HEATH LEDGER Stars In 'THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS'

As another great installment of the CINEMA TUESDAYS, Flux and Nike Sportswear at the Montalban Theater held an exclusive VIP benefit screening of filmmaker Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The event served as a benefit for the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship in honor of the late actor.

As people gathered in frigid LA temperatures and huddled around complimentary boxes of Aussie fave Tim Tam cookies and warm espressos, the Australians In Film committee announced that it was donating the evening’s proceeds to the scholarship. A panel of judges will be determining who will be awarded the scholarship, including one of the film’s stars and Ledger’s friend, Jude Law. The movie hadn’t even begun and handkerchiefs were dabbing at swollen eyes.

I was excited to see a film by one of our most daring and dazzling filmmakers and from a man who has had every possible production nightmare beset him. Lets not forget, his opus film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote was plagued by so many problems – including a natural disaster- that the movie was shut down.  It eventually became the topic for the documentary Lost In LaMancha – a truly chilling film that keeps even the most adept filmmaker awake many sleepless nights. So for Gilliam to pull this film off in the face of such a tragedy is already a true tribute to Ledger and to grit, determination and the creative spirit.

The movie follows an immortal man, Dr. Parnassus, who travels in an old dilapidated circus wagon, trying to entertain the people of contemporary London with his vaudevillian stories. His hidden agenda is to also save a few souls along the way, in order to repay a bet he lost with the devil. Dr. Parnassus is saddled with his immortality – a storyteller and showman who has become obsolete, as no one wants to hear his stories anymore. His antiquated Punch And Judy styled stage cannot compete with London’s bright lights and dazzling technology. Dr. Gilliam err, I mean Parnassus, knows this and feels lost in a world where he will never grow old but will never be new.

Veteran stage actor, Christopher Plummer is great as the fallen monk, Parnassus, bending to all the mortal pressures of drink and wagers. Plummer is joined by his traveling gypsy companions: model Lily Cole, adequate as his fiery red head daughter and stunning in the gypsy meets fleet street costumes. Verne Troyer is cast as the Doctor’s voice of reason – never thought I’d type that sentence. Andrew Garfield almost steals scenes from the veteran matinee idols he is pitted agaisnt as the barker, Anton. Tom Waits chews up the scenery as the devil in Joel-Grey-Cabaret clothing, Mr. Nick. And there is quite a lot of scenery to chew in a Gilliam film.

But the elephant in the room is the role of Tony. Heath Ledger’s last role in The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus is infamously incomplete. That he had three of the world’s leading actors fill in to bring his role to fruition is a testament to what a great actor he was and what a great hole he has left behind.

In fact, though the film is chock full of fantasty, whimsy, scenery and ideas (oh you could trip over the grand ideas), the film seems lonely when Ledger isn’t on screen. Ledger’s first appearance in the film as Tony Liar, is hanging from his neck from a London bridge, an auspicious start to a movie that was almost never finished. It is a shocking fist glimpse of the actor and one that takes your breath away.

Ledger’s Tony Liar character, based partially on Tony Blair and all his duplicity, is a millionaire who raises money for a children’s charity and is ultimately exposed as a fraud. Interesting that Ledger chose this role, as he was always felt fraudulent in the Hollywood spotlight. Eschewing the superstar role, Heath preferred to disappear in a role and simply be an actor. Even if he was greater at it than he ever gave himself credit for.

The Imaginarium in question is a sideshow mirror, which when paying customers pass (or are pushed through it) are transported into a fantasy world which reveals their deepest desires. For a small child it is a giant set of a Candy Land video game. For a rich matron, it is a gondoliered trip down a Nile filled with giant Blahniks and Faberge eggs. Of course there is a battle for the person’s soul at the end of this journey. Dr. Parnassus and Mr. Nick both wrestle for the person to choose the right path. Tony often accompanies these souls and attempts to guide them correctly, sort of as a sexy river Styx escort. As it is each individual’s fantasy and imagination, Tony appears different to each of them. This is how Gilliam was able to solve his leading man crisis.

After Ledger’s death, three box office heart-throbs stepped up and stepped in for Ledger, filming the fantasy sequences in Gilliam’s re-imagined imaginarium scenes. For one woman, her Tony lothario was a lusty Johnny Depp. For another, it was Jude Law climbing the ladder of success, and for Lily Cole’s Valentina, her rascally Tony was Colin Farrell in rare bad boy form.

It is a testament to both Gilliam’s film making and Heath’s reputation to bring all of these people together to create one immense Tony Liar. Unfortunately neither Depp, Law, nor Farrell, while all three of them fun to watch and immensely charming, have the depth that Ledger had.

This Gilliam film is a grand and bright acid trip in the truest sense – there are strands of Munchausen, Time Bandits, and my favorite Terry film, The Fisher King, but there are also nods to classics like Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, King Lear, and of course the great Faustian bargain. Each player in this pantomime has one. Money or love? Life or death? Good or evil? The very same things that plague us daily as we go through our lives, Gilliam plays out for us on this traveling stage that his characters cart around modern London.

It begs the question:

How many of us cart around these questions with us everyday, and how many wrestle with it until it kills us?

It’s hard not to become overly philosophical while watching Heath’s character wrestle for his life when the world knows that he lost that battle a year ago. I was strangely hit hard by the death of Heath Ledger – someone I didn’t know at all.

I don’t normally emote on the passing of a celebrity -  someone I’ve never met, but as the credits rolled on this film, I found myself moved to tears. Maybe, as a filmmaker, I was just so relieved that the film got finished. Perhaps as a performer they were tears of frustration and loss of/for Ledger.

I suppose I felt a connection to someone who was such a strong life force, who attacked his work with conviction and passion. I also can identify with wrestling with insomnia and the seeping black moods that accompany the creative process. The fact that Heath achieved great success in his career is something to admire. But the fact that he pushed himself beyond that and strove to be a better actor, a better artist than what was really required of him – that is where my heart goes out to him. It guts me that this process was part of what led to his demise.

That this film is about a man who has sold his soul for eternal life is eerily prescient. Heath Ledger’s star will live on forever. I, for one, would rather have him among us, living in obscurity.

J’ai trouvé les critiques assez sévères à propos du dernier film de Terry Gilliam. À les entendre, le cinéaste anglais n’aurait gagné ses lettres de noblesse qu’avec Brazil pour ensuite s’embourber dans une réputation d’artiste maudit dont les films auraient moins d’intérêt que leur making-off (on se souvient des fiascos que furent Munchausen et surtout Don Quichotte dont le tournage fut interrompu). Moi qui ne suis pas particulièrement fan du bonhomme, je lui reconnais tout de même une signature et des thèmes qui lui sont propres. L’Imaginarium du Docteur Parnassus est un exemple parfait : lors du visionnage, on ne peut attribuer l’imaginaire qui se déploie sous nos yeux à personne d’autre qu’à Terry Gilliam. Même Tim Burton, à qui on le compare souvent, ne se serait pas envolé aussi loin dans l’abstraction. Alors, pourquoi ôter le titre d’ « auteur » à un cinéaste dont le style est reconnaissable entre mille ?

L’histoire nous emmène en Angleterre parmi les saltimbanques d’un spectacle de rue dirigé par le Docteur Parnassus (Christopher Plummer). Capable de matérialiser les rêves d’autrui, le vieil homme est pourtant loin de rameuter les foules. Les temps sont durs, d’autant plus que sa fille (Lily Cole) approche des 16 ans. Or, il y a des années de cela, il fit un pacte avec le diable (Tom Waits) et lui promit de lui donner l’âme de sa progéniture une fois atteint l’âge en question. C’est alors qu’un soir, la troupe tombe sur Tony (Heath Ledger), un escroc qui tente de remettre sur pied le commerce de Parnassus et, tant qu’à faire, à briser la malédiction qui plane sur sa fille.

Comme toujours chez Gilliam, le scénario mérite un grand coup de sécateur. Bien que touffu, il n’est pas pour autant à ranger parmi les désastres inextricables qu’étaient Les Frères Grimm ou Tideland. L’Imaginarium fonctionne sur l’opposition traditionnelle entre rêve et réalité. Ceci dit, chez Gilliam la différence est difficile à faire tant la réalité ressemble au rêve : des nains et des magiciens s’y promènent, de même que le diable qui parfois passe faire un petit coucou. On serait donc plus tenté de parler d’opposition entre rêve et cauchemar.

Comme toujours, le cinéaste exploite son thème fétiche : l’imagination. En cela, le film fait figure de mise en abyme. L’Imaginarium est un film-nuage, aussi merveilleux qu’insaisissable. Le théâtre de Parnassus rappelle celui des films de Méliès. Gilliam se présente en hériter, et sa fantaisie se veut tout aussi débridée. Les moments les plus merveilleux du film éclatent lorsque le personnage d’Heath Ledger accompagne les clients de l’imaginarium de l’autre côté du miroir. Dans les rêves de Monsieur et  Madame Tout-le-monde, on croise des friandises géantes, des échelles qui montent jusqu’au ciel, des gendarmes en bas résille et des rivières qui se transforment en serpent. C’est extravagant, incohérent, et pourtant on se laisse embarquer. C’est dans la folie pure que le génie de Gilliam atteint son paroxysme.

En revanche, lorsqu’on retombe dans la réalité/cauchemar, l’intrigue patine. Les personnages tombent un à un dans la caricature et finissent par complètement nous échapper. Heath Ledger est seul à faire exception. Le décès de l’acteur en plein milieu du tournage aurait pu pousser le film à rejoindre Don Quichotte dans la fosse des films maudits. Le choix de recourir à trois acteurs différents pour l’incarner dans les scènes rêvées (Johnny Depp, Jude Law et Colin Farrell) confère à son personnage une dimension schismatique inattendue et féérique. C’est finalement quand Gilliam fait preuve des audaces les plus extravagantes que son cinéma gagne en intérêt. Après tout, l’art est un langage universel auquel les fous ont aussi accès. Je déplore d’ailleurs qu’il y en ait si peu.

During 2009 year, “Vogue” magazine created reckless and wonderful photos-projects with the singer Lady Gaga.

At first, these were the simply beautiful and stylish photos of performer in the clothes from the last collections.

The most interesting things began, when magazine start to feel tired of the banal Gaga photos in clothes… In September, Chinese “Vogue” prints something completely different.

Lady Gaga showed the Japanese erotic art of fastening a lady – Shibari, directly on herself. The Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, person who created and realized this project, personally bounded a singer. Interestingly, that when he timidly suggested to string knots on her breast – she consented and also asked for a few additional lessons of this ancient art.

And, finally… in New Year eve, “Vogue” decided to finally fall out with Gaga and crammed her in a burning hot stove.

Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz was chosen to shoot «Little Girl & Boy Lost» – Hansel and Gretel fashion fairy tale inspired by Richard Jones’ production of the 1893 Engelbert Humperdinck opera, opening December 14th at the Metropolitan Opera. Hansel and Gretel are played by actor Andrew Garfield and model Lily Cole. GaGa plays a witch dressed by Marc Jacobs. Throughout the shoot look to see fashionable offerings from Dior, Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Nicolas Ghesquière, Chloé, Nina Ricci, Oscar de la Renta and more. The shoot is classic Leibovitz, very whimsical.

Temaet er inspireret af The Metropolitan Opera’s produktion af Hansel and Gretel, a fashion fairy tale of white frocks unfolds. Lady Gaga giver den gas som den onde heks i Hans og Grete eventyret, iført blomster shorts og paryk, mens hun holder gryde og ske samt i en lille kjole og stort hår, i gang med at blive bagt i ovnen. Hans og Grete figurene er skuespilleren Andrew Garfield og modellen Lily Cole.

Lady Gaga só bomba em editorial porque tem esse visu weirdo, e me incomoda menos que barbarizando nos palcos. Não adianta especular mais – só vazaram essas duas fotos – e o resto do recheio promete! É  a Lady mas ela super pegou boi de ser convidada (sem merecer hein) por Anna Wintour pra Vogue americana de dezembro – super disputada (e com aquela capa das divas do musical Nine). Já devem ter notado que eu tenho uma GIGANTE queda sobre assuntos que envolvem a Lady, bom..
A edição do mês que vem da Vogue americana convidou Lady GaGa, a modelo Lily Cole, e o ator Andrew Garfield para compor uma sessão de fotos clicada por Annie Leibovitz. As fotos ficaram com um clima meio começo da Revolução Industrial pela Europa, o que me deixou meio confusa. Mas ficaram lindas de morrer, com exceção do cabelo da Lily Cole.

E continuando falando na Lady Gaga, as capas dos novos singles dela foram divulgadas nesta sexta-feira. As próximas músicas de trabalho serão “Alejandro” e “Dance in the dark”. Os singles farão parte do álbum The Monster Fame, aquele mesmo que o brinde será uma amostra de cabelo dela hehe e serão lançados no dia 10 de novembro. Ah! Eu acho ela linda demais com o cabelo escuro.

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus arrives for the gents to consider, unfortunately without much favour. They continue into talks about movie budgets and creativity, scary children’s films and whether there will be a shift in the horror genre on the back of Paranormal Activity. They talk about True Blood, The Shield, Good Will Hunting and Sunshine, before a long trailer round-up taking in everything from The White Ribbon to Black Dynamite.

- The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro has finally gone before the MPAA. It got an ‘R’ rating for “bloody horror, violence and gore”

- James Cameron is rumoured to be developing the Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action vehicle Doomsday Protocol for Fox. The ‘event’ film set in the future deals with a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth according to Production Weekly

- Kevin Smith’s buddy cop comedy A Couple of Dicks has a new title that will be announced soon. The first trailer for the film will be attached to every copy of “Sherlock Holmes” when it hits theatres Christmas Day. Unlike his other work, Smith days the film is “not MY movie, [its] a movie I was hired to direct.”

- The 3D sequel Resident Evil: Afterlife has been pushed back several months from August 2010 to a January 14th 2011 release.

- Scott Stewart’s Vampire Western, Priest, starring Paul Bettany has been moved up two months from October to August 27th.

- Producer Wyck Godfrey (“The Twilight Saga”) talks about adapting hit XBox 360 game Gears of War to the big screen and says the film will be “Cloverfield”-esque where we start with the planet pre-Emergence Day and follow the action as the peace is shattered by the Locusts. Makingof have more.

- Joe Penhall (“The Road,” “Enduring Love”) is set to pen an adaptation of John Williams’ 1960 Western novel Butcher’s Crossing for Focus Features says The Hollywood Reporter. Set during the 1870s, the adventure story centers on a man who drops out of Harvard and heads west to the small Kansas town of the title. There, he joins the search for a great buffalo herd. Sam Mendes is considering directing the film.

- Rashida Jones (“Parks and Recreation,” “I Love You, Man”) has joined the cast of David Fincher’s The Social Network for Sony Pictures reports Variety. Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield and Joe Mazzello star in the film which revolves around the founders of the social-networking website Facebook.

- Spoiler TV reports that several roles are out to cast for reshoots on Platinum Dunes’ remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. All the scenes seem to be for a diner scene where the lead character Nancy works and only consist of a few lines at most.

- Jonah Hex is getting another two weeks of reshoots according to Collider. They are currently casting for the new scenes that seem to deal with Jonah’s past.

O Mundo Imaginário do Doutor Parnassus

Ontem fui naquele evento onde colocam uma tela gigante no Jóquei Clube, na Gávea, Rio de Janeiro. (Cada ano eles mudam de nome, ano passado era Vivo Open Air, este ano virou Vale Open Air. Qual será o nome ano que vem?) Era a pré estreia do novo filme do diretor Terry Gilliam, “O Mundo Imaginário do Doutor Parnassus”!

A trama: nos dias de hoje, uma trupe teatral no estilo daquelas que a gente vê em filmes medievais circula por aí. É dirigida pelo Doutor Parnassus, que tem um misterioso pacto com o diabo.

Terry Gilliam tem um estilo visual único – aliás, foi por isso que escolhi este filme para ver na tela gigante. As imagens de sonho, no tal “mundo imaginário” do título, são fantásticas. Figurinos, fotografia, direção de arte, efeitos especiais, o cuidado do diretor neste sentido é enorme, vide obras como “Brazil”, “As Aventuras do Barão Munchausen”, “Os 12 Macacos” e “Medo e Delírio”. Os efeitos especiais de seus filmes já nos tiravam o fôlego numa era pré-computador, e agora, com os ilimitados poderes dos cgi, a sua criatividade atinge patamares nunca antes imaginados.

Gilliam é muito talentoso, mas é um cara azarado. Frequentemente, seus filmes têm problemas na produção. Se “Munchausen” chegou a ser cancelado antes de finalizado, e o filme sobre Dom Quixote que ele tentou fazer nem mesmo ficou pronto, “Doutor Parnassus” perdeu um de seus atores principais. Heath Ledger, que faz Tony, morreu durante as filmagens. Mas a solução encontrada foi muito boa: chamaram outros três atores diferentes, e cada vez que Tony entrava no “mundo imaginário”, ele mudava de cara. Talvez em outro tipo de filme isso não funcionasse, mas aqui, ficou genial! Assim, temos, além de Ledger, outros três Tonys, interpretados por Johnny Depp, Jude Law e Colin Farrell. Além deles, o elenco conta com Christopher Plummer como o Doutor Parnassus, Tom Waits, Lily Cole, Verne Troyer e Andrew Garfield.

O resultado final do filme é meio confuso, não sei se a morte de Ledger teve algo a ver com isso. Mesmo assim, o filme merece ser visto, nem que seja só pelo visual deslumbrante.

Por fim, acredito que todos aqui sabem que Terry Gilliam é ex-membro do Monty Python, lendário grupo de humor inglês. Pois bem, uma das cenas é a cara do Monty Python, aquela que mostra policiais cantando e dançando. Muito boa esta cena!
