The Clanger loves a laugh, so we jumped at the chance to meet Bedford’s finest ukelele-based comedy

The Clanger loves a laugh, so we jumped at the chance to meet Bedford’s finest ukelele-based comedy act, The Ouse Valley Singles Club (OVSC), to discover what makes Bedford so funny.

With songs entitled Bedford Rascal, Weekend Dad and Facebook Blues, singer and co-songwriter of the OVSC, Tim Barron manages to evoke modern life in all its glory.

“We’re like a musical, modern day William Hogarth,” declares Tim. “Our song Kicking Out Time is our Bedfordian interpretation of The Rakes Progress. We don’t write about the glamour of Bedford (really? – Ed), but rather the ‘warts and all’ side of life and that’s why people can relate to it and laugh at it.”

While training as an electrician, Tim began his show-business career with local band the Two Ton Beavers. But when the band split up, he realised that his inner show-off could not be suppressed. Am Dram followed and Tim was told those immortal Cowellesque words: ‘you could be a professional’. Redundancy from his electricians job followed and Tim realised that this was his opportunity to use the money to follow his dream…

to Loughton in Essex.

A contemporary theatre course at the East15 drama school was not only where he met his wife (and OVSC bass player Amy Martell), but also where he became inspired to take a show to Edinburgh.

In August 2005, Tim and his East15 course mates took a show to the renowned Fringe Festival. ‘Terrorist! The Musical’ became the toast of Edinburgh and provided the springboard for his next project – something that he’d been thinking about for a while – a show about a Gary Glitter tribute artist whose career ends when Paul Francis Gadd is arrested on child abuse charges. Tim and his co-writer/director Jessica Beck took ‘Up The Gary’ to Edinburgh in 2006 and then toured nationwide before heading to the New York Fringe Festival in 2008. Stardom beckoned!

By now, Tim was living in London and following his dream of acting. But the lure of Bedford proved too strong and he soon moved back to his roots. “When I was in London I was totally uninspired. I moved back to Bedford and material just started ‘Ousing’ out of me (see what I did there?). I was surrounded by my kind of people and the humour of Bedford provided me with the basis for the OVSC.”

“I write all the songs with my Uncle Sam – a veteran predator on the Bedford singles scene – so we had a wealth of experience to draw on,” explains Tim. “The Bedford Rascal song is based on me, but almost all the others use my various uncles as inspiration. Within English culture there is a strong history of humorous story-telling through music. From the Victorian music halls to the songs from the wars, through to Peter Sellers, Pete & Dud, the Barron Knights (no relation) and Ivor Bigun, we’ve always enjoyed a laugh through music. Shame Richard Digance killed it really.”

This heritage is at the heart of the OVSC and is a vehicle for Tim to spread the joy of Bedfordshire throughout the land. “I’ve been inspired by Shane Meadows’ work and his devotion to Uttoxeter and the Midlands. I wanted to do that for Bedford. Although each of our songs speaks of our town, they are universally understood because we’re singing about all nondescript part of the country.”

Tim and Amy can be seen at this year’s Bedfringe with a FREE show at The Place Theatre on Sunday 24th July. Performing songs from the OVSC ‘concept’ album ‘Aim Low & Early’, the audience will be invited to become honorary members of the singles club for one night only.

“We performed ‘Up The Gary’ at the first Bedfringe in 2005 and I take my hat off to James (Pharaoh) and the organisers for their dedication in building the festival up over the last five years. No-one expects a town like Bedford to have such a thriving Fringe scene, so we’re proud to be part of it.”

Throughout the group matches of this summer’s World Cup it’s likely that you’ll hear much patronising of the New Zealand side. Commentators and pundits will talk in amazed tones of how some of the players in Team Kiwi are not even full professionals. This should be no surprise to anyone who has even a fleeting interest in World Cups or even sport in general. Only a very small percentage of footballers who play regularly are professional, and the vagaries of the World Cup qualification competition do lead to teams like New Zealand qualifying, and in my view the competition is much stronger for it.

One of the players in the Kiwi squad who isn’t currently a full pro is Team Wellington keeper and Puma sales rep James “Jim” Bannatyne who has earned only three caps in an international career that has for the most part seen him fly around the world as backup for other goalkeepers. Team Wellington are effectively a feeder side for Wellington Phoenix, a side that currently features former Millwall midfielder Paul Ifill and Man City youth product and lower league goal-getter Chris Greenacre amongst their squad. That probably gives a good indication as to what level Bannatyne is currently playing at.

Bannatyne is one of the few players at this summer’s World Cup who can boast a season at west-London club Yeading. He played twenty-four games for the club whilst on an extended visa after doing a degree in sports science in America. During his stint with the club he managed to score, a feat he claims to have managed on three separate occasions in his career. Bannatyne’s team-mate at Team Wellington and fellow non-pro Andrew Barron is also making the trip to South Africa, the midfielder can also point to a spell at a club in the British Isles after he spent some of his early career at Northern Irish club Listburn Distillery. In fact New Zealand’s side is packed full of players with British links that will have ITV commentators drooling.

Jim Bannatyne turns 35 on the 30th June, the day after the last 2nd Round game. It’s likely by then that his World Cup will be over, but be braced for what could be one of the most magnificent quiz questions of all time should he get on the pitch or emulate his goalscoring exploits (after all a lot of the World Cup is at altitude with a “crazy ball”).

Question: What is the name of the Puma employee, who while wearing a Nike kit, scored using an Adidas Ball at the World Cup? The name’s Bannatyne, James Bannatyne.

GENE DAVID KIRK’Snew play, All Alone, looks at the seedy world of the internet chat room groomer.

Chatting anonymously to others their own age can, I’m sure, seem like a haven to many lonely, vulnerable children; but how do they really know who’s on the other end? It’s easy to see how someone can manufacture a caring, ‘listening’ on-line persona and pull children in.

This isn’t just an internet chat room problem, it has been going on for years; strangers, family friends, people in authority, neighbours, all of these can abuse their position.

What makes the internet more dangerous is the masking of identity and that children assume it is their domain, somewhere safe from prying adults.

In All Alone, Toby Alexander and Andrew Barron each play multiple aspects of one man’s personality. Through them we see into his abused past, the internal conflicts that have exploded in his head over the years and the guilt, anticipation, justification and delight as he plans and executes his latest trap.

From the start we are left in no doubt that this person is a real danger; the presence of the dead girl, played with great control throughout by Charmaine Szecowka, gives that away!

Masturbating over the body, vomiting over it, abusing it and even dancing cheek to cheek with it makes it crystal clear that we are watching a man who values life little and will kill again to feed his fantasy and punish the ‘stupid bitches’ who let themselves be taken in by him.

There are some laughs along the way, laughs often cut short as the audience finds itself uncomfortable, like they were laughing at a murder scene but genuinely funny moments nonetheless.

This is not a piece of theatre with a tidy ending and easy solutions; its approach is to raise questions, not to answer them. That is it’s power, by breaking so defiantly through our barriers it forces us to confront a side of society that we prefer to skim over or deny.

I defy you to watch this play and then not get caught up in discussing its issues ¿ it will affect you.

All Alone can be seen at 13:00 from 4th to 28th August 2005. Venue 61 (White Belly) at the Smirnoff Underbelly, it is produced by PostScript Theatre.
