So the photos from The  Vans Warped Tour 2007 are on my Facebook Fan Page. The bands that I photographed for the day are Bad Religion, Chiodos, Paramore, Meg & Dia, and Cute Is What We Aim For. The photos from The Vans Warped Tour 2008 will be uploaded on tomorrow at 8:30pm. I am currently working on the photos I took of the band The Material in early September 2009. yeah it is late, but better late then never. I will be finished editing them by next friday but who know. School is very busy and I have to work on that first.

Hello,

Welcome to Logan Westom Photography.  A place that you can look to for interesting pictures and comments. Right now I am working on building up my portfolio. Some day I hope to travel the country photographing bands on tour and photograph concerts. My first goal is to hopefully get a press pass for the Vans Warped Tour 2010 and hopefully start photographing local bands in Portland and Vancouver for a Portland Mercury. From there I don’t know where I will end up but that is a start.

As I said earlier I am currently working on building up a  portfolio. I am working on pictures that I have taken from previous Warped Tours. I will post a few here but all of them will be conveniently located on my Facebook Fan Page soon. Don’t worry if you don’t have an account, all can be viewed without one. In the next week I will be posting pictures from 2006-2009 of the Vans Warped Tours.

I took these videos at a Guitar Wars event that happened this past Saturday.  It is pretty much a ‘battle of the bands‘ type deal and my friends made it to the finals, which took place this day!  Whoohoo!  Though the outcome wasn’t what any of us expected I am still so sooo proud of these guys, and know that if they keep working hard and practicing, their time will come!  These are the only two videos I took that night.  The first is titled My Baby Taught Me which is one of their newer songs, and the second is Melancholy Holly which is pretty much their first!

According to the lyrics to ‘Secret Crowds’, if Tom Delonge had his own world, he’d build you an empire. If I had my own world, you’d probably be building me something. Everybody knows that slavery works, just look at the pyramids. Now imagine that with cocaine and hookers. With the release of Angels and Airwaves’ second album I-Empire, it seems that the former Blink 182 guitarist and I still have our differences. Possibly because at heart I am a tyrant, but possibly because despite the hubris involved in this band’s conception, they still have not spoken with their potential voice. It seems that we both have two very different definitions of an I-Empire.

After Blink 182, Tom wanted full creative control and a fresh start from the toilet humour. I don’t care what you think because they are still one of my favourite bands, but I will admit that after fully breaking through into the mainstream Blink 182 could not help but sound contrived. They could no longer relive their highschool experience with any authenticity because there is something moderately disturbing about family men singing pop songs about sex at the prom. The album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket was the pop punk equivalent of saying ‘get in my van and I’ll show you puppies.’ After listening we all felt a little molested, but being young we weren’t sure how to talk about it. Our displeasure is all coming out now.

Tom’s less than musically credible past was the biggest obstacle for his new band to overcome, hence why he decided on a completely antithetic approach with AVA. The new season beckoned songs about the infinite potential of the human being, not about bodily fluid and his band mates’ mothers. Depending on their own twisted perspectives, most fans probably noticed quite a stark difference in tone when the album was released. Unfortunately, Tom expressed his grand sentiments through the diverse vocabulary of your average myspace user, and made up for this less than erudite approach by using metaphors of war and love relentlessly. Tom also gave the impression of having a reasonably well developed god complex when he described his master plan, but at least the message was quite strong even if he could not articulate it very well. This is pretty much the gist of it:

Yes, contrary to popular belief, the world is actually in a bit of a state right now, and we need an optimistic message to rescue us from the usual array of war mongering politicians, media fear tactics and all of the other monsters of mass culture. High five for stating the bleeding obvious, but nil points for the solution: 1) Act like Bono 2) Spread the gospel of living in the moment.

I’m the first person to cry for madder music and stronger wine, which is why I find Angels and Airwaves so frustrating. I do believe very strongly in what they are selling, but this doctrine just doesn’t work if it’s too explicit. An example of my belief is perhaps best expressed through something a friend of mine said. She was describing a guy she knew and a tattoo he had that she found both profound and inspiring as a philosophy.

On his arm in large letters he had: ‘LIVE LIFE’.

So… was he liable to forget?

That’s not a philosophy, that’s a biproduct of having a functioning human body. He probably would have found it difficult to act to the contrary. On the adjacent limb did he have ‘breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out…’? Hopefully it was followed by ‘stop’.

The only thing more irritating than people who wish to maintain their ineffectual existence at the expense of new experiences are people who tell you they live on the edge, because the rest of us are taking up too much space.

Most adults probably have a grasp of life beyond what AVA are preaching, and those who don’t, never will. Therefore once again, Tom’s message can only find a truly sympathetic audience in the naive adolescent looking for direction. It’s certainly a positive message to spread to the impressionable (at least it’s better than suggesting trying to poison your neighbours’ drinking water) but it will only hinder the band if they want to take over the world. They need eloquence as well as sentiment to be more than small fish in a very big pond.

In this respect it’s almost quite appropriate that the I-Empire album artwork was designed by the same guy who did the Star Wars movie posters. I am a huge fan of the original films because Star Wars managed to tell a universal human story on both a personal and a fantasy level. The only thing holding back the prequels was George Lucas’ cringe worthy dialogue. Sound familiar? AVA are probably the music industry’s contemporary alternative to The Phantom Menace; you know it has the components of something epic, but you can’t help but cringe when you witness it. I also feel compelled to ponder how far superior the band would be if they replaced new bassist Matt Wachter with notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Anyway, the only time that they come close to what I believe is at the core of their manifesto is ironically in the most Blink-esque song on their new album. Call me immature, but when combined with the melody, there is some simple beauty in the chorus to ‘Rite of Spring’:

If I had a chance for another try,
I wouldn’t change a thing,
This made me all who I am inside,
And if I could thank god
That I am here, and that I am alive,
And every day I wake
I tell myself a little harmless lie,
The whole wide world is mine

There is no laboured metaphor, only something genuine presented here: ‘do what you like, and do it honestly.’ Although the full lyrics are an arrogant account of Tom’s rise to fame, this is the only way for the message to actually appear sincere, because let’s face it, he is more successful than you ever will be. He’s not telling you how to feel, he’s trying to explain how he feels in a situation we ultimately can’t comprehend. It’s a classic ‘show, don’t tell’ manoeuvre, and it’s about sodding time. The rest of the album moves in the right direction, but it still falls short of the objective.

And that’s exactly why Blink will remain more successful than AVA ever will be. Instead of telling people how your doctrine will improve their lives, just show them. (Although not by getting ‘tool’ tattooed on your body) Blink played the music they liked; even if it was immature they were being true to themselves. Their attitude was ‘fuck you, this is fun’ which is how it should be, and also what AVA are trying to say somewhere under the weight of the pretension they’ve put upon themselves. Blink 182 were idiots, but they lived their goal rather than lectured us about it. Angels and Airwaves fail because the most important messages should never be too explicit. There’s actually more wisdom in ‘What’s My Age Again’ than anything AVA will ever write. The Blink album Enema of the State was just a bit of fun, but sometimes even a puerile title can hide some rather astute content.

I thought it might be interesting to document my music taste at the start of 2010 and see how different it is by the end. (I did say might be interesting… it might not)

Haas is MIA for a couple days so let me go ahead and throw this up… new Angels & Airwaves single “Hallucinations” comes out, aka half of Blink-182. This is a jam, very relaxed and awesome instrumental intro breaks into a song kind of reminiscent of Blink’s last studio album’s singles like “Down” and “Always”. Very solid effort. I thought there were rumors Blink was reuniting, but either way this is close enough.

Angels & Airwaves have announced a special present for their fans – just in time for the holidays!

The band, fronted by Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge, will be releasing their third studio album Love as a free download on Valentine’s Day!

“It’s like blending Radiohead and U2 together with these kind of Pink Floyd moments,” DeLonge said, of the album.

Love will also be accompanied by a free film of the same name, which is “a story of human life and destiny but at the same time really makes usual moments of life extraordinary,” DeLonge said.

Thanks Rasta for the Tickets! – 2 nights at The Palms. Most amazing show I have seen in a long time. From the Intro to the last minutes of her 2 hour set she owned the crowd. What a powerful performer! The production was over the top along with her signature off the wall costumes. The Pearl at The Palms was jam packed and full of energy. You can say what you will about her, but there is no denying she one of the most talented artists of our time. She has changed Pop Music and there are no signs of her slowing down. 25 – Coheed and Cambria – Year of the Black Rainbow (April, 2010)

This was posted on the news page of the prog- and metal-inspired rock band’s Web site on December 7: “Our new album will be titled, Year of the Black Rainbow, and is set for release in April 2010.” The post also indicated that the release will be followed by a headline tour of the US, the UK and Europe which will include festival stops. The album will serve as a prequel for the band’s previous albums which all fit into a concept known as “The Amory Wars.”

24 – Angels and Airwaves – Love (Feb. 14, 2010)

Easily the most ambitious release yet from Tom DeLonge and Angels and Airwaves is scheduled for a Valentine’s Day, 2010 release. Love will include a CD of all original songs and a film of the same name – not a documentary about the band, like their previous film Start The Machine, but an actual feature film about an astronaut stranded alone in space. DeLonge told Billboard that Love is the ‘pinnacle of his creativity’ and likened it to Pink Floyd’s The Wall. He also said it would be released for free.

23 – Plants and Animals – TBA (2010 release speculated)

Back in April, the Juno-nominated Montreal band let fans know, via their Web site, that they had been recording at The Treatment Room in Montreal, where they’d laid down Parc Avenue. In September, on MySpace, they revealed that they had also apparently been recording at La Frette studios near Paris. Later that month they said they would be mixing the album in Paris, and joked on their Web site (plantsandanimals.ca) that they had chosen the cover for their next album:

22 – Born Ruffians – Say It (Early 2010)

Having recorded and mixed the album in the fall and late summer, the Toronto trio just revealed, on December 14, that their second full length would be called Say It. Singer and guitarist Luke Lalonde told Stereogum.com that they worked with Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear producer Rusty Santos on the album. “We just want it to sound like us live … but better,” he said.

21 – Spoon – Transference (January 19, 2010)

Austin rock immortals Spoon will be putting out a new album in January called Transference, their fifth album released on N.C. indie label Merge Records. You can preview “Got Nuffin,” the lead single from Transference (first featured on an EP of the same name released back in June) on Pitchfork.com.

20 – The National – TBA (Spring 2010)

In mid-July, guitarist Bryce Dessner told Pitchfork that he, his twin brother Aaron, and the rest of the Brooklyn-based group were already pretty far along with a new record. The group built their own recording studio in Brooklyn following the release of their highly praised 2007 album Boxer, he said. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had our own space, so we’re just working our asses off trying to get that done. And we’re kind of pinching ourselves because it seems like it’s actually coming together,” Dessner said.

19 – Caribou – TBA (2010 release speculated)

After winning the 2008 Polaris Prize for his 2007 album Andora, Daniel Snaith, brainchild of the Canadian electronic act Caribou, wrote on his Website that part of the prize money would be going towards the creation of a new album. This past May, he posted an update saying “I’ve been busy making music for a new Caribou album which I’m really excited about.”

18 – Owen Pallett – Heartland (January 12, 2010)

Another Canadian artist working on the follow up to a Polaris Prize-winning album is Owen Pallett, who formerly worked under the title Final Fantasy. Pallett won the prize in 2007 for his album He Poos Clouds. Pallett told Pitchfork that the album is a concept about a farmer named Lewis, whose name pops up in some of the song titles. Featured on the album, apparently, are Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara, and the Czech Symphony.

17 – The Hold Steady – TBA (2010 release expected)

The Brooklyn-based band debuted a number new songs, five in total, during live shows on their recent American and Canadian tour. Guitarist Tad Kubler told obviatemedia.net at the end of September that they’ll be making their new record at their own pace. “I’d like to have a record out early [2010], but there’s a lot of other variables that are involved in putting out records… We’ve always sort of put a deadline of when we’d want to have a record out or a record finished. This one I’d like to be at a little more relaxed pace,” Kubler said, “We just kind of want to go in and record without a real deliberate date in mind for when things need to be wrapped up.”

16 – OK Go – Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (January 12, 2010)

Due out at the start of 2010 on Capitol Records, Of The Blue Colour of the Sky will be the third major release from Chicago’s OK Go. If the first single “WTF?”, which comes with a suitably psychedelic music video, is any indication, the band have taken a less straight forward approach on this album, veering away from their edgey pop-friendly rock towards the funky and the weird.

15 – Drake – Thank Me Later (March, 2010)

2009 was a big year for Degrassi: The Next Generation actor turned international rap star Drake – and he only released an EP. Scheduled to be released in March of 2010, Drake has said that one song on Thank Me Later will feature Jay Z, but that R&B, rather than hip hop, could make up the majority of the songs.

14 – Hot Chip – One Life Stand (February 8, 2010)

One Life Stand will be the fourth album from the Grammy-nominated British electropop group. So far two singles have been released, the title track, and “Take It In” which can be previewed on Pitchfork. Frontman Alexis Taylor told NME that the songs on One Life Stand are “more mid-tempo and disco influenced at the moment,” compared to their last album Made in the Dark. “Things are a bit calmer this time,” Taylor said.

13 – Fleet Foxes – TBA (Late 2010 release expected)

“We’re working on stuff every day,” Robin Flecknold, singer and guitarist for Seattle’s Fleet Foxes, told Pitchfork in an interview in early December. “Now is when we’re writing and starting to record the new album.” He also elaborated on the sonic direction they’re headed in. “There are definitely super-upbeat songs that are being worked on for the new record. But as a whole, it’s probably a little bit less upbeat [than their self-titled debut]. Not darker – some of it has a more exuberant feeling to it. But some of it is just more realistic,” said Flecknold.

12 – Circa Survive – TBA (early 2010 release expected)

Studio recording in Toronto has finished for Circa Survive’s third full length album. The Philadelphia group teased fans with a number of studio videos posted on their site documenting recording and featuring snippets of songs, but they have still yet to come out with the name of the album. This will be the band’s first record released on Atlantic Records, having completed their contract with Equal Vision.

11 – Vampire Weekend – Contra (January 12, 2010)

Expect the sophomore release from New York’s Vampire Weekend in the middle of January. The band’s multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij produced this effort, as he did on their debut. Dude has ‘Batman’ right in his name. So you know it’ll be good.

10 – Sigur Ros – TBA (2010 release expected)

At the end of May the Icelandic musicians posted on their Website that they had almost completed recording a new album at Sundlaugin studio in Álafoss. The post indicated that the record will be “slower and more ambient” than their previous two albums. No release date is set; however, March 22 is when lead singer Jónsi Birgisson’s solo album Go is scheduled to drop.

09 – My Chemical Romance – TBA (2010 release expected)

My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way recently said the fourth album from his group has been heavily ‘80’s-influenced, name-dropping metal god-fathers Judas Priest and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. The band has been in the studio since August; no release date has been set.

08 – Stone Temple Pilots – TBA (2010 release expected)

Scott Weiland and the reunited Stone Temple Pilots are reportedly nearly finished their first album since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da. The band postponed some scheduled shows in December and January to finish the long-awaited album that will be produced by Don Was (The Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop).

07 – No Doubt – TBA (2010 release speculated)

Back in 2008, almost as soon as they’d announced a reunion tour would take place in 2009, the Anaheim group also said, yes, they’d be working on a new album. Delays arose, not the least of which was singer Gwen Stefani’s pregnancy with her second child, but drummer Adrian Young said the band would be touring with a mobile studio on their bus, and would eventually get around to recording some new No Doubt material. Rock Steady, released in 2001, was the last full length put out by the group.

06 – Arcade Fire – TBA (2010 release expected)

Montreal’s Arcade Fire will reportedly have their third album out by the second half of 2010, NME.com reported early in December. The band convened to work on the follow up to 2007’s Neon Bible in the summer, and will likely spend next summer headlining summer festivals.

05 – Yeasayer – Odd Blood (February 9, 2010)

A deliciously bizarre video already exists on the interwebs for the lead single off Odd Blood, “Ambling Alp.” The fusion of psychedelic and world music seems to have paid off for the group, who played on the same stage as Radiohead at Lollapalooza in 2008, and rocked Bonnaroo in 2009, all off the power of just their debut, All Hour Cymbals. Expect a February release for their follow up.

04 – Wolf Parade – TBA (2010 release speculated)

Spencer Krug, one half of the two-headed songwriting team behind Montreal’s Wolf Parade (the other half being Dan Boeckner, also of The Handsome Furs), told an Irish interviewer in September that the band was getting back together in November to start working on their third album, a follow up to 2008’s think piece At Mount Zoomer. 

03 – MGMT – Congratulations (Spring 2010)

The Brooklyn band finished recording their follow up to the much, much lauded Oracular Spectacular during the summer in Malibu. The new album is reportedly influenced by the band’s incredible boost in popularity since their debut. Beyond their own projects the duo of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden have recently collaborated with The Flaming Lips on Embryonic and with Kid Cudi on Man on the Moon: The End of Day.

2 Blink 182 – TBA (2010 release speculated)

Following their 2009 reunion, Blink 182 has already recorded a couple new songs, with one being featured on Travis Barker’s upcoming solo album. Bassist Mark Hoppus said they’ll be in the studio in January. Will that mean an album before 2010 is out? It’s entirely possible.

01 – Dr Dre – Detox (2010 release expected)

Repeatedly pushed back from its originally scheduled 2004 release, 2010 is supposedly going to be the year when fans will finally get to hear Detox, the third album from Dr. Dre – the one that he’s been talking about since 2002. Dre seems to have been more concerned with producing other artists and selling Dr. Pepper than putting out his own album in recent months, but when this does drop, expect big things as Dre has told MTV the album will basically be a ‘Hip Hop musical’ where collaborators will appear as characters in an overarching story. Think “Guilty Conscience,” but for an entire album. The Rock world got its Chinese Democracy in 2008, and it looks as though the Hip Hop world will finally get Detox in 2010.

As the winter blues begin to set in and the memories of summer seem like they were decades away, it’s nice to wrap up in front of the fire and listen to a bit of New Found Glory or Blink-182. 1. Blink-182 – ‘First Date’

Went to See Carrot Top last night and it was absolutely amazing. I wasn’t sure what to expect but when I left there my jaw hurt from laughing the entire show. Yeah he might be funny looking and look like he is on steroids, but he is a brilliant comic. His timing and delivery was on point. His use of of props and gags is out of this world. No one was safe when it came to cracking jokes and using props – Criss Angel, Tiger Woods, Terrel Owens and even the Luxor Hotel were the brunt of some of his funnier jokes. I was even more impressed with how much he made fun of himself. GREAT SHOW and I highly recommend going to see it if you get the chance.
