Andy and Jean-Michel I like to think that once upon a time at Indochine people like Warhol or Basqui

Andy and Jean-Michel

I like to think that once upon a time at Indochine people like Warhol or Basquiat were sitting in these very same booths, beneath the banana leaf murals and eat the very same delicious entries. (Althought I don’t know if they were really into eating).

It used to be a place for artists, my friend Glenn told me.

Carine, André, and Anna

Then the artists were joined by the Fashion people, but as he pointed out, nowadays, Art and Fashion are more or less the same.

And it’s true that people who think of one at the exclusion of the other are usually not very funny, or much artistic. This works both ways.

Friday night was Indochine 25th anniversary party and I skipped a philosophy lecture to arrive early.

The charming Nadine, orchestrating the guests.

Some people in amazing costumes were already waiting anxiously outside the tent, and then once inside we queued in front of the stairs into the restaurant where most of the action seemed to happen. At irregular intervals the charming Nadine would appeared from behind the curtains, and with the magnaninous power of a blond goddess saved a few human beings by letting them in.

The tenebrous Lady Fag

Once saved, I elbowed my way to the center of the booming crowded room. But most of the guests were too gorgeous –or too tall, as is the case with some of the superstar drag queens – to be pushed on the side, and I finally had to retreat in the basement bar and dance floor, which some insiders refers to as Under-chine and had not seen open for decades.

Todd’s straw hat state of destruction is far more sophisticated than one would thought.

Casey, one of the best dressed men of the night, was wearing a thrift store $10 suit

The elegant and cool Jean-Marc, hero of the party.

The amazing Sophie-Anne, from Paris.

With a moustache, Hamish revealed an entirely different personality.

Gabi and Adi wearing their own extraordinary designs

I’m not so much of a dance person. I would rather read a book, or talk to someone, so I went up to the go-go dancer poles and asked one of the prettiest go-go girls if it would bother her if we had a little chat while she was working. I had to shout over what I recognized as an old B52s tune, without the certainty to be heard. She shooked her head, but it was not clear what the answer was.

From Art, or Fashion, I insisted, what do you think is… It seemed she meant go-go dancing is an Art form, like everything else.

For those who missed the party, a commemorative book has just been published by Rizzoli : Indochine, Stories, Shaken and Stirred. The limited edition available at Indochine even comes with a free set of labelled paper napkins and two pairs of chopsticks.

Andy Warhol is dead, but he still iritates me. A lot of people love him, and he has some original and thought provoking art, but at the same time his still highly overrated.

Why do I feel this way? A couple of of years ago Toronto had an exhibit of his work and I had the ‘pleasure’ of seeing it. However, these works contained highly disturbing images. Art is a viewer beware industry and I am not a prude, but silk screens of John Kennedy’s assasination strike me as somewhat inappropriate. As do pieces containing images of a woman who had committed suicide and teens laying dead on the road from a car crash.

In North America the ability to express yourself freely is a wonderful thing and I believe people should be able to create whatever they wish. I do not however, feel that these works by Warhold are worthy of the attention they garner.

Warhol was indeed an interesting person and definitely created an interesting genre in pop art. But exploiting death and hailing it as great art will never be right in my books. He is just a man who managed to create an abstract image for himself. At the end of the day he was an excellent sales man and I’m not sold… yet.

I just read this hilarious report about a couple of crooked art dealers trying to pawn off some fake

I just read this hilarious report about a couple of crooked art dealers trying to pawn off some fake Warhol’s last Wednesday in Utah. The allegedly original and signed Warhol prints were of Mathew Baldwin, one of the brothers of Alec, Stephen, William and Daniel Baldwin (the famous actors). Only problem is, there is no Mathew Baldwin. Not to mention that they were signed and dated 1996. Andy Warhol died in 1987.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

“Andy Warhol didn’t create pictures of Alec Baldwin’s nonexistent brother. And he sure wouldn’t have done it when he was dead. But two Utahns, a 65-year-old Cottonwood Heights man and a 29-year-old woman from Saratoga Springs, were charged Wednesday with trying to sell similar pieces of fake art to a collector by passing them off as real.

According to charging documents, the couple agreed to sell another man six Andy Warhol art pieces for $100,000 in February 2008. The man was told that the subject of the art was Mathew Baldwin, purportedly one of the brothers in the family of actors. The pieces were signed and dated 1996.

After giving the couple a down payment of $25,000, the man took the art to an appraiser in California. The appraiser informed the man the art was fake because there was no Mathew in the famous Baldwin family. He also pointed out that the signatures were forged because Warhol died in 1987, charging documents state.

A gente chegou lá, sentou e conversou. Tipo ir pro boteco e jogar conversa fora.

In this Special Collector’s Issue (!) I spend 3x the space speaking on only 1 person, place, thing, or idea, and the noun chosen can pretty much claim to be a person, for certain, a place, a disposition in life, a thing, too cool for school, and an idea, as in being the original rock star. Forget your whiny, flannel dressed Kurt Cobain, and don’t forget The King, Elvis Presley, but put him to the side for now- my most passionate pop culture crush and obsession of all time is lovely, gorgeous, and an icon…

Edith Minturn Sedgwick

The history: Born April 20th, 1943 (- November 16, 1971), to Alice Delano de Forest (1908–1988), a cowardly woman that would rather pretend unicorns exist and that her husband wasn’t a disgusting sexual deviant and abomination of life than do anything about it, and Francis Minturn Sedgwick, (1904–1967), a disgusting sexual deviant and abomination of life, in Santa Barbara, California. Edie grew up to die to early, only then to make herself known to me and thus tormenting me with the fact I’ll never be nearly as cool as she was, that I’ll never get to make her my wife (I know I’m devastatingly lame, leave me alone). Grand daughter of Revolutionaries, and personal friends of George Washington, she was born into privilege (if that’s the word) from the years of wealth connected to the Dutch West India Company, South Pacific Transportation Company (then the Southern Pacific Railroad), Williams College, and tons of other things. The problems in her life stemmed from the same place most problems in life do, and that is family. Francis, or Fuzzy as he was known, is said to have molested many of his 8 children, males and females, young Edie included. Fuzzy, long believed by many to be a closet homosexual, may possible have been the cause of the homosexuality in Edie’s older brother Francis, affectionately known as Minty, who was even an alcoholic by the age of 15. He attended AA meetings until admission to Silver Hill, then later to Bellevue after being seen in Central Park, standing on a statue and giving a speech to an audience of zero. From there to Manhattan Psychiatric Center, then back to Silver Hill, where was found dead, hanging himself in his room the day before his twenty-sixth birthday. To make the tragedy worse, brother Bobby, who had been to numerous hospitals himself, including some Minty had been treated at, crashed his motorcycle while not wearing a helmet into the side of a bus in NYC on the last day of 1964. 13 days later he died, and Edie was emotionally obliterated at the loss of two brothers. Minty had once told Edie, according to a friend of hers, that “she was the only Sedgwick he could ever hope for.” It wasn’t long until Edie was being institutionalized for anorexia, reaching 90lbs in Silver Hill before being transferred to Bloomingdale Lunatic Asylum. Near the end of her stay, on leave with a pass, she got pregnant and was forced to have an abortion.

That’s some heavy junk, huh? Now, I don’t want to focus simply on the travesties she endured and lived through, which only get worse and include crippling drug addiction and dependence (drugs are what ultimately killed her), broken hearts via asshats Bob Dylan and Bob Neuwirth, a cold, uncaring, and devious “friend” and collaborator Andy Warhol who refused to help her ever, or even be fair in monetary matters. Further hospitalizations, electroshock therapy, and anything else in the world you could imagine was endured by her with biting realism. This tiny, madly artistic little girl was made of steel and stone, and to have glimmered so brightly in her life, in spite of her life, is a true testament that the kinda strength men pray to their gods at night for isn’t only real, but is unutterably beautiful. Vogue magazine thought her the bee’s knees (aside from her identification as a drug user) and featured her a few times. LIFE magazine did, too. Assuming you’ve been clicking the links in this article, you should be well aware of what a presence she was. Now, I don’t know about you, but I have to take my hat off to champions who live life by their own rules and personify our best traits and our best ambitions. To clarify, I’m not saying hard drug use is good, cool, or healthy, but to focus on that aspect of her life is putting too much gravity in the surrounding details.

Her voice and the way her body moved put in me a sense of awe. I can understand the difficulties one might have in seeing the grace in a party-heavy socialite, but what she had is old school, and probably extinct now. I know this because I’ve experienced it first hand in a grandmother of mine, now deceased. She had a high society sophistication in the shell of a cool, down ass chick that could play in the mud or drop jaws in a dress. Well, she was old when I was born so not that I ever saw, but I could tell this about her. It’s an aura that comes from a person, and even in photographs I feel a kinetic energy from Edie Sedgwick. To be honest, it’s very difficult for me to put my feelings for her into cogent words, but I, simply said, feel a camaraderie with her. And she was so sexy! It’s insane how attracted to Edie I am. I ♥ her. I know she was married and all when she passed away, but I totally got dibs on her in the afterlife.

PS: I will, of course, further discuss Edie, the history of her life, her modeling work, films, and how gorgeous she was in future posts. It’s called a compulsion, and you have front row tickets. You’re a lucky duck!

Although Andy Warhol was born already in Pittsburgh, Pensylvania, his parents were Ruthenian immigrants from this small village in today’s Slovakia. Andy Warhol’s two younger brothers – John and Paul – were born in Slovakia.

To remember Andy Warhol’s Slovak origins, The Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art was opened in the Slovak town of Medzilaborce on September 1, 1991 primarily on the initiative of Andy Warhol’s brother John. It was the first Andy Warhol’s museum in the world and at that time (and it might be still true today) it was the only museum of its kind in Europe.

Warhol is notorious for his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. This compromised of his superstars, speed and g

Warhol is notorious for his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. This compromised of his superstars, speed and general debauchery. But this exhibit at The National Gallery of Scotland shows a deeper side to Warhol, one that is concerned with death, religion and politics.

As a commercial illustrator in the 1950’s and 60’s, Warhol’s work embraced the American consumer culture. This was epitomised by his infamous piece of artwork; the repeated Campbell Soup image. Yet Warhol was not purely concerned with brands. His Death and Disaster series displays Warhol dabbling with death for the first time in his career. Critics may argue that Warhol portrayed sensational deaths, such as suicide and car crashes, with a heartless cool. While fans believe that Warhol is merely reflecting the modern world without judgement, observing how the media’s exposure of horrific events is making society immune to death and violence.

Warhol’s “Pop” portraits are also drenched in death. Iconic images of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley were produced following the idols’ untimely deaths. Warhol’s obsession with celebrities who were touched with death is embodied in his expression: “In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes”, reiterating that fame is short lived. Press images of widow, Jackie Kennedy following the murder of JFK, also produced a documentary of emotions; grief, happiness and dignity that surround the concurrent theme; death.

Warhol’s Screen Tests, which were mostly filmed during the 60’s, present an alternative art form to Warhol’s ritual silkscreen prints. Warhol filmed his “superstars” at The Factory and slowed the footage down by a third to create a 4 minute film in which every eye movement, every flutter of the eyelashes appears to be a revelation. His Screen Tests are mesmerising and are the key to the actor’s soul. Edie Sedgwick, socialite and “it” girl of the 1960’s, played a major role in Warhol’s films and was the quintessence of The Factory charisma.

In the 1980’s Warhol became obsessed with the Cold War tension, producing his famous Camouflage prints which undermined Russia’s military threats with the contradictory use of bright colours which simulates the American brand culture.

The most interactive and frivolous aspect of the exhibit is the un-missable Silver Clouds. A room full of helium and air inflated silver balloons which float in the direction which you push them. This is an opportunity to experience Andy Warhol’s avant-garde art, where everyone ranging from children to pensioners is playing like they have never played before.

However, Warhol’s self portraits are unequalled in this exhibit. Warhol hits the very core of his insecurities and fears, particularly in Self Portrait (Strangulation) which portrays him being strangled from behind in a shocked Christ-like position-eyes directed heaven ward.

This exhibition gives a deep insight into the chaotic and nihilistic life of Andy Warhol: where superficiality and enlightenment are one.
