It’s official.

Analog has purchased my science fiction story, Flotsam.  I got the contracts in today’s mail.  No word yet on when it will appear next year.

Flotsam is the story of a three-person salvage crew stranded in near-Earth orbit after their ship is struck by orbital debris. The story was workshopped last July at the University of Kansas during Jim Gunn’s SF Writers Workshop.

For those of you who were part of the critique group there, I was calling it Fat-Bottomed Girl.  I want to thank all of you who offered critiques, either as part of the Kansas workshop or as independent readers. The story is what it is now because of your help.

And I particularly want to thank Professor Gunn for his insightful critiques and for encouraging me to send Flotsam to Analog.  Jim, you are my hero.

Needless to say, I am chuffed!

Nawiązując do ostatniej tendencji powrotu aparatów dalmierzowych (rangefinder) oraz po pozazdroszczeniu Remkowi jego Cannonetki, stałem się dzisiaj posiadaczem Voigtländer VF135. Jednak nie był to oczywiście główny powód zakupu. Zmotywował mnie brak czegoś małego, poręcznego, nie rzucającego się w oczy w tłumie turystów… Czegoś co bym mógł mieć przy sobie w czasie chodzenia na uczelnie czy podczas tułaczki po zakątkach miasta, gdzie wychodzi się na pole. Ostatnio właśnie zaniedbałem jakiekolwiek robienie zdjęć. Motywem jest po prostu brak czasu, który w pełni przeznaczam na schematy blokowe, liczby zespolone, twierdzenia Banacha i innych. Lekiem na tą sytuacje ma być VF135.

Dlaczego zdecydowałem się na ten model? Ponieważ jest to odpowiednik Rollei 35, z tym, że pod inną nazwą, a dostępność RF w Polsce jest raczej mała. Jednak głównym powodem były prace, które zobaczyłem w Internecie wykonane tym aparatem. Szczególnie urzekło mnie to, czarno białe zdjęci:

Ich war mir gar nicht bewusst, dass mein letzter Eintrag schon so lange her ist. Es liegt wohl daran, dass ich in letzter Zeit ziemlich selten längere Zeit zu Hause bin, ohne etwas vor zu haben. Da wir hier keine Heizung haben, ist das zumindest an den kälteren Tagen ohnehin nicht die beste Idee. Ich verbringe die Zeit mit Freunden in Bars, im Kino und Theater, bei Spaziergängen durch die Stadt, beim Salsa-Kurs, fotografierend, mitunter zu lange vor dem Computer und natürlich auch im Krankenhaus. Seit heute bin ich in der Allgemein-Chirurgie. Spannend ist es dort auf jeden Fall, wenn auch es sich wohl eher nicht um meine spätere Facharztrichtung handelt.

Vor inzwischen schon  2 Wochen war mein Schwesterherz samt Martin hier zu Besuch. Wir hatten ein sehr schönes Wochenende und Martin hat auch den großen Anteil an spanischer Konversation tapfer ertragen.

Eine Woche später war der Kammerjäger in unserer Wohnung. Ich hatte ja eigentlich kaum noch damit gerechnet. Eine Freundin von einem meiner beiden Mitbewohner hat uns zwei Nächte in ihrer großen WG wohnen lassen, damit das Gift länger und vor allem nicht auf uns wirken kann. Da man nach so einer Aktion sämtliches Geschirr uvm. reinigen muss, ist unsere Wohnung jetzt ordentlich wie nie zuvor. Vor allem die Küche (einige der Leser kennen ja deren Größe) bietet auf einmal ungeahnten Stauraum…

Gestern war doch tatsächlich schon der 1. Advent. Die Adventssonntage werden hier in Spanien, soweit ich das mitbekommen habe, nicht sonderlich gefeiert. Überhaupt kommt hier nur wenig Weihnachtsstimmung auf – auch nicht durch die üppige Beleuchtung, durch die viele Straßen seit Freitag des nachts geschmückt sind. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass hier bis vor anderthalb Wochen tagsüber noch bis zu 20°C waren. Jedoch hielt sich meine Weihnachtsstimmung in den letzten Jahren ohnehin in Grenzen. Mit Weihnachtsgebäck bin ich immerhin bestens versorgt und auch meinen Mitbewohnern schmeckt es. Vielen Dank nochmal an dieser Stelle.

In 3 Wochen bin ich schon in Berlin. Ich freue mich zwar darauf, allerdings bedeutet es auch, dass dann schon etwas mehr als die Hälfte meines Aufenthalts hier in Madrid vorbei ist. Aber das hat ja mit Berlin und vor allem mit euch nichts zu tun :-).

Nada-nada minor dari siswa sering terdengar saat saya sebagai guru seni dan budaya memberikan tugas praktek, terutama tugas yang berkaitan dengan ilustrasi, desain grafis bahkan sampai videografi. Banyak sekali alasan yang dapat ditangkap dari mereka. Mulai dari alasan yang secara natural mereka terlahir tidak disertai bakat berkesenian, bisa melukis ataupun menggambar tetapi tidak bisa menemukan ide dan inspirasi sampai alasan yang bisa dikatakan sangat apatis, yaitu bahwa sebenarnya mereka memang tidak tercipta sebagai makhluk kreatif dan lain sebagainya. Alasan-alasan yang lucu namun masih bisa diterima oleh akal.

Untuk alasan yang terakhir bahwa ada individu-individu yang tidak tercipta sebagai makhluk kreatif agaknya perlu mendapat perhatian lebih lanjut. Bukan bermaksud menolak anggapan tersebut namun perlu adanya pemikiran yang positif untuk mendukung terciptanya kreatifitas. Pemikiran yang mengetengahkan bahwa kreatifitas bisa dibangun dan didapatkan unuk nantinya diaplikasikan dalam kegiatan berkesenian.

Salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan untuk membangun kreatifitas adalah metode analog. Entah darimana istilah dan metode ini berasal (saya sendiri mendapatkannya dari bangku kuliah dulu dengan dosen bapak Drs. Sugiyono Ardjaka, M.Sc )namun metode ini cukup efektif dalam membantu kita membangun kreatifitas.

Teori analog sebagai teori kreatifitas

Dalam teori ini secara sederhana dapat dipahami bahwa dalam proses berkesenian maupun berkarya kekosongan ide merupakan hal yang lumrah, tidak ada masalah besar mengenainya. Namun kekosongan ide tersebut ditutupi oleh ada “acuan” yang merupakan landasan atau pijakan bagaimana karya seni itu akan diciptakan, bagaimana karya seni itu akan diaplikasikan dan bagaimana karya seni itu diimplementasikan sebagai bagian dari kehidupan manusia.

Dari gambar diatas bisa dibaca bahwa dengan adanya acuan, kita sebagai konseptor karya seni maupun desain mampu merancang program perancangan karya seni ataupun desain. Setelah didapatkan konsep dalam proses refleksi maka dalam proses rekonstruksi, konsep-konsep yang telah didapatkan bisa langsung dieksekusi dengan teknik ataupun metode yang telah dikuasai untuk mendapatkan karya yang terbaik.

Mendapatkan Acuan

Untuk mendapatkan acuan dalam teori analog bisa didapatkan dari mencari sesuatu yang sama dari beberapa hal yang tidak sama untuk mendapatkan sesuatu yang baru. Misalnya dari hal yang tidak sama yaitu (A*) dan (B*) maka bisa didapatkan sesuatu yang sama yaitu (*). Sesuatu yang sama tersebut kemudian direfleksikan dan direkonstruksikan menjadi (C*) misalnya.

Sesuatu yang sama tersebut dipilah menjadi beberapa bagian untuk memudahkan proses berpikir.

1. Analog Logis

• Desain Analog, acuan didapatkan dari elemen dan struktur formal desain yang sudah ada (meliputi konsep nirmana, gaya, objek seni dan lain sebagainya).
• Fungsi Analog, acuan didapatkan dari fungsi dan tujuan perancangan karya seni.
• Fenomena Analog, acuan didapatkan dari keterkaitan karya seni dengan social budaya masyarakat, teknologi, trend dan lain sebagainya.

2. Analog Psikologis

• Sensori Analog, acuan diperoleh dari hasil inderawi manusia
• Empati Analog, acuan diperoleh dari emosi yang bisa didapatkan.
• Simbolik Analog, acuan diperoleh dari pesan yang terkandung dari karya seni tersebut.
• Fantasi Analog, Acuan diperoleh dari impian dan fantasi yang diangan-angankan.

Teori ini hanyalah salah satu cara atau metode yang bisa digunakan untuk mendapatkan ide dan kreatifitas dalam kegiatan berkarya seni. Masih ada teori lain yang mungkin lebih ampuh untuk mendapatkan hasil yang maksimal. Namun tidak ada salahnya apabila kita mencoba mengaplikasikan teori ini saat kita sedang kering ide.

An so einer Kamerabörse war ich schon immer interessiert, konnte mich aber bisher nicht wirklich dazu bewegen da mal vorbeizuschauen. Heute war es soweit, ich besuchte die Kamerbörse in der Mensa der TU Darmstadt. Das erste was mir aufgefallen war, ist das Alter der Besucher. Meistens Männer in einem Alter ab 45-50 Jahre. Das Angebot war zu über 90% analoges Fotoequipment, von alten Rolleiflex über historische Kameras bis hin zu SLR-Gehäusen und Objektiven. Ich hatte eigentlich vor unter umständen eine Olympus Pen zu erstehen, es war aber nur ein Apparat in zweifelhaften Zustand vorhanden. Überhaupt waren Olympus Kameras nicht sehr zahlreich vertreten, meistens OM Gehäuse und insgesamt sehr wenige OM-Objektive. Für einen Fotogbegeisterten ist es natürlich interessant mal zu stöbern aber was wirklich Interessantes zu einem guten Preis habe ich dort nicht gefunden. Stark vertreten war dort auch die Leicafraktion. Also wer auf alte Leica M modelle steht, sollte dort mal vorbeischauen und vorher den Geldautomaten ausnehmen. Wenn man schon mal dort ist, kann man auch in der Mensa was essen, dachte ich. Allerdings war die Mahlzeit geschmacklich und ästhetisch etwas grenzwertig. Arme Studenten, hat mich an meine Uni-Zeit erinnert. Insgesamt gesehen ist so eine Kamerabörse eher was für Sammler und Analogfans.

When we look at retail advertising and sales catalogues we see that the two categories are characterised by different styles of tracksuit. So the training tracksuit could be summarised as attractive durable clothing essential to the football team and other sporting entities. However it is more than just clothing; it is the corporate image of a business where branding and success go hand in hand, therefore the sublimated embroidery on the football jerseys, shorts and sport socks reflecting the Sponsors name and brand image are crucial in promoting the game and team.

Team tracksuits will display team colours, kit design and Sponsor logo. Professional football teams may well have a number of training tracksuits but each will display the same branding and logo that defines the team and their Sponsor. The durable quality of the training tracksuit will be characterised by the fabric, careful seam stitching and design and the ability of the fabric to breathe and stretch without tearing. The common theme in training tracksuits is that they are fit for purpose.

When we talk about walking tracksuits then a somewhat different set of criteria is applied as regards fit for purpose wear. The rigours of everyday training will not apply and we are looking at a product that characterises comfort above all else. The wearer of the walking tracksuit is looking for flexibility in the fabric and more plain colours probably darker rather than bright. Walkers do not generally want to stand out like a sore thumb when hiking in the countryside or anywhere else so they normally opt for plain colours when purchasing a tracksuit. Blending into the environment is preferable to calling out like a siren, where ever we are walking, so subdued colours and designs are preferable to the intricate designs and colour combinations used in training tracksuits. Trouser design can be different where the walking tracksuit has normal or slightly wider leg bottoms to cover walking boots or shoes as opposed to tight or zipped training trouser leg bottoms.

The walking top is usually a little longer than the training top and has a loose waist as opposed to an elasticated tight waist. The fabric can be similar but does not need to be as durable and this provides a wide choice of fabrics for the consumer.

You can probably save two hundred dollars if you do this yourself.

Remember that buying the flat screen TV is just the beginning of your investment to have HD TV in your home.

19th Hole – a term that jokingly refers to the clubhouse.

Albatross – three strokes under par.

I have to confess, I  was never a film guy till now. My first analog experience was when I was twelve, I took my parents’ camera, a Zenit 12XP with Helios 2/58, to try it. My parents have took some great photos over the years without knowing much about photography. Therefore, they couldn’t explain to me what is aperture or how do you choose aperture and speed settings. They had also forgotten that the poor old russian Zenit dog had an internal exposure meter. I didn’t know about it and the batteries were dead so I didn’t suspect it too.

Fourteen years passed since and I have now access to the always open gate of knowledge, internet. I have learned how to use it even if I haven’t replaced the batteries yet. I also won an Olympus OM2 on an online auction, I thought that $25 worth even if it works once. It turns out it’s a tough workhorse. Just today I received the scans of the first roll I put in it, an expired Kodacolor 400. I also developed an Ilford Delta 3200 I used with the Zenit, damn’ I loved that grainy dirt!

So eventually I think I feel the romanticism that many photographers feel magnetised from. I intend to continue shooting digital but I’d love to have an analog camera with me too. The excitement and the suspense of the waiting is definitely something irreplaceable.

3 more weeks and Margots world will never be the same.I never did photos with a pregnant woman before but found it a great thing to do especially cause there is a lot more intimacy then with normal portraits and there is no discussing about the sujet cause the belly is the sujet itself.I found that analog images with very simple background and just a little bit of light, work out best.

Seit Vinyl wieder hip und trendy ist, gibt es auch Neuentwicklungen bei den Plattenspielern. Der “Void LP Player” zeigt, dass Analog- und Hightech vereinbar sind.

Dieses Gerät strapaziert unsere Seh- und Denkgewohnheiten. Allerdings konnten die Konstrukteure des Void nicht etwa die Schwerkraft aufheben, sondern setzen ein starkes Magnetfeld ein, um Platte und den Tonabnehmer (die Nadel sitzt in der Kugel) zu levitieren. So etwas ist heute praxistauglicher, da wir nicht mehr mit Magnetbändern an der Stereoanlage herumhantieren. Verstärker und Lautsprecher des Void LP wurden natürlich entsprechend abgeschirmt.

Der Tonabnehmer besitzt eine Autokalibrierung und ein Kontrollsystem, damit der Ton nicht leiert. Hier dreht sich natürlich nicht die Platte, sondern die Kugel wird vom Magnetfeld im Kreis geführt. Das aparte Konzept ist momentan nur eine Design-Fingerübung. Hoffentlich wird es in (Klein-) Serie gehen. [Ralf]

In den Achzigern und heute

Andere schreiben Ihre Memoiren. Das ist mir noch ein bißchen zu früh. Aber als mir vor kurzem durch den Kopf schoß, daß ich heuer seit 25 Jahren mit Nikon-Kameras arbeite, da wurde mir auch bewußt, daß ich natürlich und selbstverständlich dann auch bereits ein Vierteljahrhundert als Bildjournalist auf dem Buckel habe.

Na gut, dachte ich mir, jetzt hast du schon einen Film über deine ganzen “alten Hobel” gemacht, dann mach doch noch einen, fass’ mal zwei Jahrzehnte in zweieinhalb Minuten zusammen.  Und dann such in deinem Halbmillionenbildarchiv doch einfach noch ein paar persönliche Bilder raus und mach doch einen launigen Artikel. Es gibt ja noch mehr als alte Kameras. Die “gute alte Zeit”, die kannte ja auch noch das Leuchtpult, das Dia, den Fotoabzug, Passepartouts, Slide-Sheets, äh, Diahüllen, Archiv-Regale, Archiv-Kästen, Acetathüllen für Prints und all solche Dinge.

Also bin ich nochmal in mein “Alt-Archiv” getigert und habe ein bißchen rumgewühlt. Hoffnungsloser Nostalgiker eben. Ach, und manchmal macht es doch auch einfach Spaß, in der eigenen Vergangenheit rumzukramen. Ich schau’ mir ja auch gerne Fotoalben an.

Da sind wir auch gleich an einem Punkt, warum jeder was von der Fotografie hat. Die Fotografie hält das Gedächtnis wach. Man erinnert sich an Orte und Ereignisse und kann sie sich auch visuell ins Gedächtnis zurückrufen. Ich sage immer “Ohne die Fotografie verlieren wir unsere Erinnerungen”. Ohne die Fotografie verblaßt irgendwann alles im Dunkel der Vergangenheit. Wir vergessen, wie Orte und Menschen ausgesehen haben. Wir brauchen Fotos, um die Erinnerung wachzuhalten.

Würden wir uns denn, könnten wir es überhaupt, an die unbeschreibliche Stimmung im November 1989 erinnern, an die Zeit vor 20 Jahren, als die Mauer fiel, wenn es davon keine Fotos und keine Filme gäbe? Wüßten spätere Generationen, wie das damals gewesen war?

Und, zugegebenermaßen, heute am Notebook, mit Memory-Cards in der digitalen SLR, mit FTP und Online-Bilddatenbank, würde ich nicht ab und an mal wieder einen Blick auf mein Leuchtpult werden, einen Abzug in die Hand nehmen (und überlegen, ob ich den nicht vielleicht mal einscannen sollte) oder ein paar Diahüllen, die Filmschnipselchen mit der Lupe auf Schärfe begutachten, man könnte ja irgendwann wirklich vergessen, wie man mal bis vor nicht allzu langer Zeit gearbeitet hat.

Und heute? Heute habe ich dank IrfanView den “elektronischen Kontaktbogen”. Ist das nicht toll? Den kann ich dann ausdrucken und mir ganz normal anschauen, so wie früher den mit den Filmstreifen drauf. Er hat aber auch einen Vorteil: den kann ich nicht nur ausgedruckt einer CD beilegen, die ich meinen Kunden schicke, den kann ich auch als E-Mail-Attachment verschicken und mein Kunde weiß dann, was ich Neues in der Datenbank habe.

Oder, wenn er, wie der oben, nun auch schon ein paar Jährchen alt ist, als “digitale Nostalgie” hier in einen Artikel packen. Neh, neh, Nostalgie ist was schönes, aber die digitale Welt hat schon so ihre Vorzüge. Was hatte ich früher zu tun, wenn ich einen Bildkatalog erstellen wollte. Das ist schon viel einfacher geworden. Und es ist ja nicht so, daß man sowas nicht mehr bräuchte. Und außerdem kann man sowas nun auch schön online machen.

Last but not least findet man unser Bildmaterial auch bei der Bildmaschine in der Datenbank und auch bei unseren – und da ist schon der kleine Schlenker zurück zum Ausgangspunkt – bei unseren traditionellen Vertriebspartnern und Bildagenturen, mit denen wir bereits nun auch seit zwei Jahrzehnten zusammenarbeiten, etwa Interfoto.
