First let me say that I was contacted and told that I didn’t have the look, they were looking for. I was too fair. I knew I should have dyed my hair dark. I had to resort to plan B - I found the river in the state park. Apparently they are cracking down and security is high. I found a reed that I could breath through and started my journey underwater. Do you have any idea how hard it is to WALK against a current? Never mind the different depth to the bottom even 5 feet away from the banks of the river. I had to make my way back to camp and get my other gear if I was going to be successful. I did just that and returned an hour later.

I did finally reach the set filming site about an hour and a half later. The problem was that filming had lasted only 7 hours and they finished up two hours before I arrived. That’s how the above picture was taken. That was my arrival and the photo was taken by a very nice security guard that even sent me the photo via email as long as I promised to leave. I thought to myself ” Of course I’m leaving, Mr Depp is probably very upset that I was late and he had to move on to the next filming site. After all they are wrapping up this movie” I knew I had let him down. I agreed with the man before me and made my way back to camp. I didn’t know how I was going to make this up to Johnny. Mr Depp, AKA TONTO. I felt just awful. Here he was embracing nature – becoming one with it. Feeling his native roots. I didn’t complete my mission. I could just see his disappointment from miles away.

When the photo of myself was emailed to me, I did ask the gentleman in a return email to send a copy to Mr Depp. It would show Johnny, and prove to him that I tried.

I have several Google alerts and a lead as to where he was filming next. I must be quicker this time. I’m moving my camp site closer to the new filming site. It may however involve buying some repelling gear. More to come.

I took my gear out to the sands today and I’m set up and ready to retire for the evening. I had some problems setting up camp today. Okay, I’m letting everyone know that New Mexico has snakes. I was setting up my camping stuff. Tent, making a fire pit for this evening and as I was doing my business – ( It’s camping – go with it – ya gotta do what ya gotta do) I glanced over to my right and realized I had no privacy. I didn’t have my camera with me – of course, but I can tell you what expression the snake had on it’s face:

I think – in my opinion it was amused, and perhaps in awe. I carefully stood up and made my way back to my camp. I wasn’t about to pull up my pants because any sudden action may cause the snake to attack. However I didn’t have any problems moving slowly. Shuffling actually.

I have found the filming site and I will be infiltrating tomorrow afternoon if I have not heard back from the casting agent. (She did say that everyone would be contacted by the 21st.) For now, I am going to call it a day. It’s 12 am.

Tomorrow I will be meeting Mr Depp AKA TONTO face to face. I’m still debating on if I should be wearing my own face paint when we meet.

Yours Truly,

The Stonewood Restaurant – it was fantastic. It’s located at the Angelfire Country Club. I had a very good time. The food was fantastic and they serve very good Long Island Teas.

As the evening progressed I started to take note of the males at the table. One senior citizen, one black gentleman, and one other that I felt and still feel was MR Depp himself. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy and he did provide a very good challenge. There aren’t many people who can see through Mr Depp’s disguises but I have years of experience on my side. As we sat at dinner I started to take note of this man and his mannerisms. I also had to remember that Mr Depp is a very talented actor and could be hiding some of his natural mannerisms. After all he did say with today’s technology he could very well play Carol Channing.
I spoke with this man and asked him what he did for a living. He told me that he was the owner of an eclectic shop in Angelfire. He stated that some of the crew members from the Lone Ranger had bought some items in his shop to be used as props at the filming location. I asked him if he knew where this location was at, and he said he had a pretty good idea. As we talked he divulged where this location was at, and I quickly added it to my phone. I asked him “Johnny, how much longer will you be filming before it wraps up?’ The man looked at me puzzled and answered, “Excuse me, um, my name is Walter.” “AH, W A L T E R, “ I said. Alright I understand.

I did for a moment begin to think that this man really Walter. I was almost sure now that either this man was who he said he was, OR Mr Depp almost had me fooled. At any rate – I looked him over.

Conceptualized by Ryder Ripps, a 25 year old New York artist, Internet Archaeology is a website dedicated to uncovering “graphic artifacts” from early Internet culture.

As part of their mission, Internet Archaeology states:

Archaeology is an ongoing effort which puts preservation paramount. Unlike traditional archaeology, where physical artifacts are unearthed; Internet Archaeology’s artifacts are digital, thus more temporal and transient. Yet we believe that these artifacts are no less important than say the cave paintings of Lascaux. They reveal the origins of a now ubiquitous Internet Culture; showing where we have been and how far we have come.

The website will bring a flood of memories for any early internet explorer and a few chuckles as well. It’s also addicting, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.

I know I promised you all my favorite new television shows of 2011, but I was too lazy to write a blog post on Monday night. Well, actually I could hardly move because of all the food I’d ingested, but either way. Here they are: Hart of Dixie, 2 Broke Girls, The Secret Circle, and New Girl.

The real purpose of this post is to share with you my favorite reads of 2011. Now, this is a hard thing to do because there are just so many that I enjoyed, and picking a top 10 is difficult. Strangely, for me picking a number 1 wasn’t hard at all – there is one book I read this year (and have raved about on this blog previously) that completely blew me away. That said, each of these books won my heart.

Here by Denise Grover Swank

Denise is my longtime critique partner, and this year she took the self-publishing plunge. The decision has been good for her, and she has flown past any expectations either she or I had. Denise writes tight prose, interesting, deep characters, and stories that keep you turning pages until you’re done. Here is her first YA offering, and it is no exception. The story offers all of those things, plus an innovative element/twist that will bend your mind and get you thinking that question we all love – “what if?”

Fall For Anything by Courtney Summers

I’ve loved everything Courtney has published, but this one is my favorite of hers to date. Up until now, Courtney’s stories have been brutally, painfully, beautifully (whoa that’s a lot of adverbs) true. Sometimes humans aren’t poetic or pretty or nice at all – but that’s what makes us human, and Courtney is an expert at shoving her characters under a microscope and showing us, through their struggles, how beautiful the pain can be if we overcome it.

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

You might have read Stephanie’s first book last year, Anna and the French Kiss, which was a huge contemporary success. Stephanie’s books are full of the longing, hesitation, and expectation of first crushes that sometimes turn into first love, and reading them makes me both miss those days and happy I never have to experience them again. I loved Lola even more than Anna, and, in my opinion, no one writes teenage girls better than Stephanie Perkins.

County Line by Bill Cameron

This is the fourth book I’ve read by Bill, and though I love them all, County Line really steps outside what I believed was his comfort zone. That said, he totally nails it, and this is one of my favorites of not only the year, but of his stories as well. If you’ve read his previous offerings, I’m sure you love Ruby Jane as much as I did, and County Line takes us not only inside her rather mysterious past, but inside her mind, and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey – even though it also broke my heart.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Yes, I know this didn’t come out in 2011, but I finally got around to reading it in 2011, since the movie was slated to come out, and wow. I can’t believe I waited this long. I would guess that many people have the attitude that I do, which is I sometimes don’t read books that a million people are saying is so good. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m obstinate. But this book? Exceeded my very high expectations. I laughed. I cried. I hated when it was over. This book is truly a treasure.

Invincible Summer by Hannah Moskowitz

I didn’t expect this book, which is one of the many reasons I ended up loving it so much. There are a million young adult books, especially contemporary novels, that not only focus on romance, but leave families out of the equation, because, as we all know, they complicate matters. Hannah doesn’t do that, and at the heart of this book is a real, loving, dysfunctional family. She doesn’t pull any punches, and her ability to do that with complete honesty makes me excited to see where her career will go from here.

The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab

Reading this novel is like stepping inside a dream of a story you heard as a child, whispered by the wind and curled deep into your mind by time and the safety you felt in your childhood bed. This tale is different, but familiar. Strange, but recognizable. It’s not like any other novel I read this year, and left me feeling half-asleep for hours after I put it down.

Like Mandarin by Kirsten Hubbard

The fact that this novel didn’t reach the audience it deserves makes me sad. Instead of the typical girl meets boy centric story lines that pervade literature for teenagers, Kirsten explores instead the complicated relationships between girls, especially during the years we’re all figuring out not only who we are, but who we want to be. This is a special book, easily one of my favorites of the year.

How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr

I discovered Sara Zarr earlier in 2011 and became an immediate fan of both her work and her passion for writing for teens. When I learned they would be giving away a few advanced copies of this title at BEA, I camped out until the Little, Brown reps coughed them up. Let me tell you, she doesn’t disappoint. How to Save a Life is a masterpiece of characterization. Even though one (and at times both) of the point-of-view characters are difficult to read or like, they’re never hard to root for. The common thread in Sara’s writing is her ability to break my heart, then piece it back together again while exposing the possibilities in human nature.

Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts

I’ve beaten everyone over the head with my recommendation to read this book. I’m like a broken record, but I just don’t want to stop until everyone has discovered what a gem this story is, so at home in the explosion of dystopian literature this year, but bringing so much more to the discussion. The novel has elements that will leave you breathless, it has characters you can’t forget, and a world that feels terrifyingly real – but it also has something to say. It frightened me with the way it laid bare the truth of what we should be afraid of – the dark, twisted urges that lay inside all of our minds.

So that’s my top ten. I have to give honorable mentions to these, also: A Game of Thrones (George RR Martin), Angelfire (Courtney Allison Moulton), Never Let Me Go (Kazua Ishiguro), The Dark and Hollow Places (Carrie Ryan), The Night Circus (Erin Morgenstern), The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox (Maggie O’Farrell), and Divergent (Veronica Roth). Nearly all of these authors have previous books or titles being released in 2012 and I, for one, am looking forward to what they offer up next.

What are your favorite books of the 2011?

Does anyone else write down book release dates on their calendar? Because I do. The second I get a date, it’s scrawled on the calendar in a colored pen so fast the ink gets mussed. I got a calendar as a present and that was the first thing I did. Thank you, Goodreads. Here’s a list of books I’m waiting for and their release dates! If you see one that’s on yours too, SQUEE WITH ME. If there are ones that aren’t on here, and that fact BLOWS your MIND, tell me in the comments! You can never get too many books.

JESSICA RULES THE DARK SIDE by Beth Fantasky (Jessica #2)

Release Date: Jan 10

Why: Because I’m honestly curious what Fantasky is going to do, since I was so sure the first book–Jessica’s Guide to Dating the Dark Side–was a stand alone novel. It certainly didn’t leave any loose ends or anything. It was genuinely interesting and a new take on vampirism, so I enjoyed it. I may or may not be a sucker for “what happens after the fairytale ending” stories. Plus, Lucian was a hot vampire. Sign me up!

HALLOWED by Cynthia Hand (Unearthly #2)

Release Date: January 17

Why: I linked to my review of the first book, Unearthly, which will talk more about my feelings about the book, but I will say again that I am genuinely curious how Hallowed is going to unfold, not just plot-wise but also writing style-wise. Unearthly was good but slow, though I was too intrigued by Hand’s take on angelicism to put it down. I think without the time constraints that she was limited to by her own plot conventions in the first book, Hand can really do something special with this one. Or at least I’m hoping. You’ll certainly be the first to know when I figure it out! I’ve already got it pre-ordered.

EVERNEATH by Brodi Ashton

Release date: Jan 24

Why: THIS BOOK SOUNDS SO COOL. Alright, blurbs can often be very misleading, but, come on. This book has a really, really neat concept as described here. It’s been advertised on inkpop and all over Goodreads, and I can’t help but cave. It probably won’t be on my instantly pre-ordered list because of all the series I’m excited to further and finish, but I most definitely want to pick it up when I get the chance.

WINGS OF THE WICKED by Courtney Allison Moulton (Angelfire #2)

Release Date: Jan 31

Why: Angelfire made me go gaga, plain and simple. Just…gaga. The storyline is awesome, the mythology is awesome, the twists were awesome, the romance is awesome and the guy is one I would love to date. Need I say more? Because I will, actually. The end of book one left opened up twists that I sure as heck didn’t see coming and left more questions than answers, and I NEED ANSWERS. It’s already been preordered and I am counting down days.

FEVER by Lauren DeStefano (The Chemical Garden #2)

Release Date: February 21st

Why: Alright, yes, my book review of the first book–Wither–wasn’t completely complimentary, but I can’t help but be intrigued. DeStefano handled some really tough issues really well and wrote in some great relationship stuff (and some not great, but I hold onto hope)…and the blurb talks about Rhine and Gabriel ending up in a “twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls.” Maybe I’m a sucker. Maybe I’m a big sucker. But come on. This is crazy enough it just might work, and Wither was good enough that I’m not ready to give up on this world quite yet.

SPELL BOUND by Rachel Hawkins (Hex Hall #3)

Release Date: March 13

Why: WHY DO I NEED TO TELL YOU? Ahem. Anyways. Have you read these? Because you need to read these. Yes, girl at magical boarding school has been tried and tried again, but I am in LOVE. LOVE. LOVE with this books. They are interesting, they are funny, they are will written and the love interest(s) are to die for. Oh, and it is SO NOT FAIR how Hawkins just leaves you hanging again and again. …I am very impatient when I just NEED to know what happens next, you may have noticed. I tend to pre-order by month, so you know what I’ll be doing March 1st instead of celebrating my father’s birthday.

INSURGENT by Veronica Roth (Divergent #2)

Release Date: May 1

Why: Divergent may or may not have been overhyped for a reason. It isn’t groundbreaking amazingness, but it is pretty darn near close. I’ve yet to read a dystopian that I’ve enjoyed this much. It was the realist, and the one I connected the most with. It had pretty much everything I look for in a book, plus I truly enjoy reading Roth’s writing. It’s easy but it sends a message clearly, which is really hard to do. It started a new wave of dystopian trends for a reason. If you haven’t read it yet, READ IT.

CITY OF LOST SOULS by Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments #5)

Release Date: May 8

Why: CASSANDRA CLARE. That should be enough for anybody. I’ll admit, I was almost a little upset when Clare decided she was going to write 3 more books in this series instead of keeping it at a trilogy as planned, but that doesn’t stop me from being a freakish fan girl. Jace and Clary make me so amazingly happy–not to mention Alec and Magnus and Simon and–everybody. Let’s just go with everybody. The last book wasn’t great; it was almost like Clare was actually making stuff up to keep the series going. Now, half of the people I talk to are pretty sure she was actually doing that, but goodness don’t SHOW it. Either way, sign me up for this one and all the rest. I just can’t put these books down EVER.

Google is just one of the many companies that has noticed the lowly display ad is making an online comeback.

One of the first forms of digital marketing was the lowly banner ad. Splashed across the top of every Geocities and Angelfire site, these primitive ancestors of the slick online advertising campaigns that now drive revenue at the most visited websites were often gaudy, noisy and annoying. But the banner ad is back. Big time.

Display-related advertising, of which banner ads are the most prevalent kind, accounted for 37% of all online ad revenue in the United States during the first half of 2011, which translates into US$5.5 billion.

The reason: The large and heavy user base of prime online real estate such as Facebook, Yahoo and YouTube don’t want to be immersed in gaudy advertising. Indeed, one of every three display ads appears on a social-media site. Facebook, boasting 750 million users, accounted for about 15% of total display advertising revenue in the U.S. in the third quarter, according to data from ComScore Inc.

The web’s current advertising kingpin Google, meanwhile, accounts for about 10% of online display advertising in the U.S.

However, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company is looking to expand beyond the little blue links that appear next to its web-query responses. The company has reported that spending on the Google Display Network — which reaches about 90% of the global Internet audience by providing online ads for sites around the world — by the largest 1,000 advertisers has more than doubled over the past 12 months.

According to Eileen Naughton, Google’s managing director for display operations and strategy, the company’s plan to become a leader in display advertising stretches back to its decision to purchase YouTube for US$1.65-billion five years ago, which was followed up by the acquisition of ad network DoubleClick a year-and-a-half later.

“In that one-two punch we signalled Google’s intent to move well beyond search advertising and to bring technology improvements to bear on other forms of digital advertising, including rich media and display ads,” says Naughton, who was president of Time Inc. before joining Google.

Part of the revenue Google plans to grab will come from making the online advertising supply chain more efficient. Roughly 23 cents of every online ad dollar goes toward the various companies involved in getting an ad online. But Wall Street analysts have for years been wondering how Google planned to monetize YouTube.

Rather than develop a single advertising solution — such as AdWords for search — Google has created a number of different ad products for YouTube, including pre-roll ads, overlays and site takeovers. Google has realized that any future growth from its advertising business was going to come from display ads splashed across its own sites such as YouTube and the Google Display Network.

“Google saw that its search business was going to plateau, or grow slower, because it had reached a really big critical mass in most places around the world,” says Paula Gignac, president of the Interactive Advertising Bureau of Canada.

Across the advertising world, marketers are realizing that the shift to digital is inevitable as consumers spend more time online with their iPads and BlackBerrys than they do with their televisions.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau reports that online advertising grew by 23% during the first half of this year, well ahead of the 3% growth reported for all measured media. As spending on digital advertising kicks into high gear, companies will be looking for new ways to reach consumers, which means any ideas — even old ideas such as banner ads — will be given a test drive. The IAB notes that both search and display-related advertising have already registered impressive gains this year, growing 31% and 27%, respectively.

“This is a digital revolution… there’s no going back,” Google’s Naughton says. “The genie is out of this bottle.”

Not available for purchase

This piece was inspired by observing a couple of dear friends having difficulty balancing their male – female continuum. As noted by the “roughness” in some of the transitions from one gender to the other, the relationship and transitions themselves are not all smooth. Both gender features are also somewhat exaggerated, the male figure with sharper angles and the female – round smooth long curves. It is made of “angel fire”, a flamboyant type of alabaster only found in New Mexico, U.S.A. The piece is mounted on wenge, a type of African hardwood. This piece is now in the private collection of the people who inspired it.

This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.
When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers–monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to hell–she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.
A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie’s powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her–an assassin who has already killed her once.
While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie’s soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian’s most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives–including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

“It’s never easy to be chosen, never easy to be called…I can see the writing on the wall, I can’t ignore this war, at the end of it all, who am I living for?” (-Who Am I Living For by Katy Perry). Life. Death. Life. Ellie has been fighting the same war for centuries now, as the reincarnation of a fierce ancient warrior. Life and death, it’s been the same cycle over and over again, until now. Adrenaline and action everywhere, I took Angelfire in with hunger and excitement, full with the utmost love for this book.

Let me set this down on the table–er, blog–Ellie is a kick and bad ass character. I rooted for her from the beginning to the end. She is someone who can use her head–and two bad ass khopesh swords–and she’s one who will never give up. If any of the reapers messed with her, they’d be in heaps of trouble. She can kick their ugly reaper butt, literally. While Ellie has such a big responsibility as the Preliator, she ends up falling for Will. Now come on, who wouldn’t? Sexy, tough, gorgeous, sexyyy… Will has the traits of a kick butt partner and at the same times, those of a great love interest. It’s hard to be the protector of an ancient warrior who reincarnates all the time, having to find her all over again and at the same time fall in love with her. Their relationship was in sync and it developed at the right pace, that I totally relaxed and was satisfied about it. Great partners and great lovers.

Being able to kick butt comes with a lot of action. Sometimes, action scenes are really hard to put down into words, just the way you want it to be. Country Allison Moulton got past that and delivered the most visual and detailed descriptions of the fighting scenes. You could practically hear Ellie’s khopesh swords swipe the reaper or hear Will’s knuckles come in contact with a reaper’s jaw. Hell yeah, that’s epic. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the action scenes were WAYY EPIC.

This is one of the best debuts I’ve read. Remarkable plot, writing, and characters, Angelfire and Courtney Allison Moulton deserve all the love I have for this book. I hope the next book matches up, if not tops, this one.

Cover comments

I’m fine with the cover but it would have been interesting to see something more going on. I didn’t expect to see a lot of grey, but it’s a way of letting Ellie, in her red hair, stand out. Honestly, I’m good with this cover and I’m good as well if the cover had a little something more.
