Die zweite Runde der Android Developer Challenge 2 ist seit gestern beendet.
In dieser Runde konnten die besten 20 Applikationen in den 10 Kategorien noch mals bewertet werden. Insgesamt standen also in dieser Runde 200 Applikationen zur Wahl.

Geplant ist das am 30. November die Gewinner bekannt gegeben werden.(Quelle)

Ich habe auch an dieser Runde teilgenommen und einige Apps reviewt. Am interessantes fande ich persönlich die App “Fusion WebServer – Phone2Web” in der Kategorie Productivity/Tools. Diese App beinhaltet einen WebServer mit dem man über den Browser vom PC aus einige Daten vom Handy auslesen kann. Zum Beispiel kann das Telefonbuch eingesehen werden oder SMS versendet werden.

Google veranstaltet nun schon die zweite Android Developer Challenge in der Android Apps mit Preisen($) ausgezeichnet werden.
Diese Challenge ist in zwei Runden unterteilt und die erste wurde mittlerweile schon beendet. Laut Google sind für alle Apps schon mehr als 100 Bewertungen vorhanden. Jetzt werden diese gesichtet und dann kommen die 20 besten Apps pro Kategorie in die zweite Runde.

Im Android Market gibt es auch eine App mit der die eingereichten Programme reviewt werden können. Dazu wird das Programm auf dem Device installiert, man kann es dann ausprobieren und sobald man sein Review abgesendet hat, wird das Programm wieder deinstalliert.

Ich habe in dieser ersten Runde auch schon einige Programme reviewt. Einige waren sehr viel versprechend, bin schon gespannt ob ich diese in der zweiten Runde wieder sehe.

The developer race for Google’s (s goog) $250,000 grand prize is on again. Judging began today in the second Android Developer Challenge, which will see the first-place developer pocket the quarter million-dollar award. Users can download submitted apps through the Android Market and score offerings based on Google’s criteria; the top 20 apps in each of 10 categories will move onto a second round of user and expert judging next month.

The online giant is once again using a massive roll of cash as a carrot for developers. Here’s the prize breakdown for round two:

For each of the 10 categories:

• 1st prize: $100,000
• 2nd prize: $50,000
• 3rd prize: $25,000

Overall (across all categories):

• 1st prize: $150,000 (so the overall winner receives $250,000)
• 2nd prize: $50,000 (overall winner receives$150,000)
• 3rd prize: $25,000 (overall winner receives$125,000)

Among the many apps vying for a taste of the prize money is Mippin’s Buzz Deck, an offering that enables access to multiple web services, content and information through a single interface. The U.K.-based developer sent us a quick video clip of the app here:

Blind

El departamento de I+D+i de Alea Technology se enorgullece de presentar Blind.

Blind es una aplicación realizada para terminales Android. El objetivo es que personas con deficiencias visuales puedan utilizar un móvil Android.

Esta aplicación, aún en su versión beta, será presentada al Android Developer Challenge II y ya está disponible para su descarga desde el market.

Blind QR

Utilizando las librerías TTS (Text To Speech) de Google, conseguimos que el móvil guíe al usuario a través de las opciones del sistema, indicándole en cada momento la pantalla en la que se encuentra y las opciones disponibles.

Blind en HTC Magic

Si el usuario no tiene descargadas las librerías necesarias, le saldrá un mensaje para que se las descargue automáticamente. Las futuras versiones de Android traerán las librerías TTS preinstaladas, según recientes publicaciones.

A continuación explicaremos el funcionamiento de la aplicación.

Características

Blind funciona en modo apaisado, para facilitar el uso del trackball.

Para controlar Blind, basta con usar el trackball y las esquinas superiores de la pantalla. El trackball servirá para navegar por las distintas opciones de los menús y para seleccionar una de ellas.

-Llamadas

Con esta opción el usuario podrá insertar un número de teléfono para realizar una llamada.

-Contactos

En esta opción el usuario podrá escuchar los nombres de los contactos de su agenda y seleccionar uno de ellos para realizar una llamada.

-Mensajes de Texto

Aquí el usuario seleccionará uno de sus contactos y escribirá el mensaje de texto seleccionando las letras del mismo. Al escuchar las letras y símbolos definidos irá montando el mensaje a enviar.

-Mensajes de Voz

El usuario seleccionará uno de sus contactos, grabará el mensaje de voz y hará el envío.

Los usuarios de Blind podrán acceder a la opción Buzon de Entrada para recuperar los 5 últimos mensajes recibidos.

-Música

El usuario podrá acceder a su lista de canciones, escuchar los títulos de las mismas y reproducirlas.

-Utilidades

El usuario podrá seleccionar el idioma (Inglés o Español).

La opción ¿Dónde estoy? indicará a través del GPS la dirección en la que se encuentra el usuario.

Con la opción Lavandería el usuario podrá sacar una foto de la prenda que elija, para que el sistema le indique de que color es. Así evitará mezclar los colores al hacer la colada.

Con la opción WiFi, el usuario podrá activar o desactivar el WiFi de su dispositivo.

Con la opción Estado de la Batería, el usuario escuchará el porcentaje de bataría que le queda.

-Configuración

El usuario podrá configurar su email de Gmail para el envío y recepción de mensajes de voz.

Ejemplo de Fucionamiento

Llamadas

En la pantalla de llamadas, el usuario podrá seleccionar el número de teléfono al que quiere llamar. Esto se hará utilizando el trackball. Moviéndolo arriba o abajo el usuario escuchará un número. Para seleccionarlo, tiene que pulsar el trackball. De este modo irá marcando los números. Si desea borrar el último número insertado, ha de mover el trackball a la izquierda.

Llamadas en Blind

Si quiere escuchar el número completo antes de realizar la llamada, sólo tiene que pulsar sobre la esquina superior derecha de la pantalla.

Para volver al menú principal, sólo tiene que pulsar sobre la esquina superior izquierda de la pantalla.

Cuando complete el número a llamar, sólo tiene que mover el trackball a la derecha.

Con este ejemplo describimos la usabilidad de la aplicación. Pretendemos que sea lo más intuitivo y cómodo posible, para que su uso resulte casi natural.

T-Mobile G1

I am in need of a new car, so I spent my Saturday out and about test driving different cars. Now this is the first time I’ve had to shop for a car myself, so I was a little naive at first, to say the least. One thing I picked up on really quickly was how the car salesmen try to categorize you from the moment they see you. The way you dress is the first indicator they get, and just the tip of the iceberg. Then they proceed to the small talk and seemingly garbage chit chat that you take for granted at social functions you desperately do not want to be a part of.

You may or may not notice, but the salesmen will start slipping small, unobtrusive questions into the conversation that seem to be in line with standard “How do you do?” etiquette. But questions along the lines of, “So, RT, I see your area code differs from mine. Where are you living now?” and “Do you want some water? How was work this week?” The answer to the latter question is usually negative, because for some reason or another there appears to me to be an unspoken social construct that all people shall say work sucks, maybe because no one wants to be that one jerk who talks about how awesome his job is. But that’s a conversation for another time.

Back to the story: At this point the salesperson has just heard you had a terrible/great/ok/baffling/ weekend, so the person replies, “Oh that sucks/is interesting/sounds about right/whatever. What exactly do you do?” That last question is one everyone asks you, so it’s pretty trivial right? Maybe… and maybe not. That salesperson is not just trying to make a new friend with small talk. He/she wants to know if you can afford to pay for the car you’re eyeing. Finding out where you live is another indicator of what you might be able to afford (or your priorities in life, I suppose). So is seeing if you’re married, if you have kids, what you currently drive, whether you rent or own, and a million other questions really. It’s not that hard for them to peg you, nor should you really try to hide it.

I feel like I’m straying off topic again. Maybe I’ll save the rest of the car-purchasing experiences for future posts and just get to the point now.

So I’m talking to a salesman (let’s call him Bobby) and his phone goes off, which he promptly answers, and I see that he’s got the new(ish) T-Mobile G1. Out of curiosity I ask him if he likes it. FYI, Bobby has been cold to me since he saw me. I can tell he wants to get me the hell out of the way (I do not dress up or appear wealthy for this stuff). But all of a sudden, he goes off! “Oh MY GOD I love this phone! This is the best phone ever! I used to have a PDA before this and… yea… well, this thing is great, it even saves me money!” [italics mine]

Here are the thoughts that run through my head immediately:
-Hmm, he seems receptive to this question. Maybe he’ll be nicer now and we can have an enjoyable test drive.
-Does he know anything about phones? Because I know a fair amount.
-Last time I checked, this phone still cost at least a few hundred dollars. How does he save money with this phone??

I, of course, ask Bobby how exactly he manages to save money with a very expensive piece of equipment like that. You know what he tels me? The G1 has an application (either pre-loaded or downloadable) that lets you scan the bar codes of products and then compare its price to the price listed at other stores. I’d heard of it before from the Android Developer Challenge 1. So he went to Home Depot to buy a lock and decided, “Hey let’s see what this thing costs at Ace Hardware or Lowe’s.” Lo and behold, Ace Hardware was selling it for $4 cheaper. At this point a store employee comes by and asks Bobby why he’s taking pictures of a barcode, so Bobby shows the guy and says, “So I’m going to go to Ace Hardware now.” Not wanting to lose business, the employee counters by saying he’ll take 10% off the listed price. Winner!

To make a long post short: If you have a G1 go get that app, and the next time you’re shopping at a big chain store go see how much that store’s competitors sell whatever you’re buying for. If it’s cheaper, go tell someone. They might make you a deal. That was not Bobby’s first deal.
