<p>I may have said this before but I REALLY like the An-2. The &#8216;Anushka&#8217; is big, bold and burly&#8230;.and makes a statement on the flightline. Thanks to the German Air Force, who declined this PZL-built former LSK (Luftstreitkrafte) East German machine (LSK-440), it came onto the open market. Here seen in the markings of &#8216;Aero Troika&#8217; on the flightline at GVFWE Abingdon, it is now operated by Flight Training Cologne, and gives pleasure flights, mostly operating out of its home base. This An-2T (nicknamed &#8216;Anna&#8217;) was not built &#8211; at Mielec in Poland &#8211;  to any agreed international civilian standard, so the CAA would have a problem with allowing that kind of operation in the UK.</p>
<p>I went inside this aircraft and found it typical of the breed. The cockpit had an almost &#8216;agricultural&#8217; feel to it; almost like a flying tractor &#8211; and about as tough, too! Difficult to think of this as being in any way belligerent, but, during the Vietnamese War, some North Vietnamese An-2s were fitted with two torpedoes slung underneath their wing, in an attempt to attack South Vietnamese coastal shipping. One of these North Vietnamese An-2s was shot down by an F-4 Phantom, under the control of USS Long Beach!</p>

<p>Here is another example of that wonderful beast, the Antonov An-2 (NATO reporting name, &#8216;Colt&#8217;). This one is carrying an Hungarian registration, HA-MKF, and was, like the vast majority of the survivors, built by PZL at Mielec in Poland (over 12,000 were built there). From the first flight on the 31st August 1947, it was clear that the &#8216;Annushka&#8217; was a winner. China also built this type as the Shijiazhuang Y-5, and it remains in service.</p></div>
<div class="mceTemp">It is powered by a 9-cylinder radial engine, a Shevtsov ASh-62, of 1,000hp. In case you think that the An-2 sounds a little familiar when it bellows at you as it takes off&#8230;..well, you would be a quarter right, if you like B-17s, that is. You see, Soviet Russia purchased a licence to build the Wright R-1820 engine, and used it (as the M-25) in the Polikarpov I-16 fighter and other Second World War aircraft such as the Li-2, the Russian equivalent of the DC-3, and a later version of this engine (the ASh-62) was used in the An-2.  So, in effect,  you are listening to one-quarter of a B-17 (or a half of a DC-3) on take-off!</div>
<div class="mceTemp">This aircraft is based at Popham Airfield, in Hampshire (ICAO code EGHP), which might seem a bit small for such an aircraft, but when you consider a take off run of about 200 yards, and a landing distance of about 250 yards, it is quite acceptable.</div>

<p>Sometimes the line-up for departure at the end of each day of a Great Vintage Flying Weekend can get rather interesting. Here we can see Air Unique&#8217;s An-2 &#8216;Baltic Bear&#8217;, in front of Air Atlantique&#8217;s Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer in Empire Test Pilots&#8217; School livery getting ready for departure from Hullavington, Wiltshire. The De Havilland DeH 85 Leopard Moth in the background belongs to Mr and Mrs Gammons, and is kept in beautiful working order. It was built in 1934, and its Gipsy Major 1c has kept it flying for more than 3,300 hours, a distance in excess of 400,000 miles &#8211; or 15 times around the Earth!</p></div>

<p>This was the scene at GVFWE Hullavington, shortly before a burst of heavy rain moved through. As you can see, we are in the midst of setting-up the &#8216;heavy&#8217; piston-engined aircraft park, and a number of crew are pitching tents. In the line, you can see an Antonov An-2, Douglas DC-3 (with radar), Percival Pembroke, Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer, a very interesting mix. All I can say is that the cost of insuring an outdoor event against adverse weather is so high as to make it prohibitive to do so (it would cost you around 30% of your gate monies, thereby more than wiping out any profit margin!)</p>
<p>As an interesting note, the DC-3, G-ANAF, was used to test the Thales Searchwater 2000MR radar, as fitted to the RAF&#8217;s Nimrod MR.4A aircraft. With the reduction in the number of Nimrods in that order, several of the already-built specialist radars are surplus to requirements.</p>

<p> Don&#8217;t you just LOVE biplanes? They don&#8217;t come much bigger and more bearish than Air Unique&#8217;s Lithuanian registered Antonov An-2, &#8216;The Baltic Bear&#8217;. This gorgeous piece of aviation retro-design was first flown as a prototype AFTER WW2, despite the biplane configuration. The &#8216;Anushka&#8217; has been used for para-dropping, crop-spraying, metereological research, &#8216;feeder liner&#8217;, mineral prospecting and almost everything else. This particular example has a most luxurious executive interior. As you can see, sometimes the Commentary Box is the best place for photography, too!</p></div>

Zaparkowany nieco z dala od głównego terminalu Antonow An-2 powoli uruchamia silniki. Na pokładzie pilot kolejny raz wyrusza na wyprawę &#8211; tym razem nie dookoła świata, nie na Fair Isle w Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie i tak nie doleciał z powodu lenistwa, lecz tam, gdzie mu <a href="http://www.fallingrain.com/icao/EPGD.html">fallingrain.com</a> pokaże w miarę uczęszczane następne lotnisko. Pierwszy cel &#8211; Kaliningrad.</p>
<p>Komputer wyznaczył trasę w najprostszy możliwy sposób &#8211; prosto z lotniska do lotniska. Przewidywany czas lotu &#8211; 27 minut. Faktycznie, pilot spodziewał się, że doleci w około 45. W końcu stary dobry Antek to dość paliwożerna machina, a przy niższych prędkościach też świetnie sobie radzi, a mniej kosztownego płynu pochłania&#8230;</p>
<p>Start był kompletnie zwyczajny &#8211; tak, jak to tylko było możliwe. Podczas przelotu nad Sopotem zaczęło delikatnie bujać. Ot, wiatr, pomyślał sobie. Po chwili bujanie uspokoiło się. Przez następne kilkanaście minut mógł podziwiać widoki, obserwując wschodzące słońce, zerkając na prawo w kierunku swojego rodzinnego miasta, patrząc, jak przed nim w odległości kilku kilometrów przelatuje dyspozycyjny odrzutowiec Learjet, lecący do Gdańska ze Sztokholmu. Spokój, jakiego tylko można pozazdrościć.</p>
<p>Wysokość lotu tymczasem zwiększała się. 2000 stóp, 4000, 6000, coraz bliżej 8000. W radiu słychać było, że ATR 42 LOT-u z Warszawy po raz trzeci podchodzi do lądowania w Gdańsku. Po chwili kontroler z Warszawy odezwał się do pilota, informując go, że ma zmienić częstotliwość, by odtąd komunikować się  z centrum w Kaliningradzie. Krótkie zgłoszenie po angielsku do kolejnego kontrolera i dalszy spokój.</p>
<p>Coraz bliżej było do Bałtijska, już niemalże było widać jego budynki. Nagle zewsząd zaczęły formować się chmury. Nie minęło kilka minut, a widoczność spadła do mniej więcej 2-3 km. Skończyło się obejmowanie wzrokiem całego Obwodu Kaliningradzkiego. Pojawił się też wiatr &#8211; silny, boczny wiatr od południa. W bardzo szybkim tempie wiatr wzmagał się, coraz trudniej było utrzymać prosty kurs. Tor lotu walczącego z wichrem dwupłatowca coraz bardziej przypominał ślad przemieszczania się człowieka po długiej wizycie w pubie. Tu huragan, tam huragan, tu latarnia&#8230;</p>
<p>Pilot obserwował przyrządy. GPS podawał inny kierunek niż kompas, wskaźnik wysokości mimo zmniejszenia mocy silników do 45% nie drgał. W pewnym momencie spojrzał na wskaźnik poziomu paliwa i zamarł. Lewy zbiornik był opróźniony dopiero w dziesięciu procentach, prawy w dziewięćdziesięciu pięciu. Nagle wszystko się wyjaśniło &#8211; to nie wiatr, tylko jakieś problemy z paliwem zakłóciły balans. Przełączył kontrolkę na pobieranie paliwa jedynie z lewego zbiornika. Mimo tego, stan paliwa w prawym nadal spadał. Wyciek.</p>
<p>Do lotniska, na szczęście, było coraz bliżej. Paliwa i tak by nie zabrakło, ale utrzymywanie prostego kursu w sytuacji, gdy lewa strona jest dużo cięższa, jest skomplikowanym zadaniem. Wysokościomierz nareszcie zaczął wskazywać, że samolot powoli obniżał wysokość. Pojawił się jednak kolejny problem &#8211; GPS pokazywał, że lotnisko jest coraz bliżej, a nie widać go było nigdzie w pobliżu. Parę minut zerkania w prawo i w lewo, jednocześnie cały czas korygując kurs, w końcu zaskutkowało odnalezieniem świateł podejścia. Oczywiście, był za wysoko, ale w tym Antku nie jest to szczególnie duży problem. </p>
<p>Samo lądowanie było dość efektowne. Samolot spokojnie musnął kołami o pas, po chwili tylne koło zaczęło się obniżać, i nagle&#8230; znalazł się poza pasem. Drobny błąd pilota podczas korygowania kursu gdzieś nad Zatoką Gdańską zaskutkował złym ustawieniem klap. Na szczęście, hamulce działały. Podkołował do swojego miejsca na płycie, stając tuż obok całkiem sporego samolotu pasażerskiego produkcji sowieckiej lub rosyjskiej. Wiedział już, że w Kaliningradzie spędzi nieco więcej, niż planowane kilka godzin&#8230;</p>
