I think I’m ready to begin reading for the public, and charging for my readings, but I’m

I think I’m ready to begin reading for the public, and charging for my readings, but I’m not sure. So I decided to ask the cards.

Question: Am I ready to read for the public and charge for my readings?

I drew 3 cards for my answer.

Anchor + Cross + Clouds

Well, I guess the message is pretty clear that I’m ready yet. Anchor represents my confidence, and Cross represents my faith, and Clouds shows that both are uncertain. I don’t have enough confidence and faith in myself yet, so I’m not ready.

Next I asked the card if I will ever be ready to read professionally, and here’s what I got:

Whips + Lily + Clouds

Ugh! Clouds again! That means my answer is ‘doubtful.’ Whips + Lily represents active experience, and Clouds shows that my experience is shaky. I’ll take that to mean I need more practice reading for friends and family in order to acquire the necessary active experience before I’ll be ready to go pro.

That’s not what I was hoping to see, but it’s good advice and it makes sense.

If I were graduating this December, I would obviously start applying for jobs in the journalism field. But, where would I fit into this new media ecosystem? That’s the question.

I’m pretty sure I would search for a conventional broadcast news job even though the field is drastically changing. I’m going to school for broadcast journalism, so having a job in television or doing video work online would be ideal. I would be content with anything from an entry level position to an on-air anchor position. It’s so hard to find a job in the field today, so I figure anything is better than nothing!

Also, I would experiment with all of the hype of “hyper local”. Maybe getting involved with a site like Patch.com would be an interesting venture to explore. That is, until, my restructuring of journalism took effect! Now, it’s probably never going to happen, but here’s my pitch to change the journalism industry as we know it today:

“Where are you going?”

Pa asked me as I headed out. A simple question, to which the simple answer was: “Out driving to my friend’s house.”

To which the alternative answer is: I don’t know. I don’t know where I am going. The boat is drifting now. It’s not rudderless. There is a rudder. It’s just not being used right now.

To be honest, the boat is not even drifting anymore. I dropped anchor. It’s not so bad. My heart feels leaden, but I could be somewhere worse. At least here I have some cash coming in and my own writing. Good friends, family close at hand, and love. I will stay here for a while. Take stock. Listen and breathe deeply. I will still dream and still wish and still hope. Chart the currents and the stars. Evaluate the horizons.

And I will wait, but not for long. When the voice calls, I will weigh anchor. Perhaps I will be purposeful, using the rudder to steer myself determinedly. More so, I feel, I will let my little vessel drift. It may horrify some, still others will relate. To drift, at the current’s whim.

Where are you going? I don’t think I will ever know. For now, Pa, I go nowhere. I am here, in my spot, staying still and biding until anchor’s away.

Over the last few years I have definitely seen a rise in the number of small boutique hotels. Probab

Over the last few years I have definitely seen a rise in the number of small boutique hotels. Probably because I entered the hotel industry and became more aware, or maybe the trend is such that small boutique is now the vogue?

In London, I believe that Kit Kemp definitely made an impact on the genre of boutique style hotels, as did Anouska Hempel. They both created fantastic hotels, which felt like a home away from home, but with that touch of glamour and all the attention you require and of course deserve! Both very different in style, but each very intimate and luxurious.

Hempel styles the hotel in a very minimalistic design, using “the elegance of simplicity” (as stated on the hotel website). The entrance is very warm and welcoming with carefully selected pieces, all of which are very carefully placed. Walking into the rooms at the Hempel Hotel one does not feel like touching anything; as beautiful as everything is it’s almost a museum like style. Everything looks so perfect and set in its place, it feels like a great dishonour to the designer to move things out of place.

Everything in its place...and all that order!

Image from the Hempel Hotel website.

On the contrary Kemp’s style is more homily and involves lots of different pieces being almost effortlessly put together. For me, walking into a Firmdale hotel feels like going to a well-travelled aunt’s home. There are fascinating artefacts, books and fabrics everywhere. Clearly all is very well thought out and designed, from which light to place the wing chair and desk under to what fabric and old china plate can sit together. However, even though the interiors are given all that consideration there is not that feeling of being staged. Clearly I am a fan of Firmdale, but I am afraid of the group churning out another “Soho”, or “Pelham”. This would, in my opinion, defeat Firmdale’s aim of exclusivity.

Back in aunty’s living room!

Aunty’s wall hanging from the East, but that chair is quite Gentleman’s club...Oooh naughty aunty!!

Images from the Firmdale website.

So boutique hotels, as most other hotels, obviously vary in style. But what makes a hotel boutique? Is it just the design? The attention to detail? The luxury? In my opinion it is probably a combination of all these, plus a small size helps with the intimacy and also the lack of branding. Although on the branding topic there are probably various views. Most hotel groups seem to put their stamp on their property in some way; either by using the similar signage, having the magazines in a certain order on the desk or just having a “style”. However, to keep it boutique and unique, I really think the branding, or that stamp, is not required. This I really believe about the Fox and Anchor; run by the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin group it is a pub with rooms, but I think it can definitely be classified under the boutique hotel category. However, in my opinion the originality of the hotel is let down, not by the design, which is brilliantly thought out and well planned, from door handle to skirting finish, but by the branding. It is all too much like a mini Malmaison or Hotel du Vin; from the similar font on the food menus to the same roll top baths in bedrooms. In my opinion the property should have been standalone and it really would have made even more of a statement, but then these are small details not noticed by many. Nevertheless it is a well designed pub with rooms, a complete transformation from the original building thanks to the in house interior design team in charge! The rooms are all named after areas around the City and with the nearby meat market in mind. Artwork was especially selected to complement each room, so once again a lot of thought went into every detail.

Somewhere warm and cosy and VERY close by, after all those pints!

Image from the Fox and Anchor website.

The opposite to the Fox and Anchor with branding is a very small hotel I only discovered last week – 40 Winks. The branding here is non- existent and unlike most hotels nowadays (especially in London) there are not even televisions in the room; so really going back to what hotel rooms are for!! This is truly an individual boutique hotel. Designed by David Carter, this hotel has a great collection of diverse objects and has a very intimate feel. This is most probably due to only two bedrooms being available for occupancy. It is an old townhouse, restored fully to ensure that its true grace is flaunted. The collection of furniture has been carefully selected and placed to enhance the beauty of each room and of the furniture itself. The whole style is very bohemian, well suited with being situated in the artsy end of East London.

In front of the looking glass…Do I look beautiful dear? Of course!

All working well together.

Images from the 40 Winks website.

So boutique hotels are definitely all the rage now and confidently for the future, but hopefully they won’t turn into “another” one of those hotels and they will be kept unique and most importantly …boutique!

Daily Draw November 22nd, 2009

I got my Lenormand deck printed and trimmed and I’m just waiting for the collage on the tuckbox to press and dry. However, it’s a perfect day to try it out. I wrote up a one-page explanatory sheet with some of my interpretations and card symbolism to go with the deck. I call it The Illustrative Lenormand Oracle.

I find it embarrassing that I’ve only used Lenormand cards for one-card draws, so it might take a while to figure things out doing 3-card draws. I generally find that fewer cards allows greater impact of the message.

ANCHOR; MICE; CHILD

And I thought mice were such nice little creatures.

Work, stability and hope from the Anchor. I like the idea of home port and security with this card as indicated by the engraving I used for the background. The Mice can indicate a thief, loss, false friends or errors, and the Child is one of my favourites, I LOVE this little girl I found in my clip art collection. She’s pointing and asking questions and bursting with enthusiasm. She’s also a bit naive, so she’d better watch out for those dastardly mice and their nibbling.

I take this to mean that work can be an anchor and not to worry about people who disturb you, but keep the channel of joy open and concentrate on that. I do feel the loss of my job still after over four years, it sometimes nibbles at me, but I feel much better at home doing my own work, secure and not dealing with unethical people, but being able to feel joy and curiosity again.

I am working on some bookbinding today while my two tuckboxes dry. It’s good to have work set out to do, that’s a very stable thing when you work from home.

My brother got married last weekend and I thought I’d share a couple shots from my contribution to the decorations: creating numbers for each of the tables. I worked like mad over the past few weeks, drawing and inking each one with a Sailor Jerry-inspired anchor and rope to reflect their love of tattoos. It was a big project (22 tables!) and I knew going in that it would take a lot of time, but I really wanted to make them special, so ambition won out over practicality (Did I really have 12 hours of free time to spend hunched over the kitchen table inking rope numbers? Well, apparently I can make the time.). Also, I hadn’t really drawn much of anything, let alone pulled out my ink and or a paintbrush, in ages! It was a nice change of pace from the endless sewing of puppets, as much as I do love my felt.

My (new) sister-in-law sent me a photo of their kitchen wall where they’ve decided to display a collection of a few of the numbers. I’m glad they’ve found a good home.

Also! I also have to include a photo of the amazing zombie-themed wedding cake. They described it to me in advance, but nothing can truly prepare you for food-coloring bloody handprints.

Among the many brands promoted by versatile actress Kajol- Anchor toothpaste, Yakult health drink, Whirlpool, Alpenliebe are a few names. Recently she has been chosen brand ambassador for Oil Of Olay. On this media persons had a brand talk with the actress.

Says Kajol, “Whenever I endorse a brand, I look into what it is all about, whether it is stable, reliable. I don’t know if I’ve fool-proofed it, but I do certainly look into these aspects.”

When asked that what she looks in a brand before deciding to promote it, she answered, “I look for reliability. It’s important that I know that the product I’m promoting is worth it. I won’t promote something I don’t believe in, or will harm someone or something in any way.”

Unlike other actresses, she is also comfortable playing a mother to 8-10-year-old kids in commercials. She says, “I always wanted kids. I wanted a baby ever since I was three or something. Kids are a natural part of life.”

Yes, I know it is very hard to believe but CNN is a puppet slave to the government and the New World Order. They are programming us into thinking that the economy is doing a lot better and they are programming us to think that Obama is not going to ban our guns and change the Constitution to fit their agenda! It is time to take a stand against CNN and this is the day to do it.

Go to CNN’s website and contact them and let them know that you will not be watching their puppet slave network ever again! We cannot allow these lizard people working at CNN to get away with this and the best action is to never watch their channel ever again. Make certain that you contact them as quickly as possible and make sure that you tell all of your friends that CNN sucks!

Dead Dolphin Direct was climbed on 9th October 2009 by Nigel (seconded by james!). The route takes a direct line to the route climbed by Pete and James about 4 years ago. The original line climbed the overhanging corner up the slab and belayed from a ut key and mud bollard! The new line takes the impressive overhang following the obvious line of holds onto the slab above. The Slab was as impressively loose as the first ascent and Nigel did well to find a handful of throwaway placement to keep the rope running in a nice line!

Graded at HVS 5a the grading was given for the start which was a great boulder problem…. the HVS for the loose rock above. Nigel has his first tick and although not a 3 star classic a new route has been claimed.

well done Nigel

After an uncharacteristic mid-week dry spell (An Education was totally worth it), I *ahem* hopped back on the beer train with a couple of drinks at a pot luck. The first was Anchor Steam, which was mildly disappointing when not poured into a glass. It improved as it warmed up in my hand, but still wasn’t as lovely as it is when it can breathe a bit more. Then a Southern Tier IPA, which was tasting a lot like grapefruit today.

There are always positives and negatives when drinking out of bottles. On one hand, it can be a bit of a conversation piece at parties when someone sees you drinking a bottle of the oddly shaped Anchor Steam. (However, do not take this as an invitation to start lecturing on the history of steam beer.) Around non-beer geeks, it can also seem a bit poncey to need to pour your beer into a glass. At the same time, it’s not as enjoyable when you can’t really see or smell what you’re drinking. You really miss the aromas wafting up from the glass when you’re drinking straight from the bottle. (Doubt me? Try the same beer in the bottle vs. poured into a glass.) There probably is no happy middle ground.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies recovered more than $100,000 worth of stolen construction equipment and arrested seven men connected to the case. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies recovered more than $100,000 worth of stolen construction equipment and arrested seven men connected to the case. According to Captain George Bonnett, a sheriff’s office spokesman, the arrests were made last Thursday. Investigators received information from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office about a case they were working which led them to the Northshore. Detectives obtained a search warrant for a home in the 59000 block of Carroll Road. Police found seven men in the home, arrested and charged them with possession of stolen property, Bonnett said. Hundreds of counts are expected to be filed against the suspects. Bonnett said most of the equipment had been stolen from trailers on construction sites. Police said the following men were arrested: Juventino Trejo, 43; Gustavo Lucio, 37; Isidro Mendoza, 32; Juan A. Lopez, 23; Jose Lopez, 21; Alberto Lopez, 19, and Juan M. Lopez, 17. Trejo and Lucio were the only suspects in the country legally, Bonnett said. The remaining five men have immigration holds pending the outcome of a trial. The sheriff’s office said the arrests have cleared 12 burglary cases thus far and more are expected to be cleared. http://www.wwltv.com/local/northshore/stories/wwl011508khstolengear.26516b68.html

I love a good hunt. My recent obsession on days off (non-alcohol related ::gasp!::) was planning an itinerary of 10 or so different thrift shops or vintage/antique stores, driving throughout the greater Southland area, spending hours rifling through various used record bins. In the same vein, I’ve taken quite a fancy to frequenting small, privately owned, hole-in-the-wall liquor stores to see what pieces of gold can be found (alcoholically speaking.) For example, Riviera Liquor in Boyle Heights not only has a massive tequila selection, but also has a decent craft beer cooler. Amidst those dusty bottles, I’ve stumbled upon some ridiculous finds, the real steal being a magnum of ’05 Chimay Grande Reserve (Blue).

Another great find was a tip from fellow beer enthusiast, Greg. Off of Gaffey in San Pedro is Coolwater Liquor, another cozy liquor store with a pretty damn good stock of craft beer. I’ve found some equally ridiculous things here: 4yr. old batches of Aventinus Eisbock, ’06 Alesmith Decadence (Evil Dead Red), old bottles of Alesmith Horny Devil, and a couple sixers of ’06 Anchor Christmas (seen below).

So…just how good is this 3 year old blast from the past?

Heres a bit of backstory:

Anchor has been brewing “Our Special Ale” as part of their streamlined beerlist for decades now, the first batch originating in 1975, with each year featuring a new recipe, unique spice profile, and a different tree featured on the label. According to the brewers, bottles can be cellared for extended periods. I must admit, I highly doubted that a low gravity beer (usually 5-6%) had the preservative quality of say…the 11% Belgian Quadruppel mentioned above. Nevertheless, after cracking open said antiqued bottle of yesteryear, I truly was reminded of one the few things I enjoy about the Christmas season: spicy winter warmers.

I digress. Here are some notes…

The beer poured with decent carbonation, its shade that of poorly prepared espresso. A gossamer head remains, with a slight lacing of off-white head. The nose is unsurprisingly reminiscent of old ales: a cardboard-y staleness, Tawny Porto sweetness of dried fruits, and a hint of molasses smokiness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp, like an English-style bitter. An extremely layered palate emerges… at first some burnt Cranberry tartness grips, then releases to some mulling spices. A quick dusting of baking cocoa evolves seconds later into slight woody astringency, perhaps of water logged cedar or pine. Flecks of nutty baking spices prickle the surprisingly long lasting finish.

Not a bad brew, really… It serves as a great spicy kick in the ass – a liquid reminder that while this beach boy just spent a November day biking shirtless along the Strand in 86º heat, Winter/Fall/or-whatever-you-call-“cold”-in-LA is right around the corner.

In other words: this beer is good because it makes me want for sweater weather.
