year existence has been the absence of diverse voices in AMS. While this has improved (some say more than others), the problem faced now is an embrace of that scholarship. Though few practical solutions were offered by the panel, the session revealed consideration of race and ethnicity as an intellectually stimulating one.

The rest of Friday was spent meeting with friends and colleagues, old and new. I echo Phil’s observation that it may be a sign of “getting older” that I don’t make it to more papers, I just didn’t think I’d hit this point only 8 years after my first meeting. I called it an early night (perhaps my first ever at AMS) in preparation for a long Saturday.

Saturday

I was in and out of meetings (first one at 7:30am) and coffees most of the day. I did, however, manage to make it to three papers: Albin Zak explored “Mitch the Goose Man” Miller’s contributions to the development of modern record production and problematized the fine line between gimmick and innovation.** John Howland connected Jay-Z to the shifting aesthetics and “browed” (low, middle, and high) conceptions of Symphonic Jazz through “six degrees of separation” and the most acrobatic handout I’ve ever seen. [Update: Phil Ford over at "Dial M" has posted a copy of said handout.] Stephen Thursby, who took his masters (an odd phrase, that one) at the University of Washington the same year as I, gave a source-rich presentation on stage designer and Secession artist Alfred Roller, whose sketches for a 1903 production of Tristan und Isolde contain intriguing musical notation.

Saturday night was, of course, the epic “Joint Alumni Reception and Gala AMS 75th Birthday Party.” Given the economic struggles of many academic programs as of late, a group party certainly presented a financially viable alternative to the traditional individual receptions. However, I found it next to impossible to find anyone. With the usual format, you knew you could generally find people at the party of their current program or alma mater. No such luck in a ballroom filled with 1000+. Apologies to many of the people I agreed to “meet up with at the party.” If anyone still needs a drink coupon, let me know.

Sunday

The highlight of Sunday was finally getting out of the hotel and seeing some of Philly. Further apologies to the owners of those papers that I should have attended, but didn’t. Thanks to a local friend, I got out to a great brunch and enjoyed the warm weather and fresh air of Rittenhouse Square. This same friend also happens to work for the Philadelphia Orchestra, so I got a personal tour of the dazzling Kimmell Center for the Performing Arts. Then it was off to the train station to catch Amtrak back to Boston.

All-in-all the meeting was a great success. Thank you to Bob Judd and the countless organizers (from program committee to tote bag stuffers) for all your work!

I’d say “see you next year in Indianapolis,” but the opportunity to stay connected in between conferences is one of the larger goals of this blog. Please let Drew and I know if you’d like to submit a post. We’re always happy to have outside contributions!

* Biggest typo of the conference award: The Tote Bags

** Best audio of the conference award: Frankie Laine’s “Cry of the Wild Goose”

con⋅fer⋅ence  [kon-fer-uhns, -fruhns] –noun 1. a meeting for consultation or discussion: a conferenc

con⋅fer⋅ence  [kon-fer-uhns, -fruhns]
–noun
1.	a meeting for consultation or discussion: a conference between a student and his adviser.
2. an event where like-minded people geek out over like-minded things. “I just got back from the AMS conference!”

okay, so i made up that last definition, but don’t you think that sums it up? AMS Philadelphia 2009 was great and just like any other academic conference, had its ups and downs. granted, the downs for me included getting lost, getting lost, getting lost, getting stuck in traffic, paying way too much money for tolls, driving for seven straight hours, getting lost and getting lost but the ups, both personal and professional overshadowed all of that.

(okay, maybe i still like the getting lost stories. they’re really rather funny.)

for the business side:
as per usual, i go to AMS to see other students, colleagues and professors, catch up and hopefully hear some interesting papers. saturday proved to be the best day all around: caught some really fascinating papers on Avant-Garde Diaspora, Luxe Pop and Pastiche and Neo-Classicism. saturday also happened to be the day where i saw the most people, had the best conversations and of course, attended the giant joint reception. (have to say, not a fan of the format and i’m sticking to that.) the big downside, however, to going to a four day conference is the toll it takes on your body and mind. as i sat diligently in the British Topics session, hearing about Constan Lambert and RVW, i found myself fighting to focus – and not because i wasn’t totally enthralled by the paper. my body had had it! which leads us to…

the personal side:
now last year at AMS in Nashville, i was the only Peabody student who attended. yeah, i had friends but it was a little lonely. it was nice this year to have other students and other Peabody professors there along with the slew of friends i’ve made over the years. went to some great dinners and lunches, saw Philly and enjoyed being in the company of other musicologists. if you’re interested in my thoughts in real time from the conference, check out my twitter feed at www.twitter.com/idmbassoon, for which, i’m sure, i’ve already gotten in trouble. (also do a search for #amsphilly2009 and see what other friends & musicologists were saying about the conference)

on the whole, the conference was great. sure, i went to some not-so-great papers but that’s to be expected. i learned enough but what i will take from it are the connections that have been made and cemented and the time spent.

oh yeah, and this:

(god, that will never stop being funny.)

problem to solve: dealing with space debris…. how to make it a non-issue, essentially. I have zero background on this, but I would imagine that, based on my security background, we’d want to deal for the worst case scenario. I imagine this to be a cloud of small sized debris since it would be hard to navigate through as well as destroy particular bits with a specific weapon. So, I guess the idea is a blanket force field that is a protective layer? Too bad I have no background in this; seems like a neat thing to think about.

Along these lines of things I have zero background in, but I find fascinating and know there are maths behind the ideas that people are using to solve these problems, I share this:

http://www.ams.org/bull/2009-46-01/S0273-0979-08-01232-9/home.html

It is on the mathematics behind invisibility and was published in AMS bulletin in 2008… long, dense, but good read. I don’t have the background to grasp all of it, but I was able to get some bits out and it was cool. So, if you have a decent college math background, go for it.

A quick run-down of yesterday’s events before running out the door to the first session:

The day began with a very pleasant train ride from Boston to Philly–kind of strange to pass through the center of Manhattan without even seeing it. A quick cab ride to the conference hotel and we’re off.

I always find that Thursday afternoon at AMS is a nice “calm before the storm.” So, I took the opportunity to sit in the lobby, catch up with old friends and colleagues, and book up my lunches and dinners for the remainder of the weekend.

As a result, I only made it to two papers: Dave Paul and John Z. McKay. Both were well delvired and received presentations (more on particular aspects of individual papers in a later post).

The best part of the day was definately the Amusicology reception. Thanks to all who came by! It was really great to see everyone, especially the bloggers: 2′23″, Zeitschichten, ThoughtLights, and one new one whose name escapes me in the pre-coffee phase of my day…I’ll add it when I remember it! We’ll do it again next year for sure.

See you round the conference!
