Homosexual men are up in arms at the stream of birdwatchers, tooled-up with ultra sensitive telescopes and binoculars, who are descending on the Nieuwe Meer area to peep at our now infamous Green Heron. De Gaykrant (a newspaper) complains that since our heron has chosen this spot, homosexual men are more likely to meet other men clad in anoraks and carrying bird books, rather than other homosexual men. Meanwhile, Amsterdam's prostitutes are planning to export their service to major German cities of Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin during the World Cup soccer tournament. Market forces are the name of this particular game, according to Metje Blaak of the tradespersons federation Guild of Prostitutes.

Our Green Heron hit the national news at the weekend, and hoards of twitchers from as far and wide as the United States of Belgium have decended on the animal. I feel sure that the non-birdy press coverage is not so much about the bird, as the behaviour of the twitchers themselves. Green Heron seems fine, she only gets worried when birds of prey circle above her. But this bird can hide underwater. Be prepared for snorkelling birders in the Nieuwe Meer…

A young, punky-looking female Green Heron has turned up in Netherland this weekend, the first ever seen naturally occurring in the country. This creature ain't supposed to be here, and the experts are not quite sure if indeed it is a Green. Anyway, this is a Big Deal Bird Event for those of a twitchy disposition. The "sub-adult" heron is to be found near De Kwak (a location not unconnected with the sound of another waterbird), Overtoomseveld, Amsterdam South.

Butorides virescens, as this rarest of visitors is called in Latin, should beware of Rita Furr-Donk, arch-vixen of the Butchers and Shopkeepers party VVD. She is also the Minister for Kicking Out All Foreigners. Butorides (who likely took a wrong turn and should probably be in the USA) would be advised to get a good lawyer. Especially as some of the local birders reckon the heron hitched a ride through Schiphol Airport…

As did loads of people flocking to sell much secondhand wares. Two signals that jollier days are ahead, that the gloom of That Unmentionable Season is now over, and that we can look forward to screaming bird above our heads in the Dutch capital. One birdwatching wag once asked "why do swifts fly half way around the earth to scream at each other??" Sometimes there's nothing like a good row to clear the air.

Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Peregrine of Hemweg Power Station, Amsterdam, on their firstborn! Those huge steam-belching chimneys in the west of Amsterdam, visible from all across the town, also house a nesting box for these high-speed winged raptors.

Peregrine falcons are the fastest birds, capable of some 314kph when diving on prey. Japanese motorcycle-maker Suzuki cashed in on this fact by naming its huge 1200cc model, capable of a top speed of 315kph, Hayabusa; Japanese for peregrine falcon.

Amsterdam birders are getting hot under their anoraked collars about the Golden Oriole this week. This funky yellow and black bird (the size of a thrush) is heading up to Europe from Africa and normally arrives in Greater Amsterdam around early May. One anorak thinks he's heard one and has posted it on the Interweb.

Other birders are Most Furious at such behaviour, as the poster has not seen — but only heard — the bird. The G.O. has a beautiful song which goes, the book says, "foh-fluo-fih-fioo". Unmistakeable really.

Very Early Swifts (apus apus) have this weekend been reported over the skies of Greater Amsterdam. On Saturday April 15, two of these birds were spotted over Muiden. Yes, Greater Amsterdam is indeed getting Greater by the day.

Is this a record? I hear you ask. Well, I am most pleased you inquired. On April 13, 1968 three Swifts were spotted by a group of four birdwatchers above Naardermeer. (Not a lot of people know that…) There is clearly a link between social unrest in France and the early arrival of swifts in Netherland.

This weird creature does really good impressions of other birds and even reindeer bells. The bluethroat "nests in tussocks" and hails from Africa and India. Maidens, cover thy tussocks…

Keep your eyes on the skies for the arrival of those other rowdy African tourists, the swifts. One swallow does not make a summer, but several thousand swifts sure do.
