Iowa-born singer Julee Cruise, now living in Manhattan, gained initial attention by contributing to the T.V. series Twins Peaks, working with David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti as a lead vocalist on the theme song “Falling.”  Following the success of the show, the three collaborated on Cruise’s solo album Floating into the Night, a collection of airy, dreamlike songs about love and loneliness.

Her dazzling, 50s-pop inspired work stands quite strong on its own despite the transience and moodiness the music adds as a film soundtrack.  She has performed live on several stages worldwide, including a set on Saturday Night Live.

Currently, she is in pre-production for a new album with NY musicians Jesse Krakow, Clifton Hyde, and Mike Pride.

A Very Long Engagement (2004)

The 2004 Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, The City of Lost Children, Delicatessen) film A Very Long Engagement (Un long dimanche de fiançailles) is one of those rare movies I’m urged to consume myself with annually. In fact it was my favorite film of that year and Jeunet, were it not for the terrible Alien Resurrection, has a nearly flawless list of films he has directed, at least in my opinion. Here, Jeunet once again gets to work with the quirky, lovable, and brilliant Audrey Tautou, who were it not for her humble choice of roles outside of The Da Vinci Code, would probably be a Hollywood icon. They clearly compliment each other, as in A Very Long Engagement Jeunet recaptures everything that makes Tautou so wonderful in Amélie. But that’s not all. Jeunet has an outstanding international ensemble in this movie. Jeunet regular Dominique Pinon is back once again. 2007 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard (La Môme a.k.a. La Vie en rose) is absolutely perfect as the tragic anti-hero and clever revenge connoisseur, Tina Lombardi. Gaspard Ulliel, who plays the infamous title character in 2007’s Hannibal Rising, co-stars opposite Tautou, and is as equally engaging for his pure boyish innocence in the role. Even Jodie Foster appears in a supporting role and is as compelling as ever. On the technical side Bruno Delbonnel (unquestionably among the best cinematographers in the world) collaborates again with Jeunet to make a great story also a visually dazzling film. Frequent David Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti scores the film effectively as well. But enough about who made the movie.

A Very Long Engagement follows Mathilde (Tautou), an orphan partially paralyzed from polio, as she undertakes a desperate journey to find her fiancé, a French soldier in World War I named Manech (Ulliel). Their love for one another is portrayed as remarkably profound and that really is what this movie is built on. Jeunet has a unique way of introducing characters to us. He makes it almost impossible to not relate in some way to them. The characters in his films are far more charming than most, especially here. Manech was one of five soldiers convicted of self-mutilation. He did this so he would no longer have to serve. All five soldiers faced a death sentence by being forced to enter No Man’s Land between the French and German trenches. All are assumed to have not survived but Mathilde’s faith in Manech’s survival cannot be shaken. A Very Long Engagement is seen through the perspective of both primary characters, but mostly focuses on Mathilde. I won’t give away the end but suffice to say it is among the most beautiful bittersweet movie moments in many years.

Although brief, Audrey Tautou's bum is in this movie, and that might earn 5 stars by itself.

In such a passionate story that never loses my attention I sometimes forget how amazing this film is visually. You can plainly see that Jeunet is delighted to tell his story with a big budget, and believe me he uses it wisely. The war scenes do not for one second turn away. Even with all I’ve heard, read about, or seen visual interpretations of; nothing could prepare me for Jeunet’s seemingly spot-on depiction of World War I trench warfare brutality. What’s amazing is he contrasts these fragmented horrific visuals with mostly gorgeous countryside shots of north western France and gazing shots of the beautiful and delicate Mathilde. Seems so appropriate, as the world I see today might need these contrasts as a reminder of how very beautiful life has the potential to be. A Very Long Engagement to me is the total package. It really is what movies should be about and I very highly recommend it to anyone.

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

This is fairly disturbing.  Coming in at #2 on the Mashed in Plastic playlist this little mash-up of Badalamenti’s The Pink Room and AC/DC’s The Jack.  Remember tittering at this as a young pubescent kid?  Well titter no more.  In the hands of these guys, and spliced with Twin Peaks footage, it becomes downright nasty.  Gets in your head and twists it some.  I was watching/listening on headphones, and swear I had to look over my shoulder a few times…who’s there?…did I lock the freaking door?!?…in other words, really really good.

WARNING: for all those out there who haven’t watched Twin Peaks or Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and still puzzle over “Who killed Laura Palmer?”, this reveals all.  Don’t watch it yet.  Get out there and buy/rent/steal the Definitive Gold Box Set and get busy you slackers!  TV was never the same after this.  Truly.

Angelo Badalamenti is undoubtly one of our favorite composers of all time, especially when he teams up with the extraordinary David Lynch. The soundtrack of Twin Peaks is, at least for us, one of the best musical pieces in history, sometimes creepy, often jazzy and always very emotional.

We are writing about Angelo now because the Belgian magazine Knack has a special offer this week, you can buy a double cd with angelo’s work called “For The Record: Angelo Badalamenti” for only a few euro’s more together with their magazine. The songs are performed by the Brussels Philharmonic orchestra and conducted by the famous Dirk Brossé. This cd is certainly worth buying, as it is a compilation of a lot of different soundtracks by Badalamenti, although we prefer the original versions by the man himself.

I guess it’s inevitable that at some point every Peaks-freak is gonna post something related to their love of the series, nay, whole mythology of Twin Peaks. 

Random surfing landed me in the lap (er…so to speak) of a number of mash-ups on Mashed in Plastic, featuring some stellar audio and video mixing.

This then the first one that popped up – of all people Kylie mashed with Angelo Badalamenti.  I have to say, I even tracked down the Kylie song afterwards.  And that’s saying something!  And it ain’t half bad.  What the hell is going on?!

While I worry and gibber about my impending onslaught of mid-pop senility, here’s Twin Hearts.  Enjoy…

Angelo Badalamenti. Angelo Badalamenti. Angelo Badalamenti. Wat ! Een ! Naam ! Spreek hem zelf eens uit en je merkt hoe prachtig die naam klinkt. Achter deze prachtige naam schuilt echter een uitzonderlijk componist. Hij moet naast Danny Elfman mijn favoriete filmmuziek-componist zijn. Nee, Badalamenti staat een trap hoger. Zeker weten. Hij is vooral gekend voor zijn samenwerking met David Lynch, net zoals Elfman met Tim Burton. In onder andere Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks (zowel de serie als de film), Lost Highway, The Straight Story, Wild At Heart en Mulholland Drive (stuk voor stuk pareltjes) zorgt hij voor de muziekscore. Deze films zouden een groot deel van hun effect missen zonder de ondersteuning van Badalamenti. Zonder Badalamenti, geen David Lynch. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk wel een David Lynch, maar niet zoals we die nu kennen. Naast huiscomponist van Lynch, schreef Badalamenti de soundtracks voor onder andere La Cité des Enfants Perdus en Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles, waarvoor hij in 2005 de World Soundtrack Award voor Composer of the Year kreeg. Ik kende de Twin Peaks Soundtrack, volledig van de hand van Badalamenti, al een tijdje. Voor de titelsong, de ‘Twin Peaks Theme’, kreeg hij een Grammy voor ‘beste instrumentale popnummer’. Een prachtige, variërende en enorm sfeervolle soundtrack die erg moeilijk te beschrijven is. Van erg donkere, mysterieuze songs tot dansbare, jazzy nummers. En toch voelt de soundtrack aan als een geheel, omdat het onbeschrijfbare ‘Twin Peaks gevoel’ (herkenbaar voor mensen die de serie hebben bekeken) als een rode draad heerst doorheen alle nummers. Deze soundtrack helpt voor een groot percentage mee aan dat ‘Twin Peaks gevoel’, omdat die zo perfect aansluit bij de serie. Je kan de twee niet van elkaar loskoppelen: zonder de serie geen muziek en zonder de muziek geen serie.

Si chiama Persécution, persecuzione, il film di Patrice Chéreau presentato in concorso a Venezia. Ma potrebbe chiamarsi benissimo Lasciami entrare. Sarebbe un titolo adatto. Perché la storia tra Daniel, giovane uomo che lavora come muratore, e Sonia, la sua fidanzata, con cui ha un rapporto tormentato, è fatta di continue, disperate, richieste di ingresso. Lasciami entrare nella tua vita, nel tuo mondo, nella tua anima, nel tuo corpo. È questo che si chiedono, si negano e si concedono i due amanti. È questo che chiede a Daniel un uomo misterioso, che appare all’improvviso e sembra perseguitarlo. E a livello visivo Persécution riesce a rappresentare bene questa necessità di entrare nella vita di chi ci è prossimo, di chi amiamo. È un film fatto di continui ingressi, nelle case, nelle stanze. Case in costruzione, come quelle in cui lavora Daniel. Come sono in costruzione i rapporti tra le persone, le personalità di ognuno. È un film fatto di porte lasciate aperte, oppure chiuse e poi forzate, come l’intimità di ciascuno, condivisa, o negata e poi violata.

È un film che gira volutamente a vuoto, quello di Chereau, fatto di personaggi che girano su se stessi, di parole che dicono tutto e niente, come spesso accade nella vita, e che non svelano mai completamente il senso di quello che accade. Perché è un film che non vuole raccontare una storia, ma trasmettere un disagio, uno stato d’animo. Per entrarci dentro si tratta di andare al di là delle parole, e cercare i movimenti, gli sguardi, le sensazioni. La fotografia sui toni del blu contribuisce a raffreddare tutto, imbrigliando e raggelando il film, che non sfocia mai nel mélo ma si mantiene sui binari del thriller dell’anima, che punta alla testa e mai al cuore. È un film inquietato e incompiuto, con un’inevitabile monotonia di fondo che non riesce a sollevarlo oltre la mediocrità dei titoli visti sin qui alla Mostra di Venezia.

È un film d’attori, e non poteva essere altrimenti. Nell’incontro/scontro tra Romain Duris e Jean-Hugues Anglade, rispettivamente Daniel e l’uomo misterioso, spicca l’affascinante Charlotte Gainsbourg, ancora una volta alle prese con una prova intensissima, opposta e complementare al ruolo estremo di Antichrist, ancora una volta completamente a nudo, nel corpo e nell’anima. È nudo anche l’uomo misterioso che affianca e perseguita Daniel. Se fossimo in un film americano ci sarebbe qualche twist ending a svelarci qualcosa che possiamo solo intuire. Ma niente risposte, siamo francesi. Così i rapporti tra i personaggi sono misteri, quei misteri dell’amore, come cantano Antony and the Johnsons in una struggente Mysteries of love, remake del pezzo scritto da David Lynch e Angelo Badalamenti per Velluto Blu, che da sola vale la visione del film. Chi è allora l’uomo misterioso? Non lo sappiamo. Provate solo a pensare che a volte la persecuzione peggiore è quella che infliggiamo a noi stessi.

Da vedere perché: è un raggelato e raggelante thriller dell’anima (con una canzone che vale da sé la visione) anche se è inevitabilmente monotono

Cred ca melodia asta a lui Angelo Badalamenti este preferata mea. E greu dintre atatea genuri, atatea melodii, sa-ti alegi o preferata. Mai ales daca vrei ca ea sa fie numita preferata in sens strict: pentru orchestratie, voce dupa caz, linie melodica si nu dupa perioada fericita a vietii pe care o reprezinta, ziua aparte sau persoana speciala de care-ti aduce aminte dandu-ti un artificial sentiment de bine… Foarte posibil sa-mi aduca vag aminte de o copilarie in care toti membrii familiei erau aproape, stateau si se uitau la Twin Peaks (eu fiind prea mica sa inteleg ceva dar uitandu-ma cu drag la agent Dale Cooper ) pana tarziu (pentru mine era tarziu, da? ), fericiti ca petreceau timp impreuna. E posibil sa-mi motiveze astfel alegerea. Insa eram atat de mica si totul e atat de vag incat prefer sa cred ca asta e melodia mea preferata pentru cum suna si nu pentru altceva.
A remarcat cineva ca imi plac mai mult melodiile instrumentale. Dat fiind ca incerc sa pun pe blog o (mica) parte din viata mea, (de-abia) asa am ajuns sa observ si eu ca in general imi plac melodiile cu o orchestratie aparte si eventual voce-lipsa :p . Mie nu mi se pare rau.

(Nu pot sa nu recunosc fata de mine ca fac orice sa nu trebuiasca sa scriu despre “Sexting” sau “Blessing turned to curse”. Din motive diverse si diferite. Ma iertati, mai asteptati!)

十五歲少男看此片，好難不說是朝聖味濃，但誤讀又好、拜讀又好，那震撼性的一幕又一幕，畫面殘影卻有力照足廿多年。今日重看，是20多年後的一個晚上，我發覺David Lynch 的怪雞風格魅力依然，一刀切入現代人的心靈空間，呈現的是人的虛空與落泊，沒有藉口社會時局，沒有那種濫情濫愛的人文關懷。

當今天人人說電視劇《Lost》看得人迷迷惘，我還迷戀當年《Twin Peaks》劇集中的濃霧潮濕，似畫又似詩。迷惘中是否醉人，只在乎觀眾是否有閒情去想深一層、沉醉一陣，正如面對一位抱住一塊木頭的來訪仕女，還急甚麼為電影、劇集作出評分、寫篇網誌呢。

我沒看齊David Lynch的所有出品，但看過的都有一種難以忘懷的震撼，可能是某個畫面，可能是某個片段，視覺震撼維持十年、廿年，無法釋放，正如《Blue Velvet》的衣櫃少年，一幕又一幕偷窺所見的，都成為這個未來中產城市人的成長烙印了。David Lynch的怪雞，是對人的心靈透視，似X光照片，看出了藍色絲絨下的另一身體，有暴力、有性慾、有好奇、有恐慌，甚至有被虐與虐待，你有我有，毫不稀奇。

在美學上，David Lynch的作品技高何止一籌，不妥協的色調突如奇來，怪誕的跳接令人無所適從，配樂旋律更是無出其右，充滿語言，可以說，讀甚麼電影編劇、故事結構都無法完滿，因為大師散出來的煙霧就是如此隱隱悔悔，在傳統故事叙述中顛覆翻滾，作浪輕波，透過色彩、構圖、造型、聲效、鏡頭、語言上的微絲配合，來與朝聖人士逐一過招，誰管你是坐立不安還是心有所繫。

還想說的，是戲院的角色，當年銅鑼灣碧麗宮所帶來的一切特殊觀影感受，到今日，卻無法在商場頂樓、橫街後巷的戲院中尋回絲毫，甚為可惜。

ภาพยนตร์ของผู้กำกับ Danny Boyle และนักแสดงหนุ่ม Leonardo DiCaprio เล่าถึงเรื่องราวของ Richard เด็กหนุ่มนักท่องเที่ยวชาวอเมริกันผู้เดินทางมาแสวงหาความแปลกใหม่เร้าใจในประเทศไทย เขาได้รู้จักชายประหลาดชื่อ Daffy ที่เล่าเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับเกาะสวรรค์ วันหนึ่งชายคนนั้นหายไปและ Richard ก็ได้เจอแผนที่ไปยังเกาะแห่งนั้น เขาและเพื่อนใหม่ซึ่งเป็นคู่รักหนุ่มสาวชาวฝรั่งเศสจึงตัดสินใจไปยังเกาะแห่งนั้น
ในส่วนของดนตรีประกอบได้คอมโพเซอร์ Angelo Badalamenti มารับหน้าที่นี้ ซึ่งยังคงโชว์ฝีไม้ลายมืออันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ คือ การใช้เครื่องดนตรีออเคสตร้าน้อยชิ้นแต่ได้ผลลัพธ์ดีเหลือหลาย
แต่ที่มาแปลกในครั้งนี้ คือ Badalamenti ได้เลือกใช้ซินธิไซเซอร์มาสร้างเสียงสังเคราะห์พิลึกๆให้ได้ฟังกันในแต่ละเพลง
Bizarre City เพลงเปิดในจังหวะเทคโนที่ใส่มาแบบเต็มเหนี่ยว สื่อถึงกรุงเทพที่พลุกพล่านไปด้วยผู้คนมากมาย ทั้งนี้ยังเสียงเครื่องตีคล้ายๆฉิ่งมาช่วยเสริมบรรยากาศแบบไทยๆให้อีกเล็กน้อย
เพลงธีมอันโดดเด่นที่สุดในอัลบั้ม ได้แก่ The Beach Theme (Swim to Island) และ Beach Theme (Mythical Waters) เป็นเพลงที่ใช้เครื่องสายบรรเลงได้ท่วงทำนองสวยงามชวนเพ้อฝันที่สุด โดยเฉพาะในส่วนของเสียงร้องที่เมื่อได้ฟังแล้วรับรองว่าคุณจะนึกถึงทะเลและชายหาดอันสวยงามแน่นอน

แม้ฟังดูแปลกไปสำหรับงานดนตรีของ Angelo Badalamenti แต่ก็ยังคงมาตรฐานที่ดีไว้ได้เช่นเคย ซึ่งผมเชื่อว่าแค่เพลง The Beach Theme ทั้งสองตัวก็ได้ใจคนฟังไปกว่าครึ่งแล้ว

ทางด้านเพลงร้องยุค’ 40 ได้ขับร้องโดยศิลปินหลากท่าน และแน่นอนว่า Badalamenti ยังคงเกี่ยวข้องในส่วนของการแต่งดนตรีประกอบให้เพลงร้องแต่ละเพลง ในอัลบั้มนี้ Keira Knightley ก็ได้ฝากงานเพลงที่น่าพอใจไว้ 4 เพลง โดยที่เด่นที่สุดในส่วนนี้คือเพลง Maybe It’s Because I Love You Too Much ส่วนเพลง Careless Talk และ Careless Love ก็เป็นตัวอย่างของเพลงยุค’ 40 ที่คุณน่าจะลองฟังดู ซึ่งมีให้ฟังกันอย่างละ 2 เวอร์ชั่น
Badalamenti สอบผ่านในการทำดนตรียุค’ 40 ทั้ง Score และเพลงร้อง ซึ่งไม่น่าแปลกใจถ้าใครได้คุ้นเคยกับงานดนตรีประกอบที่เขาแต่งให้แก่ซีรี่ย์ส Twin Peaks และหนังเพี้ยนๆของ David Lynch อีกหลายเรื่อง
ส่วนตัวผมคิดว่าเพลงในอัลบั้มนี้ให้บรรยากาศที่เหมาะจะเอาไปเปิดในร้านอาหารอย่างยิ่ง หากใครติดตามผลงานของคอมโพเซอร์ท่านนี้มาตลอดหรือถวิลหาบรรยากาศยุค’ 40 นี่คืออัลบั้มที่ผมขอแนะนำครับ

ขณะออกลาดตระ​เวนบนทางหลวง เจ้าหน้าที่ตำ​รวจ​ Edward Malus (Nicolas Cage) ​หยุดรถแวนคันหนึ่งเพื่อ​จะ​คืนตุ๊กตาที่​เด็ก​ผู้​หญิงคนหนึ่งทำ​หล่น​ไว้​ ​ต่อมารถบรรทุกลึกลับพุ่งชนรถแวนคัน​นั้นจนยับเยิน​และ​ไฟลุกท่วม​โดย​มี​แม่​และ​เด็กน้อยติด​อยู่​ใน​รถ​ซึ่งเขาไม่สามารถช่วยชีวิตทั้งคู่ได้ทันก่อนรถระเบิด
ณ ห้วงเวลาแห่งความหดหู่ วันหนึ่งจดหมายของ Willow อดีตคู่หมั้นของ​เขา​ถูกส่งมา​ถึง​บ้านให้เขาช่วยตามหาลูกสาวของเธอที่หายไป ณ เกาะ Summer’s Isle ที่เธออาศัยอยู่ Edward มองว่านี่อาจเป็นโอกาสแก้ตัวที่จะได้ช่วยชีวิตใครสักคน แต่ทันทีที่เขาไปถึงเกาะและเริ่มสืบเรื่องกลับพบว่าหลายสิ่งหลายอย่างไม่ชอบมาพากลบนเกาะที่ดูสงบสุขและเรียบง่ายแห่งนี้
งานเพลงในอัลบั้มของ The Wicker Man เวอร์ชั่นปี 2006 นี้แต่งโดยคอมโพเซอร์อาวุโส Angelo Badalamenti ผู้เป็นคอมโพเซอร์คู่บุญของ David Lynch ที่แม้ครั้งนี้จะทำงานให้ผู้กำกับ Neil LaBute แต่ Badalamenti ยังคงแสดงเอกลักษณ์ให้เราได้ฟังกัน คือ การทำ Score จังหวะช้าๆโดยใช้เครื่องดนตรีน้อยชิ้นแต่ให้อารมณ์หลอนได้ใจ ภาพรวมของอัลบั้มจึงเป็นเพลงบรรเลงโดยใช้เครื่องสายเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ได้แก่ ไวโอลิน เชลโล รวมถึงไวโอล่าอีกหลายตัว แต่ไม่มากเท่าวงออเคสตร้า แล้วยังมีการใช้กีตาร์เพื่อให้ได้บรรยากาศแบบชนบทยิ่งขึ้น ทั้งนี้ก็ยังมีเสียงผู้หญิงร้องโหยหวนที่เพิ่มความขลังได้ดีไม่ใช่น้อย (สิ่งที่คอมโพเซอร์ตัดออกไปคือเครื่องดนตรีจำพวกคีย์บอร์ดซึ่งเขามักใช้ในงานดนตรีก่อนหน้านี้ แต่ในอัลบั้มนี้เราจะไม่ได้ยินกันเพราะไม่เช่นนั้นดนตรีคงหลุดคอนเซ็ปต์ไปเยอะ)
เพลงโหมโรงอันโดดเด่น Overture for the Wicker Man ซึ่งคุณจะได้ฟังธีมหลักแบบคร่าวๆทั้งหมดของอัลบั้มในแทร็คนี้
คิวที่สองกับเพลงที่มีท่อนบูมชวนสะดุ้งพองามในช่วงแรกๆ Cycling into a Nightmare ซึ่งเพลงนี้ Badalamenti ได้ใช้เสียงสังเคราะห์มาช่วยสร้างดนตรีที่มีท่วงทำนองสวยงามและน่ากลัวในขณะเดียวกัน
เดินทางสู่เกาะ Summer’s Isle กันในเพลง Flight to Summer’s Isle กับการบรรเลงเครื่องสายสุดอลังการแฝงบรรยากาศที่ไม่น่าไว้วางใจ
The Barn และ Trapped in Water เป็นเพลงที่มีทำนองชวนอึดอัดไม่ใช่น้อย ก่อนที่จะท่อนเครื่องสายโหมกระหน่ำให้เราสะดุ้งกันในช่วงท้ายๆ
เพลงฟังสบายๆกับดนตรีที่ฟังรื่นหูแต่ยังคงความหลอนไม่ใช่เล่น ได้แก่ Secret Meeting Note, Image of Rowan, และ Sister Summer’s Isle ธีมตัวละครที่เล่นโดย Ellen Burstyn ที่มีทำนองสวยงามที่สุด
ธีมหลักสุดเจ๋งอันหนึ่งของเรื่องนี้ที่ไม่อยู่ใน Overture for the Wicker Man เป็นดนตรีระทึกชวนลุ้นแบบหลอนๆ ซึ่งหาฟังได้ในเพลง The Rose and the Daydream, Kiss of Bees, และ The Confrontation
ปิดอัลบั้มด้วย The Burning ที่ท่อนเสียงโหยหวนและเสียงขลุ่ยของเพลงนี้เรียกได้ว่ามีดีกรีความหลอนที่สุดในอัลบั้มแล้ว
เอาเป็นว่าถ้าใครไม่อยากดูหนัง(ซึ่งโดนวิจารณ์เละพอสมควร) ผมก็ขอแนะนำอัลบั้มนี้เลยเพราะแค่ฟังแต่ละเพลงคุณก็สามารถเข้าถึงโลกที่ลึกลับและน่าสะพรึงกลัวของ The Wicker Man ได้แล้วล่ะครับ

Als filmliefhebber ben ik uiteraard geïnteresseerd in bepaalde filmmuziek. Dikwijls tilt het films die sowieso al goed zijn naar een nóg hoger niveau. En er bestaan ook films die gewoon slecht zijn, maar waarvan de filmmuziek gelukkig nog wél deugde. Vandaag maken we een combinatie van beide ingrediënten, i.e. een degelijke film met een even degelijke soundtrack.

Fans van filmmuziek kunnen onmogelijk voorbij aan de prachtige soundtrack die Nino Rota maakte voor The Godfathertrilogie. De trilogie wordt algemeen beschouwd als zijnde één van de betere films aller tijden. Naast een topcast én topregisseur, Francis Ford Coppola, was de muziek van wezenlijk belang.

Ander mooi voorbeeld van fantastische filmmuziek is die uit Cape Fear. Elmer Bernstein en Bernard Herrmann waren zowel voor de originele film uit 1962 als voor de remake uit 1991 verantwoordelijk voor de muziek. Bombastisch muziek die de spanning opwekt en ervoor zorgt dat iedereen op het puntje van zijn stoel blijft zitten.

De bekendste en ook anno 2009 nog steeds het meest tot de verbeelding sprekende filmmuziekcomponist is John Williams, die voor gigantisch veel filmscores verantwoordelijk is. O.a. ook voor Angela’s ashes, het verfilmde boek van Frank McCourt. Je kan hier een uitgebreid overzicht vinden van films waaraan hij meewerkte.

Iemand die ik ken van vóór zijn filmmuziektijdperk is Clint Mansell. In een vorig leven nog zanger én gitarist van Pop Will Eat Itself, ondertussen in zijn volgend leven actief in filmmuziekmiddens. O.a. de vaste componist voor de soundtracks bij films van Darren Aronofsky. Pi is een uitstekend voorbeeld.

En we gaan eruit door een klein beetje vals te spelen, omdat het fragment wat ik eruit pik uit een tv-serie komt en niet uit een film. Maar niet getreurd, Angelo Badalamenti is gewoon de huiscomponist voor de projecten van David Lynch. En die maakt naast tv-series ook gewoon films!
