I am in day 2 of my FIRST EVER trip to Asheville, NC. What a magical place! Right Brain thinking is alive and well here with art, galleries, beautiful shops, book stores, drums, cafe’s, chocolate, mountains and friendly people all coated with a spiritual awareness that resonnates from the ground up!

I drove blindly into the center of town and parked within the central commercial district. Look at the first card I picked out of the stack at a precious little store, “Write On”!

I could not believe the text on the card! Do you ever feel like her? Literally, getting into your right brain makes an instant, dramatic difference. You have room to think, to be…. Next I walked down the street and was accosted by some of my favorite things ever–those star shaped lanterns! Had to snap a pic:

Next, I popped into Terra Nostra Decor. They had these amazing chairs called POOFS that I would highly recommend (they come in small and large). I sat in one and confirmed the comfiness. But, on my way out, this chair caught my eye. This is what someone should buy for their meditation area. Doesn’t it just look Cleopatra and Buddha all rolled up in one!?!? Click on the image to go to terranostradecor.com–they ship anywhere (as a small biz owner I have to give them some PR!!!).

Next, I wandered up to Malaprops Book Store on Haywood St. www.malaprops.com. This is where I am going to have a book signing from noon-2p on October 17th! This store is so special. I met the owner, who was an obviously wise and wonderful spirit. Thank you for your store. After checking out with my 4 books–LOVE book stores and BOOKS, I proceeded on my visual feast of Asheville. Here is Malaprops. Come see me on Oct. 17th!

My next wonderful lstop was at Origami Ink. This store celebrates the Artist Within from all angles. You are swept up in new desires to write many letters, create beautiful art from found objects, paint, draw, gift….Lovely. I met Jonathan there. So sweet! I was really attracted to these painted and adorned antique, wooden birds. I tried to take a photo, but my camera died! Click on the image below to get to their site.

After a rondevous with old friends in Black Mountain and a pint of the Valdez Coffee brew at a local micro-brewery–so sorry I can’t remember the name right now (It was so cool–in the warehouse where the brewing happens!!!), we went to dinner and I got to tour Blue Spiral Gallery all by myself! This gallery is incredible! Here is a view as I ascended the stairs to the extensive upper level!

The only reason I was able to enter is that they were hosting a reception for Andie McDowell (who lives in Asheville–and looks GREAT btw! I saw her outside the gallery) after she introduced a movie next door at the Fine Arts Theater. “The Greatest Silence, Rape in the Congo” was the film she introduced. Andie is CREATING CHANGE in her world! Thank you for your example! Inside the gallery I also had the treat of seeing a friend’s artwork! Emily Leonard is one of my favorite artists. She is in Nashville, but her work is proudly displayed across the country. She painted a mural on a wall in our second Rumours Wine Bar. She is amazing. Go to www.emilyleonard.com. Here is an example of her work!

NOW, you all have an assignment from me to go visit an art gallery! It is so lovely to indulge in the beautiful visions and register your impressions and to what you are attracted. I had many savory moments last night in that gallery! Here are some of my favorites:

This is ceramic by artist Vicki Grant. Look at that crystal in the center, all the texture and subtle colors.

Below, “Where to…”

Where are you going? How are you getting there? Which boat would you hop into? These are all the thoughts that ran through my mind. Go to www.bluespiral1.com to peruse more! Tell them Whitney sent you.

The painting below is by artist Charles Ladson. His colors, unique combination of images and subject, and his obvious skill are a visual journey. The colors are, of course, so much more vibrant (yet still subtle) in person! I want one!!!

So, now I am sitting at City Bakery after indulging in the Melted Goat sandwich. It had roasted grapes on it, along with arugala and goat cheese. Yum! I have never had roasted grapes! I am anxious to get back out there. I have to make my next stop the French Broad Chocolate Lounge! Don’t hate me! Stay tuned for the exciting (I am sure it will be) conclusion to my Asheville trip. Thank you to all of these small businesses for creating such ambience in Asheville and for allwoing me to showcase the ART that is your business! Cheers! Whitney

Ah yes, Hudson Hawk. Rarely has a movie been so bitterly and savagely vilified, not only by critics,

Ah yes, Hudson Hawk. Rarely has a movie been so bitterly and savagely vilified, not only by critics, but even by many of the people involved in making it.

Richard E Grant, for example, who plays one of the main pair of villains alongside Sandra Bernhard, is scathing about the production in his book of published diaries, With Nails.

In fact, long before the film opened, in 1991, there were brutal reports in the press about problems on set, with suggestions that star and co-writer Bruce Willis – then at the height of his early-career fame thanks to the Moonlighting TV series and the first two Die Hard movies - was letting his ego run wild on set, with the film’s director Michael Lehmann (who was himself a hot property after making the acclaimed 1989 film Heathers) sidelined as a result.

It’s certainly true that the movie was one big vanity project for Willis and his pal and co-writer, musician Robert Kraft and that the film that emerged from the troubled shoot was somewhat uneven.

And yet, I’ve always had a soft spot for Hudson Hawk.

It’s far from perfect but no way on earth is it half as bad as the hatchet-job reviews that met the film’s original release would suggest. In fact, it’s very funny, if you can tune in to its off-the-wall humour.

Indeed, that wackyness - along with the fact that, whether it was warranted or not, Willis provided the Press with plenty of ammunition to let them take him down a peg or two after his meteoric rise to stardom – was a big part of the problem for the film. You see, it was marketed as a Die Hard-style action movie when, as anyone who has seen the film knows, it’s actually a surreal, slapstick comedy.

In fact, it’s almost Pythonesque at times. For example, at one point master thief Hudson Hawk (Willis) and his partner in crime Tommy “Five Tone” (Danny Aiello) jump out a upper-floor window to escape their pursuers and then we cut to them simply landing on chairs in the next scene.

Like I said, it’s certainly an uneven film. It’s funny, it’s hip and it’s pretty smart, dealing in a Da Vinci Code-style conspiracy long before Dan Brown made such a thing flavour of the month. Willis and Aiello make for charismatic (if admittedly slightly smug) heroes and there are some pretty impressive stunts and action sequences. It also has some notable co-stars, including James Coburn as a corrupt CIA agent and a pre-NYPD Blue David Caruso in a very small supporting role.

On the downside, Grant and Bernhard were two of the most annoying (and not in a good way) villains ever to grace to big screen. And Andie McDowell as an undercover nun, who at one point impersonates a dolphin… well, the less said about her the better.

Hudson Hawk was a massive box-office flop at the time and ”won” several Razzie awards. However, the film has gradually built up a cult following over the years and is now no longer universally hated. It is is even, according to Willis in an interview on the latest DVD special edition, in profit.

I started this blog entry by saying that I’ve always had a soft spot for the film. And, in a funny way, it holds some special memories for me of a certain period of my life.

I saw it twice on the big screen when it was first released in 1991 (admittedly the second time was more by accident than design due to a breakdown in communications during a night out with pals) and therefore probably personally contributed half its total UK box office take.

And I remember, in the early 90s, haunting a few USENET newsgroups (going by the net nickname Kerr Avon) and, in particular, the CINEMA-L LISTSERV group, trying to convert non-believers to the cult of “Hud Hawk” – which helped while away many enjoyable hours in a job (my first after leaving university) that I hated.

But enough of the nostalgia, here is the film’s signature scene, in which Willis and Aiello carry out one of their trademark heists, which require split-second timing – but rather than use stopwatches to synchronise themselves and keep on schedule, they like to utilise the rythm method…

Yesterday, I wrote a little 150 word tribute to the actress in the Rosetta Stone ads, Lesley ann Mac

Yesterday, I wrote a little 150 word tribute to the actress in the Rosetta Stone ads, Lesley ann Machado. Since I no can learn English good, I probaly will never buy the product, but I thought about other pitchwomen who’ve influenced me to buy stuff I never thought of. I need to think better thoughts, but since I can’t right now, here is a list of my top ten tv spokeswomen.

10.) Andie Mcdowell. I don’t mean now, but the ads she did for L’oreal in the 80’s. There was no such thing as “guyliner” back in the day, but I was willing to invent it at the time. 9.) Lynda Carter. I was seven and Wonder Woman’s Maybelline Ads were scary hot. If you can find it on Youtube, good. 8.) Rachel Specter. I actually spent money on Right Guard’s lame-o RGX spray thanks to a sickeningly simple series of ads featuring Specter. I hear she wants to be known for more than the commercials. Why? 7.) Kathy Lee Gifford. There, I said it. She was never hot, but in a weird way she made me want to get on a boat. 6.)The Mayflower Moving newlywed. I don’t even want to know who she is, I just like the whole bubble wrap thing. 5.)Progressive Flo. Just kidding. I’m still a hater. 4.) Fawn Hall in the No Excuses spots. Best use of fickle public acclaim ever. 4.)Heidi Klum. I don’t mean the V.S. ads, but the recent Diet Coke Red Dress campaign against women’s heart disease. Having a cause is hot. 3.) Mrs Butterworth. I’ll be making a therapy appointment now. 2.)Padma Laksmi selling anything. I’d buy tires from that woman. 1.) Jenny McCarthy. Like I said, having a cause and sticking to it is hot. Between her Weight Watchers spots and work on behalf of autism awareness, I have to say that I’ve reevaluated Jenny. Hot is a nebulous concept, full of intangibles, I guess.

Remember the scene in “Groundhog Day” when Bill Murray’s character told the ground

Remember the scene in “Groundhog Day” when Bill Murray’s character told the groundhog, “don’t drive angry?” I probably shouldn’t post when I’m annoyed, but I really don’t have much choice.

When I first lost my job, I noticed I was having trouble getting to sleep. Anxiety, I guess. That passed, but the last couple of nights, I’ve been having problems staying asleep. It wasn’t too much of a problem Monday; I woke up bright and early at 7:30, which allowed me to get a good start on a project I’ve been working on.

It’s a problem today. Got home at 10, talked on the phone until 11, tried watching WWE Raw on the DVR (yes, I watch professional wrestling – to me, it’s the perfect reflection of the human condition), got tired and went to bed around midnight. I started tossing and turning around 4 and had to get up at 4:30. Which bites. Hard. I hadn’t done a blog post yet, so I figured I’d at least be able to get that done, so here we are… I’m driving a wildly careening car into a junk yard, being goaded by Bill Murray. It’d be much better if I were back in Punxsutawney with Andie MacDowell. Frankly, it’d be better if I were anywhere with Andie MacDowell. I think it’s her soft southern accent.

Anyway, one of the things vexing me during the job search has been trying to find something in my particular field of endeavor, which hasn’t necessarily been easy. It’s makes you think about the stories over the last few years about auto workers and other out-of-work people being retrained in new careers. There are fewer things tougher to watch than a classroom of blue-collar folks in their 50s tapping away at computer keyboards for the first time… I can’t imagine that any of those people will get tapped for an IT job.

One of the helpful (annoying?) features of the Google search bar on my web browser is the auto-complete. Start to type in a word or phrase, and it will offer you a list of popular options. Type in “recession,” and the first thing on its list is “recession-proof jobs,” which just happened to be what I was looking for.

The first article on the search list is from Forbes.com. Number one on its list? Sales Rep. That one seems paradoxical. Sure, you need to increase sales during tough times – but who wants to buy anything when times are tough?

Software design and development is second. I had at least one boss at an old job who seemed convinced that all information will eventually flow through desktop PCs. Next time you pass someone working in the service industry; filling an order, cooking your lunch or washing your car, ask them how much time they have during the workday to access their desktop. Still, I know computers are a tool whose use will only increase.

And of course, nursing is on the list. It’s always been on those lists. We’re living longer, but less healthy lives and fewer people choose that profession in the first place. I remember doing a story years ago about the nursing shortage and how one of the Memphis hospitals was importing nurses from Australia. A few weeks after doing the story, I was at Oak Court Mall and saw the videographer who shot the story out with the tallest, cutest Aussie nurse. Real operator, that guy.

Anyway, those kinds of lists make me wonder whether I should have made a different choice of career earlier in life… whether, like Bugs Bunny in all those Warners cartoons, I should have turned left at Albuquerque to avoid problems later. Even though I have no particular interest in any of those professions. I think I’ve been lucky to have been able to do something that I not only have some ability in doing, but also enjoy. Yes, I’ve had my share of soul-crushing jobs, but there’s always been the saving grace of being in the field I wanted to be in. Where’s Andie MacDowell when you need her?

Tom: Well, I don’t know, Charlie. The truth is, unlike you, I never expected “the thunderbolt”. I always just hoped that I’d meet some nice friendly girl, like the look of her…hope the look of me didn’t make her physically sick…then pop the question, settle down…be happy. It worked for my parents…well, apart from the divorce and all that.

Charles (Grant) meets Carrie (McDowell) at a wedding, falls in love pretty instantly, but then doesn’t see her again until another wedding, then another wedding, then a funeral, then yet another wedding. Thus, the title.

This is another one of those famous movies that I’d just never seen for some reason. It features Hugh Grant giving, what is now, a standard Hugh Grant performance. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. He’s usually funny and entertaining in these kinds of movies. As for McDowell, though, I thought her character, Carrie, was underwritten and not as charming as she should’ve been. I didn’t really get much of a sense as to why Charles was so taken with her.

There’s a lot of good subtle comedy moments, which I like. They don’t rely on a bunch of physical gags and over-the-top antics. That’s always a sign of good writing. Though, it feels a little overlong at times. There’s some wedding stuff that maybe could have been trimmed.

I guess a movie like this needs to be judged in a couple of main areas, comedy and romance. I give it high marks for comedy, but like I mentioned before, the romance was a little lacking and felt forced. I would have liked to see more about Kristin Scott Thomas’ character, and the revelation she makes to Charles. That whole angle sort of just gets brushed aside.

Overall, funny movie with some good performances by most of the actors. Just wish Carrie was more interesting and likeable, then I would have cared more about her and Charles ending up together.

10 – 2 for Carrie lacking likeability – .7 for being a little overlong + .3 for some effectively touching commentary about relationshps and marriage = 7.6

I don’t see any way out of it. He’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.

Well, Punxatawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday. Imagine that. Considering snow was pouring from the sky here in Kentucky when I heard the news and many of my students still don’t have power after the snow/ice storms last week, I can’t say that I’m very surprised. My mother informs me that there are actually four prognosticating groundhogs these days and they had mixed opinions. The two in the north saw their shadows and the two in the south didn’t. Hmm, since we’re somewhere in the middle maybe that means we only have three more weeks of winter instead of six. That would be nice.

Back in 1993, Bill Murray’s Phil Connors had an even worse winter experience. He is forced to relive Groundhog Day over and over again. At the beginning of the movie, Phil is a diamond in the rough – very rough, in fact you might as well call him coal. His attitude toward his career as a television weatherman is both condescending and superior as if he feels the job is beneath him but heaven help anyone who disparages his predictions. As many of Murray’s best roles are, Phil is caustic, flippant and occasionally cruel. He finds Punxatawney rustic in the worst sense and carries an air of weary “let’s get this over with” for his entire first 24 hours in the small town.

The movie shows us that Phil’s snide attitude is a cover for a very lonely man who uses humor as a weapon to push people away before they get too close. He’s actually very unhappy but it takes reliving the same day over and over to make him realize it and more importantly do something about it. Of course, the funniest parts occur as he’s mentally adjusting to his predicament. His reactions start off with disbelief then turn to glee as he recognizes the power he has: he can do anything without any permanent consequences. Eventually, even this grows old and he strikes out against himself and poor Punxatawney Phil as well. For me, one of the funniest scenes is the one where the two Phils go for a ride together.

Phil holds up a mirror to the audience. How many opportunities do we pass up each day that could improve our lives or the lives of others? Phil is a lonely, bitter man, but by learning to act outside of his accustomed selfish paradigm he becomes the most popular man in town. This is epitomized by his relationships with Rita (Andie McDowell) and Larry (Chris Elliott). In fact, his relationship with Larry becomes a barometer to how far his character has evolved. In the beginning, he is very rude and dismissive of Larry. As the movie progresses, we see Phil eventually start to see Larry as a human being and ask him about his life. This is even more significant than the progression of his romance with Rita since after all she is the love interest.

Groundhog Day marks an interesting benchmark in Bill Murray’s career. His previous comedies like Caddyshack, Stripes, and Ghostbusters are definitely of the slapstick mode. Groundhog Day certainly contains some slapstick humor, but also looks forward to the next phase of Murray’s career when he started doing more subtle work in Rushmore, Lost in Translation and Broken Flowers. This early ‘90s romantic comedy almost straddles the best of both worlds.

To many in the United States, February 2nd represents one of the last truly ‘American’ holidays untainted by time or commercialization: A groundhog, forcibly removed from a cage in Pennsylvania, will tell a crowd of onlookers whether or not we’ll have an early spring based on whether the he sees his shadow or not.

All across the United States, the groundhog’s prediction, and nation’s climate fate, will stimulate water cooler conversation for up to 45 seconds, collectively costing U.S. businesses dozens of dollars in lost earnings.

There is, however, another side to this time honored event…

Groundhog Day

The 1993 Bill Murray film about a pompous meteorologist forced to relieve Groundhog Day for all of eternity as penance for a self-serving life was nothing short of a breath of fresh air when it debuted. But that was 16 years ago, and with no complimentary mainstream Groundhog Day films available, the obligatory annual viewing has left a sour taste in some American’s mouths.

“I liked Groundhog Day the first 10 years or so”, said Albert O’Reese, of Louisville, Kentucky. “But it never changes, and there hasn’t been a film to take its place. Every Groundhog Day is the same now. I get home from work and we watch Groundhog Day. It’s been that way for 15 years now. I feel like I’m that weatherman, except I can’t play piano.”

Janet Lewis of Dover, New Hampshire, agreed, “Some years, my husband returned from the video store empty handed because Groundhog Day was rented out, and I secretly cheered. Now he’s realized that Netflix has it on their Watch Instantly list, so I’m going to have to watch that God (expletive) flapjack scene every year until I’m dead.”

While worldwide appeal remains strong (Groundhog Day is currently ranked #177 on the IMDb.com top 250 list), its place in the hearts of Americans is waning, though one anonymous man believes he’s found the solution. “We need to make a couple of (expletive) films about February 2 and throw those on TV every year. After five years of that, people will be begging to watch Groundhog Day again.” The unnamed individual added, “Andie McDowell still looks pretty hot these days. Maybe they could do a sequel with a nude scene.”

Twenty years after barging into Sundance with low expectations and leaving with a robust stake in festival mythology, Steven Soderbergh joined three-quarters of his sex, lies, and videotape cast for a rollicking anniversary screening.

Despite conspicuous no-shows James Spader (“I think he was embarrassed by the hair,” Soderbergh said) and Harvey Weinstein (“This is like a tribute to Dr. Frankenstein and the monster doesn’t come”), the director had a good-enough time with Andie MacDowell, Laura San Giacomo and Peter Gallagher, hanging out on the lip of the stage and reminiscing about those heady days of microbudgets, 120-degree Louisiana locations and agents who discouraged the actors from involving themselves with Soderbergh’s ostensibly smutty tale of voyeurs, true confessions and infidelity.

“The idea obviously came from watching porn,” Soderbergh half-joked during the 30-minute discussion that followed. “I’m happy to say I’ve never done that in my life. I viewed Graham [Spader's camera-wielding sex inquisitor] as kind of an intimacy junkie, and this was his sort of way of getting intimate information without actually having a relationship. But there’s a long history of this kind of behavior, as anyone who’s followed porn closely knows. It’s a more sophisticated version of the gonzo stuff that you see going on all the time. His new wrinkle was sort of shrouded in this patina of understanding. He’s really nefarious.”

It was the first time most on hand had seen the film since the filmmaker hand-carried it into Park City in 1989. Gallagher said it reminded him precisely why he wound up as one of Hollywood’s go-to smarmy types for the better part of the ’90s. “At the time this movie was released, I was at dinner and Sean Penn was sitting at the table next to us,” he recalled. “He leaned over and said, ‘Hey, man, nice job. I just wanted to meet the only other guy in Hollywood hated more than me.”

But that was apparently the worst of it. The rehearsal and shoot were the fastest and most efficient any of the principals had experienced. MacDowell churned at the prospect of working opposite Spader. “One of my biggest memories from rehearsal was James Spader, because he intimidated me,” she said. “I mean, James is kind of weird anyway. He’s a great actor, but he’s one of those actors who likes to really get into character. So I didn’t know who I was meeting when I met him. I think he was kind of already there, sort of. He was weird and kind of sexy at the same time. He was scary as hell, actually.”

But she wasn’t even supposed to have the role, according to Soderbergh; the producers disliked her, but she returned for another reading with the director. “Remember?” he asked her. “You were in the room alone with me. You did exactly what you did in the film. I came out and said, ‘Andie really is great, and I think that’s who we should go with. And everyone went, ‘Uh-oh. What happened in there?’ And I said, ‘No, it’s not like that. She’s really good.’ “

San Giacomo arrived in Park City shortly after the 1989 premiere. “By the second screening, that’s when it started to sort of catapult. And by the third screening, people were trying to sneak on line with ticket stubs trying to get in. It just blossomed from there; it was exciting. It was very much a darker place then! People were not in sporty clothes all the time! They were New York-looking! And very serious!” Pity!

It was a nice day: sunny, warm temperatures hovering around 25-degrees and little traffic – until…..

“I told you to take the pink bus! The brown? No! Pink? Yes!”

“He told me to use the brown one; I thought he knew more than I did, and since he’s a volunteer I thought maybe they changed routes or something….”

“So you took the brown bus?! I kept sayin’ ‘pink, pink.’”

“That’s what I get for listening to a biker dude named Ducky!”

Mom and I argued the whole way back to our hotel room. During our icy trek we passed the McDonald’s where we ate breakfast today. It was this same route we took back last year when I looked into McDonald’s to see a plasma TV airing FOX with news from Reno about a missing girl named Brianna Denison.

Anyway, on a lighter note, we watched ‘Sex, Lies and Videotape’ at the Egyptian Theater. It was introduced by Steven Soderbergh himself and mentioned we’d be watching his personal (restored) film – only a few exist. Afterwards a panel would talk about the impact the film had on Sundance and independent films and take questions from the audience.

I had never watched it before; I was 13 when it was released in theaters oh, about twenty years ago! Hello!

Afterwards, Soderbergh, Andie McDowell, Peter Gallagher and the girl from ‘Just Shoot Me’ (can’t remember her name right now) all sat down on the edge of the stage and talked.

Some fun little factoids:

took 30 days to shoot

the Bayou Bar ‘featured’ in the film burned down a few years — ‘Oh, it did?’ Peter Gallagher responded.

Weinsteins bought the distribution rights for $1 million. ‘We thought they were insane! That was a huge amount of money,” Soderbergh said.

Andie used most of her own clothes, the makeup person had never worked on a film before so when she would do lips for ??? she’d ask afterwards to Andie if they looked ok. ‘Oh yeah! I lied; they looked horrible,’ she laughed

the neighbors in the duplex did not like them there and banged pans in the next unit to mess up their shooting

rehearsed for only week beforehand

only had two trailers on the set; all rode in a van there

worked so hard some days, treated themselves to the nearby mall

Soderbergh allowed improv, but Andie learned her lines so well, she didn’t stray. ‘They were so beatiful, I couldn’t.’

they all knew they were working on something special while filming it

when it played at Cannes, Soderbergh called Andie to tell her and she asked, ‘does that mean it will be released there?’

Andie said James Spader scared her the first time she saw him. Everyone else was nice.

if the characters aged 20 years, Spader would be a millionaire now! and Peter Gallagher would be in jail.

Andie can blush on cue!

Soderbergh said Gallagher’s character, John? was the least-developed of the four

I really like the fact that with the festival you can see the movie and then hear about it from the filmmakers themselves (if it’s premiere night) – it’s not just a one-dimensional experience you know what I mean?

We see Steven Soderbergh again tomorrow for a panel. We have to go downtown anyway to the inauguration – plasma TVs are expected to show it all along Main Street.

Oh and let me mention how annoyed I am I couldn’t get tickets to this show either! Ugh!

(There are a few shots of the four answering questions after the film. It it shows up, I am in the third row in the left section left of Soderberg. I basically was so close, I could see Andie McDowell’s makeup.)

but when it comes to food, some things should be off limits.

They ran out of sour cream, so the guy put mayonaise on his burrito. That’s just sick.

Dont you just have to wonder about some people? I know I’m strange, and people tell me so, more or less, but things like that are just not right.

I couldnt tell you the strangest thing I’ve ever done, or the most stupid. At the same time, I cant really name the smartest or the thing I’m most proud of either. There are some really embarrassing things, but I wont share them now.

Robin Cheers Painting

This is one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done. It’s a sketch for a painting by Robin Cheers. She lives near the ocean, in Texas and when I saw this little sketch, I just had to get it. Expensive? Perhaps, but no more than some people would spend on a dress or new shoes.

Who was it that said,”A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”? Frost or Shakespeare, maybe Alice Cooper. The thing is, I will be enjoying this lovely thing far longer than any shoes or clothes I’ll ever buy. I have other pieces in my home, as well, and they all bring me a joy that I wouldnt trade for anything. Perhaps I’ll post some lo-res photos another time.

I am plagued by beauty. If given the opportunity, I will gaze, even stare at a thing until it’s embarrassing. It can be almost like a trance for me to look at a thing, or listen to a voice or well played instrument. I remember the first time I heard Sylvia McNair’s recording of the Pie Jesu from Faure’s requiem. It gave me goosebumps. I played it for an ex-priest and he wept for the beauty of it. (I dont know why he was “ex”, but that isnt important to this story.) What about Rostropovich’s recording of the Bach cello suites! Is there anything more beautiful?

Even food can be an ethereal experience. There is a little restaurant, not far from our home, where they make the best chilaquiles. I can never eat it all, but I chew slowly, letting each bite rest on my tongue for a moment, enjoying all the wonderful layers of flavor.

What about poetry? or writing in general? I love it. William Carlos Williams rocks! Naomi Shihab Nye, Elizabeth Knies, or Seamus Heaney can say things so simply, yet with such dexterity of vocabulary that I find myself thinking about their words long after I’ve put the book down. One of my favorite books is Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Sure it’s old and odd, but so am I.

Then there are movies – films, if you prefer. Some strike a deep chord while others just entertain, but I am addicted. From last years Ironman to classics from Bergman, Hughes and Ford, there are many that I have to watch over and over.

Who can disregard the internal struggle of Gary Cooper in High Noon? Or Ingrid Thulin as she tries to grasp true faith in Nattvardsgästerna (Winter Light)? Think of the visual beauty of Tran Anh Hung’s Mua he chieu thang dung (Vertical Ray of the Sun)! Of course, there’s the struggle of a man trying to come to terms with limited immortality in Groundhog Day. (Did I just put Groundhog Day in a list of beautiful things? Well, it does feature Andie McDowell and that has to count for something.)

I got you babe di Sonny and Cher. Vi svegliate con questa canzone e cosa pensate? Piuttosto carina,

I got you babe

di Sonny and Cher.

Baby Mama is supposed to make you laugh, but that depends on how raw your own emotions are about the

Baby Mama is supposed to make you laugh, but that depends on how raw your own emotions are about the subject of conceiving a child. But let’s assume that if anyone can make you smile over fertility issues, perhaps it is Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Yet Baby Mama is only the beginning of Hollywood’s attempt to address the growing number of women who face fertility challenges and struggle to conceive a child. Miss Conception, with Heather Graham, is coming up next. If you haven’t heard, Graham will play a 33-year-old with a family history of early menopause who panics when the alarm sounds on her ticking biological clock, ringing in tones that only she can hear.

After that, you can look for Helen Hunt to play a 39-year-old woman in Then She Found Me, the story of a fertility patient connecting with her own birth mother at the time of her adoptive mother’s death. At least this movie comes with an all-star cast, that in addition to Hunt includes Bette Middler, Matthew Broderick, and Colin Firth.

And Jennifer Tilly and Andie McDowell will play a couple in Inconceivable, an indie film that deals with how infertility affects both gay and straight couples.

If you read my post-Mother’s Day blog, “Infertility and a Reason to Ignore Mother’s Day” then you already know that I think Hollywood may make hit movies but it doesn’t necessarily speak to the heartbeat of issues. Producing a movie that brings tears to the eyes of people who are not facing the life challenge of infertility themselves, is a far cry from accurately and honorably addressing an issue in a way that resonates truthfully to the women who know infertility firsthand.

Time will tell if these movie producers “get it” or if Hollywood is just looking for ways to cash in on a pervasive and emotional issue.

Please post your comments. Have you seen Baby Mama or did you pass it up? Is Hollywood helping or perpetuating myths about the challenges of infertility? What do you think about these movies and their ability to deliver a meaningful message on the subject?

Note: I realize that there are other groundhogs, which are perhaps making contradictory predictions.

Note: I realize that there are other groundhogs, which are perhaps making contradictory predictions. These groundhogs are all imposters that are trying to cut in on Phil’s gig. But you’re got to check out this guy who linked to my blog, and I’m linking back to his–he wrote about Phil’s cousin, click here.

Groundhog Day makes me proud to be a Pennsylvanian. Every year for the past 120 years, the rest of the country, maybe even the world, looks to Gobbler’s Grove to hear the prediction of Punxsutawney Phil. Most of us wish they would just drop the “Punxsutawney” part because it’s hard to spell.

According to the official site of Groundhog Day (yes, there’s an official site), P-Phil saw his shadow, and alas, there will be six more weeks of winter. The Groundhog Day committee says that Phil’s predictions are accurate 84% of the time. Uh-huh. How can we trust weather statements from a critter whose friends regularly become road kill when not in hibernation?

Not only that, but they drag the poor guy out of his peaceful sleep at the crack of dawn, while it still appears to be dark outside, and put him in front of thousands of people, cameras, lights, and (well, you look at the pictures here–I’d run back into my safe little burrow, too). Here’s Phil’s official prediction, with commentary from me:

Here Ye! Here Ye! Here Ye!

On Gobbler’s Knob on this fabulous Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2008
Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators,
Rose to the call of President Bill Cooper and greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths (greeted, tried to bite, something like that).

After casting a weathered (terrified) eye toward thousands of his faithful followers (AKA “crazy groundhog people), Phil consulted (peed on the hand of) with President Cooper and directed him to the appropriate scroll (by chewing it), which proclaimed:

“As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!” (He’s poetic for a rodent, ain’t he?)

Let me be honest here, folks. I don’t understand how seeing the sunrise would indicate more winter. I mean, isn’t seeing the sun a good thing? Doesn’t it mean there are no storm clouds in the sky? Besides, how could Phil tell the difference between the sun and all those bright lights and flashing cameras? Like I said before, that pandemonium would have me scurrying back to safety.

Could the popularity of Groundhog Day be Phil’s undoing?

Perhaps he can no longer provide accurate weather assessments due to the outside influence of the paparazzi. Poor guy. All he wants to do is sit on the edge of major highways chewing on grass like all his friends.

For more information on the history of Groundhog Day (like why we use a rodent to predict weather), check out this link.
