In generale non sono il tipo di persona che va a vedere lo stesso gruppo più di una volta, salvo specifici casi: come quello dei Dark Tranquillity, che guarda caso erano il gruppo preferito di Psyche e che credo di aver visto qualcosa come cinque volte. Ma dato che i soldi scarseggiano sempre e i gruppi che varrebbe la pena di vedere sono virtualmente infiniti, non è opportuno insistere sempre sulla stessa band, finendo in tal modo per trascurare altre formazioni sicuramente meritevoli.

Nel caso dei Porcupine Tree sono invece alla mia terza data, e questo va al di là del fatto che si tratta – come ho già detto e ripetuto – di una delle mie band preferite. Al mio primo concerto della prog band inglese (19/09/06) ci ero andato quasi per caso, conoscendo per giunta il solo album “In Absentia”; in seguito a quella data ho avuto modo di ascoltare e apprezzare molti altri dischi dei PT, così mi è sembrato naturale tornarli a vedere un anno dopo (18/11/07), anche perché c’erano i miei amati Anathema come opening-act; purtroppo quella sera Psyche è stata colpita da un malore all’inizio della performance di Wilson e soci, così abbiamo dovuto allontanarci subito dall’agognata prima fila e in seguito abbiamo saggiamente deciso di lasciare l’Alcatraz prima della fine del concerto. Fatto sta che senz’altro me la meritavo una terza opportunità.

Aggiungerei inoltre un particolare piuttosto rilevante: il bello dei concerti dei Porcupine Tree è che davvero non hai idea di che cosa suoneranno. Non sono una di quelle band che sul palco ti portano sempre il loro greatest hits, riveduto e corretto col passare degli anni ma sempre grossomodo stabile. Con i PT ogni singola canzone pubblicata negli ultimi diciott’anni è potenzialmente inseribile in scaletta, cosa che rende in un certo senso unica ciascuna delle loro performance: nella data milanese del 2007 avevano estratto dalla manica due b-side semisconosciute (Half-Light e Drown with Me) e l’anno prima, addirittura, avevano passato la prima ora di concerto suonando unicamente materiale inedito, materiale che sarebbe poi confluito nell’album “Fear of a Blank Planet”. 

Quella di Milano è la prima delle quattro date italiane del tour di supporto all’ultimo album “The Incident”, uscito il 18 settembre per la Roadrunner Records (e che spero di riuscire a recensire entro fine anno).

Specialmente in questi ultimi anni, Wilson e soci hanno ampliato decisamente la loro base di fan, essendo i PT una band apprezzata sia per l’aspetto prog, sia per le inflessioni metal, sia per le ballad sognanti e malinconiche. Il che significa che i loro concerti sono stranamente popolati tanto da giovanotti imberbi con le magliette dei Meshuggah quanto da dark ladies di ogni sorta e, naturalmente, veterani del prog.

Come volevasi dimostrare, infatti, l’Alcatraz è gremito da subito, e io, che ho passato un’ora e mezza a bestemmiare alacremente in mezzo al traffico cittadino, arrivando in loco appena un quarto d’ora dopo l’apertura dei cancelli, mi sono dovuto accontentare di una comunque dignitosa terza fila.

Non mi soffermerò molto sulla band di supporto, il trio francese dei Demians, che non mi ha granché entusiasmato. Prog? Psichedelici? Sì, forse un po’. Ma si tratta per lo più di divagazioni innestate su uno sfondo rock che, per riffing e impostazione vocale, mi ha ricordato molto i Creed, solo con molte più tastiere campionate. I ragazzi s’impegnano, si sforzano di essere originali e bisogna riconoscerglielo, ma a mio parere non sono molto ispirati; buono comunque il brano di chiusura, The Perfect Symmetry.

Conclusa la mezz’oretta dei Demians compaiono subito i roadie, che spazzano via ogni ricordo del gruppo spalla portando alla luce il portentoso drum kit di Gavin Harrison e l’angolo giochi di Richard Barbieri (tastiere, synth, MacBook). Pochi minuti dopo desta notevole curiosità la comparsa di un grosso aspirapolvere, che un roadie porta a spasso per tutto il palco con apparente disinvoltura, ripulendo coscienziosamente ogni remoto angolino… eh già, il nostro amico Steven non ha ancora perso l’abitudine di suonare a piedi nudi!

In perfetto orario la band sale sul palco e, nella preminente oscurità, attacca con la intro “Occam’s Razor” e subito dopo con la coinvolgente “The Blind House”, i primi due movimenti della lunga suite che dà il titolo all’ultimo album. Steven Wilson, nella prima pausa disponibile, saluta l’audience spiegando che la prima metà del concerto sarà costituita dalla riproposizione integrale dei 55 minuti di The Incident (cosa che quel chiacchierone antipatico dietro di me aveva già svelato qualche minuto prima… e io che mi ero astenuto tutto il tempo dal guardare le scalette degli altri concerti per non rovinarmi la sorpresa!).

Ormai conscio del mio destino, mi rassegno a questa prima parte non esageratamente esaltante (non ho amato particolarmente il loro ultimo album) dividendo la mia attenzione tra la band, che esegue in maniera impeccabile e con una grande raffinatezza sonora i quattordici movimenti di The Incident, e lo schermo che trasmette le enigmatiche creazioni del film-maker danese Lasse Holle, il cui stile a tratti assomiglia terribilmente a quello dei primi video dei Tool.

La prima parte della suite, come tipo di sonorità e attitudine del pubblico, si addice più a un auditorium che a una discoteca rock, salvo alcuni passaggi come il ritornello (osceno) di “Drawing the Line” e il finale di “The Incident”. Ma con la bellissima “Time Flies” il concerto inizia finalmente a decollare e la seconda parte, più ruvida, ha una resa live superiore, anche grazie alle peripezie balistiche di Gavin Harrison, tributario di numerose ovazioni personali. È invece curioso vedere come nel corso della suite Wilson cambi chitarra in media ogni tre minuti, mentre John Wesley – che ha una pedaliera grossa quanto la mia scrivania – mantenga la stessa fino alla fine della prima parte, cambiandola solo per la conclusiva “I Drive the Hearse”, dove è investito del compito di eseguire lo struggente solo conclusivo.

Dopo dieci minuti dieci di pausa (con tanto di conto alla rovescia sullo schermo) la band ritorna sul palco, ed è subito l’inizio di qualcosa di bellissimo: non lo dico solo per parafrasare il titolo del brano che apre la seconda parte del concerto, quanto perché bellissimo lo è stato per davvero, grazie alla qualità delle canzoni proposte e alle due “sorprese” riservate nella scaletta. La prima – che per l’emozione mi fa venire i brividi, e a momenti le lacrime agli occhi – è l’iperdepressa Russia on Ice, a cui viene agganciata la devastante sezione centrale di Anesthetize (che, a quanto apprendo dalla scaletta, viene chiamata confidenzialmente Pills I’m Taking). La seconda è la malinconica Stars Die, un singolo coevo all’uscita di “The Sky Moves Sideways” (1995) e a quanto pare mai proposto in Italia, dove i PT hanno iniziato a esibirsi a partire dal 1997. A tal proposito, introducendo questo brano, Steven Wilson ha domandato se qualcuno del pubblico fosse presente all’epoca dei primi concerti italiani, ma il boato della platea sembra un po’ troppo forte per il quattrocchi scalzo. «Questo non è possibile», commenta Wilson, «me le ricordo quelle serate piovose a Milano con trenta persone di numero…».

In questa seconda frazione di concerto, insieme al repertorio, è cambiato anche il tipo di risposta del pubblico, che se nella prima parte restava in muta ammirazione (spero non fosse noia) come davanti a ogni spettacolo prog che si rispetti, nella seconda si è decisamente scatenato. Dopo una bella accoppiata di classici recenti, la band annuncia l’ultimo brano: ma quando parte Bonnie the Cat è evidente che non fanno sul serio, perché non esiste canzone più fredda e anti-catartica di quella. Infatti, dopo un paio di minuti di buio con i roadie che trafficano sul palco, Wilson e soci ritornano alla ribalta con un’ultima doppietta tratta dal celebrato “In Absentia”: The Sound of Muzak e Trains.

Quest’ultima, in particolare, viene presentata in modo piuttosto enigmatico da Steven Wilson, che sostiene come gli ingredienti di un buon concerto siano “music, magic and comedy”. L’enigma si chiarisce nella pausa centrale di Trains quando, dopo un ottimo brano (music) e un emozionante refrain cantato ad alta voce dal pubblico (magic) arriva il momento della comedy, con Gavin Harrison che emerge da dietro la batteria improvvisandosi giocoliere per qualche secondo. E l’ilarità continua subito dopo con la presentazione del resto della band. Richard “io con gli occhiali da sole ci vado anche a dormire” Barbieri viene presentato dicendo: «È di origine italiana, sapete?». Poi è la volta di John Wesley, «direttamente dagli Stati Uniti», e parte un breve sample di Born in the USA di Bruce Springsteen. Il giro si conclude con il buon Colin Edwin che, benché nato a Melbourne, è a tutti gli effetti «inglese di Hemel Hempstead», e parte il tema di Another One Bites the Dust dei Queen. Un ultimo ritornello, un finale carico di gioia, un mare di applausi e inchini per un concerto davvero strepitoso ed emozionante.

In generale non sono il tipo di persona che va a vedere lo stesso gruppo più di una volta. Ma dato che in questo caso ho già fatto un’eccezione, e solo il cielo sa quanto ne sia valsa la pena, chissà mai che con i Porcupine Tree non possa capitare di nuovo… 

Una premessa per quanto riguarda il video. Nella mia vita ho compiuto e compio tuttora svariati atti di pirateria, ma ho sempre fatto delle distinzioni. E se una band che rispetto mi chiede ripetutamente di non scattare foto o fare riprese durante i suoi concerti, io non solo non faccio niente del genere, ma mi astengo dal pubblicare ciò che altri hanno ripreso contravvenendo a questa regola. Quindi, piuttosto che andare a scartabellare su YouTube per proporvi qualcosa dello specifico concerto di Milano, vi propongo una bella versione di The Start of Something Beautiful tratta dal dvd live del 2005 “Arriving Somewhere…”.

Ciò che ha reso indimenticabili alcuni dei concerti a cui ho avuto modo di assistere negli ultimi 10-12 anni è stata, curiosamente, la presenza in scaletta di qualche cover. Sembra un controsenso, dal momento che uno dovrebbe andare a un concerto per sentire il materiale composto dal gruppo in questione, e non da qualcun altro. Tuttavia, quando la formazione che si esibisce sul palco si improvvisa cover band per qualche minuto e prende in prestito dei brani che talvolta sono in grado di esaltare la platea non meno dei propri, il piacere e l’emozione del pubblico vengono elevati all’ennesima potenza.

Per quanto riguarda la mia esperienza personale, l’apoteosi in questo senso è costituita dallo show acustico degli Anathema tenutosi a Milano il 12 dicembre 2004, che i fratelli Cavanagh hanno concluso inanellando una dopo l’altra Something in the Way (Nirvana), Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd), Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) e Big Love (Fleetwood Mac). Ma una delle cover più inattese e spettacolari che mi sia mai capitato di sentire dal vivo è stata Hallowed Be Thy Name degli Iron Maiden, eseguita dai Dream Theater nel concerto milanese del 5 febbraio 2004 (il tour di “Train of Thought”).

I Dream Theater, del resto, potrebbero scrivere un manuale su come si fanno cover. Si veda in proposito l’indimenticabile sezione di pietre miliari del rock inclusa nel disco “A Change of Seasons” (1995), oltre alla serie di bootleg ufficiali nei quali hanno riproposto per intero alcuni album storici del rock e dell’heavy metal, da “Made in Japan” dei Deep Purple a “Master of Puppets” dei Metallica, passando per “The Dark Side of the Moon” dei Pink Floyd e, per l’appunto, “The Number of the Beast” degli Iron Maiden.

Ma a quanto pare la prog metal band per eccellenza ha puntato su un diverso tipo di repertorio per accaparrarsi i favori del pubblico: la musica popolare e folkloristica delle città che visitano durante il tour. Il 26 ottobre, durante la data milanese del Progressive Nation Tour di cui i Dream Theater erano gli headliner (con Opeth, Bigelf e Unexpect come band di supporto), il tastierista Jordan Rudess, in mezzo al suo lungo e roboante assolo, ha abbozzato una cover decisamente particolare. Trattasi di Oh mia bela Madunina, canzone popolare degli anni Trenta e inno per eccellenza del capoluogo lombardo. Una semplice melodia in grado di unire le folle più di qualsiasi altro anthem mai scritto nella storia del rock, e con un effetto comprensibilmente esilarante!

Anche nelle successive date italiane l’assolo di tastiere è servito per accennare altre canzoni di analoga caratura: il giorno dopo, al Palalottomatica di Roma, Rudess ha eseguito una strofa di La società dei magnaccioni (“Ma che ce frega, ma che ce importa…”), mentre il 29 ottobre a Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna) si è cimentato in una breve rivisitazione di Romagna mia! Non mi è invece giunta voce di analoghi tributi nella data di Conegliano Veneto (Treviso), ed è un vero peccato: ve le immaginate centinaia di persone vestite di nerissime t-shirt e borchie d’ogni tipo intonare tutti in coro “Il Piave mormorò: ‘Non passa lo straniero’…”?

A questo punto vi posto tutto quello che sono riuscito a trovare in proposito. Scegliete voi tra Oh mia bela Madunina (i primissimi secondi sono sfuggiti, e quindi la canzone inizia al verso “tì te dòminet Milan”), La società dei magnaccioni (che inizia dopo una ventina di secondi) e Romagna mia (che parte da 0:49). E mi raccomando: cantate senza ritegno, anche se siete in ufficio!

In part 1 of this series, we saw that the Galatian believers were on the verge of defecting (μετατίθεσθε) from the gospel of the grace of Christ (χάριτι Χριστοῦ) unto a false gospel and put themselves in the hands of those who desire to pervert/distort (μεταστρέψαι) the gospel message. From Acts 15 and the rest of the Galatian epistle, we know that this false gospel is one that would have men find the beginning of their justification in the grace and merit of Christ, but to complete that justification by work and merit of man.

This “other” gospel is none other than the false gospel of Rome. According to the Roman religion, the guilt and punishment for sin are expiated in baptism. From that time forth, sins may be forgiven by use of the church sacraments, but the temporal punishments are yet to be discharged. These punishments must be discharged in life by the work of penance, or after death by suffering in purgatory.

GRACE AND FAITH NECESSARY

In the roman system, justification is in Christ, and by faith and grace. Faith and grace are absolutely necessary (but not sufficient). This “justification” is “in Christ” in the sense that Christ died for sins, Christ’s nature is infused into the initiate in baptism, and in that Christ is received in the Eucharist. This “justification” is by grace in that God has graciously provided the church with the gracious means to dispense grace. And this “justification” is by faith in that faith must be mixed with work for it to be effectual.

The difference between the Roman system and the justification as set forth in the Bible are that: the Bible teaches that justification is the free act of God’s grace whereby he pardons sinners – in other words, it is a judicial act, not a process. True grace is based, from beginning to end, on the merits of Christ imputed to believers ALONE. It is an act of God’s free grace ALONE, apart from any ability of man to cooperate. Finally, it is received by faith ALONE. This is not to say that the Spirit of God does not produce fruit in the believer, He necessarily does. It is to say, that the fruit of justification is not the grounds of justification.

A few examples from the counter-gospel Council of Trent will underscore the differences:

CANON IX.-If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema.

CANON XII.-If any one saith, that justifying faith is nothing else but confidence in the divine mercy which remits sins for Christ’s sake; or, that this confidence alone is that whereby we are justified; let him be anathema.

CANON XIV.-If any one saith, that man is truly absolved from his sins and justified, because that he assuredly believed himself absolved and justified; or, that no one is truly justified but he who believes himself justified; and that, by this faith alone, absolution and justification are effected; let him be anathema.

CANON XXIV.-If any one saith, that the justice received is not preserved and also increased before God through good works; but that the said works are merely the fruits and signs of Justification obtained, but not a cause of the increase thereof; let him be anathema.

CANON XXX.-If any one saith, that, after the grace of Justification has been received, to every penitent sinner the guilt is remitted, and the debt of eternal punishment is blotted out in such wise, that there remains not any debt of temporal punishment to be discharged either in this world, or in the next in Purgatory, before the entrance to the kingdom of heaven can be opened (to him); let him be anathema.

GRACE AND FAITH SUFFICIENT?

In the next post we’ll examine this “other” gospel in the light of scripture and compare these teachings with those of true Biblical Protestant doctrine, where in contrast, God’s saving grace and gift of faith are not only necessary, but are sufficient.

American culture is predicated upon the freedom of  religious practice and the pursuit of happiness. It is a country driven by secular dreams where the practice of religion is just part or not of every day life.

Muslim culture is predicated upon the Muslim religion  and all its tenets first. Freedom of thought is not an option. Modesty and  submission are the norm of daily life. A good Muslim  is a person that lives by the Laws of the Koran. Anyone else is an infidel .

What Americans need to do is familiarize  and educate themselves on what it means to be a Muslim.  There are about 7 million Muslims living  in the United Sates. They know all there is know about us. I would venture to say that more than 85% of Americans know nothing about Muslims, even though there are so many in this country.

The USA represents exactly what Muslims oppose. Freedom of expression, freedom to choose whatever lifestyle we want for ourselves.  These freedoms are an anathema to the average Muslim living anywhere in the world, even to those living here in America.  They do enjoy equality here, something not known in most Muslim countries.  Muslims here are blessed like any other immigrant in having the freedom to prosper and live in peace.  But to the Muslim, such concepts short wire their fuse – even to those that live here and enjoy these very benefits.  The Muslims believe they will witness our demise and see their ascendency to world supremacy and domination.  They are not too far from that goal; 1 in every 5 humans on this earth, is a Muslim.

Muslims world-wide  are united by the Koran and the practice of its tenets.  A  good Muslim lives his life, as a Muslim first , and then as a man.  It is a people driven  and ominously directed by the  pursuits of zealot adherents.  They see Americans as spoiled, naive, hypocritical, and yes, uneducated and unrefined.  We are the Infidels living in the twilight.  They are simply offended by our permissive  lifestyle.  Speak to any Muslim and you will walk away feeling their disdain.  It is what it is.  No right, no wrong.  It just is.

Tas man lika atcerēties pirmo sniegu Rīgā. Tas vēl bija oktobra vidus, varbūt sākums, un es biju pie Ievas. Un, lai gan tā ir viena no mājīgākajām vietām pasaulē, gulēt es aizgāju nedaudz vēlāk nekā laicīgi, kas priekš manis būtu mazliet pēc 24.oo. Piebildīšu, ka, varbūt, tikai kaķi un zivtiņas sekoja manam paraugpiemēram.  Un no rīta es, protams, pamodos daudz pārāk laicīgi pat darbadienai, tāpēc spītīgi centos atkal aizmigt, un tieši tad, kad man jau tas bija gandrīz izdevies, kāds ļoti pārlaimīgā balsī sāka saukt : “Celies! Celies augšā! Tev tas ir obligāti jāredz!” Un es pilnīgi pārliecināta, ka redzēšu kaut ko satriecošu, piemērm, kā mājas murrājošā saimniece Nika, tā vietā, lai, kā parasti, ar šņācienu atbildētu uz katru mazā, rudā spalvu kamoliņa mēģinājumu sadraudzēties, būs atļāvusi viņam gulēt blakus, un nu viņi abi mīlīgi laizīs viens otru. Nē, tā vietā Ievucis man ar sajūsmu rāda logu, kur skaistām, baltām pārslām atklājas rūgtā patiesība – zelta rudenim tūlīt pienāks gals un būs jāvelk tādi apavi, lai papēžus varētu nežēlīgi iedzīt tajā pļurā, kas darīsies uz Rīgas ielām pēc nepilna mēneša. Ātri ielīdu atpakaļ gultā un nogulēju vēl ļoti, ļoti ilgi.

Es nezinu kāpēc tik ļauni tobrīd nodomāju, jo skats pa logu torīt tiešām bija debišķīgs… Es laikam šonakt to visu rakstu vairāk aiz garlaicības, nekā lai neaizmirstu.

Tad ir vēl kas svarīgs, ko derētu neaizmirst. Dažkārt, precīzak, pēdējajā laikā,  es daru vienu pilnīgi neadekvātu (:D) lietu – neskatoties uz to vai ārā ir tumšs vai gaišs, palienu zem segas, ielieku austiņas un paklausos Anathem’u. After the Apostle Paul delivers his salutation, he dives right into the heart of matter – the urgent need for which he was compelled to write – the Gospel was in crisis.  It seems that some Galatian believers were on the verge of apostasy, by deserting the true faith and being deceived by “another” gospel.  Which, by the way, he is quick to explain is not gospel at all.

Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (verse 7)

He then pronounces an apostolic anathema upon anyone who preaches “any other gospel” than “the grace of Christ.”

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.  (verses 8-9)

The word “accursed” used the KJV quotations in verses 8 and 9 above are translations of the Greek word ἀνάθεμα.  This word is simply transliterated into English in the  following verse from I Cor 16, which demonstrates the full force of the word.

If any man loveth not the Lord, let him be anathema. Maranatha.
(1 Cor 16:22, ASV)

The Greek word ἀνάθεμα, in the NT, conveys the meaning of being cursed from God and reserved unto destruction.  In the LXX, it is the Greek word chosen to render the Hebrew word cherem, as in the following.

The proper understanding of the word anathema is important because it serves as a sobering warning to those that would pervert the Gospel of Grace. Regarding perversions of the Gospel of Grace, the Roman Counter-Reformation council – The Council of Trent – an extremely important and pivitol landmark in cannonizing Rome’s Middle Age heresies, pronounces anathema no less than 31 times in it’s Justification Cannons.

As Rome tries to syphon apostate “protestant christians” from liberal denominations, it has the difficult task of whitewashing these embarrassing cannons of Roman doctrine. Consider the subtlety of the following Roman apologetic, in light of the Apostle’s warning!

For the first time ever, I actually bought an album without pirating it first to make sure it doesn’t suck. And here it is in delicious 320 KB/s MP3s.

This album is a live mostly acoustic collaboration between two wonderful musicians, Anneke van Giersbergen (Agua de Annique, ex The Gathering) and Danny Cavanagh (Anathema). All three of those bands are quite awesome, so I figured that this would be REALLY AWESOME with the two of them working together. And I’m not disappointed, it was money well spent.

The album opens with, a Massive Attack cover? If I didn’t read the track list that would really have surprised me. And it’s a pretty damned good cover as well (Better than the original I’d say). In fact I’d go as far to say that I love every single song on this album more than the original, and that’s not just me being blinded by “fanboyism”. Well, every song except for the song that closes the album, Jolene. The Me First and the Gimme Gimmes’ cover of that song is amazing. The highlight of the album would have to be A Natural Disaster. It’s a billion times better than the version from the Anathema album of the same name.

I’m convinced that this duo could cover Brokencyde and it would sound good. This is about as good as a live album can be. The production quality is great (There isn’t even any annoying noise from the audience!) It will be a fine addition to your ever growing collection of illegally acquired music. This thing had to be shipped over the Netherlands just for you. You better like it, and if you do, buy it.“

Me I got the album kinda track by track, just some credits, I wasn’t used to listen to Anathema, but hmm…how to say it, figuring out my Riddle, makes me learn know & reach for things I’s neva used to do before…frankly I luv’d Tear Drops ,As ya all know its a Massive Attack song, was a gud cover…Gud acoustic tones& vocals…Same goes to My b’luv’d “One Last GudBye”…nice rework…ya must try it too…this track is hilarious no matta how&when its played…To Me “Flying” remains the best one, really it chills…In the end, try it ya all gonna enjoy it…cool sounds I know sad a little bit, but remember I said its My sweet November…Enjoy!

Anneke Van Giersbergen & Danny Cavanagh – In Parallel

«Eh?!? I Paradise Lost sono tornati a fare metal? E da quando? Però potevano anche avvertirmi…». Questa è stata la mia reazione dopo i primi minuti dell’ascolto di “Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us”, l’ultimo disco in studio dello storico five-piece albionico, uscito in Italia il 28 settembre per Century Media.

La premessa autobiografica, come avrete intuito, è d’obbligo. Ho conosciuto i Paradise Lost grazie a “Sgrang!” (prodigiosa trasmissione metal della compianta Videomusic/Tmc2) ai tempi di “One Second”, ma allora la mia canzone preferita era The Last Time, tratta dal precedente nonché fondamentale “Draconian Times”, che non a caso suono ancora oggi con i miei Elevation. Se già allora inclinavo più verso il loro passato che verso il loro presente, dopo l’uscita di dischi decisamente controversi come “Host” (1999) e “Believe in Nothing” (2001), e in concomitanza con il mio periodo doom, ho ripiegato definitivamente sui loro gloriosi esordi: il debut album “Lost Paradise” non è uscito dal mio lettore cd se non a svariate settimane dall’acquisto.

Accompagnato da Fratello Corvo, sono poi andato a vederli dal vivo nella primavera del 2003, e in questa data ho avuto modo di conoscere numerosi altri brani, incluse alcune hit del loro periodo synthrock. Così, troppo impegnato nel mio compito di riscoperta dei primi album, e in quello ancor più arduo di metabolizzare e trovare il lato positivo nel corso più recente, mi sono del tutto astenuto dall’ascoltare i dischi successivi. Finché non ho deciso di tornare a vederli (il 6 dicembre all’Alcatraz di Milano), e a quel punto mi sono riproposto di acquistare per lo meno l’ultimo album per prepararmi alla data. Il risultato: una sorpresa del tutto inaspettata.

Il gothic metal, così come lo conosciamo, è un’invenzione dei Paradise Lost: e questo, signori, è gothic metal coi fiocchi. In questi solchi siamo distanti anni luce dal dark rock caldo e accattivante di “One Second” e dagli esperimenti synthpop (più o meno riusciti) in stile “gloriosi anni Ottanta”, che ammiccavano così morbosamente ai Depeche Mode che questi ultimi si voltavano infastiditi. Quest’album, si è detto da più parti, rappresenta un compiuto ritorno alle radici. Nick Holmes e soci s’infurierebbero a sentirne parlare in questo modo, nondimeno l’affermazione è legittima: a differenza, per fare un esempio, degli Anathema, che sono partiti facendo doom/death e hanno fedelmente seguito un percorso di ammorbidimento del sound, coerente fino all’inverosimile, nel caso dei Paradise Lost si è avuta la sensazione di un’improvvisa inversione a U, di uno scarto molto brusco tra “Symbol of Life” e il successivo album omonimo, che è stato generalmente interpretato come un tentativo di riapprodare a un passato sicuro, di misurarsi con formule già sperimentate, a seguito di un’evidente caduta in disgrazia presso pubblico e critica.

A mio avviso, però, non si tratta nemmeno di questo. Non del tutto, perlomeno. Mi sembra invece di notare come la premiata ditta Holmes-Mackintosh sia stata baciata da una nuova vena compositiva, che riprende gli stilemi della vecchia scuola inglese e li reinterpreta alla luce di esperienze e sonorità più moderne. Il sound risulta infatti impreziosito da un ampio spettro di suggestioni eterogenee – dal power al death melodico, dal thrash al nu metal – che risultano però così ben amalgamate da essere sì riconoscibili ma non individuabili con chiarezza. Non è il gothic facile, monotono e annacquato di molti, ma un gothic complesso, non sempre immediato, ricco di sfaccettature, con growl e cantate più limpide, accelerazioni e cambi di tempo, repentini scatti rabbiosi e improvvisi passaggi melodici, soffusi e struggenti. Il gothic metal come dovrebbe essere nel 2009.

A un songwriting particolarmente ispirato si assommano l’impiego sinora inedito delle chitarre a 7 corde e l’abile zampino del produttore Jens Bogren (già alla console per Opeth, Amon Amarth e Katatonia), che ha reso pieno servizio alla corposità del songwriting senza disdegnare spunti più “radio-friendly”, in particolar modo negli effetti applicati alla voce, che talvolta suona un po’ leccata ma efficace. Il suono è massiccio, cupo, vibrante, e la chitarra torna finalmente a ricoprire un ruolo centrale nell’equilibrio sonoro dell’album, mentre l’impiego delle tastiere è ormai ridotto al lumicino.

L’album si apre su As Horizons End, maestoso capolavoro di cupezza indescrivibile, ed è un attacco difficilmente dimenticabile. L’impressione ricorrente che ho nei primi secondi di ascolto è quella di un’immensa voragine che si apre rabbiosa nella terra arida, e una tetra fortezza fiammeggiante (o, in alternativa, la Torre di Babele di Brueghel) che ne emerge, stagliandosi minacciosa nell’inquietante cielo nero pece. Tutto questo senza neanche ricorrere a sostanze allucinogene! La voce di Nick Holmes è aggressiva ai limiti del growl, e quando attacca cantando «To remain pessimistic found in this hour of distress…» possiamo solo immaginare da quale straziante dolore spirituale sia ancora una volta prostrato. Poi arriva il ritornello, con quella semplice melodia che ti spacca il cuore in due, solo per piantare al suo interno i semi della disperazione. In mezzo a cotanta bellezza, spicca anche un break molto suggestivo, arpeggiato e meditativo, che rende il brano un’autentica delizia.

Più ruvida la successiva I Remain, che si apre su uno dei celebri arabeschi di Greg Mackintosh (quelle specie di vie di mezzo tra un lick e un solo, che se ne vanno mulinando nell’aria apparentemente irrispettose delle scale che ne regolano l’armonia) e rende particolarmente evidente il sostrato death sul quale si muove il five-piece, pur regalando momenti d’intenso lirismo. First Light ha invece una struttura piuttosto semplice e qualche passaggio orchestrale, abbinato a un ritornello un po’ “leccaculo” (ma assolutamente godibile) che potrebbe far gola, per motivi diversi, sia ai Dark Tranquillity sia ai Linkin Park, e questo fa pensare.

Frailty è un brano che riporta alla mente l’illustre passato della band, e che colpisce per le sue validissime soluzioni ritmiche e melodiche, in particolare la sua capacità di cambiare le carte in tavola ogni venti-trenta secondi circa e farla sembrare la cosa più naturale del mondo (perlomeno dopo un paio di ascolti). Dopo mezzo minuto quasi tranquillo e malinconico, parte un’inattesa cavalcata simil-power, che poi si trasforma in un morboso falso terzinato, che a sua volta si rimodifica… insomma, ascoltatela e poi ne riparliamo. Un brano di sfogo e di potenza, complesso e non eccessivamente emotivo. Tutto il contrario della successiva title-track, più lineare e immediata nella sua eterea disperazione, con un indimenticabile ritornello strappalacrime e un’atmosfera da malinconiche brughiere immerse in una tenue foschia… Un autentico capolavoro, e vi assicuro che non esagero.

L’incipit quasi gregoriano di The Rise of Denial prelude a un altro dei brani più belli del disco, cattivo, moderno e tirato, con un tema coinvolgente, un ostinato batteria-basso-chitarra che rende le due strofe particolarmente taglienti, e un ritornello che sembra cantato da James Hetfield. Tutto sommato, però, il virtuale “lato B” di questo disco risulta un po’ più debole per quanto riguarda l’ispirazione. Living with Scars riporta alla violenza dei primissimi dischi e ha un paio di spunti lodevoli, ma non lascia particolarmente il segno, mentre la successiva Last Regret spinge ulteriormente il pedale del freno per raggiungere la tipica lentezza del doom, ma non il suo funereo fascino. È semplice come la title-track ma, non avendo un analogo carico di disperazione, lascia l’ascoltatore un po’ più freddo: in definitiva, un brano che avrebbe potuto scrivere chiunque, inclusi i Paradise Lost di qualche anno fa. Qualche perplessità è suscitata anche da Universal Dream, che si distacca dalla media stilistica dell’album per flirtare un po’ troppo con thrash e affini, senza però l’afflato decadente e destabilizzante di una Your Shameful Heaven dei My Dying Bride.

Ma questi piccoli peccati originali vengono rimessi in extremis dalla conclusiva In Truth, lugubre processione che gioca sulle alternanze tra 3/4 e 4/4 e che nella strofa chiama in causa, questa volta a buon diritto, i Depeche Mode. Negli ultimi solchi sembra di vedere la fortezza di cui parlavo all’inizio riaffondare nella stessa dorsale di dolore dal quale era emersa all’inizio del disco. Ma nonostante le molte lacrime la terra è ancora arida… e la ferita sarà mai sanata?

La versione deluxe contiene anche la bonus track Cardinal Zero e le versioni orchestrali di Last Regret e della title-track, che credo valga la pena di ascoltare. Un’ultima nota frivola per gli appassionati di arte e antichità, o anche solo del buon gusto: l’artwork non è niente male. In copertina campeggia un’incisione di Holbein il Giovane, tratta dalla serie della Danza Macabra, mentre all’interno del booklet sono riprodotte la xilografia dei Quattro Cavalieri di Albrecht Dürer oltre a un’illustrazione tratta dalla Cronaca di Norimberga. Ma buona parte del design rimanda alle prime stampe del Cinquecento, come la disposizione delle immagini, e nella pagina centrale la band figura in una posa neogotica non disdicevole. Se siete indecisi tra acquistarlo e scaricarlo, spero di avervi influenzato.

Naturalmente vado ora a proporvi l’unico videoclip promozionale finora uscito in supporto di quest’album: quello di Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us. Molti hanno commentato questo clip con entusiasmo, sottolineandone l’indiscutibile intensità, ma a dire la verità, dopo l’iniziale senso di angoscia, io mi sono francamente annoiato e anche un po’ irritato. Ma non voglio rovinarvi lo spettacolo – al massimo, ne riparliamo nei commenti…

Aujourd’hui je vais vous parler d’un de mes groupes favoris (non, non, ne vous couvrez pas encore les oreilles, c’est calme) : Anathema.

Fondé en 1980 et des poussières, Anathema est au départ un groupe de doom-death (dénomination barbare que vous comprendrez bientôt, pour le moment “cris” et “rythmiques pesantes” sont la meilleure indication). Parmi les membres du groupe : les frères Danny et Vinnie Cavanagh ( au chant et à  la guitare), le bassiste originel (Ducan Patterson) c’est Jamie Cavanagh qui assure actuellement la basse, John Douglas : le pain (euh pardon le batteur) et le claviériste Les Smith viennent compléter le sandwiche. Et parfois la douce Lee vient prêter sa voix.

Voilà pour les présentations, pour ce qui est de la discographie et du style on peut dire que le style de Anathema a énormément évolué. Du doom-death des débuts on passe au rock alternatif voire au rock progressif ou atmosphérique. On passe donc d’un chant guttural crié à un chant clair … chanté, évidemment; et de rythmiques pesantes et saturées à des rythmiques plus calmes et des jolies mélodies. Ceci dit, on n’en est pas encore à la pop joyeuse où le monde est beau et gentil.

Un bref survol de leur discographie, première période :

The Cresfallen : EP, Serenades, The Silent Enigma, Pentecost III EP, Eternity.

Sur cette période, j’avoue que je n’ai pas grand chose de constructif à apporter, c’est pas vraiment les chansons de Anathema que je préfère, mais s’il y en a un à retenir c’est certainement le plus récent Eternity, avec l’excellent Angelica.

On arrive (enfin !) à la seconde période du groupe : les chants se calment, les rythmiques évoluent, on peut noter une apparition de l’électronique sur certains albums. Beaucoup de fans n’apprécient pas ce changement (radical), mais la transition se fait en douceur avec quatre albums. Il faut quand même noter que depuis 2004 (et la faillite de leur label Music For Nations) l’avenir de Anathema a été très incertain, même si les concerts se poursuivent, il est désormais très rare de voir le groupe au complet et on attends encore un album (qui aurait dû sortir il y a un moment déjà).

Dans cette période :

Dans l’ordre : Alternative 4, Judgement, A Fine Day To Exit, A Natural Disaster.

Bon, déjà premier constat à faire, l’artwork des pochettes est nettement plus travaillé (et plus classe). Et que dire sur le son …?

Alternative 4 a été mon premier album d’Anathema. Un jour chez un ami, j’ai écouté une des chansons titres de cet album (l’excellent Fragile Dreams) et là, paf, le coup de foudre. Enfin si ça existe musicalement parlant. Donc, je ne suis probablement pas très objective. On dit de cet album que c’est “le plus mauvais d’Anathema”, ce à quoi, narquoise, je ne peux que rétorquer que le groupe joue les 3/4 des chansons de cet album en concert…

Judgement est assez marqué niveau rythmique, et on se souvient surtout d’une chanson en particulier. One Last Goodbye, bon , évidemment le titre dit tout, et la chanson est pas franchement joyeuse. Je dois dire qu’elle fait partie des chansons “soundtracks de vie”, mais je vais vous épargner les détails.

On arrive à A Fine Day To Exit, vraiment pas mon album préféré. Mais il y a l’excellentissime chanson Temporary Peace dessus, alors ,magnanime, je pardonne.

Et enfin A Natural Disaster, qui reste après Alternative 4 mon deuxième album favori. J’ai du mal à trouver une chanson que je n’aime pas sur cet album, les textes sont comme toujours fouillés, les rythmiques chouettes, et il y a vraiment une énergie très particulière dans cet album.

Pour être vraiment complète, il faut aussi que j’avoue qu’il y a un album sorti tout récemment, Hindsight, mais je dois dire que “ça compte pas”, puisqu’il s’agit de reprises semi-acoustiques de leurs chansons les plus connues. Une sorte de best of. Je suis assez partagée sur la question puisque certaines chansons rendent ultra bien, mais il y a quand même de grosses monstruosités techniques (de la guitare “acoustique” qui sonne très électronique quand même…) sur la fin de l’album.

Mais que ça ne vous empêche pas d’aller cultiver vos oreilles !

Oh et par ailleurs, j’ai dû oublier de le mentionner, mais ils sont britanniques ces petits, donc le chant se fait avec un accent tout à fait délicieux ! Et si vous avez aimé My Dying Bride, Anathema ne peut que vous plaire !
