BB sangat keren, makanya semua orang mau memilikinya, bahkan yang tidak mampu beli yg asli beli replikanya

Apakah BB tidak canggih?
BB sangat canggih, servernya hebat… berkembangnya pesat

Apakah BB tidak bermanfaat?
Sangat bermanfaat, dipakai kerja sangat membantu..

Lebih dari itu BB memperkenalkan kepada masyarakat kita dunia lain, yaitu email, internet , chatting dan social networking. Better than iklan internet
masuk desa.

Kalau ada penghargaan dari negara untuk orang2 yang membuat kemajuan bagi
negara, saya mengusulkan BB dimasukkan di dalamnya, BB memberikan bukti
nyata kepada masyarakat ada teknologi maju yang harus kita ikuti dan kuasai

Ketika pertama saya memegang Magic (android dari HTC, HTC Magic), saya merasa ada sebuah "klik"

Masih ingat Micah Sanders? karakter di film seri Heroes yang bisa bicara
dengan mesin dan komputer?
Itu yang saya inginkan ketika memegang android pertama kali, ingin berbicara dengan "mitos masa depan" ini.

Masih butuh beberapa lama sampai saya bisa memiliki sebuah android dan mulai
mendalaminya.
Akhirnya saya bawa 2 device, 1 BB dan 1 Android.

Akhirnya mulai, setiap malam sebelum tidur, android adalah benda terakhir
yang saya pegang dan benda pertama kali yang saya ambil ketika bangun.
Kalau dulu email teman2 dan bbm yang berlangsung hingga malam yang membuat saya masih memegang bb sampai akhir tidur, kali ini karena saya ingin
berbicara dengan android , mengenal karakternya, kemampuannya.

Saya merasa BlackBerry kalau analogi kendaraan adalah sebuah mobil Kijang.
Bisa mengangkut banyak anggota keluarga, the more the merrier, aa, teteh,
paman, bibi, tante, oom, kakek , nenek semua bisa kita bawa dalam bbm nya
Bisa dipakai mampir ke undangan, bisa dipakai ngantor, nganter anak sekolah,
bisa dibawa liburan, bahkan ke pasar (makanya dari keluarga paling kaya yang punya bentley atau RR, sampe keluarga biasa , biasanya punya Kijang, setidaknya kata yang kaya, untuk ke pasar..)

Android seperti sebuah Hummer, Humvee, kendaraan 4×4 offroad atau sebuah
Land Rover. Yang dia tidak mampu adalah membawa semua aa , teteh, paman, bibi dll tumplek blek dalam bbm

Tapi kalau anda ajak berlibur, dia bisa sampai ke ujung pantai, kalau anda
bawa ke gunung , dia bisa diajak masuk ke dalamnya, kalau dia diajak ke
pasar, bisa diajak ke tempat paling becek. Kalau anda ajak ngantor, dia bisa
parkir di atas trotoar walau parkiran penuh.

BlackBerry sudah penuh sesak, ketika rekan2 kirim attachment gambar,
tertatih tatih saya mendownload, ketika rekan memberi link url , tertatih
tatih saya membuka.

Ketika ada yang harus di download, berbagai macam trik harus dikerahkan
supaya bisa mengatasi hambatan batasan download. Ketika ada link youtube,
saya ter[aksa tutup pesannya.

BlackBerry sudah mengubah banyak kebiasaan orang, dulu saya kalau pulang
kerja, buka komputer download email dan balas via outlook, setelah ada BB,
outlook tidak pernah disentuh lagi. Semua saya depend di BB. Sampai akhirnya saya mengikuti keinginan BB, limitasi.

Android tidak semudah BB, mengetik di android melatih kesabaran lebih
daripada belajar mengetik di BB storm. Padahal kita sudah biasa ngetik di
BB. Saya juga tau ini jawaban ketika banyak orang bertanya, kenapa banyak
pemilik android belum lama pakai sudah jual? Pertama they miss BBM, ke dua
mereka ngga tahan ngetik nya

Jawaban ketiga adalah mereka belum tahu android bisa di push kemana, macet
ngantri di dalem Kijang sambil BBM dengan rekan2 dianggap lebih nyaman
daripada , naik Humvee yang bisa lewatin kemacetan karena bisa dipakai naik
ke trotoar , lewatin banjir dan shortcut via semak belukar.

*Jadi maksud anda BBM ngga bagus?

Tidak, BBM sangat bagus, termasuk salah satu arena chit chat paling hebat.*

Trus Android punya yang lebih hebat dari BBM?

Tidak, android tidak punya….

Jadi kenapa tinggalkan BBM , padahal orang2 rasanya dunia runtuh ketika
kontak BBM nya hilang karena gagal upgrade?

Begini jawaban menurut saya:
Dulu ketika saya kecil, waktu terasa lama, hari demi hari berlangsung
lambat, libur sekolah 1 bulan, wuih…rasanya tidak habis2. Pulang sekolah
masih sempat puas main. Suah mandi sore masih sempat main lagi.
Tetapi sekarang tidak, hari2 berlalu sangat cepat.

BBM pertama kali sangat menyenangkan, tapi lama2 diperhatikan obrolannya
mulai tidak terlalu penting.
Kalau berteman dengan tukang jualan, tiap hari di bombardir jualannya:
Barang baru masuk, x, y z bla bla bla
Kalau ketemu customer: pak minta pin BBM nya, nanti sudah dikasih, ngga
kenal waktu tanya ini tanya itu, kalau sedang sibuk tidak dijawab, BUZZ
berkali kali.
Belum mereka yang begitu sosialita dan penyebar segala berita, dari si A
saya dapet broadcast message: hati-hati kalau terima ym dari si X, bisa
bikin BB hang bla bla bal.
Ngga lama isi yang sama saya dapet dari si B
trus si C, trus si D.
Belum ada pesan yang dengan akhiran: sebarkan pesan ini ke 10 teman lagi
atau lebih supaya kamu tidak kena bencana. Bla bla bla…
TIba 2 saya dapet pesan dari miss X, yang saya tidak kenal, ternyata dia
sebenarnya miss S yang baru saja mengganti namanya dengan sederet icon hati,
smiley dll.
Then I feel it’s not for me anymore.

Di android tidak ada yang bisa buzz saya di google talk
Tidak ada yang bisa lihat saya sudah baca pesannya atau belum, kalau
dimarahin kenapa belum di balas? saya tinggal berkelit belum baca…
Ketika waktu senggang, saya lebih suka google talk secukupnya, tulis email
dan baca rss.

Android punya widget rss, yang tidak sepotong sepotong
Saya cape kalau harus baca rss di bb, sudah sepotong baca full story harus
masuk web nya dan laaaammmmmbatttt… sampe waktu menunggu lebih lama dari bacanya.

Setiap hari saya bisa baca informasi teknologi terbaru cukup dari rss yang
sudah ada potongan gambarnya.

Kalau dapet link youtube saya langsung bisa menikmati tanpa jeda, bahkan
bisa lihat youtube related nya. Rasanya senang nonton youtube, karena di pc
juga pakai speedy youtube terengah engah. Dan semenjak paki BB youtube
menjadi barang asing untuk saya.

Kalau dapet link url, saya tidak ragu2 membukanya, karena dalam sekejap
nongol di depan, full site, tanpa dikurang2i.

Kalau di BB bisa full site, misal pakai opera, bolt, tapi ketika di baca,
geser kiri geser kanannya PITA (pain in the ass…upss sorry) belum lag
nunggu fullsitenya muncul.

Di android ketika saya besarkan dengan geser jari, huruf2 langsung menyusun
rapi ke bawah, dan tinggal geser pakai jari ke bawah.
Belum kalau sitenya mengandung Flash…

Buka website sekarang menjadi kesenangan saya, bahkan kalau harus download
saya download dengan gembira, tinggal klik kaya di pc.

Karena android dibuat oleh Google, saya mulai lihat visinya ke depan sebagai
gadget segala informasi. Sedikit sedikit ada icon share, kalau web bagus
atau isi rss menarik, saya tinggal klik share, mau di share kemana? gmail,
email lainnya, FB, twitter, delicious? dll

Dan upload foto 3 mega ke FB is a snap, sebentar beres, kalau di BB hmmmm…
bbm aja sekarang kirim gambar musti accept, udah accept masih expired pula.
I love market. Android market berjibun dan bertambah terus apps tiap hari,
dari yang simpel sampai aneh. ngga ada keraguan untuk mencoba, karena
downloadnya sudah free , cepat pula, dan kalau ngga suka buangnya juga
gampang. Bejibun softaware dari yang amazing sampe yang ngga guna ada
disana.

Saya ngga pusing soal theme, soal background.
Semuanya ada di luar sana.
Sekarang sedang musim hujan, kalau saya membayangkan di negeri 4 musim
sedang salju. Ah iseng saya mau background saya hamparan salju dengan pohon2 cemara.
Maka saya hanya buka software background dan dia menyajikan bermacam macam foto bagus online sudah dipilih dan sudah sesuai format ukurannya, tinggal di pilih dan use it as background. Nanti malem mau ganti lagi, silahkan,
tidak perlu bawa gambar2 dalam memory mu.

Sesudah pilih tema yang cocok, background yang cocok, ya tinggal susun icon2
dan widget2 yang sesuai, semuanya personal dan tidak membosankan.
Kalau ganti theme di BB, seringkali jadi lost mana software yang kita mau
pakai, karena iconnya sudah berubah, susunannya harus sesuai kemauan pembuat tema.

Pekerjaan saya mengharuskan saya kerja sampai malam, ketika pulang saya
kadang ingin melepas penat , nongkrong ngopi di warung, dan lihat mood, ah
saya pengen denger lagu2 dulu, maka saya stel saja radio 24 jam online
seluruh dunia yang menyajikan lagu yang cocok, sambil saya baca komik di
android.

Dulu saya pernah pakai iPhone karena saya pikir wah baca komik asik di
iphone tinggal besarin gambarnya snappy. Tapi ternyata hanya pembesaran dan
tidak merapikan resolusi, jadi percuma gambar komik jadi buram. Dan masukin
ke dalam iPhone nya juga PITA, dikit2 sync itunes.
Di Android gambar dibesarkan kemudian resolusi ditampilkan sesuai ukuran
gambar, jadi enak bisa dibaca dan jelas, tinggal geser kiri geser kanan baca
frame per frame komik.

Saya teringat, jika anda2 adalah makhluk malam, yang tidur sangat larut, apa
yang harus dilakukan ketika teman2 chat sudah tertidur?
Dengan android saya masih asik download lagu, baca informasi terbaru, nonton
youtube, nyoba2 software, sampai mata tak kuat lagi.

Dan saya tidak pusing sekarang dengan backup kontak saya, semua ada di
google. Sekarang saya mau coba android baru atau mau ganti rom, saya
langsung kerjakan, karena sekejap kemudian data saya balik lagi.
Tapi 3000 kontak di jave saya tidak berhasil di upload ke google walau sudah
pake google sync dan menggunakan 3 provider ditinggal semalaman, entah
jalaurnya muter2 atau memang jave saya sudah uzur

Kemudian ketika saya bilang, this is the last day saya pakai layanan BB,
karena bis saya sudah jatuh tempo.

Saya cinta BB, tapi seperti pepatah tidak ada hamba yang bisa mengabdi
kepada 2 tuan

Saya bukan orang yang sanggup bawa 7 hape seperti mr B:-) atau bawa 3 BB
yang aktif semua seperti Mr Joh :-p , cdma esia yang kecil saja saya berikan
ke pegawai.

Saya hanya ingin bawa 1 device, yang bisa memenuhi mostly kebutuhan saya,
jiwa saya. Akhirnya saya memilih melengserkan BB yang sudah dari jaman
bayarnya 700rb dan scroll samping saya sudah miliki.Tunggu sampe BB evolusi
atau beli license WebOS…(ya kan oom wi

Buat yang mau coba android, saya hanya bisa bilang, miliki dulu, coba
kenali, coba "bicara" seperti micah.

Pakai cara keras untuk menguasai ketikannya, tinggalkan seminggu BB di laci
karena memang ngetik di BB itu mudah dan nyaman.

Jangan under estimate dengan diri anda bahwa anda ngga akan bisa ngetik
cepat di touchscreen, your mind is your weakness.

Ingat dulu jaman nokia seri 3 yang tombolnya kaya pencetan telepon jadul,
melingkar? Dulu saya bisa menguasainya, berarti sekarang lebih mudah
Ingat saja, mendaki ke puncak gunung butuh usaha, tapi ketika anda sampai di
puncak dan lihat matahari terbit, semua lelah terbayar, matahari terbit di
puncak gunung jauh lebih indah daripada dibalik monas

I have used the Motorola Cliq as my primary phone for 3 weeks.  Previous to this, I have used the HTC G1, and the MyTouch (HTC Ion) for extended periods of time.  I am going to review the phone from the standpoint of upgrading from the G1 (although my review will be informative for new users as well).

Overall, I think it is a pretty good phone, well built, with some great software and hardware enhancements, but there are some limitations that made this phone less than perfect for me.

Pros

• Hardware design (durability, and appearance)
• Blur (UI enhancements, and integrated social features for the most part)
• Overall snappiness of phone
• Camera

Cons

• Phone Stability
• Blur (in particular the contacts integration)
• Keyboard
• No support for Android 1.6

Hardware improvements of the Cliq over the G1

• Both phones have identical screens, and processors (which the same configuration as the MyTouch and a variety of other phones too)
• More memory for applications
• 3.5mm headphone jack
• Light and proximity sensors
• Bigger battery (and better battery life)
• Higher Megapixel Camera

Hardware:

I think the hardware is great.  The industrial design of the phone is terrific – the phone looks great (especially the rounded corners, and titanium accents), is a great size, and feels solid.  Motorola has always built tank-like phones, and this one is no exception.  It is heavy, and feels comfortable in the hand.  The sliding mechanism for the keyboard has a great feel, and the buttons are comfortable (but I am not a fan of their soft-nature, I don’t personally like the feel or response of them).

Kudos on including a 3.5 mm jack, and including an array of dedicated buttons.  Especially good, is the hardware button to silence the phone (which should be mandatory on all cell phones).  I wish they used standard mini-USB as their charging port, instead they use micro.  Since we are talking about mandatory hardware requirements, I think all phone manufacturers should be required to use the same port, so all my devices can charge with the same cord!

The size of the phone is great.  It is comfortable in the hand, and fits in a shirt or pants pocket easily.  On first inspection, it looks to be thinner, and a little wider than the G1, but when I took pictures to compare them together, I realized that they are almost exactly the same size (which surprised me).   Here are the pictures comparing the 2 phones:

The Camera

The camera on this phone works pretty good.  It focuses quickly, and manages to take pretty good pictures (in good to moderate light).   I do wish they included a hardware flash, for low light conditions. Overall, it is a huge improvement over the terrible camera on the G1.  Here is a picture taken with the G1, and one with the Cliq (with the exact same lighting and other conditions), for comparison (the quality difference between the 2 cameras is clear):

The Keyboard

I am of the opinion that a smart phone requires a hard keyboard, so I was enthusiastic that Motorola included one on this phone.  The keys themselves are decent sized, and sufficiently rounded to be able type by feel.  I did find my fingers bumping against the screen at the top of the keyboard, and hitting the wrong keys a lot.

I really didn’t care for this keyboard.  It has a whole row fewer keys that the G1 (no numbers on the Cliq), and the keys were much closer together.  I was constantly mistyping on this keyboard.  I can’t put my finger on exactly why (pun not intended), but I just couldn’t type accurately on this keyboard.  I also was constantly hunting for the “Alt” key so I could use punctuation and other special characters (some of which have dedicated keys on the G1).  This keyboard is better than nothing, but really not great, which is disappointing.  Bottom line, I found myself requiring many more key presses to input the same text as would be required on the G1.

The 5 way rocker on the left of the keyboard is useless.  I never used it, and found it a complete waste of space.  Maybe if it was on the screen I might use it to navigate, but in its current configuration, it didn’t have much utility.

Moto Blur

Motorola built a custom interface on top of Android (version 1.5), with a variety of social networking, and other utilities built in.  Overall, I was impressed with some of the value add in the beginning, but over time, most of them just became annoying.  Plus, most of the features could be enabled with Apps (or are included in the Android 2.0 release, which most people will get eventually anyway).

I would like to say that the overall experience on the phone is great.  The phone is actually very snappy, and seems to work well (it feels faster than my G1, which may be my imagination, since both phones share the exact same specs).  Motorola has done a good job of creating some nice eye-candy for the interface.  They have changed quite a few of the standard UI elements (like the status bar pull down, transitions between apps and screens,  in call screen, icons and images for battery charging, etc) to make them a little more flashy.  This is welcome, as the original Android interface, while being functional, is not particularly visually appealing.   I do think the Blur experience is significantly different than the standard Android one.

Blur is intended to aggregate various social services (including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc) and provide common interfaces to all of them.  They have built interfaces to these services right into the phone.  For instance, there is a “Happennings” app that aggregates status updates from all your various contacts into a single app (which you can then sort in a few ways).  They also place a widget directly on the desktop to display the most current update from Twitter.  Most importantly, they aggregate all your contacts from the various services directly into your main contact list.

It was extremely easy to set all this up.  I just gave my userids, and passwords for the various services, and Blur did the rest.  Luckily it didn’t really aggregate all the contacts (ie. actually insert my Facebook contacts into my Google contacts), but just provided a common view.  I had heard that the Palm Pre actually joined the various contact groups into one big one, which would be a huge mess (nobody wants all their Facebook contacts in their main phone book).

At first I liked the contact integration, but now I find it annoying.  Because there is so much information in the contacts application, I find it takes quite a few key presses to locate a person, and make a call.  Bottom line, having a phone that makes it difficult to make a call, is not a good thing.

Blur takes advantage of some of the additional sensors, which is great.  For instance using the proximity sensor, when you hold the phone up to your face, the touch screen goes dark (and inactive).  I didn’t find a way to automatically start Google Voice search when holding the phone to your face (like on the iPhone) – which would be another smart use of the proximity sensor.  I didn’t see any particularly important use of the light sensor, but maybe it was more subtle.

An important thing to note, is that Blur is written on top of Android 1.5.  This could have limitations when trying to run applications targeting 1.6 features (I have been running into a ton of problems with the ADP2 applications, which may be buggy applications, or limitations due to the version of Android- I honestly don’t know;  I also couldn’t install the new hack for Google Nav functionality which relied on 1.6 libraries – but in fairness, isn’t supported officially anyway).  Motorola has publicly stated that they don’t intend to update Blur to 1.6, but will be going directly to 2.0.  They currently have not announced when the 2.0 update will be available (although the phone itself will definitely be able to support an update).  I haven’t received an OTA update on the phone at all, which is surprising, since there are usually quite a few minor bug fixes pushed out in the first few weeks of a new release.

Blur Security Features

Blur includes some other nice features.  One of them is the ability to backup your phone, to an external server (and clone it, if you lose your phone, and want to duplicate your settings on your new phone).  I didn’t try this (but will at some point, and will update this site when I do).

Another is the ability to locate your phone remotely if it is lost or stolen (and wipe it remotely).  Again, these features are available through 3rd party apps on any Android phone, but they are certainly value add.  I tried this, and it did locate my phone reasonably well (it was using cell location, so I didn’t expect super good accuracy).  I didn’t try to wipe the phone remotely, but will try this at a convenient time, and update this post with my results.

Battery

It has been great on this phone.  I don’t always remember to turn the various sensors off (GPS, Wifi, etc), and this phone will give me a full day of heavy use.  That’s really all I need, as I plug it in every night.

Stability

The phone has not been reliable for me.  In fact, as I am typing this review (note: not doing anything on the phone, or even touching it) I noticed that it just rebooted itself (completely powered down, and came back to the original flash screen).  This phone has crashed on me 7 times in the past 3 weeks.  I am not sure if this is a problem with my particular phone, or symptomatic of these phones in general.  I have never had my G1 lockup, or crash in the previous 10 months that I have owned it.  I would guess that these sort of problems will be addressed with a software update, but as it stands now, this phone is not reliable.

Conclusion

If you are an early adopter, and thinking your G1 is looking a little long in the tooth, I would advise waiting for another phone to upgrade.  This phone is not a significant enough improvement to justify the upgrade.  I sincerely hoped this phone would be better, as I want to support Motorola (they are big time proponents of the Android platform, so their success will only be good for the platform in general).  As a first generation phone, it shows some great ideas, but falls a little short on implementation.

If you are a T-Mobile customer, and looking to get a new Android phone, this would be a great first device, it is snappy, has good hardware, and will allow you to get your feet wet with the  platform.

Hvordan fungerer det så?
Telefonen kender selvfølgelig din egen position vha. den indbyggede gps-enhed. Den sammenholder din position med alle optegnelser i en wiki. I www.wikitude.me er alle artikler geotagget, altså tilføjet en geografisk position. Når du holder din telefon op og drejer 360 rundt om dig selv, kan telefonen vha. af det indbyggede kompas se hvad vej du peger telef0nen. Udfra disse to oplysninger – din position og det verdenshjørne du nu vender imod - kan den let give dig afstanden til et POI/en wikiartikel i den retning du kigger lige nu. Dette punkt kan ligge på den anden side af gaden eller det kan være 117 km. væk.

I dette tænkte eksempel vil du, når du står på Torvet i Køge og kigger rundt, i princippet kunne få informationer om alle husene der omkranser Torvet. Det er selvfølgelig forudsat at der er nogle der har lagt informationerne ind i systemet. I skrivende stund ligger der to tyske tekster om Køge, samt een (min) om Køge Byhistoriske Arkiv.

Ulempen – for sådan een er der jo altid – er, at der kun kan være 255 tegn i brødteksten om hvert POI. Og så kommer man til at slås om opmærksomhed med andre POI i nærheden. Brugeren vil både kunne se mere om de historiske guldkorn og de lokale cafeer, benzinstationer osv. – hvis de har lagt informationer ind. Men lige nu er der som sagt ikke trængsel om POIs i Køge.
Nå ja, så er der jo heller ikke så mange Iphones derude endnu…

Men virker det nu også ordentligt?
Ja, det ved jeg da virkelig ikke, for jeg har ikke haft lejlighed til at teste det endnu. Jeg kunne bare ikke vente med at dele dette link med Jer :-) Alt i alt er det bestemt værd at bruge lidt tid på at fifle med dette nye legetøj. Så nu mangler du (jeg) kun en Iphone, men heldigvis er julen jo lige om hjørnet!

Her er en ny applikation som både fungerer på Google Android og nu senest også på Iphone. De applikationer der hidtil har set lovende ud, har oftest kun fungeret under Iphone. Her er en løsning til flere platforme.

Hvordan fungerer det så?
Telefonen kender selvfølgelig din egen position vha. den indbyggede gps-enhed. Den sammenholder din position med alle optegnelser i en wiki. I www.wikitude.me er alle artikler geotagget, altså tilføjet en geografisk position. Når du holder din telefon op og drejer 360 rundt om dig selv, kan telefonen vha. af det indbyggede kompas se hvad vej du peger telef0nen. Udfra disse to oplysninger – din position og det verdenshjørne du nu vender imod - kan den let give dig afstanden til et POI/en wikiartikel i den retning du kigger lige nu. Dette punkt kan ligge på den anden side af gaden eller det kan være 117 km. væk.

I dette tænkte eksempel vil du, når du står på Torvet i Køge og kigger rundt, i princippet kunne få informationer om alle husene der omkranser Torvet. Det er selvfølgelig forudsat at der er nogle der har lagt informationerne ind i systemet. I skrivende stund ligger der to tyske tekster om Køge, samt een (min) om Køge Byhistoriske Arkiv.

Ulempen – for sådan een er der jo altid – er, at der kun kan være 255 tegn i brødteksten om hvert POI. Og så kommer man til at slås om opmærksomhed med andre POI i nærheden. Brugeren vil både kunne se mere om de historiske guldkorn og de lokale cafeer, benzinstationer osv. – hvis de har lagt informationer ind. Men lige nu er der som sagt ikke trængsel om POIs i Køge.

Alt i alt er det bestemt værd at bruge lidt tid på at fifle med dette nye legetøj. Så nu mangler du (jeg) kun en Iphone, men heldigvis er julen jo lige om hjørnet!

The Android GUI

I can’t remember whether my fascination with graphical user interfaces (GUI) began with Pong or the Mac SE, but somewhere along my long journey down the digital highway, I became convinced that the concept of GUI was as critical to the evolution of technology as the concept of brand management has been to the evolution of marketing.

Until recently, this conviction has diminished my technical credibility. In the ’80s, when I worked at SAS, I argued that statisticians were not computer scientists (what we called software developers back then) and therefore required a more intuitive manner with which to interface with our software. In the ’90s, when I worked at SGI, I fought the GUI battle for technologies such as email and web browsers, making little headway against UNIX engineers who believed GUI was a costly, inefficient, and irrelevant overhead to perfectly understandable command-line interfaces. I remember thinking then that if SGI—a company built on the vision of computer graphics—didn’t understand the power of graphical interfaces, no company would. Still, when I started my own company, Pie Digital, I stuck to my GUI guns. As my partners and I schlepped Sand Hill Road, I found myself eyed mockingly any time I would tout the holistic UX (User Experience, inclusive of GUI) of the Pie System. It was as if I were talking about our HR practices (nothing against HR—I’ve spent much of my career in HR—but other than being able to recruit engineers quickly, you don’t bring up the strategic relevance of HR practices in a VC pitch). My co-founders eventually convinced me to quell my UX/UI evangelism so we could appear more serious.

Then came the iPhone. Suddenly business folk from all walks are comparing capacitive versus resistive touch screens, arguing over the importance of muti-touch and gesturing, and engaging in all sorts human factors buzz talk. Last week Pie was visited by a CEO from an industry not known for caring a rat’s aorta for UI. He talked to me of the importance for anthropological human-computer interaction (HCI). Stunned, I opened once more the closet door of my evangelism and replied that I believed UX/UI was a primary differentiator for consumer-focused technologies. He nodded in agreement. It was liberating.

As promised in the previous post, here’s a review of popular note taking apps for Android.

What’s the point of having a smart phone if you can’t jot down the priceless quote some one made, in the office meeting, for water cooler talk later, or perhaps a compilation of quotes for your blog.

With the number of choices available in the Android market, choosing the perfect note taking app for your Android phone has become a non trivial pursuit.

I have compiled a table of features for the popular notepad apps from the Android market, I have put the features that I thought would be useful.

I only tested the free apps, some of the following apps have paid versions which include more features.

Some applications have some other features worth mentioning that are not in the table. Here are some that I found note worthy

3Banana:

It has a good web interface. The web interface can , Barcode, Sign-in using Google account, Location tagging,

AK Notepad:

AK Notepad comes bundled as an uninstallable applications in some of the custom Android ROMs. It is a pretty decent option if all you want to do is take text notes.

ColorNote:

The main USP of this application is that the notes can be color coded and sorted based on the color. Other than that this is a simple app for taking text notes.

Evernote:

Evernote is perhaps the best known name in this list. They don’t have a release version out for Android yet, so I tested the beta version that can be downloaded from their site. Evernote  definitely has best online presence amongst the listed apps. Their desktop app is too good to ignore. If you are a Windows or a Mac user then this is definitely worth a very serious look. Me, I am waiting for them to release a Linux version.

Foxnote:

This application is supposed to sync with Google Docs but I was unable to get it to work.

GDocs:

GDocs integrates pretty well with Google docs. It allows the user to download their documents from Google Docs and edit them. The editing can be done offline. Documents can be created offline and  can later be synced. If you use Google Docs then you should definitely give this application a try.

Note Everything:

This is a feature rich note taking application. Most of the features for which it says “no” in the table are available in the Pro version which has Photo notes, checklists, encryption, reminder etc. I did not try the Pro version.

Note Me:

Note Me has a slightly busy looking interface with lots icons at the bottom of the screen. It has filtering by tags and a send to calendar feature which is similar to the remainder feature that some other apps have.

Notepad:

This is plain vanilla  note taking app, it provides syncing through its own servers at http://pad.helicoid.net

Paint Note:

This is not a normal note taking application. This is meant for taking picture notes. You can open any picture from your album or SD Card, add notes to it and share it using one of the many photo sharing sites. You can also create your own drawings and share them in the same way.

Ultra Notes:

This is another feature rich application. It is one of the few application that support encryption. The home screen, by default, contains a list of folders which can be used to categorise the notes.

Wiki notes:

This is useful for creating wikis, all wiki words (text with more than one capital letter) become links to notes of that title.

Status note:

This is another app which is not a simple note taking app. This puts an editable note in the status bar.

OI Notebook:

Open Intents (OI) have a pretty large suite of apps for Android platform. Their note taking app, OI Notebook, is a pretty decent application. The USP of OI Notebook is that it integrates well with other OI products like OI Voice Notes, OI Safe, providing additional functionality.

As many of you already know I also have an HTC Hero which many feel is the best, to date, Android equipped smartphone therefore it is natural to compare the Samsung to the Hero. Right up front I will say that I think the Hero is the better of the two devices as it is quicker, has more memory for running apps, has better in built software on it and has the advantage, for some, of the Sense UI plus a big choice of HTC widgets. It also feels more solid but that may be down to the fact it is weightier than the Samsung. On those fronts then, logically, you would pick the Hero any day of the week and most people would. I, however, have odd smartphone preferences and being a championer of the small guy, I kind of prefer the Samsung, admittedly for all the wrong reasons. The two phones do share a lot of stock Android apps though and of course various Google enhancements and therefore are only going to be seperated by the actual hardware and any customisations/layers added on by the manufacturer. One major potential drawback for the Galaxy is that it appears Samsung will not be providing an official upgrade path to Android v2, according to what I have read on the web anyway.

I think I prefer it for these reasons (although obviously it is early doors)…..I find the menu buttons on the front easier to use, the camera is miles better, the device is slimmer and lighter, it doesn’t have that odd Jimmy Hill style chin/lip and the screen is better. It’s not that I dislike the chin it’s more that I just prefer a phone without one. Also, it finds my home network first time and stays connected and doesn’t do that strange HTC thing of moving through the homescreens of its own accord. I know that the Samsung “lock” system has received much derision but again, I strangely prefer it to the HTC set up and it hasn’t bothered me the way it has some other bloggers.  I’m still using the Galaxy though without a back cover so useage has been limited to at home only but I have played with it a fair bit over the past few days, have installed all the apps that I have purchased and have given it a decent work out.

Later this week will be a mini-review of sorts in 2 parts, the first comparing hardware on the Galaxy and Hero and then software…of which the Hero, out of the box, appears to have a major advantage.

This is still in beta and is available to download for free at the moment, it told me I can use if for 36 days which is a bit of an odd number but it gives you plenty time to play around with it and see whether it does the job. You need to follow the specific instructions on the download page though. I had to rename the SD card to “Androidcard” as per their suggestion to get it to work, it didn’t seem to want to know about syncing playlists/video/photos to the Samsung Galaxy internal storage however, which I wanted, and only wanted to know about the SD card.

It’s a bit basic at the moment but further syncing features will be added later apparantly, including their wifi “proximity” sync for contacts and calendars but if all you need is to sync music, pics and videos then it is worth trying out. I must say it was pretty quick transferring the stuff I wanted synced.

들어가기 전에

1. 전 안드로이드 전문가가 아닙니다. 안드로이드라는 단어 듣고 들여다 보기 시작한 지 이제 겨우 갓 한 달 갓 넘은 초보입니다. 너무 어려운 질문 하기 없기.
2. 전 기술적인 백그라운드가 전혀 없습니다.  기술적으로 잘못 적은 것 있으면 알려주세요.

지금 세상에 나와 있는 모든 스마트폰 중에서 가장 잘 만든 것은 아이폰입니다. 그것은 부인할 수 없는 사실입니다. 모토롤라의 드로이드가 잘 만들었다고 하나 아직은 아이폰에게 약간 밀리고 있다고 외신들은 전하고 있습니다.

개인적으로 ‘무조건’ 아이폰보다 안드로이드가 잘될 것이라 예상하지만, 지금 여기 적는 것은 ‘안드로이드가 왜 잘될까?’가 아니고 ‘왜 안드로이드가 잘 되었으면 좋겠는가?’에 대한 글입니다.

저는 다른 OS, 다른 제품들은 안중에 없습니다. Symbian, Windows Mobile, Bada, Limo, WebOS 전부 안될 것으로 생각합니다. 딱 하나 싸울 상대는 iPhone 밖에 없다고 생각합니다. 아이폰만 제끼면 만사형통, 무사태평일 것으로 봅니다. ^^

그럼 아이폰을 왜 지지하지 않느냐.

App 말고 (기술적으로) 더 할 수 있는 것이 있나?

아이폰이 시장을 지배하면 한국의 모바일 개발자들이 너무 가여울 것 같습니다. 할 수 있는 것이 그야말로 ‘App Store’에 내놓을 Application 만드는 것 말고 할 수 있는 것이 뭐가 있나요?
OS를 건드릴 수가 있습니까, UI를 건드릴 수가 있습니까, 아이폰 위에 얹을 수 있는 플랫폼을 만들 수 있습니까..

App말고 만들 수 있는 것은 주변기기와 App과 연동한 서비스 정도일진대, 둘다 개발자의 몫은 아닌 것 같고..

안드로이드로는 뭘 할 수 있냐고요? 다 할 수 있습니다. 맨 아래의 OS부터 해서 맨 상단의 App까지 모두 건드릴 수 있습니다.

할 수 있는 일이 줄어들지 않을까?

기업 전용 앱 만드는 것도 쉽지 않은 일입니다.
알려지지 않은 이야기지만 국내 굴지의 한 생명보험회사에서 보험설계사 업무용으로 아이폰을 일괄구입해서 지원하는 걸 검토했다가 사업 검토 후 철회한 적이 있죠.  기업의 업무시스템과 연동하기에 쉽지 않다라는 판단에서 그런 결정을 내린 것으로 압니다.

군사용 폰을 독자개발할 수도 있을 것이고, 여성분들을 위한 폰들을 독자개발 할 수도 있을 것입니다.

국수주의자라 할 지 모르겠으나

App Store에 올리면 30%를 애플이 가져갑니다. 안드로이드 마켓은 30%를 이통사가, 70%를 개발자가 가져갑니다. 전 외국으로 나가는 30% 아깝습니다. -.,-;;

우리나라에는 삼성, LG가 있습니다. 팬텍도 있고, SK텔레시스도 있습니다. 저는 이 회사 다들 잘 됐으면 좋겠습니다.
제가 지금 블랙베리에 아이폰만 들고 다니는 이유는 그들이 내가 원하는 멋진 스마트폰을 내놓지 못해서이지 그들이 미워서는 아닙니다. 국내휴대폰 제조사가 애플보다 좋은 제품을 내놓았으면 좋겠고 전 현재 안드로이드만이 대안이라 보고 있습니다. 더 좋은 제품 내놓으면 무조건 삽니다.

일단 이 정도입니다. 또 다른 이유들도 있을까요?

전 아이폰을 처음 본 순간 푹 빠졌었습니다. 지금도 어디 갈 때마다 항상 들고 다니지요. 명품이죠. 많은 사람들이 아이폰에 빠지는 이유에 대해서 잘 알고 있습니다. 저는 애플의 제품은 좋아하지만 그들의 철학은 좋아하지 않습니다. 처음부터 끝까지, HW부터 OS까지 자신들이 전부 통제해야 하며, 앱스토어에 등록되는 모든 SW들은 자신들이 등록해 줘야 등록이 가능하다는 그들의 일방적인 태도는 그리 마음에 들지 않습니다.

전 안드로이드를 지지합니다. 오픈소스 기반으로 무료로 배포되는, Open Handset Alliance의 협력으로 만들어 가고 있는 안드로이드를 지지합니다.

If the seller is to be believed, however, this particular Droid is one of only five produced, and is different from the standard issue Droid in a few respects — including a chrome bezel instead of a black one, silver buttons instead of gold, and some “enhanced LED lighting” on the front buttons. Build tip secret:

1. Install Sdk components the android 2.0 way, ie andorid sdk 1.5, 1.6, and 2.0 in same install folder.

2. use build.template as your build template.

3. Copy android_rules.template main node from  Android 2.0/templates into your build file and set setup import to false.

4. Set build.porperies extra values the Android 2.0 way such as tested.absolute.dir, etc.

5. Copy android_tested_rules.template from android 2.0/templates to your build file.

6. define new ant test targets using the comand-line args at:

This should not only give you EMMA coverage support across sdk 1.5, 1.6, and 2.0 but allow you to also test run unit tests with the new tests as separate project set up. Thank the Google engineers on the SDK tools team.

當大家都把注意力在Apple iphone 同Android的時候,Nokia都了解自己也不可坐以待斃,在未來日子.親生仔S60會慢慢告老還鄉由新系統Maemo 5慢慢取替.無可否認,Nokia這一次可說是破斧沉舟誓保手機一哥地位. 2009年可以講係手機行業最艱辛的一年.因為遇上了世界金融風暴.同時Nokia在智能手機業務一直都被Window Mobile打擊, 同時iphone的威脅也令Nokia在市場上的發展可謂難上加難. S60系統的退步也加速拉下了Nokia在市場上一哥地位.

普遍用家都認為S(Symbian)系統已是過時及不合智能手機平台.Nokia要轉變系統以配合未來手機發展才可改變命運.所以亦發報新手機N900及新系統Maemo5,一個以Linux-based為開發基礎的系統,開發及運算都比S系統都更好.同時亦有消息傳出Nokia有可能收購Palm並希望得到web os的技術.不過暫時仍未有定案,只知道未來兩年Nokia要重整旗鼓得更艱難.

先不說Android及iphone.要兩年後才慢慢轉system後才有更強的手機機能.不免慢了一點吧. 在產品設計行業要取得成功.改變當然是一個關鍵,但時機都是很重要,懂得與時並進貼近用戶永遠都會取得成功.
