In part 1 I discussed how these days Linux Live CDs usually come with a prebuilt disk image of the distro which is simply copied over to the hard disk during installation. (The “old” method was to rpm/dpkg-install the packages which is much more time-consuming). However my first test wasn’t very successful because I was using the “cp” command to copy files.

Anaconda (the Fedora installer) is smarter than this. It “dd”s the prebuilt disk image to the hard disk and then uses an ext2/3/4 utility called resize2fs to expand it to the correct size.

I changed the previous guestfish script to take this approach.

The new/Anaconda approach is much faster. Our total time is down from over 18 minutes to 2½ minutes (approximately 2 minutes for the “dd”, 2 seconds for the resize2fs, and the rest of the time taken doing the partitioning and LVM creation).

Unfortunately we have to leave Ubuntu behind at this point. Ubuntu ships with a squashfs, and I’m not aware of any way to turn this into an ext3 partition efficiently (except to use “cp” which we showed in part 1 was very slow). The new script only works with Fedora Live CD ISOs.

The new script is after the cut.

df-h

# Unmount everything and exit.
unmount /root
unmount /boot
unmount /tt
unmount /t

echo Done.
EOF

Anaconda doesn’t just do a straight copy, it also does a whole lot of munging of the filesystem afterwards, including replacing
/etc/fstab
and rebuilding the initramfs. The script above avoids that so you can only boot it in qemu using an external -kernel and -initrd.

I think this technique is promising. It certainly sounds wonderful to “stamp out” new distro installs in a minute or two. But …

Distributions would all have to start shipping filesystem images.

Distro-specific munging would have to be kept to an absolute minimum.

Get rid of initramfs’s that contain hard-coded details about the specific platform on which they boot (a very good idea in general IMHO).

In part 3 I’m going to compare how this approach compares to others: virt-install, manual installation, kickstart, cobbler, debootstrap and ubuntu-vm-builder.

Previously I took a look at unpacking Fedora and Ubuntu live CDs to find out what’s inside them and to ask the question can we use the prebuilt filesystem image that these live CDs contain to quickly create a Fedora or Ubuntu “all-defaults” virtual machine?

This is my first attempt, and it’s not successful, but it does demonstrate a large and interesting guestfish script doing a non-trivial amount of work.

This script:

mounts the prebuilt filesystem from either a Fedora or Ubuntu live CD

creates a disk image with a 200 MB /boot partition and a single / (root) logical volume covering the remainder of the disk

uses the cp -a command to recursively copy the prebuilt filesystem to the disk

Where it fails is that “cp” isn’t very fast. On my local machine it took 18 minutes to copy all the files across, which means this isn’t a practical “instant install” method. (I didn’t in the end try to boot the final disk image).

In part 2 this week, I’ll look at the approach that anaconda takes: It dd’s the disk image and then runs resize2fs on it to expand it into the available space.

In part 3 I’ll compare this approach to others: virt-install, manual installation, kickstart, cobbler, debootstrap and ubuntu-vm-builder.

The script itself follows after the cut:

Nicko & Joe... It started as a way of passing time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005. In

Nicko & Joe...

It started as a way of passing time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005. In between their stand-up comedy routines Nicko and Joe would raid some of Edinburgh’s finest charity shops in a bid to find the worst films ever made. What began as two people yelling at the TV soon spread and by the end of the Fringe their living room had become their own version of a packed-out cinema.

Bad Film Club has created a place where likeminded folk can gather to celebrate the guilty joy that is a good bad movie and re-create that living room atmosphere of a night in with friends.

Armed only with their wit and their laser pointers the duo take you on a journey through bad plot lines, terrible dialogue, awful acting and some of the worst special effects known to man. And all the while they provide a live DVD style commentary just in case you missed the worst bits.

Shark Attack 3...

Previous screenings of films so bad they’re good have included Snowbeast, Firestorm, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Grease 2, Anaconda, Frankenfish, Jaws 4, Strip To Kill, Water Torture, Freaks, Diary of A Sex Addict and Shark Attack 3…

Nicko and Joe’s Bad Film Club is hosted by Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff on the first Sunday of every month, but also takes place in Independent cinemas around the UK, including London’s Barbican Centre and Royal Observatory and Edinburgh’s Mercat and Pleasance Dome.

I spoke to Nicko and asked her a few questions to give you an insight into the world of Bad Film Club…

What prompted you to start the Bad Film Club?

“It was boredom really. We were up in Edinburgh doing our other show (we started out doing music and comedy) and when you’re only working for an hour a day you have a lot to do with your time, especially as we were sponsored that year and so had even less of a reason to get out of bed. So we would spend our days hunting around charity shops and second hand DVD stores finding terrible movies, go back to the flat and watch them as we shouted stuff at the screen. By the end of the fringe there were more people in our flat watching us watching movies than there were in our actual show. S0 we thought we’d give it a go.”

Snowbeast is the next film is to shown at Chapter...

You host the Bad Film Club in various venues across the UK. Which is your favourite venue, if any?

“We will always love Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre because they gave us our first shot; a brilliant man called Tony Whitehead who died a short time ago took a chance on us and for that we will always be grateful. We love doing the Barbican Centre because it’s nice to think that as we’re showing Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus the Royal Philharmonic are somewhere else in the building performing at the same time. We’ve also did a show at The Royal Observatory Planetarium this year and that was super sweet too.”

Have there been any particularly memorable screenings?

“Some have been memorable for the wrong reasons. But we did a gig just recently in Chipping Norton in this really quaint little old theatre that used to be a Salvation Army building. The audience was made up, mostly, of women who were probably more used to Women’s Institute meetings than Jaws 4, however, it was one of the nicest shows we’ve done. We then went to have a Thai meal and the restaurant was just a converted front room and contained some of the audience.”

Which film has had the best/worst reactions from an audience?

“People do let loose during the film club. Somebody rushed onto the stage during Grease 2 because they felt the urge to dance, we’ve had spoons thrown at us on stage with Peter Serafinowicz and Graham Linehan, I’ve been hit in the face with a giant shark lolly, somebody made a 17ft snake for Anaconda which was passed up and down the audience during the attack scenes. Our audiences are the strangest, nicest, coolest and most patient people you could ever meet.”

The duo take to the stage and perform stand-up comedy during the show...

Which film is scheduled to be shown next at Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre? And when will this be?

“I think the next film is our Christmas Special on December the 6th, which means free mince pies, crackers and chocolates along with the Stallone classic Daylight.”

“Well, people should head to Chapter because it’s a mondo rad venue that shows lots of different and interesting shows. As for coming to see Daylight, well they shouldn’t, they should stay at home on a Sunday night watching proper telly…However if you have a twisted need to feel disappointment and bewilderment, and love of watching integrity being lost at a rate of knots… come on down!”

To find out more about Bad Film Club, have a look at Nicko and Joe’s website here…

A noite fomos conhecer o Teatro Amazonas…lindo o lugar!!!

Me encantei com eles.

August 6, 2009

On some of my recent travels, I’ve found myself in unwitting situations where I wonder, “Where the hell am I and how did I get myself into this mess?” Anaconda hunting was a prime example of such a scenario.

When we arrived at our camp the day before, we picked out rubber boots that we would wear for the anaconda excursion. The only boots that really fit me went up mid-calf rather than up to the knee like the other ones. The guide said it didn’t matter because the mud would only come up to our ankles. As we left the following morning, a guy asked me if I’d thought about whether or not what the guide said was true. He had a point given the guides previous understatements, but it was too late because we’d already left.

The walk started off innocently enough with a little mud and some tall grass. But I soon found myself in the middle of the swamp and there was no turning back. With each step, I had no clue whether I was stepping on solid ground or what seemed like quicksand. As I alternated between unsuctioning my feet from the swamp and swatting branches out of my face, I began to question whether finding an anaconda was worth spending half a day with mud carrying unknown organisms creeping into my boots.

I eventually I fell into a stride and found that picking up the pace helped me avoid sinking into the mud. When possible, I stepped on dried grass or plants at the quicksandy patches. We crossed over a semi-dried up pond and bumped into another group who was staying at the same camp; some English college students and middle-aged Canadian couple. Their guide took off and we began to follow him, but then a group of us decided it wasn’t worth it to venture off into open land when the sun was so hot. We were very low on drinking water because we hadn’t imagined we’d be out there for so long.

This is what we spent the day looking for?!

We sat under a tree, and being still invited the creepy crawlies to climb all over us. Just as I jumped up when I found a spider on me, I heard some shouts. An anaconda had been found! Finally. We went to scope out the scene. The snake seemed lethargic and defenseless. It was obvious that it had just eaten something and you could see the outline of whatever it was digesting in it’s belly.

I was excited when people were done with the snake and we started to head back to camp. But then, a huge wasp came out of nowhere and stung me on the shoulder. It hurt like hell and my head filled with thoughts of asphyxiation. My honeymoon phase with the Amazon had ended. It didn’t mean I loved it any less, but I’d accepted the realities of it. At first you stare at it with awe and wonder, but you eventually come face to face with all of its little pests.

My boots contained miniature swamps by that point. With every step, my feet were sloshing around inside them. My guide felt bad for me and we stopped at a stream where he helped me empty my boots and rinse off my socks.

We fell way behind everyone, but eventually caught up with the Canadian couple from the other group. At that point, traversing the swamp had a become more of a mental battle than a physical one for me. My legs were propelling themselves forward independently. I was over the swamp, my mind was focused on decreasing the distance between myself and the camp. The sun was blazing overhead and there was no escaping the heat and humidity and I was completely out of water.

The Canadians kept falling behind because the woman would drop to her feet and cry every time she tripped. In the swamp, it’s easy to trip a lot. Their group’s guide was probably already back at the camp, and my guide obviously felt responsible for ensuring that they made it back safely. Every time we stopped to wait for them, both my feet and energy sunk and my mind wandered back to whether or not the wasp that stung me was poisonous. Maybe it sounds callous, but I wished the woman would pull it together. We were out in the tropical Bolivian wilderness, and there wouldn’t be a rescue helicopter coming anytime soon. And the longer we were out there, the more likely we would become dehydrated and get heatstroke.

I saw trees in the distance and figured it had to be our camp. I asked the guide to point me in the direction of the camp and took off by myself. I had a run-in with dehydration earlier in the year and I knew that I really needed to get some fluids in my system. On the way, I bumped into the guide from the other group who finally decided to come back and help out. He gave me a drink of water pointed me towards the path, but in the thick tall grass, I still got lost. I eventually heard someone frantically shouting my name, my guide coming to the rescue. I’d overshot the trail and had to go back a bit in the other direction.

When we finally got back to the camp, I immediately took off my boots and socks. My feet looked like raisins covered with melted chocolate. I chugged water and had lunch. Twenty to thirty minutes later, the Canadian couple showed up looking tired but fine. After lunch, I tried to wash the mud out of my clothing in the camp’s tiny sink. I took a long cold shower and found an empty to hammock to lie in and contemplate the day. As much as I’d not enjoyed the swamp experience, it was a good challenge. I’d done it very ungracefully, but I’d completed it and that made me happy.

The late afternoon brought a much more enjoyable activity– piranha fishing. I’d never been fishing before, but it always seemed like it would be interesting to try. I enjoyed being back on the boat. The river was more friendly and fun than the open lands, as long as you didn’t fall victim to a cayman. After several tries, I caught a small fish. It wasn’t a piranha, but that didn’t take away from my excitement about catching a fish for the first time.

We were budget fishing and our rods were handmade. They consisted of just a hook, fishing wire, and a stick. The hooks kept getting stuck on trees or ripped off by piranhas. We headed back to camp when we ran out of supplies and bait. We only came away with three piranhas, all caught by our guide.

The evening was similar to the previous one. First there was a stop at the Sunset Bar. Back at the camp we had dinner, which included the three piranhas our guide caught. There is not a lot of meat on them, but they are tasty little fish. After dinner, the cooks brought us wine and a strange delicious concoction made of fruit and cookies that resembled a cake. I’m not sure if we were celebrating the second and last night of the tour or Bolivian Independence Day. Maybe both. There were no daily parades in the jungle so I’d forgotten it was Independence Day. We played cards by flashlight after the power went out. For some reason, the mosquitos were even more vicious that night than they were the previous night. My shoulder already had a swollen bump the diameter of a baseball where I’d been stung. I was tired of bugs and wanted to get up early for the sunrise, so I went back to our room early and settled into my mosquito net covered oasis.

5) Susan Backlinie in “Lo Squalo” (1975)

4) Kari Wuhrer in “Anaconda” (1997)

3) Salma Hayek in “Dal tramonto all’alba” (1996)

1) Janet Leigh in “Psycho” (1960)

Seminale.

16.October:
We got picked up at the airport in a little shuttle bus and arrived the Cumaceba Lodge in the Amazon jungle after taking a speed boat on the Amazon river. At the lodge we got a very tasty lunch and a one hour sleep. Then we headed off to a little village with a tree boat equipped with what seemed to be a giant handmixer as an engine. We were met by a giant corn field with some small tree huts were hiding in the background.

in the great corn field

After walking up a little hill, a bunch of small wholly monkeys came running and bouncing towards us! They were very friendly and extremely curious. In a matter of seconds they were climbing all over us, grabbing my cap, pulling my shirt, biting my ear and kissing Marita. The two rascals that we got the most familiar with was called Pepe and Julian. They were just like little kids, eager to play and with a very strong personality. Pepe was definately the most crazy one! He wouldn’t stand still for more than a glimpse of an eye. Julian, on the other hand were more calm and stayed on my shoulder for a while as I walked around the little village looking at some kind of small pigs next to a tree hut.

the wholly monkey Julian

some kind of strange pig

Three racoons were also running around the place and the monkeys had fun teasing the racoons by jumping at them and slapping them on the back, and then leaping into a tree swinging from branch to branch. All of the sudden a giant spider monkey (looking like Leif Juster) jumped from a branch and almost hit our guide Walter. Walter was 23 years old and dreamed about starting his own tourist company while working as a guide at the Cumaceba Lodge. His english was pretty good, while most of the other locals we met knew few or no English words.

a curious racoon

spider monkey

As we were walking around in what seemed to be the garden of the little hut, beautiful Macaws (parrots) were flying over our heads and squeaking from the trees. Then we saw a familiar furry little fella – the sloth/perezoso. This guy had three claws and was remarkably calm. He almost looked exaclty like Sid from the movie Ice Age. He had a nice little face and seemed to be smiling as he tilted his head and looked at us curiously.

blue and yellow Macaw

Marita holding the sloth/perezoso

A few minutes later we got to see a prehistoric turtle who closely resembled a dinosaurus. His shell was strong a bulky while his head was shaped as a triangle with an eye on each side. Truly a strange lad. Walter then went to fetch a 3m anaconda which we got to pet. It was pretty heavy, thick and a bit slimy from the mud. All this time a bunch of monkeys were following us and bounching around like basketballs on the loose.

along with a 3m anaconda

All of the sudden we spotted a couple of really small and very fast monkeys which we quickly recognized from the Costa Rican National Park in Manuel Antonio. It was the Common Esquirel monkey! But these guys were not afraid at all and we picked them up and started playing around with them for a while.

It is very strange to hold the monkeys as they hold onto you with their little hands and climb everything so effortless. Even their tail feels somewhat like a fifth hand and they can lift themselves onto your arm only using their tail! I was totally enthralled by these little creatures. A fantastic experience!

The locals then showed us a bunch of small home made bottles with medicines made from roots and plants from the jungle. A couple of them were drinkable, while one was like a white cream that you were supposed to put on your skin. This one in particular was for curing wounds, inflammations and arthrithir (leddgikt). We got to try a couple of shots of the drinkable ones and I bought a bottle of one called Dragon Blood for 20 soles (40 NOK). Dragon Blood or Sangre de Grado, which is its local name, helps for ulceras, wounds, and mothers may drink it after giving birth or alernatively wash their womb with it after giving birth. It is made from the sap/tree blood of the tree Sangre de Grado.

Walter behind "the medicine bar"

Sadly we had to leave the playful monkeys and head back to the boat. We then went scouting for dolphins. Some 15 minutes later we witnessed a 3-4 pink(!) dolphins swimming around the boat as the sun started to set in the horiozont. The pink dolphins are a bit bigger than the grey ones and can get up to 2.5-3m. Due to their size they don’t leap into the air (our guide told us), but you can see most of their gracious body as they wake in the river surface. A speactacular sight, though a bit hard to catch on film.

We then went swimming in the Amazon river. Not everyone in jumped at this possibility as the water was a bit murky and muddy and some were afraid of the piranhas. However, the water was quite warm and safe. The piranhas will not bite humans unless you have a rather big bleeding wound. So if you put your finger in a bowl piranhas, they will probably not bite you (according to the guide I got to know Walter and Jeraldine, a girl from Lima a bit better, during our swim. As we were swimming around in the Amazon the river, the sunset was complete – a magnificient ending of a great day.

In the late evening, after dinner, we went on an aligator/caiman safari in a long and shallow canoe on a small river in the jungle behind the lodge. Since it was completely dark, we were all wearing headlights while scouting into the great dark unknown for any sign of life. The air was filled with sounds from crickets, birds, frogs etc. but it was very hard to spot them. At first we only got to see a sloth sitting high above the ground in a tree. Although during the trip we passed four aligators/caimans, but only the eyes were visible as they reflected some rays from our headlights. We also managed to spot some tiny frogs as they were “singing” loudly while sitting in small flowers floating next to the canoe.

in the canoe during the jungle trip

In the late hours of the evening, some people from Peru tried to teach me how to dance Peruan dances while the locals where playing guitar, maracas and singing. I gotta tell you this was not easy! Most of the steps seemed somewhat random and off beat, but it was fun and I got to know a bunch of nice people from Peru. As my Spanish skills are close to non-existent, our guide Walter acted as am interpreter and helped me out with translations whenever I got stuck
