Samsung has put all of its cards on the table and released the GALAXY Tab 10.1. The thinnest and lightest 10.1″ tablet to hit the market so far. This is a salvo fired across Apples bow, Samsung finally has hand. With fast hardware, the latest Android Honeycomb OS and a beautiful hi-res display Samsung has all of the ammunition it needs to take the fight right to Apple.

The iPad 2 is the undisputed king of tablets at the moment and will naturally be the yard stick for any new tablet entering the market. The GALAXY Tab 10.1 is 2mm thinner and 15 grams lighter than it’s rival so off to a good start. Nvidis1GHz Dual Core Tegra2 CPU and graphics chip is as good as ARM CPU’s get at the moment. The 1280×800 resolution again just beats the iPad 2s 1024×768 resolution. Onboard DDR memory is another win for Samsung 1GB versus 512MB, a handy advantage for multi-tasking. front and rear-facing cameras are also standard. 4G wireless is a win for Samsung, not a practical win with 4G coverage being limited, so while it is 4G chances are it will run on a 3G network. Galaxy versus iPad 2 purely on specs looks like a win for Samsung, it doesn’t win the hardware spec battle hands down but it does win.

Samsung is a key Google (s goog) partner, having been the showcase Android device provider at this month’s Google I/O developer event, where all attendees received a Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. The potential delay of Acer’s 7-inch tablet reinforces the idea that some Google partners have earlier access to the Android code than others, but could also mean that smaller slates aren’t suited for Google’s tablet platform.

Motorola(s mmi) was likely the first device maker to gain such access. As Google unveiled Android 3.1 during its developer conference, Motorola announced that its Xoom tablets for Verizon’s (s vz) network would soon receive it via software update. That update has been rolling out since then, with many Xoom owners able to take advantage of the improvements. The Samsung tablets handed out during the same event didn’t have Android 3.1, but the company said it would be “coming soon.” However, the product page for the new 10.1-inch tablet now reflects the device will ship with version 3.1 when it launches in “a few days” according to Samsung Mobile’s Facebook page. Until then, here’s a first look at the device:

[ooyala=liMTNnMjpBYTg9xRLgZoF319HCTk85XZ]

Samsung’s situation is a sharp contrast from that of Acer’s. I recently reviewed the Acer Iconia Tab A500, another 10.1-inch Android 3.0 tablet and found it to be a decent device for those on a budget due to the $449 price tag. But like other Android 3.0 devices, it suffers from some issues directly related to Google’s operating system. Android 3.1 should help, and an Acer representative told me via email that the A500 would gain Android 3.1 by the end of May. However, various reports indicate the upgrade is pushed back into June. Earlier this morning, Acer confirmed with me that’s the case.

That may have repercussions for the A100, a 7-inch Android 3.0 tablet that was expected to launch as early as April. DigiTimes today sources industry contacts as saying the A100 is now scheduled to launch in August or September. The cause for the reported delay? DigiTimes says Acer is struggling with app compatibility on the smaller screen and will resolve the issues with Android 3.1. My Acer contact wouldn’t confirm this development, saying earlier today that the company doesn’t comment on unannounced products.

If DigiTimes correct, it suggests Acer may not yet have, or only recently gained, access to Android 3.1 from Google. That’s a possibility, but it also causes me to wonder if Android 3.0, or 3.1 for that matter, simply isn’t suited to a lower-resolution display. Google designed a completely new user interface specifically for large-screened devices, although there are some features that can help bring the operating system to smaller screens. The Fragments API, for example, arrived in Android 3.0 and allows apps to be independent of screen size or resolution.

Since Android 3.1 doesn’t bring new user interface features that would benefit smartphones or smaller tablets, access to the code maybe be irrelevant. Google has already announced the next major version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, will unify the mobile platform across large screened tablets and smartphones with smaller displays. Seven-inch slates fit squarely in the middle of those two extremes, so my educated guess is that those smaller tablets will see an optimized user experience with that version of Android, currently targeted for the fourth quarter of this year. Personally, I find the prospect of waiting a little sad, because I prefer the added mobility of a 7-inch tablet over a larger device.

Motorola Xoom Wifi is officially on sale in Malaysia thanks to Maxis. Not only that, Maxis is nice e

Motorola Xoom Wifi is officially on sale in Malaysia thanks to Maxis. Not only that, Maxis is nice enough to put two units of Motorola Xoom Wifi for demo. And lucky me, I able to use any of the demo devices at Maxis Centre during lunch time as I work in KLCC.

Motorola Xoom is the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb device. As the matter, it was the Google flagship device for Honeycomb when it was announced in January and went on sale in February 2011. Honeycomb, the long awaited upgrade to Android for big screen devices, was a rushed job.

Xoom packs magnificient hardwares. Motorola put everything in there; a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 10.1-inch multitouch capacitive screen sporting 1280×800 pixels resolution, 32GB internal flash memory with external microSD slot, 3-axis accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, gyroscope and barometer. It also have 2 megapixels front facing camera and a 5 megapixels rear autofocus camera with the ability to capture 720p movie with autofocus at a stable 30 fps. And yeah, there is two led flash to help take picture in the dark.

When I hold Xoom the first, I immediately feel that it is slightly heavier wheh compared to iPad 2, but lighter than the original iPad. The screen is a bit dark eventhough I cranked it up to the max. It feels nice in my hands. Only the volume buttons protruding on its side. I find it weird that Motorola put the the ‘On’ button at the rear of the device. When I first got my hands on Xoom, it really took me a while to find the ‘On’ button.

What’s great about Android that you can have multiple workspace or homescreen which you can load them up with multitudes of widgets. I can have social network widgets on one screen, email updates on one screen and entertaiment on another screen. Well, almost the same like the previous android version, on honeycomb it looks a lot nicer, almost 3D like and the graphic s hardware accelerated. However, flicking from one screen to another, you’ll notice that is it a little lag. Not as smooth as iPad 2 or Playbook, or even the original iPad.
Hopefully, this can be fixed with an update to Android 3.1 soon.

All in all, Motorola Xoom is really a great hardware marred by a rushed OS. Thus, I am hoping Google will do Xoom some justice with Android 3.1, coming in June. 10-inches tablet never really hit the spot for me. I would prefer the smaller tablets such as Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ or Blackberry Playbook.

Motorola Xoom Wifi is retail alt RM2,499.00 at Maxis, with free Motorola Defy upon 24months commitment of 3GB data plan. But you can also find Motorola Xoom Wifi for RM2,099.00 at Sen Heng.

Jen-Hsun Huang, the CEO of graphics giant Nvidia, sees Android-driven tablets powered by his company

Jen-Hsun Huang, the CEO of graphics giant Nvidia, sees Android-driven tablets powered by his company’s speedy processors overtaking Apple’s iPad in about the same time-frame it took Android smartphones to beat the iPhone, he told Reuters:

The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we’re talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets.

The comment is a 180-degree turn from Huang’s previous analysis which blamed lackluster sales of Android tablets on the lack of software richness, sub-par marketing and high price points, to name a few. A Jefferies analysis (see tablet below the fold) echoes this sentiment, conceding that a small percentage of users are currently considering buying an Android tablet over iPad. Nevertheless, Android tablets are expected to catch up next year, the survey notes.

If Android slates are to zoom past Apple’s device, Huang now argues, more apps are needed, especially high-quality games and entertainment titles. He suggested that Android vendors iterate Honeycomb devices using Nvidia’s next-generation Tegra processor code-named Kal-El. Plugged-in sources describe the chip as a screamer…

Also known as the Tegra 3 platform, this piece of silicon marries a netbook-ready CPU with four processing cores based on ARM’s blueprints to Nvidia’s high-performing graphics unit, all on a single die with ultra-low power requirements. It can outperform an Intel Core 2 Duo while sipping less battery power than the current dual-core Tegra 2 processor. In terms of graphics, the chip can drive extreme HD resolutions of 2560×1600. Already five major smartphone vendors and five computer manufacturers built their gadgets around Tegra 3 platform, Huang told the news gathering organization.

PocketNow claims first Tegra 3 devices are to be expected on market this summer. Another key component of the upcoming Android tablet avalanche is Honeycomb 3.1, released at Google I/O 2011 earlier this month. Huand described this improved version of Google’s operating system written with slates in mind as being “just delightful”.

If you missed big announcements from today’s Google I/O 2011 keynote, don’t sweat

If you missed big announcements from today’s Google I/O 2011 keynote, don’t sweat – here’s your recap of key takeaways. Google executives first touted 100 million Android activations so far and about 400,000 new devices being activated each day. Other mind-boggling stats include 200,000 free and paid applications on Android Market and 4.5 billion downloads since Android’s launch less than three years ago. That was just a warm-up for big announcements, though…

They proceeded by showing off some of the capabilities of the upcoming Honeycomb 3.1 update. Your highlights include APIs to access USB peripherals such as mice, keyboards, joysticks, gamepads (including PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 game controllers) and other accessories, new media features for VoIP, push-to-talk, videoconferencing and audio streaming and more. Enhancements for end-users include smoother UI animations, updated holographic interface, the new launcher, expandable Recent Apps list for better multitasking, resizable home screen widgets, WiFi connectivity even with the display turned off and a bunch of tweaks in standard Browser, Calendar, Contacts and Email apps, to name a few.

Android 3.1 homescreen

Honeycomb 3.1 will be rolling out to Xoom 3G devices over the next few weeks, Google said. The company also previewed Ice Cream Sandwich, the next Android release due by the fourth quarter. In addition to a new tasty logo, shown below, Ice Cream Sandwich will bring smartphones on par with Honeycomb 3.1 tablets in the features department, Google promised.

It’s also their first attempt at solving OS fragmentation issues by working with select carriers and handset vendors to ensure smooth firmware upgrades for customers. Specifically, Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola and AT&T joined the initiative. Customers buying new devices from these partners are guaranteed to receive the latest Android platform upgrades for eighteen months after the device is first released, “as long as the hardware allows.” It’s a flexible definition, if you ask us. As always, the devil will be in details which were few and far between at the conference.

Google also flipped the switch on a long-rumored invite-only music locker that lets you store 20,000 songs for on-demand streaming to computers and Android devices. Google Music sports Instant Mixes, basically iTunes Genius-like mixes of songs that go great together. There’s also offline mode and automatic sending of changes made to playlists on an Android device to your computer via the cloud and vice versa. The company also unveiled Android Market movie rentals (starting at $1.99) available across Android devices and computers. Movies can be “pinned” for offline viewing and will initially work on the Xoom. Support for more devices, including Android 2.2 phones, is “coming soon”, Google promised.

Other tidbits include Android Open Accessory initiative to help develop accessories that work across all Android devices, Android@Home that allows Android apps to discover, connect and communicate with appliances and devices in your home and a preview of Project Tungsten, an Android device for the new Music service that provides greater control over music playback within the Android@Home network.

At Google’s I/O developers conference today, the company confirmed that Google TV will receive

At Google’s I/O developers conference today, the company confirmed that Google TV will receive a major upgrade to Android 3.1 this summer, as well as access to apps in the Android Market.

That’s good news for the handful of Google TV users out there (myself included) who have been waiting for apps and a more polished user interface. It’s also a sign that Android 3.1 and beyond — which also includes improvements for tablets — will finally let Google fulfill its ambitions of delivering Android on practically any device.

Mike Cleron from Google’s Android development team says that developers will be able take advantage of the existing Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” SDK to create apps for Google TV. He also said that new Google TV products are on the horizon from Samsung, Logitech (the first true GTV partner), Vizio and Sony.

The addition of apps could breathe new life into Google TV, which has thus far relied on HTML5-powered websites optimized for its interface. In my review, I was impressed by the potential of Google TV, and it seems like the summer update may finally unleash that potential.

Hopefully by this summer, Google will be able to offer cheaper GTV hardware — perhaps around $100 — that can compete with Roku’s cheap internet video devices.

Currently in the Android space you have two operating systems, Gingerbread and Honeycomb. The next version of android which is rumored to be named Ice Cream Sandwich, is going to sandwich those two versions together into one version that works on both a tablet and a phone.* We don’t know anything more than that, but I’m sure that all will be revealed next week during Google IO. You can expect all of the answers to the burning questions you have to be covered right here. Will Ice Cream Sandwich be Android 3.1? Will the Dell Streak run the phone or tablet version(If it ever gets the update…) ? Is there going to be a Google Music service? Also, the answers to questions you haven’t even fathomed yet, so stay tuned.
