11/10/09

Fran & Andy (of Travis) @ Joes Pub

a. Fran Healy & Andy Dunlop rock!

2. Travis music is really really awesome! I sometimes forget how much I really like their music. I’ll dismiss it for a little while but whenever i come back it fits like an old glove and makes me happy.

C. 12 Memories of Urban Bohemia might be the best album title ever (thanks Dandy Warhols – 13 Tales from Urban Bohemia is my favorite album ever, sorry Travis).

4. Andy is awesome! When I met him he immediately said “We’ve met before”. And he was convinced we had met, Im pretty sure we hadnt. Like he said, maybe in a past life and then he said something about a snail. Must be a Scottish thing – Im still perplexed.

d. Fran is really charming. Did I just say charming – I need to add REALLY CHARMING. He gave me a big hug upon leaving and then a huge kiss on the cheek. I think I floated out the door.

E. Fran telling me about the drunken assholes in the very front. It was just random conversation which led to him telling me how obnoxious they were. I had already wanted to throw my beer at them, but Im sad to hear they fucked up his set by singing so loudly and just being pure obnoxious.

2 dudes (if you ever read this) its fucking Fran and Andy’s show, not yours. Youre at Joe’s Pub not some huge club where he cant hear you. He can hear every single f’ing thing now be polite or get the hell out!
(sorry for my rant)

7. Me telling Fran I drank his glass of wine. yes its true- he had a glass of wine on the stage for him. And he left without ever taking a sip. Upon asking their roadie/tech guy for his setlist he also asked if I’d like Fran’s wine. Of course I said yes. And the wine was delicious; and more importantly Fran told me he was glad I drank it.

X. Fran warning Sally and I he might spit into our food. Our table was so close (thats an understatement) to him it was a bit unreal. Maybe he should have spit into my cake, it was way too dry and could have used something to make it more moist

9. Andy disappearing between songs and Fran panicking about what happened to him. This is just so not the stuff that happens at shows. Andy was in the loo and yes he was ok

Y. Sally (my new friend thanks to Craigslist) is awesome. Aside for buying my dinner as a thank you and for scoring the best table ever, is also super cool. She showed me her picture of her and Ovie and I nearly died. Wait! A hockey fan and Travis fan. For real. She was also at the Manics – Sally scored major bonus points!

Z. Walking home at 2am in Hells Kitchen was surreal The streets were beyond empty and it was eerie and I started wondering if I was in a Zombie movie. I was picturing something like 28 Days later and picturing how they were all going to appear and they werent slow zombies they were fast. Needless to say I was f-ed and got the hell home fast

and finally #12. The best memory ever was that this was easily my favorite show of this year and probably would rank easily in my top 10.

The slideshow, the pictures, the maps and the picture of his adorable boy really made them human. They were real people at that moment and not these huge rockstars. And it told the story of the music of Travis and how so much of it came about. And I just love the stories of him going to the cinema as a kid with his granddad and seeing Bad Lieutenant. Some things Ill just never forget.

And Im so making a sign next time they come here saying ‘S(w)ing’. It’d be awesome. And a few people would totally understand where it came from.

There are three more dates (woo finally I am not at the last show of a tour), left at Joe’s Pub for Fran Healy & Andy Dunlop’s US tour. Last night Fran told the stories behind the birth of Travis’ songs over the past twenty years including “Driftwood.” He had been proscrastinating, watching ‘Cheers’ and Norm overheard his boss say there would be layoffs – and getting rid of all the extra ‘driftwood.’

It’s so wonderful when an artist you love simply says thank you. Fran & Andy were signing a bootleg they made of the tour. They wanted to meet anyone who wanted to meet them! What?! I love when rock stars are that cool and mellow.

A hugely adorable highlight was Fran’s 4 year old son, Clay, was there for his first concert. Clay shouted out a request for his dad to play his current favorite song ‘Billie Jean.’ His dad was artfully negotiating more time when Clay requested several times between songs ‘Papa stop singing! I want to go home!’ because the poor bubba was tired. It made them singing ‘My Eyes’ , my personal favorite Travis song, even more special.

Andy chewed gum, offered up several smiles and played both the guitar and piano, sipping red wine between songs. Fran was gave us much to laugh about and explained the “invisible man” is the A & R guy who happily encourages heart break = cha-ching for the label.

Frannie also mentioned although the invisible men say free music devalues music, he thinks $10 for an album devalues music because music is above pricing. I thought that was a very lovely stance to take and I agree with him. Music brings you back to a moment in time, to people gone or big events like marriage, birth, death, etc. It fuels the soul and it should be available to everyone. It can transform a moment or ruin one, make us laugh and dance and most of all sing….sing, sing sing.

October 12, 2009
Largo, LA

A dependable old lover

Oh Largo, you’re like a dependable old lover. Even when I try to walk away from you altogether, you lure me back in with the pull of good music and the allure of your distanced “I’m going to serve you from behind the safety of this gate” stance. Although I successfully resisted your temptation since Butch Walker played there December 4, 2008, you sucked me in once again.

And it was even better than I remembered.

“Trust a little in Largo” was the door guy/ticket guy/MC’s response to a question I asked about seating. I’m sure he has a name and I’d like to know it because he’s one of the reasons Largo exceeded my expectations tonight. The other reason is, of course, Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop (Travis).

Andy Dunlop & Fran Healy

Healy explained that the concept of this tour was to play songs chronologically from the first song he wrote to the most recent song he’s written. The idea is that they’ll write a new song every couple of days, and perform the new song as the last song of the set in the next city they play. “At the end of the tour, we hope to have written an entire new Travis album,” Healy remarked.

Whereas the model has been: make a record and then go on tour to support it, Healy and Dunlop flipped the model to: go on tour to support the making of the record.

Already, I loved them.

Then they played the songs, each preceded by Healy’s entertaining commentary. Healy introduced “20″ as a song he wrote when he was 19, realizing the best years of his life may be coming to an end with his twentieth birthday. “People make a big deal out of turning 21,” Healy said. “But really, it’s 20 that’s the big deal because that’s when 17, 18, 19 come to an end. And those are the best years because you’re doin’ everything for the first time.” Healy also noted that this is the first song he wrote that he felt was a good song; a sign that he could make a career out of this.

If there’s one thing I like better than ice cream, it’s a funny musician. Healy introduced “All I Want To Do Is Rock” by showing a slide show about Scotland. He gave a humorous geography lesson and then ended the slide show with a picture of his view from the window in the building where he wrote the song. There was a longer story about “Turn” which boiled down to being “a song about wishes. A song full of wishes.”

“It’s an A&R man’s dream when a lead singer gets chucked,” Healy reflected. “Now he’ll write some proper songs,” said Healy, mocking the overjoyed A&R guy. This insight set the stage for Healy and Dunlop’s performance of “A Funny Thing.”

“Flowers In The Window” was written in a house where Travis once stayed. The host introduced the band to the home saying, “Everybody writes a song here.” Rebelliously, Healy thought to himself, “well, I’m not writing a song here.” But that all changed after he received inspiration while looking at flowers in the yard, through a window (and his obstructed view the morning after).

It seemed as if the guys were playing all my favorite Travis songs. In addition to the songs previously mentioned, they played “Good Feeling” and “As You Are”; “Writing To Reach You” and “Sing.” Tonight was the 4th night in a row they played Largo and Healy said they’ve changed the set every night. Although the songs themselves may change, one thing is consistent night to night – Healy and Dunlop remain true to the original concept, playing the songs chronologically during each performance.

Healy spoke about the inspiration for “Why Does It Always Rain On Me” which was written during a trip to Israel. Somebody told him it would be sunny there (his one prerequisite for the vacation) so he journeyed to Israel. The moment Healy arrived it began raining, and this song was written.

Healy also spoke about the lyric: “I’m being held up by an invisible man.” “The invisible man is the A&R guy or manager who’s holding you up (supportively) so you can finish the record. Of course, there’s a double entendre — they’re ‘holding you up’ (Healy positions his hands as if they’re guns) for the record as well.” Healy looked at the audience and continued, “I’ve never explained that to anyone before.” Then he looked at Dunlop, “I don’t think I even told you that. . .” Dunlop nodded in agreement.

Another lyric Healy discussed is: “pillars turn to butter” from the song, “Driftwood.” He was looking to complete the lyric with the idea of one thing evolving into another, to follow the “Nobody”/”Everyone” dichotomy of the previous line. “Caterpillars turn to butterflies” was the original line, but it was too long to fit the form of the song so Healy abbreviated it to “pillars turn to butter.” “But that changes the meaning again. It’s another good visual – these strong pillars turning to butter,” Healy elaborated.

I spoke with the guys for a bit after the show. Dunlop described how much fun these shows are and how they differ from a typical Travis tour. “We don’t want to get comfortable during these shows. When we’re on tour with Travis, we want to get comfortable because we’re going to be playing these songs over and over again, each night with the band. But here – we don’t want to get comfortable. There are some songs we may play every night, but we make the experience different. Especially since we’re playing four shows in a row at the same venue – we don’t usually do that. We’re aware that some people might come to more than one show and we don’t want them to think, ‘Oh. . . here we go with this again. . .” Dunlop elaborated.

We also discussed the current state of the music business. Healy and Dunlop are now off the major label and releasing music independently. Dunlop reflected, “Music is getting back to what it used to be – small record shops, independent labels, the musician and the fan, spending time with our audience, more intimate shows and settings.”

I asked how they conceived of the idea to go on tour as the central creative process for writing another record. Again, it was to do something different – to keep the tours and the music feeling fresh. Dunlop shared his outlook, “You know, we may get nothing out of it. Or we may get a lot out of it. If nothing else, we get to travel all around and see some beautiful places.”

Then I shared a perspective, telling Dunlop, “We’d like it if you’d release a double-CD; one CD with all the commentary and another with the acoustic song performances.” Dunlop mentioned that they’ve recorded everything from each show so far and that they may release it following the tour.

As of now, if you’re lucky enough to attend one of these shows, you can purchase a CD comprised of 80 minutes of live audio recorded during this tour.

Dzisiaj na czynniki pierwsze, rozłożę: Travis – The Man Who.

„The Fear”- przygnębiająca próba rozprawienia się z odbiorcą. Nawiązując do tytułu to strasznie szybko wpada w ucho. Dla mnie mistrzowski jest moment; „But here, Closer every year, So near”, mogę tego słuchać z tysiąc razy i dalej będzie mnie to zachwycać. Może kiedyś osiągnę jakiś stan nirwany.

„As you are” – można narzekać, że Franek znowu przymula – nic bardziej mylnego on tu jeszcze pokaże pazur.

“The Last Laugh Of The Laughter” – nie sugerujcie się tytułem, tutaj nie znajdziecie ani krzty humoru.

Najpierw członkowie zespołu nawijają o dupie marynie, a potem wokalista robi pompki. Pewnie dostał jakiś omnadren w poślady przed kręceniem teledysku, bo nieźle mu to idzie. Istny Fighting Force.

“Why Does It Always Rain On Me?”

“She’s So Strange” – każde wejście wokalu Francisa to majstersztyk.

“Slide Show” – najlepszy akustyczny kawałek Travisa. W tle wiolonczela, a potem prościutka solówka. „But there is a slideshow and it’s so slow, flashing through my mind”, strasznie ściska w klacie.

Zdecydowanie najbardziej spójna i ciekawa płyta szkockiej grupy. Szkoda, że to nie tutaj były „All I Want To Do Is Rock” i „U16 Girls”, wtedy wszystko współgrałoby maksymalnie.
Polecam.

It’s the summer of 1999. The flame of Britpop which flared so brightly and arrogantly has long been

It’s the summer of 1999. The flame of Britpop which flared so brightly and arrogantly has long been extinguished; leaving the majority of its former leaders burnt out and charred. Rising out of the ashes, Travis take to the stage at the Glastonbury Festival and play Why Does it Always Rain on Me from their album The Man Who. The heavens duly open along with the floodgates of fame and success. The deluge of plaudits and accolades which follows sweeps them along on a wave of popularity, leading to them being crowned the Biggest Band in Britain™. Then, with the stadiums of the world at their mercy, Travis come crashing down.

“It’s really hard not to implode and unravel when fame like that hits you because you’re really stretched very thinly,” says guitarist Andy Dunlop. “We were trying to play these massive UK gigs while attempting to break the US and keep the momentum going in Europe all at the same time. It kind of all caught up with us. After all the hype and the hysteria, we just had to put the brakes on and disappear for a while. When we came back, we had to want it. Luckily, we did.”

When the Scottish four-piece resurfaced, the musical landscape was very different. Melodic, melancholic stadium rock was now de rigueur and bands like Coldplay and Starsailor had taken up the baton. Travis responded with The Invisible Band, an album reflecting the group’s belief that the music should always be more important than the image.

“With The Invisible Band, it was all about the reaction to that mad fame,” Dunlop says. “We wanted the music to be out there and for it to be less about this image of being a big band. That whole crazy period taught us that fame is cheap and it’s not worth chasing. So that album was all about our reaction to hollow fame.”

Perversely, the album brought more adulation and lead to the more organic, moody and political sounds of 12 Memories, an album which exposed Travis to what could be described as their first media backlash.

“After 12 Memories, which was an extremely cathartic album, we were a bit bruised by the negative response to that,” Dunlop admits. “We’d put ourselves out there and got shot down to a certain extent. But with the follow-up, The Boy with No Name, we started to rebuild and stretch ourselves. We tried a lot of different things to try and find out who we were at that point. We rediscovered our self confidence through that whole experience.”

The band’s rediscovered confidence is evident throughout their new album, Ode to J. Smith. The first not to be based on personal experiences, Ode to J. Smith features a series of characters which appear throughout the last day of protagonist J. Smith’s life. It’s typical Travis in many ways, with delicate harmonies and hooks, but there is an unsettling, brooding darkness throughout. The combination has led to many critics calling it the band’s best album ever.

“The new album’s written from a totally different perspective and angle from the others,” Dunlop explains. “It’s the first not to have that autobiographical theme to it. It’s more novelistic and thematic with its cast of characters and its journey.

“We really enjoyed making this record and I for one love listening to it,” he adds. “As a whole piece of work, it’s our most complete record since The Man Who and I’m really proud of how it works. It’s a collection of songs which tells the story of the central character, J. Smith’s last day of life. He dies, goes to heaven and is then turned away, ending up in hell. It poses a lot of questions, like why he didn’t get into heaven and why hell turns out to be enough for him. Ultimately, it’s about redemption.”

But then Travis has supposedly covered pop songs before, including Britney’s “One More Time,” and given them a humorous spin.

At a gig in Oslo, Travis made the Katy Perry song “I Kissed A Girl” more of a gay anthem. A fan at the show told the Daily Record that:

“Fran (Francis Healy, singer) and Andy Andy Dunlop, guitarist) did a brilliantly funny cover of the Katy Perry song. Fran said that he thought the song was actually about a man uncertain about his sexuality.”

Thankyou one and all for your concern and good wishes, all is fine, it’s just a bad sprain and after a couple of days of going easy on it, I should be fighting fit again. Might be a bit static for the next few shows, but rest assured I’m jumping up and down inside.
Lotsa love,
Andy x

ABER DANN… geschah was schräges…

und was sagt er: “hey wow cool you guy look exactly like my brother! that is so cool!!!”
