Crank: High Voltage (2009)
★★ / ★★★★

At this point, I can enjoy just about any movie that Jason Statham stars in because even though most of them are mindless, they’re fun to watch. Statham is as charismatic as ever for his return as Chev Chelios, a hitman who gets caught up with gangsters who (literally) stole his heart. In order to survive, he must constantly charge his artificial heart which only lasts for about an hour. Half of the fun about this picture was the lead character trying to look for ways to charge his life force. The film is lewd, crude and downright crazy because even rubbing up against people could create enough electricity for him to survive. However, even I have to admit that I enjoyed this sequel less than the original for a few reasons. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the writers and directors, brought back certain characters from the original only to kill them off almost instantly. When a character did come back and survived, the character was not utilized in such a way that they could push the film forward. Therefore, there were many points in the film when it felt stuck even though the characters were kinetic in purpose and movement. I liked the campiness of the film but there were also times when it was too campy. In fact, there was a scene when it tried to summon Godzilla parodies. As adventurous as it was, it was dead on arrival for me because the violence that was being portrayed on screen was not funny, which was unlike the rest of the movie when everything else was cartoonish. In fact, that fighting sequence should have been quite epic, in my opinion, despite Johnny Vang (Art Hsu) being a simple-minded henchmen, because Statham’s character spent more than half of the film trying to chase him. Other actors that returned were Amy Smart as the girlfriend, Dwight Yoakam as Doc Miles, Efren Ramirez as Venus (who played Kaylo in the first), and Keone Young as Don Kim. I enjoyed this film’s enthusiasm to entertain but I ultimately have to give it a mediocre rating because it needed to have more focus instead of just aiming to be all over the place. Even though the first one was crazy, it tried to tell a story. On the other hand, “Crank: High Voltage” just felt like a series of random scenes pasted together which did not make sense as a whole.

CLICK FOR TRAILER

What?

Hitman Chev Chelios faces a Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered ticker that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep working.

Where?

At home.

With?

Myself.

Why?

I am 99% certain that when I saw this originally in the cinema, it was the best time I’ve had watching a new film. There were 2 groups of us and we lapped up every second of this absolutely insane movie,

Will it have the same impact second time around?

Worth It?

I enjoyed it still, it’s off the wall mental from start to finish, but it definitely lost something on second viewing.

I think the first viewing came with so many surprises and shocks with just how far the makers pushed the film into the realms of hyper-reality, one Godzilla inspired set piece in particular. On second viewing, I was expecting everything that was thrown at me and whilst still laughing my arse off, the jaw dropping aspect of the madness had died but then, that’s hardly the films fault.

In summary, still marvellous fun and a massive two fingers up to the movie studios who insist on neuturing our action heroes (’sup Die Hard 4.0) and stripping away every bit of testosterone to avoid any bit of offense. Crank: High Voltage goes out of its way to shock, offend, disgust and destroy, and it nails every one of them, and the world is a better place because of it.

7.5/10

Does it look like I got cunt written on my head? Who do you think you are fucking with?

– Chev Chelios

The high intensity action movie Crank was never my kind of movie. I am the big action anti-hero movie kind of guy. Directors Neveldine/Taylor has a reputation of having a buffed anti-hero kicking ass and taking names with jump cuts, thumping music and saturated lens. It feels like combination between Danny Boyle, Tony Scott and Renny Harlin. That may not end up as a good thing.

Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) is a contract killer for a Los Angles crime syndicate. He wakes up to find himself a groggy mess. There is a video playing of Ricky Verona (Jose Pablo Cantillo) drugging him with the “Beijing Cocktail” on Chev’s TV. Ricky’s motive for the injection is retribution for not killing Don Kim (Keone Young).

Little does Chev know is that the serum slows down his heart. He has one hour to live before the serum kills him. He calls Doc Miles (Dwight Yoakum). Doc informs Chev that he has to keep his heart pumping with adrenaline to stay alive by any means necessary from coke, tossing back Red Bulls, car chases, and nasal spray or fucking his brains out with his pothead girlfriend, Eve (Amy Smart).

He wants to seek revenge on Ricky. He enlists the help of his gay friend, Kaylo (Efren Ramirez) to get Chev closer to getting Ricky. Chev realizes that his boss Carlito (Carlos Sanz) is conspiring with Ricky for Chev not finishing the job.

As Chev stretches his limited time, Doc Miles tells him that he needs to find epinephrine. He tears Los Angeles apart to get the drug. He overdoses on the epinephrine and he has to burn it off.

From the get go, the movie is beyond reality with the ridiculous premise. I understand the movie is supposed to be frenetic and fast paced. Sometimes it could be too much. I believe that Neveldine/Taylor knows that the movie is ridiculous and treat it as much. There was the WTF sequel Crank: High Voltage that came out earlier this year, it makes the ending falls flat. Sorta speak.

Judgment: This is a fun movie that should not be taken seriously.

Rating: ***1/2

S’il me fallait résumer m

95/100

What a great movie!
Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Chris Klein, Chris Marquette and Anna Farris. I love Anna Farris and I really enjoyed Ryan Reynolds as the comedian.

I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in a long time.

Poor Ryan Reynolds, the guy tries so hard to impress a girl and everything keeps going wrong.

Chris Marquette did a hilarious job playing the bratty brother who constantly fights with Ryan.

In reality throughout the movie, he’s such a jerk and your kind of happy when the bad things happen to him.

But then you want him to wake up and smell the coffee and learn to be himself again.

The guy she really likes in the first place.

I’d have to say awesome directing, editing and dialog in the movie. The producer should make more funny comedies like this one, it was perfect!

Seventh Moon 2008

Director: Eduardo Sanchez

Writers: Eduardo Sanchez and Jamie Nash

Starring Amy Smart, Dennis Chan and Tim Chiou

Blair Witch Project. This gets varied reactions from people, some think it is one of the greatest horror films, while others believe it is one of the most overrated piece of fluffed up horror films ever made/ I definitely fall in the latter. Eduardo Sanchez, one of the co directors of the BWP and that film is Seventh Moon. I was hoping he was on the upswing after the pleasant surprise, but Seventh Moon is another failed disappointment just like BWP. IT has another limited cast and some very confusing and poorly lit camera work. The only good thing I can say about the film is that I always enjoy seeing Amy Smart in a film, and she is the shining moment of this film. This film was just poorly executed and not fun at all to sit through. It is like watching someone else play a first person shooter video game like Doom. It actually made me kind of nauseous.

The plot basics are this, Melissa (Smart) and Yul (Chiou) are newlyweds having their honeymoon in China and they are on their way to meet Yul’s family and they have a cabbie, Ping (Chan) driving them through the countryside. Ping gets lost and stops at a village to ask directions but after an hour or so he never returns so they go to search for him and they cannot find him and discover a man who looks half dead and then a group of creatures chase them and they then run back into the car and tries to get away. Soon they discover that there is a Hungry Ghost festival and the festival is all too real as the villagers leave sacrifices to appease the ghosts. Soon they discover it is real and are being chased by the hungry and angry ghosts and it is now a race for survival for the 2 newlyweds.

This film was really an exercise in futility. Sanchez direction is pretty much letter for letter the same as in BWP and it doesn’t work for this film either. Most of the time it is so dark you cannot tell what the hell is going on, and the jarring hand held camera techniques just make trying to pay attention to the story almost impossible. The script is not much better, Melissa is really the only fully fleshed out character. Yul is just a badly drawn caricature of a stupid young man that makes all the stupid decisions. Ping is basically just the device that gets the story going and is also used as the exposition. Smart is really the only bright point in the cast, she carries her role well, but it just is not enough to make this a fond viewing experience. Chan and Chiou are serviceable at best and at other times down right frustratingly annoying. The SFX is not that great either, but that is mainly due to the blurring camera work in the film that never lets you get any good views of the creatures. It seems like Sanchez suffers the Star Trek movie curse, where only the even numbered films of his are good, so I am hoping his next film is not such a pain to suffer through.

This one gets 2 out of 5

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…

Game Over

I quite enjoyed ‘Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Altered’ so I was really looking

I quite enjoyed ‘Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Altered’ so I was really looking forward to checking out Sánchez’s newest project, ‘Seventh Moon’. Add an intriguing story and a likeable cast and you have a recipe for success. Unfortunatley, Sánchez left some ingredients out of the mix and left my meal tasting a bit on the bland side.

According to an ancient Chinese myth on the full moon of the seventh lunar month the gates of hell open and the dead are freed to roam among the living. While honeymooning in China, a young couple takes part in a sacred event that honors these spirits. As night falls, their tour guide abandons them in a desolate field. Now what they thought was a joke is becoming far too real as they fight to survive the night of the SEVENTH MOON.

Interesting story right? The brief little snapshots of the couple at the event worked well in setting up the action. They’re having a good time, drinking, laughing, shopping, but inspire weary and annoyed glances from the locals, who take the event, and their rituals seriously. Yul and Melissa have come to China to celebrate their honeymoon, and to introduce Melissa to Yul’s family. Liquored up, the couple meet up with their guide, who is to drive them to Yul’s family home. It doesn’t take Yul long to pass out in the back seat with his head in Melissa’s lap. Melissa and their guide engage in brief conversations as she drifts in and out. The guide parks the car claiming he is lost, and walks off, leaving the two in the car.

This is where the action picks up. It’s night, and they are in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country. There are only a few scattered rundown homes with boarded up windows. Surrounding them, is tall growth and trees, a perfect place for scary things to hide. The film is big on atmosphere and does create a nice backdrop to the story. There are a few decent moments of suspense, and a couple nicely executed scenes, but it felt a bit too familiar. The creatures were a little uninspired and the “hunt” didn’t offer anything new. Effects are minimal and there is no gore. If that’s your game, then I definitely wouldn’t bother with this one. It had it’s moments but when it was over it left me thinking, “Meh, who cares?” ‘Seventh Moon’ is okay so I’m just going to pass it. I doubt it will make the earth move under anyone’s feet though.

Dungeon Rating: 2.5/5

Directed By: Eduardo Sánchez

Starring: Tim Chiou, Amy Smart, Dennis Chan

Betyg: 3

Every man reading this (I suppose that’s just about every man in North America) and every woma

Every man reading this (I suppose that’s just about every man in North America) and every woman who has seen the 2005 RomCom (short for romantic comedy) “Just Friends” knows what I’m talking about when I say that I hate “the friend zone”. Every male teen has thought to himself at least once, Damn, I’m slipping into her friend zone. This is a scary realization, too. The friend zone is similar to volcanoes in that if you get too close to it, you’re done; if you’re good friends with a cute girl, hoping that she will soon see you as something more, make damn sure she doesn’t want you to go shopping with her, feed her sensitive side or ask for your opinion on anyone else’s clothing choices. These are all red flags that you, my friend, are slipping into the friend zone.

As evidenced by his man boobs, this dude is all up in the friend zone.

I’d like to ask everyone to observe a moment of silence as we drink in the amazing beauty that is Amy Smart (right).

I suppose that’s done, now. So, being in the friend zone must be the worst thing ever, right? Actually, although being in the friend zone is awful there is one girl-related issue that is worse, far worse. The horrid situation that is worse than being Ryan Reynolds (that’s a sentence beginning I never thought I’d write) is when you have a girlfriend and realize that in order to keep her happy, you have to take on the role of girlfriend.

The reason this is so awful is two-fold. First, it should be pretty clear that we are not equipped for this job. I have my sensitive side just like every other guy, but that just means that I cry at the end of Rocky III and Rudy. We aren’t going to fall apart watching The Notebook or when the family hamster dies. Second, it hurts. It just hurts. We want to protect you from the big, bad things in the world and we want to have you to ourselves on occasion. One thing we don’t want is to feel like your happiness hinges upon our willingness to sacrifice our Y-chromosome — we love that chromosome; it’s our favorite one, always has been.

So girls, it is your responsibility to your man and to your relationship to bring out his masculine side. Sure, you can try to coax out some sensitivity and compassion from time to time, that’s healthy. But it’s healthy in the way that lemon grass shots are healthy (one a week or month) not in the way that carbohydrates are healthy (hundreds a day). Assuming our roles in the relationship is one of the most important features of a lasting relationship.

<img class="size-full wp-image-145" title="RayDeb" src="http://patrickstpierre.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/raydeb.jpg" alt="Raymond and Deborah.
Chevy: There is one I never got to, on account of I could never find him. The one who calls himself, “The Ferret”.
Venus: El Huron…
Chevy: You know him?
Venus: No, it means the ferret in Spanish.
Chevy: Right…I knew that.

Somehow Chevy Chelios (Statham) survived his ordeal at the end of the first Crank movie, but now his “super heart” has been removed and replaced with an artificial heart that will only be kept beating if he constantly provides it with electricity. Can he find those who are out to kill him before his heart ultimately gives out? And does anybody care…?

There’s a well known saying about curiosity and what troubles it can lead to, and my experience with this movie once again proved that saying as valid. I was curious as to how a sequel could possibly be made after Mr. Chelios fell thousands of feet from a helicopter onto a car. How could he possibly survive that, I wondered. Well…they don’t really explain how he survived that, so I’m left to assume that he’s just one of the first signs of the genetic mutations seen in the X-Men movies. Seems like the only reasonable explanation to me.

As for the movie, I hated it. Whatever trace amounts of charm and wit the first one had seem to have been removed along with Chevy’s heart. We’re left with a movie that surpasses the original in its violence, tastelessness, offensiveness, and exploitation. At some point I just stopped watching and started staring at the wall or reading internet articles while I waited for the movie to end. For a relatively short movie, it seemed awfully long.

This movie is just disgusting and useless and I suggest nobody bothers seeing it. And that’s about all I have to say about that…

Don’t watch another Crank movie. (yes, they left it open for another sequel)

10 – 6.8 because it’s disgusting and offensive and stupid and not funny or interesting = 3.2

I am pretty sure that I am beginning to enjoy Jason Statham movies. Today “Crank: High Voltag

I am pretty sure that I am beginning to enjoy Jason Statham movies. Today “Crank: High Voltage” arrived in the mail from Netflix and it was not the worst.

“Crank: High Voltage” follows Chev Chelios through another action packed, DIY’d rollercoaster ride. The lines aren’t all that smart, and the plot is laughable at best. But the stunts that Statham performs, and the quick-cut film style make the movie entertaining.

I sorta felt like I was watching the first “Crank”, however the sequel is slower and a little more put together. It’s funny, but the characters actually needed this sequel to fully develop. I felt like I finally understood how the organized crime rings worked. I also was less annoyed with Statham because I was used to his behavior.

I am sure that the budget was much bigger for this film. There was even a scene that reminded me of the big monster battle scenes in Power Rangers.

As always, Statham defied biology and lived through an entire movie of life threatening events. But that’s the point right? We aren’t supposed to believe that anything he does is actually possible, we are simply supposed to enjoy the show.

Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Jose Pablo Cantillo

Doc: Any pain in your chest?
Chev: Not really. I’m feeling pretty good right now.
Doc: What are you doing?
Chev: Driving through a mall…cops are chasing me.

A professional hitman, Chev Chelios (Statham), wakes up to discover that he’s been given a poison that is only slowed down by shots of adrenaline. In order to keep himself alive long enough to hunt down the people that did this, he must constantly keep on the move and stimulated.

I’m going to assume that the tag line for this movie was “It’s like Speed…on a person!” That’s pretty much what this movie is, though it’s not quite as interesting, yet much more ridiculous. It manages to be fairly entertaining, though there’s a high number of “oh come on” moments. Plus, the editing is so amazingly hyperkinetic, I felt like I needed to watch a Michael Bay movie afterward just to wind down.

Oh, and don’t get me started about the ending. I notice there’s a sequel to this…I’m not sure I even want to know how they pull that off.

Jason Statham plays his role well, which I guess is why he plays the same role in almost every movie. He adds nice touches of humor to what is really just a mindless, video game of a movie. Amy Smart is cute, but just there to add to some of the silly male fantasy scenes.

It’s short, loud, silly, really violent, somewhat funny, and mostly implausible. If that all sounds appealing to you, by all means, watch away.

It’s really REALLY easy to avoid the California police.

10 – 1.5 for the headache inducing editing – 2 because overall it’s just kind of stupid and implausible – 7 because the very ending is just dumb = 5.8

Grinding on some Rogues, and Assassins, because as a Paladin it’s my job they be brought to justice.

Then out of nowhere a Death Knight rides by. He stops. He watches me for a few seconds. I find it a little…wierd. So I bow. Then he goes, “Do you want a run through ZF” .. I reply, “Sure thing” So were running through ZF, he asks me some questions, how do I like the pally class…so on and so forth. Then he asks the question….”Are you really a girl?” Well were half way through ZF, and damn it I want the XP. So I go….”Yes.” He goes, “Cool” We chat a little more. Then he goes, “How did you get the heirloom gear, you got a main.?” I go, “No, this is my BF account, he gave me this pally to play around with, and he got me the gear.” Then his reply to that, “Oh”

We finish the run in almost complete silence after that, after it was done I thanked him. We parted ways.

So I lied a bit to get what I want, I feel dirty like a little whore, then again it felt kind of good.

The wierdest thing is sometimes when I’m grinding, dudes stop by and look at me grinding. Just looking then finally leave. Kind of disconcerting, what’s going on in their heads. Oh well.

The pic for this post is Amy Smart, she is definately a female. She was in movies such as Road Trip, and Crash. I most definately think she is HOT!
