Ever notice how the perfect things in life eventually find you?  Whether it’s your soulmate, your calling, your home or even your . . . dining room chairs.  Ok, that’s a bit of a stretch but if you are a rustic chic style junkie (and why are you here if you’re not?) then you’ll totally understand where I’m going with this.  In this case I had to wait some 70+ years for these down-at-the-heels beauties to walk in my life.  Not that I am 70+, the chairs are . . . just wanted to clarify that.

Anyway, we had been searching for a long time for the right dining chairs – strong-lined, simple, tailored and a bit graphic.  But the search was fraught with disappointment and woe.  Just wasn’t feelin’ the love.  Looking for it in all the wrong places as the song goes.

Then on a Saturday not too long ago, six of these beautiful Louis XVI-style chairs from Tendenze Design in Califon, New Jersey (www.tendenzedesign.com) found us.  Tendenze Design is owned by Andrea Filippone and she has a tremendous assortment of all things RC.  From chairs to mirrors to planters, Andrea’s eye is amazing.  She also lives in a renovated barn that would make Axel weep with jealousy.  Tendenze’s lushly planted grounds surrounding the barn are on the yearly garden tours out here.  Take a look at her website and then run, do not walk, to visit her.  (We have not yet been able to finagle a tour of her home, but maybe she’ll read this and take the hint.)

Back to the chairs.  They appear to be mahogany or fruitwood and have the classic 1930’s streamlined tailoring often found in that decade’s interpretation of Louis XVI-style furniture.  They have beautiful brass fittings and sabots on the front legs (an instant selling point for me) but they definitely need work – refinishing and reupholstery.  With regard to the existing linen velvet upholstery, it’s difficult to tell what the original color was – pink, mauve or . . . green?  (When I said in a previous post that I was a sucker for anything covered in moss, this was not what I meant.)  I do, however, really like the crisp, boxed edges of the way the original upholstery was applied and the tapered legs and want to retain those details when I have them made under. 

One of the most fascinating things I discovered on these chairs (see the detail shot of the front seat edge below) was that the welting substrate is metal wire, not cord.  I have never seen welting done like that before and to my knowledge no one does it.  I intend to ask my upholsterer. 

But what about the wood finish?  These may have had a French polish at one time, but it’s difficult to tell and in any event, that would be too slick for the barn.  If these were going into one of my client’s residences in the city, I would probably have them French polished.  

One thought about refinishing the frames is to stain them dark (to contrast with the barn’s center table) and then do a dull-ish clear wax topcoat.  My other thought is to go over the existing finish with a few coats of paint, lightly distress them by sanding the edges and recesses and then do a clear wax topcoat. Still another thought is to bleach them to their raw wood state and possibly just wax them with a bit of burnt sienna or raw umber artist’s oil paint mixed in the clear butcher’s wax. I would love to hear some feedback from you all with your thoughts.

For the upholstery I’m thinking greige linen or possibly a silk matka if I can find the right slightly chunky weave.  The chairs will get medium-light usage so I’m not too concerned about using heavy-duty-wearing fabric, although cream denim with French natural nailheads all around the seat and inside back could impart just the kind of great yin and yang that I call RC.

The photos here were taken just as I had finished cleaning them as best I could and was preparing them for storage in the red barn for the winter where they will anxiously await their forthcoming rustic chic makeunder.  I’ll follow up with the final results once they are done.

Crushed under her own books.

I have to say, when I first listened to Cheryl’s debut solo album, I wasn’t keen, I really wasn’t. I’ve listened to it all week now and LOVE IT. It’s definitely a grower. Just give it a chance if you felt the same. I mean, I’m a massive Girls Aloud fan so there was always going to be the painful comparison of Cheryl on her own without the girls…. it wasn’t ever going to be the same. But hell, it’s not half bad, not half bad at all! Alas, I degress, 3 Words is one of the songs I was finding myself humming and singing, badly. So it’s quite nice that this is Cheryl’s follow up single to Fight For This Love.

In the 3 Words video, Cheryl takes on three ‘personas’: her usual Hollywood glamour look with big big hair, a blunt brunette bob and unusually her final look is a gaga inspired platinum blonde style. It’s definitely fair to say Cheryl looks best with her brunette locks!

“Here comes everybody”: Web 2.0

In Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations, Clay Shirky discuses “Web 2.0”, a blanket term to describe new web applications such as Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, and Blogger that are user-centered and facilitate interactivity, information-sharing, and collaboration. He notes that Web 2.0 has transformed communication from the familiar one-on-one and one-to-many to “many-to-many”. Intrigued by the potential this presents for social change, we interviewed Monica Hamburg and Peter Deitz. Monica is a writer and social media evangelist who investigates how online technology connects people and helps them do business. She was a contributor to One Degree, an online digital marketing magazine, and is the author of YourDoseofLunacy.com. Peter is Founder and Executive Director of Social Actions, a global network of organizations and online platforms making the internet more philanthropic, creative, and participatory – it helps ensure that browsing the web is full of meaningful opportunities to take action on causes people care about.

“Web 2.0 makes connecting and distributing information infinitely easier,” Monica says. The new tools can “encourage people to pass on items they are passionate about which can lead to others promoting your event and cause seamlessly.” Peter notes that Web 2.0 has caused organizations to begin breaking with the tradition of viewing their programs at the center of creating positive impact. “Organizations are now putting people at the center of their impact, whether they are donors, beneficiaries, volunteers, or casual supporters.” With respect to gender-based violence, Monica notes that Web 2.0 can give voice to those who experience violence and allow others to understand they are not alone. “But it’s not magic,” she warns. Effort needs to be put into using Web 2.0 effectively, as was the case for old forms of organizing and mobilizing. In his book, Shirky addresses the fact that for every widely-accessed blog or wiki and for every highly engaged user, hundreds and perhaps thousands are not. We shouldn’t get trapped in the excitement – successful information sharing, collective action, and “many-to-many” communication takes real work.

Nonetheless, great potential lies in Web 2.0 tools to engage people in challenging violence against women and girls, because they boost sharing of stories. “Who is affected?” Monica asks. “What is happening? I think this is particularly effective when it comes to a misunderstood issue.” Peter also notes that Web 2.0 provides mechanisms to deepen the engagement of people who already care about the issues. “I would encourage the advocates for awareness and action on gender-based violence in Canada to use Web 2.0 to link up the people who already are concerned and affected.” In addition to story sharing, he also refers to “network-weaving” to help create many points of engagement for different people. “It’s probably more effective to find out who already cares about this cause rather than initially trying to recruit allies,” Monica confirms. She suggests that searching the web for who is already speaking to the issue of violence against women and girls should be the first step. Finally, Monica offers wise advice in a context where many of us are struggling to keep up with and understand new technologies. “Remember, social media isn’t about the tools. It’s how you use those tools.”

I don’t need to write much about how impactful television can be and how powerful the media is as a whole. Many of us can appreciate how television reproduces mainstream understandings of what it means to be “woman” and “man” – and the violence, abuse, and mess implicit in that. What’s more interesting to me is how to apply and encourage critical thinking about television.

I do enjoy my shows – I can watch hours of The Office end to end (especially episodes by Mindy Kaling. Mindy, if you’re reading, call me). And although I’m embarrassed by how silently enthused it makes me, Mad Men keeps me up at night. (Matthew Weiner, if you’re sitting next to Mindy and reading, call me.)

But even “good” t.v. requires critique. Consolidation of media ownership under a few mega-corporations and the fact that our beloved shows are really padding between advertisements have caused big problems. (Yes, CNN and Fox, I’m thinking ‘bout you). Beyond that, a lot of the content of ads, news, and programs out there is just terrible. Drew’s post this week is a great example, but it doesn’t have to be as in your face as that. Why are racialized characters, particularly Black characters, so silent and absent in Mad Men? (None of the musings I’ve read on the internet by other “Mad Mennies” on this subject have convinced me that it makes any sense.) What’s up with these “top model” and other reality shows? They reek of sexism and mistreatment of women, not to mention other things, but somehow that’s seen as okay.

I could go on, but I’ll leave you with the “Five ‘Rs’ of Media Awareness” in End the Silence: A Zine for Youth, by Youth (by METRAC’s peer youth violence prevention program, ReAct).

Realize: learn about the influence of media in your life.

Read between the lines: discuss the media’s messages and the intent of most media to convince the audience of something. Think: why do they want you to listen? Is it because someone wants to get rich off of you? Or do they want you to accept an idea that will make them powerful at everyone else’s expense?

Resist: develop your own opinions about what media can do to people and try to do something about it, like supporting media that’s not oppressive, protest messed up media, or lead a discussion with your friends to talk about how you can share what you think.

Re-invent: learn how to work with media (e.g. make your own website, take pictures, do a documentary) and make your own media to get healthy, constructive, and conscious messages out.

Reclaim: try to get access to mass media (e.g. call into a radio show, go on a “Speakers Corner”) and spread your positive message).

Eh sì, sono passati ben 37 anni da quel disco del 1972 che ha cambiato vita e carriera di Claudio Baglioni ed è diventato la colonna sonora dei momenti romantici di tantissimi, tantissimi italiani.

E ora ecco che scalpita per arrivare in ogni negozio di musica (a partire da domani, 27 novembre) il nuovo doppio album dell’artista romano, Q.P.G.A. che riparte proprio dal 1972 per esplorare, riscrivere, ampliare, rielaborare la fantastica storia di Giulia e Andrea, la storia che ognuno di noi ha già vissuto o vivrà in qualche momento del futuro, quella del primo amore che magari non durerà tutta la vita ma verrà ricordato per sempre come quello che ci ha cambiato e preparato alla vita stessa.

Grandissimi i nomi coinvolti in questo progetto sia per quanto riguarda i big (Mina, Franco Battiato, Elio e le storie tese, Fiorello, Antonello Venditti…) che per quel che concerne gli artisti esordienti (Giusy Ferreri, Alessandra Amoroso e Noemi) per un totale di più di 70 (!) grandi personaggi coinvolti nel progetto.

Tra i brani di QPGA L’arcobaleno con Mina, Sembra il primo giorno con Franco Battiato, Questo piccolo grande amore con Ennio Morricone al piano, Buon compleanno con Renzo Arbore e Morgan. Il disco però è solo una parte di un grande progetto che comprende libro, film e una serie di concerti in giro per tutta Italia a partire dal 5 dicembre.

Ma questa volta non siamo solo interessati a sapere se comprerete e ascolterete il disco o seguirete i concerti di Baglioni. Questa volta ci piacerebbe leggere, nei commenti, il racconto personale di quello che è stato il vostro piccolo grande amore. Non c’è bisogno di far noi precisi, potete cambiare luoghi e date, quel che importa sarebbe la testimonianza di cosa è successo, di quello che avete provato in quel momento e di come vi ha cambiato dentro.

Today, citizens of the United States celebrate a day to be thankful for everything you have in your life. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation where the pilgrims gave thanks to God for surviving a brutal winter, a harvest festival that expanded three days. Our modern day celebrations are compared to this meal held in 1921. Although it’s not the first official Thanksgiving in this country.

A similar harvest festival took place in 1619 at the Virginia Colony and some say it dates further back to 1565 when 600 Spanish settlers held a mass of Thanksgiving after arriving safely to St. Augustine, Florida. However, it wasn’t a harvest festival and thus, some refuse to acknowledge it as the first Thanksgiving in the New World. President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving about 200 years after the Plymouth celebration. However, it was not made an official national holiday until 1941 by Congress.

In the United States, many people will be participating the tradition of eat Turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing. For those of you who are not celebrating Thanksgiving, you could always take this time to give thanks. There is always something to be thankful of: family, friends, a great writing career and a wonderful life in general. It doesn’t exactly have to be a national holiday for you to show how appreciative you are. What are some things you’re thankful for?

Det pågår en klimatförändring, som kan hota hela världens existens. Den orsakas av en förändring i växthuseffekten, men vad är det som orsakar förändringen? Är det vi människor eller sker det naturligt? Forskare världen över är oense om vilken faktor som är den största miljöboven. Vi tittar därför närmare på ett huvudargument från vardera sidan och drar en egen slutsats om situationen.

De forskare som menar att den globala uppvärmningen är ett resultat av mänsklig aktivitet lägger främst vikt på argumentet om våra ökade koldioxidutsläpp. Ända sedan vi på allvar kom igång med förbränningen av fossila bränslen kan man se en kraftig ökning av mängden ohälsosamma växthusgaser, då främst koldioxid, i atmosfären. Det här får effekten att temperaturen stiger kring jorden enligt FN:s klimatpanel IPCC, som vann Alfred Nobels fredspris tillsammans med Al Gore år 2007.

Temperaturförändringar är i sig egentligen fullt naturliga. Vi vet at det har varit varmare till exempel här i Sverige; man har kunnat odla vindruvor i Skåne. Enligt den världsomspännande miljö- och fredsorganisationen Greenpeace är dock det som är speciellt med den pågående temperaturökningen att den är global; hela världen påverkas och inte bara en del av den.

Hur kan då forskare vara så säkra på att det verkligen är människan som i huvudsak ligger bakom temperaturförändringarna? Jo, genom att borra i inlandsisen på bland annat Grönland kan man se hur luftens sammansättning förändrats över tid. Enligt Greenpeace har koldioxidhalten kring jorden ökat med 35 % de senaste 150 åren. Detta är oroväckande med tanke på att halten varit relativt stadig under de tidigare hundra tusen åren.

Det faktum att den så pass kraftiga och snabba förändringen av atmosfärens koldioxidhalt har skett sedan vi kom igång med industrialismen, pekar enligt de flesta forskare mot att det är människan som är orsaken till dagens klimatförändring. Enligt den här hypotesen skulle koldioxidhalten i atmosfären hållas fortsatt stadig oavsett naturlig påverkan, om det inte vore för oss och våra bilar, flygplan, förbränning av fossila bränslen och skövling av regnskog.

En annan synvinkel
Om man ska titta på argument som indikerar att orsakerna till den globala uppvärmningen inte ligger på mänskligt plan, finns det en mängd olika. Som exempel på det pekar man på den varma period som rådde under medeltiden då vindruvor odlades i Skåne samt den del av vikingatiden då gräs täckte Grönlands kuster. Utöver detta påstående menas att vulkanutbrott skulle vara en orsak till den globala uppvärmningen. Vad gäller dessa påståenden, finns det en mängd bemötande kritik som visar på brister. Det finns dock ett som står ut från mängden, då det kan beläggas vetenskapligt i och med det inte verkar vara helt orimligt. Hypotesen har tagits fram av den danske forskaren Henrik Svensmarks och bygger på att jordens klimat påverkas av kosmisk strålning.

För att förstå den här teorin, måste man känna till sambandet mellan solens magnetfält och den kosmiska strålningen. Enligt hypotesen minskar den kosmiska strålningen som når jorden om styrkan i solens magnetfält ökar.

Den kosmiska strålningen består i huvudsak av joner. När dessa joner når atmosfären bildas moln, då jonerna underlättar bildandet av regndroppar. Hypotesen menar alltså att stark kosmisk strålning resulterar i ett stort antal moln. Då moln reflekterar bort ljus- och värmeenergi, menas också att många moln resulterar i låg temperatur på jorden och vice versa.

För att återkomma till den vetenskapliga bevisningen som stödjer Svensmarks teori, har framförallt en undersökning bidragit. Michael Lockwood, en engelsk forskare, bevisade efter ett experiment att solens magnetfält har ökat. Hans slutsats blev att solens magnetfälts blivit 2,3 gånger starkare sedan 1870-talet. Detta, menar han, är en ökning med 40 procent sedan 1960-talet. Man har även lagt märke till att den kosmiska strålningen minskar när solens magnetiska aktivitet är hög. Om detta skrivs det i en artikel i “Lund Universitet Meddelar”.

Vår slutsats

Vi anser att dagens klimatförändring i grunden kanske är naturlig, och att människans påverkan oturligt nog har uppkommit i samma veva. Vi tycker att vi lika gärna kan försöka åtgärda våra egna utsläpp. Om teorier, såsom den om kosmisk strålning, inte spelar in i den globala uppvärmningen är det bara vi människor som kan göra något åt vår situation. Om det ändå är naturliga faktorer som ger upphov till klimatförändringarna, så gör det i ingen skada att dra ned på utsläppen av växthusgaser i alla fall. Det är betydligt hälsosammare och bättre för alla om vi kan ta hand om våra utsläpp och vårt skräp på något annat sätt än att förgifta luften vi andas.

Allora Andrea sei l’astro nascente della letteratura italiana, vorrei partire proprio dalla tua giovane età per chiederti subito come fa un giovane ad emergere con la scrittura e … insomma a farsi notare da editori come Einaudi…

 L’unica possibilità è quella di scrivere tanto, leggere tantissimo, e non darsi mai per soddisfatti. Prima di arrivare a pubblicare con Einaudi io ho scritto nel silenzio per tanti anni, sempre cercando di fare dei passi avanti. I primi due romanzi, poi li ho pubblicati per due piccoli editori: Portofranco (che ora non esiste più) e PeQuod, che esiste e continua a fare un ottimo lavoro. I grandi editori tengono molto in considerazione i più piccoli, e spesso è proprio da lì che vanno a pescare. Questo è anche un po’ un peccato per l’editoria di ricerca, che si vede sottratti autori importanti dopo averli scoperti. In ogni caso questa piccola editoria è fondamentale ed è continuamente a caccia di scrittori. L’Italia è tendenzialmente un paese in cui se si vale, in qualche modo si riesce ad uscire.

 Tu hai dedicato molte energie per osservare da vicino la tua generazione, hai scritto sul precariato, Come vedi il futuro di questa generazione?

 Io credo si debba più che altro ritornare a parlare di futuro. Vedo continuamente ritratti apocalittici, senza più speranza. Credo che ritratti semplificatori di questo genere finiscano per essere delle profezie. Si finisce per adeguarsi alle basse aspettative, e da qui nasce anche tanta della rassegnazione che c’è in giro. Ciò detto, credo sia fondamentale raccontare le contraddizioni, non nascondersi le verità, ma provare a ragionare anche delle vie di uscita. Troppo comodo, avere cittadini disillusi.

 I giovani in Italia si definiscono apolitici: cosa pensi della loro “a-politicità?”

 Penso che appunto si tratti di una profezia. In questi ultimi mesi i giovani hanno dimostrato di credere nella politica. Sono scesi in piazza in massa, hanno riempito le strade, come fiumi per le città. E questo è a tutti gli effetti fare della politica. C’è semplicemente un’idea di politica diversa. C’è l’idea di una politica “della televisione”, che nulla ha a che vedere con le persone, e una politica fatta concretamente, fisicamente. Su questo credo si debba lavorare, per aumentare la consapevolezza.

 Una ragazza che manifestava nei giorni scorsi contro la Riforma Gelmini, ha chiesto ad un giornalista: ma insomma se non mi posso fidare delle istituzioni, delle forze dell’ordine di chi mi posso fidare? Ecco io giro a te la sua domanda. Di chi ci possiamo fidare?

 Credo si debba comunque fare un passo avanti, su questo fronte. Ovvero, è naturale la delusione, è sacrosanta la manifestazione di dissenso, ma non deve portare all’immobilismo, alla resa. Io credo ci si debba fidare ma informandosi, dotandosi di strumenti per fare politica attivamente. L’unico modo per fidarsi della politica è provare a farla, e dunque a cambiarla dall’interno.

 Come vedi l’Onda? Cosa pensi di questo movimento? Vedi delle analogie con il ’68 ?

 Sono due momenti storicamente molto diversi. Oggi manca tutto il conflitto intergenerazionale che c’era a quei tempi. Oggi c’è un malessere più diffuso, ma nello stesso tempo c’è una delusione più forte, e una disgregazione sociale che non è mai stata così radicale. Tutto questo rende più arduo qualsiasi tentativo di fare durare un movimento. Su questo bisogna lavorare, sul fare sì che perduri.

Hai osservato da vicino anche gli studenti medi, la I Pod generation, Pasolini parlava di “condizione giovanile”, vedendoli da vicino che idea ti sei fatto?

È una domanda complessa, e difficile da esaurire in poche righe. Da un lato, però, ho trovato che molti aspetti dell’adolescenza siano rimasti uguali. Oggi si è un po’ trasformata in patologia sociale una fascia anagrafica, diciamo. Aspetti, inquietudini tipiche dell’adolescenza sono diventate sintomi di disagio. È questa ricezione dell’adolescenza, quella che trovo più preoccupante. Ciò detto, è indubbio che ci sia più disagio, ma l’errore è attribuirlo a quella fascia di età. C’è un disagio diffuso, e forse gli adulti sono quelli che lo patiscono di più.

 Parliamo un po’ di te : qual è il libro, o i libri, che hai in questo momento sul tuo comodino?

Vediamo. Io leggo sempre molti libri contemporaneamente. Prima di tutto ho alcune riletture, perché rileggere i libri è fondamentale. Sto rileggendo La linea d’ombra di Conrad, Memorie dal sottosuolo di Dostoevskij e Il sergente nella neve di Rigoni Stern. Poi sto leggendo: Questo novecento di Vittorio Foa, L’invenzione della tradizione di Hobsbawn, L’ultima partita a carte di Rigoni Stern e il massaggiatore cieco di Catalin Florescu.

Domanda canonica: progetti per il futuro?

C’è un romanzo che mi terrà impegnato per molto tempo. Un progetto lungo, e così complesso che non sarei davvero in grado di dire di più.
