MC300-MS16 York-Sunbury Historical Society Collection Description (page 134)

If you are interested in any of these files then please contact the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick.

“John Wolhaupter was born in 1771 in New York, and became a watchmaker, clockmaker and silversmith. He married Mary Payne Aycrigg in 1795. Because of their loyalist sympathies, their property was confiscated during the revolution and they came to New Brunswick sometime between 1795 and 1799. Wolhaupter set up a jewellery and clock making shop in St. John and became known as a silversmith. The family moved to Fredericton circa 1811, opened another shop, and 1825 the business was transferred to the oldest son, Benjamin, who was born in 1800.

Benjamin Wolhaupter married Catherine Brannen in 1820. He built a house at 79 Church Street, which was later sold to Bishop Medley and became known as Bishopscote. Wolhaupter served as Magistrate of York County; he was involved in the militia; and served as a Director of the Commercial Bank of New Brunswick. In 1847, he became Sheriff of York County and held that position until his death in 1857. Benjamin and Catherine Wolhaupter left three sons: James, Charles, and George.

James Matther Wolhaupter was born in 1823, became a physician; practiced in Portland, Maine, and died in 1891.

Charles John Wolhaupter was born in 1825, became a teacher; lived in Australia for seven years; returned to New Brunswick and was drowned in 1858.

George Philip Wolhaupter was born in 1827; worked as a clerk in the Surveyor-General’s office; and 1854 graduated in engineering from King’s College, Fredericton. He served as organist and choir master at Christ Church Cathedral and was known for his collection of wildflowers and his skill in decorating programs for the Cathedral services. In 1858, he married Harriett Amelia Carman. Their son, Benjamin, was born in 1859. When George died in 1860, his wife and son moved to Sarnia, Ontario. Benjamin Wolhaupter possessed great mechanical ability, and ultimately became an engineer who specialized in railroad tracks. He took out 215 patents for inventions, and was a successful manufacturer and businessman. He died in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1949.

The Wolhaupter Collection contains a variety of items, which refer to four generations of the family, and date from 1790 to 1950. Although it is not a large collection, (it measures 5 centimeters), correspondence, certificates, diary and plans, which are included, provide valuable insight into the members of this talented family.”

8 Part of a diary of George P. Wolhaupter, a clerk in the Crown Land Office, which contains climatic recordings, orthnilogical and botanical observations, as well as a good deal of local news from Fredericton, also contains much on music; May 19-September 7, 1846.

Today, while we waited for the snow to stick, we went to the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.

Leaving for an adventure at 1:00 in the afternoon is not ideal: it’s downright dangerous. You’ve got: Miss Q who’s missing her rest time – no, she doesn’t nap anymore, but she needs down time, all the same; the car, which has the potential to lull Miss Q to sleep – bad because even a 5 minute nap guarantees she’s up until 10 p.m.; her mum (me) who enjoys lounging on the couch at 1:00 watching Oprah, while drinking tea, not wrangling children; and, well, I think that’s it. Miss S is pretty much moveable after being fed these days.

Miss S was the reason we were so late in our adventuring. After being up from 3:30 – 5 a.m. she slept until 10 a.m. Lovely, as Q and I spent some quality time together; unlovely because I only slept from 5 – 7:45 when Miss Q woke me by singing, “It’s morning,” and opening the curtains – who taught her that??

It felt like highway robbery, flashing my annual pass and declaring I had two children under 3. A free adventure; a cold day – what could be better?

We had the entire aquarium to ourselves. There was one group of 15 college-aged students, and the littles, and me. Miss Q, who was dressed like an alien – her hair in five twisted knots and clothes as green as she could find – got to knock on the “submarine hatch” to make it open so we could entire the site.

Once inside we took our time studying each tank before moving to the next; a huge change from the last time we visited, when Miss S was 3-weeks-old, and Miss Q had raced through the building at warp-speed – we were out in 15 minutes. This time, it took us almost an hour.

While Miss S stared, hypnotized by the fish and water, Miss Q excitedly pointed to the different species. This was the first trip where they were entertained by the same thing.

Miss Q’s favourite was the anemone with two starfish legs sticking out of his mouth. ”But crabby will come rescue starfish,” she said, not concerned, just stating a fact that the crab, keeping his distance from the anemone, would pull the starfish out of death’s door.

Miss Q knelt nose-to-nose with a Moray Eel. She (the eel) gave me the heebie-geebies, but Miss Q insisted we search for her boyfriend. Turns out (creepily) that her boyfriend was snuggled in the cave with her. ”She has teeth like this.” Miss Q gnashed her front teeth over her bottom lip.

“Yes, but your teeth aren’t so yellow and pointy.”

Miss Q’s biggest disappointment was the baby octopus wasn’t anywhere to be found. ”He probably swam away.” Probably – or he ended as calamari for one of his tank mates.

$1.69 later, our free adventure stopped being free. A crab pin, that for some bizarre reason says, ‘crab cakes’ struck me as a fine present for my petite Jacques Cousteau. I should have bought Miss S the ‘do you need a hug?’ octopus, but I only had a Twoonie. (I literally had to remind myself that eventually Miss S will get things when Miss Q doesn’t… this equalization might take a few years.)

Running back to the car through the blinding ice-pellets, Miss Q declared we needed to get Daddy to do it all over again. Miss S and I agreed.

I tried to stay up to date on the whole blogging thing over Thanksgiving break, and made a valiant effort at first, but then I failed. And for that I am sorry-ish. Truth be told, I was just too busy and having too much fun, which is why I am not fully sorry. It was great going home for a week, I got to see some of my friends that I haven’t seen in months~ for those that I did see, it was so great to see you and I can’t wait to hang out over Christmas break! For those that I didn’t see~ Obviously, we aren’t that great of friends, and please don’t expect me to drop what I am doing to hang out with you over Christmas break Not kidding. Seeing which people make efforts and plans to see you over breaks really gives you a good idea of who actually is a friend. Anyways…

I was out to lunch with one of my friends that I used to work with, and she was telling me about how she wants to go to physician’s assistant school. This made me laugh. Why you may ask? Does she have a terrible bedside manner? Nope. Is she easily irritable? Nope. Does she get grossed out by sick people? No. I started laughing because she, much like myself, hate to touch people (in general). As I was telling her this, she retorted by reminding me that I too hate having to touch people, and I too am going into health care.

I know what you are thinking, “This girl is a complete fucking moron, going into a hands on profession when she doesn’t want to be hands on, fucking idiot!” But, please don’t judge me. I have a bubble of space. It is my bubble, and I am very protective of keeping its perimeter secure. I am not naturally a cuddly person. I am not a touchy person. I don’t like having to shake hands with strangers that I am just meeting because Christ only knows what may be lurking on their hands! *Again I work in health care, and really some people are just dirty and sick and you don’t want to know what they’ve been putting their grubby hands on*Even with family members, close friends, and [B] (I do cuddle with [B] now, but it took awhile, and we don’t do it all the time or anything), I am not very huggy/cuddly with them either. I just like my space, and I guess I am somewhat independent, I don’t know.

As far as strangers or people I encounter in day to day activities that I don’t know well, I get really grossed out if they touch me. Like I want to scrub the affected areas and then give them a dirty look for invading my space! Trust me, I have seen what is wrong with a lot of these people, very often it is contagious, and I just don’t want to risk it.

I think that it’s kind of like that whole clown fish and sea anemone deal. I am the anemone, I will sting and want to hurt you if you get close to me because I have no idea who the hell you are or what you may have on you. The people that I am close to, ie: if we do so happen to brush hands or something, I do not want to vomit, are like the clown fish. I know them, they are cool, not dirty, or sketchy and they are immune to my neurotic ways.

Face of El Cabrillo

I’ve named the above rock. Meet “El Cabrillo”. El Cabrillo, meet the blog readers.

El Cabrillo lives in the Tidal Pools at the Cabrillo National Monument Park in San Diego. He was staring up at the walkers traversing on the backs of his brothers and sisters along the pools.

I spotted him immediately. Forget looking for anemones and crabs and seaweed. There was a face in the rocks! We could return home perfectly satisfied.

Chris and his girlfriend

Oh what a lovely day! I spent the night at a motel in Little Italy. Up at 5 a.m. once again (forced myself to lie abed until the late morning hour of 6) and then explored the streets. Ate a breakfast Panini and coffee along India Street before sitting in a courtyard to write 2,000 words of the novel along with the most delicious coffee in the Universe. Well, good coffee anyway.

We attended another farmer’s market and then picnicked near Balboa Park under eucalyptus trees. I wondered why there wasn’t any grass beneath our feet. The kids explained that planted grass needs watering; therefore, many places remain grass-free.

Later in the day we ventured to the Cabrillo National Monument park. It was so cool. I loved it. First we viewed the skyline of San Diego and the hundreds of white sails on the ocean. I won’t show you this view because the little Sony Cybershot refuses to do justice to wider views, to skylines. So forget the sweeping panoramic views of the magnificent ocean. You can look at closeups instead.

Seaweed in the tidal pools

I kept gushing, “Oh this is wonderful! Oh, isn’t this great?” as we explored the tidal pools. Chris said, “I am a little underwhelmed, Mom.” But later after we viewed the crabs and fish and anemones he changed his mind, I think. He may not have been overwhelmed like his mama, but he was impressed. And so was his girlfriend.

Curved tidal pool

You wouldn’t believe how slippery the rocks were. I mean they were slippery. You had to pray you wouldn’t fall into the underwater world of those sea creatures. Some of us less agile folks had to crawl along the rocks, placing the feet very carefully. You wanted hands to help you jump over pools and seaweed-covered slime. You thought to yourself, “How old am I anyway? At what age should you stop clamouring over slippery rocks?”

Christopher and his mama

Some nice volunteers gave us advice about the creatures in the tide pools. They showed me a little green worm, a magnificent find! They shared the names of the amazing sea-beings. I would have called the following sea creature an “urchin” but the kind lady explained that it was an anemone. Isn’t it cool?

Anemone

Another exciting thing happened. A woman gave me a new name. She was attempting to coral her three children into a cave for a photograph. “Grace, Grace, come on in the picture!” she kept saying. And then she turned to me, who was standing three feet from her and gasped. “Oh no, I thought you were Grace! I am so sorry.” “It’s OK,” I said, and we both looked at Grace who was crawling on some nearby slippery rocks. “Guess you have a new name now,” the woman told me, “Your name is Grace.”

OK, I’ll take it. My new name is Grace.

A bird who doesn't feel well

Grace (the real Grace) and her sisters approached a nearby black bird who refused to move. They finally stood about a foot from the bird before the park volunteers urged them away, “The bird isn’t feeling well today; please leave him alone,” the volunteer kindly explained to the sisters.

When we got in the car, Christopher noted, “You talk to a LOT of people.” Yes. It’s true. I am fascinated by people.

Hope you enjoyed the tour of the tidal pools.

Love, Grace

Creator: Bones (creator), Jinsei Kataoka, Kazuma Kondou (authors)
Chapters: 23
Volumes: 6
Genre: Adventure, Mecha, Romance
Protagonist: Renton Thurston

I first watched the anime of Eureka Seven two or three years ago (whenever it was aired on YTV). And I was completely floored by it. There is something very lovable and enduring about both the storyline and the cast of it. So, after I was done catching up-to-date on Naruto, Bleach and all that jazz, I decided to read through Eureka Seven. It had been a few years since I’ve seen the anime but I still adored it and loved it and wished I could watch it again, so the manga seemed like a good route to go in.

The manga takes a different route than the anime does, the ending being less happy. The manga also has a shorter storyline compared to the anime and different outcomes, but it’s still a good read and there are a few similarities. There’s probably spoilers in this post cause I just can’t control myself (especially when it’s about Holland, who is godly 8D)

Renton

Eureka Seven is the story of Renton Thurston, a fourteen year old boy who is dissatisfied with his life in his small town where nothing interesting or dangerous ever happens. He’s been here is whole life, living with his grandfather, his father (who has since passed) and his sister Diane (until she leaves them). And his father, Adrock Thurston, is seen as a hero so it depresses him even more when everyone talks about how much he doesn’t live up to his father’s name. Renton reads the ray=out magazine, a mag put out by the infamous Gekko State. Renton admires them and their lifting skills, especially Holland, their leader. One day, he meets Eureka, a member of the Gekko State and the pilot of the Nirvash. The Nirvash is damaged and needs fixing so Renton and his grandfather begin work on it (as his grandfather is a mechanic). When their garage is suddenly under attack by the military who’s chasing after Eureka (as the Gekko State is wanted by the military). Eureka goes to fight time and Renton comes along with her.

After this, Renton ends up joining the Gekko State but finds the glorious life he thought they had from reading ray=out isn’t exactly the case. Holland doesn’t act like a big hero (as sexy as he is. He likes to bum around in his underpants and drink lots of coffee). Talho, the pilot, as beautiful as she may look, can be very aggressive and demanding. The other members of the crew like to pick on him and make him do various, little tasks for them that they’re too lazy to do themselves. The three children Eureka had “adopted” bully him. They’re often under attack by the military. And their cargo transport business doesn’t pay enough for them to always have food enough for all of them (considering there’s 18 of them on board). They also pay little attention to anything he says and don’t take him seriously. He finds the only reason he’s really there is because Eureka seems to think he’s helpful in piloting the Nirvash. He also starts developing feelings for her that she doesn’t seem to notice, especially since she doesn’t show a lot of emotion.

Eureka

The reader is also introduced to the side of the military. Here, we meet Dominic, second-in-command under Dewey (Holland’s older brother! But you’re not supposed to know that yet 8D), who is recently released after being imprisoned. We also meet Anemone, a girl who looks very much like Eureka but works for the military (or more specifically, Dewey, as he is the only one she listens to) and acts very different from her, being much more aggressive, demanding and has an obsession with eating sweets. It appears that Dewey is after Eureka because she is a Coralian (if you don’t understand any of the terminology, by the way, google it 8D) and more perfect than Anemone is.

I don’t actually want to spoil any of the story because this is one of those stories were a lot of it’s important and it’s an amazing read so I don’t want to ruin it for everyone. I’ll probably just start ranting about random things, such as the characters and what have you. Because they are awesome~~~. And ultimately, one of the best casts I can think of in a manga. Especially since they aren’t trying so hard to make everyone seem so special and unique like some series do.

Renton Thurston: Renton is our lovely protagonist. He’s a fourteen-year-old boy who’s the son of renown hero, Adrock Thurston, and grandson of a fairly famous mechanic. The thing about Renton that I find so appealing is that he’s easy to relate to. He is particularly hyper-active to the point of being exhausting or does he come from a mysterious past so he’s all brooding and dark and what not. He’s your average everyday boy that has a reaction that’s believable to the things that are happening to him. And his romance with Eureka is believable as well because it seems mostly just like a teenage boy getting some big old crush on a pretty girl when it starts but it develops. He’s not your typical piece of hot stud who’s good at everything. He’s bullied by the other members of Gekko State and can’t lift spectacularly like they can (falling on his face at one point) and sometimes he’s scared and can’t handle things. But he never gives up and is fiercely loyal to not only those of the Gekko State but those he considers his friends and family. And that’s pretty admirable in any main character. The fact he’s keeping it real just adds to his lovability.

Holland

Eureka: She’s a Coralian (google the term!) who was found in human form. She was part of the military with Holland and some of the others but left with him when he deflected and formed the Gekko State. Eureka doesn’t show a lot of emotion, something she’s sort of incapable of doing right away in the manga. She also looks after three children who she has “adopted” and refer to her as mama. For the most part, she’s oblivious to Renton’s feelings until later on. Eureka’s a very enduring character. Both her past and her destiny in the series is very heart-warming, and a little heart-breaking. As a heroine, I personally love Eureka. Unlike a lot of heroines, she isn’t immediately in love with her hero or does she deny any feelings for him (as she doesn’t really understand them but she isn’t actually in denial). And she grows a lot as both a person and a ‘human being’ throughout the story.

Holland Novak: This man is Eureka Seven’s sex god (I’m totally biased in favor of him. I think I have a thing for airship captains @w@). He’s my favorite character, in case you can’t tell. Holland is the leader of the Gekko State, former member of the military, younger brother of Dewey, and coffee enthusiast. When he’s first mentioned in the story, he’s Renton’s hero and seems like an unbelievably awesome guy. That isn’t really the case as he’s very hot tempered, severely dislikes insubordination and not nearly the calm, cool, collected guy the ray=out magazine puts him out to be. But his concern for his crew and their safety is genuine and he’s not one to go against the saying “a captain goes down with his ship”. By the end of the manga, he has become that hero that Renton originally thought him to be, which is awesome sauce. He holds a strong hatred for his elder brother, which I don’t blame him cause Dewey is a poohead.

Anemone: Anemone is fucking crazy. And I love her for it. She’s a Coralian, like Eureka, and looks a lot like her. She also loves eating sweets. I believe Anemone’s one of those characters your heart goes out to. She seems like she’s this nasty girl when first introduced but by the end of the manga, you can’t help but feel bad for her. She goes through a lot of shit, the first of it just being used by Dewey who she really seems to care for and look up to.

Dominic Sorel: Dominic isn’t as important as some of the others (he seems more important in the manga than the anime, but maybe it’s cause I can’t remember much from the anime right now), but he deserves his own section. Because, like Anemone, Dewey puts the poor boy through hell that he really doesn’t deserve. And his ending in the manga is much, much sadder than that of the anime, which makes him an even more interesting character. But, he really does get put through a lot. Especially when it comes down to his feelings for Anemone, which are obviously not returned, and what his feelings towards being treated as a tool by Dewey to the fact he has real feelings as a person.

Those are the only ones I’m gonna get into, but here’s the rest of the important cast:

Dewey Novak: Holland’s older brother and colonel in the military. One of our antagonists. (I say one for reasons that are obvious at the end)
Talho Yuki: Pilot of the Moonlight (Gekko). And romantic interest of Holland.
Hap: second-in-command of the Gekko State. Was the one who convinced Holland to desert.
Mattieu: member of the Gekko State and pilot of the LFO 606.
Hilda: member of the Gekko State and pilot of the LFO 808.
Gidget: member of the Gekko State. Sensor and is in charge of communications on the bridge.
Moondoggie: member of the Gekko State. In charge of the LFO catapult.
Stoner: member of the Gekko State and writer of the ray=out magazine.
Ken-Goh: member of the Gekko State and chief gunner (weapons) of the Moonight.
Mischa: the Gekko State’s doctor.
Gonzy: originally a stole-away. Normally sits around on the ship and helps the others with their problems.
Jobs: member of the Gekko State. Originally a stole away with Woz. In charge of hardware.
Woz: member of the Gekko State. Originally a stole-away with Jobs. In charge of software.

Finalllllllly~

Anyways, read Eureka Seven. Like right now. Then go watch the anime. 8D

Garden cleanup and winter preparation continue at a leisurely pace, along with playing “musical plants” to make way for new arrivals. After a fatiguing day at work last week I relished the task of transplanting my ‘Puget Gold’ apricot from a pot to its permanent ground residence inside the house yard. That felt more productive than the entire workday!

Nonplussed. What is it with this word? I know the word means utterly perplexed, but that’s not

Nonplussed. What is it with this word? I know the word means utterly perplexed, but that’s not what it sounds like it should mean and it’s not how people use it. Twice in the last week, I’ve heard people use the word “nonplussed” to mean “unconcerned” or “unaffected.” I didn’t correct them. I think that’s what it should mean, dammit. Who defined this one? (Bonus: While painstakingly researching this post in the same meticulous and methodical way I fact-check every single thing I ever write in Zebra Sounds, I stumbled upon this article, 9 Words That Don’t Mean What You Think They Mean. It has vocabulary. It’s funny. It includes pictures of women in bathing suits. Something for everyone.)

The spelling of “poignant.” (And in the interest of full disclosure, I misspelled it here, and just let spell check correct me. Which is what I do every time. You would think that eventually I would learn to spell the word, but I believe I’ve developed a sort of mental block.) Oh, and I consistently have trouble with “buoyed.” I have so much trouble with “buoyed” that the previous sentence took me around five minutes to write. I could not even get close enough for spell check to hazard a guess. I had to go find an essay in which I knew I’d used the word, and then come back here and type it in. From now on, I’m using “heartened.” When you see the word “heartened” you’ll know I mean “buoyed.”

Unanimous. I can write it, but I have trouble saying. Same with anemone and anonymous. I really don’t like my N’s and M’s too close together. Makes me sound like I’m four years old. I can only hope people find it adorkable.

Chartreuse. According to Wikipedia, it’s a color “precisely halfway between green and yellow,” but I always think of bright pink, a sort of vibrant magenta. It’s not a big deal. Chartreuse doesn’t come up a lot for me. I run with a crowd for whom the word chartreuse would seem pretentious and unnecessary. “Look at that chartreuse purse,” I might say, and they’d say, “Ooo, chartreuse aren’t you the little miss arty-high-fashion-highfalutin-vocabulary princess?” Or they’d probably say, “That would be very impressive, j, if only the purse weren’t pink.”

“Turn left” (or “right”) as a command issued from the passenger seat of my car. I don’t know why it is that when I’m driving the words “left” and “right” become completely interchangeable and seem to have no bearing whatsoever on what I do at the moment of truth.

Okay, so… what trips you up?

September & October have been very rushed and busy with work, causing me to almost miss the best part of fall. In my last post, I managed to catch a little of it and yesterday I caught up with a little more. I didn’t know Daphne odora bloomed in the fall!

Cyclamen hederifolium

My friend Angela at Parkdale Gardens Design Service is a plant collector and gave me this Cyclamen as well as many of my perennials. She owned Parkdale Gardens for decades and now offers local and internet design services after closing her nursery.

Anemone

As I strolled through my garden, what a surprise to find so much in bloom since our day of snow last week. The temperature has soared back up into the 50’s giving my garden one last breath before it’s winter sleep. The anemone above was given to me by a friend long ago before I knew what I was doing and has managed to survive my many mistakes.

Tricyrtis

The toad lilies are finally blooming! At least one of my varieties has opened her beautiful eyes and honored me with her presence before a hard frost hits. Glad I didn’t miss one of my favorites! Not sure which variety this is as I’ve moved them from place to place and managed to lose all their tags in the process.

I believe this is Three Birds Flying, given to me by another plant collecting friend, Judy. It can become rampant but is easy to pull out and blooms late spring through fall for me.

Even found a small clump of Purple Coneflowers in bloom. The weather so strange this year, left me with few flowers from this otherwise prolific bloomer.

Aster

I love this tall pink aster. It’s so bright it glows and calls me to it. Even though my clump is small I divided it a few weeks ago to add it in other areas of my garden. If I had time I’d rush out to the nurseries right now and buy more!

Gaura 'Whirling Butterflies'

The wispy Gaura is a great segue between plants.

Gaura lindheimeri

I love ‘Siskiyou Pink’. Gaura is another of those plants I plan to buy more varieties of. Yes, even collect them! I can’t help myself. Why have only one when you can have ten. Or twenty for that matter!

Buddleia davidii ‘Honeycomb’

Another surprise as all my other Butterfly bush flowers are gone now, was to find ‘Honeycomb’ still blooming away. Nothing like cheery yellow added to the fall reds and oranges to spice up the end of season.

Pink Rose

Even the deer surprised me by leaving yet another rose for me to enjoy during these last days. That’s two for me and … er…ummmm…. hundreds for the deer!

Baby's Breath

Another pink, although a much smaller scale is the sweet ‘Baby’s Breath’ that I started from seed. It grew into a robust shrub until I moved it to a new location where it’s remained rather pouty for two years. I look forward to seeing it next year, fully loaded with little babies.

Hollyhock bud

I think my biggest surprise was finding this Hollyhock bud! I didn’t know they bloomed this late!! I’d better go check to see if it survived the deer last night. In case you’re wondering why I haven’t sprayed liquid fence, I’ve simply run out of time due to my work schedule.

Unknown pink flower

Last but not least another gift from my friend Judy. I don’t know what this is, other than a low growing summer bloomer. It seems familiar and I should know its name but alas I don’t. If you know, please tell me!

Thanks for stopping by! Until next time….

If you use a little imagination you’ll find this Anemone offers another illustration of story building, starting with the heart of the story, the central idea, and building around that with a tight outline of supporting basics, and finally writing the gorgeous details, layer upon layer. You don’t see beauty in the bud, only its potential. The glory of its creation is evident once it has reached full maturity.
