Tout d’abord : where are all the guitars gone ?

a

a

a

a

a

a

Photo : D.R.

J’ai d’abord profondément et tristement détesté In This Light And On This Evening.

Entre The Back Room et An End Has a Start, l’anxiété avait majoritairement laissé place à la tristesse. Avec In This Light, la direction que prend le groupe, c’est la danse apocalyptique.

a

a

a

a

An unwanted sun pulls rank in the sky

(Un soleil non désiré bouscule le ciel)

The boxer isn’t finished, he’s not ready to die

I’m attracted to the light, I’m attracted to the heat

(La lumière m’attire, la chaleur m’attire)

It’s a violent night, there are boxers in the street.

Over the past five years or so, the main alternative rock bands that have been primarily spotlighted

Over the past five years or so, the main alternative rock bands that have been primarily spotlighted in England have been, the Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, and recently bands such as Razorlight and the Kings of Leon. However, flying under all of the radar, there is yet another great force; Editors. If any of you have an iTunes account, about three years ago you were able to download the free single “Munich”. This song is great. Tom Smith (lead vocals) in very reminiscent of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, and their music is guitar heavy, with the often incorporation of piano and synthesizers.

Two albums in and these guys have been hiding in the shadows of the Arctic Monkeys, now, don’t get my wrong; I love the Arctic Monkeys, but I think Editors deserve a lot more attention, especially if you are a big Coldplay fan for instance. The Arctic Monkeys are quick, fast-paced and to the point, whilst Editors bring a more intimate and developed sound. Each of their two albums have seen changes in sound, with their second effort “An End Has A Start” sounding much more rounded, as it has a lot of slower, high climaxed songs. The album also went number one on the U.K. charts too.

Editors

“The Back Room” their first album saw a raw, guitar driven sound that is very similar to the sound of Interpol, if you are an Interpol fan, you will like Editors for sure! These guys really know how to perform, and they are good live as well. They have a great presence and Tom Smith carries a great voice in all his performances.

I would really look out for Editors in the near future. Their third album is in the recording process and we should see it by the end of 2009, hopefully sometime near the early summer. With time under the radar, I feel that Editors are ready to strike and take over the U.K. with their musical dominance.

The Back Room, llamado ‘Camera‘.

In music news this week, British indie quartet Editors have just dropped their third LP, In This Light and on This Evening. Over the years, the band has continuously drawn criticism for being too similar to seminal post-punk outfit Joy Division. Well, on this album they’ve tackled these criticisms head on, and turned down the road that so many indie bands seem to go down- by ditching the rock and turning electro. But why is it that bands feel they must give up playing real instruments and experiment so early on? And is it a career-ender, or can it be a positive thing? This post looks at some case studies, both good and bad, to find out…

In theory, bands progressing and experimenting with their sound is a good thing. Looking at an artist’s back catalogue and realising that it’s difficult to differentiate between each album is pretty much a cardinal sin. But it remains to be seen whether all these indie-rock bands are branching out to electronic instruments because it’s a natural career path, or if they are simply experimenting for the sake of experimenting. First up, it’s necessary to look at one of the most lauded bands in recent history: Radiohead.

Case Study 1

Band: Radiohead

Album: Kid A

Number: 4

Released: October 2000

Verdict: Success, of course.

To say that this trend began with Radiohead’s fourth LP at the turn of the millenium would be naive, but it can’t be denied that they helped it push it along a little bit. After the release of OK Computer, still one of the greatest rock albums of the 1990’s, the music world was waiting with baited breath for the follow up. But Radiohead did what Radiohead do best, and surprised everyone by releasing a sparse electronic album entirely different from its predecessor. The opening chords on Everything in its Right Place paved the way for an album that was imaginative, eccentric and sometimes just downright strange. Initially it divided fans and critics, but despite the original disagreement it still stands as one of the greatest albums of the decade. Just a few months later the band surprised everyone again by releasing another album titled Amnesiac, proving that it wasn’t just a once off move. And Radiohead have just kept getting better since.

Case Study 2

Band: Bloc Party

Album: Intimacy

Number: 3

Released: August 2008

Verdict: Questionable

When Bloc Party released their debut LP Silent Alarm in 2004, indie kids everywhere rejoiced at a frenetic, rhythmic and dark but somehow incredibly danceable album. Many critics praised it as proof of just how good British bands can be, and it ended up winning a number of awards. Their second album though didn’t quite stack up to everyone’s expectations, and by the third album Intimacy rolled along, they had ditched their finely-tuned brand of indie-rock completely, and replaced it with a more electronic, dance sound. While Intimacy is possibly their strongest album lyrically, and that central-theme of loss running through the album certainly gives it coherence, there just seemed to be something missing. The urgency of the first album just wasn’t there. Whether Bloc Party return to their roots or continue with this genre remains to be seen.

Case Study 3

Artist: Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Album: It’s Blitz

Number: 3

Released: April 2009

Verdict: A success, mostly.

They say everything that is old is new again. And with the amount of bands at the moment harking back to the dance-synth days of the 80’s, that adage has never been more true. The YYYs third album saw a complete turn around from their raw, garage rock origins. Full of danceable beats, synths and more electronica than you can poke a stick at, the album divided fans but mostly pleased critics, and gained a lot more mainstream airplay. If you consider It’s Blitz as an album on its own without considering the YYY’s history, it’s pretty damn good. But it’s just missing that edge that was so wonderful in their first couple of releases. Then again, Karen O can really do no wrong in my books.

Case Study 4

Band: Editors

Album: In This Light and on This Evening

Number: 3

Released: October 2009

Verdict: Unfortunate

Poor Editors. Right from the beginning they’ve been slammed as being a carbon copy of Joy Division. And with the moody, atmospheric themes and lead singer Tom Smith’s deep voice, it’s definitely understandable. But if you judge their first album The Back Room purely on its music and forget about it’s influences, it’s actually a really good indie-rock album. While the second LP An End has a Start faltered a bit in its haste to please the commercial masses, the stadium-sized rock suited the band well. But this third album sounds like it’s come straight out of a bad 80’s disco. First single Papillon has so much synth it could be mistaken for Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams are Made of These. An even bigger shame though is that there’s actually some decent tracks on the album. The title-track opener, with Smith’s baritone vocals, is gorgeous. But it just seem like they tried too hard in their transition to electronica. If you can get your hands on bonus EP Cuttings II, it’s much rawer, and much more rewarding.

–

Certainly, only four bands moving into the realms of electronic/dance music in their sophomore releases- even if it’s not a third (or fourth) album- doesn’t necessarily prove the theory. But it doesn’t take much looking to see that there’s plenty more. Is it just because music is inherently cyclical and we’re all going back to the 80’s? Or is this truly a natural progression? Radiohead amongst others have proved that when you can do it right, the results can be very, very rewarding. But it’s the dozens of copy-cat bands doing the same thing just because it’s the ‘in-thing’ that is disappointing. Hopefully Editors can regain some of their credibility with their next release. Or maybe they’ll surprise everyone and actually do something original. Like a hip-hop album. Now wouldn’t that be interesting!

When I first read that Editors were leaving their traditional sound, scrapping their guitars and changing their sound to electronic I was blatantly shocked. However, I felt optimistic in the sense that another album with the same sounding guitar riffs from Chris Urbanowicz would truly ware off on me.

My fascination with Editors began when I received Munich off of iTunes as a free single of the week. At first, I didn’t bother listening to it, but on a summer day I played it non-stop. It made me want more and more, and at that point the band was already on their second record ‘An End Has A Start’. After getting my hands on both albums I knew that this band stood out to me.

Editors

I’ve always had a knack for getting into bands primarily from the U.K. and Editors are no different. Despite their comparisons to Interpol, The Chameleons, Echo and The Bunnymen, and most importantly, Joy Divison, I never took that away from the music Editors gave.

Their first two albums were guitar driven. Enough said. Ghostly in some to rigorous and driving in others. Editors debut was ‘The Back Room’ and of course, being British, they gained success. The songs on this record such as ‘Munich’, ‘Bullets’, and ‘Blood’ are all great songs which bring out instant fan favorites and hits, however there are song such as ‘Open Your Arms’ which build up so climactically that the payoff is sweet. And not to mention the onslaught on b-sides this album had just made the listening experience even better.

With a successful debut, Editors were destined for fans and great music. It only took two years for the quartet to release their follow up, ‘An End Has A Start’. This album was much more of the same from their debut. There were differences though, as piano was used in songs such as the powerful ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ and ‘The Racing Rats’. ‘When Anger Shows’ and ‘Push Your Head Towards The Air’ are songs that climactically build up and have great payoffs. The b-sides on this record were a little disappointing but that added to how much one can appreciate songs like ‘Well Worn Hand’ which was recorded in one take with guitar, vocals and piano.

Guitar was the key to Editors success as their sound was distinguishable from the rest. However, their trademark, apart from singer Tom Smith’s exceptionally deep voice was being cut out. The group agreed that electronic music was the direction they should head in. From listening to the Terminator theme song to writing 18 new songs, Editors took two years time to record their third record, ‘In This Light and On This Evening’.

Lead singer Tom Smith had this to say about the record;

Lead Singer Tom Smith

“We wanted to create something we had never really tried out before and tried to make as many interesting sounds as possible. There are a lot of interesting percussive ideas that aren’t necessarily just from drums. There are a lot of vocals on there as well. Everybody got stuck in with those. We didn’t see any point in just repeating what we’ve done before. I’m really impressed with the songs and I think we’ve got a great record coming out.”

Leading up to this album, I was dying to hear a song. Papillon, edited, was released as a promo single and I couldn’t stop listening. The song was danceable, almost unheard of if you listened to their first two albums, and this song had such a beat and synthesizer that for a moment, I couldn’t believe that it really was Editors.

The album was available to be streamed in the U.K. and I eventually came across the download of the album and couldn’t resist. First of all, the record only contains 9 songs, so it is very short in length. This was done intentionally in order that you listen to the whole thing through, a smart idea because the whole record contains no songs that can be deemed ‘skippable’.

The record beings with it’s title track, and you are brought right away into a dark electronic synth that continues throughout the whole song and almost immediately, Tom Smith’s voice enters, dark and almost robotic. There is a little guitar in the background and a steady piano, buildup, something very crucial in this song. Heavy synth organs just under three minutes bring us in the aggressive pounding of the keys and an aggressive bass riff until it ends abruptly with the same key as the song began with, a wonderful opener, their best.

‘Bricks and Mortar’ is the longest song on the record –and Editors longest song ever – as it times in at just around six minutes and twenty seconds. This song has another echoed synth with a steady bass line until Tom comes in yet again and preaches to the masses about finding your God until the drums come in and Tom repeats his lament with the synth moving on with his voice. The chorus is the most electronic aspect of this album and it moves so well it is sounds like Depeche Mode. It moves me and is a key song on this record, along with their live performance. The song ends with the same pounding electronic sound until a well produced fade out with many loops.

‘Papillon’ is the least darkest track as it is fun and enjoyable, however it does contain it’s own dark elements from the signature “it kicks like a sleep twitch” to the pulsing bass line or steady synth that paces on throughout the entire song. The single version is edited and much shorter, but the album version has a long five minute length which has a great middle that shouldn’t be cut out. Leading us into ‘You Don’t Know Love’ we are reminded of dark Joy Division tunes to gospel songs from Depeche Mode. Tom falsettos with some ah ha’s and the song picks up with more great build up. Strings are another key part of this song as it works until two and a half minutes, and with a brief pause we get the aggressive “you don’t know love like you used to” repeated on and on until it is the last thing spoken as the track ends.

Editors; Russel, Ed, Tom, Chris

Midway point in the record and we get immersed into an almost industrial Nine Inch Nails type of sound with a wailing electronic sound that steadies on until we are brought into a cluster of dark keys and pacing aggressive synths. This song is brilliant but it by far the hardest song to get into. Evil and dark are the things this song brings, as the lyric “they took what once was ours” rages on inside your head, accompanied by another slow fade out. ‘The Boxer’ is soft and wonderful to listen and has brilliant vocal work with Tom as the beat that drives the song keeps the song cool and a great leader into the next track.

‘Like Treasure’ is my favorite song of the whole record, that’s what I am saying right away. The bass is great right off the beginning, the synths are soft but present and Tom’s voice keeps the song steady until the chorus which is so haunting it can give you Goosebumps. The background vocals are amazing and tingle the hairs on the back of your neck and as simple as the words are, they can haunt you as after the chorus moves we have a very 80’s synth which goes well with the song. Lyrically the song is mysterious and talks about politics and how corrupt they may be. This song makes the first bit of listening even more worth it.

When new Editors songs were on Youtube, I listened to every version as I could. ‘Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool’ was one of those songs which had such an aggressive tune to it I loved it. The live versions seemed to give a little more umph to the song; however the track on the album itself is very strong. Tom’s vocals are ruffled at points, and the lyrics are twisted as well. When the drumming comes in to the strong synthed chorus, this song is great. Once the piano comes it is a true Editors song and it paces on and on and once again has a great climax. Definitely single potential with this song.

‘Walk the Fleet Road’ is the ‘Well Worn Hand’ of ITLAOTE, this song is pure and wonderful with the strings and the lamenting of Tom all the way through. Simple is beauty and less is often more, something Editors show, stripping down this song to make the album end after a very interesting journey.

In This Light An On This Evening

Editors music is dark, and with the incorporation of electronic elements brings them closer to acts like Depeche Mode and Joy Division with haunting lyrics and classic songs. This album is a step in the right direction and here is another quote from Tom Smith;

“I am so fucking bored of people asking us why we’re so ‘dark’ or worse, questioning our integrity for being this way. This is how we do it, it excites us to express ourselves like this, to be honest we don’t even understand what the alternative is and the alternatives we can imagine are too boring for us to even consider.”

The quartet warned fans that they may not gain a new following, and even lose some of their deepest fans. However, in my opinion, this album brings me closer to Editors than ever. Dark emotional alternative music is what brings me closer to the songs themselves and Editors have done a phenomenal job with this record and can only get better and better from here.

It is quality, not quantity, and this is shown through only having 9 songs on a very short record, along with putting out the music they like to make. They are not going to make a fan chosen album – this is the direction the band is taking. Dislike it if you want but this is here to stay and Editors do not care who critiques them for how they sound or the nature at which they make their music.

5/5

“Darling just don´t put down your guns yet
If there really was a god here
He´d have raised a hand by now
Darling you were born get old and die here
Well that´s quite enough for me too
We´ll find our own home somehow”

Granted it will only have been roughly two years since the release of An End Has A Start, it made me smile to no end to discover the new brand new offering by, in my opinion, one of the more criminally underrated of the new new wave bands. Birmingham’s Editors are set to release their brand new record entitled In This Light and On This Evening on the 13th of October via Kitchenware in the UK. The first single off the record is sure to become a live favourite and is already becoming one of my favourite songs from the band and it’s called Papllion.

It takes the ever-evolving dark post-punk sound the band has been honing since their 2005 debut The Back Room and applies a more raw and futuristic sheen through the increased use of synthesizers. This should not really come as a surprise as singer Tom Smith stated in interviews that the band in writing their new songs had become very influenced in making a record that evoked the sound of the Blade Runner soundtrack. Listening to Papillon for the first time, I must admit Blade Runner wasn’t the first time that came to my mind. I had almost done a double take upon hearing the lead synths and thought of the band VNV Nation and their anthemic industrial pop. Needless to say, this did not detract from my going goo-goo over this track.

Who says post-punk is dead?

Genauer: “Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors” und “An End Has A Start”, zwei wunderbaren Singles mit dem gewissen melancholischen Etwas.

“The Back Room” startet eher verhalten – “Lights”, abgehakt. “You don’t need this disease”, so sieht’s aus.

Wertung: 6 / 10

Zweites Album, zweiter Versuch. “The Weight of the Worlds” strahlt dann gerade schon vor Optimismus und froher Botschaft, zumindest für Editors-Verhältnisse: “Every little peace of your live, it means something to someone.”

Wertung: 8 / 10

So weit, so gut. Tendenz eindeutig steigend, demnach dürfte man vom dritten Album, dessen Name da lautet “In This Light and On This Evening”, einiges erwarten.

I’ve been watching Rage a lot lately instead of sleeping, and one thing I’ve noticed from all the old clips is that AC/DC had freaking great fashion taste for their time.

I’ve also realised that girls in leotards with bright coloured leggings are actually quite appealing (An End Has A Start, The Editors). Does this have the potential to become a new trend? Let’s fucking hope not.
